Max, did you watch the new Babymonster MV? They debuted with 'Batter Up'. I know you used to like YG groups but hated Blackpink,so what did you think??

Oh I had no idea and just watched it because of your ask.

Firstly, I want to say that I don't hate Blackpink. I disagreed and hated how their management handled them but I don't hate the group. It's true that they coasted on their looks for years but I mean, in hindsight, they are an extraordinarily visual group and I truly do not think there is another group out there where every single member could be considered on the same level.

Okay. Onto Babymonster. Well. Great Gowns Beautiful Gowns. I think they are well trained and perform well. They obviously sing and rap well. The music video looks very slick and expensive in the editing and lighting. Two of them emoted some emotions so good on them for that.

But. The song is terrible. It did not 'declare' or 'announce' them or their intentions in ANY way. It's not even a catchy recycled Park Theodore and Rebekah Boom special. It's not even WTF! like NMIXX. It's not even cloying like Aespa. It's all just very formulaic and calculated, even down to the BRRRR-rapline like Lisa in Boombaya, except that none of these girls have anything close to Lisa's debut charisma and presence.

YG can't do anything remotely 'out the box'. Blackpink was a 2NE1 Remix and Babymonster look like a BP cosplay. You can even tell who the Rose/Jisoo/Jennie and Lisas of the group are. It's like they all went to Blackpink school and copied all the mannerisms, down to the scowl and smirk. I can't believe they are making me appreciate NMIXX and Aespa.....

The competition is crazy right now in GG-land but I don't think New Jeans and IVE have anything to worry about.
