We know how frustrating it may feel to not be able to connect your vehicle to a software that allows you to use your iPhone’s apps, maps, and music from the iDrive screen itself. With that in mind, we decided to help you get to the bottom of the issue and have it fixed… so you can get your X3 connected to CarPlay and enjoy a great driving experience.

Apple CarPlay In a Nutshell

Apple introduced CarPlay in 2014 with the aim of enabling users to integrate their iPhones with their vehicle’s infotainment system. This revolutionary technology made it easier and safer for drivers to interact with their phones when driving. By mirroring the iPhone’s screen on the infotainment system, CarPlay made it possible for users to access a wide range of apps… including navigational tools, streaming services, and messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Skype, all from the dashboard screen.

Here's What Might Be Preventing Your BMW From Connecting to CarPlay

#1- Compatibility issue

What iPhone model do you own? If it’s an iPhone 4s or an earlier model, you won’t be able to link your phone to your BMW X3 using CarPlay. At the end of the day, it’s all about software-hardware compatibility. Not just the model, the version of iOS you’re using can also affect whether you’ll be able to link your iPhone to your vehicle. Just so you know, CarPlay requires an iOS 7.1 or later version to function correctly.

#2- Outdated software on BMW X3

You won’t be able to pair your iPhone with your BMW X3 through CarPlay if your iDrive has an operating system earlier than version 6.0. The iDrive 6.0 version, which was introduced around 2017, only supports wired Apple CarPlay… whereas the 7.0 or later version supports both wired and wireless CarPlay. To be able to use CarPlay on your BMW X3, you should consider updating your BMW’s iDrive system to the latest version.

#3- Incorrect CarPlay Settings on iPhone

This is yet another obvious reason why you might not be able to connect to Apple CarPlay. If you don’t configure your iPhone as per the requirements, your vehicle won’t be able to recognize the phone as a valid CarPlay device. Listed below are a few things that you can do to establish a seamless connection;

- Allow CarPlay with lock screen.

- Configure the Bluetooth and USB connections… for an easy integration with CarPlay.

- Adjust the settings to ensure that the CarPlay service doesn’t get disrupted when ‘Do Not Disturb Mode’ is activated.

#4- Disabled CarPlay Settings in BMW X3

You won’t be able to use CarPlay in your BMW X3 if its iDrive settings are not configured the right way. So, adjusts the settings to enable Apple CarPlay to execute certain functions like navigation, music streaming, and hands-free communication.

So, What's The Fix?

#1- Check your iPhone’s compatibility

This is the very first thing that you need to do if you’re having a hard time connecting to Apple CarPlay on your BMW X3. You might need to update your iOS version to be able to use this service.

#2- Forget and Re-pair

More often than not… forgetting the connection and starting fresh fixes any pairing issue with Apple CarPlay. It’s quite an easy thing to do… Open ‘Settings’ on your BMW X3 iDrive and click on ‘Connections’. Click on ‘Apple CarPlay’ and choose to forget the device. Do the same with your iPhone. Try to re-establish the connection.

#3- Reset both devices

If the issue persists despite your repeated attempts to pair your BMW X3 with your iPhone using Apple CarPlay, try resetting both devices. This may fix any error that might be causing the connection issue.

#4- Call in professionals

If there is no hardware-software compatibility issue… and yet you’re struggling to pair your vehicle with Apple CarPlay, it’s time to visit the nearest service center to have the issue checked by certified professionals.
