Less than three months after U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and her colleagues launched an investigation into the four major American manufacturers of inhalers, three of the companies have relented, making commitments to cap costs for their inhalers at $35 for patients who now pay much more.
25 million Americans have asthma and 16 million Americans have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), meaning over 40 million Americans rely on inhalers to breathe.
Inhalers have been available since the 1950s, and most of the drugs they use have been on the market for more than 25 years.
According to a statement from the Wisconsin Senator’s office, inhaler manufacturers sell the exact same products at a much lower costs in other countries. One of AstraZeneca’s inhalers, Breztri Aerosphere, costs $645 in the U.S.—but just $49 in the UK. Inhalers made by Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, and Teva have similar disparities.
Baldwin and her Democratic colleagues—New Mexico Sen. Ben Ray Luján, Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders—pressured the companies to lower their prices by writing letters to GSK, Boehringer Ingelheim, Teva, and AstraZeneca requesting a variety of documents that show why such higher prices are charged in America compared to Europe.
As a ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Baldwin recently announced that as a result of the letters they had secured commitments from three of the four to lower the out-of-pocket costs of inhalers to a fixed $35.00 rate.
“For the millions of Americans who rely on inhalers to breathe, this news is a major step in the right direction as we work to lower costs and hold big drug companies accountable,” said Senator Baldwin.
A full list of the inhalers and associated drugs can be viewed here.
It’s the second time in the last year that pharmaceutical companies were forced to provide reasonable prices—after the cost of insulin was similarly capped successfully at $35 per month thanks to Congressional actions led by the White House.

We have a transcription system for voicemails at my work. Someone was calling about an inhaler called Breztri. Let me tell you, the laugh that came out of me when I saw the system had transcribed it as 'breast tree' was simply inhuman.

I'm doing kind of the opposite with my fics. I'm a pharmacy tech and I work in a large central fill facility, so I see a bunch of nifty-sounding brand names, and I've decided to sprinkle them into my (currently Star Wars) fic. Cresemba is a planet, Stelara House makes kink paraphernalia, Master Kerendia the retired Jedi healer (prequel era).
Zetonna, Wixela, Stiolto, Rinvoq, Breztri, Orilissa, Steglujan...there's so much to work with.
so we all know as fantasy writers that you need to google your made up words before you start using them.
i'm now extending this rule to pharmaceutical companies:

Here are a few Star Wars-sounding drug names from the pharmacy, if you're interested:
Adcirca, Prezistra, Azasan, Delstrigo, Beyaz, Elmiron, Evista, Bevespi, Zetonna, Wixela, Stiolto, Dulera, Rinvoq, Breztri, Anoro, Aurovela
Want to help rename my OC?
So, I apparently named an original character in my Star Wars fanfic with an archaic female insult. (Once it was pointed out, I suspected I used to know that, but have long since forgotten about the historical (or any) use of the word). Oops.
I need to replace the name in . . . 2 separate fics. (No, nobody mentioned it in the comments the first time when she was just a name and a mention so I blithely had her make a full appearance in a different fic.
Suggestions welcome.
The offensive name: Quim.
I don't want to just change it to Quin, because Quinlan Vos (canon character) sometimes goes by Quin. I also have another character in a different fic called Quirret, so maybe I should just go in a totally different direction? Another letter?
The character is a former padawan of Yoda's, several before Dooku, though he knows her in her elder years. She is avian, she has feathers (which periodically moult) and while she can't actually fly, she can use her feathers to glide gracefully.
Any ideas on how we can rename her? Quail, while a bird, has a meaning as a verb which is not suitable for her character. Also, her plumage is bright in color.

GSK hits trouble with Trelegy as EU regulators block asthma indication
Tumblr media
European regulators have refused to back GlaxoSmithKline’s daily triple therapy Trelegy Ellipta for asthma, denying a label extension because there was no evidence to show a reduction of flare-ups.
It’s a blow for GSK, which hopes that Trelegy (fluticasone furoate+umeclidinium+vilanterol) will help to revive the fortunes of its respiratory diseases franchise.
The company had been propped for years thanks to its ageing asthma and COPD inhaler Advair, which finally succumbed to generic competition in the US in 2019, years after its patent expired.
GSK has no plans to appeal and has no further studies planned for European approval, after regulators from the CHMP scientific committee gave a negative opinion on the triple therapy.
The UK pharma had applied for a label extension for the drug, which is already approved in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) since 2017, to cover patients with asthma.
But the CHMP said that while trial evidence showed Trelegy improved lung function, it could not approve the drug because of the lack of evidence to show it cut the risk of exacerbations.
GSK’s problems with Trelegy, developed in partnership with Innoviva, stem from the phase 3 CAPTAIN study, which reported findings in May 2019.
This showed a statistically significant improvement in lung function compared with GSK’s double therapy Relvar/Breo (fluticasone furoate+umeclidinium), meeting its primary endpoint.
But it fell short on the secondary endpoint of an improvement of a reduction in the annual rate of moderate to severe exacerabations.
The trial showed a 13% reduction in exacerbations but this figure was not statistically significant.
The CHMP’s decision runs counter to that of the FDA, which okayed Trelegy in the asthma indication in September despite the issue with the data from CAPTAIN.
It’s also a bonus for AstraZeneca, which almost simultaneously reported phase 3 trial findings showing its injected drug tezepelumab can cut exacerbations in severe asthma.
AZ is also developing a rival triple therapy inhaler, Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide+glycopyrrolate+formoterol fumarate), which is already approved in the US in COPD and is in late-stage development in asthma.
A GSK spokesperson said: “We have a strong track record of bringing new treatment options to asthma patients in Europe and so while we are disappointed that these patients will not have access to Trelegy Ellipta for asthma, we remain committed to supporting them with our existing portfolio of medicines and investigating further innovative treatment options for asthma.”
“Trelegy Ellipta is already approved in four markets to date including the US and Japan for the treatment of asthma. These approvals were based on robust data which showed Trelegy Ellipta improved lung function and symptom control in adult asthma patients.”

HEALTHCARE’s INFLUENCE ON THE ECONOMY
This post is being updated.... 3 1/2 years after the original post.
We’ve all read about how healthcare represents a growing percentage of our economy, but some anecdotal evidence recently brought this home for me.
I don’t watch much TV, but a few weeks ago I noticed several back to back ads for drugs I had never heard of.  A similar experience when I read my weekly magazines.  I started jotting down the names of every ad for drugs I saw... and in a two week period, wrote down OVER 100.
Not a very scientific survey..... but hits home how pervasive pharmaceutical companies are in our lives.
Here’s my list (which today is over twice as along as 3 years ago... even though I haven’t been diligent in tracking recently)
