via Today Bharat nbsp; New Delhi: A potential split threatens the Congress after speculation that Rahul Gandhi could return at the helm. A debate is raging on ways to rid the party of its ldquo;dynasty tagrdquo;. Some young leaders are convinced that if Rahul leads it in the 2024 general election, it would spell another electoral washout as he ldquo;is no matchrdquo; for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several have come out and suggested measures for the party to regain its rhythm, but ldquo;inaction at all levelsrdquo; have left them disheartened. nbsp; Earlier this week, former MP Sandeep Dikshit said there were ldquo;six to eightrdquo; people capable of leading the party. He attacked senior leaders by saying ldquo;sometimes you want inaction because you donrsquo;t want a certain action to happenrdquo;. Many feel that Rahul is surrounded by ldquo;unelectable leaders who want him back because thatrsquo;s how they can be in powerrdquo;. Party leaders who have either lost election or have not fought or are hankering for a Rajya Sabha nomination are floating his name to keep themselves relevant, sources say. Former Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, who was sulking during the election, wants Rahul back as party chief. The situation is so bad, sources say, that several state leaders have started looking at other options. ldquo;The time is not ripe for Mr Gandhi to take over,rdquo; a state leader said. ldquo;It would be better that he takes a backseat and a new face emerges, who can take on the BJP with a new narrative.rdquo; He wondered that if Rahul wanted to return, then why did he leave in such a hurry when the entire party wanted him to continue. Even with no position his views are mostly against what the party is doing. Insiders claim he was against the post-poll alliance in Maharashtra with the Shiv Sena. Also, during the Haryana assembly poll, his proteacute;geacute; Ashok Tanwar, who was removed as Haryana unit chief and eventually resigned, was creating trouble for the party. Many leaders claimed after the 2019 Lok Sabha debacle several candidates in assembly elections are not keen for Rahul to campaign for them. The other grievance is that Rahulrsquo;s office is full of ldquo;left-leaning NGO people with little ground-level experiencerdquo;. Earlier, former Congress leaders Jagdambika Pal and Hemanta Biswa Sarma (both now with the BJP) claimed it was impossible to get an appointment; and even when one was given, the feedback given to him went ldquo;against the grassroots leadersrdquo;. After Sonia Gandhi took charge, there have four Assembly polls mdash; Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi. The Congress is in power in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, and has increased its tally in Haryana. It is also argued that the party won Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in 2018 only because of strong state leaders. The pressure within the party is at an all-time high. nbsp;

New Delhi/Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], Dec 10 (ANI): As the Opposition parties are all set to hold a crucial meeting on the eve of Parliament's Winter Session and counting of votes for Assembly elections in five states, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed to remain unaffected. The BJP has maintained confidence by saying that despite the Opposition meet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is again going to retain the post with a clear majority in the upcoming 2019 General Elections. Speaking to ANI, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said, "No matter how much the Opposition unites and makes Mahagathbandhan but the fact will remain intact that in 2019, Narendra Modi ji is going to retain the post of Prime Minister again with a clear majority. The BJP will regain power in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan with their own strength." Echoing the similar sentiments, BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said that it would be great if the 'Mahagathbandhan' (grand alliance) also announces their Prime Minister candidate for the 2019 General Elections. He said, "It's good that they are trying hard for Mahagathbandhan. It will be better if they decide that who will be the next Prime Minister from this grand alliance." Today's meeting in Delhi has been called by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, aimed at bringing all Opposition parties under a single umbrella to take on the BJP in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Chandrababu Naidu has recently ended his decades-long rivalry with the Congress. Ahead of the decisive meeting of the Opposition parties with an aim to build an anti-BJP front, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and Tamil Nadu leader of Opposition, MK Stalin, yesterday met and wished United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on her 72nd birthday. Stalin also discussed a range of issues including poll strategies for 2019 Lok Sabha elections and Mekadatu project of Congress-JD(S)-ruled Karnataka government, which is drawing flak from Tamil Nadu. Last month, the farmers' protest in the national capital brought Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the same stage for the very first time. Chandrababu Naidu has already met a string of opposition leaders including Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal over the last few weeks. Opposition leaders like West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief (TMC) Mamata Banerjee, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, DMK's MK Stalin, Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and others are likely to attend the meeting. Opinion: Will Congress's fortune see a turnaround in 2018?
If today’s electoral outcomes were not to impact tomorrow’s, they would be dealt with as standalone and transient phenomena. But because the results have a roll-over effect in varying measure, they get analysed threadbare — and with some hair-splitting added. Both the winner and loser has lessons to learn, and the one who imbibes them better stands the greater chance to stand high on the podium in the coming days. And so, the verdict on the political contests of 2017 can be a determinant for 2018 as well.
Two crucial elections happened in 2017, and while the end result was the same, the messages the electorate delivered were very different and the level of endorsement varied. That one of these confrontations took place early in the year and the other later as 2017 came near to a close, helped in establishing a ‘beginning and end’ narrative. Except that every start is a new beginning and every end is the harbinger of a new beginning. It’s this belief that keeps political parties going, losing steam one moment, gaining it the next. Of course, the one which recoups its losses the earliest stand the better chance of breasting the tape.
The BJP began 2017 with a bang and the Congress with a whimper.
The former swept the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election with a margin that even its staunchest admirers had not reckoned with. The Congress, which had tagged along with the Samajwadi Party, came to a cropper. There can be endless debate on whether the Congress sunk the Samajwadi Party or the reverse happened.
With 80 Lok Sabha and 400 plus Assembly seats, Uttar Pradesh has often been the bellwether State. Parties that perform poorly here cannot hope to rule the country. Having won 71 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 on its own, the BJP had the difficult task to live up to the high level. The general sense during the Assembly poll campaigning had been that the party would return to power after nearly two decades in exile, but nobody saw the massive margin of victory coming. The wave flattened the Samajwadi Party, decimated the Bahujan Samaj Party and obliterated the Congress.
The messages were the following: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charisma was intact (he was the star campaigner for the BJP); the split in the Samajwadi Party as the result of a family feud had taken its toll on the party; the politics of appeasement does not work; talk of good governance still sells; caste considerations, while still relevant and on which both the Samajwadi Party and the BSP heavily rely on, now have limited appeal; and, the party which manages its macro as well as micro election strategies more smartly, using both manpower and technology, has the greater chance of victory.
The outcome of the Uttar Pradesh election threw up a dilemma for the Congress: Should it continue with the tactic of over-relying on strong local leaders or fire up its own local leadership to lead the battle?
By the time the Gujarat Assembly election came only months after the Uttar Pradesh poll, the Congress was still unsure on this front. For the first time in two decades, it sensed a chance to oust the BJP in the State, and yet there was also a feeling of diffidence. This led to its over-dependence on three young caste warriors whose affiliation to the Congress was tentative and their desire to align with that party was motivated by the prospect of little more than an immediate gain.
It cannot be denied that they - Mevani, Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakore- impacted the final tally to an extent, reducing the BJP’s number as compared to the 2012 figure and bettering the Congress’s. But that impact was less than expected, since the BJP did succeed in containing the damage caused by the migration of a section of the Patidar community to the Congress camp. It did appear that, as in the case of Uttar Pradesh, the Congress had placed all its eggs in the basket of local leaders from outside the party.
It needs to be remembered that the BJP had been as weakened in Uttar Pradesh over the two decades preceding 2014 as the Congress had been. But while the BJP continued to work on its core strengths and weaknesses in the State, the Congress flirted with both the Samajwadi Party and the BSP in a desperate bid to regain influence.
In Gujarat too, instead of focusing on the discontent in rural parts, the disruptive nature of Goods and Services Tax implementation, and the general sense of anti-incumbency of two decades, the Congress outsourced its fate to caste leaders with little political experience. In the end, it was reduced to claiming “moral victory”, which means nothing in electoral politics.
The message for the BJP was that it could no longer take the voters for granted, even in Gujarat. Its tally fell by 16 seats as compared to 2012, although its vote-share went up. The party must recall the “India Shining’ moment of 2004 and understand that support can dissipate almost as quickly as it comes. Recent political history is replete with such instances: 1977, when Indira Gandhi led the Congress to a debacle and also lost in her constituency; 1980, when the Janata Party collapsed and Indira Gandhi made a grand comeback; 1989, when Rajiv Gandhi led his party to a defeat, frittering away a three-fourth mandate.
Fresh battle lines will be drawn for 2018, which is a year of many important elections. If both the Congress and the BJP have absorbed the experiences of the year to soon end, we can expect fireworks that will light up the nation’s democratic landscape. The Congress will seek to protect its turf in Karnataka and Meghalaya, while the BJP can expect a fight in the States its rules — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
The rural-urban voting pattern will be tested in good measure, given that Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have a far larger number of rural constituencies than Gujarat has; the BJP did resoundingly well in urban Gujarat and relatively less well in the rural belt. Although each of these States has a different set of issues on which the voters will decide, common factors will be at play too.
The first is the central leadership of the Congress and the BJP. As Congress president, Rahul Gandhi will now be even more than before pitted against his rival party’s principal campaigner, Modi. The second is the local leadership of the two parties. Interestingly, while both have strong leaders, there are turf issues as well among these leaders. The State-level leadership tussle, thus, could be a decisive factor.
The BJP had ruled Karnataka before, and so had the Congress in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. If the BJP manages to win over Karnataka and retain the States it governs, the Congress’s prospects for 2019 would be bleak. Indeed, even a status quo would be fine for the BJP, though the loss in Karnataka can set back its plans for a south India foray.
For the Congress, less than the best scenario would be to retain Karnataka and snatch at least one state from the BJP. That would be more than a ‘moral win’. The best case situation would, of course, be a complete victory in the north and the south. It’s important that the party’s new president creates his team well before these contests. Finally, there are de-railers in both the Congress and the BJP. They must be reined in.

Chattarpur (Madhya Pradesh) [India], Nov 26 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday sharpened his attack at the Congress, saying that the state became economically weak, "bimaru (sick)", when the party was in power. Addressing a campaign rally here, Chouhan said that Congress is angry with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) because of the developmental and welfare work undertaken by his government in the last 15 years since it came to power. "Of the 70 years since we achieved independence, Congress was in power for 54 years. What did Congress do during that time? During their rule, they destroyed Madhya Pradesh. They turned Madhya Pradesh into a bimaru state. We are now in power in Madhya Pradesh for the last 15 years," Chouhan said. Bimaru is an acronym that came up in the mid-1980s and was used to refer to the poor economic conditions of four states, namely Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Taking a jibe at the Congress over its poll promise of waiving loans for the farmers, Chouhan said: "Let me ask you all one thing, Congress ruled for 54 years, did they worry about the farmers at that time? Now, they are talking about the welfare of farmers." He further said, "Congress used to provide loans to farmers on 18 per cent interest. We reduced it to zero per cent. Now we have a scheme called 'Mukhyamantri Laghu Kisan Swavalamban Scheme' for small farmers. We also plan to give them huge benefits by giving them bonuses. No farmer will be allowed to remain debtor." Continuing his tirade against the Congress, Chouhan asserted: "The roads were in a sorry state. Now, all of them have been repaired under the BJP government. We have paid electricity bills of the poor, made electricity available to everyone and tried to free them from the burden of inflated bills. Yet, Congress gets angry at us. It is because Congress only makes promises but does not fulfill them." He further said that the Congress kept on claiming that they removed poverty, but it is the BJP which took concrete steps to eradicate it. Accusing the Congress of being "hungry for power", Chouhan said that the party's future looks bleak since they are out of power in most of the states. Madhya Pradesh will go to polls to elect legislators for its 230 constituencies on November 28. Results will be declared on December 11. While the BJP is aiming to retain the state for the fourth time, the Congress is in a bid to regain power in the state after 2003. (ANI)

Khandwa (Madhya Pradesh) [India], Nov 26 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Congress party and said that it is the Congress which is responsible for the destruction of Madhya Pradesh and is now furious at him because he developed the state. Addressing an election campaign rally, Chouhan said, "It is Congress party which is responsible for the destruction of Madhya Pradesh. Congress is now running a campaign that there is anger. I want to ask people if they are angry with me. It is not people but the Congress which is furious at me." "They are furious because they gave me potholed filled state and I constructed 1.5 lakh kilometers of excellent roads and gave it to the public. Congress is furious because they had made Madhya Pradesh a state of darkness and we provided excellent power supply to the public. They are worried hence making allegations," he added. Later addressing a public rally at Dewas, he made promises of bearing the higher education expenses of students and providing two-wheelers to the girls achieving good marks, "My government is resolved to bear the higher education expenses of students of the state who score good marks. The daughters of this state who get 75% marks in the 12th standard will be provided with a scooty by the government." He also invoked his humble background during the rally and said that the Congress is not able to tolerate that the son of a farmer is sitting on the chair of the chief minister for last many years. Chouhan also addressed another political rally in Ujjain district and said, "Congress since the time of Indira Gandhi has been saying that they will remove poverty but did not do anything in this regard. However I assure you by the year 2022, no poor person will live in a mud house and we will provide affordable housing for all." Intensifying his poll campaign, Shivraj also addressed different political rallies in Khargone, Agar Malwa and Jaora and asserted that he will continue to work for public welfare and development of the state, without any discrimination. The state will go to polls to elect legislators for its 230 constituencies on November 28. Results will be declared on December 11. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will look to extend its 15-year rule in the state, the Congress is in a bid to regain power in Madhya Pradesh. (ANI)

Damoh (Madhya Pradesh) [India], Nov 24 (ANI): With only three days left for Madhya Pradesh to go to polls, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan speaks with decency, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi lacks it whenever he attacks the Congress. Addressing a rally in Damoh, Gandhi said although Chouhan is aware that he is contesting this election only to lose, there is no hatred in his words. "Shivraj Singh has realised that he is fighting this election to lose, but there is no hatred in him. However, the other person (Prime Minister) is worried and he talks with hatred everywhere he goes. The Prime Minister is weak," the Congress Chief said. Continuing his tirade against the Prime Minister, the Congress president said that people have lost their faith in the former. "He (Prime Minister Modi) knows that he is going to be defeated in 2019. This has caused hatred in his heart. Wherever he is going, he is talking with hatred and anger. This fear is converting into hatred. The entire country is watching," he added. The state will go to polls to elect legislators for its 230 constituencies on November 28. Results will be declared on December 11. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will look to extend its 15-year rule in the state, the Congress is in a bid to regain power in Madhya Pradesh. The election will be considered as a direct political battle between the BJP and the Congress. While the incumbent chief minister will try to win the post for a consecutive fourth term, the Congress will fight for gaining power after 2003. (ANI)

Sehore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], Nov 23 (ANI): Training guns on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said the Prime Minister has brought shame to word "chowkidar" (watchman). Gandhi, who often uses the word 'chowkidar' in reference to the Prime Minister, said that the situation is such that whenever the word is uttered people immediately respond and say "chor hai" (is a thief). Previously Gandhi scion had used the slogan "Gali gali mein shor hai, Chowkidar chor hai' to insinuate that the Prime Minister indulged in acts of corruption. Elaborating on this, Gandhi said: "Wherever you go and say the word "chowkidar", there comes a reply "chor hai". I want to apologise to the chowkidars of the country because it is not your mistake, you all are not thieves, you all are honest and hardworking. Only one person has brought disgrace to you. The Prime Minister of the country has defamed all the chowkidars". Attacking Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Gandhi said: "On the one hand, there is Shivraj Chouhan who has been the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for 15 years and enjoys all power and resources. On the other hand, there is the Congress who represents the voice of people. A few days ago, I said by mistake that Shivraj ji's son is involved in Panama papers. Within a minute, he said he will file a defamation case against me. When I talk about Vyapam, e-tendering, illegal mining and mid-day meal, why don't you file defamation? It means there is truth in them." Gandhi also accused Prime Minister Modi of breaking the trust of the people by making hollow promises. He said before coming to power in 2014, the Prime Minister used to talk about combating corruption, unemployment and farmers' welfare but is now silent on these issues. The 230-Madhya Pradesh Assembly will go to polls on November 28 and the counting of votes will be held on December 11. The Assembly election in the state is being seen as a direct political battle between the BJP and the Congress. While Chouhan is eyeing to secure his fourth consecutive term as the chief minister of the state, the Congress party is looking to regain the power after 2003. (ANI)

Satna (Madhya Pradesh) [India], Nov 23 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday took a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi with the lyrics of a 1997-song sung by Qawwali singer Altaf Raja. "Yeh to thehre pardesi, saath kya nibhayenge?," Chouhan said at an election rally here. Touting the Congress party president as a pardesi (foreigner), Chouhan said, "Where will be Rahul Gandhi after 28 November (voting day for Madhya Pradesh elections)? He stays less in India and more abroad. He (Rahul) wouldn't be in India after the voting will be over as he stays outside the country. He is an outsider, he won't be here to help us. In the end, Mama (Shivraj) will be here to help." Earlier in the day, the Congress chief, while addressing a rally in poll-bound state's Vidisha district said that Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government in Madhya Pradesh has destroyed the education sector with Vyapam scam -- the entrance examination, admission and recruitment scam unearthed in the state in 2013. The 230-Madhya Pradesh Assembly will go to polls on November 28 and the counting of votes will be held on December 11. The assembly election in the state is seen as a direct political battle between the BJP and the Congress. While Chouhan is eyeing to secure his fourth consecutive term as the chief minister of the state, the Congress party is looking to regain the power after 2003. (ANI)

Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], Nov 19 (ANI): In an apparent reference to Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that one of the senior Congress leaders is not being allowed to campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in the state as the party fears that people will recall the failure of their tenure if Singh campaigns. Earlier, Singh had said that "his party loses votes if he campaigns." Addressing a rally here on Sunday, the Prime Minister said, "One of the senior Congress leaders is not being allowed to campaign during these elections. The reason is that the Congress fears that if he campaigns, the party will lose as people will recall what the fate of Madhya Pradesh was during the time they were in power." The Prime Minister also accused the Congress of playing divisive politics and said, "Congress neither has any policy, intention, nor a leader... its leader is confused. Let the naamdar (apparently Congress chief Rahul Gandhi) write down on a piece of paper how many zeroes are there in Rs. 23,000 crore. He will get confused." He further asserted that these elections are not about who would win or who won't win but about rejecting the "negative forces who have always focused on the 'divide and rule' approach." Talking about the development work in Indore city, the Prime Minister announced that as part of the Smart City project, Rs. 23,000 crore will be spent on development of seven cities in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh including Indore over five years. He added, "In last two years, the foreign tourists' influx has increased." Madhya Pradesh will go to polls on November 28 to elect 230 members of the legislative assembly. The results will be declared on December 11. The single-phase election in the state is seen as a direct political battle between the BJP and the Congress. While Chouhan is eyeing to secure his fourth consecutive term as chief minister, the Congress is looking to regain power after 2003. (ANI)
