Congratulations to Jessica Miller on the successful completion of her Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency!
What a great confluence of situations this was. First of all, it's Jessica's birthday. Secondly, she was heading directly to the airport from Joong Boo (it's very close to the Blue Line train) and finally, Jessica got to be the very last Joong Boo Resident because I'm ending the project and starting a new residency program in September.
Jessica was visiting Chicago from Atlanta. She was here for a conference in connection with her job at Emory University where she works in Communications for the undergraduate program with my longtime friend Steven L. Anderson. Two years ago on a trip to Chicago, Jessica discovered publications by Temporary Services and Half Letter Press at Quimby's Books and then Steven connected her to me. This was our first time meeting.
After stowing Jessica's luggage in my car we entered Joong Boo where the Snack Corner was about as busy as it gets. Still, a table always appears when you really need it and the kitchen was a full-on machine as usual. It's miserably hot right now so we both opted for Bi Bim Bap rather than one of the molten soup dishes. Within about ten minutes we were eating.
Jessica was curious about the inspiration for the residency program and how it has evolved so we talked about that for a while. Jessica has made some DIY small press photo-based publications, and has another creative written project in the works so she also had a number of questions about my publishing practice and the nuts and bolts of how all of that works. One of the things I'm busiest with at the moment is a booklet about this meal-based residency project so we discussed the content of that upcoming publication as well.
Though we took our time with lunch, this definitely wasn't a day for lingering in the Snack Corner so we spent the remainder of the residency exploring Joong Boo. Jessica wanted to know about the most unusual things I've eaten from Joong Boo so I showed her the miniature baby crabs in chili sauce. These look just like normal crabs, only very small, and you just eat the entire thing. I brought them home once and had to hide them in the back of the fridge because my wife was completely horrified. Jessica also seemed less than enticed.
A favorite activity of Joong Boo visits with residents is to marvel at the enormous Jack Fruit they are always selling lately. While doing so an elderly woman made a point to tell us how much she dislikes the smell of Jack Fruit and also seemingly everything else about Jack Fruit. She did seem to respect the size of the fruits, however. Joong Boo was selling them in halves today, so you only had to buy about 20 pounds at a time. I wound up buying the canned version of Jack Fruit which is supposedly the best for making vegan pulled pork. We'll see how it goes. Jessica took some of my airplane snack recommendations, and got various sweet and savory chips and mochi or gummy treats including the excellent soft lychee gummies. We checked out, I dropped Jessica off at the train, and we said our goodbyes. A perfectly pleasant end to the project!
A huge thanks to everyone who participated in the Joong Boo Residency Program and to you for reading these reports. Stay tuned for my upcoming booklet about meal-based artist residencies, and my new residency program starting in September.

D525 Barcelona is an office building located in Barcelona, Spain that is designed through the concept of sustainable renovation. More than just an avant-garde building, the project also offers environmental and wellness benefits.
photos © Sergio Sanz (courtesy of Sanzpont)
The new headquarters of Naturgy group in Barcelona, a building property of Inmobiliaria Colonial, is located at Av. Diagonal 525. The project was designed by Sanzpont Arquitectura based on the concept of sustainable renovation, with the aim of reducing its environmental impact and extending its efficient, useful life. Its execution was carried out with materials that strictly respect the environment, and according to an environmental quality management plan.
photo © Sergio Sanz (courtesy of Sanzpont)
The original building was used for housing in the ’70s and presented several structural challenges. However, despite those challenges, the project incorporated all of the design and construction requirements necessary to achieve LEED Gold certification.
photos © Dani Rovira (courtesy of Colonial)
More Natural Light & Purer Air The project incorporates a main façade based on large windows that provide abundant natural light, defined by unique photocatalytic krion 3D modules. These modules give the building a unique identity but, more importantly, have the ability to purify the air through their photocatalytic material. The krion material’s KEAST technology takes it one step further by extrapolating its benefits beyond its surface with the ability to decontaminate the air. The design, comprised of clean and aerodynamic lines, creates an avant-garde image of movement.
photo © David Cardelús (courtesy of Naturgy)
Greater Eco-Efficiency & Cleaner Energy The building envelope and its systems have been designed to render it an eco-efficient model, improving its performance, thermal insulation, and energy consumption. The design of the south façade incorporates a treatment of photovoltaic louvers, providing protection from the sun in the warmer months of the year, and generating clean energy through part of its electricity consumption. The photovoltaic louvers create enough energy to power 1,562 points of light for 4 hours per day, for up to 35 years, free of CO2 196 emissions.
photos © Sergio Sanz (courtesy of Sanzpont)
More Green Space & Native Plant Species A large part of the building’s roof is designed as a natural green space. It incorporates low-consumption native plant species that provide an extra insulation layer, thus minimizing the environmental impact, improving the microclimate, and helping to mitigate the heat island effect.
photos © Sergio Sanz (courtesy of Sanzpont)
Sustainability & the Building Skin To develop the project, a detailed study of the climate and the environment was conducted to determine the characteristics of the architectural envelope and its response throughout the year. This considerably improved the performance and efficiency of the building in terms of energy savings and sustainability. In addition to a rooftop garden, the design and improvement of the architectural envelope includes its orientation, thermal and acoustic insulation, solar control louvers, and production of renewable energy.
photos © Dani Rovira (courtesy of Colonial)
Developed & Coordinated in BIM The project has been developed using the latest BIM cloud technology for its complete coordination. Virtual models of architecture, engineering, interior design, and urban environment were integrated in order to generate a coordinated digital building.

An engine as massive as the U.S. economy is not going to restart without some sputtering, which is what many economists believe explains the double-digit price increases in many goods and services as the nation moves past the pandemic. Global supply chains were so badly disrupted that it’s taking some doing to get everything back in gear.
Disruptions — and price increases — have been more severe in some states than others. That’s why CNBC’s annual America’s Top States for Business study considers Cost of Living among our ten categories of competitiveness. Some states feature costs so high that many people may prefer to stay away.
These ten states are where a dollar went the furthest last year, and where prices have been heading in the volatile first half of this year versus one year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also listed are average prices for selected items, based on the 2020 Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research, C2ER.
10. Indiana

Driving through the Crossroads of America can be a breeze, with Indiana gas prices running about 30% less in Bloomington than what they are paying in San Francisco. Then head home to your apartment, where you pay roughly half the rent you would pay in Chicago.
2021 Cost of Living score: 62 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: A-)
Consumer Price Index (June, Midwest Region): Up 5.8%
Average home price (Bloomington): $339,513
Half gallon of milk: $1.39
Monthly energy bill: $147.72
8. (tie) Tennessee

See a movie in Kansas City and it will cost about 30% less than it would in Hollywood. And if you wanted to buy a nice men’s shirt in Missouri for your first visit to a theater since before the pandemic, it would cost about 25% less than the same shirt in Boston.

In his first year as President in 1993, former Arkansas governor Bill Clinton caught endless grief over a report — which turned out to be exaggerated — that he paid $200 for a haircut by his personal stylist aboard Air Force One. Nearly 30 years later, he could get still a haircut in Little Rock for about $20, which is also about 20% cheaper than in his current home in Westchester County, New York.

The wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet in Oklahoma, and it makes a very affordable loaf of bread — nearly 30% less than it would cost in Portland, Oregon. Your monthly energy bill in Norman is about half what you would pay in New Haven, Connecticut. Ponca City boasted the lowest apartment rents in the country in 2020, at just $502 for a two-bedroom unit.

If Dorothy Gale were alive today — and her little dog, too — taking Toto to the veterinarian in Dodge City would cost half what it would cost in New York City. If she went to a restaurant in New York and ordered a steak, she would find the price 20% higher than at home, and she would know right away that she’s not in Kansas anymore.

Got a hankerin’ for a hamburger? It will cost you 25% less in Hattiesburg than it would in Honolulu. How about that? But the bargains go beyond burgers in the Magnolia State, which offers low housing costs, inexpensive energy, and all-around affordable prices. Even with inflation, your dollar will go further in Mississippi, America’s cheapest state for 2021.

LAST SUPPER: WON KIM
The Question:
You have one meal left in your life. You can eat whatever your want. What’s your last supper?
The Eater:
Chef Won Kim (aka Stephen Kim, aka Revise CMW): the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker.  Yall might have come across the couple football field sized murals he’s got at Lincoln Park Whole Foods, or the compositions for Goose Island Clybourn; or perhaps you know him as an urban street artist.  When not creating, Won is consuming…immoderately.  Homeboys been known to slog through a charcuterie plate alongside a stack of pork turrines whilst flipping the bird to his gout condition.
Chef Kim is also renowned for placing the amp back into the social food setting.  Sans his street chef collective, Chicago popup dinners would look hella different.  For the sud heads, Won has also invigorated the Chicago Craft Brew culture through his homebrewer showcase events such as BrewLala, BrewHoho and BrewHeyhey.  He’s also written delicious gluttonous narrative for these jibronis.  Yall can follow Won’s street shenanigans at his blog: sleepingisforsuckers.
The Last Supper:
It’s interesting to me when I work in a new kitchen whether it’s at someone’s house or in an established restaurant because there are truly so many ways to die. This is a pretty morbid way to think when starting your inevitable minimum 12 hour shift. The thought of dying while maybe choking a literal chicken in your hand always looms and is quite possible, not to mention how on edge and psychotic a lot of good cooks are. They are all ticking time bombs, the best of them can snap over something as trivial as a cup dropping or silverware not rolled correctly. One of my biggest fears is falling down the stairs holding a pot of something. I’ll just go ahead and assume that’s what the strange white girls swimming in brain milk from the Minority Report announced, but instead of preemptively trying to prevent it from happening, I just said “fuck it,” because I just don’t want to work dinner service tomorrow and I prepped my last meal in celebration.
My last meal is super simple and screams comfort having grown up with less than moderate means in Chicago. It was what my mom would make to quickly feed us, get our bellies full and our mouths shut. There isn’t a name for it, but it hits all the right sensations and reminds me of important simplicity is sometimes. It’s a bowl of short grained rice mixed with soy sauce and butter, kimchi (sometimes fried), a sunny side up egg, toasted nori and a drizzle of toasted sesame oil.
Beverly Kim bibimbap: The closest you’ll ever get to Wons Mom’s Seoul Bowl
It’s a poor mans bi Bim bap, but for me, it’s as real as it gets. It’s essentially a Seoul bowl (see what I did there?) and it’s like wearing a turnt up yellow snuggie filled with warmed up Vaseline. It may sound a little underwhelming but having eaten at some amazing places, you soon realize that some times a bowl of humble pie goes a long way after a shitty day no matter what you do in life.

Congratulations to Cara Kuball on the successful completion of her Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency.
Cara and I first met over a decade ago when she was studying art at University of Chicago. We think we met in around 2002 possibly, when the group I'm in, Temporary Services, was part of an exhibit at the Smart Museum of Art on campus. Nine years ago Cara moved to the Boston area, where she now works as the Collections Manager for Preventive Conservation at the Museum of Fine Arts. She and her husband Damon Bishop also organize the International Pancake Film Festival which is heading toward its 10th year. It really is a film festival where all of the films somehow include pancakes. We did a little publication exchange and Cara gave me a copy of the most recent program (published by the New England Journal of Pancakes Press).
Cara was in town for a conservation-themed work conference and fortunately she able to take a break from days full of presentations to enjoy a late lunch at Joong Boo. Though she used to live not far from Joong Boo when she was in Chicago, this was her first time eating there. As a vegan, there's not much you can eat from the Joong Boo Snack Corner, but Cara was happy to have the Bi Bim Bap without egg. I ordered the same thing, in solidarity, only with the egg.
We talked about a whole range of things: publishing, museum work, how extremely gendered the world of art handling is in Boston (men are used for damn near everything), and the weird age gaps in Boston and how the energy shifts massively when the college kids go home from school at the end of the year. We also talked a little about pancakes in film. Cara described an amazing sounding educational film where a teacher explains a woman's reproductive system by drawing it in a pan with pancake batter. This managed to jog my memory of a scene in the Russ Meyer film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (that I misremembered until after our meal) where Meyer cuts from a shot of a woman getting an abortion to someone in their kitchen making pancakes. You just never know what you're going to get into at a Joong Boo Residency.
At one point, while we were talking about publishing, Cara's residency was nearly derailed by an older gentleman sitting on my right who involved himself in our conversation. He turned out to be a pretty politically radical old dude, who brought up the worker-owned Salsedo Press on Chicago's near west side. I've never printed with Salsedo but he got me interested. After some back and forth about our miserable attempt at a President, Cara and I resumed our conversation, followed by a tour of Joong Boo Market.
We particularly honed in on the rice cakes. I wound up going for a packet of chestnut paste rice cakes. Joong Boo must have 35 different kinds of rice cakes so it's a bit overwhelming. We also studied the Jack fruit. Neither of us have ever prepared Jack fruit and I was rather intimidated by the fact that most of the Jack fruits on display looked to weigh about 20 pounds each. I learned from Cara that Jack fruit is not sweet and it is sometimes used as an egg substitute in vegan dishes because when you scoop it out and cook it, it has a scrambled egg-like consistency. She mentioned that she has eaten Jack fruit tacos. I brought this up to one of the Mexican workers at Joong Boo and he looked at me like I was absolutely fucking crazy.
This was a very enjoyable and rather leisurely residency with a healthy amount of rambling conversation, and no one clamoring for our spot at the counter after we finished everything in our bowls.
June residencies are all booked for the Public Collectors Joong Boo Residency Program, but if you would like to apply for July or later you can find more information (and see a list of past residents) here.

Cityzenith gets green light on $500 Million Orlando Sports & Entertainment District Digital Twin project
A ground-breaking Digital Twin project by Cityzenith promote, optimize, and future proof the ambitious $500 million Orlando Sports & Entertainment Smart District (OS+ED), aiming to drive the Florida city’s millions of annual visitors to the downtown hotspot.
Confirmation follows a commercial agreement with SISCO, the project’s technology provider, finalizing terms with Cityzenith (CZ) and the project owners, OS+ED Dev Corp, to deploy CZ’s award-winning SmartWorldPro2 Digital Twin platform for the first time on a megaproject in the United States.
Orlando Sports & Entertainment District: image supplied by Baker Barrios Architects Inc
SmartWorldPro2 Integrates all software and services used by anyone designing, constructing, and managing complex, large-scale building projects, properties, and real estate portfolios.
The OS+ED is planned opposite the Amway Center in downtown Orlando, where the Orlando Magic play basketball, and will include a 300-room hotel, 420,000 square feet of offices, 80,000 square feet of event space, more than 100,000 square feet of retail, and an open-air plaza.
It will be a fully interconnected Smart District, using state-of-the-art IoT, Digital Twin and AI Technologies to transform the four-block urban core, west of the I-4 Highway.
Cityzenith CEO Michael Jansen said: “I’m delighted to sign with SISCO to launch the visionary OS+ED project. Efforts are already underway to develop a hi-res 3D Digital Twin model of the core project site, the 130-acre OS+ED Smart District site, and the surrounding urban neighborhood, which will encompass most of Orlando. The result will be the most-advanced and feature-rich 3D Digital Twin model of a city in the United States.
“It is our first major project of this scale in America and will highlight how SmartWorldPro2 is able to integrate with SISCO’s IoT, artificial intelligence, smart building, and other technologies to deliver a comprehensive Digital Twin-enabled, Smart Connected Community Integrated Operating System (SCCiOS) for large building owners and operators.”
Job #1 for SCCiOS will be attracting tenants and visitors to downtown Orlando venues for a ‘wow, it feels like I’m really there’ 3D District Experience, delivering an unprecedented wealth of information and connected services. The pioneering work could also unlock additional contracts for Cityzenith on other SISCO projects totaling up to $1,000,000 by the end of 2021.
Phil Tinsley, CEO of the OS+ED Dev Corp, said: “The project is a highly programmed, high amenity development where residents, visitors and tenants experience Living-as-a-Service (LaaSTM) the first bundled entertainment, ticketing, hospitality, housing, transportation, food and beverage, wellness, and utilities platform of its kind in the US.
“We chose Cityzenith’s SmartWorldPro2 Digital Twin to best demonstrate and bring this data rich experience to life and are thrilled to be its first major US user.”
Tinsley predicted that tenants and residents would particularly love the easy-to-use ‘single-pane-of-glass’ software platform, accessing all the information they need when they need it, adding:
“SmartWorldPro2’s unique features will first create an online virtual 3D tour like no other; a video game-like experience where visitors navigate to and click on elements in a life-like 3D OS+ED model to see event times, retail offers, parking availability, and even the view from their hotel rooms or stadium seats.”
Michael Jansen added: “The OS+ED is high-profile, forward thinking, and transformational, and the contract is a huge victory for us, while also boosting our Cityzenith ‘Clean Cities – Clean Future’ mission.
“Currently, 10,000 cities produce 70% of global greenhouse emissions and just 100 – megalopolises like New York, Tokyo, London and Paris – produce 25% of that total.
“It must change and SmartWorldPro2’s ability to create digitally-twinned cities to inventory GHG emissions and streamline sustainable urban redevelopment initiatives makes it the platform of choice for executing energy transition projects on any scale, whether a district, a campus, a city, or an entire country.
“Please join us on our journey and watch for more updates as SmartWorldPro2 marches towards cleaning and freeing our cities for a better future.”
Cityzenith’s launched last month its Regulation A+ Crowdfunding Investment Round
