hell, the way that cordelia INSULTS the scoobies as a group! it isn't vicious. it is flat, just like her insult to xander. she's doing this because she's a Mean Girl again now and so she Isn't Their Friend. and it says so much that the scoobies aren't annoyed or hurt by her frothy, meaningless insults, which have always been frothy and meaningless.

this is so very much a season of trying to step back into the ghost of something that is dead. we've been seeing that in so many characters and i think it's so fascinating the way that it shows up in cordelia, who is, as has been established, a mirror of buffy. the buffy-that-wasn't. just like buffy, cordelia had her big first life-changing love -- just like buffy, cordelia got burned, badly, and is now trying to just Be That Girl She Was before everything changed for her. the people around her see her for what she is, but they participate in the masquerade because they think it will make her feel better. except no one is really feeling better at all, actually.

My (cautious) thoughts about the Good Omens/NG happenings

I've not been in the Good Omens fandom for a couple years. Season 2 briefly re-ignited my interest, but after watching it, I basically lost interest for good. A mix of things drove me away, I think mostly that (1) I thought Season 2 quite poorly-written, and, more relevant to this post, (2) I'd grown a little tired of the Neil Gaiman idolizing that I'd seen in the online fandom spaces.

So that said, I care little about the S3 90-minute-feature situation (though I'm glad the remaining fans will get some closure). And, of course, I do not know if Gaiman actually did all what he's being accused of - that doesn't really matter to what I'm about to discuss. More interestingly, this puts me in mind of something that's been bothering me about many fandom spaces, and I wanted to pen (digital pen?) my thoughts.

To me, what seems to be going on right now's a good demonstration of why over-attaching yourself to a fandom and idolizing creators, especially those that you see as your 'political ally', is probably not a great idea. From what I've seen, GOmens fans aren't just upset but rather deeply personally betrayed. This reminds me (distantly) of the Joss Whedon craze when BTVS fans basically elevated him to 'writing god'/genius status, and all but worshipped him (as seen in many notes to fanfics written in the early 2000s).

In my view, a similar but much more personal 'idolization' happened with Gaiman. (more under the line thingie)

A lot of fandom discourse (that I've seen) doesn't seem to get that creators, no matter how politically aligned with one's own views, aren't fictional characters, they aren't one's friends, nor are they 'comfort people'. I mean, I guess they could be insofar as you make them into your 'comfort people', but it's through no action of theirs. Nothing wrong (of course) in taking comfort in an author's work, but clearly for many it's a far more personal thing that just that.

Another thing: interacting with the creator's work and social media presence, one is NOT interacting with them, nor really getting to know them. Sometimes fandoms seem to forget this and kind of just perpetuate this made-up version of the author that shares very little with the actual human being that exists somewhere out there in the world, has flaws (small or... not so small), and probably occasionally acts dishonest, petty, judgmental, selfish, etc. in the best of cases. That it doesn't happen publicly doesn't mean it never happens at all. Attaching oneself to a made-up, idealized version of an author (making it 'YOUR Neil Gailman', 'YOUR comfort author') probably feels nice, but it kind of distorts reality. Makes you feel like the author's a lot personally closer to you than they actually are, like you know them better than you actually do.

It makes sense why this happens: no one likes to feel that the creator of something they love's not a great person. At least, it's hard to come to terms with this suddenly. I had a similar (though much less intense) experience with this one creator, S, whose content on medieval armor/weaponry I enjoyed very much. Later, S turned out to be... not such a great person. And yeah, it felt unpleasant, precisely because I liked the guy's content AND I liked his public persona, and ended up disappointed in both. Because I liked both in connection to each other, not independently. In this case, it didn't take long to separate the artist from the content, but in cases like GOmens emotional investment runs much more intense.

But so I think this is a big part of what's happening here with the NG situation: quite a few GO fans have let it get to that stage where they've identified so strongly with a creator through his works, political support and public persona that they felt like they actually deeply knew them. All the info going against that seems to come as not just a disappointment because NG did something immoral (which, if the allegations are true, he obviously did!) but rather a very personal betrayal. The sentiment I'm seeing seems to be less 'oh, this guy I liked isn't really who I thought he was, this sucks', and more 'I have been betrayed/hurt/deceived', as in 'me, personally'.

On the same note, I feel like this relates, too, to the 'x is so precious', 'x needs to be protected at all costs', 'x can do no wrong' kind of mentality about favourite authors, which seemed pervasive in the GO community (at least when I used to run in those fandom circles a couple years back).

So in my mind, we're seeing (and, in some cases, feeling) the natural conclusion to undue author idolization. It never really pays to forget that authors, like all public figures, only show a small part of themselves, and letting your imagination get away from you with just that part... well. Maybe not a great idea?

WRITING WARNINGS : mentions of abuse (his father &. his relationship with darla), dark / evil thoughts, stalking and delusional behavior, hallucinations, sexist thoughts (as he’s a vampire 200+ years old so like come on he was around that time- he eventually learns his lesson), physically assault as in like fighting terms, and i think that’s it? idunno tell me if there’s more and i missed them!

okay so i headcanon that back when he was human — back as liam, he had those murderous thoughts that angelus later acted upon. especially with how cruel his father was to his mother, he wanted to absolutely murder his father for the way he acted towards her. liam was a total mama’s boy, in fact, i have so many headcanons about her too plus i named her in my mind but y’all don’t wanna hear about that 😭🫶🏻! but liam was so much of a mama’s boy that he took on the name, angelus, when he had been re-born as a vampire solely because that had been the name that his mother originally wanted to name him but his father had chosen liam.

the reason why liam was so bad and terrible to those when he was human, happened to be due to the fact that his mother had died when he was young. which had left him with his utterly cruel father and so he built up walls to protect himself, turning himself worse than his own father to the point where his father hated him as much as he hated his own late wife. he learned from his father that women were simply objections of his own pleasure and so he, in more modern terms, became a fuckboy.

liam had been so desperate to constantly have a woman in his bed that he began stalking the women that worked at the brothels whenever they would go home. he had believed they were his and his only to mess with, to break and claim. the women who worked at the brothels seemed to love it when it came from him only, considering how heavenly handsome he was born. that was one of the many topics of which he had physically fought his father upon — quickly having his left shoulder broken by his old man for being caught stalking women.

only a few months later after that, he had found darla. the pretty little blonde whom found him at a brothel one night and decided that he shall be hers. so darla had followed him as he followed the women around to their homes, watching as he saw them undress themselves and mutter remarks about how the women were his.

darla then later tricked him into that alleyway under the disguise that she had seen that his women were being manhandled by someone other than him which had him murderous. he began speaking quite loudly and sounded delusional as he told darla all of which he would do to the women who had betrayed him, how he would tear them apart piece by piece and watch as their blood would cascade down the brick of the alleyway. not realizing in his anger how once they had gotten to the alleyway that the women weren’t there and darla had him pressed against the brick, quick to drink his own blood and give him her own as well before his heart gave out on him.

upon waking up from his grave with darla by his side, he had long forgotten his human name already as his soul had already morphed yet he had a form of hallucination when he had awoke for the first time, crawling out of his grave before he had seen darla near him. he had envisioned a pretty woman with a motherly figure and soft yet firm eyes gently smiling down at him with a soft call of angelus. which had lead the vampire to believing that was his name and the only memories that he vaguely had of his human life was how cruel he was to women and his father’s abuse — leading his first kill to be his very own father.

as he had sunk his teeth into his father and drank him dry, while hearing his heart slowly stop beating, he had simultaneously heard a soft call from the same woman who had given him the name of which he goes by claiming that she was proud of him. that had pushed him further into killing his father and then his father’s friends who had blissfully unaware walked into his childhood home ready to pull his father away for a round of drinks.

angelus later on began playing those mental games with his victims due to his own auditory hallucinations of that woman’s voice that played her own games with his mind. something that angel would learn very much later on happened to be his own mother from beyond the grave. again i could do so many headcanons on her and lowkey wanna add her to this blog ohmygoodness 😭

when angelus had gone away and gotten his soul back, his human memories and vampire memories had collided, they mashed and came rushing back to him sending him crumbling down as the gypsy escaped for her dear life after cursing him. while he was figuring out his surroundings before darla would come back to find him after the gypsy woman fled, he had seen the same older woman that he did when he died. oh angel my dear boy the woman would claim as she moved towards him and held his face in her hands seeming like she was trying to help eliminate his pain that settled in his brain. though before he could reply or do anything else, darla had returned and we all know what happened with that.

angel would then spend years, before finding buffy, holding on for dear life and trying to do his best to save others but still had that stupid mindset of having barriers built up around him leading him to what had occurred at the hotel. the reason that he kept to himself in the 50s was because he wasn’t alone. the more he kept drinking the blood in those little vials, the more he would keep hallucinating his own mother who would watch out for him and she was the only reason he got out of the hotel.

okay once again gonna stop because i feel like ima make a whole ass novella out of these headcanons and i feel like it’ll be ✨insane✨for me to do it 🤭

every episode of season three thus far has really been hammering home this motif of buffy as uniquely isolated by her trauma in a way that only angel can fully understand! which is understandable, but it does make me long for the imaginary timeline in my head where jenny was the one who was brought back, in large part because something about a world where jenny and drusilla were treated as buffy's season three kindred spirits instead of angel would hit really hard, i think.

I watched The Nox tonight (in one go - husband was on bedtime duty and I put off the post-dinner clear-up 😀). I’ll post about it later, but the main thing I remembered about it before re-watching was that Armin Shimerman was in the episode (between playing Quark in DS9 and playing Principal Synder in BTVS).

Ok I figured out the tumblr algorithm ig bc posting about spike this morning and suddenly my fyp is all btvs gifs all day

So I fucked up by tagging my borderline vent, personal, or stressful content posts w tags that I thought people who don't want to see it would filter.

Still tho idk if that's affected my fyp at all bc I think it takes posting a tag and liking a tag and THEN it's in the fyp and it's 80% of it

I just want to not see the gege akutami slander bc the way he wrote jujutsu kaisen is perfect and intricate and considerate and insightful and it just takes several reads to get it. You gotta focus on different perspectives, see the forest from the trees, read better translations.

But at this point I have no beef and practically no nagging questions. He gave us closure, explanation, joy, and enough open-ended mystery to let us all interpret some things differently - like whether Gojo and Geto are alive.

But the continuity errors, the... On God gege knows what he's doing. That, the change in art style, it's all intentional. (when he makes a mistake he announces it to let us know, even when it's a small thing.) I pinned my reaction to jjk 271 and update it every time I have a realization that builds more clarity.

I try to be humble bc yeah I have (mostly trivial) theories that can't be proven, but are canon to me (though I always give a disclaimer when telling anyone that Kenjaku knocked up coach takagi with todo aoi, for example).

I know that it took 5 watches to understand the anime. I know that 2 reads through the manga with shonen jump's translation helped a lot, but it's a lot of information to process, and a third full read with better translations and notes is what it took for me to actually feel like I know what's going on. And I love that everything isn't spelled out and dragging us by the hand like, I tried to read or re-watch Naruto and simply cannot bc it repeats itself and is so blunt. Being able to make connections and put the clues together has been my life's joy this past year. And if gege wrapped everything up perfectly, frankly, I would not be coping well.

In the end, even if satosugu lives on in the flesh, I'm so glad jjk is over now. Bc even if we get a sequel where they are revealed (I imagine they'd fake their death to be unregistered w jujutsu headquarters and relieved of their "strongest" status and execution sentence), those two deserve a fucking break, and the jjk fandom needs time to reflect on their lives and deaths. We deserve this break to look at things differently.

Because ultimately, we see things differently after people die. We reflect on harsh realities, we go through anger, denial, what if, why, etc. We see their existence as human and finite - which is something Gojo never got before. Immortalized as the face of jujutsu kaisen, even to people who can't name the series. We, the jjk fandom, have objectified Gojo for our own entertainment. We need time to reflect on the way he's been taken at face value, misunderstood, oversexualized, etc etc - he's been treated by people irl just the way he was treated in the series. We are no better. (obv not every single person has done this but it's far overshadowing the understanding analysis and acceptance of his true life).

EXCELLENT QUESTION.................... i don't remember hahaha

nah ok iirc i caught it on tv when season 6 was airing and got hooked and i think i watched the whole thing up to that point in, like, a week. i don't remember what particularly caught me, but at the time, i was living with my friend and wasn't in school or working, so i didn't have a lot going on and found it strangely soothing. i still do! it's my go-to comfort show. something about michael's deep, steady voice, especially on the VOs, and all the whump and found family was (and is) really relaxing to me. and i like that they help people who no one else can help and that it's not afraid to be sentimental. you know, it's this perfect blend of comedy, action, tragedy, drama, mystery, and romance.

around the same time, i was also watching flashpoint, which is another series about veterans, snipers, and found family with a lot of whump lol for some reason, i'm really drawn to those kind of characters and stories. bucky is my fave in marvel; widowmaker and ana are my faves in overwatch; i'm one of six people who actually really like riley in btvs lol

maybe because it's people who are expected to be detached, emotionless, or not easily affected by their dire circumstances, but are in fact deeply affected and emotional despite their best efforts are really appealing to me. (ok, re: widowmaker, she is, by design, detached and emotionless, but only because she was brainwashed and even asked to be; plus, that just opens up great potential for emotion breakdowns in fanfiction! :D) (hm, i also apparently like brainwashing plots 🤔)

i also LOVVVVE mom characters, especially overly devoted and protective ones who have complicated or abusive relationships with their kids. maddie is tied with michael for my fave; mags is my fave in justified; cersei is one of my faves in asoiaf. basically, i like mama bears who are at risk of eating their cubs. again, i think it has to do with that dichotomy and contradictory nature. moms are expected to be protective of their kids, yes, but when it's to the detriment of the very kids they do all these shitty things for, that scratches a particular itch to me.

i tend to like characters who not only have layers, but have facets of their personalities that might not jive together or mesh well; they have sides of themselves that they have to fight or reconcile with. they're hard and soft. michael is an army ranger veteran, an ex-spy, a killer; he's also an abuse survivor, a lover, has a soft spot for kids. sam is a navy seal veteran, a forger, a killer; he's also a sugar baby, a booze hound, a goofball. fiona is an ex-IRA guerilla, a bomber, an arms dealer; she's also a lover, a grieving sister, someone with a fierce moral compass. jesse is a badass counter intelligence agent, a killer, a ball of rage; he's also a grieving son, a whiner, kind of a dork. i love their inner-conflicts and how those really do inform the way they interact with one another. i love that they have history and intense fights or issues, but always come back and forgive each other.

i also tend to like stories with major character death? i guess i just like high stakes! it really is the whole package for me! 😂😂

okay in terms of patterns. I don’t start with dialogue, I try to start with shorter sentences, primarily those that immediately define your pov character, and I like writing lines that put you immediately in media res, or whatever tf.

hi, i've been following you for a lil bit and started rewatching buffy (re-living my teenage years) and ive seen you talk about s6, which i absolutely agree! and i think a lot in that season has to do with how buffy's death was handled at the beginning of s2. she was killed by the master and then (being 16 and all) came back and wasn't dealing with it all that well (shocker), and tbh the main reactions from her friends was just 'to deal with it' and 'get over it'. even after Giles tries to explain to them that she might be more traumatised than she lets on. (Giles is the person who should have stepped up and said something to her but he also just let her push him away when he KNEW. HE IS THE ADULT.) ...and in the end, all of the responsibility of 'failing' to protect her friends falls on her AGAIN because she wasn't in the right mind to make a sound decision but nobody acknowledges that. it doesn't feel fair towards her. she's carrying too much on her own. ive been having feelings watching btvs from a fresh perspective and had no clue where to put this so here i am. sorry if this is weird or sudden and feel free to ignore.

hi! i've never made that connection with the start of season 2, that's actually such a good point. and it makes sense to me how differently this is handled in season 2 and 6, because the show is at very different points in the way it portrays these themes. what i like about season 6 is how it actually takes the premise of buffy coming back from the dead (and the trauma that causes) seriously. like the whole idea of buffy being pulled out of heaven by her friends and then having to pretend she's ok even though she's literally experiencing her version of hell is INSANE. i like how the season delves into the main character's trauma and how each of them are kinda fighting themselves, and how that fractures the group, and how they find their way back to each other. obviously the writing has some major issues and certain uuhm Questionable Choices were made. but yeah the whole portrayal of buffy's depression and her alienation from her friends is so well done. but also i agree she never actually got the support she really needed cause everyone was too busy with their own shit 💀 they put that girl through so much man, someone let her rest!!
