🔥 FIRST LINE 🔥

First lines have to do a lot of work, from setting a scene to drawing in readers, but as an author whose books tend to be dramatically different in tone, I also think a lot about the way first lines also establish expectations for who is telling the story and who they're telling it to.

WE ARE NOT FREE had 13 first-person narrators (one of them plural) telling their stories from their own perspectives. 1000 STEPS had one third-person narrator telling Miuko's story, and layered on top of that was the idea that the manuscript had been ""found"" by some hermetic scholar of Awaran folktales, who added their own explanatory footnotes to the text.

And now KINDLING is written from a second-person perspective that roams from character to character (seven of them, of course). I've loved this point of view for years, and I usually jump at the excuse to use it (like in Keiko's chapter of WE ARE NOT FREE), but I dreaded the idea of taking it on for KINDLING. I mean, a whole novel? A multi-POV novel? Written in second person? How could I ever keep that up over 400 pages? How could that possibly be sustainable? And, let me tell you, I tried to resist. I tried to write it in third. And then first. And then third again. But the story refused to go anywhere (I couldn't even get past the first few pages) until I embraced the *you* of it all.

Three Youths Forcibly Disappeared in Mashke, Balochistan

On December 26, 2024, Pakistani forces detained and forcibly disappeared three youths—Hamid son of Noro, Adam son of Azam, and Sameer son of Akbar—in Mashke Awaran, Balochistan. The trio, residents of Mishke Farwar, were reportedly on a picnic when taken.

Their whereabouts remain unknown, no charges have been disclosed, and they have not been presented before any legal institution. The families are deeply worried and demand their immediate release.

یہ ایک تاریخی دن تھا۔ وزیراعظم عمران خان نے کراچی کی قسمت بدلنے کے لئے پانچ ستمبر کو گیارہ کھرب 13 ارب روپے کے ایک تاریخی پیکیج کا اعلان کیا۔ کراچی پاکستان کا سب سے بڑا شہر ہے اور اس شہر کے لئے جتنا بھی کیا جائے کم ہے۔ اس سے قبل بھی وزیراعظم نے کراچی کے لئے ایک بڑے پیکیج کا اعلان کیا تھا لیکن اُس پر عمل درآمد نہیں ہوا۔ اُمید ہے کہ گیارہ کھرب 13 ارب روپے کا نصف بھی کراچی پر خرچ ہو گیا تو اس شہر کے بڑے بڑے مسائل حل ہو جائیں گے۔ ہفتہ کے دن جب وزیراعظم عمران خان کراچی میں تاریخی پیکیج کا اعلان کر رہے تھے تو میں پاکستان کے سب سے پسماندہ اور غریب علاقے آواران کے لوگوں سے اُن کی محرومیوں کی داستانیں سُن رہا تھا۔ آواران بلوچستان کے جنوب میں واقع ہے۔ 1992ء میں اسے ضلع کا درجہ ملا تھا۔ قبل ازیں یہ خضدار کا سب ڈویژن تھا۔ آواران کا علاقہ گوادر، لسبیلہ، کیچ، پنجگور، خضدار اور خاران کے درمیان واقع ہے۔

بلوچستان کے سابق وزیر اعلیٰ قدوس بزنجو کا تعلق اسی علاقے سے ہے لیکن آواران شہر کو جانے والی سڑکوں کی حالت دیکھ کر ایسا لگتا ہے کہ اس علاقے کے مکینوں کا کوئی والی وارث نہیں۔ آپ کو یہ سُن کر حیرانی ہو گی کہ صرف آواران نہیں بلکہ ابھی تک تربت اور گوادر سمیت جنوبی بلوچستان کے کئی علاقے واپڈا کی بجلی استعمال نہیں کرتے بلکہ ان علاقوں کے لئے ایران سے بجلی آتی ہے۔ ان علاقوں میں آپ کو پاکستان اسٹیٹ آئل (پی ایس او) سمیت کسی پرائیویٹ کمپنی کا پٹرول پمپ نظر نہیں آئے گا۔ یہاں پر اسمگل شدہ ایرانی تیل استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔ ان علاقوں کو گیس بھی نہیں ملتی۔ پینے کا صاف پانی نہیں۔ اسکولوں کی عمارتیں موجود ہیں اور طلبہ و طالبات پڑھنے کے لئے تیار ہیں لیکن اسکولوں میں تربیت یافتہ اُستاد نہیں۔ آواران شہر میں ایک ڈسٹرکٹ ہیڈ کوارٹر ہسپتال موجود ہے جو متحدہ عرب امارات کے تعاون سے تعمیر کیا گیا۔ اس ہسپتال میں ایک ماڈرن آپریشن تھیٹر اور لیبر روم کے علاوہ چلڈرن وارڈ بھی موجود ہے لیکن ہسپتال کے میڈیکل سپرنڈنٹ نے بتایا کہ لیبر روم استعمال نہیں ہوتا کیونکہ اُن کے پاس لیڈی ڈاکٹر نہیں ہے۔

آپریشن تھیٹر کو چلانے کے لئے پاکستان آرمی نے کچھ سرجن دیئے ہیں لیکن یہاں مزید ڈاکٹروں کی ضرورت ہے۔ صوبائی حکومت جب کسی ڈاکٹر کی اس ہسپتال میں تعیناتی کرتی ہے تو وہ یہاں آنے سے انکار کر دیتا ہے کیونکہ یہاں بجلی اور گیس کے بغیر رہنا بہت مشکل ہے۔ آواران کے لوگوں نے مجھے کہا کہ اگر آواران اور بیلہ کے درمیان سڑک کی مرمت کر دی جائے تو اُن کے کئی مسائل حل ہو سکتے ہیں۔ یہاں پر کھجور کے علاوہ پیاز کی کاشت کی جاتی ہے۔ مقامی لوگ اپنی پیداوار کراچی تو دور کی بات تربت، گوادر اور خضدار تک بڑی مشکل سے پہنچاتے ہیں۔ ڈیڑھ سو کلو میٹر کی ایک سڑک اُنہیں پاکستان کے ساتھ جوڑ سکتی ہے۔ آواران کے مرکزی بازار میں گھومتے ہوئے مجھے محکمہ جنگلات کا دفتر نظر آیا۔ میں نے پوچھا یہاں تو کوئی جنگل ہی نہیں تو محکمہ جنگلات کے دفتر میں لوگ کیا کام کرتے ہیں؟ پتہ چلا کہ یہاں کئی سرکاری محکموں کے دفاتر تو ہیں اور وہاں لوگوں نے اپنی تعیناتیاں بھی کرا رکھی ہیں لیکن نہ کوئی دفتر آتا ہے نہ کام کرتا ہے البتہ تنخواہیں وصول کرنے کے لئے لوگ باقاعدگی سے آتے ہیں۔

آواران کے آس پاس کوئی سمندر ہے نہ دریا لیکن یہاں فشریز ڈیپارٹمنٹ کا دفتر بھی موجود ہے۔ مختلف سرکاری محکموں میں دو ہزار سے زیادہ سرکاری ملازمین تعینات ہیں اور ان میں سے صرف ڈیڑھ سو ملازمین فنکشنل ہیں۔ گھوسٹ ملازمین کی تنخواہوں پر خرچ ہونے والی رقم سڑکیں بنانے پر خرچ کی جائے تو آواران والوں کا بہت بھلا ہو سکتا ہے۔ آواران سمیت جنوبی بلوچستان کے دیگر پسماندہ علاقوں کی محرومیوں نے یہاں کے نوجوانوں میں وہ غصہ اور بے چینی پیدا کی ہے، جسے پاکستان کے دشمن اپنے مذموم مقاصد کے لئے استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ یہاں کے نوجوانوں کو اسلحہ، بارود اور پیسہ اُسی راستے سے ملتا ہے جس راستے سے کلبھوشن یادیو پاکستان آیا۔ آواران میں مقامی لوگوں نے بتایا کہ یہاں ایف سی والوں نے ایک اسکول بنایا ہے اور وہاں آرمی ایجوکیشن کور کے اساتذہ کو پڑھانے کے لئے لایا گیا ہے۔

عجیب بات تھی کہ ہسپتال کو ڈاکٹر بھی فوج دے اور اسکولوں کو اساتذہ بھی فوج دے تو پھر صوبائی حکومت کیا کرتی ہے؟ اگر کسی نے پاکستان میں سیاسی اشرافیہ اور سول ایڈمنسٹریشن کی ناکامی کی وجوہات کو سمجھنا ہے تو اُسے آواران ضرور آنا چاہئے۔ یہاں ایف سی سائوتھ بلوچستان کے افسران سے بات چیت ہوئی تو اُنہوں نے بتایا کہ ہمارے وسائل محدود ہیں لیکن ہم نے اپنے محدود وسائل میں مقامی لوگوں کو صرف اسکول اور دستکاری سینٹر نہیں بلکہ دکانیں بھی بنا کر دی ہیں۔ یہ کوشش بھی کی جا رہی ہے کہ مقامی نوجوانوں کو ایف سی میں بھرتی کیا جائے۔ اس مقصد کے لئے مقامی نوجوانوں کو کئی رعائتیں دی جا رہی ہیں۔ پنجاب اور خیبر پختونخوا کے نوجوانوں کے لئے ایف سی میں بھرتی کے لئے کم از کم ایف اے پاس ہونا ضروری ہے لیکن ایف سی سائوتھ بلوچستان نے مقامی نوجوانوں کے لئے مڈل پاس ہونے کا معیار مقرر کیا ہے اور قد کے معاملے میں بھی سہولت دی ہے۔

گزشتہ دنوں تربت میں ایک افسوسناک واقعہ پیش آیا تھا جس میں ایف سی کے ایک اہلکار کے ہاتھوں حیات بلوچ نامی نوجوان قتل ہو گیا تھا۔ اس قتل پر پورے بلوچستان میں غم و غصے کی لہر دوڑ گئی۔ میں آواران سے تربت پہنچا تو ایف سی سائوتھ بلوچستان کے ہیڈ کوارٹر میں ایک ایسے افسر سے ملاقات کا موقع ملا جس نے خود اس واقعہ کی انکوائری کی تھی۔ اس افسر نے بتایا کہ ہم نے وقوعہ کے دو گھنٹے بعد ہی اپنے جوان کو پولیس کے حوالے کر دیا۔ یہ جوان کچھ عرصہ قبل ایک حملے میں زخمی ہوا تھا لیکن ہماری انکوائری میں وہ گناہ گار نکلا لہٰذا ہم نا صرف پولیس کے کام میں مداخلت نہیں کر رہے بلکہ اُس کا کورٹ مارشل بھی کریں گے اور آئی جی ایف نے حیات بلوچ کے والد سے جا کر تعزیت بھی کی اور انصاف دلانے کا وعدہ بھی کیا ہے۔ میں اس واقعہ کا مجید اچکزئی کے باعزت بری ہونے کے واقع سے کوئی تقابل نہیں کرنا چاہتا۔

حیات بلوچ کے والد کو انصاف مل گیا تو یہ بلوچستان میں اُمید کی ایک نئی کرن بنے گا۔ سوال یہ ہے کہ حیات بلوچ کے والد کو تو انصاف مل جائے گا لیکن پاکستان کے پسماندہ ترین علاقے آواران کو انصاف کون دے گا؟ بلوچستان میں تو تحریک انصاف، اُس کے اتحادیوں کی حکومت ہے۔ آواران میں گیارہ کھرب نہیں گیارہ ارب روپے سے بھی کام چل سکتا ہے۔

NHA invites bids for construction of Hoshab-Awaran-Khuzdar motorway.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has invited bids for the construction of the Hoshab-Awaran-Khuzdar section (146 kms) of the M-8 motorway.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Lt. Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa on Sunday informed that the tender for the project had been opened and the project would bring prosperity in the Southern areas of the Balochistan province.

He said the project would improve the connectivity of Gwadar Port, and revolutionize the socio-economic development of the region.

Asim who is also Chairman China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority said on Twitter that with the construction of the motorway, long-term deprivation of the local people would be addressed who were waiting for such development for decades.

Cycle of Extrajudicial Killings and Enforced Disappearances Continues in Balochistan

On December 1, 2024, the bullet-riddled bodies of two individuals, Faqeer Jan and Asa Baloch, were discovered in the Buzdad Berberki River area of Awaran. Both men had been forcibly disappeared by Pakistani state authorities months prior to their bullet-riddled bodies have been found.

Faqeer Jan, a resident of Kunri Buzdad, was abducted on September 26, 2024, following his detention by Pakistani forces. Asa Baloch, from Paho, had been missing since February 17, 2023. The discovery of their bullet-ridden bodies underscores the disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings disguised as staged encounters.

ize The International Voice of Baloch Missing Persons (IVBMP) strongly condemns these heinous acts and calls on international human rights groups and the global community to denounce the ongoing human rights abuses perpetrated by the Pakistani state. The IVBMP urges a thorough and independent investigation into these killings under the supervision of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (@WGEID) and demands the immediate release of all individuals currently subjected to enforced disappearance.

The organization emphasizes the urgent need for international intervention to address the systemic issue of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan.
