Coffee & Donuts
Summary: Arthur’s thrilled to be part of a crowd. Though the evening doesn’t go perfectly, Y/N’s flirtations make it sweet.
Warnings: Smut
Words: 4,602
A/N: Alright. After the heart wrenching angst of my last piece (which I love, by the way; don't get me wrong! 😂), I had to write another story in which Arthur and Y/N are happy and together. It's inspired by one of Arthur's visions during their kiss. I hope you all like it! Special thanks to @jokerownsmysoul for beta-ing!
If you have any thoughts or questions, please comment, feel free to message me, or send me an ask. Requests for Arthur and WWH are open!

Parties and celebrations weren't foreign to Arthur. He'd worked plenty, enough to make him realize what he'd been missing out on. He was well-versed in pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs, and balloon animals. But as an adult, those activities didn't satisfy. He wanted to be included rather than paid. Connect with people, introduce himself. Discuss his experiences and pursuits. Feel sufficiently at ease to loosen up a little and have a good time.
Now he was a guest - a certified guest - at Patricia Gorman's fifty-sixth birthday party. The first party he'd been invited to since being the weird kid in class who'd rotated between three worn out sweaters and could never afford a gift.
He'd been a tad apprehensive about going to Burnside. Gotham's nicest borough had a reputation for high rents and low tolerance. When Y/N and he had entered 2E, however, Patricia's greeting ("You made it!") and the apartment were thoroughly welcoming. Crocodile brown walls and forest green shag carpet made the spacious living room a cozy hideaway. Marigolds leapt across the polyester of the T-cushion sofa and its easy-chair companion. The floor lamp's amber, crimped glass shades cast the spacious living room in a glow borrowed from warm autumn days.
Patricia's husband, Robert, was out on an emergency call. An HVAC had gone haywire in a residential building in Hinckley. Her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson had been by for lunch. That meant the only other guests were Matt - Y/N's old boss - and a bottle-blonde in a black halter dress and spike heels, who Y/N introduced as Laura. ("She's Matt's ex-wife," Y/N later disclosed. "He's been trying to win her back since I moved to Gotham.") Both shook Arthur's hand when he offered it, and he felt a little thrill whirl his stomach when Y/N laid claim to him by telling the woman, "This is my husband."
A collection of appetizers served as dinner, a fun and novel menu. The slow cooker meatballs Y/N and he had lugged over on the subway were a bit tangy; he still couldn't believe the recipe called for grape jelly. The deviled eggs with paprika, a pleasant mix of savory and sweet, was a dish he'd heard about on television. Cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches were light and airy, a good match for his iced tea. Only the artichoke and spinach dip gave him pause. Its beans and hot sauce made his taste buds wince.
That unpleasant flavor was quickly forgotten when Y/N pulled him to sit next to her on the sofa, so Patricia could open her presents. She proudly showed off the orange, clay ashtray her grandson had made for her. Arthur, having successfully kept the secret of her light smoking from Y/N, chuckled at Patricia fibbing she'd put candy in it. She thanked Matt and Laura for the champagne, wrapped in a silver bow with a simple "Happy Birthday" tag. The bottle wasn't popped. Upon peeking into the large giftbag Y/N placed on her lap, she made a soft sound. The Dazey whirlpool bath, which attached to the side of the tub and had three strength settings, was a hit. She announced her plans to try it in the morning. The dark blue Rexbuilt briefbag was intended to replace her cracked, leather briefcase, Y/N explained. Patricia ran her fingertips along the expanding inner compartments, the personalized planner that included the credential "CLA" after her name, and flipped through the included steno pads, eyes brimming.
She sipped at her cocktail and put an arm around Y/N. Melancholy tinged Patricia's voice. "At my age, the people in your life tend to stay the people in your life. Whether you like them or not." She reached further and patted Arthur's knee. "I'm glad an old dame like me gets to call you all friends." His throat clenched in gratification, though he wasn't daring enough to squeeze her hand and thank her for deciding he was a friend.
Still on top of the world an hour later, Arthur sauntered to the red and white enamel dining table to serve himself a second slice of upside-down pineapple cake. The evening had gone well, better than a guy with a natural inability to mingle could've expected. He bobbed his head to the beat of "Come Fly with Me." It was a happy coincidence that Patricia's taste in music aligned with his. She'd regaled him with tales of seeing Sinatra and Count Basie on her and Robert's honeymoon in Vegas. Arthur took a bite absentmindedly, wondering how long it would take for him to save the money to surprise Y/N with plane and concert tickets.
The daydreaming didn't last long. Matt's plodding footsteps preceded him, followed by a long sigh as he propped himself on the beige stone of the dining area's accent wall, across from the u-shaped kitchen. He held out a Budweiser and smirked. "Marriage is a hell of a lot of work."
Pleased that he was being treated like one of the guys, like a regular husband with a regular relationship who got to speak about his regular wife, Arthur accepted the beer and considered the comment. Matt's sentiment was hard to grasp. Dr. Sally had said marriage could be difficult, and Y/N's first hadn't survived the ripples of her life. But it didn't feel like work with her. Their arguments were minor. Her nagging him to find a primary doctor for annual check-ups, even though he'd survived this long without one. Or back in Missouri, when he'd told her to stop shielding him and trust he could take anything she had to give.
Arthur adopted a similar nonchalant posture and jutted his hip against the table's edge. "I like it. It's easy to take good care of her." He wasn't able to completely erase the smugness of success from his tone.
"You're what? Two years in with the most headstrong woman in Gotham? She's great and all, but she spikes my blood pressure." Matt slapped Arthur's back and let out a hearty guffaw. "Give it five more and you'll be in my office trying to avoid alimony."
"Don't. Say that." Arthur crinkled the can in his grip and glared up at him.
"Hey," Matt started, withdrawing even as he tried diplomacy. "It was just a joke. I didn't mean anything by it."
Flinching, pulling at the cuffs of his red sweater, Arthur fought the surge of anger in his veins. It wouldn't do to lose control and cause a scene. Of course Matt's comment about them splitting up was supposed to be a joke. But Arthur didn't find it one bit funny. Even with his complete faith in her and his firm belief that they were meant to be together, the possibility that she'd stop wanting him hurt. It didn't occur to him that the implication of the punchline could be that he'd get sick of Y/N.
With a muttered apology, Matt walked to the others in the kitchen. Arthur glanced over to see her laugh tipsily, until she grabbed her stomach and swatted Patricia's shoulder, a stark demonstration of how much he and Y/N differed. She always knew how to respond to people, the right comebacks. Appropriate timing and levels of interaction. It seemed she was in her natural element, the loveliest swan on a lake. Whereas after years of therapy and practice with her, he was still a fish out of water, flopping around on the shoreline in hopes some stranger would take pity on him and throw him back into the sea.
Maybe that was the real punchline. Eventually their contrasts would no longer complement each other and instead become a chore.
Scowling, he ambled towards the record player stationed before two double-hung windows. Increased the volume to drown out the intrusive notions. It didn't really work. He settled on a grounding technique he'd practiced, all the while lamenting that he couldn't handle a party without needing it. His attention went to the spinning LP, the needle following its grooves. The bright blue album cover, where Ol' Blue Eyes beckoned him, the scuff marks on the cardboard's corner edges. He acknowledged the spider plants sat on the windowsill, worried a papery leaf until it broke off. He stared out the window, taking in the whole of the city. Pinpricks of light dazzling in the darkness.
"Gotham's beautiful at night," Y/N said from behind him. He glanced over his shoulder to watch her approach. Her cheeks glowed with alcohol and good cheer, the collar of her ivory blouse unbuttoned. "There's a life behind every light out there. Ten million of them. Here. Try this." She offered her hurricane glass, filled with an off-white slush.
He sipped the pina colada with cautious skepticism and grimaced as soon as it hit his tongue. The blend of pineapple and coconut tasted of cheap sunscreen and tropical imitations, the kind advertised in smudged brochures for bad cruises to islands with made up sounding names. "No, thanks."
Snorting, she shrugged and embraced his back at the waist. "How are we doing?" she asked, curling into his side. After a few seconds, she prodded him. "Had your fill of Matt?"
"He was just joking." Arthur rubbed the back of his neck and sighed.  She set the drink next to the record player and brought her hand to his, trailed it over the inside of his wrist, up his forearm. She pecked his chin and nudged him until he turned to her. As soon as their gazes met, the concern in hers told him she'd continue to pepper him with questions. But he wasn't about to let his misplaced doubts spoil her evening. And he knew the perfect way to distract them both.
A new song started. An oldie that sang of Jupiter and Mars, playfulness among the stars. He cupped her cheek, thumb sweeping the corner of her mouth. "Dance with me," he said. Before accepting his proffered palm, she laid a sloppy kiss on him. With a flutter of her eyelashes, she grinned, and his smile grew to match her own. As he held her side, led her in a slow, swaying circle, he marveled at her. At her ability to soothe every molecule, every lingering ache. Self-assurance welled in him, chased away his earlier dejection. He cradled her to his lanky frame, trembled and felt himself blush. She was the only woman for him. That was as certain as his cigarette habit.
Despite Patricia's reassurances she was fine, that Robert working late wasn't unusual, Y/N insisted on staying until he got home. Though Arthur would have preferred they take their leave an hour earlier, being allowed to smoke inside blunted his grumbling. The disarming flirtations she bestowed on him also didn't hurt. She'd pour herself a drink (four in total, if he counted correctly), help Patricia make a plate of leftovers for her husband, then throw him a wink. Whisper and cackle while cleaning, then kiss his temple.
Around midnight, Patricia put her foot down. Ushered them out with a promise to call and a hug fierce enough to crush his ribs. She raised a brow at Y/N's unsteady gait, grasped Arthur's arm, and said with a wry, tired smile, "Make sure you put that woman straight to bed." His dark brows shot up and held. Had she intended a pun? Or had Y/N's spare caresses caused the interpretation? Either way, he liked being trusted to take care of her. And the hint of arousal that flared in his belly.
By the time they stumbled into their apartment, that arousal had reduced to a dull exhaustion. She kicked off her heels on the way to the bathroom, calling a slurred "night!" as she closed the door. Yawning, he put dish soap and hot water in the crockpot, scrubbed burned bits of sauce from its rim, turned it upside down on a towel to dry. Once he'd brushed his teeth for one minute rather than the recommended two, he tossed his sweater, trousers, briefs, and socks in the hamper, and went to the bedroom. He found his blue pajamas in their usual spot, the chair in the corner, and slid them up his skinny but toned legs. Tucked in next to her, he was carried to sleep on waves of fatigue and her quiet, wet snoring.
~~~~~
A tickle threatened to rouse him. Whispers along the waistband of his bottoms. Heat snuggled his back. Delightfully drowsy, he cuddled deeper into cozy, cream-color sheets, already returning to a pleasant, dreamless slumber. But a rumble of exhaust, likely from a bus that needed a new muffler, dragged him to consciousness. Arthur grumbled and tucked his arm under his pillow, not ready to transition to a world of overcrowding and concrete, commotion and bad jokes.
Yet, Y/N's insistent grazes continued, luring him with promises of placid pleasure. Her toes wiggled at his heel until he made space for her to slip her foot between his ankles. The corner of his mouth quirked. He was reminded of last night's playfulness, her endless teasing. The way he'd held the crockpot as a shield to fend off her advances on the train home, her forwardness to the point that he would've preferred having a laminated card to present on her behalf. Forgive my wife: she has a condition. It causes frequent and uncontrollable displays of affection.
Nimble fingers edged lower, loosened the tie of his pajamas before dipping beneath the loose elastic to lace through his dark brown curls, darker than the chestnut hair on his head. Her knuckles ran over him, lazy caresses full of intent. Up and down, up and down. Delicate. Deliberate. The blood racing to his groin, the pleasant swelling, made his abdomen twitch. Soon full and heavy, the sensitive tip straining the cotton seams, he pressed his lips together. When she skimmed the tender skin resting on his inner thigh, he flexed the muscle at the base of his erection. It bobbed and hit her wrist and she let loose a girlish giggle, more intoxicating than wine.
With her left leg draped over him at the knee, she undulated against his rear. Plush lips brushed the boney knobs of his spine, damp breath fanned the nape of his neck, labored, needy. Pebbled nipples grazed his back through the thin nylon of her nightgown, taunting and compelling. He made up his mind to throw an arm around her, to yank her on top of him. To eagerly take part in her seduction.
But she withdrew from his bottoms to palm his stomach and plant a gentle kiss to the shell of his ear, whispering, "Sleep tight." The mattress shifted and she rolled away from him. He furrowed his brows. She rarely relented this easily - other times he'd awakened, hard and aching, enveloped by the captivating wetness of her mouth. What was she up to?
Covers rustled. Her calf bumped his. And the opposite of what he'd assumed occurred. Instead of light footfalls leading out of the room, there was silence, silence that seemed to stretch on and on...
Until a hitched gasp gave her away.
Touching herself. She was touching herself. She'd just been all over him, acted like he was some sort of model on the cover of Vue magazine, and now she was touching herself. Right beside him! Ecstatic to have inspired such brazenness, he grinned and fisted the pillow. Her fleeting, stifled moans tangled him in knots, implored him to give her what they both burned for.
He flipped in her direction, his hand shooting under the sheet to grab hers. "Gotcha."
Eyes wide, she gaped at him in surprise. But adoration softened her expression as she entwined their fingers. "How long have you been awake?" she asked.
"Long enough."
He stretched to rewind the shades, the diaphanous curtains staying in place. Sunlight diffused over them, wrapped around her face, lent her disheveled hair a warm luster. He twirled a feathered lock and pecked her eyelids. "Finishing what you started on the subway, hm?"
"Me?" Y/N brought his knuckles to her mouth.  "You're the one who came to bed without any underwear."
"Well, it was a late night." The pad of his thumb tugged at her bottom lip to reveal the pink tip of her tongue. He bent to claim it. "I was lucky to find my pajamas."
Chuckling, she broke their connection. "Did you have a good time?"
"Yeah. The cake was good. And the music. Everyone was nice."
"Patricia loved having you there. She thought you were very sweet." A pause as she mapped a dimple. "Matt said he'd upset you. Something stupid about breaking up?"
Vague shadows of discomfort flashed through Arthur, a frustration he'd mostly moved on from. He did his best to ignore it, waving her concern away. "Don't worry about it."
"He was just jealous, you know." Her nails ran along the small of his back. "He wants Laura to look at him the way I look at you."
Arthur had spent so much of his life yearning for change, to understand his purpose in the world and improve himself. The idea that a man with a good education, a successful career, and no disabilities could ever be jealous of him was, frankly, bizarre. But he didn't correct Y/N, instead locking her praise within his heart, preserving it for when he needed it most. He boosted himself on his forearm and fiddled with her V-neck, traced its button loops as he slipped the plastic knobs through them. "And how's that?'
A hint of scandal glimmered in her irises. She arched into him as he eased a strap down her upper arm to reveal her shapely breast, the lilac fabric momentarily catching on its taut peak. "Like I can't get enough of you."
He huffed at that, fondled her faintly before his lips met the velvety skin of her chest. A tonic comprised of the musk oil she'd dabbed on before the party and distinct sexual wanting wafted to his nostrils. He licked at her nipple, the bumps on her areola, and drew it between his teeth. She whined softly and lifted the bottom of her nightdress to her waist.
Hurriedly, he yanked on the waistband of her cotton panties, pushed them past her knees. She kicked them off while he knelt to lower his bottoms. Straddling her, he pumped himself back to hardness and opened the drawer of her nightstand. He searched haphazardly until he retrieved a small, glass bottle of lubricant. (She'd ordered it from a mail catalog, both of them a bit too bashful to walk into an adult shop, even together.)
She snagged it from him and poured half a teaspoon in her hand, then palmed herself. He moved between her legs and she grasped his length, coating him with the warm, slippery liquid. He pushed forward into her. Gradually, slowly, savoring every millimeter of her enticing heat. He noted the stretch of her mouth, the jut of her jaw, the lifting of her upper lip. "Mmm..." she breathed and begged him to keep going. When he did, her head tilted back into the pillow, eyelids falling shut. A smile cut across her cheeks as she purred her satisfaction. "Arthur, I love you."
His touch wandered down the curve of her thigh. At the sight of her subtle writhing beneath him, the sway of her slightly uneven breasts in time with his languid thrusts, he pushed her knee into the mattress, splayed her wider. He grunted lowly. "Look at me."
Their gazes met but didn't hold for long; hers dropped to where they were joined. She caressed right above his pubic bone. "I love seeing you like this." Her fingertips walked a line up his sternum to his chest. "And touching you like this." She wrapped her arms around his middle and drew him to her, locked their lips in a greedy kiss. "And making love like this."
He snorted. "I think this is the only reason you married me."
"Well, not the only reason. There's your good hair, too."
"I've been thinking about cutting it. Trying something new."
"Don't you dare." She tugged at his loose curls, wore her best pout. "What else would I hold onto when we're doing this?"
Laughing lightly, he bumped his nose to hers. Falling into her was like falling into his old fantasies, the ones that'd sustained him through years of isolation. Dates at diners, at comedy clubs, at donut shops, at home. Their shapes had changed as he'd matured, his role in them, his aspirations and infatuations. But they'd remained a warm comfort nonetheless, a place that felt like belonging. And now he belonged with her. Hunger filled him. Happiness. And love. So much love, more than he'd ever believed he'd carried in him. He bucked a little harder. "You feel so good," he murmured. "You make me feel so good."
A strained cry left her and her pelvis answered his steady rhythm with demands of its own. Her calves rose to squeeze him closer, encircle his narrow hips. They were pressed together so tightly; it felt like they were one flesh. He never wanted it to stop. But a dizzying euphoria had ignited, one that eclipsed the romantic yearnings of his heart, twisting his desire to last all morning into the desperate drive to possess her. Gasping, Arthur raised himself to his knees, delving deeper with each push. Their foreheads met and he grit his teeth at the scald of her, the texture of her walls. She fit as though she'd been made for him.
He supposed she was.
Pressure began in the base of him, building and building in terrific torment. The muscles of his inner thighs contracted inward. Tingling climbed his shaft, his tailbone, his spine. He wove his fingers into the sheet, his grip a vise that wrested its corner from the mattress. She kissed the spot where his jaw met his neck, all the while murmuring encouragements for him to let himself go.
Bliss shot through him, from the tips of his toes to the follicles on his scalp, and his back stiffened as he whimpered and poured into. Fever engulfed his frame, sublime in its frenzy, leaving him in a heady stupor. Aftershocks made him tremble. Once, twice. Until, sated and spent, he landed on top her. He closed his eyes, ribs rising and falling as he forced air into his lungs.
A minute later, he swallowed and looked down at her. "You didn't come."
She carded through his sweaty locks. "It's all righ-"
"Shh." He slid out of her and settled at her side, reached between her legs to swipe at her core. "I'm not done," he declared, tracing the edges of her entrance, slick and swollen. One of his favorite things about getting her off was demonstrating his prowess in bed, how well he'd learned with her. His thumb met her plump clitoral hood, and he felt her throb beneath his ministrations.
Nails biting his bicep, she rocked upwards. A bewitching blush crept up her breast, her neck, spread across her cheeks. Shallow pants hit his face, short puffs suffused with high-pitched whines, utterly irresistible. He circled her nub at a steady cadence, tapping when she'd shiver, and she clasped the back of his hand. He swirled his tongue around her nipple, sucked the pretty peak, and lowered the other strap of her nightgown to bare her completely. A hushed plea fell from her lips. "Please, please..."
Suddenly, her vulva grew white hot and she seized, her hips stuttering with each flutter of his touch to her folds. She thrusts her breasts towards him, a sharp moan caught in her throat. Liquid pooled against his fingers, proof of her rapture that made him wish, with mild amusement, that he could be an unmedicated young man again. He would've gladly taken her a second time.
Giggling and rubbing her temple, she released a long exhale and opened her eyes. He brushed her hair back and grinned, completely smitten, like the first time he'd heard a joke and understood the punchline. The light brown picture frame on his nightstand caught his attention, and he regarded the wallet size photo in it, one of the shots of Y/N from the booth at Amusement Mile. The last thing he looked at before turning in each night. He lay his head her shoulder and hummed, listened to the drum of her heart.
She smooched his hairline and wriggled out from beneath him to stand. Her nightie had been reduced to a crumpled stripe of lilac cinched about her waist. It felt tawdry and shameless and he wanted to see her in it for the rest of the weekend. But she peeled it down her legs, wrinkling her nose when it got stuck on her thighs, and stepped out of it one foot at a time. She dropped it on the floral bedspread and retrieved her bathrobe from the closet. "Meet you in the kitchen," she said, opening the door.
The sun had risen higher, its beams slanting across the covers. He basked in it, catlike, then swung his legs over the side of the bed. He pulled on his pajamas, got a new pair of socks from their dresser, and made his way to the kitchen. He washed off the remnants of Y/N's arousal from his fingers, popped open a prescription bottle and took a tablet. He poured water into the coffeemaker, grabbed the can of grounds from the second shelf, added three scoops to the paper filter. Their three-tone brown mugs sat in their spot next to the machine, waiting to be filled.
When the glass coffeepot was half full, Y/N emerged from the bathroom, chuckling to herself. She opened the breadbox on the opposite counter and took out a wax paper bag. "Do you have any idea how dull this morning would have been if we'd never met? I'd have read the Sunday paper, had a drink. Probably worked on a file." He handed her a couple dessert plates, watched her put a donut on each one. "I wonder where you'd be. What woman you'd have breakfast with, what jokes you'd be writing, what magic tricks you'd have learned."
"Um..." At first he wanted to ask where this speculation had come from, if Matt had let her in on exactly what he'd said. But the confident slant of her smirk told Arthur she was teasing. He tried to play along but winced. No matter how appealing, how extraordinary she found him, his gut told him there wouldn't have been another woman. There'd be no more stand-up routines, no more Carnival. He certainly wouldn't be taking care of Penny. He'd likely be locked up in the hospital, maybe even dead. Without an anchor, his life would have lost what little sense it had.
Y/N was one of his anchors now, hooked into the sand alongside his material, treatment, the ability to pay bills. He seized her hand and squeezed it tight, unaware he was squishing her fingers. "I don't wanna think about it," he said quietly.
She sidled up to him and pulled him to her side. Rubbed his flank soothingly and pecked the corner of his mouth. "Don't worry." She took his chin and guided him to look at her. The intimate comfort of her smile helped him believe her next words, even before she spoke them. "I'll always be here."
The pains and perks of barrel ageing facilities
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barrel-aged beers may be resource-intensive and low margin, however for brewers who’ve invested in packages, it’s greater than value it.
Queensland breweries Ballistic Beer and Black Hops have in latest weeks launched their very own programmes, however they’re removed from the primary. WA-based Rocky Ridge has roughly 300 barrels at anyone time, Felons Brewing Co. in Brisbane launched its barrel corridor which doubles as a reside music venue last year, and Melbourne’s Boatrocker has one of many longest-running programmes, having introduced in 60 used wine barrels in 2012 earlier than launching a dedicated facility in 2015, to call however a couple of. Others equivalent to Wildflower have made it their raison d’être.
At first look, the comparatively low margin barrel-aged beer won’t essentially make business sense as decided by the accountants, however the goal of those programmes is to not flip a large revenue, in response to brewers who’ve invested in them.
Matt Houghton co-founder of Boatrocker Brewers & Distillers, which has one of many nation’s longest-running programmes, admitted that whereas margins had been tight, there have been different, much less quantifiable advantages to a barrel ageing programme.
“Barrel ageing beer is actually extra resource-intensive than tank-fermented beer, nevertheless, the depth and complexity that may solely be achieved this fashion is sufficient to justify to us that it’s actually value it,” Houghton defined.
Equally, Dan Norris, co-founder of Black Hops, which launched its devoted barrel-aged beer taproom AWOL final month, stated that they had been nonetheless unsure of any return on funding.
“We actually don’t know if it’s value investing in to be fully trustworthy,” he admitted.
“It’s simply one thing we wished to do. A part of the advantages of being unbiased and majority founder-owned means we are able to do this stuff that aren’t essentially carried out for business causes.”
Offering each clients and the brewing and advertising and marketing staff with one thing new to sink their enamel into was greater than value it, he stated, and whether or not there may be buyer curiosity is one thing they’ll discover out in a couple of weeks.
“When it comes to the value level, our AWOL beers are presently $11 to $16 for a 440ml can so they’re fairly affordable.
“If we wished to optimise for charging extra, we might most likely simply brew a variety of large hazies in small batches, you can do these in a couple of weeks versus months or years. That’s not what AWOL is about.
“Usually we’ll deliver the value down versus up after we really feel it’s too excessive. That is notably the case with tremendous small batches. It’s wonderful how a lot beer prices while you make 200 litres versus 20,000 litres in a batch.”
Establishing a barrel ageing programme
Barrel ageing could be a drawn-out course of, and, if carried out accurately, requires some very particular circumstances.
Black Hops’ Dan Norris stated it has been a variety of work, requiring their barrel facility to be positioned in separate constructing with customized Foeders cooling pipes, and elements interchangeable with the primary brewery to scale back cross-contamination.
“There have been numerous adjustments that needed to occur,” he stated.
Like Black Hops, Boatrocker began out with a smaller programme utilizing only a few barrels.
“After we first arrange in 2012, I constructed a devoted cool room to accommodate our 60 barrels, full with temperature management,” stated Matt Houghton.
“We shortly realised that this was not essentially the most handy house, and as we grew in manufacturing of our core beers, we would have liked an even bigger house.”
Boatrocker opened its devoted barrel ageing facility in 2015 after a lease throughout the street from the primary brewery opened up.
“Temperature management in such a big house [around 3,300 m3] is extremely expensive, so we began out with insulating the roof with the most recent closed-cell know-how.
“This took two weeks to put in, nevertheless it retains the barrel room temperature at a mean of twenty-two˚C even within the hotter months. There are excessive days, and so now we have now invested in evaporative coolers for the positioning,” Houghton defined.
Every thing down to appropriate barrel racking must be selected, and in true brewing business trend, a collaborative method with different industries and a little bit of DIY obtained the job carried out at Boatrocker. However some parts want knowledgeable third-party method.
“One of many first items of apparatus we bought after we moved into the barrel room was a devoted barrel steamer. They’re not low cost, but it surely’s the best way with skilled area of interest tools,” Houghton stated.
“I’ve heard loopy tales of individuals attempting to rig up their very own steamer utilizing a modified stress cooker, however not solely is that extremely dangerous from an OH&S viewpoint, it won’t obtain the temperature required to adequately increase the temperature of the wooden nor the moisture degree to broaden the wooden, which is a vital consider imported barrels or older unused ones,” he defined.
Discover out extra in regards to the Ballistic’s barrel ageing programme on the Beer is a Dialog podcast with Jake Harrison.
Like Boatrocker, Ballistic realised it needed to have a completely separate facility.
“We recognised early that we didn’t need such a program to have shut interplay with our current manufacturing facility so started to discover our choices for an acceptable, close by location that allowed us to utilise elements of our current manufacturing brewery in Salisbury, while permitting us to effectively produce a majority of these beers with a quality-driven focus,” defined Lachy Crothers, head brewer and co-founder at Ballistic Beer Co.
The brand new website is 1km from its current Salisbury brewery, and has been designed with some distinctive options to adapt it to Queensland’s subtropical local weather.
“It features a temperature-controlled barrel room and two 25hL chrome steel fermenters. We produce wort at our current Salisbury brewery and transport it right here for fermentation and barrel filling,” Crothers defined.
“The positioning offers a variety of flexibility because it permits us to utilise stainless fermentation in addition to barrel conditioning. This enables us to brew a broad array of conventional and up to date combined fermentation beers.”
After all every location shall be completely different primarily based on local weather and the calls for of the barrel ageing programme, however a mission like this takes a lot work, and in an already time-poor business, the query stays: Is it value it?
A hyperlink to historical past
It’s straightforward to contemplate barrel ageing to be a fad within the brewing world, which has seen many come and go, however barrel ageing is slightly completely different in response to the brewers who’ve invested in it.
“After travelling round Europe in my early 20s and sampling these unbelievable beers for Cantillon and Rodenbach, the influence of wooden on beer was etched in my mind in a really optimistic method,” Houghton defined.
“The character and high quality is the same as wine, and arguably a greater meals match. Nevertheless, these beers solely scratch the floor of barrel-aged beer.”
It’s an attention-grabbing attribute to need to imbue in your beer, given the makes an attempt earlier brewers made to take away the wooden flavours and people of any wine or spirits that had been in-barrel earlier than.
Tumblr media
Traditionally, successive soakings of boiling water and hydrochloric acid aimed to take away the wooden flavours in new barrels, or they had been lined with pitch. Again then, solely when the barrel had been classed as ‘impartial’ wouldn’t it be thought to carry beer.
Now, brewers purposely age their beer in barrels to affect the aroma of the beer, bringing out flavours of oak, or the whiskey, rum or wine that was its earlier occupant.
The hyperlink to the historical past of the brewing of beer, whereas tailored for contemporary tastes, is a part of the attraction of barrel-aged beer.
“Barrel ageing packages are usually not solely a historic hyperlink to the traditional traditions of beer in barrels, however they permit the brewer and buyer to develop into emotionally hooked up to the story, model and beer by giving them a glimpse and style into beer’s previous,” Houghton stated.
“As for the ingesting expertise of the shopper, barrel-aged beer exhibits nuances and complexities that wonderful wines can be jealous of, and simply match and lots of occasions beat wine on the eating desk. So in a nutshell, I wholeheartedly imagine they contribute to the expertise of visiting a brewery.”
Ballistic’s Lachy Crothers agreed. He stated that combined fermentation and barrel-aged beers occupy a charming sector of the beer market.
“Their business attraction actually differs from another kinds which are extra extensively produced.
“We recognise that the present markets for such beers are maybe much less developed, however are additionally occupied by very passionate, educated shoppers who respect high quality and craftsmanship.”
Ongoing shopper schooling about these beers, their histories and their distinctive traits is the important thing to advancing this sector transferring ahead, Crothers stated.
“They’re actually a pleasant factor to have, for us it’s extra about taking these shoppers who’re actually invested in beer or our model and taking them on a journey with us.
“From a advertising and marketing viewpoint, these beers enable us to supply a extra experience-driven worth proposition in comparison with a normal beer of the core vary.”
Black Hops’ Dan Norris stated that whereas nothing is obligatory on this planet of beer, something a brewery can do to make their providing extra attention-grabbing can solely be a superb factor.
“We’ve all the time been fairly experimental and I believe that’s given us quite a bit to speak about in our natural advertising and marketing, and it’s meant now we have a variety of enjoyable issues for workers to work on and clients to purchase,” he stated.
“That experimentation for us I believe has been an enormous a part of our success. There are different manufacturers who haven’t experimented an excessive amount of and have additionally discovered their very own success in different areas and I’m an enormous believer in doing what’s working for you versus leaping on one thing as a result of different individuals are.
“I don’t suppose AWOL could have a lot of an influence on the overall gross sales of Black Hops beers, 90% of our gross sales are our common beers. However having a program like AWOL has an amazing oblique profit throughout many elements of the enterprise.”
Matt Houghton defined that it was all a part of transferring trendy craft beer away from the mainstream perceptions of beer as a soulless, industrial course of.
“Beer may also be a gathering level of artwork and business, the place mixing distinctive barrels of beer is the remit of the expert brewer who understands beer in barrels, how these flavours work collectively, how the earlier inhabitant of the barrel will contribute to the top flavour profile of the beer,” Houghton stated.
“Certain, we make ‘regular’ beers too, however life is just too quick to be simply ‘regular’… why not rock the boat slightly and make one thing completely different and scrumptious?”
How Technology Is Changing How We Treat Cabinets
Funds-pleasant and versatile, laminate is a countertops well-liked choice for kitchen cupboards. I considered utilizing wood for counters — I've used it earlier than and cherished it — but decided to go with linoleum as a result of it is simple to take care of and would give the kitchen a retro look that may go effectively with the ground and the enamel-topped desk. My first reminiscence of encountering (ouch) this solution was in graduate college, once I rented a small attic condo in an old house. The kitchen nonetheless had a mid-century fridge (the sort with a freezer compartment that required weekly defrosting) and a superb old stove with fats-ringed electric components and illuminated knobs that went from blue to inexperienced to yellow and red as you turned up the heat. The ground and counter have been linoleum; the counter had a metallic edge. That counter had stood as much as a long time of wear from renters, so I figured the same therapy would work wonderful in my kitchen.
Known broadly underneath the brand title Formica, this reasonably priced material was as soon as ubiquitous in American houses. It's sturdy and laborious-carrying, making it a surprisingly resilient option. Plastic laminate is well the most affordable countertop materials of the bunch, and has the added convenience of being one of many few out there as ready-to-set up slabs at residence centers. Plastic laminate additionally is available in sheets, typically 2x4 or 4x8 feet, which might be cut to suit. When you're buying laminate to use to an existing floor, be sure that to solely buy matte-finish, normal goal laminate. Thinner laminates or ones with a glossier end aren't suited to countertop use. Modern laminates have come a long way within the design division, with realistic graphics that can imitate supplies like stone.
These are highly unique countertops for a kitchen—a dialog piece. As soon as the outer mildew is done, you'll must construct a help body to encompass it. The concrete you may be pouring is heavy - about 10 to fifteen pounds per-sq. foot and you don't need the sides of the mold to bend with the burden.
Tumblr media
Pre-forged countertops are poured, cured and finished off-site, in your workshop or storage, after which moved to the place they'll be put in. One huge benefit to this method is that the countertop is constructed, cured, sanded and finished out of the best way, without disrupting the use of your kitchen or toilet — or creating a huge mess. Also, you won't have to take away your current countertop till it's time to set up the new one. However, concrete slabs are extraordinarily heavy (a 2 x three-foot, 2-inch thick slab weighs roughly one hundred forty five pounds), requiring extra assist to take away them from the shape and install them.
However my husband wished more contrast. We are portray our cabinets white and I want a white backsplash, so mild countertops would have made the entire kitchen white. Which I would love, however the hubster not a lot. And I did like the idea of contrast, so we narrowed our decisions to a black countertop.
3. Glue Counter Sides. Cover the backs of the long strips of laminate items and the countertop sides with a good layer of contact cement. We discovered the easiest approach was to apply the cement utilizing low-cost foam rollers from Harbor Freight. Let glue dry for 30 minutes (check the directions on the can since some manufacturers could have totally different dry times).
How to choose a cooktop
Tumblr media
Equipment for cooking is an indispensable attribute in any kitchen. Therefore, the demand for it is consistently high. Today the market offers various solutions, including traditional cooktops, kitchen ranges, wall ovens, microwaves, etc, and more modern multi-cookers, etc. Additionally, high competition stimulates companies to actively use various innovative solutions in terms of heat treatment technologies. Therefore, the choice of the optimal device depends on many factors, including its price, functionality and design. Cooktops are one of the most common devices. Reliability, compactness, simplicity and relatively low price provide them with high competitiveness compared to other devices. Today, the market offers a huge number of different models in this segment. Of course, their key features significantly affects the choice of the optimal model. Therefore, classification of this segment can be useful. The list of basic criteria includes the type of burners and heating elements, design and material.
Types
Modern cooktops use gas and electric burners. Gas models use gas burners whose power varies from 100 to 3500 W. Today electric models use the spiral, halogen, ribbon (Hi-Light) or induction electric heating elements. Of course, induction heating elements are the most modern, but they are used only in expensive models. Combined models combine gas and electric burners. The most common ratio between them is 3/1 or 2/2. These models can use gas and electricity.
Gas cooktops.
Tumblr media
Gas models are the most traditional and familiar. They have long established themselves as simple and reliable devices. Gas models are adapted to the classic interior of the kitchen. The range of models is very diverse. Therefore, the user can easily select the appropriate model. Almost all modern models can easily be connected to the oven using a special gas supply hose. The cost of the standard model is significantly lower compared to the built-in models.
Electric cooktops.
Tumblr media
The electric model has a flat housing with a thickness of about 1.2-2.4 in that is placed in the countertop. But it must be located on distance no closer 1.6 in from the wall or furniture. Electric cooktops have usually rectangular or hexagonal shape. Depth of rectangular panels is about 23.6 in. The width varies from 10 to 35 in. Narrow model with two burners is often called a domino. They are ideal for forming the optimal configuration, including the possibility of combining different types of heating elements.
Tumblr media
Pros: - safety. Lack of an open fire eliminates the risk of burns. The possibility of gas leakage is also excluded. Electric models not consume the oxygen due to flame absence. - care. Electrical surface, especially glass-ceramics, is very easy cleared due to the smooth and flat surface and the lattices absence. Cons: - cookware. Electric panels require the dishes with a flat bottom. Also, the size of it bottom must match with the cooking zone diameter. - cooking time. Electric burners require some time for heating, except of induction hotplates.
Combined panel
Tumblr media
These models combine the electric and gas burners in varying proportions. Therefore, these models combine the features of gas and electric hobs. Today the range of combined models is much smaller compared to mono-models. The possibility of using various energy sources is a major advantage of such panels.
Material
Modern cooktops are made from enamel, aluminum, steel or glass-ceramic. Enameled surfaces are inexpensive and have a wide color range. But cleaning the enamel requires some effort. Enamel is sensitive to mechanical actions, and over time, is covered with cracks. Of course, they worsen the appearance and make it difficult to clean. White, black or brown colors are the most common. Aluminum surface looks unusual, but it's convenient and practical. These models are inexpensive. Aluminum is resistant to mechanical and thermal effects. But it's sensitive to scratches. Therefore, the use of abrasive powders is not recommended. This surface also retains moisture and fingerprints. Stainless steel surfaces have a polished or matt surface. This surface is easier to clean than enamel. However, maintaining a constant gloss requires the user to perform some work with using the special cleaning agents. Glass-ceramic models are most expensive and popular. Stylish appearance provides them a great advantage compared to other coating types.
Tumblr media
Domino
The number of burners varies from 2 to 6. But models with 4 or 5 cooking zones are more common. Narrow panels with one or two burners are often called a domino. Domino is a separate line of built-in surfaces for cooking. They are made in a unified design style and look like a single architectural ensemble. These narrow modules can be combined into a single modular system. For example, electrical and gas modules can be combined into one cooktop. This design is ideal for forming the optimal configuration by providing the addition of grill , deep fryers, concave WOK burners for cooking oriental dishes, table hoods, built-in food processor, stand for hot dishes, scales, etc.
Tumblr media
Domino elements are placed separately or together. Special connection cables provide the installation of modules with each other. The Dominoes series is specially designed for small kitchens. The advantages of this solution are convincingly demonstrated in the video at the end.
Burner
Many modern models are equipped with dual circuit burner with variable heating zone that includes two concentric circles with different diameters.
Tumblr media
This function is designed for selection the cooking zone diameter in accordance with the size of the cookware. Selection is carried out by lightly pressing the touch button or by simply turning the knob. Some electric models are equipped with a special sensor that automatically controls the cookware size and selects the optimal diameter. Dual circuit burner provides energy savings by choosing the optimal heating zone. Oval heating zone is very convenient for cookware with an oval bottom (pallet for fish, etc.). Oval is transformed from a circular shape with the help of an additional heating segment. The glass-ceramic burner provides high power and almost instantly heats up to the set temperature. The cooking temperature is constant during cooking. Adjustment of the set temperature is also carried out instantly.
Design
Cooktops also are divided into built-in and freestanding models. Built-in models only work together with an oven and do not have a separate control panel. This design is familiar and comfortable enough. But ovens and cooktops from different manufacturers are incompatible with each other. Companies do not always guarantee the compatibility of their panels, even with their own ovens. Many companies give a special table of compatibility for their models. Freestanding model has its own control panel and is not related with oven. Modern models use conventional knobs or touch panel.
Mirror Gazing (Scrying)
Tumblr media
Written and compiled by George Knowles
Since time began, man has been fascinated by his reflected image as seen in the still waters of woodland lakes, pools and rivers.  Among primitive peoples superstition was rife, and seeing their image reflected in water may have been like catching a glimpse of their souls, for it was widely believed that the soul existed separate from the body.  Others may have found themselves gazing through a portal into the spirit realm, there communicating with departed loved ones or gaining insights into future events.  However, these same woodland lakes and pools were also known haunts of fairy folks and nature spirits, sometimes friendly, but sometimes hostile, and likely to snatch at human reflection to capture the souls of the unwary.  Little wonder then that anything reflecting images was regarded as magical.
The Mirror of Venus by Burne-Jones
Ancient prophets, soothsayers and oracles initially used bowls filled with water in which to scry and divine answers to questions about past, present and future events.  Later, highly polished stones such as beryl, crystal and quartz were used for similar purposes.  The first man-made mirrors used in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome were commonly made of sheeted metal (pewter, copper, tin, bronze or silver etc.) and flattened into rounded disks to which handles were applied.  Some had decorative designs inscribed on the back, but the face would have been highly polished and reflective.
Tumblr media
In the Middle Ages when it became possible to make glass, crude hand held glass mirrors were made backed with thin layers of metal such as tin and lead.  Later during the 16th century, better quality mirrors were produced in Murano, Venice (Italy), the backs of which were covered with an amalgam of tin and mercury (normally 75% tin to 25% mercury).  In 1836 a German chemist called ‘Justus von Liebig’ developed the process of coating a glass surface with metallic silver, a process that is still used today.  By the end of the 17th century plate glass was developed, and the use of large stationary mirrors became commonplace household features.
Legends, Myths and Folklore
Dr. John Dee (1527 – 1608)
Dr. John Dee was a famous Alchemist, Mathematician, Astronomer; he was also an adviser to Queen Elizabeth I on matters pertaining to science and astrology, as such, he was commonly referred to as “the last royal magician”.  A serious academic, some thought him to be the most learned man in the whole of Europe.  He was fascinated by all things occult, and was an adept in Hermetic and Cabbalistic philosophy.  Dee had a particular interest in divination, and spent much of his later life experimenting with different methods in his efforts to communicate with Angels.  From 1583 onward, Dee worked with Edward Kelly using both a black obsidian mirror and a crystal ball to see visions of ‘Angels’.  Allegedly they communicated by pointing to squares containing letters and symbols that Dee had transcribed.
Tumblr media
John Dee’s black obsidian mirror and crystal ball
This is the mirror together with a small smoky quartz crystal ball used by Dee and Kelly for their occult research.  These are now on display at the British Museum in London.  The mirror is made of highly polished obsidian (volcanic glass) and was one of many objects brought back to Europe after the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish conquistador Hernán (Ferdinand) Cortés. Obsidian was sacred to Tezcatlipoca, the Aztec “Sky God” associated with Kings, Warriors and Sorcerers, and whose name can be translated as “Smoking Mirror”.  The Aztec priests used mirrors for divination and conjuring up visions.
The case along side it was especially made to fit the mirror, it has a paper label written by the English antiquary Sir Horace Walpole who acquired the mirror in 1771 stating:  “The Black Stone into which Dr Dee used to call his spirits...” and added later:  “Kelly was Dr Dee’s associate and is mentioned with this very stone in “Hudibras” (a satirical poem by Samuel Butler, first published in 1664) Part 2. Canto 3 v. 631.  Kelly did all his feats upon The Devil’s Looking glass, a Stone".
Archimedes
In one of the many legends of Greece, the mathematician Archimedes (287-212 BC) invented giant mirrors that were used to reflect the rays of the Sun onto Roman warships during the battle of Syracuse in 212 B.C.
Tumblr media
Wall painting from the Stanzino delle Matematiche in the Galleria degli Uffizi (Florence, Italy). Painted by Giulio Parigi - 1599-1600.
“At last in an incredible manner he (Archimedes) burned up the whole Roman fleet. For by tilting a kind of mirror toward the sun he concentrated the sun's beam upon it; and owing to the thickness and smoothness of the mirror he ignited the air from this beam and kindled a great flame, the whole of which he directed upon the ships that lay at anchor in the path of the fire, until he consumed them all.”
(The above description is from Dio's Roman History - Translated by Earnest Cary, Loeb Classical Library, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1914)
Narcissus
In Greek mythology Narcissus was a handsome young man whose beautiful good looks claimed the love of all the women who met him, but he continually rejected their advances.  One day while hunting in the woods he came upon a clear pool of water and stopped to take a drink from it.  Mirrors were almost unknown in those times, but when he bent down to drink from the water, he saw what he thought was another young man.  Amazingly the young man seems to be alive and responding, for when Narcissus smiled, so did he.  The young man was so incredibly beautiful that Narcissus immediately fell in love with him, but when he bent forward to kiss him, just when their lips should have touched, the young man’s image blurred and rippled and all he got was a mouthful of water.
Tumblr media
Narcissus by John William Waterhouse (1903)
Eventually Narcissus realised it was his own reflection in the water, but he could not bear to pull himself away.  As he continued to gaze longingly at himself, he gradually pined away and died.  At the place where his body had lain now grows a beautiful flower, a Narcissus, nodding its head over its own reflection in a pool.
Perseus and Medusa of the Gorgons
In Greek mythology, the Gorgons (daughters of the sea god Phorcys and his wife Ceto) were three monstrous sisters called:  Stheno, Euryale and Medusa.  They were dragon-like creatures covered with scales, had wings, claws, enormous teeth and snakes replicating hair.  They lived on the farthest side of the western ocean, shunned and feared because a single direct glance at one of them could turn a person to stone.  Of the three, only Medusa was mortal and could be killed, a feat that was achieved by the hero Perseus (son of Zeus).
Perseus, with the aid of a sword given to him by Hermes and a highly polished shield given to him by Athena, by watching Medusa’s reflection in the shield, was able to cut off her head without directly looking at her.  The severed head, however, still had the power to turn a person into stone if it was looked upon.  Legend has it that Perseus gave the severed head to Athena who used it to turn Atlas into stone.  This stone became known as the Atlas Mountains that now hold up the heaven and earth.
Tumblr media
Medusa painted by Caravaggio 1596-1597
Other legends about mirrors and scrying include the Goddess Hathor, who carried a shield that could reflect back all things in their true light.  Nostradamus is believed to have used a small bowl of water as a scrying tool into which he gazed and received images of future events.  And who can forget the magic mirror featured in the Disney folktale classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, when the wicked Queen immortalized the question “Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?”
Making a Scrying Mirror
All types and sizes of mirrors can be used for scrying, but commonly round or oval mirrors seem to be preferred.  Old mirrors seem to work better than new mirrors, and more particularly those encased in a silver frame.  Silver is generally associated with the moon, and while scrying can be practised at any time, best results are often gained in the quiet of night during a full or new moon.
Many people find it easier to scry using a black or obsidian mirror, the dark depth of a black mirror being more conducive to inducing visions.  Obsidian is a black or dark-coloured volcanic lava rock, chemically similar to granite, but formed by cooling rapidly on the Earth’s surface at low pressure.  The glassy texture of the rock is the result of its rapid cooling, which inhibits the growth of crystals.
Obsidian was highly valued by the early civilisations of Mexico, who used it for making sharp-edged tools, ritual and ceremonial sculptures, and polished mirrors similar to the one owned by Dr. John Dee above.  Sadly, the ancient method of mining, grinding and smoothing obsidian into reflective mirrors was a long and drawn-out process, and so true obsidian mirrors, particularly old ones, are now quite expensive.  However, given modern techniques and the demand created in the contemporary market, new obsidian mirrors can be obtained from most modern occult shops who stock them in a range of sizes at competitive prices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s an old mirror and stand I found at a car boot sale recently.  I then purchased a new black obsidian mirror slate from an occult store in Glastonbury and collected  all the bits and pieces needed to transform and create my own magick mirror.
An alternative to using obsidian is to make your own ‘black’ mirror.  If you have an old silver picture frame lying around the home, simply take out the glass, clean it being careful to remove any marks, finger prints or blemishes, then paint the back of it black.  Matt black paint tends to work better than gloss paint, as does black enamel or car spray paint.  You may need to give the glass a few coats of paint to cover it properly, but allow each coat to dry thoroughly before adding the next.  Also try to leave a smooth finish without streaks or runs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having rubbed down the mirror frame with fine sandpaper and sprayed it with black satin paint, I decided to decorate the boarder with appropriate directional and elemental stones.  North is Malachite representing Earth, East is Citrine representing Air, South is Tigers Eye representing Fire, and West is Lapis Lazuli representing Water.  Replacing the silver backed mirror glass into the frame, I then centralised and bonded the black obsidian slate to it leaving a silver rim around the black mirror...
Another good idea is to use the curved glass face of an old clock and paint the convex side black; you will of course need to make a suitable frame to mount it on.  Antique shops are a good source for old clocks, and who knows, you could also find an antique silver frame on which to mount it.  Frames can be as plain or as ornate as you like; you may even wish to personalise or decorate it with meaningful stones, gems or sigils.  Remember the mirror will also need some method of standing-up on your altar or table, ideally at a shallow or adjustable angle.  Some picture frames have a leg on the back for this purpose, or alternatively you could use a display stand similar to those used for collector plates.
Tumblr media
... and the end result is my own Magick Mirror.
Before using your mirror, as with all magickal tools, it needs to be cleansed of all previous associations and negative energies, then dedicated and charged with your own energy.  It is up to you how simple or elaborate you wish to make this process, but most people do it inside a properly consecrated circle.  Once your circle is formed and quarters called, a simple dedication might go something like this:
“Into this sacred space I bring this mirror, here to be cleansed and dedicated to my service”.  Face each direction in turn and call on its associated element with these or similar words (start with North - Earth):  “By the spirits of the North and the powers of the Earth, I purify and dedicate this mirror” (repeat the same with the other directions:  East - Air, South – Fire, and West - Water).  Next you may wish to call whatever deities you are working with for their blessing, saying:  Goddess/God (or deity names), bless this mirror, let it be a tool I use for positive purposes.  Guard and watch over the works that come from it, and ensure no harm can ever be caused by it.  In thy name Goddess/God I dedicate this mirror to my service.  So Mote It Be!”
Mirror Gazing (Scrying)
The art of mirror gazing (scrying) is called Catoptromancy, a term that refers to the use of reflective surfaces for the purposes of divination.  Scrying mirrors can be used to make contact with spirit guides, to access knowledge for healing and self-improvement, or to define the past, predict the present, and perceive the future.  As a portal into other realms, it can also be used to aid astral travel, and during ritual to communicate with deity.
Scrying can be practised at any time, but best results are often gained in the quiet of night after the hustle and bustle of the day’s activities.  It is not necessary to construct a fully consecrated circle for scrying; it is enough to simply create your sacred space by visualising a circle of white light surrounding and purifying the appointed working area.  In a quiet darkened room, place your mirror on a table or altar with a dark cloth beneath it.  Light a candle, one on each side of the mirror, but in such a position they don’t reflect on the mirror’s surface, and if you wish, burn an appropriate blend of incense to stimulate the psychic senses.  Switch off all other light sources except for the two candles, and seat yourself comfortably in front of the mirror.  Take a few minutes to relax while you tune into the atmosphere created.  When ready to start, first ground and center yourself then call your guides or guardians to protect the work from unwanted or misleading influences.
To begin, when looking at the mirror try not to just stare at it, but look through its surface as if gazing into a dark and endless tunnel.  After awhile, images and colours will begin to take form, they may even appear and take shape outside the mirror surrounding it on all sides.  When you first start scrying be patient, keeping your first sessions to about 10 - 30 minutes, and gradually work it up to hour-long sessions as you learn.  The art of scrying is interpreting what you see in the images and colours as they take form.  This in a way it is a little like dream interpretation, and initially you may wish to consult one of the many books on the subject to help define the images you see.  At the end of the day however, the real interpretation will be what those images mean to you personally.
After you have completed your scrying session, re-ground yourself and close your sacred space.  You may wish to keep a journal and note down any visions you received during your session and later compare them with a list of dream interpretations.  The more you practice, the more familiar the images and their meanings will become, but you may need to meditate on them for awhile to reveal any hidden meanings.
In conclusion, there are many differing ways and methods of scrying in addition to the one above, so it pays to experiment and use what works best for you.  Whatever tool or method you use, be it your own personalised mirror, a crystal ball, or simply a bowl of coloured water; it can with time and patience become a font of wisdom and knowledge.  As Ostara, the Spring Equinox approaches, a time of fresh beginnings, who knows what future truths can be divined???  Believe in your abilities and may you find what you seek.
Agilenano - News: Building a Redwood Patio – The Best Paint and Tools For Painting Your Deck
When it’s nice and warm outside and the birds are chirping we feel this impulse to just go outside. That’s easy to do when you live in a house with a garden and a nice patio or a deck that you can admire the world from. That brings us to today’s topic: decks and how to paint and keep them in good shape. It’s usually something that you get to worry about in spring so it’s nice to get a head start around this time of the year. With that in mind, we’ve prepared a list of essential supplies that you’re going to need if you’re interested in doing some maintenance work on your deck.
Knee pads or pants
Since you’re going to spend lots of time on your hands and knees while working on your deck, you might want to get yourself some kneepads or a pair of reinforced pants so you don’t ruin your regular clothes in the process. At the same time, these offer plenty of other advantages. These utility pants, for example, are made of thick cotton and are both comfortable to wear and very durable. They have reinforced knees and also a bunch of additional pockets so you can carry tools and other things with you.
If you’d rather not wear work pants you can still get some extra protection for your knees. Knee pads are very helpful, especially when you’re working outside. These ones have soft gel cushions and high-density foam padding which are designed to offer additional comfort and to make your task more enjoyable. The pads also have heavy-duty shells for added protection.
If you need more help deciding which type of work trousers or knee pads you should get, there are plenty of helpful reviews that you can check out. There is an in-depth buying guide on Heatingforce that you can have a look at to get a better idea of what to look for when it comes to work trousers with knee pads.
Screwdriver
Everyone should have a screwdriver set in their home. This is such a basic and useful tool and it’s an absolute essential in general, not just for this project. A good starter kit is this set of 10 screwdrivers with magnetic tips that make it easy to take the screws out. They also have ergonomic non-slip handles that feel comfortable in the hand.
Dustpan and broom
In case you don’t have a dustpan and a broom set, now would be a good time to get one. If you’re going to make your deck look nice and pretty you’ll need to clean it properly and you’ll also get to use this set in the future so it’s a good investment. This set is pretty nice because of the 52” long handles that let you easily clean up without having to bend down at all. The bristle broom doesn’t absorb water and the dustpan has a rubber lip that sits flush with the floor preventing any dust and items from being pushed underneath.
Work gloves
You should also get some work gloves to protect your hands while working on your deck. These ones have thermoplastic rubber knuckle protection and an adjustable hook and loop closure system that ensures a secure fit. They durable and offer lots of protection without being oversized. Also, there are a few extra details that stand out such as the terry cloth sweat ipe placed on the back of the thumb.
Sander – BLACK+DECKER Random Orbit Sander
For this project, you’re also going to need a sander. This is a basic sander with random orbital action and should be just right for the job. It’s efficient and easy to use and the hook and loop system makes it very easy to change the discs. It also has a dust-sealed switch that keeps all the debris out and it comes with a dust bag.
You should also get some spare sanding discs which you might actually need for this project. There are lots of different types to choose from and they’re all specialized to deal with certain specific scenarios or needs. These ones are really versatile. The set includes 70 pieces (120, 240, 320, 600 and 800 grit, 20 pieces of each). They’re made from premium aluminum oxide and have pre-punched holes that help with dust management.
Leaf blower
A leaf blower is useful for efficiently and quickly clearing your deck and walkways from debris and although you don’t necessarily need one it might be a good idea to consider the investment since you’ll also have use for it in the future. Consider a cordless leaf blower like this one. It’s compact, easy to use and also durable and efficient. It also has a lightweight and ergonomic design. It has a 20V max 5.0 Ah Lithium Ion Battery which gives you 400 CFM and 90 MPH performance.
The Best Deck Paint Options
1. Sik250-045.01 Cetol Srd Re Mahogany 045 Gal
Decks need to be periodically sealed and painted and that’s a really nice way to keep them looking nice and pretty and also giving them a new look in some cases. There are plenty of different types of paint that you can choose from. This one is an oil-based paint designed to offer a translucent matte wood finish. A single coat is enough to offer your deck wood the protection it needs and to also give it a beautiful look.
2. Kilz Enamel Porch & Patio Latex Floor Paint
You can choose from a variety of different colors, not just the typical natural wood tones. This right here is an acrylic paint designed specifically for outdoor decks and patios. This is the slate gray version. It offers a durable finish and it’s resistant to fading, scuffing, cracking and peeling, being able to withstand typical outdoor condition with ease. It needs to be applied on primed surfaces and offers a low sheen finish. Once applied, it dries in about an hour.
3. In The Swim-Patio and Deck Paint Ivory
If you prefer a lighter color, perhaps this ivory paint would be better suited for your deck. It’s great for concrete patios and decks which are most common when it comes to modern and contemporary houses. It offers a non-slip finish and has great coverage. You can also get it in other colors such as granite or white.
4. Olympic solid deck color stain
This is a stain and sealant combo that you can use for wooden decks, patios as well as fences and other surfaces. It offers a waterproof finish and offers a mildew-resistant coating. It also makes the surface more resistant to UV rays and to scuffing which ensures that your deck will look like new for longer. The two-in-one combo also allows you to save plenty of time and effort, making any maintenance work a lot more enjoyable.
5. Defy Extreme Wood Stain Natural Pine
Another good option for exterior wooden decks is this semi-transparent wood stain. It’s water-based and eco-friendly and it allows you to highlight the beautiful grain of the wood. You can also use this on fences and even furniture. It offers a protective coat and a natural matte finish which reflects UV rays and prevents the wood from losing color over time. If you’re planning to use this when adding a maintenance coat to your deck you’ll appreciate the fact that there’s no need for sanding beforehand.
Brush applicator
Don’t forget the brush applicator, otherwise you’ll have a hard time applying the stain or the paint. Some are better than others and if you can find one that helps you save some time and effort then you should definitely consider the option. This deck stain brush applicator is super versatile and very efficient, allowing you to quickly apply the paint, stain or sealer on your deck and between all the cracks in no time. The pole is not included.
You should also get a set of smaller brushes. This one includes 5 different types. You get a 1” flat brush, one with a 1-1/2” angle, one with a 2” stubby angle, a 2” flat one and a 2-1/2” angle brush. You can use them for a variety of different indoor and outdoor projects, including to apply the paint stain or sealer in all the corners and on the edges of your deck.
2019 Gift Guide: For the Chef
The holidays are the perfect time to stop and recognize the efforts of those friends and family whose cooking and hospitality you’ve enjoyed throughout the year. Whether your recipient is passionate about preparing the perfect cup of coffee, obsessed with grilling a perfect steak, or simply fond of scooping ice cream for themselves on the regular, we’ve got you covered with ten gift ideas picked for their elevated attention to materials, design, and ergonomics – each surely to be appreciated with a *chef’s kiss*.
Yield Design 850 ML Ceramic French Press \\\ $120 Even with the variety of implements dedicated to preparing coffee in our kitchen – modern and traditional, manual and mechanical – I still regularly use the traditional french method. It’s fairly fool-proof, capable of coaxing flavors from all variety of roasts without much fuss. But maybe most enjoyable about the french press is the oh-so-satisfying sensation of pressing down on the handle, commencing the transformation of water into caffeinated refreshment. Yield’s press pot is a lot nicer looking than any french press I’ve used, and its 3.5-cup serving capacity and heat-hogging ceramic body aids in extending the morning ritual in style.
Noori V01 Grill \\\ $3200 The Noori is a matryoshka doll meets grill – a concrete bodied, multi-tier outdoor cooking station on wheels that opens up to reveal an all-in-one charcoal grill, pizza oven, rocket stove, and fire pit. And while other grills are large and typically an eyesore, the V01 presents a handsomely sculptural profile made of refractory concrete designed to withstand extremely high temperatures. Details like the reclaimed side handles and carbon steel wheels add an extra touch of design and utility that no Home Depot special can ever match.
Bendo Cool Luxe Cake Rack \\\ $28 A cake rack may seem too mundane for a holiday gift, but if your intended recipient loves baking, you’ll be pleasantly surprised how welcome a stylish (and new) rack is received in any baker’s kitchen. Although available in standard black, it’s the copper edition that stands out as gift-worthy, adding an unexpected level of glam to complement the unique grill pattern Bendo has bestowed upon their design.
Aarke Carbonator II \\\ $199 If you know someone who likes to make sparkling water or homemade soda at home, they’re going to love the sleek and compact Aarke carbonator. The Aarke replaces plastic for a stainless steel housing, making the unit easy to clean, stable, and good looking enough to leave out and on the kitchen counter. And thankfully the design isn’t limited by proprietary parts, compatible with CO2 cylinders from Sodastream, AGA, Linde, and many other 425g 60l cylinders for sparkling water makers.
Cylde Stovestop Tea Kettle \\\ $99 The Fellow Clyde kettle is a striking example of form serving function, with an easy to grip handle enabling easy one-handed pouring. The kettle’s soft rounded profile and matte finish imparts the appearance of contemporary ceramics, but the stainless steel body is rated to work with any stovetop, whether gas, electric, or induction. A two-tone harmonic whistle adds an aural element to the pleasures and rituals of preparing tea.
Belle V Left or Right-Handed Ice Cream Scoop \\\ $39 The majority of us go through life without giving much thought of when to use our dominant hand. But left-handed individuals have to navigate a world of endless small hurdles for all variety of functions. Make their life a little easier – and tastier – with an ice cream scoop sculpted to feel comfortable in hand…then remind them that you deserve an extra scoop for your considerate efforts.
Combekk Dutch Oven Thermometer \\\ $332 Long before the Instant Pot, there was the Dutch oven. Combining cast iron construction with long cooking hours of low temperature cooking is a proven method of rendering even the toughest cuts of meat into tender morsels for supper. And while there are numerous cast iron models capable of slow-cooking, braising, and roasting, the Combekk is the first we’ve seen with an integrated thermometer. Its modern-industrial design isn’t just great looking, it’s protected with a 1-layer enamel coating and backed by a 40-year warranty, promising decades of pot roasts and no-knead Dutch oven bread.
Alessi Moka by David Chipperfield \\\ $55 What a daunting task it must have been to update one of the most iconic examples of modern industrial design. But that’s exactly what architect David Chipperfield did for Alessi with the Moka, modernizing the indelible design of the Moka Pot invented by Luigi di Ponti in 1933 into a form that’s both progressive yet respectful of the original. Gift this to the coffee drinker and design aficionado with an appreciation for tasteful progress.
The Range by Balmuda \\\ $600 Despite its name The Range is actually a microwave, but one equipped with a refreshingly uncomplicated pair of dials and a lone button in lieu of the typical Scrabble board of buttons normally associated with microwave controls. Minimalists will find its pared design almost as pleasing as the gentle recordings of acoustic guitars and drums sound effects programmed to chime while adjusting controls and to notify the completion of heating up your cup of tea, popcorn, or meal.
Sori Yanagi Sake Glass \\\ $36 These bell-shaped serving glasses were originally designed by industrial designer Sori Yanagi for the purpose of serving sake (Yanagi being the same talent responsible for designing the torch holder and the seats in the stadium for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964), but there’s no reason why they couldn’t be used to serve any variety of drinks, ice cream, fruit, or other desserts.
Shinola Bronze Monster Automatic 43mm Watch Review
Shinola, the Detroit-based maker of hipster-oriented briefcases, bicycles, and watches, has taken some flak since its 2011 inception, most prominently for its American heritage-oriented marketing campaigns and, at times, exaggerated claims of U.S. manufacture. It became serious. In 2016, the Federal Trade Commission ruled that Shinola must no longer include “Made in the USA” or similar claims in its marketing materials and must become more transparent regarding its manufacturing and supply chain processes, a blow which might have upended the brand. Some watch enthusiasts have also been tough on Shinola, citing high retail prices for relatively simple watches equipped with inexpensive Swiss-made Ronda quartz movements, which are, in fact, assembled in a Detroit factory from Swiss-made components.
In an apparent answer to its critics, Shinola released its first diver’s watch and first automatic as a limited edition of 500 pieces in 2017. The new watch was called the “Lake Erie Monster” in accordance with Detroit’s location on the Great Lake and the legend of the oft-sighted but still at-large monster purportedly lurking in its murky depths. Last year, Shinola expanded the collection with a non-limited Monster dive watch for each of the freshwater seas. A few months ago, Shinola again broadened its undersea (lake?) offering with the Bronze Monster, a 300-meter water resistant Sellita SW200-1-powered, sapphire- and ceramic-equipped diver’s watch in an on-trend 43mm CuSn6 bronze case.
Having spent last winter working underwater beneath one of the Motor City’s less savory neighborhoods as a commercial diver, I have a beguiling soft spot for the city and jumped at the chance to review Shinola’s newest aquatic time-teller. Given Shinola’s history and my admittedly limited experience with the brand, I approached the review with some trepidation but decided to set Shinola’s past and marketing aside to let the Bronze Monster speak for itself, as it should, as a watch on my wrist.
SHINOLA MONSTER DIAL: LEGIBLE AND REFINED
Other than being offered in more colors, the Shinola Monster dial is, with good reason, little changed since its release in 2017, as it is a thoughtful, highly legible, and distinctive design. With an inky-black gloss enamel dial surface and applied rectangular indices inlaid heavily with Super-LumiNova, paired with tapered, rectangular, Super-LumiNova-coated hands and a seconds hand with an intriguing spade-shaped tip, the Bronze Monster’s dial is instantly recognizable and in keeping with Shinola’s design language across the collection. Dial text, which I generally dislike, is pleasantly minimal, with only Shinola’s signature and lightning bolt logo at 12 and “Automatic” in retro-futuristic text at 6 o’clock. Very cool.
A white-on-black date wheel sits just inside the low-key 4 o’clock position and doesn’t interrupt the dial design, instead sits back waiting to be needed as white-on-black date wheels do so well. It’s important to note here that nowhere on the Bronze Monster dial is there any claim of geographic identity or country of manufacture. Instead, at 6 o’clock on the dial’s perimeter, where you’d often find “Swiss Made” or the like, Shinola has simply printed “1000ft 300m,” keeping the overall design uncluttered while attempting not to further irritate the watch-buying public and FTC as its done in the past.
There are a few little nuggets in the Shinola dial for those who care to look. Namely, the twelve o’clock hour marker is shaped like the international alpha (diver down) nautical signal flag, typically used by commercial divers and the US Navy in conjunction with the more common red flag with a diagonal white stripe to indicate a diver’s presence below. The Monster’s minute hand, essential to dive timing for the select few who still do it with a watch, is especially long, with its lumed sections broken in two to further differentiate it from the much shorter hour hand, a nice touch on what is at least intended as a capable diving watch. Finally, the spade-shaped point on the seconds hand is well done and helps to give the dial an overall interesting and refined look, executed well even for the price. Overall, this is a clean dial with instant legibility and a luxurious level of attention to detail. Not to leave you guys in the dark (get it?), the lume is also excellent on the Monster’s dial and hands and lasts all night, even on five-hour dives in dark water.
THE 43MM CASE FOR BRONZE
In the last couple of years, as evidenced by releases from Tudor, Panerai, and others, bronze has been very much in vogue as a case material. Much loved for its ability to develop a patina over time, bronze ages either naturally on the wrist or by chemical means to create a rugged, custom look, individual to a particular watch and wrist. For those who prefer clean bronze, simple household chemicals can quickly remove patina to recreate a brand new look. Being a nautical kind of guy, I really enjoy the look of bronze. It reminds me of diving the Mk V helmet and shining shell casings in my early military days. As it patinates, the Shinola Monster’s case becomes richer in color and texture, adding interest day by day. If you’re the stare-at-your watch type, and you probably are if you’re here, watching bronze patinate is fun in a cheap-thrills kind of way. If you can’t wait for patina, there are simple means of speeding the patina along as readily available as a hard-boiled egg. Google away.
All this talk about bronze should not take away from the actual case shape of the Monster, which is excellent. At 43mm-wide and 15.6mm-thick, this is a large watch in keeping with its Monster name but a reasonable 51-millimeter lug-to-lug (my measurement) and a carefully sculpted case bottom (supposedly inspired by a boat’s hull) combine for extreme comfort and wearability, even on my small 6.25” wrist. Crown guards, always welcome on a diver’s watch, protect the easily-gripped, large-diameter screw-down crown, which is signed with Shinola’s lightning bolt. Crown action on the Monster really is excellent for winding and setting, and it screws down beautifully as well.
Just below the domed, interior AR-coated sapphire crystal, a unidirectional, 120-click rotating elapsed time bezel is also executed in bronze, complete with a charcoal-colored ceramic insert with raised bronze indices. The Bronze Monster’s bezel is easy to grab even with gloves on and features some of the better bezel action I’ve experienced. Matte ceramic as an insert material should promise a high degree of durability while also visually complementing both the glossy dial and brushed case surfaces. Raised bronze graduations on the bezel complete a three-dimensional and interesting overall look and ensure that the patina won’t stop at just the case.
SELLITA SW200-1, NOT EARTH SHATTERING, BUT SOLID
In or around this price point, we are more than likely to see a Swiss sports watch equipped with either the ETA 2824-2 or the Sellita SW200-1, both of which are dependable, durable, and nearly identical calibers from two of the largest Swiss houses of movement manufacture. While the original limited-edition Lake Erie Monster housed an Argomatic R-150 movement developed between Shinola and Swiss giant Ronda AG, Shinola’s Bronze Monster depends on the more pedestrian Sellita SW200-1 for timekeeping purposes. Even though the SW200-1 isn’t necessarily sexy, it is a rock-solid, proven, and accurate time-teller that makes perfect sense in a watch marketed toward the diving crowd. We at ABTW have already gone into much depth on this movement here, but the short version is that the SW200-1 is a 24 jewel, 38-hour reserve, automatic time and date caliber which beats at a near-standard 28,800vph. My Bronze Monster has kept excellent time at right around plus four seconds a day when worn, which is great time-keeping, no matter who made the watch.
U.S.-SOURCED LEATHER AND KHAKI ZULU STRAPS
Shinola is perhaps as well known for its straps as it is for its watches, often utilizing U.S.-sourced leather from brands such as Horween in Chicago, as well as U.S.-produced rubber from Stern Rubber Company in Staples, Minnesota. The Bronze Monster’s included brown leather strap, while not affiliated with the aforementioned brands, is still produced in the U.S. from “premium teak-leather” and has a distressed look and soft feel on the wrist. It’s incredibly soft and feels broken-in after about two hours of wear. For the spring-bar-tool-challenged, the leather strap has a little quick-release lever at the lugs for tool-free strap removal. In short, this leather strap complements the bronze case on the Monster really well and is comfortable. A bronze-plated buckle finishes off the look. My one quibble with this strap is that the second keeper stretches out quite easily, slides off the end of the strap, and has to be put back in place throughout the day. Not a big deal, but maybe a deal.
Of course, a leather strap doesn’t make any sense on a watch designed for aquatic use (don’t get me started), but Shinola is way ahead of us and has also provided a khaki-colored five-ring zulu strap (which they call a G10, for no reason) with matching bronze hardware. With the spring bars on the leather strap built into its quick-release system, Shinola has had to include a set in the box for wearers who want to rock the nylon strap. Once set up, it’s a decent zulu strap, though it does make the already tall watch sit up a bit taller on the wrist (especially on my small 6.25” wrist.)  Minor gripes aside, it’s nice of Shinola to include two wearing options and at least the zulu hardware matches. I’d personally love to see a rubber strap in the package, but I’m getting greedy.
Frankly, Shinola’s Bronze Monster is a lot nicer than I expected it to be in look, feel, and timekeeping. While it’s not inexpensive for what it is, it’s just about as good as the more expensive Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition (and has better lume), and it doesn’t look or feel all that much less refined than the excellent and much more expensive Tudor Black Bay Bronze, though that watch, indeed is equipped with an in-house-caliber. For lovers of bronze diving watches, especially those with a soft spot for U.S. assembly, if not complete manufacture, Shinola’s maiden bronze release presents an interesting and truly different-looking design compared with many other choices of both lesser and greater cost. Further, the Bronze Monster demonstrates an intent from Shinola to push past its previous mass-market offerings to compete in the actual premium watch space. While its initial attempts at returning watch manufacture to the U.S. were imperfect, the brand has refined its messaging to more accurately demonstrate how “American” its products are. If the Bronze Monster is any indication of what Shinola is now capable of or interested in, I for one am excited to see what’s next out of Detroit. The Bronze Monster is available from shinola.com for $1650.
Necessary Data
Brand: Shinola Model: Bronze Monster Price: $1650US Size: 43mm x 51mm  x 15.6mm Would the reviewer personally wear it: Yes. It’s a distinctive, high-quality bronze diver with at least some U.S. roots. Friend we’d recommend it to first: Most patriotic bronze-curious diver’s watch fan I know. Best characteristic of watch: The bronze case is perfectly executed with a comfortable and visually interesting shape. Worst characteristic of watch: I wish the watch came with a U.S.-made rubber strap as other Monster models do, but I understand why they went with leather.
Farmhouse Sink – Tradition Meets Technology
Clean, smooth lines of this under-mount sink blend naturally with the counter-tops. Antique-finished fixtures complete the old-fashioned look.
A farmhouse sink, also known as an apron or apron-front sink, is deep, wide and stylish. Using the latest materials they combine timeless charm with the latest fixtures. Keeping up with the hottest trend in interior design choose a model that’s right for your Waukesha area home. These basins are usually deeper and wider than a traditional sink. The apron portion flows over the edge of the counter-top for added style. Your choices come in an assortment of materials including:
Porcelain enameled cast iron
Stainless steel
Copper – hammered and smooth
Natural stone
Fireclay
A creation of the past, these sinks are designed to accommodate chores often rare today – scrubbing large pots, washing clothes and even bathing children. A sink of this style is meant to be a dramatic focal point as well as an everyday workhorse.
There are two basic designs:
Top-mount styles – also known as “drop-ins” these are usually less expensive and easier to install but don’t reflect the overall look of the other option. Attention to sealing the edge of the sink where it meets the counter is critical.
Undermount installations – as the name suggests the sink nestles under the edge of the counter-top, not on top of it. Undermount installations create a seamless blend of sink and counter. Ideal for really custom installation. Cabinetry must be adjusted to accommodate most installations – these sinks require custom cutouts. In addition, the sinks themselves are heavy and filled can weigh as much as 300 pounds.
Either option is available in several sizes – from 20- to expansive 60-inch versions. They come in both single- and double-bowl configurations.
Design, Installation Options
Copper is one of the most popular choices for this country-style sink. Note the smaller cabinet doors beneath the sink’s apron – a sink like this requires remodeling the counter and cabinets.
While you can drop a new sink in place or create a special space for it, you have to take care with fixtures. Farmhouse-style installations do not have faucet holes or a deck for mounting faucets. Fixtures must be installed behind the sink or on the wall. Before deciding on a farmhouse style evaluate all the remodeling demands and style options:
Deck-mounted faucets – require enough space between the sink and backsplash for access and cleaning.
Wall-mounted options – excellent options to preserve counter space where kitchen design allows.
Faucets with pull-down or side spray features are convenient, especially for reaching distant corners.
Farmhouse Sink Material Choices
A hundred years ago sinks came in just one material. Today you have options, including:
Cast Iron – the oldest material used for kitchen sinks, it’s usually coated with a hard layer of porcelain. Smooth, glossy finish usually in white but available in colors, too. Very low maintenance and easy to clean.
Stainless Steel – common for traditional undermount, drop-in sinks usually with a smooth, matte finish. Available with an assortment of apron designs. These offer a more modern look in a farmhouse setting. Stainless steel resists chipping and cracking as well as stains. Requires special cleaners but otherwise very little maintenance.
Copper sinks – copper’s natural appeal in either smooth or hammered textures add elegance and individuality to a new kitchen. Easily recognized copper color changes – called patina – over time. The antimicrobial properties of copper naturally kill bacteria. Requires specialized cleaners so maintenance is a bit more extensive than some materials.
Natural Stone – typically granite, marble or travertine natural stone is available in a variety of colors. No two sinks are exactly alike. Like copper, they are available in smooth or textured finishes.
Fireclay – this is the most common material used for firehouse sinks today. Commonly available in white, biscuit, black and shades of gray, beige and blue. Resists rust and fading. Very low maintenance and easy to clean. Fireclay is a type of clay used in ceramics and fired at extreme temperatures. The clay and glaze make the sink extremely durable. Similar to porcelain in looks but stronger.
