Films from South India rule international market in 2017, Mersal continues dream run

Indian films have a huge market abroad and in recent times movies from the southern region of the country have gained more prominence. This year’s release Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Vivegam, Spyder, Mersal have all grossed good collections in foreign markets giving a tough competition to Hindi films that had ruled this space for a long time.

Vijay-starrer Mersal, which faced a lot of controversy back home, had a phenomenal run overseas. The film chased a massive total despite the release of two Hindi movies Golmaal Again and Secret Superstar.

Mersal started on a strong note in US with collections going up to Rs 2.25 crore from 129 locations. Malaysia witnessed Mersal mania and added Rs 90.31 lakhs on first day of its release and went on to gross Rs 3.57 crore till Sunday. Mersal gathered steam even in Australia with collections worth Rs 2.07 crore. In North America, the film earned Rs 7.61 crore in four days of its release.

In April this year, films from the tamil movies a turning point in the overseas market post the release of Baahubali sequel that set a benchmark even for Hindi films. Directed by Rajamouli, the magnum opus earned Rs 801 crore worldwide out of which overseas collections were around Rs 93 crore, according to Box Office India.

The share of overseas market grew 14 percent to Rs 1,090 crore from Rs 950 crore in 2015. This growth can be attributed to the strong performance of South Indian films which has increased by around 10 percent over the previous year to reach 62 percent of the overseas theatricals in 2016, according to a FICCI-KPMG report

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is unstoppable at the global box-office. After we reported Dangal stands somewhere near Rs.1500cr at the worldwide box-office, it is now being reported that the Hindi film has achieved another milestone by becoming the first Indian film to rake in Rs. 1700 crore at the worldwide box-office.

After Aamir Khan‘s Dangal pinned down Baahubali 2 to become the highest grossing Indian film ever, it has now also become the first Indian film to rake in Rs 1700 crore at the worldwide market.

The movie is currently on a magical run at the Chinese box office as it scooped another Rs 52.05 crore on day 25, taking it overall tally to Rs 941.51 crore. Apart from that, at the Taiwan market, Dangal has earned Rs 32 crore, while it has collected Rs 745 crore from the rest of the world.

Trade analyst and industry tracker, Ramesh Bala took to his Twitter account and said, “#Dangal is the first Indian Movie to enter Rs 1700 crore Worldwide Gross Box Office Collection Club! #China – Rs 942 crore. #Taiwan – Rs 32 crore. Rest of world – Rs 745 crore. Total – Rs 1719 crore.”

The movie released in China on May 5 across 7000 screens. With a good fan following and a decent word-of-mouth publicity, everyone knew Dangal would earn well.

There could have been a big change in the numbers game after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth movie from the popular franchise, got released on Friday, however nothing could stop the madness of Dangal.

And also, let’s not forget that SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion, which was earlier the highest Indian movie grosser, is yet to release in China.

With the 250 crore milestone in sight, the period drama looks adamant to dominate the box office in the coming days as well. The report further suggested that ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ has done a better business than Aamir Khan‘s ‘3 Idiots’ and Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai��� in Maharashtra. With Rs 115.28 crore (first week), Rs 77.87 crore (second week) and now Rs 38.50 crore from the third, Ajay’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ is further stated to end around Rs 260-270 crore approximately. But what’s will the film surpass the collections of Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani‘s ‘Kabir Singh’ is to be seen.

Meanwhile, the film which is based on the life of the Maratha Empire’s military leader Tanaji Malusare also stars Kajol in an integral role. Here they come, blowing up your phone, getting funniest looks from, everyone who hears;, hey hey it’s the Nerds. That’s right folks, look out, strap in and enjoy the ride of yet another fantastic fun filled episode of chaos and laughter. Also I know you started to sing along with us in that opening sentence, just go with it and enjoy. First up we look at a robot using origami to pick things up. It is truly spectacular! The boys get Nerdy and geek out over this and the applications it could be used for. When you look at what it can do you will understand.

            Then as we wander through the show the DJ giggles constantly like he fit to burst, we aren’t sure what was in his milk that morning but hey, it worked. The next stop on our magical mystery tour is Pokemon and the Brain, that’s right folks Pokemon and the Brain, not Pinky. Although this has been more successful in taking over the world then Pinky; note, we need to copyright that idea before….too late. Anyway, we take a look at how watching pokemon is affecting people’s brains, and we don’t mean the crazy people running out in traffic to catch Jigglypuff.

            The DJ continues to giggle as he tells us about Sonic the Hedgehog and the change that is happening to rectify the massive failure that was released to so much anger. This is serious folks, some idiot somewhere is trying to make something look even more ridiculous then Will Smith in body paint…and that is a really hard thing to do. Then as normal we have the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and events of the week, which has some pretty funny moments for your enjoyment. Bollywood brings the curtain down on 2017 with lower earnings despite power from Baahubali 2

It hasn’t quite been a great year for Bollywood with over a dozen films bringing lull to the box office. According to trade analysts, the total box office collections in the year were about 10 percent less than that in 2016.

“2017 was a mixed bag year. Films that were expected to do well fell flat while quite a handful of small budget movies fared well with strong content. But then the industry cannot run on these small films alone because they have their limitations and there is a limit to which they can earn," Komal Nahta, Bollywood trade analyst said.

This year nine films made it to the coveted Rs 100-crore club — Tiger Zinda Hai, Golmaal Again, Judwaa 2 (Rs 140 crore), Bahubali 2(Hindi), Raees (Rs 135 crore), Jolly LLB 2 (Rs 120 crore), Toilet - Ek Prem Katha (Rs 135 crore), Tubelight (Rs 120 crore) and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya (Rs 115 crore).

According to a latest report by online ticket booking platform BookMyShow with over 1450 films that were listed on the site in 2017, it was clearly the year of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. BookMyShow alone sold over 16 million tickets for the film, which had consecutive run of 175 days at the box office. For the portal, the most successful films after Baahubali 2 were Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again and Akshay Kumar-starrer Jolly LLB 2.

While Bahubali 2, Golmaal Again and Tiger Zinda Hai were the hits, the industry had misses too, where even star cast and good content failed to fill the box office coffers.

“Even the Khans couldn’t guarantee success this season. Films like Harry Met Sejal and Jagga Jasoos are classic examples of how even a star cast couldn’t assure success,” said analyst Atul Mohan.

While SRK-starrer Harry Met Sejal made about Rs 95 crore and Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer Jagga Jasoos made about Rs 55 crore, there were others like Simran, Rangoon, Ok Jaanu and Raabta that couldn’t even cross Rs 25 crore at the box office in their full run.

After sacrificing their blood and sweat, film-maker SS Rajamouli and producers must be laughing all their way to the bank, as Baahubali 2 has created a historic record at the box-office.

The magnum opus war drama film opened to a tremendous response in India as it raked-in approximately 41 crore in the Hindi dubbed version and 80 cr after combining the collections of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam versions.

Making a total of 121 crore on Day 1, Baahubali: The Conclusion proved to be the highest first day grosser in the history of domestic box-office.
