ACOTAR MEN AND THE SPORTS I THINK THEY WOULD PLAY:
Tumblr media
note: this is all up for interpretation, so feel free to list your suggestions in the comments !!
rhysand: definitely a big shot baseball player. can imagine him in the traditional pinstriped yankees uniform. real smug bastard on the field, mind-fuck strategist.
cassian: is a beast at heavy weight sports, but this man cannot run to save his life. prefers more stationary sports like boxing and wrestling. competes in weightlifting events for fun.
azriel: only participates in team sports if cassian and rhysand are playing, but i think he would thrive in individual or one-on-one sports. martial arts like bjj (brazilian jiu-jitsu) and judo are his best.
tamlin: this man screams front row prop. say your thoughts and prayers because he will quite literally go beast mode and bulldoze you over. always getting carded and warnings because he can’t reign in his temper.
lucien: now call me biased but lucien is a jack of all trades. he dabbles in all sorts of sports, mostly of which are unconventional, and is really good at them once he puts his mind to it. that being said i would say he plays a mix of track and field, lacrosse and volleyball. occasionally does archery and swimming.
tarquin: any and all water sports and baby tarquin is undefeated. loves waterpolo and competitive swimming.
varian: wind-surfing, for sure. i would also say rowing; amren especially loves his arms.
helion: is definitely a former rugby jock. a literal powerhouse on and off the field. those thunder thighs be THIGHING. also dabbles in shot put because i feel like he would unironically be really good at it.
thesan: he gives me major badminton vibes. i dont know why, but just racket sports in general??????
kallias: any and all winter sports and kallias is there. a pro at ice hockey and speed skating. likes to do duo figure skating with viviane.
beron: is literally one of those middle age, upper middle class white men who spend all their free time at the country club, sipping on top shelf whiskey and abusing the clubs workers. probably plays golf and tennis, croquet too but hes too prideful and thinks its for old people.

I don't know who this post is for but just going to power through it anyway.
If you are running a martial arts gym and you are trying to get people in the door, you have to go outside. Are you at town functions? Street fairs? Book fairs? Library demonstrations? 5Ks? Sports functions? etc.
I say this because a few towns over had a children's book fair and one of the sponsors was a BJJ/Wrestling school who also tabled the event. And a bunch of kids signed up for free 1st classes. They also were giving out discounts to children who compete for the town wrestling team for off-season training. That was the first time I've seen a martial arts gym at any town function. I say that as someone who worked at one for a bit back in the day. If you want the community to funnel in young talent or even just folks looking to get in shape, you got to invest in your community.

After damn near a year and a half of BJJ, I finally submitted someone with a leg triangle. It was very sloppy and ugly, but the guy was stronger than me and I count it as a qualified success.
Before, I didn't really understand how to clear the opponent's arm before placing my legs around their neck, and the instructions in Neil Melanson's (excellent) book about leg triangles all start from a position of already having gotten your leg over your opponent's shoulder. [Edit: I'm looking through the book again, and this isn't even true, it presents tons of ways to do it, haha]
We went over the move again in class a couple of weeks ago, and I guess something clicked. Here's the illustration from that session:

Top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes Participants in BJJ attempt to apply a series of chokes and joint locks that will cause their opponent to “submit” or “tap out.” The sport is built on principles of self-defense that evolved from Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. Top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes Our progressive system offers a grappling and submission Jiu-Jitsu style that applies to self-defense, sport Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts fighting. We teach posture, pressure, and precision as the foundation upon which everything else is built. Our head coach, Rob Handley, received his black belt from Grand Master Flavio Behring. Get a free Jiu-Jitsu lesson.Top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes Near Tilak Nager, In Delhi. 2.This martial art is a ground fighting, self-defense art in which a smaller/ weaker person can defeat a bigger, stronger assailant by using the body to submit the opponent using joint-locks and chokeholds in Gi or No Gi style. This style focuses on the body’s flexibility to get the upper hand and uses the opponent’s body limitations to their advantage. This style was developed by the Gracie family to change the judo style from using physical strength against your opponent but using techniques and positions for any person. Sparring or “Rolling” situations can change if it is Gi or No Gi. With Gi, you can use the person’s Gi against them by grabbing them to gain leverage or even use their own Gi to choke them while relying on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. In No Gi, the focus is purely on BJJ techniques to get a submission on your opponent. There are several positions the fight can take place from such as guard position (one person is on their knees and the other is on their back with their legs wrapped around the opponent’s waist), mount (one person is on their back and the other is on top of the opponent in a sit-like position), back mount position (one person is on their stomach and the other is on the opponent’s back in a sit-like position), and side control (one person is on their back the other is on top with the legs on the side of the opponent). Each position has its positives and negatives for both the person on top and bottom if you know what you are doing you can make the situation work for you. 3. Legends MMA is affiliated with Robert Drysdale who oversees and grades our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) program.

17, 18, 28 for grandpa v?
Thanks for the ask! 🧡 Questions here!
Tumblr media
17) how did they spend their summers/free time as a child?
Largely pissing off her tutors by not doing any of her assignments, cycling through a revolving door of extracurriculars she refused to stick with, and spending as much time as humanly possible outside of her childhood Charter Hill apartment. She’d often seek refuge at nearby shopping centers and NCART stations. In her teen years, Grandpa would often sneak out to go party or poke around abandoned buildings.
Around 13, she did manage to finally stick with an aikido class because of the instructor. Her mom signed her up for private lessons after she got kicked out of her BJJ class for getting into a fight and because she refused to let Valerie take dance classes, citing that it was not a practical life skill for a respectable person.
18) their opinion on lying, stealing, and killing?
Lying - She’ll do it if she feels she needs to. Often times, she prefers to lie by omission or will try to funnel conversations to where she wants them to go before lying outright though.
Stealing - Sharing is caring.
Killing - Not something she derives joy from, but if it’s between her or them; it’s a simple solution. It’s survival and the preventative measure to someone turning around and stabbing you in back. And bodies don’t squeal. On occasion, it serves as an effective method to prove a point.
28) how do they show that they care about someone? how do they express that they don't like someone?
Grandpa is very much an acts of service or spending time with said person. It she really cares about someone, she’ll often go out of her way to help, even if it goes against her better judgment. She can be beaten half to death and bleeding out, but she’ll show up. Very hell or high water.
She also savors the slow moments that she gets to spend with the people she cares about. Procrastinating and people watching at Misty’s, hanging out in the basement and listening to Vik talk about boxing metaphors she doesn't understand, helping Mama Welles cook, getting late night tacos with Jackie. Moments that often got broken for her when she was growing up.
If she doesn’t like someone, she’ll keep her distance if she can avoid them. If she can’t avoid them, Grandpa does not keep any pretense of being polite. Skip the pleasantries, get to the point, and keep it biz.
If she hates you and you’ve incurred her wrath, murder.

ahhhhhh the friends i've made at jiu jitsu invited me to the queer bjj class at the gym across town that's once a month, and since it's free, more people came and!!! i have made more friends!!!
there were soooo many other trans and queer folks at this bjj class, and the coach herself was trans, and ahhhhh it was just so good. i haven't been around that many queers at once in, stars, 7 years??? since college??? and never with the self confidence i have now for sure!!!
also i'm really starting to get the hang of what i've been learning! i'm still suuuper weak, but i can feel my stamina already increasing. my muscles will get stronger eventually 💪 but the person who's the most skilled in our group said they really like rolling with me! and i could actually flow through moves when we sparred! i don't know many yet, but i joined at a spot in the curriculum where we're learning some really solid basics, and i very often end up in a spot where i get a lightbulb "i know what to do here!!" moment!!! already!!! after 7 classes!!!

Work hard, play harder
It was a little after midnight at the company party. Justin, alongside his coworkers Eric and Mick, were the last three to stay behind. Justin was the youngest, and also the latest addition to the office out of the three. Like any other new employees, he was a little timid, and struggling to adapt to the new environment. However, he was lucky that he soon had not one, but two senior workers behind his back. Sure, Eric and Mick might be slightly more enthusiastic than those he had worked with before, but for him anything that makes life easier counts.
After the bar closed down for the night, the three men retreated to a hotel room booked by the firm for those who did not wish to drive home after a long evening of drinking. There was a rather large city view room with a king sized bed. Mick opened his secret bottle of whiskey and the men continued drinking. Justin was never a fan of heavy liquor, but that whiskey was god-damn smooth. He ended up finishing the whole thing nearly by himself, while the other two were just looking at him smiling. Around 2 a.m. the men started to feel the effect of the alcohol kicking in. Eric tried to cool down by loosening his tie and kicking off his Oxford shoes, revealing a moist and steamy sheer OTC with gold toe. Mick followed suit and took off his footwear, showing off his ribbed black socks. The men sat next to each other on the couch with their feet on the coffee table. Justin, leaning against the bed frame across the table, felt a little intimidated, yet fascinated by his seniors’ huge feet. However, the alcohol had made all of his inhibition disappeared, as he stood up and joined the other men on to the couch, in the middle.
“We should play something…”, said the junior salesman as he looked at Mick and Eric. At that moment, Justin’s head was already spinning as if he was riding on a merry-go-round, with his colleagues’ wiggling socked feet floating around him. He barely noticed the grin on the face of his colleagues.
“Sure, why not? What game should we play?”, said Mick.
“I’ve got an idea,” said Eric, “I could teach you guys some cool moves from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class I have been taking. It’s completely safe, according to my instructor…”
“Do me!”. Justin just blurted out of his drunken mouth. He was so excited that now he got to bond with those he had been looking up to.
“Ok, then. Come here”, said Eric as he signaled Justin to lay out on the couch, leaning against him. Eric loosened Justin’s tie and unbuttoned his dress shirt to make him feel more comfortable, and to make sure that his younger coworker could breathe when the demo was finished. Eric rubbed his hand around the young man’s pectorals to relax him. On the other side, Mick was doing his part by taking off Justin’s shoes and massaging his feet. The scent of the salesman’s black acrylic crew strangely aroused Mick, whose hands now crawled up Justin’s pants and fiddled the leg hairs around the cuff of his socks.
“You should be able to wake up after 10 seconds or so”, said the BJJ brown belt Eric. He then locked Justin’s head with his arm and applied a rear naked choke on his junior colleague. The pressure of the grip increased, and Justin’s crotch area also also begun to tighten, as he started flashing back to the summer where he had lost to a sleeper hold by his cousin during a race to the last popsicle at their grandparents’ house. Noticing the growing bulge inside Justin’s pants, Mick unfastened his belt and pulled down both his pants and  black boxer brief. As soon as his bird was free from the cage, Justin’s eyes rolled to the back of his head and the lack of oxygen to his brain in combination with alcohol in his blood knocked him out cold completely for the rest of the night.
The next morning, Justin woke up with a pounding headache. He had drunk hard a few occasions in his life, but this time the aftermath felt slightly… different. He rubbed his eyes and realized that he was lying on a hotel bed, and as he lifted up the cover, he noticed that he was completely undressed to only his black crew socks. It felt sticky down there, both his cock and butt crack. There was also a rather unusual taste in his mouth, sweat but slightly fishy. He looked around to find his cell phone; even though it was already weekend, he was worried that he might be late for work, as a reflex. When he turned on the phone, his lock screen had been changed to another picture - the picture from the previous night, of the three colleagues on a blackout-drinking night-out:
Tumblr media
Checking his message box, Justin found only one new, from last night:
“Thx for the wonderful night. Welcome to the club. Eric. P/s Don’t worry, our socks were on the whole time so it wasn’t gay”

I’m officially a member of a jiujitsu school in Japan. I love it. Of course, Krav Maga will always have my heart. It’s my first martial art, and I ache to return to it. I love the explosive swirl into techniques and the mad rush to subdue your partner. I love the exhaustion we’re forced into before beginning actual training and sparring. I will never be more invigorated than when I get a full on punch or kick and have to ride with the momentum and pain to find my way into the next move. The thrill of being against two people wildly trying to throw you off balance and figuring out how to manage the two? It’s so exciting.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is different. There is no striking and it is primarily about grappling. You are up close and personal with your partner, and breaking the contact or stalling can cost you points. Learning how to figure out the rhythm of someone else’s body and expose ways to break their guard or submission is so cool. I’m learning how to use all different parts of my body so that I can roll longer. Since I’m just a white belt, drills are the primary focus and sparring isn’t a thing yet. I can’t wait to spar. I want to go in cocky and get submitted in three seconds flat so I can learn where my weaknesses are. For now, I’m focusing on learning the technique and making it perfect.
My instructors for both, much to my vain-ass self’s pride, describe me as a boundless creature of pure energy. To my chagrin, I’m seen as very cute because I smile and get super excited whenever I get knocked down or whenever I’m told to repeat a drill again and again. My BJJ instructors have put me on the competition path. After a few lessons, they asked me why I was doing this. I said that I want to learn to fight and win regardless of how big or strong my opponent is. They asked if I was worried about getting hurt, and I said that I am going to and currently doing everything to avoid injury, but that pain is not a deterrent. Quite the opposite. I was then asked if I wanted to compete. I immediately asked when the competition was and everyone in that gym in ear-shot started laughing. But in a nice way. The master of the dojo (I think that’s how you’d refer to him?) said that I had a long way to go before I was ready to compete. I felt a little deflated at that. Then he said, but you’re a runner, so I imagine you’re going to power your way into it with no trouble. And he then told me I was on the competition path.
It’s cool because this is all in Japanese. I’m not close with my fellow English teacher JET people. It makes me a bit sad when I see them so easily becoming friends and going out drinking and enjoying the night life. I’m not one for that scene. I don’t like drinking. And I also don’t like being out and away from my safe places, especially with people who just… idk. Like, we aren’t on the same page. I understand them, but I can’t relate. However, at BJJ, I feel at home. I’m making friends, even if it’s just during class and free mat time.
My social experience here in Japan hasn’t been what the majority of my fellow ALTs are able to do. I wish I could. I try and have tried. So I’m really happy to be able to be finding a community not only among my teachers at my school, but in BJJ classes. My new table of teachers are “bullying me” into going to karaoke with them. They leave me notes and we all chat and grab coffee and snacks together. And now my BJJ buddies are just… such blessings of pure light.
I’m not good at social stuff when there is no prompt or goal. But I can do things easily when I know how to act and what is expected. My fellow teachers are amazing, but my new team makes me feel like I am actually a person. It sucks that all the fellow ALTs respect me but don’t see me as part of their groups. When everyone meets together and I see all these people with friends, I feel like there is something wrong with me. But at school and in BJJ, I feel like I belong.
