not to still be on my 披哥4 vers. of 《借过一下》 bullshit but I am still rotating the mid-term showing version of this song in my head. there's a raw emotion to the movement and choreography and performance that I find to be more visible before they added the special effects, and you can hear some of the three part harmonies that get blended in the stage version. that and everyone in the room is storytelling the heck out of this song and I go just a bit feral for that

Favorite performance from the weekend of Oct. 12-13

🔥"Can't Beg for Love" by Azora Chin, Miyavi, Rhydian Vaughan, Hito, and Caelan Moriarty

The music, which blends traditional and modern rhythms, is very catchy, and the performance is super fun to watch! Azora's high notes toward the end are fantastic! Also, splashing water!💦

Very cool ethnic outfits. They said the performance was done in the style of Southern Fujian and was based on a dance that's performed as part of temple fairs to pray for good fortune.

There are two Generals who encourage people to do good deeds, the blue-faced general Sun and the red-faced general Zeng, played by Miyavi and Caelan, respectively. General Sun was responsible for keeping track of people's evil acts, while General Zeng was responsible for recording people's good deeds.

Face-painting took one hour for each.

One of the challenges of this performance was that it's sung in Minnan dialect, which only two of the members speak (Azora and Rhydian). Moreover, Caelan seems to have trouble with Mandarin, and Miyavi only knows some words. Therefore, Rhydian had to teach the team how to pronounce each word in the song.

Rhydian also explained the difference between the northern and the southern pipa, which is that while the northern pipa is held vertically, the southern pipa is held more horizontally, similar to a guitar.

the guy you mentioned at the beginning of the video is 杨和苏 (yes his parents were great at names) who's from the same label as 法老 /小精灵, he and 早安 had the dark horse run of victory on the previous year's 新说唱 that incidentally catapulted 早安 to a lot of the mainstream success he's seeing nowadays. I kind of got the sense that he wanted to do the same to his labelmates/most specifically his partner 贰万 but alas it was not to be so, and you could just tell he was sad about it all of the 2023 新说唱 season. to me this song is a response to that.

okay all things considered, zao an's reaction to 《健将》 is very measured, I say as someone who emitted a strangled, high-pitched noise out loud the first time I experienced 《健将plus》. "我不知道刚刚三分钟是真实存在于这个世界上的东西" is such a mood though hhh

I hadn't thought about looking up reaction videos but actually the reaction video you sent me has fascinating commentary on interpretations of 《健将plus》 and the competition itself, which I found neat since I knew none of this drama going in. your explanation also helps recontextualize a lot of the commentary inherent to the lyrics. without knowing the context, 《健将plus》 is some wild absurdist rap, but knowing the context it's actually a scathing criticism of the whole show/structure.

also the reactions were incredible. truly this song puts you through the entire range of human emotion
