life of eli
This is Carmela Elaine L. Ballesteros, if you believe my name is too long, you can call me Kelly or Eli, as my parents and close friends do. My name Carmela Elaine is inspired from the names of my grandmothers Carmen and Ellen. My name should be Hiraya Manawari, which means "I hope it happens," not Carmela Elaine. On April 13, 2005, I was born at the home of my adoring grandmother. I am 17 years old and am enrolled in the Humanities and Social Science strand at Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite. I'm an only child, however on my father's side, I have a step brother and sister. My parents' names are Alwin and Angelina Ballesteros. Even though I'm alone, I am blessed with many adorable cousins with whom I can hang out, hug, and talk anytime I'm down. And I also have friends who you can trust on for anything, people who are genuine and will never abandon me; their names are Airie, Matthea, Erica, James, and Lorraine, and I consider myself really fortunate to have the not so perfect perfect group of friends.
I live in Villa Fatima Subdivision, Barangay Bucandala IV, Imus City, Cavite. I've been here since I was a child, and we call me "Kuya Al's Daughter" or "Sec Angie's Daughter." I used to like sports like badminton and volleyball as a hobby when I was younger. I also enjoy reading books; formerly, I read fairy tales, but now I read self-growth books to help me clear my mind and maintain a positive outlook. In terms of music, I grew up listening to Post Malone, Travis Scott, Drake, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B, among other artists! I also like the old songs written by Parokya ni Edgar, Eraserheads,Spongecola, Silent sanctuary and others because I was inspired by mom.
As time passes as I become older, I'm learning and discovering new things. I've learnt and comprehended a lot of things that used to upset me when I was younger and that I can now answer. The world is vast, and I must embrace it. In four years, I'll be a full-fledged psychologist, and I'll be able to tell myself, "You made it, Doctora."

Jesus Estil, the captain of Fatima Dos Village in Cavite, joined a Zoom conference along with the village council last week to discuss his plans for the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Coconuts Manila.
However, Estil allegedly pushed the wrong button and did not close his camera. Then, he stood up and approached a woman who later performed a sexual act on him.
Some residents of the village created a petition calling for the chairman to resign, the New York Post reported.
“It is not right as the leader of our barangay,” one villager told reporters, according to Asia One. He should be like a father to us and lead by example to his constituents.”
Both the chairman and treasurer reportedly ended up resigning, according to Jorge Magno, president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in the city.

Preparedness is a MUST
Tumblr media
Brgy. Sta. Cruz is one of the 16 barangays of Antipolo city. It comprises of various sitios wherein 50% of the population is residential, 40% is vacant and 10% is for commercial use. Since half of the area is residential, safety of the people should be considered especially during disasters. That’s why, I took the time to research about the hazards present in the barangay as well as their preparedness for the unlikely situations that may happen by interviewing some of the members of their BDRRM team and surveying some of the sitios. I was able to talk to Sir Joselito U. Soria, one of the members of the team, with some inputs from their team leader which is Ma’am Marissa S. Dela Rosa.
Tumblr media
Interview with Sir Jocelito
Tumblr media
Photo op with Ma’am Marissa and some members of the team
The first thing that I asked about their barangay was the different disasters that they’ve experienced before, Sir Joselito cited that the barangay experiences typhoon, landslides (which resulted from the typhoon), fires and road accidents which is the most common. He then identified the different hotpots or places they watch out for that are prone to landslides during typhoons. Those places are Blue Mountain, Maria Corazon tree and Sitio Cacalog.
Tumblr media
Blue Mountain (hazardous place for landslide). Photo grabbed from https://www.fatima.edu.ph/campus/our-lady-of-fatima-antipolo/
Despite these calamities, he said that they have a sort of effective communication line in knowing if there is a typhoon coming that’s why damages and injuries are minimized. Aside from news updates, they primarily get their information and announcements from city based communication team then it would be relayed to the different rescue teams of the barangays via their radio phones then the announcement would be passed to the heads of the sitios.
As I’ve mentioned above, damages and injuries are minimized. But if the calamity is so strong, the usual effects of it are property damages especially those houses near steep areas and injuries (death is very rare for them). He even told me a story that last year, they rescued a male child in Sitio Cacalog because of a landslide. I then asked him if there are evacuation areas and open areas around the barangay that would be used if needed. He confidently answered that there are numerous open areas and 7 covered courts around.
Tumblr media
one of their 7 covered courts
I mentioned if they have BDRRM Plans and Projects, Hazard and Safety Map and other documents to further gather data about their preparedness. Sir Jocelito said that BDRRM plans still needs to be requested from the barangay administrator while their Hazard and Safety Map was damaged recently and they’re on the process of replacing it with a new one. But he told me the for the projects, the barangay conducts earthquake drills, fire drills and even rescue drills approximately every 2-3 months. Lastly, he said that the biggest challenge they’re encountering is the lack of budget. He honestly told me that they lack rescue tools and equipment, even their rescue boat right now is not in use because it has been damaged already.
Tumblr media
their current tools and equipment
The lack of budget especially in DRRM Plans and Projects has been a problem not just for our barangay but also to other barangays as well. It’s even evident in nationwide departments such as PAGASA ( Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) wherein some of their weather forecasters go abroad because of the small wage they receive and the shutdown of Project Noah, an online website wherein information about hazards and other things about every area in the Philippines would be readily available to everyone. The national and local government should prioritize and allocate budget on this area because disasters greatly affect people’s lives and livelihood if risks and hazards are not mitigated. Preparedness is a must.
As I end this blog, I learned the importance on being knowledgeable on the DRRM situation of our barangay (and also our country) because it propels us to do actions about the things that are lacking and the practices that needs to be improved. I realize that everyone in the community has a role to fulfill and cooperation among each other is vital in the preparedness of the barangay. Lastly, there’s a need to call the attention of national and local leaders to support DRRM plans and projects by means of money for a more progressive country.

Situbo Falls, Tampilisan
Tumblr media
Tucked in the wilderness of laidback Tampilisan in the province of Zamboanga del Norte hid the grandeur of Situbo Falls, some 12km southeast from the town proper.
Tumblr media
Situbo Falls boasts a turquoise cold pool on fine weather, its depth enough for a dive. Yes, I did took a dive. Had I been told about crocs sighting beneath prior I would have hesitated, but I wasn't and all the kids swim around and so I did - a refreshing reward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The famed towering cascade is fed by the rivers of Godod that exits between Liloy & Salug. It is said to be the grandest waterfall in the province. Situbo Falls is a classic example of a horsetail waterfall: a waterfall wherein the cascading water still makes contact with the bedrock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DIFFICULTY.
The approx 50mins habal-habal ride from the town proper can be unforgiving with its winding, mostly undeveloped roads so expect a bumpy ride, and when I say bumpy I mean it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trek to the riverbank from the lot where you can park your vehicles (jump-off point) is already established and ain't rugged at all but the descent on the steps made of soil (yes, steps were made to get downhill) can get challenging depending on weather conditions. But it's manageable making the place family friendly for outdoor adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHAT TO WEAR.
The ride is long & rough and you better have a jacket, long sleeves or whatever you prefer to take cover from the heat of the sun and a facemask. You may bring extra clothing for a change after a dip in the waters.
HOW TO GET THERE
(for laagans with own vehicle)
We were first-timers as well but the waterfall is pretty renowned which means it's fine to come on your own. You can rely on the locals for directions on the main road or save this google map http://bit.ly/SituboFallsMap
***The road is accessible even by a four-wheeled vehicle. Perfect for family/barkada outing
However, from the jump-off point, there are barely locals to possibly meet and no houses nearby so you better trust your sense of direction with the established trail.
I hope the following snapshots will help you figure the way to go:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
***Basically, Situbo Falls is just a few meters ahead of the Situbo Nat’l High School then the Barangay Hall. Knowing that should make asking for directions easier.
SAFETY.
Truth be told my family fear rebels, too, and in no way wish to encounter them. For my mama, Situbo Falls means adventure in the unknown wilderness and assumptions that they are present in the area are given.
The only reason I only managed to convince my family for permission now is that I've spent the recent years venturing the unknown with or without permission and still breaths.
***Register your names at the Barangay Hall of Situbo that you'd pass along the way for safety purposes. Adventure at your own risk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ITINERARY.
Time given is approximate estimates depending on your pace.
10:30AM: Depart from Fatima, Liloy 11:00AM: ETA at Tampilisan proper 11:45AM: ETA at Jump-Off 11:55AM: ETA Situbo River (name unofficial, idk the river name tbh) 12:00PM: ETA Situbo Falls 3:00PM: Homebound 9:30PM: Home Sweet Home (after some side trips, tehee)
SUMMARY/NOTES.
-Practice the LEAVE NO TRACE principles. Bring back home your trash -Very remote area. -No houses, stores or locals nearby. -No comfort rooms. -No signage for directions. -Bring your own water. -Be sure to bring lunch or food. -Direct heat of the sun. Wear something! -Opt for footwears you can bring underwater with great traction if you plan to swim. My brother managed with his slippers tho -Baby-friendly (brought a one year old with us hehe) -approx 50min ride from Tampilisan proper/bus terminal (number of times we lost our way included) -spotted only one roadside fuel vendor. make sure to travel full tank

I spent quite a time sunbathing with this bamboo raft the kids put up for everyone. Too bad, I don't have a drone for aerial shots.

Situbo Falls is a sight to behold. Unfortunately, it wasn’t showing off its full beauty during our visit, a spell caused by the dry season.

GenSan allots P25-M for construction of city crematorium
#PHnews: GenSan allots P25-M for construction of city crematorium
GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The city government has allotted around PHP25 million for the construction of its own crematorium to provide a more affordable burial alternative for deceased residents.
Mary Ann Bacar, head of the City Housing and Land Management Office (CHLMO), said Wednesday the project is part of the continuing expansion and improvement of the city cemetery or the Antonio C. Acharon Memorial Park (ACAMP) in Barangay Fatima.
The local government had designated an area within 5.9-hectare ACAMP, which is supervised by CHLMO, as site of the planned city crematorium.
“The project will be implemented this year and there is already an approved budget for it,” Bacar said in an interview over Brigada News FM here.
The CHLMO initially proposed in 2014 for the construction of a crematorium, which gained positive feedback from local residents and city officials, including Mayor Ronnel Rivera.
Bacar earlier said the project is aimed to offer an alternative to the traditional burial practices and will mainly benefit the poor residents.
The Monte Cielo Eternal Garden, the city’s first crematorium, currently offers cremation services for PHP25,000.
Aside from the construction of the crematorium, Bacar said they will put up additional common and individual bone chambers inside the ACAMP.
She said they expect the completion and turnover within this month of the ongoing construction of 1,000 additional “apartment-type” niches at the facility.
The concreting of the access road from the national highway to the memorial park is also due for completion within the year, she said.
The official said the additional niches and facilities at ACAMP will mainly benefit the poor or indigent residents based on the guidelines adopted by the local government under Ordinance No. 20, series of 2012.
She said qualified “underprivileged” residents only need to pay PHP3,000 for an “apartment-type” unit, which may be used for five years.
The remains will be exhumed after the allotted period and would be transferred to the common or individual bone chambers, she added. (PNA)

A Day in Life
//Once Upon an Immersion//
Tumblr media
It was all doe-eyed faces that turned towards us as we enter inside the room. It was just an hour after noon when the scorching-hot sun took over the covered court of Barangay Fatima II that left us dripping in sweat with nothing to do. Keeping in mind that something must be written on our Daily Task Activity Sheet, Joie, Christine, Kat, Jenny and I took our courage out of our sleeves and volunteered to help at the Day Care Center. Little did I know, that the cheers, screams, laughter and cries, and all our woes inside, would made me realize how far we really are from getting a better education system and environment for the future of our land.
Starting with an introduction, the teacher asked us to stand before the children to tell our names and what they should call us. Speaking at the front never felt so relieving knowing that the audience you are dealing with are little kids with smiles bigger than their faces seeing new people. After that short segment, Mrs.Japson gave us our very first task of helping the children coloring an activity on their book, an easy task anyone could go through. Giving the sunshine back to the children, I went all smiles to the students at the last row, as if they were waiting and the seat was solely dedicated to me.
There I sat beside a little boy named Zildjian, a wide-eyed boy, smaller than most of the children. My heart was pumped by both the noise of the children, which sounded little noisier due to our appearance, or so I thought, and by the thought of creating good times with these children, and also by the small voice coming from this boy on my side telling me he has a fire truck, a police car, and an excavator at home, which the latter took me some time to figure out what it was. Other children were coloring by themselves or not at all, running around or playing with their classmates. Being preoccupied in my own little world, the children on my table were whom all my attention were laid, as they ask me questions about myself, or about their activity. Keeping up my communication with the children, I asked them in a voice I don’t seem to own, too soft for my liking, what colors should they use or are using. Zildjian, through my endless efforts of persuasion, did not do what he had to do, that made me notice how he had not done most of the activities his classmates were through with throughout the entirety of their school year. No matter how many times I tell him to do his activity, he gets through time just by talking of the same thing over and over again, or playing. After an hour, another activity was set by the teacher, an activity of answering some letters and coloring, again.
A little while after, amazement and shock took cirlcles in my mind when the helper in the center told the children that it is already time for their meal. There was no such thing during my time, and seeing this arrangement brings light to my mind knowing that children could be taught of table manners, and of enjoyment for vegetables, or just finishing their food. It was fulfilling how changes, like this one, had occurred over the past years on kindergartens because during my time, money played a large role during our break time and we had our sari, where we used to buy biscuits, and junk food if in any case we cannot afford those zesto juice or moo milk chocolate. The children ate together, though some had to be helped to eat. After their meal, a story time was held and I happen to have a little courage to give it out to the children. I told a story of “Mariang Sinukuan,” which some of the children listen attentively, and some barely paying attention until their time to go home came.
When time passed by like a wind, I started to notice things inside the classroom that bothered that little voice at the back of my head. Little things that could grow to bigger trees and branches of quandaries, they could have troubles with once they grew up. Even with the nicest of our ways and the prettiest of our smiles, some children talked to us like we were same at age, and did not bother to use “po” and “opo” while talking. In return, reminding these children the usage of these words as sign of courtesy and respect was the way I took during those times. Encouraging them to use these respectful words in our culture, may be of help to them even in those littlest times of discourse.
Another was the distinction or segregation of children into those who are excelling at studies and those who are not. Those who were considered good by the teacher were seated together on another table, and we, volunteers, were not suggested to help them. Even at earliest age, categories, hidden labels or groups, are made like every American high school-themed movie that were probably unnoticed by most. These creates a separation in a subtle manner, resembling how row 1, row 2 and row 3 labels existed during elementary days.
Further is how enclosed the children were to the creation of their activities on their book. Their energy as high as a charged battery, were converted into running around and hurting each other, instead of using them in ways where they will learn new things while using their energy. AT every start of their class, were the only times their energy would be intentionally used during their exercise and flag ceremony singing. Sometimes even, it was the helper who writes the works of the students just so that they would finish. It was also worrisome how I first hand saw bullying of children with their own classmates. A sting in the heart that creates sharp pain, even made me almost tear up.  Matthew, who was like Zildjian, seemed stranger than his classmates, probably because he was the only child who speaks more in English rather than Filipino, even he knows how to. He would spent his time under the table, and did not even talked to us when he was asked questions. He would be smacked in the head, by his classmates when they are walking past him, which made me frustrated most of the times. At some point, I even made the boy who had hurt Matthew cry, by telling him that what he has done was something bad. I tried carefully not to tell him that he was bad, but what he did was what is bad. Hearing his answer on why he was doing that, really showed the complexity of life and how another person’s action could affect another person’s perspective and behavior. Holding him in my arms and putting him on my lap while eagerly attentive to his story, he told me that he was only doing that as his brother does that to him. Instead of teaching manners, human etiquette, sportsmanship and good conducts at such young age, students only learn the basics of addition, multiplication, parts of the body etc., which are also necessary but nonetheless, equal on all accounts. Throughout my time at the day care center, never did they have a physical education activity that requires them to use their physical build, or activities that would build up their characters involving some mental or physical fun.
The way gender roles are imposed to these little children also grinds my gears. Though not necessarily represents the whole community of kindergarten classes, this reflects the reality of planting gender roles on the minds of our children. One swift move and running around the room of a girl, or she playing with her boy classmates was called-out telling she should be proper and behave and be not “like a boy.” One time, she brought a gun-like toy that made sounds when pulled the trigger and was told that the toy was only for boys. And as a source of discouragement to that position and a non-conformist to norms regarding gender roles, I whispered in her ear that she can be whoever she wants and her ways are not for boys only because boys should be behaved too, and play only during free time.
Another sentiment, is that the way the people at the center talks and approaches the children. Perhaps these are the common ways for children this many, I found shouting at children, comparing them, using tones that might sound as discouraging, unnecessary. It really is hard to handle small people with mostly two persons over 30 children, and probably this would be the best way to control and handle a class of kindergartens. But I sculpted on my mind that children are very sensitive to such and things could be handled in ways that would not devalue the children’s thought of themselves. With patience as the essential key of teaching children become better persons, the teacher did not fail to weigh things in and out, give out compliments that would boost her students’ confidence and encourage them to continue what they are doing.
Ages less than 3 years is the most crucial years of a life of a person. This is thought to be the foundation of these people through their lives, which can greatly affect their personalities as they grow up. Needless to say, it is neither the fault of the teachers nor helpers that these things happen. Yes, the world is a classroom full of kindergartens, it’s chaotic, mostly unorganized but are also filled with beautiful lives, dreams and stories to be written, we do not need more of the cruelties of those specially our children. It is in the fault of the system that creates the environment of the children they have today. Gone, or never have ever even existed, is the system where the quality of the education is treasured, rather than the number of graduates produced. Where “manners maketh man,” and our patience and hard work brings out all the shine everyone has.
This opportunity for experience greatly showed me how people are different and in disarray, yet so beautifully created, even when fragmented. Not so long ago, I used to dislike being appointed at the barangay for it was such a drowning and heel-dragging work, but being reminded of what I learned, or what I hoped others had learned, makes every drop of sweat worth it.

Hunt on for killers of soldier, 3 others in Maguindanao ambush
#PHnews: Hunt on for killers of soldier, 3 others in Maguindanao ambush
COTABATO CITY – Police pursuit operations are ongoing against a group of armed men who ambushed and killed four persons on Saturday afternoon in Maguindanao.
In his report to the police provincial office, investigator-on-case Police S/Sgt. Michael Lacsasa said the victims were on board a white multicab vehicle (MAB 2431) traversing the national highway in Barangay Tulunan of Datu Anggal Midtimbang town when ambushed by unidentified gunmen at 3:45 p.m.
Lacsasa identified the victims through their identification cards as Army Pfc. Heredin K. Kanakan, of Barangay Sta. Cruz, Koronadal City, Heredin Kamidon of Cotabato City, Fatima Usman of Muntinlupa City, and a still unidentified woman.
“We found 14 empty shells for (the) M16 rifle and .45-caliber pistol at the ambush site,” he said.
Also found from the slain victims were three sachets of suspected shabu items.
Lacsasa said they have “persons of interest” linked to the attack but declined to divulge further details pending police follow-up operations. (PNA)
