#B.A. is the best at budgeting

you say you're not complaining but you really ought to complain about the plight of american teachers. of all the american teachers i know, all levels and teaching diverse subjects, zero of them get paid enough or respected at all tbh. :(
This is all true, yeah. In that post I was trying to acknowledge that compared to some, I have a few advantages. I'm in California, which has one of the better teachers unions. The 1.20 pay I mentioned is rather good, and I did that to myself by keeping all of my old classes when I added my new guitar ensemble. And fortunately for me I'm in my subject of passion.
But the baseline salary compared to most B.A.+ requiring positions is still rather abysmal. The benefits are there but they still take a lot of our take-home pay. Our department budgets are constantly tiny no matter what area we're in, and these charter schools keep draining our best kids off into segregated systems, and the former of those two points is a result of the latter.
All of this adds up to a rather undesirable position. It's no wonder there's such a shortage - passion can only get us so far.

BEST DIRECTORS IN CINEMA- 6
Hi everyone! This blog is going to be the 6th part of the 8 part series who I think are the Best Director Cinema has ever seen
And today I will be talking about
FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA
Francis Ford Coppola (born April 7, 1939, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.) is an American motion-picture director, writer, and producer whose films range from sweeping epics to small-scale character studies. As the director of films such as The Godfather (1972), The Conversation (1974), and Apocalypse Now (1979), he enjoyed his greatest success and influence in the 1970s, when he attempted to create an alternative to the Hollywood system of film production and distribution.
(Early Life)
Coppola’s father, Carmine, a frustrated composer who played flute in several orchestras, including Arturo Toscanini’s NBC Symphony orchestra, settled his family in the New York City area. Coppola grew up in and around Queens and in Great Neck, on Long Island. Confined to bed with polio at age nine, he devised puppet shows for his own entertainment and soon began making 8-mm films. After earning a B.A. in drama from Hofstra University, he pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of California at Los Angeles, studying filmmaking. During that period Coppola began working for noted low-budget exploitation-film producer-director Roger Corman, for whose American International Pictures he performed second-unit photography and direction, among other tasks. One of Coppola’s first projects was writing dialogue to be dubbed into his reedited versions of a pair of Russian-made films that became The Magic Voyage of Sinbad and Battle Beyond the Sun (both 1962). While on location in Ireland, Coppola persuaded Corman to put up $20,000 to bankroll his first directorial effort, Dementia 13 (1963), a gory horror film based on a script that Coppola had hastily written. After contributing to the scripts of This Property Is Condemned and Is Paris Burning? (both 1966) as a contract writer for Seven Arts, Coppola wrote and directed the charming coming-of-age tale You’re a Big Boy Now (also 1966), which served as his master’s thesis film. Short on plot but rich with incident, it was the story of a virginal young man (played by Peter Kastner) looking for love while in the employ of the New York Public Library.
(His Famous Works)
Coppola's reputation as a filmmaker was cemented with the release of The Godfather (1972), which revolutionized the gangster genre[13] of filmmaking, receiving strong commercial and critical reception. The Godfather won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with Mario Puzo). The Godfather Part II (1974) became the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.Other notable films Coppola has released since the start of the 1980s include the dramas The Outsiders and Rumble Fish (both 1983), The Cotton Club (1984), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), The Godfather Part III (1990), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and The Rainmaker (1997). Coppola has acted as producer on such diverse films as American Graffiti (1973), The Black Stallion (1979), The Escape Artist (1982), Hammett (1982), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and The Secret Garden (1993).
(Filmmaking Style)
His Filmmaking Style
Coppola’s style is defined by its versatility and innovation. He employs a wide range of cinematographic techniques, from intricate framing and innovative camera movements to innovative lighting designs. His films are known for their striking visuals that complement the thematic depth of his narratives.

DAVID N. DINKINS (1927-2020)
David N. Dinkins is best known as the first black mayor of New York City. In November 1989, he defeated his challenger, former federal prosecutor Rudolph (Rudy) Giuliani, to become the first African American mayor of New York City. Giuliani. in a 1993 rematch, defeated Dinkins, thus limiting him to one four-year term in office.
David Norman Dinkins was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1927. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps at eighteen, and served from 1945 until the end of World War II. After the war, he attended Howard University, graduating with a B.A. in mathematics in 1950. Dinkins moved to New York City, and received a law degree from the Brooklyn Law School in 1956. He was a member of Sigma Pi Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternities
David Dinkins’s political career began when he joined the Carver Club headed by a charismatic politician, J. Raymond Jones, who was known as the Harlem Fox. Dinkins befriended three up-and-coming black New York politicians, Charles Rangel, Basil Paterson Sr., and Percy Sutton. In 1965, Dinkins won his first electoral office, a seat in the New York State Assembly. Shortly afterwards, Dinkins was offered the position of deputy mayor of New York, by Mayor Abraham Beam. Dinkins was unable to accept the post after it was revealed that he had not paid income taxes for the previous four years.
Dinkins did manage to secure the position of city clerk for New York, which he held from 1975 to 1985. On his third run for the office, Dinkins was elected Manhattan’s borough president in 1985. In 1989, Dinkins decided to run for mayor of New York. He surprised political observers by defeating three-time incumbent, Mayor Ed Koch, in the Democratic primaries. Despite facing a strong Republican challenger in former federal prosecutor Rudolph Giuliani, Dinkins narrowly won the mayor’s race.

Dinkins presided over a city well known for its municipal crises. His term, however, was particularly turbulent because of an unprecedented crack epidemic, and the resulting drug wars that swept through the city. The most seriously affected were the impoverished African American and Puerto Rican neighborhoods, that formed the core of Dinkins’s constituency. The crack epidemic also spawned a crime wave that exacerbated racial tensions.
Two episodes particularly tested the mayor’s ability to be an effective municipal leader. In 1989, shortly after Dinkins took office, a young white woman was allegedly raped and brutalized by marauding black youth in Central Park. Months later, a black teenager was murdered, when he ventured into a white ethnic Brooklyn neighborhood. In both episodes, Dinkins calmed racial tensions, and earned an image as a peacemaker. Although Dinkins presided over a decrease in crime in the city, balanced the city budget by turning a $1.8 billion dollar deficit into a $200 million surplus, and maintained racial peace after the Rodney King verdict sparked rioting in a number of cities across the nation, he never completely shed his image as an ineffective political leader. The 1993 election proved a political rematch of 1989. This time, however, Rudolph Giuliani narrowly defeated David Dinkins for the mayor’s position.
Former Mayor Dinkins accepted a professorship at Columbia University’s Center for Urban Research and Policy in 1994. Although he had endorsed various political candidates, and clashed with fellow New Yorker and presidential aspirant Al Sharpton, Dinkins sought no further elective office.
David N. Dinkins passed away in his Manhattan home on November 23, 2020, at the age of 93. His wife Joyce had predeceased him in October 2020.

Samuel Walters College is an independent comprehensive liberal arts college, recognized for excellence in a variety of fields, and listed among the leading regional colleges by U.S. News & World Report and Barron's Best Buys in College Education.
You just know this place is gonna be fucking ridiculous.
Founded in 1914, SWC’s 165-acre campus overlooks Greenway Valley Reservoir, and is located 50 miles east of Ellis City, with its population of 275,000.
SWC offers 52 B.A. programs, 15 M.A. programs, and various professional certificate programs taught by 250 full-time faculty and 400 adjuncts. Full-time undergraduate tuition is $31,000 and room and board costs are approximately $14,000 annually. The student body consists of 6,250 students, 4,500 of whom are undergraduates. Nearly 3,000 live on campus. SWC employs 475 faculty members and 460 administrative staff.
SWC facilities include 65 buildings, including 40 student housing facilities. In addition to the main campus, SWC has three satellite facilities and four overseas study and research sites operated in partnership with local higher education institutions.
40 student housing facilities holy fuck. PLUS three satellite facilities and four overseas study and research sites?
Centralized administrative areas include: student affairs, budgeting and finance, legal affairs, human resources, payroll, alumni affairs, office of development and advancement, the library and information, planning and assessment services, university public affairs and media relations, IT, grants and contracts, and distance learning center.
Centralized services for students include: dining services (two full-service and two satellite locations); student life and services, housing (15 residence halls) and residence life, clubs and activities, college activities, health services, computer support, the computer store, religious and spiritual, and public safety.
The major academic units include: the School of Business (with three departments), College of Liberal Arts (with 14 departments), School of Computer Science (3 departments), College of Communication (5 departments), College of Fine Arts (4 departments), College of Labor Studies (2 departments), College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (5 departments), College of Natural and Life Sciences (6 departments), and the College of Law.
Each school and college also provides unit-based advising and career placement services, budgeting, human resources, IT services, student services, communication and public relations, and online courses and services.
I can’t help but feel we’ve got a lot of duplication/fragmentation here, and also you can’t say that something is centralized if...it is not in fact centralized (looking at you, IT services, human resources etc.)

Credentials and Credibility
I’ve written about polarization and about empathy, rights and responsibilities in the last couple of blog posts. I have a long list of interrelated topics to cover before the November elections and I plan to keep plowing through them. But I’m well aware that my voice is a candle in the wind, to borrow the phrase used by T.H. White in the title of his tale about King Arthur’s dream of a more egalitarian and peaceful society. The number of readers of my blog thus far may barely run into double digits and that may never change. We are all drowning in information (and misinformation) unless we are either so socioeconomically disadvantaged as to be denied access or are actively disengaged from media. People in either category aren’t reading this.
With all the competition for the attention of readers and listeners, if someone wants to be heard above the din, he or she either has to have a forceful personality and a good platform, or actually have something important to say. I may not have either of those. Readers will judge for themselves. But it occurred to me that I ought to at least provide a little background about myself, which may or may not compel you to hear me. So here it is.
My story is not one of hard knocks and resentment - it’s a success story. There are a lot of ways to define success but I feel like I’ve grabbed a nice assortment of brass rings during my almost-seven decades on the planet. I’ve had a long and happy marriage to an incredible woman; I’ve traveled extensively (six continents and all fifty states) and lived for substantial periods in many states; I have three degrees from a major college; I attained a modestly high position in a large, global professional services firm and was financially well rewarded for my efforts; and I have many hobbies and interests that make it easy for me to stay fully occupied in retirement. Most importantly, I’m happy and at peace with myself and others. One could argue that these successes may have caused me to be out of touch with those who’ve enjoyed fewer of them, but I don’t think that’s entirely true, and I’ll try to suggest why.
My parents were the son and daughter of a sharecropper and a truck farmer/itinerant salesman, respectively, in rural Mississippi. They grew up during the Great Depression. They were married and gave life to my older brother when they were still in their teens. My dad dropped out of high school to sign up for the Army and served in the European theater in WWII. After the war he got a G.E.D. and served as a tractor mechanic for a while. Around the time I was born he was hired by a prominent agricultural implement manufacturing company, which led to him being transferred from Mississippi to Maryland to Ohio to Idaho to Oregon and to Iowa in order to earn promotions, and with family in tow. Later he also transferred to Texas, Missouri and Georgia, after I was left behind to attend college in Iowa. In those days it was possible to rise pretty high in the ranks of a business like my dad’s, without a glittery collegiate resume, if you worked hard and were willing to uproot yourself and your family whenever it was called for. So my dad eventually did rise fairly high in the ranks, and in the meantime my mom scrambled her way to a B.A., then taught high school English for a short time.
All’s well that ends well, as Shakespeare once said. My parents came a long way from the dusty fields where they picked cotton for 50 cents a day. My own road to success was much easier than theirs. During most of my childhood our family was financially situated about in the dead center of what was then considered middle class. My parents were not rich, although they accumulated modest wealth later in life, and they were always frugal, so I grew up with very few toys and a mostly empty closet. My parents were not the type to devote much time attending to my personal pursuits, other than to quietly demand that I get good grades in school. So I wouldn’t say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I understand that’s a relative thing. I certainly wasn't lavished with material things as a child, but I never went hungry or worried about having a roof over my head.
Aside from a base level of financial and emotional support and protection, the best thing my parents gave me was a solid education in a robust public school system. This was a pre Betty Devos era. Fortunately I had just enough innate ambition (or willingness to succumb to my parents’ expectations) and intelligence to perform in the upper tier, academically. I could have done better but I often didn’t “apply myself,” as they say. In retrospect I realize I had ADHD but few people understood or cared about that back then.
My college record was spotty at first, but ultimately pretty good. I had almost no grasp of what I wanted to do with my life. As a result, I had an abnormally extended adolescence, to roughly age 27. Maybe I was a trendsetter; I see a lot more of that happening with young people today. In any case I considered, at various times and among other things, becoming a Baptist minister (I was licensed and briefly attended seminary), an English professor (I have an M.A. in English and instructed freshman writing courses for three years), a novelist and poet (insufficient talent and discipline derailed that plan), and a hotel manager (nah). A happy accident of my wandering and indecision was that I acquired a lot of knowledge that later paid off in surprising ways I’ll come back to later. I was financially very poor the entire time, which gave me considerable perspective on what it means to be concerned about affording basics such as food and transportation.
I vividly remember the catalysts for my decision to enter the social mainstream. One was the fallout from a poker game I got into with some friends. One of my “friends” was a notoriously unethical character who, one late evening when I was especially unlucky and perhaps too full of beer, lured me into some bad bets that resulted in a $700 debt to him. At that time, when I was working several crummy part-time jobs to afford food and my $50 share of the rent on a slum-quality house we shared with two other guys, $700 dollars seemed like a million dollars. I didn't realize and no one told me that on the very next evening the same group of friends gathered for another poker game as I was licking my wounds and trying to form a plan. I was not present to witness the scene in which the guy whom I was newly indebted to suffered an equally humiliating loss - a loss that was forgiven by the victor on the condition that the loser would also forgive my loss. My friends assumed that Bart (not his real name, or is it?) would inform me that I was off the hook. He did not.
For the first time in my life, I devised a budget in order to determine how I could repay Bart the debt that didn’t actually exist, because that’s the kind of guy I am. I believed, and I still do, that a person is morally and ethically responsible for meeting whatever commitments he or she enters into. So I scrambled for more hours working as a church janitor, a tutor and a library assistant; I ate Kraft macaroni and cheese almost every day (30 cents a box, if I recall); I stayed in my room as if I had contracted the then-undreamt-of coronavirus; and I turned over every penny that didn’t go for rent and minimal food to Bart in three monthly installments until I was finally clear. I was six feet tall but my weight fell to about 140 pounds. On the day I forked over the last $200, Bart skipped town, just as the news finally arrived that I wasn’t supposed to have owed that debt.
That sordid chapter concluded with me taking a job, out of sheer desperation, in a factory where I was paid a below-minimum wage to operate a machine which applied mailing labels to printed advertisements. It was mind-numbing. There were perhaps another 100 workers in that factory doing the same thing I was doing. The output of each worker was measured daily by the factory management. By the end of the first week I was the most productive mailing label attacher in the factory. To keep myself from going insane, I approached my task as if it were a game and challenged myself each shift to beat my previous day’s output, which I always did. During my brief lunch breaks I used to surreptitiously glance around at the other workers and I understood exactly what Thoreau meant when he opined that the mass of men live lives of quiet desperation. I don’t know if he was right about “the mass of men,” but he certainly could have been describing that crew at the factory.
In my second week at the factory I met another newly-hired college guy whose wife and he were trying to save enough money to move to Los Angeles so he could take a shot at professional acting - this was his second job. Chatting with him during lunch breaks, i was inspired by his desire to fulfill a dream and the difficult steps he was taking to do it. I listened to him, I looked around at the hollow-eyed, middle-aged folks who had worked for years operating labeling machines, and I squirmed as I considered what a sap I was for racking up a poker debt and falling victim to a con man. i abruptly abandoned the factory but I felt so discombobulated that I enlisted my good buddy John to drive out to Idaho with me so I could visit my brother and try to get my shit together. By the end of that brief sojourn out west, the best job offer I could manage was from Roto-Rooter . . . to work in the field, as it were. Wake up call!
If you’ve read this far you must be wondering how any of this supports the notion that I’m qualified to write about sociopolitical matters. It doesn’t, except to demonstrate that I have at least a small measure of “street cred.” But the best is yet to come. When I returned to Iowa I found a better job in a hotel. Initially I was a night auditor, which is a position that involves being a desk clerk part of the time and an accountant the rest of the time. Only a small step forward, financially, but it gave me a taste for something I had never previously thought about doing for even one minute. Accounting, I quickly learned, was something I had a natural aptitude for, and in some quirky way I found it interesting. Once again I viewed my duties as a sort of game, but this was a game that lit up my brain much more brightly than did operating a machine to perform an exceptionally repetitive task.
My whole life is a series of lucky breaks at critical junctures. In this instance the break was that I met a co-worker - a guy who shared the hotel night auditor position with me - who had previously worked for a large CPA firm. He had taken the part-time hotel job because he was trying to become a full-time stock trader and that’s what he was doing during the day. From him I learned what it is that CPAs in a big firm actually do. Let me assure you I’m not going to get into that subject, in case you were already feeling the dread. (Thank God for actuaries - the only people who make accountants seem slightly interesting.) Suffice it to say that I figured out how I could minimize the additional schooling I would need to become qualified to be a CPA and I decided to take a stab at it.
I kept the hotel job but started carrying a heavy load of college classes - accounting, math, economics, law, etc. It so happened that I met my future wife, who was just finishing her Interior Design degree at the same college, about the same time I took the first tentative steps down my new career path. That was even more fortuitous - I give her lots of credit for helping me stay the course. The two years in which I went to college in the day, worked at the hotel at night, and struggled to get our new romance off the ground, was “character-building,” to say the least. I can barely remember anything about that period, it was such a blur. To give you an idea of how much of a blur it was, the major highlight I remember was driving with my new spouse to Des Moines to dine at Spaghetti Works. $5 for beer-and-cheese spaghetti, all-you-can-eat salad bar and a glass of swill. Heaven!
When the two hellish years finally ended and I received my B.S. in Accounting, I had already lined up a job in Des Moines as an auditor with one of the Big 8 (at that time) accounting firms. Not long afterward, I passed the CPA exam and my wife landed a spot with a local design firm, and we were on our way.
Ok, at last I’m where I possibly should have started. In the ensuring three decades I continued to work as a CPA, becoming a partner along the way (meaning that I became one of the owners), and developing a specialization working with clients in the financial services industry - investment management companies and banking and finance companies, primarily. This is the good part, folks. My career soon took me from Iowa to New York City, where my background in English earned me the privilege of being a key designer and the principal author of new practice guidance for our international firm, which was just merging with another large international firm. That put me in the spotlight for a time and gave me a leg up for promotion. After the merger we relocated to Los Angeles, where I worked with some of the most prominent investment management companies in the world, and numerous banks, mortgage banks and other financial institutions. Finally we moved to southeast Pennsylvania and I split time engaged with clients there and in California, and with our national financial services practice in New York.
Late, late nights on Wall Street helping to prepare financial offerings with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line. Late, late nights at client offices in L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, New York and Philadelphia, managing teams of young accountants to deal with complex accounting problems under tremendous pressure. Board meetings, fee negotiations, staff meltdowns, discoveries of fraud and malfeasance, financial crises in which I was an inside observer. A 60-hour work week felt almost like a vacation compared to many weeks with even longer hours. It was enough to give me PTSD. I don’t want to overstate it - it wasn’t like actual life or death combat PTSD - but I still have nightmares ten years and more after the fact.
That’s a very quick summary of the 30+ years in which I obtained hard-won knowledge about global finance and economics - a period in which I also had a lot of experiences with politics, charitable organizations and other components of society I didn’t have time to get into today. I still spend a lot of time staying informed about subjects ranging from psychology and mythology to current events and hard science. There’s a ton I still don’t know. But as my all-time favorite singer Joni Mitchell famously said, I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now.

The Best Legal Tech Tools to Help Entrepreneurs to Manage Legal Processes
By: Amanda Ciccatelli
As we emerge from a global pandemic where working from home for many has become the new normal, smart entrepreneurs must leverage remote work and other technology to manage and scale their businesses.
Twenty years ago, the first dollar of startup revenue was likely not far from Founder Louis Lehot’s elite boutique law firm L2 Counsel in Silicon Valley. Since then, startups have globalized — with one co-founder at one end of the world, another at the other, R&D, sales and marketing all over. Technology businesses are inherently global, so they must operate in compliance with multiple jurisdictional statutes, rules, regulations, commercial contracts, licenses and more. Now more than ever, LegalTech tools will play a key role in running legal processes for your business.
Today, legal process points cause frustration for entrepreneurs everywhere — from harvesting and protecting IP rights, to storing and securing customer information, to negotiating and renewing contracts — the potential for human error is big. To alleviate this issue, LegalTech tools can enable safe, secure and private communication, document storage and management, e-signature and cloud-enabled contract management and AI tools.
We sat down with Louis Lehot who has represented hundreds of startups over the last 20 years, to discuss the best LegalTech tools to use for your business. Below is a list of the best LegalTech tools for collaboration, spend management, and contract review, according to Louis Lehot.
The Best LegalTech Tools for Collaboration:
Zoom has become the poster child for video-conferencing lately. With high quality images and audio, virtual backgrounds, audio calling, conference calls, screen sharing and scheduling, startups have flocked to this affordable technology.
“While it has had some security issues, and could be improved to allow for better recording and editing, it remains a piece of resistance for legal communications and collaboration,” he said.
Skype has been accelerating enterprise penetration since its acquisition by Microsoft, allowing for free web meetings, video conference and VOIP software. There is also an instant messaging feature, audio and video call features, mobile phones and landline calling, paid international calling, and conference call capabilities for up to 25 people.
Louis Lehot added, “During video sessions, users can share their screen, and other features include background blurring, voice and text translation, location sharing, and conversation searching.”
Microsoft Teams combines video conferencing with team collaboration tools, allowing MS Office users to conduct conference calls and share files, as well as join or initiate a group chat. He said, “The shared chat space and ability to break out into smaller groups can enable collaboration tools to share documents.”
However, deletion of messages is not enabled, there is no group calendar option, and the permission settings are not user-friendly.
RingCentral is a VOIP solution available in the cloud, featuring video and audio conferencing, desktop phone rentals, collaboration tools and integrations with other apps. According to Louis Lehot, it is known for quality voice and video communication, consistent interface across platforms, good performance, messaging and texting. But, generating reports takes about 24 hours and often contain inaccuracies, group calls are challenging, and there is no forwarding to an external number or group texting features as of this writing.
Google Hangouts provides a communication and extension of the Google collaboration platform to include messaging, voice, VoIP, and video call capabilities. Louis Lehot explained that users can “Hangout” to start a chat or video call, phone call using Wi-Fi or data, send text messages with a Google Voice or Google Fi phone number. “They sync across devices, and you can start a call on one device and switch to another. It’s free, can run on almost any platform, easy to set up, with a clean and intuitive interface,” added.
Cisco WebEx is a cloud-based phone system optimized for midsized and large enterprises. It presents essential business calling capabilities and removes complexity of managing a phone system infrastructure on premises. According to Louis Lehot, this tool has an easy interface, fast notifications to email, clear connections, easy to add users, mobile use, easy to switch between devices and collaboration with WebEx document sharing teaming. The only problem is that it can take 5–10 minutes to download the local client, so Louis Lehot advises that you make sure your other users have previously installed it.
The Best LegalTech Tools for Spend & Matter Management:
Clio, Practice Panther, Thomson Reuters (Serengeti), and other programs attempt to solve the problem of managing budgets, billing and time management. Clio and PracticePanther are web-based legal practice management software packages, principally for small law firms and solo practitioners, with case management, accounting and document storage functions.
SimpleLegal focuses on modern legal operations management that combines matter management, e-billing and spend management, vendor management, knowledge management and provides business insights through robust reporting and analytics.
“It is best for tracking expenses, creating, analyzing matters, reporting and analytics,” he said. “However, some wish that it had the functionalities of QuickBooks and out-of-the-box API integrations.”
Acuity Elm is a cloud-based enterprise legal spend management solution, providing business solutions to in-house counsel and legal ops teams of all sizes. Louis Lehot likes that it helps teams reduce spend, increase productivity and improve outcomes and transparency.
“It serves as a communication for clients and counsel to share and organize documents, as well as manage time entry, and it keep track of cases,” he explained. “But it is criticized for provoking tension between companies and counsel and being overly complex.”
The Best LegalTech Tools for Contract Review:
Contract Companion provides a proofreading tools that leverages AI to ensure documents meet quality standards, automatically identifies and reviews errors in real-time and quickly bacs back to higher-value activities.
He added, “It consistently demonstrates capabilities and work integrity and has time management tools designed to reduce time pressure and complete a precise review that is difficult to achieve manually.”
Kira Networks is a machine learning software tools that identifies extracts and analyzes content in contracts and documents with accuracy and efficiency. From increasing efficiency of the contract review process to the flexibility of building and integrating solutions together, according to Louis Lehot, Kira is designed to allow users to easily extract insights from contracts and documents.
Contract Express automates your legal document creation process and ensures your documents are complete and accurate. In Louis Lehot’s experience, this tool provides an intuitive markup, compliance and relevancy tool and automates the drafting process for complex legal documents without requiring IT programmers.
ParleyPro is a new contract review and management platform designed to close better contracts faster with smart collaboration. He explained, “It is praised for its ability to enable the legal team’s ability to scale its effectiveness, by facilitating effective creation, negotiation, execution and management of all contracts across vendors and partners in one place.”
One thing to keep in mind is that while its flexibility is praised, there is still complexity that requires advance planning.
Concord is a contract lifecycle management platform built to work across an organization’s many functions. It has a simple design, with an end-to-end solution to make it easier to create, collaborate, negotiate, e-sign and manage agreements.
Louis Lehot shared some advice for entrepreneurs who are in search of a LegalTech tools right now. He said, “LegalTech tools are necessary to automate processes, communicate, collaborate, manage projects, improve accuracy and reduce spending. There is no one legal tech tool that solves everything.”

I’m Lost In Your Fire
A Vampire Journalist Harry Fic
*Read Chapter One
Chapter Two
Harry can’t help but let out a groan as he lets his body sink deep into the warm water filling his pearly white porcelain bathtub. It feels like a relief as the water sinks into his skin and envelops his sore muscles in warmth. He lets the soothing scent of lavender fill his nose and allows calm to overtake him as his bath bomb continues to fizz in the quiet of his bathroom.
Today hasn’t been the worst day he’s ever had, not by a longshot, but it’s been long and stressful. Putting up with pricks like Jimmy at the office all day and not being able to say anything can make the tension in his body skyrocket with holding back any reaction. And believe it or not, working on fluff pieces he could writing his sleep can actually be more draining than the hardest hitting journalism beats. There’s only so many times he can type out the words London Poodle Parade before wanting to break his computer himself.
But now that that piece is over, finally, he’s got to get down to the real business. Mr. Turner’s finally given him a story he can actually sink his teeth into… so to speak. It may not be the hard hitting stuff they write down in the political new section, but a profile feature actually gives him something to work with, real substance that’ll occupy his mind and give him something to research. Which is why he’s decided to take a nice long soothing bath to help ease him into the research process. Admittedly, it’s been awhile since he’s had to do anything this extensive.
So, Zoe Price, who are you?
He clicks his laptop on from where it was sitting asleep on his wooden bathtub tray along with his wine glass that was decidedly not red with wine.
He decides to start his search by typing her name into Google- the best way is oftentimes the simplest. He’s almost surprised when he sees the rest of her name pop up in his suggestions when he’s only typed “Zoe P” so far, but then he remembers that if this woman was truly a nobody he probably wouldn’t be writing a profile on her. He clicks down to her name and hits enter and the first thing his eyes are drawn to on the screen is the photo in the corner of a woman with warm eyes and dark hair. She’s not bad to look at, but he doesn’t let himself linger before he moves on to the rest of the webpage.
The first link up is for something called London Bites. Was she some kind of food blogger or something? Sharing recommendations for London’s hidden dining hotspots for tourists and residents alike can all enjoy the best of what the city had to offer? Hm, didn’t seem likely that he’d be assigned a profile on someone that… mundane.
He clicks the link, mentally reminding himself to go back and look through the twitter that had been listed just below on the search page.
At the top of the page is a a black and white photo of London with London Bites across the top in red cursive. Not exactly the vibe he would expect from a food blogger.
As he scrolls down, he sees yet another photo of who he presumes to be Zoe herself if the caption is to be believed.
Zoe Price.
24.
London, UK.
Political Science, B.A.
But in this one her hair is shorter, lighter, and any warmth Harry fleetingly thought she’d had minutes ago is nowhere to be found. She looks more severe in this photo, it’s to be expected when it’s clearly been professionally posed and shot for business purposes, but Harry can’t say he likes the way she looks in it all the same. Not that it matters what he thinks. He’s writing a piece on her and her work, not on… her looks or how friendly she may or may not be.
To the right of her photo is a little blurb that reads:
It can be hard keeping up with all the goings-on in London politics and current events. There’s politicians galore, people with opinions everywhere you turn, and vampires just around the corner. Join Zoe Price every Monday as she interviews guests, debates hot button issues, and provides you with your weekly dose of social and political insight. Whether you want to be a more educated citizen, you want to impress your friends with being up-to-date in all things politically relevant today, or you just like the sound of Zoe’s voice, this is the podcast for you.
Subscribe and listen to London Bites now on Apple Music, Spotify, or wherever else you like to stream podcasts.
Below that are little Twitter and Instagram icons which presumably link to Zoe’s own social media. A cursory scroll down also reveals the latest episode of London Bites available to listen, but Harry’s still thinking about her podcast description. “Vampires just around the corner.” He’s already getting the feeling that this piece isn’t going to be all that great of an opportunity as Mr. Turner suggested it would be. The churning in the pit of his stomach only worsens when his eyes focus on the title of her latest podcast episode just under the streaming widget.
Vampires: Friends or Foes
Vampires. Society loves to hate them. Are they really the filthy bloodsucking monsters politicians would have us believe? Probably. But join me as I share my own experiences with vamps and the stories my subscribers have shared. Who knows, maybe the results will surprise you.
It seems pretty obvious now, Zoe Price is no mundane food blogger. Instead she’s a… an antisanguinist? A sympathizer? Well, no definitely not a sympathizer if she says that vampires “probably” are all those vile things people say.
At this point Harry’s not altogether sure what to make of Zoe Price. And he’s not so sure he’s looking forward to figuring it out. Figuring her out.
He swallows down a big gulp of lukewarm blood before he clicks play and closes his eyes, allowing his body to sink deeper into the soothing lavender and chamomile oils that have mixed in with the warm water.
Hi everyone, welcome to London Bites! I’m your host Zoe and today we’ll be getting into what seems to be everyone’s favorite topic to discuss: Vampires. If you’ve been a subscriber for awhile you might remember our episode from a few weeks ago, The Londoners guide to dealing with vamps featuring guest Maggie Sinclair. If you’re new to the podcast don’t fret, you can go back and listen to self defense instructor Maggie Sinclair share all her tips and tricks for handling a vampire situation. I’ve received a lot of messages on social media since then letting me know how helpful you listeners found that episode, so as usual feel free to tell me what you want to hear and maybe it’ll make it into the podcast!
Now onto today’s business. I hope you have a snack and something to drink because today’s episode is gonna be a long one. There’s no guests today. Insert “boooo” sounds here (but not really because who has the budget and skill for that? Not me that’s for sure.
Harry’s ears prick up just the slightest bit at the laugh she lets out at her own self-deprecating joke, but otherwise he remains still and faintly tense as he waits to here what else Zoe has to say.
Today’s show is going to run a little differently than usual, but hey it’s always fun to spice things up once in awhile, right? Instead of a guest joining me, I decided to pose a question to my wonderful followers on Twitter and Instagram. What have your experiences with vampires been like? And bleeding heck you lot had many a story to share!
So without further ado I’ll get right into it. And if you’re asking yourself right now “when is Zoe going to share her own story?” well tha’s a good question and I’ll be sharing at the end so I guess you’ve got to listen to the whole episode to get to it. No one likes a podcast fast forwarder! At least I don’t.
Ah, our first story is from Amy right here in London and she said that she once saw a vampire help an old lady cross the street. Hm, well who’s t’say it even was a vampire. It’s London! The weather is absolute shite if the number of jackets I’ve got in my wardrobe is any indication. Who’s t’say it really was a vampire and not just a human whose mark was covered by his coat. I’ll just put that one down as a… maybe vampire experience.
Harry doesn’t know whether he should scoff at how very human it was for Zoe to bring up those damn marks or seethe at the notion that a vampire helping someone was impossible. Nonetheless, he finds himself rubbing the pad of his thumb over his own cross marking on the skin of his left hand, just as dark and inky black as the day he got it.
He must get lost in his thoughts, thinking back to how it felt to get the mark branded on— the excruciating, his tears as he looked over the doctor’s shoulder to find his mother’s eyes, her own solemn expression— because once Zoe’s voice floats back through his ears, she’s already in the middle of sharing someone else’s story.
We could just let the filthy leech stay in our town, Zoe, and living right by a school no less? Not on our watch. Me and a few of the guys got together and drove the bloodsucker right out. The best part was he didn’t even try to fight back! Can you believe how humiliating? If he wasn’t a disgusting monster I might’ve felt bad for the kid really, but ‘ey he got what he deserved.
Well listeners, what a harrowing account by Joshua in Liverpool. It just goes to show the lengths some vamps will go to concealing their identity and how we as citizens must be vigilant. It was great to hear that none of those children got hurt before Joshua and his friends were able to get rid of that vamp.
Harry’s breathing picks up at that, fast and loud in the quiet of his bathroom. His hands find the edges of his tub and his fingers curl over the porcelain in vice grips. That was- humans call them the monsters but when they do things like that… humans are the deluded monsters in this world.
And this, this Zoe Price. She’s just, well, it doesn’t seem like there’s a question about her being an anti now. The way she talks about vampires… pretending like she’s willing to give everyone a fair shake. Ha! Fat chance at that.
It’s then that he hears her say “it’s truly a godsend that those god forsaken leeches can’t procreate or else we’d truly have a mess on our hands trying to get not just adult vamps but their spawn too.”
He can’t slam his laptop closed fast enough. He wants to scream at all the anger bubbling up from inside his chest. These people, they don’t know anything! Harry’s disgusted at how Zoe’s voice curled around those words, how she said them as if she’s said them before. Most of all, Harry’s angry at the fact that hearing that sentiment isn’t new, far from it really. The fact this his whole life, he’s had to listen to human talk about how vamps shouldn’t have kids, how it was a good thing they couldn’t. Well, he only really started hearing the latter when he grew older, when people forgot, when he moved away from Manchester and nobody knew him or where he came from.
All the same, it makes him sick to hear and he doesn’t know what he’s going to do tomorrow when he’s supposed to call this woman and set up a meeting. He doesn’t know how he’ll stand being on the phone with her let alone seeing her in person.
To stop his thoughts from swirling around in his head, he lets his body sink down until he’s submerged in his bathwater. He lets the silence overtake him and feels his tense muscles relax and his limbs grow heavy. He thinks of his mother and how mad she used to get at him when he did this as a child. He thinks about how warm her body felt as she wrapped him up in a towel and held him close to her chest and whispered how much she loved him in his ear. He thinks about how much he misses her. How now there’s no one here to pull him out of the bath and dry him off. So he stays like that, in the dark and the silence until sleep overtakes him.

Can you tell us about your beginnings? How and when did you understand you wanted to be a documentary filmmaker and visual storytelling?
After obtaining a B.A. in Economics, I started my career as a financial news writer but soon specialized in current affairs in a heartfelt need for human stories. I experimented with different media formats such as cable news and newspaper. Although cable news was seen as an instant source of information back then, I wasn’t satisfied with the way of its storytelling mainly focuses on the ongoing development of an event without examining much of its past. Daily newspapers were constrained by space and deadlines and couldn’t print all the context we need. I was looking for a medium that would solve my puzzle. It wasn’t until 2009 when I joined The Guardian Beijing bureau that I realized documentary videos could be the answer. The timing corresponded to the democratization of filmmaking as Canon began to offer full-HD video-capturing capacity with its 5D Mark II. The print media was going through a digital revolution and embracing ideas to boost their online presence. I teamed up with Guardian’s Beijing correspondent Jonathan Watts to report on China’s environmental challenges. I pitched stories ideas and helped shoot and edited videos. Together we produced several website video features that were followed by other media outlets. I learned so much from Jonathan and the rest of the Guardian team, and I began to incubate my independent documentary projects. I was following the blog of photojournalist Dan Chung who pioneered the DSLR use in filmmaking. There was also this self-training website No Film School, founded by Ryan Koo, offering collective knowledge to filmmakers of every budget.
I see documentary videos as a very comprehensive storytelling tool and a revealing portrait of history. It employs texts, moving images, and audio elements to incorporate the team’s research into a compelling narrative. All these elements activate our imagination simultaneously in the shortest time possible and help us grasp the depth and nuances of complex political and social issues. Having said that, in recent years, I’m shifting my focus back to writing, the most fundamental element of all forms of journalism. I would like to do more visual writing in the future.
Shirley Ying Han has mainly been focusing on public policy research and analysis and nonfiction writing
Who have been your biggest mentors and what is the best advice they have ever given you?
My first and most important mentor was really my mom, a self-made Chinese woman. She was brought up by her paternal grandmother in a suburb of Tianjin because her mother passed away after giving birth to her, and her father worked far away from home. She was great at school but the decade-long Cultural Revolution began in 1966. As part of an anti-bourgeois movement, urban youth would be sent to work on remote rural farms if they wished to continue high school. All Chinese universities had their doors closed without knowing when they would accept applicants again. So after completing her secondary education, my mom was assigned by the government to wait tables in a publicly owned restaurant seven days a week. Feeling unfulfilled, she took evening courses and exams and eventually became a certified accountant. She encourages everyone not to believe in fate, but to work hard and strive for a better self. She never hesitates to help my dad’s siblings financially, even with her very moderate salaries. I’ve always admired her strength, energy, and perseverance despite all those unfavorable social and personal circumstances. Throughout my career, my colleagues and project collaborators have all been mentors to me in their way. My first boss, CNN’s Jaime Florcruz, trained me on how to be a good reporter. Guardian’s Jonathan Watts opened my eyes to environmental journalism and DSLR filmmaking. David Rathbun of Pasteur Institute told me to dream big and introduced me to the importance of global public health cooperation. Veteran journalist and book author Judith Matloff mentored me on nonfiction narrative writing, advising me to focus on the actions and note down everything that I see and hear. Most importantly, Professor Nicholas Lemann at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, also a staff writer at The New Yorker, taught me a Tolstoy way of thinking when reporting on complex stories. An event is often controlled by the actions of the multitudes with no single causation. Don’t ever mistake analytical reasoning with narrative logic.
What challenges did you face in becoming a multimedia journalist?
Multimedia journalists work across many dimensions. Technological change means constant learning. I had to pick up a lot of new skills. For instance, through independent documentary projects and freelance, I was able to develop my own story ideas and work on subjects that require in-depth research. I learned from budgeting to distribution, deep research to graphics design, camera controls to creative editing, long-form scriptwriting to voice-over, etc. Data visualization wasn’t my strongest assets three years ago, so I took an online Python course on DataCamp and had more lessons during my graduate study at Columbia University last year. I prefer a minimalist approach, as storytelling tools should be instrumental. I don’t like to wallpaper everything. This brings another difficult task of choosing the best combination of elements — sound, text, video, photos, and graphics — to assist the particular narrative. On top of that, social media users have shorter attention spans. How to quickly unpack a nuanced story in a few minutes, sometimes seconds, poses another challenge.
Changes can come by spreading knowledge and stories. What is your journalism philosophy and mission?
For many years, I had been creating outreach videos for nonprofit organizations. Through these projects, I encountered many rights groups and courageous individuals, reconnecting myself with some of the least privileged members of our society. Some were forced to relocate, whereas others underwent substantial hardships. But beneath all the difficulties, they remained appreciative and hopeful. I really believe good local journalism is the cornerstone of our social cartography, and we need to have the whole community represented on the map. As a journalist, my mission is to inform the public with the necessary information to navigate society and self-govern. But in an age where more and more media are moving towards international news, local journalism is in crisis. When local journalism declines, so does government transparency. Words have the power to shape thoughts. I want to re-inject local journalism back to these outlets, by finding the universality of different human experiences and telling their stories in a way that balances local importance and global relevance. National and foreign policies also affect the lives of local communities. I’m also interested in examining complex geopolitical issues and help local viewers understand how global events and public policies change their lives.
What do you like most about your job? What are the most important goals in your career What gave you the strength to go on and achieve your goals?
I love the energy associated with my job, meeting different people all the time, and analytically examining their unique experiences. I also relish the process of research and discovery, where I learn new facts and perspectives every day. I’m not saying these traits are exclusive to journalism jobs, but merely pointing out my favorite part. There is a very nerdy side of me that’s leaning more towards history and policy research. My goal is to ultimately help myself and others comprehend public policies and what better alternatives are available. Good journalism facilitates positive change. I hope my work can contribute to that collective effort required to build an equal society. Curiosity and fulfillment also motivate me. Everyone only has a limited amount of time to live, so why not make the best out of it and do things that empower me and others?
Besides China, you have lived and worked in many countries around the world: South Korea, Iran, Hong Kong, France, and the USA. What are the main differences you noticed in opportunities and rights? Does traveling help you to more understand human beings?
Since my early twenties, I have believed the best way to understand international affairs was by engaging with people from different countries and regions. Those culturally diverse individuals have made my journey such a rich and insightful experience. In a way, strangers have shaped my life. Travel is the best antidote to ignorance. Every place offers its own opportunities and rights, depending on your circumstances. I tend to look at the separation of powers that guards against corruption and the cost of justice for individuals to defend their rights. Since the founding of South Korea, the country has transformed from an authoritarian state to a liberal democracy. What impressed me the most is people’s protest culture there. South Koreans turn to have this fundamental belief in their rights and see democracy as a combination of a political system and civic activism. Similarly, in other liberal democratic countries, the rule of law gives people a means to correct institutional failures through the legal process and civic engagement. The Chinese government lifted hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty, but its development model has also created dramatic and growing gaps between the poor and the privileged. Authorities attach great importance to muting domestic and international criticism. Defending one’s political and socio-economic rights remains at the mercy of politicians or well-connected individuals.
The Iranians have been going through their own quest for societal and individual freedoms. Its current political system a hybrid of a theocracy and democracy that imposes strict control over the opposition. In Tehran, I witnessed police brutality during a crackdown on student protests in 2008. On another occasion, my colleagues and I were detained as we attempted to report on general elections. Women, in particular, are discriminated against by law, and authorities perceive gender equality movements as a proliferation of western culture.
Your master’s project highlights the challenges in prosecuting transnational crimes and the economic empowerment of undocumented Chinese female workers in the U.S. How big is the situation? What has been achieved and what is still to be done to overcome this problem?
My story is about an undocumented low-skilled Chinese woman who left home for a prosperous life in New York but eventually became a precarious sex worker in a massage parlor. Inspired by Hirokazu Koreeda’s 2018 film Shoplifters, I took an empathetic approach to tell so-called “crimes” carried out by marginalized communities without a social safety net. I was on a mission to find out how China’s economic boom in the past four decades has failed to empower this lady and many other rural women like her. Through reporting, I realized how social conditions could inform personal decisions. A stigma often surrounds women working in the sex trade without acknowledging their individual circumstances, making these women even more marginalized.
She is a multimedia journalist covering general news, international affairs, and socio-economic issues for television broadcasting and online digital platforms. Shirley Ying Han has produced special video features and documentaries for major news networks
There is so much to say about this subject. Still, in short, the uneven development in China favoring some provinces and cities have led to vast social inequalities between populations, rural and urban in particular. Environmental degradation and governance that lacks gender-responsive policies and laws have further tapered the social mobility of low-skilled female workers. The source country needs to work on improving their economic prospects to fight against human trafficking and sex slavery. In the destination countries, specific structural forces within society and language barriers limit these women from expanding their professional opportunities. They often resort to loans to pay for fraudulent visa assistance and travel arrangements. The pressure to repay their debts drives them to seek a fast way to earn money. Much needs to be done, such as policing practice and professional development. But in some U.S. cities, authorities have already made efforts to redefine the perpetrators and victims of the commercial sex trade. For example, every Friday at the Queens’ Human Trafficking Intervention Court in New York, judges hear women charged with prostitution or loitering. Multi-linguistic teams of attorneys, interpreters, and social workers and counselors screen potential victims of trafficking and provide them with additional assistance. Defendants could either fight their case in a conventional court or make a deal here by enrolling in five-session counseling that usually lasts for a month. Upon completing the program without further offense, their charges will be dismissed, and record sealed.
You made a documentary film“When The Last Tree Dies” on the water crisis in the North China Plain that received the Award of Excellence at the 2014 Canada International Film Festival. Problems like this are spreading all around the world. Do you think people are getting aware of the current environmental situation and water pollution?
Global awareness is undoubtedly there, but the challenge lies in taking concrete actions. A lot of this has to do with economic incentives. Our electoral cycles are at odds with our long-term environmental and economic interests. Short mandates motivate policymakers to focus on short-term priorities. This is where civil society can engage their roles, pressuring politicians for new market incentives to reduce pollution. The recent rise of youth activism has also shaped the debate around climate change. Sixteen teens from across the globe, including Greta Thunberg, filed a legal human rights complaint accusing five of the world’s major economies of inaction on the climate crisis. Their arguments serve an excellent incentive for adults to be more conscious of our carbon footprint. The question now is how to harness that incentive and turn it into economic policies.
On one side digital technology helps to improve participation and to get more information. On the other side World, wide web citizens are facing media manipulation and disinformation. How Social Media has changed Journalism?
Social media certainly has offered new storytelling tools to make news more accurate and interactive. The roles of journalists have expanded in a multimedia-and-technological direction. Now journalists often share their own experiences and opinions on social media to which viewers can respond. This direct dialogue can provide more transparency to the reporting process, which is vital for good journalism practices. On social media, we can quickly reach out to broader sources and take their stories further. But there is also less time to vet information as the public has a shorter attention span, and media outlets are competing for breaking news. Amid concerns about the spread of misinformation and disinformation, media organizations have revived their emphasis on fact-checking in recent years. Many have reinforced their fact-checking teams. There are also standalone organizations specialized in such tasks. These efforts are helping journalists redefine their workflow to meet society’s new requirement for credibility and transparency.
