drowning in ruffles over here (and not complaining about it)
these are all made from gored pieces so they have a lot more volume than traditional ruffles, which are usually made from rectangular pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after these are sewn together I turned the bottom edge inward and trimmed very close to the stitching.
Tumblr media
they are hemmed using a rolled hemming foot.
Tumblr media
after gathering most of the ruffles (I think 16 of the 20ish?) are made of four pieces that taper from 1" at one end to 5" at the other, and are 14" long.
Tumblr media
the body was assembled from the same material as the ruffles, though it is backed with muslin since the ruffle fabric is a very very flimsy gauze.

ruffles were sewn on, then trim was added, then I fussed around a loooot to get them more symmetrical (and I still have more to do)

the sleeves feature more ruffles, of course, and I might add another to the front (see above). there will be a lot of tacking involved at some point and steaming which will hopefully make it look a bit more orderly lol.

Blouse
c. 1890
“This bodice is made of silk taffeta and has black velvet trim throughout. It has a standing collar and a white lace jabot. There are tucks on the front and back and it is boned. This bodice has a basque waist and narrow sleeves. Features that are indicative of the late nineteenth century are the boning, the basque waist, and the standing collar.”
