How PKL went on to become the biggest Kabaddi league?
Pro Kabaddi League or PKL is the biggest and most popular professional Kabaddi tournament hosted in India. Launched in 2014, PKL features top international men kabaddi stars, who go under the hammer every season in the PKL auction. The tournament is the second most watched sports league in India after the very popular Indian Premier League. While the league is broadcast on Star Sports, there are various online platforms that provide kabaddi fanatics with the PKL live score. The idea of PKL came into life after the popularity of the sport at the 2006 edition of the Asian Games.
Ever since the IPL has become popular in the Indian subcontinent, several sports came up with a league-based tournament, and PKL was no different. Like the cash-rich cricket league, PKL also follows a franchise-based model and was first hosted in 2014 with the participation of eight teams. Since kabaddi was less popular than cricket and had fans at grassroot levels in India, there were doubts whether the league would sustain or not. However, Indian fans as well as sports lovers across the globe adopted PKL and soon, the sport got fans in regions where the sport wasn’t much popular earlier.
The best part about PKL has always been the thrill it offers to fans and audience. Since its inception a decade ago, the league hasn’t seen one champion team every season. For example, Patna Pirates has won the tournament three times, consecutively. On the other hand, teams like Jaipur Pink Panthers have been crowned champions twice, while names like U Mumba, Bengaluru Bulls, Bengal Warriors, Dabang Delhi K.C and Puneri Paltan have won one title once.
The 2024 season of the PKL is set to begin on October 18 in Hyderabad. Unlike past editions, PKL Season 11 will have a three-destination format instead of the traditional 12-destination format in 2024. The first leg of the tournament will unfold in Hyderabad before the action moves to Noida Indoor Stadium and then Balewadi Badminton Stadium in Pune. The dates of the play-offs will be announced later along with their venues. Those who cannot travel but don’t wish to miss out on the action can rely on several media platforms for kabaddi live score. Earlier, League Commissioner Anupam Gosawmi expressed his excitement about the upcoming edition of the PKL 2024. He highlighted the potential of the forthcoming edition to elevate Kabaddi’s status further domestically and globally. He said, "After successfully completing 10 seasons, PKL Season 11 will mark a new milestone in the continued rise of the league. This would strengthen the growth of Kabaddi in India and elsewhere around the world."
PKL 2024 auction
In the auction for the next season, several players underwent bidding war in Mumbai, which shattered several records. A total of eight players secured bids of more than INR 1 Crore. Sachin Tanwar who was sold to Tamil Thalaivas, became the most expensive player with a bid of INR 2.15 Crore. Following him was Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh, who was sold to Haryana Steelers for INR 2.07 Crore. Other than him, Guman Singh (Gujarat Giants), Pawan Sehrawat (Telugu Titans), Bharat (UP Yoddhas), Maninder Singh (Bengal Warriors), Ajinkya Ashok Pawar (Bengaluru Bulls), and Sunil Kumar (U Mumba) secured bids of more than INR 1 Crore.

[ad_1] Mr. E Prasad Rao, affectionately known as “Kabaddi Rao”, Technical Director of PKL Since its inception in 2014, the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) has revolutionized the sport of kabaddi, making it more accessible and engaging for fans. As PKL celebrates a decade of progress, Mr. E Prasad Rao, affectionately known as “Kabaddi Rao” and the Technical Director of the league, reflected on the significant strides made in refereeing over the past 10 years. With Season 11 set to kick off on October 18, where the Telugu Titans will face the Bengaluru Bulls at the GMCB Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, Rao and his team recently conducted an intensive camp from October 1 to 14. The camp trained 45 referees, including eight female officials and 20 first-time participants—a marked increase from the previous season’s 37 referees. “I was involved with PKL from the very beginning, helping to shape the rules and regulations to enhance the game’s appeal,” Rao reminisced. His early role was crucial in laying the foundation for the league’s structured and professional approach to officiating, which has evolved significantly over the years. One of the key advancements has been the development of a formalized training program for referees. “The concept of formal referee training courses and workshops came about after PKL’s inception,” Rao explained. “It’s not just about getting a certification and blowing a whistle anymore. We’re teaching officials to truly understand their role.” This shift toward comprehensive training has been a game-changer for kabaddi officiating. PKL has also led the way in adopting technological innovations, particularly the introduction of the TV umpire. “PKL was the first to introduce TV umpiring in kabaddi,” Rao proudly stated. This addition has greatly enhanced the accuracy of decisions in the fast-paced nature of the game. The league’s commitment to high standards is evident in its meticulous training process. “We’ve created specialized roles and functional areas for officials. For instance, we now have four line umpires, a position that didn’t exist in kabaddi before,” Rao detailed. This specialization ensures more precise and fair decisions during matches. Physical and mental fitness has become a major focus for the referees. “Our training sessions start early, focusing on physical fitness. We work on specific skills like reaction time and agility, which are crucial for keeping up with kabaddi’s dynamic nature,” Rao said. In addition to physical drills, the training regimen includes innovative methods like yoga to help referees maintain composure and make clear-headed decisions during high-pressure situations. “We’ve integrated yoga sessions into our training regimen,” Rao revealed, underscoring the holistic approach PKL has taken to enhance referee performance. Communication is another key area of improvement. “We’re working with speech experts to help referees communicate effectively and uniformly,” Rao said, emphasizing the importance of clear signaling and consistent verbal cues during matches. PKL’s emphasis on referee development has had a ripple effect beyond the league, influencing both national and international kabaddi bodies. “We’re seeing state associations and even international organizations conducting similar workshops now,” Rao noted. “There’s a growing recognition of the importance of referee training.” Looking ahead, Rao emphasized the central role officiating plays in the league’s success. “Good refereeing and judgment are crucial for the success of any competition,” he asserted, highlighting how improved officiating has not only raised the standard of the matches but also fostered greater respect for referees among players and fans. As the Pro Kabaddi League embarks on its second decade, the evolution of refereeing stands as a testament to its pursuit of excellence. With continued innovation in training and technology, the standard of officiating in kabaddi is set to rise even further in the coming years.
PKL Season 11 will be broadcast live on the Star Sports Network and streamed on Disney+ Hotstar starting October 18. The post A Decade of Growth: The Evolution of Refereeing in the Pro Kabaddi League appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports. [ad_2] Source link
