I think i got bit by bed bugs-

So last night I found a bug in my bathroom.

And I’d seen that kind of bug before in my house a couple times over the last year and thought it was a tick. But this time I used a bug identifying app to identify it.

And it said it was a bed bug.

So my first thought is, “Oh no, I have a bed bug infestation somewhere in my house that’s so bad they’ve shown up on the opposite side of my house nowhere near a bed or couch or chair or anything like that.”

And so I start looking for bed bugs everywhere. In the same bathroom, I found one other one sitting in a chair in the corner on top of a new shower curtain I haven’t put up yet. Both were alive.

So I look all through that curtain and don’t find another. Then I check the one that’s on the shower and none there either (this is not the shower I use, so it hasn’t been run in well over a year).

Then I look in the tub and there’s about a dozen of the little guys in there. But on further inspection they seem to be dead. Like they’re not coming from the tub, just a few fell in and got trapped. So I wash those down the drain.

I then go through every other place in the house they might be and find nothing. All I can think is maybe they’re living in the attic and there are some critters in there. Because I’m not getting bitten and I only found one on me once (and discounting the dead ones in the tub, only like 6 total so far).

So I text my mom about it in case they came from or spread to the furniture at their house, but she’s asleep so I go to bed.

Then I wake up and my mom has sent me a link to “bat bug vs bed bug”.

So I had a bat in my house a while ago. No idea how it got in but I presumed it somehow got in somehow somewhere and ended up in the space between the ceiling and floor and then got out through a recessed lighting fixture or something.

But before I saw the bat, I heard scurrying in the ceiling and thought it was a mouse. Turned out it was a bat.

Since that night, I have heard scurrying in the ceiling just like that bat a few times.

So I think there are bats living in my attic and now I’m even more afraid to go up and look, lol.

Good news: no bed bugs probably

Bad news: bats??! 🦇

Honestly it kinda goes with my aesthetic and they’re really cute but I should probably get rid of them so they don’t give me a new COVID or something???

As someone who also really likes most bugs, I gotta say I do not know how bedbugs reproduce and now I'm gonna avoid learning it simply so I can hopefully learn it from you someday!

Man found dead eaten by bed bugs

The family of Lashawn Thompson, 35, is calling for a criminal investigation into Thompson’s death and for the closure and replacement of a local jail after alleging that Thompson died in custody from bed bugs in a squalid jail cell.

Thompson was incarcerated at the Fulton county Jail in Atlanta on a misdemeanour charge. Jail officials had placed Thompson in the facility’s psychiatric unit after determining that he had mental health issues, but noted that he was physically healthy.

On 13 September 2022, three months after being arrested, Thompson was discovered dead inside a dilapidated cell covered in grime and insects. The cell was so filthy that an employee wore a hazmat suit upon entering.

“They left him there essentially,” said Michael Harper, a lawyer representing the Thompson family, “and they had a plan to take him to the medical observation unit, but their plan never happened, and they found him dead, eaten by these bed bugs.”

Thompson’s family, who live in Alabama, had not known Thompson was incarcerated and only found out when authorities notified them about his death.  Authorities were not able to resuscitate Thompson in his cell. A later autopsy did not determine a cause of death but noted that there were “extremely severe” infestation of small insects on Thompson’s body and a “severe bed bug infestation” in Thompson’s cell. The report also confirmed that Thompson had signs of cuts and wounds along his body from picking his skin. Graphic photos released by Harper show the horrific condition of Thompson’s cell and Thompson covered in bugs.

Brad McCrae, Thompson’s brother, said that the family found the photos distressing to look at during a press conference on Thursday, WSB-TV reported. “It was heart-breaking because nobody should be seen like that. Nobody should see that,” said McCrae.

In a statement to the WSB-TV, the Fulton county sheriff’s office said that they had launched a full investigation into Thompson’s death and had committed $500,000 to address vermin outbreaks in the jail. The sheriff’s office added that after an investigation, the Georgia bureau of investigations would determine if any criminal charges are warranted. The family said that while they appreciated efforts to improve jail conditions, more needed to be done.

“If you look at those pictures, how deplorable that jail cell was, how did they get to that point in the first place?” said Harper “It’s not fit for an animal.”
