Memories of Autumn in the Sierra Nevada Mountains by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along Tioga Road with a view looking to the southwest to a nearby forest with trees starting to show Autumn colors. Composing the image was then a matter of finding a grouping of trees that worked a pattern across the mountainside. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Towering Canyon Walls of the Gunnison (Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the southwest while walking along the North Vista Trail on the North Rim of the national park. From this clearing in the trees, I was able to capture an image of those towering cliff walls that were so amazing to behold!

Milky Way Stretching Across the Night Skies at Petrified Forest National Park

Milky Way Stretching Across the Night Skies at Petrified Forest National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A last image captured while standing one evening outside the main north entrance to Petrified Forest National Park. This was with a Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G that I bought just for these starry night conditions and capturing images. I did some initial processing of the RAW/NEF image in ViewNXi Edited, export that to Viveza 2 and finished any image edits in DxO PhotoLab 4.

Across the Arizona High Desert Along the Historic Route 66 (Petrified Forest National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the southwest across the desert grasslands present at this monument to the Historic Route 66. I was on top of some concrete blocks present and capture this image. My thinking was to use this high point and capture a more sweeping view looking to the distant horizon with the utility poles as a leading line of sorts. The blue skies above would act as that color complement to the more earth-tones present in the lower portion of the image. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Bluffs, Hillsides of Trees and Folds Across the Earth (Theodore Roosevelt National Park)
flickr
Bluffs, Hillsides of Trees and Folds Across the Earth (Theodore Roosevelt National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: One of those wide angle views one just has to sit to soak in the vastness of wonder. From this vantage point at Skyline Vista, I decided to use the height of my location and then angle my SLR camera slightly downward to better bring out a sense of depth to this setting in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The view is to the southwest which is about as far south as I could look without including the interstate that followed along the boundary.

The Milky Way Looked So Beautiful While Taking in an Evening at Petrified Forest National Park
flickr
The Milky Way Looked So Beautiful While Taking in an Evening at Petrified Forest National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: An image captured while standing outside the main north entrance to Petrified Forest National Park. I used a Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G with a portrait orientation to follow a spiral arm present that early evening in the night skies. Having spent the night prior learning how to work with this on a Nikon D850 SLR camera, I was better able to make adjustments to shutter speed, ISO and get a proper focus on the stars present. I found that a shorter shutter speed than the 500 Rule made for less of a star trail blur while making up for that with a higher ISO. The D850 SLR camera seem to handle this adjustment quite well! As for post processing, I decided to make initial adjustments with ViewNXi and export a TIFF image that I could then continue adjustments with Viveza 2 before importing it into DxO PhotoLab 4.

While Out Hiking, One Can Pretty Much See Spectacular Views! (Capitol Reef National Park)

While Out Hiking, One Can Pretty Much See Spectacular Views! (Capitol Reef National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: With some work in Capture NX2 with color control points and Low Key CEP filter (with the opacity slightly brought down), I was able to bring out a much more colorful set of hues across this impressive landscape in the Grand Wash. Cassidy Arch is pretty much in the center of the image and the destination for this hike in Capitol Reef National Park.

A Hint of the Cassidy Arch Across a Rugged Landscape (Black & White, Capitol Reef National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A similar image to one I kept in color, but here I converted to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

Nature Calls To Come With It And Explore (Indiana Dunes National Park)
flickr
Nature Calls To Come With It And Explore (Indiana Dunes National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the southwest while walking a hiking trail through the tall grasses along the West Beach Trail. In composing this image, I went back-and-forth in my mind as to angling my Nikon SLR camera. Here I decided to angle it slightly upward and focus more on some nearby trees. A little bit of the tall grasses would be included, along with the waters of Long Lake and a distant shoreline with the forest and trees there. While the overcast skies were in my mind kind of a negative space, here they kind of helped to balance the image and national park setting. Kind of a color contrast, if you will. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.
