Hi!!! I'm a big fan of BLs, I really love all types, but I stopped watching and keeping up with the news ones around the summer of 2023. Do you have any recommendations of BLs that I should start with again that have come out since spring 2023. Or like a best of 2024 list? It's a bit overwhelming trying to jump back in and I'm not sure where to start again! Thanks :)
My top 2 BLs of 2023 both got 10/10s from me and they were:
I Cannot Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai
Japan Netflix?
This classic friends-to-lovers BL is everything Japan does best. Angsty. Emo. Aching. Driven by real thirst. Yamato is deeply in love with his childhood bestie, Kakeru, and has been for ages, unable to hide his ungainly damaging high school need. He wants Kakeru in every way possible and it oozes off of the screen. Kakeru is silly and a little simple, but not frenetic or overly camp about it. He is earnest, and genuinely wants to keep Yamato in his life which means giving a romance (and gayness) a fair chance. We watch him realize his affection and what form it can take in a truly authentic way. This show was impossibly kind to both of its lead characters and I felt almost honored that I got to watch something so lovely and rare play out on my screen. Full review here.
Our Dating Sim
Korea Viki
This is a perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy. I adored every aspect from the casting to the pristinely simple premise to the quietly smooth execution. Sure it’s low stakes, but that makes it high domesticity and extremely warm and gentle. This is a fuzzy blanket of a story - a cozy BL. It lives in my rewatch pile and you know what’s best about it? Every single episode is in that pile. There’s no skipping with this one, it might be good natured and calmly sweet but it’s tight and the pacing is excellent. Full review here.
Here are the rest of my best of 2023 round ups:
Best of 2024?
I haven't started any 2024 round ups yet but here's my current working top BLs of 2024. These are the ones I gave a 9/10 (no 10/10s from me this year, sadly):
Century of Love
Thai Gaga
This is a very pretty drama about a young man who fell in love with a nice girl 100 years ago, and when she died in his arms, he was cursed to live until he could meet her reborn self. Only this time around, she’s reborn into the body of a man. Or is she?
Cherry Magic (Thai remake)
Thai grey
A soft charming warm hug of a show about crushes and mind reading and self worth that really worked for me. With no-fuss execution from a consummate team (at GMMTV) and an OG lead pair (proving why they remain eternal and deserve to grow up). Look, here’s the thing, Cherry Magic is a great Thai BL in its own right - not comparing it to any other iteration.
Cosmetic Playlover
Japan Gaga
I love this little show more than most. It's a classic office BL about the older workaholic who loves his job and the younger upstart who unexpectedly loves his boss.
Love For Love's Sake
Korea iQIYI
KBL isekai about a man who must win a game by convincing a reserved teen outcast to fall in love with him. Of course, that teen represents himself and his own unhappiness.
Sugar Dog Life
Japan grey
This is a phenomenally charming and adorable little romance about a forlorn university kid and the police officer who adopts him. They are relentlessly kind to each other, in fact it’s an extremely kindly show over all (everyone in it is so nice to everyone else including us) so there’s very little tension. But what it lacks in drive and complexity it makes up for in earnest acts of service and simple affection.
The Rebound
Thai iQIYI
Actually no one liked this as much as me. This was a sports romance Thai BL pulp with everything I could have asked for given this sub genre. More, actually, since MeenPing are both great basketball players and the team component really did form part of the connective tissue of the show (vital in a sports romance). Meen has his shirt off within the first two minutes which is all I needed but he's still pretty great as the sullen secret keeper against Ping's cheerful survivor - childhood sweethearts torn asunder and now reunited.
The Sign
Thai YouTube
This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.
Unknown
Taiwan YouTube & elsewhere
Unknown is a wonderful BL with a pitch perfect portrayal of long term pining, age gap, and the stepbrothers trope. The acting and chemistry are ON POINT (especially from the leads) which made the resulting characters very believable.
Wandee Goodday
Thai YouTube
A charming quintessentially modern Thai BL about a doctor and a boxer who start as a one night stand and then fall in love. Great rep for everything from Muay Thai, to safe sex, to FUN sex, to ace, to bisexuality, to smiley kisses, to the first legal gay wedding in a Thai BL.
For me this was GMMTV's best of the year.
We Are
Thai iQIYI
I unabashedly loved show. It was slow to find its stride (I didn’t get into it until ep 6) but I’m so glad I gave it a chance. It’s a soft ensemble piece with multiple couples and very little plot, but I didn’t care because it’s not trying to be anything more substantial.
There you go. Hope these hold you over until the end of year round ups.
Welcome back!
And HAVE FUN!!!
It's been a good year for BL.

Ok I need a good sob fest. Can anyone recommend anything?
Until We Meet Again and 1000 Stars really got me nearly every episode so I’m looking for something like that.
The Spirealm was the last really good drama I watched and honestly just have felt so empty since I finished it.
I just need those emotions out right now.

Hi Ben!
So, I'm currently working on catching up to several of the qls I've missed out on in the past 3-4 months or so in addition to the exploring indian queer media series I'm starting, and that includes watching Taiwanese bls for the first time.
But, I'm having trouble deciding which ones to watch first and which ones to shelve for later, so I'm asking you to pick for me!
I've mainly got 4 shows on my list- We Best Love, My Tooth Your Love, Kiseki: Dear to Me and Unknown. I'm planning on watching 2 of them now and keeping the others for later.
So, I'll be watching whichever two that you pick, and saving the others for later. I'm going to get around to watching them all eventually, it's just a matter of which I watch first.
Oh, and if there's a different Taiwanese bl you think I should start with, I'm open to anything. Thanks for the help!
Hello! I feel woefully deficient when it comes to Indian queer cinema. Offhand I can only recall Loev (2015) and Margarita With a Straw (2014). Please share some of your favorites!
I think what's a lot of fun about your request is that three of the shows you presented as options were directed by Ray Jiang (We Best Love, My Tooth Your Love, and Unknown). Lin Pei Yu wrote Kiseki: Dear to Me and We Best Love.
I don't think I'd recommend Kiseki: Dear to Me because it was fun as a live watch for all the crack, but it's mess of a show. It also reopened an old wound and pissed me off.
Similarly, I think We Best Love has great performances in it not supporting by the cleanest structure if we're only recommending two shows.
So, I recommend My Tooth Your Love and Unknown as your two shows to watch. I think My Tooth Your Love has solid character writing, and includes some of my favorite camerawork in the genre.
Likewise, Unknown is a solid adaptation of a mainland Chinese novel with good writing around the family dynamics and changes they face. I have strong notes about where it faltered in the end, but it's a really solid production.
Let me know what you think when you watch them!

Do you have favorite BL dramas or movies? If you do, what's your top 20 Asian BL dramas or movies?
Hi anon! 💙 Thank you for this ask! I can make a list! I love it 🥰
Of course I have favorites and I am so thankful you ask for my 20 favorite bls, because 10 would be too hard 😅
I don't have any logical reason behind my choices. Most of the times I go with the feeling I have while watching the show. The following is not a best to last ranking, just my top 20 favorite shows 😊
Goodbye Mother
A vietnamese movie about a young man, Van, who visits his family for the first time after being abroad for nine years. He doesn't come alone, but brings his boyfriend Ian with him. Van waits for the best moment to come out to his family and present Ian as his partner. It is more of a family drama than the typical bl, but it is such a good movie. The grandmother is the heart and soul of it all. It provides everything, happiness, sadness, anger, pain, love...just a perfect movie. It is still available on GagaOOLala, but on the list to leave soon.
A Tale Of Thousand Stars
One of my feel-good-series. EarthMix is one of my favorite pairing and they went crazy with all the staring and pining. The story of Tian and Phupha who meet at a village in the forest where Tian works as a volunteer teacher and Phupha is the local Chief Forest Officer. We whitness how two people get to know each other, understand each other and develop feelings for each other. It is a romantic fairytale dealing with important and serious issues and I love it! You can watch it free on Youtube.
Moonlight Chicken
Speaking of EarthMix...Moonlight Chicken is my newest favorite and one of the easiest decisions for picking as a favorite. It is a short series, but it tells so many stories in a perfect way. No character comes too short, no realtionship is undeveloped. It is such a perfect series. EarthMix are killing it, but GeminiFourth stole the show. Their depiction of a this first love between a deaf young man and an angry young man was just so beautiful. Both had their dreams and both felt unheard and unseen from the outside (especially the parents and guardians) and they developed such a pure and beautiful bond. I could go on and on about the beauty of this show. Perfect and free to watch on Youtube.
My School President
And another GeminiFourth project. I am so in love with this show. It is something personal. The story about a first love and such a healthy love and Tin, our school president is one walking green flag. The show helped me on a very personal level to understand parts of my own history and choices and I am forever grateful and will keep this in my heart. And besides that it is such a comfort watch. Every conflict is dealt with before the episodes end and there is no drama, just love and respect. I love it! It is also free on Youtube.
Triage
This is something else. We have time loops and some supernatural stuff happening while the main character tries to rescue this young man who is as it turns out the love of his life. And when it looks like it finally can work out, destiny or in this case a higher entity, plays a little bit with time and fucks everyting up again. It is really interesting and tense and there are twists and it is just amazing!
The Untamed
Does this count as a bl? It is not the typical bl, more a censored adaptation of same-sex original work from China. Nevertheless you can see the love and affection between Lan Zhan and Wei Ying. This is a masterpiece. When I tell people about it, who don't watch asian dramas, I always tell them it is better than Game of Thrones for me, so they can put it in relation. This show wrecked me. I cried like never before. And I can't put into words what this series made me feel. It is on Viki and WeTV.
180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us
Speaking of non typical bls stuff. 180 degree is such a good series. It is difficult to watch, because it feels really raw at parts and it deals with so much stuff, like homophobia, grief, internal homophobia, trauma, loss, love different kinds of relationship, growing up and stagnation, resignation. And the cinematography, uuuhhh! Such a beautiful series and in everything you see on screen you can intepret something in it. As a person who studied language and the comparison between novels and their adaptations, this was heaven for my intepretation loving heart. You can watch it on GagaOOLala.
A First Love Story
Strongberry at its best. It is korean and a short film in two parts and perfect. It tells the story of two best friends who have feelings for each other, but one of them enlisted and has to go to the military soon. We meet them again after some time and get a very intimate view on a very short part of their lifes. The acting is good, the story is good, the chemistry is good. You can watch it on Youtube or soon it will be on GagaOOLala again.
Be Loved in House: I Do
My comfort watch. This is nothing special. It is just a workplace romance, but it feels so cozy and I love the story. It makes me feel all the butterflies and happiness in my stomach and I love this shit! The company gets a new boss, who is very strict, has a bunch of rules and forbids his co-workers to date, because love can be a distraction and because of his own personal trauma. Can his stone-cold heart be warmed-up again? Oh the cuddles are everything for me! It is on Viki.
History 2: Crossing the line
I like most of the HIStory shows, but tis one I like the most. I do love the secondary couple of HIStory 3: Make our days count and HIStory 4: Close to you (I know...don't judge me), but as a whole series I really like this one the most. Perhaps because it is something different with the whole Volleyball thing or because I think the main couple is just so sweet. I don't know, I like to rewatch it from time to time. You can watch it on Viki.
Bad Buddy
My first asian bl ever. I am so happy I could start with this one. I love the story of Pat and Pran. Enemies to lovers is something else and they did a really good job. And their love was so vulnerable and sweet. Even though Pat always tried to be the strong kind of macho man, he was soft and sweet with Pran and it was so cute to watch. And the iconic rooftop scene! What a scene! It is free on Youtube.
Long Time No See
Another movie. I don't want to spoil anything. This has assasins and mafia and love and romance and sweetness and blood and fighting. It is not the typical bl stuff, it is more mature, but a really good action movie in my eyes. I liked the drama and the action scenes. As it is leaving GagaOOLala soon, I just rewatched it and it is still good!
Semantic Error
I don't know how many times I rewatched this one. The enemies to lovers story that just melts my heart. I am reading the manhwa and this is so explicit! The series is so tuned down from the original. Nevertheless I love the story of how SangWoo made his way into JaeYoungs heart and melted our all hearts on the way. This one is on Viki.
Old Fashion Cupcake
The story of the 29 years old Togawa who tries to show 39 years old Nozue how beautiful life can be. And what better way to show him than to eat the most delicious sweets ever. I am always hungry and craving for sweets after watching this. This series gives hope. You are never too old to start enjoying life and to allow yourself to love again, even if the person is ten years younger. And another one you can watch on Viki.
Love Mechanics
I guess this is here because of YinWar. I mean, their chemistry is through the roof! The story itself...well...cheating and pain and War is crying quite often. But it is still good and I can't stop rewatching it. Yes the story is hurtful and a little bit stupid, but VeeMark are adorable when they are happy and in love. It can be watched on WeTV.
DNA Says Love You
We all love some slow burn, right? I mean, this one is very much slow burning, but with a reason and it is a really interesting story behind all that. It is a complex story with some really good staring and pining and hurt and comfort. You have to watch carefully to understand everything, but it is worth it and the wait while our hearts burn away through the slow burn is worth it too.
Gaya Sa Pelikula (Like in the movies)
This one is...it is cute. I don't know what else to say. It is not the best production, but the story is good and the actors are doing a good job. Karl needs to live on his own because a family tradition says it is a good idea to show early on how to survive alone in this world. So he moves into his uncle's apartment where he meets his neighbour Vlad and because of some reasons the end up living together. I love the soundtrack and their whole story. It is free on Youtube.
Once Again
My favorite bl series of 2022. It tells the story of Shin Jae Woo who deals with childhood trauma and because of some supernatural stuff happening, he jumps back in time to the year he was almost the victime of a crime, but Kang Ji Hoon helped him back then. JaeWoo wants to rescue JiHoon from this path. I was crying through most of the second half of this series. It is just so good. Painful and hurtful. Just watch is you can deal with sad stuff. Everytime I need a good cry, I come back here and it always works its magic. It si on Viki and GagaOOLala.
We best love: No. 1 for you
The true enemies to lovers story. The slow burn and the slow realisation is just so perfect. I feel with Gao Shi De through this whole story. I love to rewtach it and see things I haven't before. And the second season is good as well! Not as good as the first one for me, but still really good. You can watch it on WeTV.
Secret Crush On You
If you manage to get past the first episode full of cringe and you learn things about the characters, you see that these are all of us. The characters are not flawless, they make us cringe, because it feels too real. You can't act normal when you are living your secret crush. And you feel uncomfortable if you don't fit the norms. It is so beautiful to see that there are people out there who love you for who you are. And who isn't afraid to tell the world about it. This series makes my heart feel all the beautiful feelings. It is a little gem out there. And you can watch it for free on youtube.
Well these are my top 20 of all the bls I have watched. It was so much fun! Thank you for this ask!
I guess after this month there are going to be new favorites. Our Dating Sim or A Shoulder To Cry On are some really good shows and I hope they won't mess it up in the end like Oh! My Assistent did.
Have a beautiful day and stay happy and healthy! 💜

Hi P’ABL, building off an earlier ask you answered, what are your top recommendations if I want to watch a BL where the main focus is the romance between two characters? Something along the lines of Semantic Error for example? Or even Old Fashioned cupcake?
Hum, you mean where there is little to no outside plots, external pressure, or secondary characters? Most KBLs are pretty closed systems but they of have external pressures. Lemme think... there are shorts of course. Okay I did a ratings sort and then just read through my favorites with this in mind... this is pretty darn subjective tho.
BLs that are just simple sweet romances
High School Setting
I Cannot Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan 2023) - a very simple friends to lovers romance.
HIStory 2: Crossing the Line (Taiwan 2018) - classic sports romance
My School President (Thailand 2023) - the high school version of soft boys being soft, there's a side "plot" and a band but who cares?
About Youth (Taiwan 2022)
University Setting
Semantic Error (Korea 2022) - asker chose this as their primary example.
A Breeze of Love (Korea 2023) - reunion romance
A First Love Story (Korea 2021) - 2 part short that is exactly what you want.
Oxygen the series (Thailand 2020) - the university version of soft boys being soft, this one is a hyung with the young rich boy chasing the older orphan
We Best Love (Taiwan 20210 - part one is enemies to lovers, part 2 is office reunion enemies to lovers 2nd chance.
2gether (Thailand 2020) - oh the pining ridiculousness
Star in My Mind Star and Sky (Thailand 2022)
Hidden Agenda (Thailand 2023) - that isn't hidden at all
Love By Chance (Thailand 2018) - watch for AePete and TinCan but don't bother with the other threads
Why R U? (Thai 2020) - I mean it's madness but there is no other plot but the romances
Why R U? (Korean adaptation of Thai original) (Korea 2023)
2 Moons 2 is kinda the same thing, but I don't rate it as high as the Why R U?s. There are many who would call me crazy for this.
I thought about including the Love Class series but both of them have stalking sub plots. And I'm inferring you don't want any darkness or stress at all.
Office Romances
Old Fashion Cupcake (Japan 2022) - asker chose this as a second example, although I would call it a bit more complex given the themes of self discovery and worth.
Our Dating Sim (Korea 2023) - basically a reunion romance (second chance) but there is a bit of work stuff.
Be Loved In House: I Do (Taiwan 2021) - office romance, it's Taiwan so like We Best Love it'll be a little chaotic but I think it's what you're looking for.
Love is Science? BL Cut (Taiwan 2021) - the gays are the side couple there is a noona romance lead and a mature romance side, everything soft romance all day long.
Step By Step (Thailand 2023) - pretty classic office romance, Korea's version is called The New Employee and is also good but there is a lot more about the actual job as part of the plot.
Love Mate (Korea 2023) - aggressive pursuit from the new intern but it's a Kdrama so its ultimately soft...
Roommates of Poongduck 304 (Korea 2022) - cohabitation and office enemies to lovers
Foodie Romances
Bon Appetit (Korea 2023) - reunion romance
The Tasty Florida (Korea 2021) - love at first sight
What Zabb Man! (Thailand 2022) - he knows him by the taste of that one dish!
You Are Ma Boy (Vietnam 2021) - had to throw in something from Vietnam
Countryside Setting
Love Tractor (Korea 2023) - city boy meets country boy, they fall in love, opposites attract
A Tale of Thousand Stars (Thailand 2021) - okay this does have lots of extra characters and some complexity because it's GMMTV and Thailand but it is the most classic "romance" that Thailand has ever done gay. Kissing on cliffs at sunset and parting at airports and everything.
Some More (Korea 2018) - another great short that meets your criteria
Okay I think that's it, if you want to give more restrictions I could tailor the list down more.

@lurkingshan Thank you so much for your answer! Like I said, you always make me think about these shows critically and reflectively, and by looking over your response it clarified for me what I would ideally like to have seen from the show in terms of the wealth disparity themes. I feel like my ideal differs a little from yours but is similar on a fair few points - I don't think a wealth redistribution narrative was ever going to happen with this show, but given the way Home's own death-adjacent experience played out with him hearing ghosts and his history of naivety and wilful blindness and deafness, as well as the themes of found family and community, I do think there was meat to chew on in the idea of Home needing to learn to listen and to centre the people he hurt (including and especially Peach and Pang). There's already a thread there of him learning to listen to the people his family affected and to implement changes based on their needs. I just feel like there's more they could have done to make the people under his family's influence his community as well. And that is something they could still put into the final episode, but even if they do I'd have been more satisfied if the narrative had given proper space to the voices of the people he hurt (to really drive home the link to the ghosts) and not bent itself around him to remind us that Home himself is a good guy even if he has fucked up. I definitely would have liked to see Peach's feelings about Home killing him explored more. Especially since they were so conflicted, and Tay Tawan is so good with that kind of complexity. And thank you for the recommendations!! I've watched 3 Will Be Free, Laws of Attraction and My Ride and loved them, and I've been meaning to get to We Best Love for ages. I'd heard of DBK but haven't watched it yet. It will be fun to see some early TayNew and compare it to how they've developed as actors. I haven't watched much in the way of KBL at all and I'm very happy to have a shortlist to start from! Thank you again for the thought-provoking discussion and the recs.
Hi Shan
I've been watching your commentary on Peaceful Property with regard to its mishandling of its class conflict themes and I have to admit that I'm coming to agree with you on it.
I had to basically go "Welp, I can't see how they get out of the mess they've made now - I guess I just have to give them a pass on the grounds of found family?" in order to keep enjoying the show, which did let me do that but also left a bit of an icky taste in my mouth.
So I guess I wanted to ask - do you think there's a way they could have handled the wealth disparity and classism issues more gracefully within the show's narrative? And also whether there are any QLs you would recommend that do handle the topic to your satisfaction? I could use something good to watch!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel like you always make me consider topics more deeply and reflectively, even when I don't agree with you.
Hi, thanks for dropping in! I feel you on this, and I want to be clear that my criticism of the show is not criticism of people who still like it despite these failures. If you have still been able to connect to the friendship and family themes without this getting in the way, that's great and I'm glad for you. Just because the show is doing one thing very poorly doesn't mean there's nothing of value in it.
That said, you're right, they've passed the point of no return on their missteps with the class disparity themes. Early on in the show, after several episodes in a row of ghost stories involving poor or working class folks harmed by Home's wealthy real estate developer family on top of the class disparity between Home and Peach/Pang, I said I was confident that the show had something to say about this issue. And that was true! Unfortunately, what it had to say was garbage.
To your first question, I actually think it would have been very easy for the show to handle the wealth disparity and classism issues more gracefully, and that's a big part of my frustration. They had all the ingredients--a family history of exploitation, a ghost busting team including working class folks to shed light on the family's sins, and an ignorant grandson uncovering wrongdoing case by case and learning that there was always a price for his privilege. All the show needed to do was allow Home to come to some natural realizations about his family's treatment of others, via both the ghost case work and his relationship with Peach and Pang, and then use the power and resources he has to take accountability in the form of restitution and reparations to the people and communities they harmed. My ideal story line based on what they set up in the first half of the show would have had Home setting out to right his family's wrongs and take real steps to restore the communities they harmed. Even if a full on wealth redistribution narrative was too much to hope for, at the very least Home should have been made to reckon with what his family did and set out to do better in the future, both by Peach and Pang and by his family's countless victims (including Kan).
But that's not what we got. Instead, the narrative tried to sell us on the idea that none of this is anyone's fault, and that any harm that came to people at this family's hands was the result of a "curse" or one bad apple's wrongdoing. Instead of saying anything meaningful about systemic inequality and the responsibility of the wealthy and powerful to avoid extractive and exploitative practices, they painted Home's Gramps and family corporation as benevolent, concluding that they destroyed a bunch of people's lives by accident and without intent or even knowledge. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how utterly absurd and insulting that is. On top of all that, despite Home being the one with the most power in this little friend family and making some very serious mistakes that caused harm to the others, the show consistently centered him and his feelings in all conflicts, including Peach's near death and the death of Kan's father and destruction of her community. It also ignored the very real stakes it set up for Peach and Pang's dire financial situation whenever the plot demanded. The second half of the show became all about the poor people Home and his family have harmed forgiving him without any accountability because they felt guilty he was sad, and then those same people spending their time and energy fighting to save this rich family's reputation and livelihood. That's not me offering an interpretation, that is what literally happened on our screens!
So yeah, it was bad! It was clear weeks ago that it was not going in the right direction, but I understand holding out hope that they'd pull a rabbit out of a hat or look into the camera and say sike. But that ship has sailed at this point, and Peaceful Property becomes another in a pattern of GMMTV shows that try to incorporate class disparity in their narratives and get it very very wrong.
Which brings me to your second question: are there any QLs I recommend that do this better? Yes! Here is a short list for other Thai shows that have genuinely done this better:
Moonlight Chicken: not a class disparity narrative, but the only GMMTV show to date that has depicted working class people with full dignity and empathy
Dark Blue Kiss: the only GMMTV bl to tell a romance story that involves class conflict and not completely bungle it (snaps to TayNew for having another show that did better on this)
My Ride: a slow burn romance between a doctor and a motorcycle taxi driver that gets the way their class disparity would shape their relationship right
Love Sea: this one isn't perfect (I think the working class character in the pair gets too little narrative attention relative to his rich counterpart) but it does take the class disparity seriously and ensures it informs the relationship the whole way through
Laws of Attraction: don't laugh at me, I'm serious! This show is mostly absurd but the core narrative is all about class conflict, and it informs the romance quite thoroughly, too
The Loyal Pin: including this one on the word of @twig-tea because I haven't watched yet, but I understand it's dealing with class very directly in its core relationship (with the disclaimer that it still has two episodes to go so something could go sideways)
I'd also throw in some shows that aren't really about class disparity but do include it as part of the narrative background to inform characterization and plot like I Told Sunset About You, Love By Chance, Khun Chai, and 3 Will Be Free
Outside of Thailand, South Korea is always a safe bet for strong class disparity narratives, and in QL you'll find the best examples in Hwang Da Seul's works (Where Your Eyes Linger, Blueming, To My Star 2, and currently Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo). Japan and Taiwan actually don't do much of this, because most of their shows are about middle class and working people as a rule. Miseinen, a Japanese BL that just started airing, looks to be tackling a class disparity narrative, though, and doing it well so far (not a coincidence that the source material is from Korea). And We Best Love is a classic Taiwanese BL with a significant class disparity informing the romance conflict. Blue Canvas of Youthful Days is a currently airing Chinese BL that is doing a class disparity romance and has been killing it so far.
So there is my incredibly long answer to your questions! Thank you again for sending me this kind note; I'm so appreciative that we can chat about this stuff and still maintain our love for these shows. I hope you find some things you like on the rec list, as well. :)
#edited because i forgot to tag like an idiot#peaceful property#bl recommendations#also when i said a wealth redistribution narrative wasn't going to happen#i mean obvs it hasn't#but also on vibes it feels more like#the show wants to be about the rich taking care of their community#and hasn't hit that note in a way that satisfies me personally

Hi Ben!
I've been listening to the conversation pod and in one of the eps you mentioned that if any country was to adapt ITSAY you would like to give it to a well-funded Pinoy crew and it got me intrigued. I have only ever watched Gaya Sa Pelikula but I was quite impressed with that one. Could you recommend a couple of shows from the Philippines that you enjoyed and that you think are a good representative of this country's "flavour" of BL?
Thank you!
I absolutely will recommend Pinoy BL! The caveat I will give about my desire to see a Pinoy take on ITSAY is because of some of their films I enjoyed, particularly Isa Pa With Feelings (2019) and Whether the Weather is Fine (2021). I have been extremely impressed with Filipino cinema and know they have it in them.
Onto the recommendations!
Gameboys 1 & 2
The studio that I would love to see take on ITSAY is The IdeaFirst Company. They made this production in quarantine to keep the lights on and keep people paid. This is probably the best quarantine show of all of them that released in 2020 and 2021. Elijah Canlas is a monster talent, and it was so impressive to see Kokoy de Santos and Adrianna So keep up with him in a show that manages to be funny and dramatic about the experience of finding love in quarantine while your loved ones are dying around you. Elijah gives a gripping performance in Kalel, 15 (2019). It's currently available on Netflix with English subs. Season 2 is available on GagaOOlala in specific regions.
Boys Lockdown
I remain forever sad that we won't finish this, but this is another one that tackled the quarantine experience well and captured the kind of chemistry that I find really compelling with Pinoy teams. I think at their best they compete or beat Taiwan. This one is available on YouTube.
Rainbow Prince
Filipino teams are ambitious, and that is always clear with Oxin Films. Is this show good? Not exactly. But it's exactly what it's trying to be and is so funny. It is the first BL musical and it delivers as such. It's this kind of gumption that makes me want to see a well-funded team tackle ITSAY, because this show is so much fun and I listen to the soundtrack regularly. This is available on YouTube.
Those are my best recommendations to get a sense of it, but I'll also shout out the Ride or Die team that did Quaranthings and Stuck On You, which both had compelling characerizations in lockdown.
