For the 5 sentence fic: "It could be worse."
cw: bruises, blood, inhuman whumpee, implied violence
masterlist.
Chiar stumbled through the entrance, barely catching himself on the door frame. Exhaustion clung to his clothes, hanging like weights off his shoulders. Through the open door, sunlight pooled lazily across the floor.
There was nothing lazy in Azide’s movements as they jerked up from their seat, their book falling to the floor with a thud.
Chiar flinched at the sound. He let go of the door frame to wave at Azide, swaying on his feet. “I’m fine. You can…” Chiar trailed off, squeezing his eyes shut to concentrate on what he was trying to say. “You can sit back down.”
“Chiar!”
Chiar crossed the floor, slumping into the chair next to Azide. He leaned forward, covering his face with his hands.
“Are you hurt?” Azide crouched down beside Chiar. The panic and fear in their voice was brighter than the sunlight. “Where are you hurt?”
Chiar lifted his hands away from his face.
Azide hissed, breath catching in their throat. They reached up with shaking hands to touch Chiar’s face, but he jerked away.
The right side of Chiar’s face was bruised almost beyond recognition, one eye swollen shut. His lip was split, blood tracing a scarlet-thin line down his chin.
“Don’t touch me,” snapped Chiar, covering his face once again. “I might hurt you.” I’m cryptid. You know this. The warning was tacked on like a forgotten note. Electric-blue sparks were visible beneath Chiar’s skin, the color rising and falling in time with his ragged breathing.
A cry caught in Azide’s throat. “I do not care.” They pulled Chiar into a tight embrace. They ignored the burning sensation from wherever their bare arms touched Chiar’s skin.
Chiar froze at Azide’s touch. His voice cracked as he whispered, “I’ve…I’ve had worse. I’ll survive, truly.”
Azide took Chiar’s shaking hands into their own. “You should not have had worse. You should not be hurt at all!” they said fiercely.
Chiar looked away. “It could be worse.” He hesitated, then laughed sharply. “It could be much worse. This,” he pulled a hand out of Azide’s grip to gesture to his face, “This was simply another cryptid recognizing me.”
“A cryptid attacked you?”
Chiar sank further into the chair, the blue light in his eyes darkening. “It’s a customary greeting for a traitor.”
He laughed again at Azide’s distress, but the sound was hollow. It echoed dully in the small room before the silence swallowed the laugh whole.

Oxidation numbers calculated by the rules on p. 491 can have fractional values (for example, the nitrogen atoms in the ionic compound sodium azide, NaN3 (see figure 12.2), have an oxidation number of -⅓).

HI FELLOW CHEMISTRY NERD HERE PLEASE RAMBLE ABOUT AZIDES I LOVE AZIDES
Ok! So I haven’t actually done much with asides since organic chemistry two years ago, BUT while I was refreshing my memory on their properties I found the loveliest of papers…
and I think that sums up azide chemistry very nicely.
Fav paragraph has to go to:
In the first case, the combination of sodium azide and acid affords hydrazoic acid. Hydrazoic acid is both acutely toxic (mouse LD50 = 22 mg/kg) (3) and a powerful explosive; in its neat form, hydrazoic acid is more explosive than TNT and orders of magnitude less stable. (4) The first scientists to isolate hydrazoic acid (Curtius and Radenhausen, in 1891) (5) found that “the blast of 50 mg was sufficient to disintegrate the apparatus to dust” and when a subsequent 700 mg batch “exploded spontaneously”, it seriously injured the coauthor (Radenhausen) and the shock wave from the explosion shattered every glass vessel nearby. There is no safe quantity when dealing with neat hydrazoic acid.
Even if this is diluted to hell, evaporation of hydrazoic acid followed by condensation will make it explosive all over. It does not require oxygen or a spark to explode.
So anyway, azides are fun :)

Azides are highly energetic compounds with a wide range of uses. For instance, sodium azide is employed as a biocide, preservative, mutagen, and test reagent. Download azides buyers suppliers details here.

I learned about FOOF from a sci-fi story where the military used it to set things on fire in space
Attention Science Enthusiasts and Chem Majors!
Reference for the non-chemists:
Alkaline Metals: putting water on these will set them on fire. Combines explosively with Halogens to produce salts, which are largely impervious to heat.
Halogens: corrosive as fuck. Includes Fluorine and Chlorine. Combines explosively with Alkali Metals to produce salts, which are largely impervious to heat.
Mercury: thanks to Cooper Pairs and Quantum Weirdness, is liquid at room temperature despite being heavy as Lead. Turns Aluminum to mush. Will drive you mad.
Dimethyl Cadmium: 2 methyl’s on a Cadmium! A Metal, directly on Carbon Functional Groups! Carcinogenic, Teratogenic, Neurotoxic, Lipophilic, with both acute and chronic effects, this shit will wreck your cellular machinery like an industrial mining apparatus turned on a neighborhood brownstone.
Azoazide Azide: hello yes I would like to order 14 Nitrogen atoms, but, can they all be exclusively single bonded in a second-order Azide? Whaddya mean it’s the least stable molecule ever fabricated? What do you mean it self-immolates in isolated conditions?
Sand: it's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
[REDACTED]: goo

🤫 for Chiar!

Thanks for the ask! (from this ask game)
🤫-revealed trauma
masterlist.
***
Azide lit candles.
The flames danced in Chiar’s eyes, reflected off of Azide’s glasses and turned distorted and multi-coloured.
Chiar flinched back, dragging his chair with him. When he stood, the world spun with him, his insides twisted together in ways they shouldn’t be. He didn’t even hear the dull thud of the chair hitting the floor. He didn’t hear Azide’s cry.
Again he could see the burning torch and again he could hear hoarse screaming.
Laughing flames.
Instinctively, he cradled his hand close to his chest. At least he could still feel his fingers. Some parts of them. Some of the nerves had been damaged irreversibly and he could no longer feel his ring or little finger on his right hand.
He could thank Bridge for that.
Bridge.
Bridge with his fire and his notebook and his questions, endless, mind-numbing questions that left Chiar screaming–
“Chiar!”
Chiar flinched back, throat dry and hands sweaty. Shadows contracted around his skin and he inhaled sharply to bring them back into place– inside him– where they belonged.
Since when did Bridge have white hair and glasses?
“Chiar? Are you with me? Speak to me.”
Why did Bridge speak so kindly? Was this another one of his games? What was the point?
The floor rose up to meet him as Chiar slid down the wall. Wooden floor. Not stone. Oh. Right.
Fantastic.
The world stopped spinning long enough for Chiar to recognise the candle-lit table did not hold torches. That the room he was in was not a cell, but a tall-ceilinged dining hall
And the person crouched in front of him was not Bridge.
“Azide?”
There was relief behind the glasses. Azide drew their hands back and steepled their fingers as they rocked on their heels. “Was it the candles?”
Chiar scrambled to his feet, almost knocking Azide back as he did so. “No.”
Azide also stood, a bit more reluctantly. “I’m no fool. Those are burn scars on your hand. Aren’t they?”
Chiar clutched his hand closer. His eyes glittered blue. “If you’re not a fool, you wouldn’t need me to answer that.”
Azide’s hand steeple collapsed and they instead started to fidget with their rings.
Chiar turned. “If you’ll excuse me, I will be in the quarters you’ve so graciously lent me.”
Azide watched him leave. Then, slowly, they blew out the candles one by one. They locked them in a cabinet, not to be used again.
