you had been waiting in the waiting room for an employee to help you and chris. you were excited about finally being able to do an escape room and hoped you were ‘locked in’ enough so that you were able to find your way out.

your hands were intertwined with chris’s as he caressed them with his thumb. “how excited are you baby?” he had a big smile on his face. you fiddled with his bracelet as your leg bounced in anticipation. “i’m gonna get out of this shit in like 5 minutes watch.”

the room was dark. you couldn’t see a single thing the only thing lighting up the small closet was the light from the room you just came from, seeping through the bottom of the crack.

“c-chris?” you called out putting your arms out to see what was around you.

“baby? where’d you go?” his voice sounded like it was coming from the other side of the room.

you nodded trying to hype yourself up. you wish you had a flashlight or something to help but the employees had taken your phones so you wouldn’t cheat or anything. you dropped to the floor starting at the bottom as you felt lightheaded. you felt over the carpet looking for anything to help. there was nothing until you felt a hard surface. you felt around and noticed it was a box of some sort. “i found a box in here. like a chest.” you informed chris.

“okay, perfect good job baby. doing so good. now can you open it?” he spoke through the cracks. you looked for the latch and thank god it wasn’t locked. you opened it and felt inside immediately touching a few things. one of them was a soft fabric, another was a folded paper, and then one that was extremely important was exactly what you wished for — a flashlight.

“oh thank god.” you whispered to yourself. you clicked it but it wouldn’t turn on. “god damn it come on.” you grew frustrated. you hit it a few times before it finally budged. “found a flashlight.” you grinned before looking around the room. it was like a costume closet filled with racks of clothes. you surveyed the room more before looking back in the box. you saw the paper which read a few sentences — a riddle.

you read it again to yourself. “behind the garb of many faces… garb. clothing. pull the thread? thread like to make clothes… okay. there you’ll find the hidden lever.” you looked around and locked eyes on the rack of clothing. “the costumes!” you yelped.

you quickly set the parchment in the box before parting the garments in the middle and saw a beautiful silver lever. you quickly pulled it unlatching something in the door. you then saw how light seeped into the closet.

you turned and saw chris had opened the door for you. “you did it baby!!” he smiled as you jumped into his arms.

“i did i did!” you jumped, feeling proud of yourself. you then turned to look behind chris. “chris the door! it’s open!” you pointed toward the exit.

After taking a "blog break," I’m excited to start sharing some of the projects I’ve been working on during my time away! One of the highlights is a custom widget I created for Notion—a photocard featuring my favorite band, PLAVE. This widget is perfect for fellow PLAVE fans (Plli), allowing them to display a "fanmade" photocard of their favorite band members right on their Notion pages.

I began this project not only to celebrate my love for PLAVE but also to dive deeper into the world of Notion widgets and explore what’s possible.

Let’s dive into the details of how I built it and the creative process behind it!

I started this project back in May, right after I discovered PLAVE in April! Around that time, I started following a 'photocard editor' on Twitter who creates these fantastic 'unofficial' collectible photocards of PLAVE. I fell in love with her edits immediately. I was also using Notion extensively to keep my Korean studies organized, so I thought, why not combine my passion for Korean learning with my love for PLAVE?

I wanted to create a public widget that other PLAVE fans could easily add into their own Notion pages. To be respectful and ensure proper credit, I reached out to the editor, Jane, to ask if I could use her edits in my widget. I explained my project idea and shared some Figma wireframes to show how the widget would look and function. Jane was excited about the concept and gave me her blessing to move forward. I didn’t start any programming until I had her approval!

For this project, I needed to create two main components: the widget itself and a webpage with information and installation instructions. Surprisingly, the info and installation page turned out to be more challenging than developing the widget! I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so I wanted to ensure the page was user-friendly, responsive, and easy to navigate. It was tougher than I wished for!

As for the widget, it was relatively straightforward to develop and only took me about two days. However, I did face some issues with broken links that I still need to fix, and I’m not quite sure why they’re not working. Usually, I’m a ReactJS enthusiast, but since this was a smaller project, I decided to use my "beginner combo": HTML, CSS (including SCSS), and JavaScript. I quickly realized how accustomed I’ve become to ReactJS because I kept writing code that didn’t work in Vanilla JavaScript—talk about a wake-up call!

In the end, I completed the project to a point where it was ready to present to both the PLLIs (PLAVE fans) and Jane. I found myself eagerly awaiting Jane’s feedback because her artwork was integral to the project. If she wasn’t happy with the outcome, I would have felt the same. Thankfully, she loved it! I officially posted the widget on Twitter/X, and Jane shared it as well. Although most of the users were Korean, reading their translated positive comments made me genuinely happy.

Who knows? Maybe in the future, I’ll work on another PLAVE-themed project. I really enjoyed creating this one!

My thoughts on George's crash and the VSC that followed.

First, let's not be influenced too much by George's radio message. In between the crash itself, being in the middle of the track and the position of the car, he was understandably panicked. Which means he wasn't the most objective person at that time!

Reminder about the flags :

Double yellow: This means drivers need to reduce their speed significantly, cannot overtake and must be prepared to change direction or stop, due to a hazard wholly or partly blocking the track and/or marshals working on or beside the track. Red flag A red flag is waved at the start line – and at each marshal post around the circuit – when officials have decided to stop a practice session, qualifying session or race, with reasons ranging from a serious incident to poor weather conditions. In practice and qualifying, all drivers are required to reduce their speed and proceed slowly back to their respective pit garages, while in the race, all drivers are required to reduce their speed and proceed slowly to the pit lane, line up at the exit and await instructions.

Fundamentally, apart from stopping the session/race, there isn't a big difference between a double yellow and a red flag. In both cases, drivers need to slow down a lot and can't overtake. Both flags can signal a hazard on track.

Usually, a red flag isn't waved first. It's preceded by a yellow/double yellow so getting the yellow and then double yellow first was logical.

George's crash happened in the last lap. Stopping the race then would have meant restarting it for only one lap with a huge risk of further incidents!

The main risk here was Lance who was the closest car behind George. Yellow or Red flad wouldn't have made a diffence in how fast he was informed of George's car being in the middle of the road.

Next driver was Yuki and he had enough time to slow down a lot.

If there had been a car following more closely, once again yellow or red wouldn't have made a difference.

They went with the VSC rather than the SC because with one lap left they wouldn't have had time to put the SC in front of everyone probably.

All of that being said, I personaly think a Red flag wasn't that evident and, more importantly, wouldn't have reduced the risks.

Two side-notes :

Like @justyouwaitsunshine said here , the way race control can talk to all the drivers and teams directly in Formula E could really have helped here! Because outside of the flags, the important info here was that George's car was in the middle of the road!

Also, this corner is a quite dangerous one! Not in itself but mostly because cars going out there often bounce back once or twice and ends up in the middle of the road. The track being where it is I'm not sure there are many solutions to that but I hope they will have a look at it for next year!

Y/N is startled awake as the trailer door slams shut. She hadn’t intended to doze off while she awaited Eddie’s return from his Hellfire Club meeting. She was more tired than usual since this week at the video store had seemed busier. She wasn’t sure if it was the upcoming spring break or the fact that everyone had chosen to host a movie night this week. She was sorting through the returned VCRs when she started falling asleep at the counter, and Steve had instructed her to go home. 

As Eddie entered his bedroom with a discouraged expression on his face, she sat up on the bed. The mischievous gleam in his deep brown eyes had faded, and his shoulders slumped. 

“What’s wrong?” she asked as he flung himself on the bed next to her. His face hit the pillow as he screamed in frustration and murmured something she couldn’t quite make out. “I’m sorry. What was that? I don’t understand your pillow grumbling.” 

He groans into the faintly stained pillow once more before turning onto his back and looking up at her. “I’m failing yet again.” 

“No, you’re not,” she responds, perplexed as to why he would believe so. He assured her that he was passing his classes, albeit not with an A or even a B, but he was well on his way to graduating.  

“Ms. O'Donnell told me today that I was barely passing her class,” he informs her. “I have to pass her final or I won’t graduate…again.” 

She frowns, remembering her days in the old teacher’s classroom, Prior to starting a relationship with Eddie, she had never had any problems with the teacher. In fact, she had warned her against being in a relationship with Eddie, claiming that the metalhead would only bring her down to his level. “I’m pretty sure the old hag just has it in for you.”  

He sighs, “Or I’m just stupid.” 

She reprimands him for talking so negatively about himself by giving him a little tap on the shoulder. “You’re not stupid. You just struggle sometimes. You are not failing, either. "You just need to pass this final, like you mentioned.” 

“And how am I going to achieve that?” he asks cynically. 

“I’ll help with your studies,” She gets up from his bed and walks over to the desk, which was across the room. She searches through the notebooks until she locates the one she gave him that had all of her notes from the previous year. He sits up as she returns to the bed and settles back down next to him. “Have you gone over my notes from last year?” 

He has a remorseful expression in his eyes as she glances at him. He hadn’t even glanced at her notes, if he were being completely honest. In order to create room for the notebooks that contained all his notes and campaigns for his Dungeons & Dragons adventures, he pushed her notebooks aside and quickly forgot about them. 

“You haven’t, have you?” His silence was all the answer she needed. “Edward Munson.”  

He rolls his eyes, “Jesus Christ, don’t you start on me.”  

He hated that he was letting her down. He didn’t want to. She had been by his side through both his failure to graduate while she graduated herself last year. She had the opportunity to end their relationship and move on to someone else, but she stuck with him, offered him support, and continued to love him through it all. 

“Look through my notes. I’ve highlighted everything that should be helpful,” she instructs him. “I’ll do my best to help you if there is anything you need help with.”  

“I’m struggling with everything,” he admits, leaning back against his headboard. She feels Eddie drawing circles on her back. His light touches her, sending a thrill through her body. “Where are you up to in class?”  

As he tells her where they were up to, he leans closer, his chest against her back, kissing her from her shoulder to her neck. She chews her lower lip as she flips through the pages, looking for the necessary notes. 

“Eddie,” she breathes softly, a whimper caught in her throat. As he puts his lips on her sweet spot, his teeth graze her skin. To prevent any further moans from escaping her throat, she bites her lip more firmly. “You need to study,” 

“I can do that later,” he replies, moving away from her neck and turning her head towards him. He takes the notebook from her grasp and tosses it to the side, while he crushes his lips to hers in a bruising kiss. 

He pushes her back into the bed, as he crawls over top of her, running his ringed hands beneath his Dio shirt that she’s wearing. With one knee bowed against his hip and the other wedged between his legs, she pulls on his shirt to draw him closer. She was aware that he was doing this to divert her attention from his difficulties. She would allow the distraction… this time.

Await Further Instructions (2018)

Unfortunately, Await Further Instructions was released in 2018 when its message was neither shocking nor revolutionary and certain elements of its horror now have unintended meanings. It means you’ve almost certainly seen a better version of this story elsewhere. Despite this, its effectiveness while it plays is hard to deny.

After distancing himself from his family for three years, Nick (Sam Gittins) agrees to bring his girlfriend Annji (Neerja Naik) over for Christmas dinner. Things do not go well. The couple decide to leave the next morning but find that a barrier now encircles the house. No one can leave, the internet is down and their telephones cannot send or receive calls. Suddenly, a message from the authorities appears on the television. Though father Tony (Grant Masters), mother Beth (Abigail Cruttenden), Nick’s sister Kate (Holly Weston), her husband Scott (Kris Saddler) and Grandad David Bradley) insist on following the TV’s instructions, Nick and Annji are unsure whoever is sending them has good intentions.

Imagine bringing your significant other to meet your family for the first time and having your worst fears confirmed: they’re still narrow-minded, stupid and racially biased. Christmas is ruined. It goes from bad to worse when you realize you can't leave. In this film, it's not a snowstorm keeping everyone inside. It's something else. Stuck in the house with everyone already on edge, resentment and paranoia build and are amplified by the mysterious text that appears on the TV. Now, our protagonists are stuck in a mental asylum. Everyone else is crazy but them. Is the right choice to pretend like they're one of them or try to talk some sense into everyone else? What this movie does right is put you in the shoes of Nick and Annji. The racism Annji faces is obvious but it’s not ham-fisted. It’s a mispronounced name from mom, an assumption from dad or Kate and side comments from Grandad that tell you this is a bad place to be. You don’t like Nick’s family. Even mom, who has a chance of changing her ways, is such a doormat that you resent her even more than Tony, who is trying to be this big man by forcing everyone to follow the TV’s orders. His insistence on being a leader while taking orders from someone who - as far as Nick, Annji and we can tell - has no real authority and no proven good intentions towards the family would be hilarious if it weren’t so frightening. Every time the message on the television changes, “Await Further Instructions” tightens its grip around your throat.

You’ll be scared. You'll sweat. The picture’s message about not following orders blindly is good… but this is also where things get muddled. We never - not for a second - believe whoever is sending messages through the TV is the government. There’s something sinister going on. What that is, I can’t say without giving too much away. Ultimately, the movie is about holding onto your beliefs even when authorities (in this case, the television or the "government" sending messages through the TV) tell you to do something you know is wrong. To some viewers, that might include not vaccinating your children, which is an unfortunate message. As for the TV thing? It’s a little too late for that. For this kind of message to work in the 2010s, it needed to be people’s cell phones giving them the instructions, or QAnon conspiracy-theory loonies feeding bad info. Things get even wobblier when our questions are finally answered. Not all of it holds up. It doesn’t mean it isn’t chilling but this needed another pass through the keyboard. It’s almost as if writer Gavin Williams didn’t know what to do with the ending until it came time to submit it to the studio.

A story's flaws are always amplified when they come in during a movie’s last act and unfortunately, Await Further Instructions drops the ball at the worst time possible. Is it enough to toss away the whole thing? I don’t think so. The tension built up as the family turns on each other, the discomfort Annji and Nick feel, the fear as the trickle of revelations come in are all expertly done. I don’t expect anyone who sees Await Further Instructions to be compelled to watch it more than once or call it a favorite. That’s ok. (November 27, 2020)
