Wait what, how did Attack on Titain's narrative get accused of being interlocked with fascism?
I'm sorry I'm new to this since when did AoT ever visualize direct support of such a thing? I'm so so confused, it's a story COMBATTInG that exact thing??
I think a couple things, two of which I find sympathetic but still incorrect, and the rest of which--the main reasons--I find exasperating.
Main reason: people can't read well and don't understand framing. This is a very real phenomenon among younger generations (Z and below). If a story is about something, it's automatically seen as endorsing it. Just look at social media and the anti movement, or at problems plaguing YA literature and harassment towards authors.
In this kind of environment, where portrayal=endorsement, the concept of a tragic protagonist is especially anathema to people--if a protagonist does something, surely it's endorsed! Except, Shakespeare would like a word. Historically, this isn't the case in literature, and it's not the case in AoT either.
Now, to be fair, something coming out in a monthly fashion may mean that parts seem ambiguous at the time since we don't have teh full picture. However, I don't think AoT was ever ambiguous and never made me feel like it would endorse Eren, so while I can understand occasional confusion, I can't understand ever thinking it was even close to endorsing it especially after Mikasa's "that's already... unforgivable" line in 101.
The parts I am sympathetic to are these:
Isayama, in like 2013, posted an image of a Japanese military figure in WWII or something. I forget the details. This man is taught as a hero to Japanese students. To the rest of the world, he's uh, a war criminal. Isayama I believe deleted this? and at any rate never did it again. Still, I'm not going to defend this. I empathize with people who still live under the effects of brutal Japanese imperialist occupation, for which Japan still hasn't taken responsibility. Yet as someone who grew up in America in a cult where I had to unlearn basically everything, I'm also sympathetic to a man who was in his young-mid 20s who grew up with a perspective that was very different and appeared to learn from it. It's like a lot of Americans grow up hearing great things about Winston Churchill and George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, only to then realize in your 20s the Bad Things they did, like slavery and assault and more. Also, these things were not as widely available (via the internet) to people growing up at Isayama's age (he's just a little older than I am) as they are now. So I see this as a man learning. Yes, there's privilege there, but that's not something he can help, and it's a project to do the work unpacking it--which to all accounts he appears to actually be doing. It's nonsensical to assume that someone who ever speaks positively of a historical figure is actually endorsing their worldview. If the story did endorse it, that'd be different--but it doesn't.
The armbands. I have talked about it before and won't get into it, but I won't ever defend that use of the armband (it's incredibly insensitive) while also thinking that its use is not remotely an endorsement (framing-wise, it isn't) and also thinking that someone raised in Japan, again, doesn't learn nearly as much about the Holocaust as someone in the west does.
Even with those things, being angry about them or offended is one thing, and thinking the story endorses fascism as a result of it is another. I can defend why I called BNHA a fascist-esque story in the end tying it into the themes and messaging. I've yet to see someone do this with SnK because it's blatantly anti fascist--though, it is a story told within the foibles and limits of coming from one man's background.
Also, to quote @aspoonofsugar, I think the most blatant evidence it's anti-fascist is looking at who hated the ending. Answer: fascists. Young, alienated men angry that their hero, who was written to represent them, turned out not to be the hero of the story and as a tragic, hurting child throwing a tantrum. Raise your hand if you recognize any of our real-world fascists in that.
Edit: An Anon gave the details for the picture of the Japanese imperialist: From Tv Tropes; Dot Pixis's character stirred an outrage among the Korean fanbase, especially when Isayama admitted that he was based off of Akiyama Yoshifuru, a historical general of the Imperial Japanese Army who has a complicated and controversial history in Korea. This resulted in a heated debate over the general's war record, angry messages and even death threats towards Isayama, as well as an overall decline of interest in the series in Korea due to what they saw as Isayama glorifying the man.
Thanks to Anon for the details; I'd forgotten. My opinion on it remains the same.

You sometimes use the expression "snk levels of meltdown" and now you said that Isayama dealt with shit so I wanted to ask.
¿What happened in the snk fandom?
(Since I started reading the manga 2 hours ago)
HA
Okay so..
TL;DR:
The ending to SNK upset a lot of people and it caused wide spread WILD reactions posted to the internet. WILD is the nicest way I can put it lol. Like you'd think these people just watched their mom get shot or something, god it was weird and insane. Most of the insanity I saw was from reddit which I can't say is surprising. Fandom there is absolutely rancid. But twitter and tumblr were flooded with it too.
There's some fandom-wide effort put into some fix-it fic called Ao no Requiem I think? I call them the ANR crowd, but those are the people I'm talking about lol. Just..wild shit.
Recently Isayama attended some convention in NYC and some of the comments he made that people on twitter were translating genuinely made me very sad, because a lot of was just that he was incredibly nervous and asking the fans to be kind to him, and that he was relieved by the positivity he got from the crowd. I mean...jesus. To have one of the most successful mangas in the world and feel that way says a lot.
I honestly think extents go further than what I'm describing but I don't feel like researching right now, so I won't make any bold claims beyond what I personally witnessed on my own phone screen lmao.
I wanna say since you're reading it that--it's an amazing story and don't let this shit scare you away. I'll let you know it's nothing like bnha, naruto, FMA, whatever popular shonen you can think of, it's not like that. SNK isn't a traditional shonen and it doesn't follow standard tropes, so just keep that in mind as you read it. The ending is fine. The manga ends in the most satisfying way it could have possibly ended imo.
But yeah when I say "snk levels" of meltdown I mean absolutely wild visceral reactions to a damn manga and like harassing people online who LIKE the ending, sending aggressive messages to peoples' inboxes. It was not a normal "man that ending sucked" reaction, it was a very strong reaction lol. That's what I mean.

muse info, important information, and rules below.
quick info about the muse (tw for mentions of familial/child abuse + child injury):
this is a blog for the original greymon that taichi and hikari raised as children in the original adventure series + the digimon movie. her name is officially "koromon," koro for short.
in the events of the original encounter, koro had lost her memories of her original tamer until she was a greymon.
koro's original tamer was a young girl named lily, who was raised in an abusive household. the reason why koro grew so big as an agumon and greymon as opposed to taichi's greymon, was purely due to holding an inherent need to protect her tamer.
when living with lily, koro was kept secret and lived in an apartment with her as a koromon. she was to be seen as a stuffed animal.
however, as abuse grew worse, this triggered digivolution in koro, who eventually became greymon. however, due to living in an apartment, this caused the apartment building to collapse on itself due to being unable to support koro's weight. this resulted in her tamer and koro becoming severely injured, and thus, koro returned to the digital world as a digiegg (to be discovered by hikari and taichi later, with no memory of the incident until she once again became a greymon).
koro behaves much differently to taichi's agumon. she is territorial and aggressive, and viciously protective of those she loves. she is hardly upbeat, often succumbing to episodes of deep depression, grieving, and anger.
she also does not naturally digivolve into metalgreymon or wargreymon, due to the state of her tamer being unable to support digivolution. if she's able to digivolve at all (which is very rare) she becomes skulgreymon.

Come one come all, the Credits Theaters has opened its doors to, once again, celebrate 200 followers with an event of a lifetime! Grab your tickets and please, enjoy the show!
navigation
Tumblr media
How it works
✻ You as our audience will pick an arc from the 4 shows I write for, which are JJK, MHA, Haikyuu, and AOT
✻ Afterward, pick a character you want me to write for with the arc, it can either be people who are in the arc or not in the arc
✻ Example: Sports festival arc from MHA with Fatgum, then I will write the reader's experience with Fatgum at the sports festival (whether it's a younger version of him doing the sports festival or both of you watching 1A's sports festival together or the like)
✻ Another choice is if you gave me an arc and then tell me what you want to be changed from it then I shall write it
✻ Example: Shiratorizawa vs Karasuno if Shiratorizawa won (if you watch Marvel basically like the What If show on Disney+ rn)
Tumblr media
Rules
✻ Adding from my list of rules, there aren't many extra rules but there are SOME
✻ You can't request anything cross anime, something like All Might in the Shibuya Arc (JJK)
✻ Also if you're requesting an arc within the manga, beware of manga spoilers that I might add, so please be caught up with the manga of the anime you're requesting
✻ Except for AOT and Haikyuu, I will not be accepting arcs from the manga from AOT and Haikyuu for this event (cause I'm not caught up yet lmao)
✻ By the way, you can request someone who's dead lol
✻ Refer to my character list for characters I'll write
✻ I will basically write any of the arcs that exist or events if you want to be more specific, but there are a few I will not write, that list is below the cut
Tumblr media
JJK Arcs
anything after the Shibuya incident I won't write
Haikyuu Arcs
anything after Tsuki, Hinata, and Kageyama trained outside of Karasuno I won't write
BNHA Arcs
anything after the Paranormal Army Liberation Front War I won't write
AOT arcs:
anything after the anime I won't write

How can I discern the themes of a story? I've been trying story analysis since coming across your blog, because I found it very fascinating how you could predict things I never saw coming. I think I've got better at it but I still miss so much, then I hear someone else point it out and my brain goes of course! How could I possibly not make that connection? I think it's mainly because I can't reach the themes.
Hi! Good question! (And funny you should ask because I legit JUST wrote an article about this for my day job, like, two days ago.)
Honestly, themes are just like... the main ideas of a story. They are ideas the writer wants you to think about. It's not necessarily the same things as a moral message. It can be a moral message. But it can also be a question in more complex works. And the longer a work is, the more likely it is to have multiple themes, too!
A question theme doesn't always have an answer, either. For example, one of Lord of the Rings' themes is that it asks us how we can recover from a lot of hardship. The answer's different for every character. Sam marries and has a dozen kids. Frodo leaves Middle-earth.
If you're not sure what the theme is, here are some ideas to jump-start your thoughts!
Questions To Ask Yourself:
What do you like about the story? It's probably not just set design! What appeals to you about the characters, or what pisses you off? If you talk about stories with other people, what do you talk about?
Questions To Ask (About) The Characters:
What do the characters want/what's their goal? What do they say they want? What obstacles stand in the way of getting what they want? Here's an example of me breaking this down in HxH.
A hint: in more mature works, a common obstacle is some part of the character themselves, the human heart at war with itself. (For example, in Attack on Titan, Eren wants to save the world. He also wants to be strong on his own, and he's not actually all that strong. To save the world, then, he'll need other people... but that makes him feel weak.)
Questions To Ask About The World-Building:
Yes, world-building is very relevant. Think of A Song of Ice and Fire. In the story, if characters make mistakes, they tend to die for them--even if they're right. It literally opens in the first chapter with a man seeing the Others, telling our protagonist that he saw them, and getting executed for it. He's right, but he still dies for it. Thus, you can expect consequences along the same lines for the rest of the story--ASOIAF, SnK, etc. are not forgiving worlds. The characters who mess up, no matter how well-intentioned, are probably doomed. In a fairy tale or superhero story, like RWBY or BNHA, there's a lot more room for a character to survive.
This pattern of actions-consequences will tell you the genre, which will help you with expectations! (Genre can be very relevant for tragedies, deconstructions, etc.)
So, ask yourself: if a character dies, but he's right, then should he have done what he did? Does the author think this is bad? (Often, no!) Why does an author punish rightness with death? Is it an indictment of the character or the world? Is death a punishment at all in this story?
Questions To Ask About Framing:
Framing just tells us how to view certain events. For example, Ned Stark dies in ASOIAF, right? But did he do anything wrong? Or is it rather that the world is messed up? Some combination?
Ned does mess up. But, he also acts in a kind way that we don't see literally any other character acting with. He's concerned for innocent children, even those conceived from incest, which is very much not how the rest of the world treats kids in the story (think of how the story again opens with a child being attempted-murdered). So, he's not framed as a bad guy we should be pleased gets put down.
So, ask yourself: why did he die, then? What does this tell me about the world? About the characters? What about one similar event is different from this similar event?
Questions To Ask About The Writing:
What do the characters keep repeating throughout the story?
MHA: "I want to save people!" "I want to be a hero!" Conclusion: heroes save people.
SnK: "The world is cruel, but the world is also beautiful."
The Witcher: "destiny." (The story explores what destiny is.)
Tokyo Ghoul: "live, even if it's not stylish."
If it's repeated, that means the author wants you to think about this idea. Which means it's probs a theme.

I have been lurking in the bnha fandom for roughly a month and I gotta ask... was there some kind of "brain drain" in the fandom where almost everyone with critical thinking skills left? Almost everything I see are surface level or just bad takes. It's frustrating because imho the story is not complicated. It just assumes the audience (children) can think about what they read. I know the answer is curate the fandom but it's wild how the vast majority of the fandom fails at reading comprehension.
Oh lord....like you're just now into the series or you're just now exploring what people have to say about it? I'm curious (◉ˍ◉)
Anyway, uhhhh--I think it's really a matter of opinion MOST of the time when it comes to who has the right take and who doesn't.
The only takes that I look at and think "yeah you put 0 effort into this thought" are the ones where it's just "The villains should go to jail cuz they're bad". I mean, you can't argue with a take like that. There's no thought into it. It's just "this is how it is in our world so that's how it is in bnha". No room for discussion. So I write those takes off as severely lacking in critical thinking--simply because there is no thinking involved at all.
The story itself isn't very complicated as a whole--but there ARE complicated things in it, but for the most part I don't think it was built in such a way that should have resulted in some of the most asinine takes. The League was written to be sympathetic because that's what the author wants you to feel for them--murder and all. Maybe it's because I've avoided seriously fandom-ing until this series, but I'm honestly unsure as to why such visceral hatred for the villains and the clearly foreshadowed saving and redemptions for them exists.
It really confuses me. If people don't like certain characters then that's one thing--but to hate certain characters just because of their definition (antagonist) and want so badly for the fans of said characters to be disappointed by canon is just...fucking weird. The only other fandom I've seen get this ugly--if not worse--is Attack on Titan. I've heard horror stories of other fandoms but my personal experience and what I saw first hand is mostly tied to SNK and BNHA.
So I mean, idk. I think the idea that everyone just "lacks critical thinking" is mostly just people really seriously hating certain characters and for some reason, caring about what happens to said characters. I can't think of any character I hate (as in literally hate) that I also pay attention to and want a certain ending for. I don't have any characters like that. If I really hate a character then I simply don't care what happens. That's how I know I dislike a character--I just don't care what happens.
Idk, that's what I see.
