In order to prevent contamination of the engine, dust and other foreign substances are filtered out of the air by the air filter. This filter can clog over time due to the build-up of impurities. And, yes... a dirty air filter may interfere with air flow to the combustion chamber; as a result of which a car's engine can run rough and shiver - especially when idling.
Faulty oxygen sensor
Located in the exhaust system, the oxygen or lambda sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust emissions. This helps the engine management computer to adjust the air-to-fuel ratio within the combustion chamber. Long story short, the oxygen sensor plays a crucial role in enhancing engine efficiency.
But, it has a downside; a minor problem with the oxygen sensor can result in serious engine problems in a car. For example, problems with the oxygen sensor can cause the engine to misfire, backfire, and stall. Also, if there is a problem with the oxygen sensor, your car will vibrate when idling.
Damaged motor mounts
Broken motor mounts can cause many problems in a vehicle. The most common one is the emergence of a shaking sensation from the engine compartment when the vehicle is idling. Motor mounts are nothing but small parts made of rubber and metal. They essentially hold the engine in place and absorb the vibrations it generates. So, it's obvious… your car will shake if some of the mounts malfunction.

The power loss from cars is such a problem that should not to be taken lightly. A car needs power to propel itself and move. It needs a definite amount of power to move with speed and take loads. Reasons behind the power loss while accelerating of BMW
In BMW cars, more power will be lost if they do not get attention to have a regular maintenance and care. Issues during acceleration has become one of the common things in BMW which happen due to low power output in engine. If such issue is not fixed in time, then the engine would continuously loose power and then goes to limp mode. So you need to know what causes the BMW to have a very low power output which would help you to get your car fixed. Basically, in BMW, power loss during acceleration occurs due to problems in the mechanical components, sensors and some actuators.
Cylinder compression is low
The fuel gets into the cylinder where it is compressed. The compression helps in proper burning of the fuel mixture and generate more power. If the proper compression is not there then the combustion would be very bad which would lead to very low power production, the car would lose power while accelerating.
Clogged exhaust system
The exhaust system makes the combustion byproducts from the engine to go out of the car. It also prevents the sound and the air pollution by the help of two components - catalytic converter and a muffler. These two components are most likely to get clogged. When the catalytic converter get clogged, then the flow of exhaust gasses would be restricted and the engine would not be able to take fresh air. So the proper combustion would not be possible if the engine would not breathe in air, which would lead to low power.
Clogged air filter
Air filter is a part of air intake system through which, air gets into car. The air filter makes the air clean by trapping dirt and dust in air. So with time, the filter gets clogged with these dirt and dust particles and the passage of air is blocked. If no air would get into engine, then how will the engine burn the fuel with the absence of air?
Dirty fuel filter
Just like air filter, the fuel filter cleans the fuel and traps the impurities in it as a result, the filter becomes very dirty and such dirty filters have very less area for allowing the flow of fuel to the engine. The rate of flow of fuel would become very low and hence the amount of fuel in the engine would fall. Such low fuel would produce low power too. If the filter I s dirty, then the dirt may escape into the engine and cause damage.
Malfunctioning O2 sensors
The O2 sensors monitor the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust gas to know if the engine is running properly or it is running rich or lean. Then it sends the information to the engine control module to adjust the amount of air and fuel if required. If the O2 sensor is faulty, then it would not be able to do its work properly, give wrong values to the ECM which would lead to wrong ratio of air and fuel in the combustion chamber.
Faulty camshaft position sensor
These sensors affect the timing of the fuel injection and the combustion. It reads the speed of the camshaft and gives the information about the position of the camshaft to the ECM. If the sensor is faulty, then the engine timing would be badly affected, the combustion process would not happen properly, leading to low power.
There are also some other causes like bad spark plugs, faulty fuel pump, etc which can cause the problem in BMW. You have to inspect these actuators after inspection of sensors and filters.

The design goal for Dinan’s High-Flow Cold Air Intake System was very specific: ensure that the powerful E39 M5 engine has plenty of cool oxygen-rich air to breathe in for optimal performance under various driving conditions. This intake system replaces the BMW’s stock air boxes with proprietary twin high-flow air filters that feed large-diameter intake plumbing, carefully designed to minimize turbulence for maximum airflow benefit.
The filters are relocated outside of the engine compartment behind the front bumper and below the headlights. This is strategic so that it insulates the intake from the car’s high underhood temperatures. Additional heat shields are integrated to block the flow of power-robbing air that passes over the radiator. The Dinan Cold Air Intake System for the BMW M5 also includes modified fog light trim rings for a ram air effect at speed.
The ongoing development of Dinan’s cold air intake system revealed an interesting and noteworthy discovery. Through rigorous testing, it was determined that the stock location of the air temperature sensor within the Air Mass Meter was providing the engine management system with an artificially high reading, resulting in reduced power output. The culprit? Heat soaking. This was happening when adequate airflow was not passing over the Air Mass Meter like in stop-and-go traffic. Such instances were provided a reading that was much higher than the actual temperature of the air entering the car’s intake system.
The BMW M5’s sophisticated engine management system would then automatically back off timing as a result, reducing available power until airflow cools down the Air Mass Meter. To avoid these issues, Dinan’s cold air intake system includes an air temperature sensor relocation kit to give your car’s engine management system a more accurate reading and consistent performance no matter the driving conditions.
The newest iteration of Dinan’s cold air intake system goes back to its carbon fiber roots for a more showroom-worthy appearance. It also comes complete with an embossed Dinan logo instead of the inset Mylar decals that were prone to marring after decades of use.
