999 is. Gosh. She's everything to me.
Because of her long career, 999 has done just about every job there is to do on a railway, but by far the one she's best at and the one she found the most fun is being a touring engine and being great at it. You know that scene in Devil Wears Prada where Andrea goes to the Paris Fashion Show and part of her job is knowing who everyone is, their relationships to each other, and what their goals and motives are for being at the show? Being a touring show engine means doing all of that and also knowing your mark and where you'll be in two weeks, but you don't have anyone helping you. 999 knows every engine worth knowing, the benefit of which is that you might also get to. Well. Know them-know them. *waggles eyebrows*
Famous Engines have no trouble snagging dates, and 999 has fully and totally embraced the Famous Engine lifestyle, complete with the part where she hooks up with someone and then tries to get her date to hook up with one of her single friends instead. That might actually be her favorite part, since she's.... kiiiiinda spoken for.

I talked a bit in the Truro post about how engines are polyamorous by nature with a few notable exceptions. This isn't one of them, since 999 gets to jet off to the Railway Speed Record party once a year and have her fun, but she always has a nice place to come home to.
Being the only steam engines at the MSI for years, this definitely started as a situationship with both parties fully intending to keep it that way. After all, 999 is a Famous Engine, and the most notable thing 2903 ever did was be really big and heavy. It's not much of a match, and no one thinks of them as a power couple. However....
Well, 999 likes to buck expectations. She also likes engines who don't take things too seriously, and she likes being able to shed that Famous persona whenever it suits her. She also likes big engines. 2903 pretty well covers all the bases here. He even cleans up nice if you decide to take him out for an evening, although not without the complaint. Which is why she doesn't take him out that often. He's perfectly fine with that.
When 2903 moved to the IRM, it was also probably 999 who suggested that she and Pioneer could take field trips to go visit their very good friends at the other museum. Pioneer wouldn't think to be so forward, but 999 has less of a problem being charmingly audacious, and it certainly worked out in both their favors' (as well as a few other engines').
One of my favorite tropes in fiction is the married couple who are always gossiping and bickering but obviously love each other very much and are still super into each other after all these years. That's the vibe here. Of course, 999 still has her freedom which is why I will at least mention one other engine I like for her.

I've not decided whether or not these two ever make it official in any capacity, but they are certainly very good friends. Gal pals, you might say.
Shipping aside, 727 is another engine 999 can fully be herself with, which is nice at a museum where your other choices for company don't rank nearly as high on the 'fun' scale. 727 understands the importance of a good gossip sesh, a virtue which neither of them have been able to impart upon the Pioneer Zephyr, despite 999's best efforts.
I said I haven't decided whether or not they actually "get together", and part of that is their different approaches to the issue. 999 gets to have her fun then go play with her favorite steam engine once a month, but 727 has a bit more responsibility to deal with keeping little planes in line and being a bigger and more integral exhibit besides. That, and she's got a bit of a crush on a certain reclusive submarine.
But 999 is a good friend, and she wants her bestie to be happy. And I did say her favorite part of the whole thing was playing matchmaker...

Boston+Boeing= Chaos(and a sad Top)
It’s the last night before Only Friends Finale and Jenny is serving up some ol’ fashion brain soup. Come get it chaos lovers I’m going to talk about Boeing for the first time because he is entering the BostonNickverse so… I watched his scenes 3 times and have a working theory on his motivations. But as always let’s use Boston to Compare Contrast.

Both Boeing and Boston are incredibly sexy on their own and they both use that to their advantage because no one expects them to be so cunning they can be. They are used to reading people to become what they need. They are self assured that they will get whatever prey they desire so confidence radiates from both of them. Boeing uses lies of comfort with a friendly smile and willing to listening ear to get his prey where he wants. Boston on the other hand uses honesty bravado to shock his prey into whatever he needs.
Both men schemed to break apart TopMew while the couple wasn’t dating but in a vulnerable position. Both of them exploited Top’s weaknesses not because either one loved Top but to fulfill their own self absorbed reason for Top to Break Things off with Mew. Boston wanted to break things up for his friend because TopMew was messing with their friendship dynamic and on a selfish level Boston wanted to prove he was better than Mew multiplied by his growing feelings for Nick. He NEEDED to prove to top and himself Boston is the best. Boeing wanted to punish Top for breaking up with him after 3 months. I believe he did love Sand at some point. I’m inferring this from Boeings career as a flight attendant that he wanted to travel the world and bring Sand with him. Intertwining your long term goals with someone shows scars and I think you can see them in Sand’s Dream and Boeing’s career. So Boeing made a sacrifice to date Top thinking it would be a better dream someone rich and going places. Boeing won’t have to wait to complete his dream. But Top broke things off with him after 3 months. From a pride stand point Boeing couldn’t let Top get into a more serious relationship because it looks bad on Boeing he couldn’t keep Top when Mew could.
The main difference between Boston and Boeing when it came to attacking TopMew is Boston did want to keep Mew out of his scheming because he loved Mew as a brother. Boeing wasn’t going to let anyone keep him back from ruining Top’s little dream of love because Top stole Boeing from Sand which is in his head all Top’s fault. So seducing Mew meant nothing to Boeing it was just a way to get more cracks in the relationship hopefully breaking them apart forever. In Contrast Boston kept his scheming to Top. He didn’t try to meddle directly with mew because he wanted to maintain their friendship. Boston yells at Nick “NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO KNOW ABOUT ME AND TOP.” And he tells Ray he’d be disgusting to expose TopBoston to Mew. Boston didn’t want to hurt Mew. Boston wanted Top to be Jealous of Ray and be seduced by Boston and end things with Mew. Boston did give up after Top accused him of hating Mew or having animosity towards mew. I think that out what Boston was doing into perspective. He was crossing lines he shouldn’t. Boston decides after this to try to calm things down.
I think both failures to break up TopMew put things into perspective for Boston and Boeing. Boeing was reminded of his relationship with Sand and tried to repair it. Boston tried to settle down a bit and stop focusing on his friends. He didn’t need to meddle with them he was just getting in trouble.
Prediction time: I think Boston was the first guy Top slept with after Boeing. Boeing will happen to see Boston at the bar on the day of or day before the phone repair maybe Boeing will say something revealing about Mew or Ray and Boston will fight back for them. Either Bostons phone screen gets smashed during this OR Boeing after getting angry at whatever Boston will say will forward Atom’s expose account to the university and maybe send it around the big social circles so Boston is taken down a notch or two.

"Good."
Standing quite the distance from the flat roof ledge they were focusing on, Setesh gave a light nod. After having gotten up there, the way back down had broken under Setesh's weight, meaning they would have to go through a door leading into a populated building to get back down. Somehow, they didn't think that would end well.
There was, however, another building a distance from this one, which they would reach with a proper leap. It still had its stairs in one piece doing down the side of it. They looked sturdier than the last ones they'd used as well. If there weren't any more miscalculations, they could use them with little issue.
Boe's small frame didn't add a huge amount of weight, meaning the adjustments required would be minimal. The real concern was how fragile organics were. They weren't quite human in the same sense as the others in this world, but they still bruised. Their skin could still tear. Setesh's hard surfaces would offer barely any comfort or protection from inertia this maneuver would cause. There was the possibility that might hit their head against Setesh's chassis. They doubted Boe would get a concussion from something like that, but who knew? Stanger things had happened. Then there were the pinching hazards around their joints, even with weather-proofing seals in place around them.
Knowing that Boe knew they would not let them fall, they lowered their body down. Setesh braced themself and made sure to keep a firm hold on Boe with their extra arms, leaving their main arms available for additional balancing and landing support.
The humans would no doubt notice the heavy thumping of their feet above them, so they had to make this quick.
"Hold on tight and close your eyes."
In a matter of seconds, their additional leg actuation strength sprung into action. After a number of skipping steps, they reached the edge of the building. In true longjumper fashion, they played it dangerously close at their final leap. In mid-air, their legs rose up, albeit with some difficulty while having to take into account the space delegated to Boe's body on their front.
Their tail dragged behind them in the air. Despite its notable heft, it seemed near weightless in this maneuver.
They stretched their feet out forwards until they broke the barrier between having many meters of air beneath them to hard roofing. Once the position was secured, they angled their legs down again for the landing. Their heavy claws smashed into the rocky surface beneath them.
The tail followed, slamming down with the crunching and crashing sound of metal against stone sheets and gravel for a brief moment before rising back up into the air.
Rather than anchor themselves into it, they made several smaller hops as their momentum decreased, eventually coming to enough of a halt to bend down fully with their hips raised high and press their hands into the ground.
They rotated their head to angle the optics on the side of their faceplate towards Boe. At leas, enough so to see them.

Pan Am R&D
Pan Am was founded by Juan Trippe on March 14, 1927 and played an important role in shaping the global airline industry into what we have today. Pan Am was originally founded as a small air mail and passenger service that operated between Key West, Florida and Havana Cuba, but quickly expanded its routes to the other parts of the Caribbean and South America. In 1939 Pan Am became the first airline to routinely fly passengers across the Atlantic Ocean, flying from New York to Marseilles, France. In 1958, Pan Am was one of the first airlines to introduce jet travel with the Boeing 707, which made international travel faster and even more comfortable. This move sparked the Jet Age in commercial aviation. Pan Am would continue to be a juggernaut in worldwide travel, and would even dabble in the Space Age by partnering with NASA, playing a role in the early stages of the Apollo moon missions, including the development of the Lunar Module. In the early 1990s Pan Am experienced a mix of financial, operational, and competitive issues leading to its bankruptcy and liquidation in the early 1990s.
On October 30th, 1977 Pan Am flight 50 was a historic flight held to celebrate the airline’s 50th anniversary. This flight was the first commercial airline flight to fly over both the North and South Poles. The flight started in San Francisco, flew over the North Pole, stopped in London, flew over South Africa, flew over the South Pole, stopped in New Zealand, and then returned to San Francisco. The flight took a total of 54 hours and 7 minutes to complete. During the flight, passengers were treated to special meals, fine wines and Gucci fashion shows as they headed towards the North Pole. Unlike previous polar flights, which were primarily for the wealthy, this flight was accessible to a wider range of passengers allowing many more people to see the beauty of the poles. (Project Assumption) On March 14, 2027, Panam will return to the Airline scene with Pan Am 100 to celebrate its 100th anniversary, creating a unique flight experience with unique branding to kick off the return of Pan Am in the 21st century.
The marketing objective of Pan Am 100 is to create an exciting “kick off” event for the return of the airline, raising awareness and generating excitement for the return of the airline. Pan Am’s goal will be to return to the top international airline. Success will be measured  in the short term by the number of customers who buy tickets to fly in Pan Am 100, and going forward it will be measured by the number of countries passengers can travel to amenity quality, availability of non stop flights, and the speed of flights. Competition includes: Singapore Airlines (Singapore Airlines Official Website | Book International Flight Tickets), Qatar Airways (Book Flights with a World-class Airline | Qatar Airways), Eva Air (Homepage - EVA Air | North America (English)), and Emirates (Book a flight | Emirates United States). The target audience for the event and the airline is commercial, we want the highest number of people to ride and have it be accessible. It is very important to provide safe and convenient international travel. Pan Am 100 will generate excitement for the return of the Pan Am airline as a whole by showcasing the airline's mastery in international travel and on flight experience. We will present an experience to the customer that is something that they do not want to miss, with an excited yet refined tone.

The three first mares from the left has grown up, and into beautiful, mature mares. Or almost mature. They are 3 yo as of today. From left to right we have BOE Moonlit Debate, BOE Alternative Lilypad, BOE Chapline, BOE Alreda and soon to be retired mare BOE Fashion Forward! Her son BOE Lady's Protector will be taking over for her next month.
These are of course not all the mares at our stable, we are missing about six of them in this picture not limited to BOE Brillianta, BOE Floretta, RRS Dantonia and Ciao Bella BL, Sparrow's Dandelion and Kalliope T.

Wonder Woman 1984 Couldn’t Save the Story

I’ve been looking forward to the sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman since the film ended with Wonder Woman herself leaping from the top of a building and soaring into the credits. So when it was announced that Wonder Woman 1984 was going to be available on HBO Max Christmas Day, I went to bed each night with visions of indestructible bracelets dancing in my head.
Then it finally arrived. Christmas. WW84. 
My wife and I settled into the couch with a bucket of Cherry Coke, a cornucopia of candy, and two obnoxious bowls of fresh popped popcorn soaked in butter. It was the movie-going experience I had been missing this year.
I love Wonder Woman. I didn’t grow up on the source material. I grew up on Lynda Carter. Reruns of the campy Wonder Woman TV show, which originally ran from 1975–1979 were a favorite of mine as a little kid. Not only was it an entertaining show for a preschooler in the eighties with the jumping and bullet-blocking and running, but I was also in love with Lynda Carter both as Diana Prince and Wonder Woman. 
You see—sounding all Freudian alarms—my mother is a brunette and, from what I could tell at that young age, she could do anything and everything, so I grew up likening my mom to the Amazonian goddess. I also thought any pretty lady with brown hair was my mom including the woman on the Sun-Maid raisins box. (Despite my mother being a beauty queen and model—just like Lynda Carter—the real Sun-Maid Girl died at age 90 two months before I turned four.) From my vantage point, my mom was completely capable of saving the day and harvesting yummy raisins. A true wonder woman. 
I wasn’t a big reader of the Wonder Woman comics. Blame that on my time as a boy in 1984. Wonder Woman comics didn’t make their way to me and by the time I was old enough to choose my own reads, I was too deep into graphic novels about the Vietnam War, X-Men comics, and other Marvel titles. But I always knew Diana’s story and powers, and recognized her as one of the most powerful characters to grace the pages of comic books.
Settled into the couch, we hit play and HBO Max glowed to life to give me the Christmas gift I’d been waiting months for.
The opening scene set the tone. A thrilling action scene showcasing the abilities of Diana’s people back on Themyscira. It dropped a few hints of what challenges Diana/Wonder Woman might face and the lessons she will learn or be reminded of. Good opening. And then the film fell apart and Christmas was ruined.
Nah, Christmas was fine, but Wonder Woman 1984 was a disappointment. And not as much for me as for Diana and Wonder Woman. And for actor Gal Gadot. She was robbed of an interesting story. There is no character development in WW84 for our hero. Diana is in the exact same place as she was at the end of the first film. She picks up a few new abilities along the way, but one, like flying in an invisible jet felt like director/writer/producer Patty Jenkins was force feeding me a MacGuffin only to throw it away after I agreed to swallow it. Flight is a big thing in this film but Wonder Woman learning to master it seemed wasteful as I was convinced she was learning to fly based on the way the first film ended. That’s on me.
When we left Wonder Woman in the first film, she was heartbroken for Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). When we meet her again in 1984, some seventy years after his death, she still pines for him. (See what I did there?) By the end, she’s the same. Closed off, unwilling or unable to open herself up to people, most notably to people who could love her and she could love in return. This, despite that Steve tells her that’s a stupid thing to do—remain closed off. When he comes back to life through a wish, he is filled with a zest for life, a chance to experience something again. Pine plays Steve with an almost childlike wonder and it’s fun to watch.
They missed an incredible opportunity to build an interesting story tying in time, the struggle and pain of being ageless—timeless. Maybe that’s how Steve comes back. He exists in a tear in time. What is the hardship of a god living among men? Not her challenging duty but her struggle.
And why 1984? For the fashion jokes? The nukes? Missed opportunity there. Especially since the year is in the title.
Kristin Wiig is great. She’s surprising as she anchors her Ghostbusters (2016) character into Barbara Minerva/Cheetah. But I wanted more form her relationship with Diana. When Barbara wishes to be like Diana, “Sexy, cool… special,” there’s a chance for her to also face the backlash of being an ageless goddess. That opportunity was dampened when Barbara cartoonishly chooses to become a full baddy. But you can’t blame Barbara, she was written that way.
Everything was written as a MacGuffin. One little thing to get us to the big moment with the big baddy—a Donald Trump-ish huckster played by Pedro Pascal. Pascal as Max Lord at first is a slimey but sympathetic character. That quickly devolves into him being a super-duper bad guy bent on world domination that overcorrects in heightening the stakes. The manner in which he goes about dominating the world is trite but also is based on a lazy Orwellian approach to what technology would be like in 1984. It gives the sense that the film was written during Lynda Carter’s heyday where 1984 still seemed futuristic.
There’s so much opportunity squandered. Diana/Wonder Woman is an ageless goddess with a lonely heart and incredible powers. How does one live like that? In the first film, Diana is learning what it means to be human. This film could have had her learning what it means to be a god among humans. Instead, the character is a pawn. She’s not driven by anything. And that’s what gets me.
Diana could be relatable. Make her the troubled messiah. She lives among us so long, she longs or struggles to be like us. And maybe losing her power—the unknown risk she takes when Steve comes back—is attractive to her so she can live and love. And if they had to bring back Chris Cline, the could have dipped into the mystique and magic of Diana’s world. Something more than a silly wish. Something more interesting that pushes Diana to face new internal struggles while working to defeat the external forces of evil.
The film sets itself up as movie that’ll deal with time. There’s a date in the title. But why 1984? For the nukes? For the broadcast Max Lord needs to tap into? For the fanny pack jokes? Jenkins and Co. could have given the theme a little more oompf by leaning into their own ideas of time and address the hardships a an ageless, nearly all powerful goddess faces. Instead, we get a joke about modern public art being trash and a WWI watch coming to life because… because the ghost of the man who owned it has come back from the beyond. Two completely unrelated things. But they didn’t have to be.
The film takes its time with the wrong beats. There are many big moments, often in the middle of the action, where Wonder Woman’s face is the focus. The only takeaway from these slowed down moments of intensity are for the sake of empowerment. And, okay, fine. That’s cool. I get it. Wonder Woman is empowering. The movie, however, is not empowering. It’s a vehicle that reduces Wonder Woman to a physically strong woman who does not develop as an individual. She’s the most dimensional inspiring cinematic female character since the offensive Captain Marvel.
Time proves to be a major influencer in the film in the way it’s wasted. When they have to fly to Cairo, they do so by stealing a jet that Diana has access to thanks to her job at the museum, and allegedly will face no consequences for hoarking a fighter jet for personal reasons. Regardless… They have to get from Washington D.C. to Cairo, a trip of just over 5,000 nautical miles. A modern Boeing 747 can fly 8,255 nautical miles on a full tank of gas. A fighter jet with a smaller tank would likely need every last drop and the wind at their backs the entire time to make the tip without refueling or plummeting into the ocean. Instead of being concerned with that, Steve and Diana choose that time to have their romantic scene. Flips and tricks and dawdling through a Fourth of July fireworks show. And why was Steve surprised by the fireworks and it being July 4th? He just arrived in a new body the day before. He certainly checked the date on a newspaper or heard something on the radio or a TV. And the Fourth of July was already a holiday before he was killed in World War I.
These gripes would be nitpicking if they weren’t so easily remedied by giving the main character an actual story arc.
Wonder Woman 1984 was a fine superhero movie. Far from the best (Captain America: Civil War). Better than the worst (Justice League). It had its share of fun action moments, but even in an action film, the action must be secondary to the story.
After watching the film, we turned on the old TV show. There’s not much character development there either. But it’s a 1970s network television procedural. It’s meant to be campy. And it was more than enough.
Following the three-hour Lynda Carter bender, I realized that you could totally edit scenes in WW84 to make a trailer about a woman who takes care of, then falls in love with, a mentally handicapped man. And that would be a great story to tell. Wonder Woman with Hollywood blockbuster money behind her deserves something interesting.

The Doctor and Ross made their way back to the observation gallery. The Doctor went over to the panel on the wall and started to do scans.
"That wasn't a gravity pocket. I know gravity pockets and they don't feel like that." The Doctor turned to meet a tree. "What do you think, Jabe? Listen to the engines. They've pitched up about thirty Hertz. That dodgy or what?"
"It's the sound of metal. It doesn't make any sense to me," Jabe replied.
"Where's the engine room?"
"I don't know," he paused, "But the maintenance duct is just behind our guest suite. I could show you and your…husband."
"He's not my husband," she corrected quickly.
"Partner?"
"No."
"Concubinus?"
"Nope."
"Prostitute?"
Ross finally butt in, annoyed. "Whatever I am, it must be invisible. Do you mind?" He frowned. "Tell you what, you two go and pollinate. I'm going to catch up with family. Quick word with Michael Jackson," he referred to Cassandra.
"Don't start a fight," she warned. She turned and took Jabe's offered arm. "I'm all yours," she smiled.
"I want you home by midnight," Ross called after them.
The two aliens made their way into the maintenance duct. They conversed a little as they continued down the hall of wires. It seemed like it went on forever.
"So tell me, Jabe, what's a tree like you doing in a place like this," she asked.
"Respect for the Earth."Jabe gave a small smile. "Well, perhaps it's a case of having to be seen at the right occasion."
"In case your share prices drop?" She smiled back. "I know you lot. You've got massive forests everywhere, roots everywhere, and there's always money in land."
"All the same, we respect the Earth as family. So many species evolved from that planet. Mankind is only one. I'm another. My ancestors were transplanted from the planet down below, and I'm a direct descendent of the Tropical Rainforest."
"Excuse me," she pardoned herself as she took out her Sonic Screwdriver. The Doctor began to scan the door panel.
"And what about your ancestry, Doctor? Perhaps you could tell a story or two. Perhaps a woman only enjoys trouble when there's nothing else left. I scanned you earlier. The metal machine had trouble identifying your species. It refused to admit your existence."
The Doctor froze. Jabe knew who she was. He knew what happened. The pained Time Lord stared off, flashing back to that fateful day.
"Even when it named you, I wouldn't believe it. But it was right. I know where you're from. Forgive me for intruding, but it's remarkable that you even exist. I just wanted to say how sorry I am."
Jabe gently placed a hand on the Doctor's arm. She instinctively placed hers on top of his. A single tear dripped down her face. She quickly wiped the tear and opened the door to the engine room. The Doctor shook her head, ridding herself of the painful memories. They both stepped inside the engine room.
"Is it me, or is it a bit nippy?" The Doctor questioned while staring at the giant fans running at full blast. "Fair do's, though, that's a great bit of air conditioning. Sort of nice and old fashioned. Bet they call it retro," she laughed and turned from the giant fans. She then began to scan another panel on the wall.
"Gotcha," she said as she pulled off the panel cover. A metal spider-like creature scuttled out and up the nearest wall. "What the hell's that?"
"Is that part of the retro," Jabe questioned, innocently.
The leather clad alien aimed her screwdriver at the spider as Jabe lassoes it.
"Hey, nice liana," she complimented with a smile.
"Thank you. We're not supposed to show them in public."
"Don't worry, I won't tell anybody," the Doctor reassured. "Now then, who's been bringing their pets on board?"
"What does it do?"
"Sabotage."
"Earth death in ten minutes," the computer reminded.
"And the temperature's about to rocket. Come on," she led Jabe back out of the wire pathway, and back to the hallways. They both quickly made their way to the steward's office.
Once they were outside the office the Doctor noticed the smoke, and smell coming from within. The steward was dead.
"Hold on. Get back."
She soniced the door's panel, causing the sun filter to rise.
"Is the steward in there," asked Jabe.
"You can smell him. Hold on, there's another sun filter programmed to descend."
She quickly ran off, following the signal. She hoped no one was in the room. She soon found the room with the descending filter. The Doctor started to work on raising it as fast as she could.
"Anyone in there," she called out.
"Open the door," she heard Ross yell from within. She rolled her eyes, not even surprised.
"Oh, well, it would be you. Hold on. Give us two ticks." She spoke as she continued to work.
"Sun filter rising," the computer announced.
Ross and the Doctor both began to relax.
"Sun filter descending," the computer announced once more.
"Just what we need," the Doctor said, annoyed. "The computer's getting clever."
"Stop mucking about," Ross yelled.
The Doctor began to stress out. "I'm not mucking about. It's fighting back."
After a few nail-biting seconds the Doctor finally got the filter to rise, and stay up.
"The whole door's jammed. I can't open it. Stay there!" She told him before heading off towards the observation gallery.
The Doctor walked inside the gallery as Jabe was giving everyone a briefing. She took the spider from Jabe, and inspected it once more.
"I'm afraid the steward is dead," Jabe informed them.
"Who killed him," The Moxx of Balhoon asked.
"The whole event was sponsored by the Face of Boe. He invited us. Talk to the Face. Talk to the Face," Cassandra said.
"Easy way of finding out. Someone brought their little pet on board. Let's send him back to master."
She set the spider on the ground. It scuffled off towards Cassandra, scanned her, and then moved on. It then moved onto the black gowned group.
"The Adherents of the Repeated Meme. J'accuse," Cassandra accused.
"That's all very well, and really kind of obvious, but if you think about it…" The Doctor moved towards the group. The leader swung its arm at her. She caught it, and ripped it out. "A Repeated Meme is just an idea. And that's all they are, an idea."
She pulled the main control wire from the arm. All of the Adherents fell to the floor.
"Remote controlled Droids. Nice little cover for the real troublemaker. Go on, Jimbo," she nudged the spider. "Go home."
The spider quickly scuffled off to Cassandra.
"I bet you were the school swot and never got kissed. At arms," Cassandra commanded. Her attendants raised their spray guns.
"What are you gonna do, moisturize me," she asked sarcastically.
"With acid. Oh, you're too late. My spiders have control of the mainframe. Oh, you all carried them as gifts; tax free, past every code wall. I'm not just a pretty face," Cassandra smiled.
"Sabotaging the ship when you're still on it? How stupid's that?" The Doctor crossed her arms.
"I'd hoped to manufacture a hostage situation with myself as one of the victims. The compensation would have been enormous."
"Five billion years and it still comes down to money," the Doctor was astonished at the selfishness of humans.
"You're just as useful dead, all of you. I have shares in your rival companies and they'll tripe in price as soon as you're dead. My spiders are primed and ready to destroy the safety systems. How did that old Earth song go? Burn, baby, burn."
The space station shook as the spiders were activated. The force fields suddenly disappeared. They were vulnerable.
"Bye, bye, darlings," Cassandra smirked before she and her attendants beamed out.
The heat levels began to rise.
"We have to reset the computer by hand. There must be a system restore switch. Jabe, come on. You lot, just chill," she told them as she exited the gallery.
The Doctor and Jabe sped to the engine room. They only had two minutes to restore the system. No pressure. Once inside, the Doctor quickly searched for the switch. She spotted it behind the three giant fans.
"Oh, and guess where the switch is."
The Doctor pulled a breaker lever and the fans began to slow a bit. As soon as she let go and stepped away the fans reset their speed. Jabe grabbed the lever and held it down.
"You can't. The heat's going to vent through this place," the Time Lord protested.
"I know," the tree told her.
"Jabe, you're made of wood."
"Then stop wasting time, Time Lady," Jabe used the correct gender term of her race. The Doctor grinned, and nodded.
She made it passed the first fan easily. Once at the second fan she looked back at Jabe. He was still okay. They could do this! She turned back to the fan. Timing it perfectly, the Doctor ran through. When she reached the third fan a cry of pain was heard behind her. She turned to look. Jabe had combusted, and was burning alive.
'No!'
She couldn't help him. It killed her. The Doctor had to keep going. Jabe's death wouldn't be meaningless. It'll be harder to get through the last fan since they were back on full blast.
The fans were going faster than expected. The only way she could get through is if she slowed down time. It was something they were taught to do in the Academy. It wasn't easy. It took lots of concentration.
She closed her eyes and steadied her hearts. Her entire body needed to be calm. She breathed slowly and focused. In her mind everything started to slow down. The fans were at a crawling pace. Holding her breath, she stepped through.
Once she realized that it worked, her eyes flew open. She bolted forward and pulled down the breaker.
"Raise shields"
The Shields raised just in time as the Earth exploded. Once her adrenaline slowed down, she decided to return to everyone. The Doctor walked back under the fans. She stopped and stared sadly at the ashes of Jabe. No matter how many companions she had, there will always be one constant one: Death. She turned away, and strode back to the main gallery.
When she stepped inside, she saw some members mourning their loss. Seeing Ross also lifted a weight off her shoulders. However, first thing she needed to do was inform Lute and Coffa. She stepped over to them and placed a hand on both of their shoulders.
"Jabe is dead," she spoke softly. "He died a hero. Make sure he has an honoured ceremony once you return home. I'm so sorry." She turned and stepped away to let them mourn in private.
"You alright," Ross asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm full of ideas, I'm bristling with them. "She spoke angrily. "Idea number one, teleportation through five thousand degrees needs some kind of feed. Idea number two, this feed must be hidden nearby."
The Doctor walked over to the displayed Ostrich egg. She smashed it to reveal a small device.
"Idea number three, if you're as clever as me, then a teleportation feed can be reversed." The Doctor reversed the device. Cassandra beamed back in.
"Oh," she said, shocked.
"The last human," The Doctor growled, very cross.
"So, you passed my little test. Bravo. This makes you eligible to join, er, the human club," Cassandra lied.
"People have died, Cassandra. You murdered them."
"It depends on your definition of people, and that's enough of a technicality to keep your lawyers dizzy for centuries. Take me to court, the Doctor, and watch me smile and cry and flutter," Cassandra began to creak.
"And creak," asked the Doctor.
"And what?" Cassandra spoke, confused.
"Creak. You're creaking."
"What? Ah! I'm drying out! Oh, sweet heavens. Moisturize me, moisturize me! Where are my surgeons? My lovely boys! It's too hot," Cassandra cried out.
"You raised the temperature," the Doctor spoke coldly.
"Have pity! Moisturize me! Oh, oh, Doctor. I'm sorry. I'll do anything," she begged.
"Help her," Ross said, sympathetically.
"Everything has its time and everything dies," She said stone cold.
"I'm too young," Cassandra cried before exploding.
Without a second glance, the Doctor left the room. She needed pace to calm down. She didn't return until everyone was gone. When she walked back into the gallery she saw Ross staring out where the Earth once was.
"The end of the Earth. It's gone. We were too busy saving ourselves. No one saw it go. All those years, all that history, and no one was even looking. It's just-" he stopped himself.
The Doctor knew just what to do. She gently took his hand. "Come with me."
The both silently held hands as they walked back to the TARDIS. When they were inside, Ross sat on the jumper seat, defeated. The Doctor moved around the console returning them to London. When they landed, the two stepped out into a crowd of people.
"You think it'll last forever, people and cars and concrete, but it won't. One day it's all gone. Even the sky." The Doctor took a deep breath. She was going to tell him. "My planet's gone. It's dead. It burned like the Earth. It's just rocks and dust before it's time."
"What happened?"
She looked at him with sad eyes. "There was a war, and we lost."
"A war with who?" The Doctor stayed silent. "What about your people," Ross went on.
"I'm a Time Lord… well, Time Lady. I'm the last of the Time Lords. They're all gone. I'm the only survivor. I'm left travelling on my own 'cos there's no one else."
"There's me," Ross told her.
"You've seen how dangerous it is. Do you want to go home," she asked, waiting for him to confirm her fear.
"I don't know. I want…" he paused, and sniffed the air. "Oh, can you smell chips?"
The Doctor laughed, "Yeah."
"I want chips," he smiled.
"Me, too," she grinned.
"Right then, before you get me back in that box, chips it is! My treat. We've only got five billion years till the shops close."
They grinned at each other before Ross grabbed the Doctor's hand, and led her towards the glorious smell of chips.

The Pilot
I was the pilot of a C 130 transporting a giant squid to the museum of natural history in New York City. Several scientists from prestigious universities and federal agencies were on board the sixteen hour flight from Santiago, Chile. They were thrilled at the prospect of studying the giant, ten legged cephalopod. The behemoth of the southern Pacific. Two male scientists, biologists from a research facility in northwest Germany couldn't wait for the eventual landing and complex transport. They convinced the lead scientist, Hans Brenner to allow them access to the custom-built tank in the cargo hold of the airplane.

I held out my hand. She looked at me, eyebrows raised.

Sheesh somebody woke up on the wrong side of the fuselage, I thought. I withdrew my hand and fixed my gaze elsewhere. To my surprise she climbed into the empty copilots seat beside me.
"Sorry," she said. "That was rude, I'm Maggie Grantham."
She didn't offer a hand and her eyes remained steady forward but I could feel the mood shift, the tension lessen.
Over the mountains and jungles of Bolivia and on toward Venezuela and Brazil our conversation flowed effortlessly. We laughed. She shed a tear recounting her parents tragic deaths. We even began to flirt.
"I feel as if I've known you all of my life," she quipped, a radiant smile beaming my way.
I can remember thinking to myself how quickly time seemed to be moving. In the blink of an eye most of the passengers were asleep and we were quickly approaching the notorious Bermuda Triangle. Then, the plane lurched westward, took a deep dive about one thousand feet and I scanned the outside of my plane, searching for some cause. I recovered and found my bearings as Brenner invaded the cockpit once more.
"Shut up!' I barked before he could say a word.
"Just some turbulence, we're above water," I explained.
"Uhm well, there's a bit of a problem." Brenner stammered.
Although we hadn't gotten along pleasantly before now, I took his tone and demeanor seriously. Something was up. Once again, the aircraft took a heart pounding dip.
"Spit it out damnit!" I yelled.
Maggie looked from Brenner back to me and I could see the horror etched into her face. Her slender hand came up to cover her mouth, that universal sign of shock and trepidation.
Brenner began, "Our specimen is awake." He paused before continuing. "And angry.", he finished.
"So get it back to sleep, calm him down, that creature's gonna put us at the bottom of the Atlantic!"
Of course there were marine biologists on board who could sort this thing out. I figured there'd be tranquilizers, restraints, maybe a soft ballad to soothe the disturbed monster. But alas, the team's supply of heavy sleep-inducing narcotics were smashed, their glass vials shattered just as the squid's supposedly "safe-tested" enclosure had. Now there was a veritable ocean, ten thousand cubic meters of South Pacific salt water squelching, sloshing freely in my airplanes lower hold.
I feel at this point in the story it would be prudent to elaborate on the unique design of my custom C130. This wasn't just any old transport plane. The wingspan was fifty yards across, imagine half a football field! The body was about as wide as 3 school buses. Unlike the Airbus and popular passenger plane, the Boeing 787, my aircraft didn't utilize the latest lightweight alluminums and poly-carbons. Good, old fashioned American steel and a kevlar coating was necessary. At the base it was nicknamed 'the battleship' and onlookers, no matter how many times they'd seen it airborne, were truly dazzled by its ability to fly. The gunmetal grey paintjob added to its naval mystique but its official mandate was secret and not necessarily commissioned by any of the branches of our military. The giant aircraft contained two levels, the upper being small, cramped, and exclusively for passengers and crew. There was a ramp that folded down and out at the back of the plane to accomodate Humvees, tanks, advanced weapons systems, or any other large loads. The cavernous cargo hold, or "belly of the beast", which held the giant squid was retrofitted specifically for the journey. Because of the large volume of salt water the squid needed to remain alive, a waterproof spray was applied to the walls, floor, and ceiling before the squid's humongous tank was secured within.
When I first took this assignment, my only hesitation was about the immense volume of water. Surely the plane would be more difficult to operate, and a thin margin for error made this endeavor a risky operation at best. Now, faced with the prospect of a writhing, tentacled, and angry squid, negotiating the craft was nothing short of suicidal. Something had to be done.
Then it hit me. While in Argentina I made a personal purchase. I met Juan Carlos in a saloon about half a mile from the tarmac. Procured by Juan Carlos were four hundered fifty, sixty milligram quaaludes, a bygone intoxicant completely unavailable stateside. The leather jacket I had hung on a hook behind my seat contained the pills. I knew from firsthand experience the sedative properties of the quaaludes, just five of these could knock an elephant unconscious quite easily. Certainly a dozen or so could act the same on the squid.
I clambered behind my seat, spilling my untouched coffee. As I grabbed for my jacket I relayed my plan to Brenner and Maggie. Amid shouts of protest I exited the cockpit and made my way to the hold. I prayed the short lesson I'd given Maggie had sunk in.
"Just keep us in the clouds!" I shouted.
I climbed down the staircase. Before I reached the floor my entire body was submerged. There was no sign of the researchers from Germany. Fluorescent running lights flickered above me creating an eerie sense of doom. I worried about electrocution but quickly stowed the thought away. Any fear now would paralyze me thus dooming the entire flight. Armed with the sedatives and a strong sense of valor, I plunged into the frigid depths.
Immediately I became disoriented as I was gripped round the waist by a tentacle and flung helter skelter around the hold. As the beast brought my writhing body toward its chomping beak-like jaws, I grabbed the only thing within arms reach - a crowbar. The intentions of the squid were clear, I was to be the dessert which followed the two scientists who woke the beast. As oxygen quickly left my bloodstream I lashed out, forcing the crowbar into the squids beak, jamming it open and force-feeding the quaaludes into its gullet. I felt the tension subside and the tentacle release me. I scurried to the surface, grabbed hold of the ladder, and took a huge gasp. I had done it. The immediate threat was over.
Now what were we to do about the loose water, unbalancing the plane every second, putting our lives in jeapordy. Soaking wet, I collapsed into the cockpit and resumed control of my airplane. I explained to Maggie and Hans the circumstances we found ourselves in.
We would have to dump the squid.
Hans turned white as a ghost. He had just released the two hundred thousand dollar payment to the fishing village. This mission was the culmination of over two years of field work and exploration. He put up a token resistance but he knew it had to be done. The lives of him and his crew were at stake.
I took the aircraft slowly and steadily down toward the waves of the Atlantic ocean. We became dangerously close to the surface when Maggie yelled,
"Stop, hold one minute!"
She tore down to the lower hold before I released the ramp and she secured a tracking device to the squids tentacle.
"We'll find him again Dr," she said soothingly, patting the scientist on the shoulder.
"We'll find him again." He repeated with conviction. They returned to Mack's cockpit with a new mission on the horizon.
