Trying to flesh out my Vis Dev portfolio! Help!
This is a hekkin long post, so if you want to read more about my visual development concept art journey, read on.
So I thought I was going to make my final Vis Dev portfolio half Braidy von Althuis stuff and half Fatal Mechanisms stuff (so half stuff for kids and half hard sci-fi), but now I'm thinking it's actually going to be half BvA and half Spectacular, Spectacular!
For context, video game studios are very particular about what they'd like to see. If I was going to work for a studio like Sucker Punch, for example, they're probably going to want to see more realistic artwork in my portfolio. If I go to apply for Blizzard, though, they are going to want to see more cartoony stuff because that's just the type of work they do.
That being said, I figured I would have both types of artwork in my portfolio to make me absolutely irresistible... and here's the dilemma.
I already know I'm going to include the Braidy von Althuis stuff and the plan is to tailor every single one of my Vis Dev homework assignments to be Braidy von Althuis themed. Here's some examples of this artwork. This stuff is definitely more whimsical and would be better for a Blizzard application.
Clearly it's way stylized and cartoony.
My weakness comes from not having a lot of hyper-realist stuff in my portfolio that would be suitable for more mature games, so clearly I need that. I thought at first that I would focus on my Fatal Mechanisms universe, which is hard science fiction, but then I remembered...
I already worked on something more mature! I don't have any art of it anymore and would have needed to rework the artwork anyway, but for my BFA thesis I created a concept for a Silent Hill inspired horror called Spectacular, Spectacular! It's creepy! It's circus-themed!
Either way, I have fleshed-out universes for both of these things, I'm just not sure which one I want to choose.
What do you think?

Read the full article

Hello lovely! Sadly it's that time of year I'm dying of heat and my titties feel like they're melting off! I hate it! Could you do something with how BVA would react to their girl walking around naked and fanning herself because she doesn't wanna melt ?
For the first time in a while, Valter and Alex were getting along. Valter even convinced the Dane to play Call of Duty as long as he promised to go easy on him for the first few rounds. They sat on the couch, eyes glued to the television until a flash of skin distracted Alex from the screen.
You walked by, set on making it to the kitchen to refill your glass with ice water. The heat made you miserable, only made worse by the Swedes who luxuriated in warmer weather. Anything was better than the bitter cold they were used to at home. They all tanned well and came in from the outside with smiles on. How dare they not melt as you did whenever the temperature peaked?
But there were methods of keeping cool, such as forgoing a top just to get some air under your arms. When you turned around, a puppyish pair of blue eyes had followed. You heard Valter yelling from the living room for Alex to return, but the Dane’s attention was elsewhere — namely, on your exposed chest.
“Feeling a little hot today?” He said, giving you that coy bite of his lip.
“Oh, you noticed?” You huffed, fanning your burning cheeks.
“How could I not?”
Bill came in and the same bug-eyed look came over his neutral expression. “Honey, did you forget a piece of your outfit?”
“No!” You exclaimed. “It’s too hot. And I can’t have you all buzzing around me like flies on hot garbage.”
Alex took your hand, urging you along. “Come, come. Let’s go take a nice cold shower together.”
Unable or simply unwilling to fight him off, you allowed him to lead you through the house. Alex stopped at the entrance to the living room, wiggling his eyebrows once Valter noticed your naked top-half.
“Um! Hello. Hi. Can I have some?”
Alex shook his head. “No. I called dibs.”
“You made us lose the game, Andersen,” Valter muttered, crossing his arms.
“Eh... I think I won overall in life. You have fun playing guns with twelve-year-olds. We’re gonna go cool off for a little while. See ya, Salty.”

Playing volleyball with the guys would be so fun, since all of them are athletically inclined and their comments would be hilarious.
Alex would insist you pick teams, the Swedes forming one and you and the Dane be the other, his competitiveness showing through after a few rounds.
Valter would make many jokes and comments, occasionally staring at you after one particularly hard serve, making your breasts bounce at the movement.
Bill was in a playful mood, meaning you got lots of flirty ass slaps when the ball kept going out of bounds.

You know who needs a backstory- No, i take it back. Needs a personality? D.Va D.Va has absolutely no lore of her own - not counting the one paragraph on the wiki that says shes a StarCraft Pro (which I hear they retconned) No comics, no animated shorts, no relationship with any of people in Overwatch or Talon that I know of. She's kind of just... There. Want me to be brutally honest? She's got almost no personality. Almost every voice line of hers is "Gamer Talk", most of which, you'd never ever hear someone say in real life (or even in games, now that I think about it) so it makes her feel like a gimmick than a character. Compare D.Va to... I don't know... Tracer. What do we know about Tracer's personality? She's virtuous beyond words (almost to a fault), has a naive outlook on the line between good and evil (then again, most of the OW world does). Shes confident, loves inspiring others to be heroes, can get the job done, but would rather have fun. She's just happy to be there, even if it means she has to fight. Lena knows what Overwatch stood/stands for to people all over the world, and makes it her mission in life to live up to that ideal. D.Va? There's not much. She's a gamer, she's got great reflexes and she's cocky. That's about it. Because we've got so few genuine character traits (or moments) shown to us, and because we've got no stories featuring her to highlight what she's really like when not on the battlefield, and because her interactions with other heroes are minimal at best, we have a severely one dimensional character that feels borderline fanservice. In fact, most of the other Heroes don't even have much to say about or to her, and their interactions tend to be comprised of her saying/replying with another "Gamer talk" quote. I would love to know more about her, but as it is, D.Va just feels very one note. She's a gamer. She's got a mech. That's all. I want to know more, and as the only original Overwatch hero to still not appear in her own story - outside of maybe Zenyatta, but I'm not sure - she definitely deserves it. D.Va needs a personality of her own and deserves to be more than a "QT gamer gril gf" for people to drool over.
