I’ve got a lot of gripes with The Royal Heir but I think my biggest one is how unsatisfying the conclusion of TRH 3’s plot was.
Barthelemy is, in my opinion, the most maddening Choices villain there is, and we didn’t get nearly enough of an end to his arc. Even with Bradshaw and Isabella we got the choice of whether or not we reveal the truth about the twins or keep it as leverage before we banish them from Cordonia and reject their alliance, and then later on in The Royal Finale we learn that they’ve lost the crown, and depending on who becomes Queen of Auvernal, risk being tried for their crimes and imprisoned. A pretty fitting conclusion to their characters and arc, in my humble opinion.
But TRH 3’s plot (and by extension, Barthelemy’s arc) just…kind of ends? We trot out during his coronation, interrupt it, play the recording implicating him in Queen Eleanor’s assassination, and he’s just…immediately arrested, never to be seen again. It’s very anticlimactic to say the least, especially when you take into account just how much torment Barthelemy put the MC and their family through, and how much he seemed to enjoy that torment, too!
The Royal Heir should’ve been a single book of about 10ish chapters that served as a supplement to TRR, showcasing the MC and her spouse’s married life and a few moments in time as they start their family. It did not benefit from any of what was done in regards to the Auvernal betrothal plot, the Barthelemy regent plot, or the Via Imperii plot.

Cappadocia
King’s Study, Cordonian Palace
Bright rays of light streamed through the bay windows as Liam sat down at his desk to open and review the mail he received while away on his honeymoon.
Next to his ornate inbox on his desk, was the morning paper.
He dropped the stack of correspondence he had just picked up back down as he read the bold lettering printed above the picture captured of the Royal couple leaving the jet as they arrived home.
‘IS OUR HEIR HOME?’
‘KING LIAM SMILES WIDELY ARRIVING WITH HIS QUEEN.’
***
Reclining his chair, his thoughts went back in time to just four weeks ago...
...it all started on their honeymoon, when Javier knocked the spoon of amuse bouche, having raw fish, out of Riley’s hand. Giving his apologies, ‘To have almost destroyed Cordonia’s future’, he assumed that Riley was pregnant.
Taking it in stride, they laughed together as if nothing had happened, and continued with a leisurely dinner.
...and then the intrusion of camera flashes, unknown at the time, were from unwelcome and uninvited paparazzi that were invading their privacy. It wasn’t until they arrived home and read the articles written about them and seen the pictures in the tabloids, did they realize how truly intrusive those cameras had been.
...and on the last night on the island being told that the King and Queen of Auvernal arrived uninvited, wanting ‘to discuss the issue of his heir’.
Arriving home with ‘a massive crowd of citizens and paparazzi’ waiting at Valtoria, which was to be expected.
Yes, it was a normal occurrence for me, but for Riley, it was a new reality. A world she had never personally experienced before.
My Queen won the hearts of our people and answered their questions with confidence and grace, despite the audacity of the press.
As we entered the estate, however, the intrusive remarks by members of the court were even more personal and direct.
...and then there was Madeleine. She was not only rude, but also snide and sarcastic.
Liam’s thoughts were interrupted by a light knocking on the door of his study.
“Come,” he said without looking up from his desk.
Opening the door slowly, Riley stepped inside quietly closing the door behind her.
“I hope I am not interrupting...” she began to say hesitantly.
“Riley, my love, come here.” He smiled warmly as he stood and quickly moved around his desk. Taking her into his arms, “you are always welcome here, anytime.”
“Hi Liam,” Riley smiles coyly, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Breathing in her sweet smelling hair, Liam placed his hand on her neck and tilted her head up to capture a not so innocent kiss on her lips.
After a few long seconds of exchanging passionate kisses, Liam pulled away, and gently caressed her cheek.
“What would you say if I told you that we are going on an adventure this weekend?"
A broad smile spread across her face, and she looked up at him in anticipation.
“I would say, ‘when do we leave?’”
Chuckling, Liam took her hand and led her to sit on the sofa by the bay window.
Sitting down in a wingback chair directly across from Riley, Liam said,
“‘What we need is space to ourselves.’ We have been home for a day and a half, and I think we need a distraction.”
Riley giggled, "Oh, my King, that look in your eye tells me that you thought of something spectacular!"
“Yes, My Queen, Indeed I did," he smiled widely.
Laughing, Liam reached over and pulled her onto his lap, and gave her another kiss.
"How does riding in a hot air balloon at sunrise over vast valleys sound? Or staying at a luxury hotel inside of a cave within a sandstone cliff?”
“Oh my, yes! That sounds amazing!”
“Good, because that is exactly what I have planned for us this upcoming week,” he said with a twinkle in his eyes.
"Love, we are going to Cappadocia, Turkey.”
“Really? I thought we were going on a road trip in the U.S. with Hana, Maxwell and Drake?” Riley questioned, raising her eyebrow.
“Don’t worry we will still arrive on Texas in time for Bertrand and Savannah’s wedding. But, instead of sharing time with our friends, I decree, my queen needs pampering.”
***
Royal Jet, on the tarmac
Aboard the Royal jet, Riley was settling into her seat as Liam discussed the flight plans with the pilot before take-off.
“Your majesty, the flight will take approximately three hours, and we should be arriving in Cappadocia shortly after.”
“Thank you, Captain,” Liam replied.
Turning to Riley, “It seems like our adventure is just about ready to start.”
Bastien and Mara were just entering the cabin, taking their seats behind the Royal couple as the sound of the engines increased in sound.
As the jet lifted off the tarmac, Liam squeezed Riley’s hand.
“We are going to see a part of the world that most people have never been to before. We’re going to experience things that very few people ever get to enjoy. And, most importantly, we are going to spend time away from court.”
“Madeleine, Godfrey, and our royal visitors are going to revolt. When they find out we left the Capital, they...”
“Riley, you forget something very, very important. You are my Queen now. Our word is law in Cordonia. As far as Bradshaw, Isabella and Amalas are concerned, they are uninvited guests and do not dictate our schedules. The reason there is a Royal council is to support the Crown in whatever the Queen and King decides.”
“I’m sorry, Liam, I shouldn’t worry about everyone else.”
Smiling, Liam kissed her hand, “It’s just one of your qualities that I love so much. Sometimes you must let go of the reins otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy. Okay?”
Grinning and nodding her head, Riley asked, “now, tell me more about this trip; what do you have in-store for us?”
“Well, once we arrive in Cappadocia, we are going to travel to a town called Goreme. That is where the hotel we are staying at is situated. It’s just outside of Goreme. The entire town is built into the side of a mountain, with many caves that are used for living quarters by locals.”
“It sounds amazing!”
“There are several other villages near Goreme, including Selime and Nevsehir. All of them are lush and green, especially during the spring season. There are hot springs that we can enjoy, as well as several museums and ruins that we will visit. The area is rich in history, as well as culture.”
“Oh Liam, it sounds incredible.”
“Yes, it is. Now, I want you to relax and let me plan everything. I know how much you love surprises, and I don’t intend to disappoint.”
With a wink, Liam added, “and, we will have lots of opportunities to work on our family.”
***
When they landed in Cappadocia, a large white Mercedes SUV was waiting to escort them to their hotel in Goreme.
As they travelled, Liam explained the local landscapes, including the tall, cone shaped rock formations known as ‘fairy chimneys’. “These were formed 60 million years ago after a sequence of volcanic eruptions hit the area.
The name ‘Cappadocia’ is derived from the Persian word, ‘Katpatuka’, meaning the land of beautiful horses. In ancient times, gifts or tributes of horses from this region were presented to ancient Assyrian and Persian kings.”
“It sounds like horses were paid for taxes to the crown,” Riley replied.
“Yes, in fact the locals here still value horses and offer visitors an alternate mode of transport, instead of motor vehicles.”
Liam directed the driver to slow down as they travelled by the rock cut churches. “They say that these churches number up to 600, and there is a possibility that many are yet to be discovered. The chapels were carved into the soft rock by monks in the dark ages, and some of them have kept their original impressive frescoes with amazing detail.
Superstitious locals scratched out the eyes of some of the figures due to the fear of the ‘evil eye’.”
“Well, we can check it out tomorrow morning after our balloon cruise.”
Kayakapi Premium Caves Hotel
After checking in, they were personally ushered to their penthouse suite by the resort chamberlain.
“Your Majesties, this hotel is set inside 8 original fairy chimneys and has an indoor pool that resembles an ancient Roman bathhouse and spa.”
Liam squeezed Riley’s hand, pulling her close to his side.
Continuing, the chamberlain pointed out the traditional artifacts and artwork throughout the hotel as they walked passing by the sunrise balloon viewing terrace.
Arriving inside their penthouse suite, Liam chuckled watching Riley’s jaw drop.
“You didn’t tell me there was a pool.... inside our suite!”
“Of course not,” Liam said with a laugh.
Laughing, she smacked him playfully on the arm.
“No, you did not.”
“Oh good.”
Liam set her down on the edge of the pool, then poured two flutes of champagne and handed one to her.
“To our new life together,” clinking their crystal flutes.
Taking a sip of champagne, Riley held her flute up, “to riding the skies tomorrow.”
Liam raised his flute and added,
“Because at sunrise we will be on a hot air balloon ride, for the absolute best view of the region in all its glory.”
***
“Love is in the air”
“OH. MY. GOD. I feel like we are flying over the moon!’
As Liam stepped up behind Riley, he wrapped his arms around her waist in a hug and placed a soft kiss on her neck.
“Hidden beneath the landscape are over 50 underground cities. An interesting fact is that these cities held all the necessary facilities to lead an everyday life. These cities had everything a typical town would have, from wine presses to cooking places, oil storage, and livestock pens. These cities served as a safe space for Christians escaping persecution by Arabs.
In fact, the name ‘Goreme’ means ‘one cannot see in here’.”
Leaning back against him. She rested her head on his shoulder.
“I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you, too,” she murmured.
Looking over her shoulder at Liam, “this place is amazing!”
Gazing at the ancient rock formations rising from the ground like castles and churches, Liam smiled.
“It certainly is. I had no idea that these places existed until a few months ago.”
“This is so beautiful,” Riley said, looking around the stunning landscape below.
“Indeed, it is.”
***
Royal jet, en route to the U.S.
Riley awoke from a nap due to turbulence. She sat up in her seat and reached for Liam’s hand.
“What is it? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, the air turbulence is getting to me.”
Lifting her hand to his lips, he gave her a gentle kiss.
Riley felt her stomach turn, and she took a breath.
Moving closer, Liam stroked her cheek.
“Are you sure? You look pale.”
“Thank you so much for taking me on this trip.” Riley was clearly getting emotional. “I love you so much.”
Reaching over, he brushed aside her hair, kissing the top of her
Forehead.
“As soon as the wedding is over, I will take you home.” Riley looked up at her husband, “I am already home.... “You are my home.”

Author’s Notes
It is unversally accepted that a Spanish woman must be late to everything she proposes herself to do/participe, and I am no less lol. But better late than ever, right? This fic was so cute to make and I took inspo from @lorirwritesfanfic ‘s Niceness Test, though the context is a bit different, lol. Also, this is my entry for @hanaleeappreciationweek day four: relationships and home
Summary: Princess Stephanie’s investiture is close by the day, and while she questions her worth as heir, Hana is happy to remind her little blossom of her own worth as future queen.
Rating: G
Word Count: 2.6k
Pairing: Hana Lee x MC (Eclipsa Ice) Liam Rys x OC (mentioned)
Category: Family fluff
Book: The Royal Romance
May, 2038
“What if I mess up and they end up hating me?” Stephanie asked her godfather, the King, as he explained how the investiture of the Crown Princess would be like.
Liam blinked “Pardon?”
Stephanie sighed “What if I do something wrong and I plunge the country into chaos?”
Liam took her hand and squeezed it “You won’t, sweet blossom. If I’ve learned something from you these past eighteen years is how smart and strong you are. You got that from your mother.”
“Which one?”
Liam smiled “Both. You have Mama Hana’s iron will and Mummy Eclipsa’s fiery strength. You always have. Even as a baby, you were quite opinionated.” He joked.
Stephanie giggled “Was I?”
“Oh, yes. But it is a good thing. A ruler must first rule her own mind so they don’t become puppet kings or are driven by paranoia like…”
“Your father, King Constantine?”
Liam nodded, a nostalgic expression on his face. Stephanie bit her lip, feeling awful about having brought up such a topic. Especially with Dowager Queen Regina’s death so recent.
“Forgive me, I overstepped.”
Liam shook his head “Of course not. It is an elephant in the room that should be addressed from time to time.”
Stephanie thought of something to say, but her Mommy Eclipsa’s imposing figure stepped into the room, accompanied by her Mama Hana and her brother Marcus. Marcus bowed with a smile, and Hana embraced her daughter, kissing her forehead “How is my not-so-little blossom?”
“We were discussing queenly behaviours.” Liam stepped up.
Eclipsa smiled “Discussing how you’ll be queen while the king lives! Treason!”
Everyone laughed as Marcus chided his mother for watching too many times Magnificent Century, the Turkish series about Suleyman the Magnificent, which made the room laugh even harder.
Hana took a better look at her daughter: she had grown into a beautiful woman indeed, with thick, black and long hair, hazel eyes and freckles all over her face and part of her upper body, with her Eclipsa’s lips and questioning and defiant look. Many of their neighbours whispered what a wanted heiress she was, despite only remaining thirteen monarchies in Europe, the Auvernese having been abolished after Reena’s death. Isaac Achilles tried to put on a coup and seized the throne for a hundred days, until the military itself formed a government that overthrew him and kicked the Achilles family, proclaiming Auvernal a republic in 2030.
Cordonia had been growing strong, thankfully, and with the Council’s help. Bartie had joined when he turned eighteen, and he was now a man of twenty-one, taking on more duties as his father aged. Duchess Savannah had long retired and passed her time between Texas and Cordonia.
As Stephanie carried on practising the investiture, she and Eclipsa looked at one another. They had gone through much, perhaps too much, but made it to ‘Happier Ever After’ in the end. To the investiture, it was rumoured that Amalas’ son, Henrik, would start vying for Stephanie’s hand. When Hana asked her daughter about it, she gave it a thought before her wise answer calmed her stormy thoughts “I am aware of what an advantageous match would but, but I also know that I am young and have many years ahead of me. I shall entertain him, but I won’t give him hope or anything like that. My marriage must be a sensible choice, not only for myself, but for Cordonia, for he will be the first Prince Consort in many centuries, if it comes to pass.”
Eclipsa whispered her to talk and both went to a quiet corner “How are the plans going? The investiture is this Friday.”
“Everything goes according to plan. I think we may be more nervous than Missmiss.”
They both chuckled, smiling wide at Stephanie’s adorable childhood nickname. It seemed like yesterday when they decided on that name based on Eclipsa’s deceased mother. Hana saw how much Eclipsa had missed her over Stephanie’s life. Indeed, Sonia Palacios had been fire incarnate, and that fiery temper that could light up all of Europe had passed onto Eclipsa and now Stephanie. Marcus was definitely Hana’s son, with her same reserved but sweet nature, her ability to learn new courtly skills, as well as her not-so-secret competitiveness.
He smiled at his sister and Stephanie smiled back, “Please, carry on. We were just checking in.”
Eclipsa and Hana found a corner and silently watched as Stephanie repeated the speech word by word, and Hana was quick to observe how she secretly fidgeted with the hem of her dress. When she looked at her, she gave her an encouraging smile. Marcus kept doing goofy faces, but Stephanie remained unfazed and composed, which was a great accomplishment.
Stephanie knew this was the turning point in her life. Everyone was counting on her. Despite her mothers being the best and most supportive women on earth, as well as the magic of her therapist, not everybody was as wonderful as her moms. The Council pressed on her being perfect, especially Countess Madeleine, in a rather passive-aggressive way. The woman was the embodiment of ‘forever stressed’, being a countess in Cordonia and a duchess in England by her own right, a personal gift from the king for her loyalty after Mr. Godfrey’s arrest. He had died when Steph was but a child.
The next thing coming up was the dress fitting, and Stephanie hated furs and tight, old clothes. Instead, she had convinced Uncle Liam to use a mantle that was made of environmentally safe material and made by Cordonian local textile commerce, and that she wore a tiara and only used the heavy crown on her coronation day only. And thus, Lady Lorelei, her grandmother, had commissioned the best jeweller in the whole world to make a tiara of a mighty heiress. It’d arrive three days before her investiture.
As she tried her white gown, which had been suggested by Duchess Kiara to signal her marriage and commitment to the country, and which the whole council approved, she looked at herself. Her hair, which she had been growing since she was fifteen and was now 48cm long, above the average woman in Cordonia, she thought to herself that, if she dared blink for too long, she’d soon be dressing for her coronation. And being crowned meant having buried a great man.
He was such a splendid king; she knew she’d never be like him. She had been too afraid to tell him, for she didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but a small part of her told her that change was good. He was Liam the Benevolent, the Brave, the People’s King. And she? She was not even a Rys by blood. Her legal name was Ice-Lee. And he had married when Stephanie was 12 to a wonderful woman: the now Queen Wren, a Senegalese self-made billionaire who had stolen Uncle Liam’s heart from her mother. Theirs was a story as beautiful, though lacking the epicness of her mother’s:
Liam had been on a diplomatic trip to Senegal and by then, Wren was a minister and a speech of hers had drawn the heartbroken king. The two of them wouldn’t see one another until she came to a diplomatic visit. They formally had dinner, and, according to Uncle Liam, her striking mind, her wicked wit and her incredible oratory speech had his heart right there, not to mention her striking brown eyes, which had small streaks of violet if one looked closely, an unusual case in a black woman who had been born with the Alexandria Syndrome.
Apparently, before coming to the country, she quitted politics, which, according to her, were not her calling, and invested in a new social media and soon gained incredible wealth overnight, over a million downloads. Right now, it was the second most popular social media, behind Pictagram, though it looks like it will dethrone it any day now.
This time, as Mama Hana had told her a million times, Liam wasted no time in asking her to be his wife and she accepted. She was crowned three months later, the first ever solo coronation of a queen in Europe.
“How’s my little cherub doing?” A familiar voice asked.
Stephanie turned around to look at her mother, Hana. In a way, Steph saw her face in her own. Hana kissed her forehead and squeezed her hand “I hope you like my design.”
“It’s splendid, Mama. You and Aunt Kiara have outdone yourselves.”
Hana smiled “Aunt Penelope helped.”
They both smiled “May I have a moment alone with my mother, please?”
They all left as they curtsied and Stephanie sat on the chair “I have been thinking of something.”
“Tell me, darling.”
She fidgeted with her hair “After the coronation, I’d like to donate my hair to little girls with cancer.”
Hana’s face lightened up “That is amazing, my girl! I am glad that me and your Mummy inspired you into joining the tradition!”
“You did. But…I’d also like to do it for my people, and I don’t want it to be propaganda. I want to earn my subjects’ respect. I don’t want their loyalty just because of Liam’s sake. I want them to trust me to be capable of me doing the job because of who I am.”
Hana’s face worried “Why would you say that?”
Stephanie sighed “I don’t think I deserve it, okay?!” She finally snapped “I feel like I am made heir only because I came out of the womb of the woman a king couldn’t have and wanted to immortalise his love for her! His children, Prince Fabian and Dominic, deserve the crown, not me! I will be the end of the Rys line!” Tears started flowing, and Hana placed her young daughter’s head on her chest.
“Don’t say that, baby! I know that you came here in an unconventional way, but just because you were not born into a dynasty doesn’t make you any less worthy of it. You are strong, capable, smart and qualified enough. And yes, Fabian and Dominic are wonderful boys, but he has recognized you as his legitimate heir many times!” She lifted her chin “When he announced it, I won’t lie: I was scared. To me, duty had been the tomb of life, but the moment I saw Liam with you, I knew it wasn’t entirely true. You’ve proved again and again that you have what it takes.”
Ten years ago
Stephanie had turned eight years old, and Hana observed her as she greeted the guests herself, getting every title right. Hana smiled, and the Dowager Queen leaned on her side “You’ve done an splendid job, my dear. Leo got them wrong on purpose, and Liam was painfully shy, the poor boy. She has Eclipsa’s charisma and your gentle charm.”
Hana smiled wistfully “I hope so. She is everything I wanted to be when I was younger.”
“You’ve outdone yourself. Look at them, they are in love with her! When her Season comes, we might have to draw a list.”
Both women laughed.
“That won’t happen for a long time, hopefully.”
Stephanie chuckled “I remember muttering to myself saying, ‘okay, this one is an earl, so he’d be my lord, and the dukes are graces, like mama’.”
Both chuckled, and Hana’s mind was flooded by yet another memory.
“Or do you remember when, at twelve, you singlehandedly managed your first press questions? I was so proud that day!”
Seven years ago
“Princess Stephanie, here!” The journalist cried.
“Princess Stephanie!” Ana de Luca placed herself between the princess and the door “Everybody saw that outfit you wore with Lord Beaumont! What do you think of people saying you’re too young for tank tops?”
Hana observed in anger and horror as they asked similar vicious questions. She balled her fists and was about to tell them off when Stephanie’s voice surprised her “I think that people should care less of what I wear and more of the true elephant in the room here: that a school burned down and we lost three children to the fire, yet all I see is the fact that I wore once a top. Sort out your priorities.” She lifted her chin and passed her way towards Eclipsa, who had a beaming smile on her face.
Hana hugged her daughter and whispered “Well done, my girl.”
“Look at them, I’ve never been able to make the flashes stop as fast as you, baby!”
Stephanie smiled triumphantly “I am glad to see that the press has changed much ever since. But I just said what everybody was thinking.”
Hana smiled knowingly. She was now legally an adult, but she had much to learn about the world and what people in power really had in their minds.
Four years ago
“I think a tour would be splendid!” Duchess Adelaide cried.
“Wherever should we go then?” Queen Wren inquired.
“Maybe Italy, Spain, New York—,”
“And why not, I don’t know, Senegal, Philippines, Peru, India? Why must we stick to the USA and the Mediterranean countries?”
Madeleine was rendered speechless to say the least. Many muttered, both in agreement and disagreement, and Hana was both impressed and proud, as well as scared for the possible criticism of the Council.
Bartie cleared his throat “Please, explain your point, I’d love to hear it.”
“Yes,” Liam added in support “please, go ahead, Your Highness.”
“Well, these countries have each important relevance, and are rarely visited. They may not be as wealthy in money, but they can still give us an overlooked richness, not to mention it’d make us stronger in other countries. We could have many benefits with these countries, and the more allies we have, the better, right? We certainly could use two or three more.”
Wren gave her a wide smile “I agree with her. Many often look down on these countries, but the other things they have to offer could be truly useful to us, and we could learn a thing or two about them. And a certain percentage of immigrants are from said countries, are they not?”
Madeleine quickly typed on her computer and nodded “Indeed. Over 70% of our immigrants are from those countries.”
As the adults debated on which countries to visit, Hana mouthed her pride to her daughter. Steph smiled.
Hana beamed at the memory. Diplomatic relations changed for the better since then. She took her daughter’s hands in her own and squeezed it “See? You’re not who you are on a whim, my darling. You’re here because you’ve earned it. You’ve proven time again and again that Liam made the right choice, biased or not. You deserve the throne, and everybody else thinks it the same!”
“Indeed,” finished Eclipsa, who had been listening for a while “A strong queen is just what this country needs.”
The three women hugged in a family sandwich. If she had any doubts of deserving the throne, she did not anymore.
It hadn’t been easy for Hana, raised in pressure to be perfect in everything, to raise a future queen, but watching the fruits of years of therapy, honest talks at three in the morning with her wife and encouraging herself that she was doing the right thing had now resulted in what she dreamt of many times: a woman who could speak for herself, unafraid of who she truly was and true to herself and proud of who she was. Everything it took her more than twenty-four years to become.
And having found her people and a great supportive network had helped not only Missmiss, but Hana as well, counting of course with her incredible wife.
And when Stephanie knelt before King Liam as he invested her Crown Princess of Cordonia, she could breathe in peace knowing that years of work had proved worth the tears and suffering of her youth, for raising Stephanie had helped her with herself and the people around her, and the old Hana would be proud and amazed by this new Hana.
And that brought her the greatest feeling of accomplishment.

The Promise
(Liam and his daughter, Charlotte) in a Choices: The Royal Heir drabble
Thirty Kisses in Thirty Days Challenge with the prompt: An "I forgive you." Kiss
A/N I've written a few drabbles of Liam marrying Madeleine and having a daughter with her. Those stories have Charlotte grown and beginning to face the pressures of having to choose a suitor. For this drabble though, Charlotte is a little girl trying to adjust to having a father who can't be there whenever she wants.
Rating G: for family fluff

Masterlist
"Here's another request from the King and Queen of Auvernal, your majesty."
Liam glanced at the documents with forced interest. With Madeleine out of the country visiting many of their allies, he was left to deal with the day to day operations of being King of Cordonia. He'd had more than the usual needs brought to his attention and without his capable queen here to divide the work, he was on his own bearing the full weight of the crown.
"Just set them over there, Galani." He gestured over to a nearby table.
His secretary did as requested. He then cleared his throat to get his king's attention again.
Liam quirked an eyebrow in question.
"You have someone wishing to speak with you, sir."
"Ask them to make an appointment." Liam pointed at his cluttered desk. "I don't have time today to see anyone."
"It's Princess Charlotte, sir."
Liam slumped back in his chair. Other than seeing her at breakfast and tucking her into bed at night, he'd been too busy to spend special time with his daughter. He knew that her visit to his study in the middle of the morning meant that he'd been neglecting her.
"Send her in."
Galani smiled as he opened the door.
Liam felt his spirits lift the moment he saw his seven year old. Charlotte's shy smile was directed first at his secretary bowing to her and then at him.
He got up and came around his desk to crouch down before her.
"How's my princess?" He asked.
"Good." She kept her hands behind her back. "I have a surprise for you."
"You do?" Liam found himself smiling for the first time today. "That is very thoughtful of you."
Charlotte produced a picture she'd drawn.
"My goodness!" Liam pretended to be astounded. "Where did you buy this work of art?"
His daughter giggled. "I didn't buy it, Father!'
"You didn't?" He leaned closer, eyes darting around the room, before whispering, "did you steal it from a museum?"
Her giggles grew louder as she shook her head.
"Then where on earth did you acquire this?"
"I made it!" She announced.
"No!" He gasped. "I knew you were talented, but I had no idea you were at this level."
Charlotte beamed at him. She stepped closer and pointed out the two figures in her drawing.
"That's you and that's me." She told him.
"A perfect likeness." Liam wrapped his arm around her, squeezing her in a side hug. "I see we are at the beach."
"On one of our special walks." She added. "See! There's the pink shells we always try to find."
Charlotte looked at him with a hopeful expression on her little face. "Could we go there today?"
Liam's smile slowly fell. "I'm sorry, dearest, but I'm very busy today."
"Oh."
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
Liam couldn't stand to see her unhappy. Scooping her in his arms, he hugged her close.
"We'll make time for a walk another day."
"Yes sir." She mumbled with a sniff.
He pressed a kiss to the top of her head then set her down.
"One day soon, you'll be working in here with me and your mother." He told her, hoping that might make her smile again.
Charlotte merely nodded.
"Tell you what." He tried to cajole a smile from her. "How about I try and finish work early enough so that we can have dinner together this evening?"
She nodded, her face scrunched with trying not to cry.
Liam felt his spirits plummet once more.
"Dearest," he began, "we',ll--"
"Princess Charlotte!" Nanny Ferguson burst into the room. "Oh! Forgive me, your majesty. The princess and I were in the library earlier and she must have decided to come see you."
Charlotte colored some. "I'm sorry Nanny. I didn't mean to make you worry. I just didn't want to wait on giving Father his picture."
Her middle aged nanny chuckled warmly. "I understand, your highness."
She knelt down before the little girl. "I never could wait to see my father either when I was your age."
With his brow furrowed, Liam watched his daughter take her caretaker's hand and leave. He could remember all the times in his life where he wanted a moment of his father's attention, only to be told that the needs of Cordonia must come before his own.
Didn't I want to be a different man than my father was? Madeleine and I swore when we had Charlotte that we would not mimic our parents' neglectful ways. Am I doing the very thing I never wanted to do?
"Sir," Galani interrupted his thoughts. "The phone conference with Queen Amalas is ready to begin."
"Right." He glanced down at the colorful drawing in his hands. "Thank you, Galani."
********************
"Princess?" Nanny Ferguson called out. "Shall I have the staff prepare your lunch?"
Charlotte looked up from her dollhouse.
"Yes mam." She mumbled with a resigned sigh.
The crown princess missed her parents. Usually if one was busy, the other made certain to spend special time with her. Her mother had been gone for over a week and her father hadn't been able to get away from his duty.
Her nose wrinkled over that word. She still wasn't quite certain what their duty to Cordonia was. She only knew that whatever it was, it kept her from time alone with her parents.
"I hope I'm not interrupting."
Charlotte looked up in surprise to see her father poking his head into the nursery.
"Not at all, your majesty." Nanny reassured him. "The princess and I were just discussing having lunch sent up."
"I see." Liam stepped inside. He winked over at his daughter. "Nanny, might I steal Charlotte away." He cleared his throat. "It's for Crown business."
"Yes, of course." She responded. "I shall have her ready after lunch."
"I'm afraid time is of the essence." He stalked over and picked Charlotte up. "We must depart immediately."
"But, your majesty, when will--"
"No time!" He said, hurrying out the door. "I'll have her back in time for dinner."
Liam slipped through a hidden panel further down the hall which hid a staircase, set Charlotte down, and took her hand.
"Where are we going?" She whispered, knowing this stairwell was only meant to be used in emergencies.
"To the beach." He whispered back. "I escaped my duties and decided to take you with me."
"We're going to the beach?!" She covered her mouth after her excited outburst.
Liam chuckled. "We are. Your drawing made me want to spend some time there with you."
Charlotte threw her arms around his waist and hugged him tight.
Taking her hand, he led her down the stairs and out to a waiting car.
****************
"We get to have a picnic too?" Charlotte's eyes widened at the large basket Bastien handed Liam.
"Of course." He smiled down at her. "You didn't think I would forget to bring all our favorite treats for our outing did you?"
"No sir." She replied taking his hand once more.
"Enjoy yourselves." Bastien called out.
"We will!" Charlotte replied.
Liam set up their picnic then gestured for Charlotte to dig through the basket for them.
"Father!" She gasped. "There's no sandwiches!"
"There's not?" He leaned over to peek into it. "That's odd. I could've sworn I packed some."
Charlotte giggled as he grumbled about his memory failing him once more.
"I guess then we are stuck with nothing but treats to eat." He pulled out pieces of vanilla cake. "We'll try and find something more sandwich like on the way back."
She settled next to his side and took a dainty bite. Her eyes closed over the sweet taste of the vanilla frosting.
"Good?" He asked, taking a bite of his own.
"Ummhmm." She said while swallowing a mouthful of cake. "Vanilla is my favorite!"
"Mine too." He added.
"This is the best lunch ever."
Liam smiled at her. "Because of the cake?"
She shook her head. "Because it's me and you at the beach."
"Ah, so it's the location that makes it the best."
"Not that!" She giggled. "Nanny brought me here a few days ago and it wasn't the best."
"No? And why wasn't it?"
"Because you were too busy to come along." She told him.
Liam wrapped his arm around her and set his plate down.
"Dearest," he said softly. "I'm sorry I've been so busy recently."
"You're king." She reminded him. "Mother said that there will be times you can't be with me because of your duty."
"That's true." He hugged her close to his side. "But you are and will always be more important than my duty to Cordonia. Everything I do is for you. I know, as king, I should say it is for our country, but ultimately, you are the only one I'm thinking of with every decision I make."
Charlotte listened quietly.
"I want you to remember that every time it seems that I'm too busy. I also want you to know that it doesn't matter how many hours I work for the Crown, I will always find time for you."
He smoothed her blonde hair back behind her ear that had escaped her ponytail.
"Can you forgive me, princess?"
Charlotte stood up and placed a kiss on Liam's forehead.
He realized she was mimicking his actions whenever she was sad or hurt.
"I forgive you." She said in her sweet, little voice.
Charlotte sat back down to finish eating her cake.
Liam pulled out some more vanilla goodies along with a dish of fruit. He felt more relaxed in this moment than he had all week.
"After we finish, why don't we see if we can find a pretty shell to add to your collection?"
"And one to surprise Mother with?" She added.
"Of course."
Liam smiled over seeing the return of her sunny personality. He didn't want to miss out on anymore special moments with her. She was already growing into a little lady. Her manners and the way she spoke showed how fast the years were slipping away from him. He couldn't let there come a day where the only memories he was left with were those of regret.
No matter what was demanded of his time, he would do all he could to never make Charlotte sad again.

@hydrvs || Forever drabbling away.
Never, in the entire expanse of the poets short life thus far, had he dared to break into a full sprint 'pon icy covered grounds. That day, however, did he do precisely that.
Having been out in the highlands close to the Steps of Faith just to walk his Chocobo, Cyvel walked silently alongside his companion, the trailing of his fingers against the war birds soft feathers a true comfort. He'd not have strayed as far as he had without Auvern there - he'd never have felt safe enough.
Eyes had turned to the long and worn path towards Camp Dragonhead out of idle curiosity to gaze around - only to pause entirely in his motions to stare. From the distance in which he was stood, it appeared as if there was simply a dark clad figure wandering toward the city... But after a moment longer of staring did the poet solidify his recognition, heart leaping into his throat.
Booted feet began to move quickly over snow, and then unto ice until he had broke out into a full sprint - something he'd not done at all since he last beat his dear brother in a race as children - his dear Chocobo Swift 'pon his heels.
He almost slips twice, but continues at his truly immense pace, until he gets close enough to dart up a small pile of rubble that allowed him the extra height needed to more easily throw arms around shoulders and hold on tightly.
The hold in which he grips Serpos is one that speaks far more words than the poet could ever hope to muster for himself: of how he had longed for him, how he had missed him to the very point of agony, how he had prayed for his safe return and relief of his presence. Too many nights now had Cyvel attempted to sleep while his mind was full of the other, and too many nights had been stolen from both worry and woe in turn.
"--praise Halone, you're safe--" Does he finally breathe, though his lithe strength is yet to let up. "--and you're here." The white Chocobo finally catches up, sounds it's dismay with Cyvel's little sprint rather loudly but makes no further approach on the two. Serpos' scent is familiar to him, he's found it on Cyvel's clothes before - though they've not met in person, the Garlean is not considered a stranger by the avian. Thus no attack is made.
When the poet finally convinces himself to let go, he does so only to take both of Serpos' gloved hands into his own and smiles, through tears of joy:
"I would love to hear of your adventures." He's tried to imagine just what they may be for night after night, after all - allowing his sleepless mind to wander to the farthest reaches of his own imagination and presumptions. He knows that all he has tried to fathom are likely very wrong, but it had offered him comfort when there had been none, and for that he was always thankful.
"-- but first, you must be weary. Let me book you a comfortable in room and warm you through? Perhaps then, if you are not too tired. "

Riley flew in on the afternoon plane, it was sunny Her saltbox house on the coast took her mind off Manhattan Prince was the heir to the apple kingdom, had money And the court said "How did a waitress from New York do it?" The wedding was charming, if dramatic With assassins up to their old tricks She got a duchy and called it "Valtoria" Their parties were tasteful, if a little loud Ignoring Anton's threats and staying proud It must have been her fault the king got crushed And they said "There goes the last great Cordonian dynasty" Who knows, if she never showed up what could've been There goes the maddest woman this country's ever seen She had a marvelous time ruining everything Riley gave up on all the snobby nobles, forever Moved the Cordonian Crew into her duchy Filled the pool with champagne so Drake couldn't drink it And blew through the money on the hats and the corgis And buying her friends cheesy outfits And they said "There goes the last great Cordonian dynasty" Who knows, if she never showed up, what could've been There goes the most shameless woman this country's ever seen She had a marvelous time ruining everything They say she was seen on occasion Pacing the rocks staring out at the midnight sea And in a feud with Auvernal She hacked their files to prove infidelity Fifty years is a long time Valtoria sat quietly on that beach Free of women with madness Beaumonts, Liv, and Hana, and then it was bought by me Who knows, if I never showed up what could've been There goes the loudest woman this country's ever seen I had a marvelous time ruining everything I had a marvelous time Ruining everything A marvelous time Ruining everything A marvelous time I had a marvelous time

Omg 😳, I didn’t see this ending at all. I know that it is for the best but it came so profoundly. I guess Liam’s world was not meant to include anyone not born into the life of nobility and its confines. Bred for the role of Queen and a life of duty in lieu of love. It isn’t a life of free will, but a life of duty with minimal flexibility.
Drake had warned that this agreement to a betrothal would cause Riley to hate Liam… She no longer had any display of love towards Liam, it was if he’d become her sworn enemy.
Riley’s words may very well have been spoken out of hormonal distress and anger, but they resonated with absolute truth and clarity. Love would never be enough. She couldn’t conform to his way of living even if she had chosen him… married him… even without the incident on his night of coronation. Love itself doesn’t make you compatible or happy. You can be so deeply rooted in love that you would make every sacrifice, but it doesn’t mean immediate and certain reciprocity.
The country had its heir, Liam had his duty, and Drake now had his family without any further worry that Liam would come between them. He would hold to their promise and keep the secret of having agreed to the alliance terms in the end. He would be there for Riley and their daughter always, and no doubt he would work with Liam however needed to end this dreadful situation with Auvernal.
Heir Apparent Chapter 22: So This is How We End
Series: Heir Apparent.
Fandom: The Royal Romance
Pairings: Drake x Riley, Liam x Riley (past)
Rating: MA
Warnings: Mature themes
Word Count: 1,223
A/N: So we finally come to the end after a mere two and half years! This series was such a learning experience for me. It was the first time I got wholesale attacked, and by multiple people, for my characters lacking "morality". 🤷🏻♀️
I strive to imbue my characters with real life emotions, flaws, mistakes, and reactions. This means they are often messy, sometimes toxic, but always realistic. Life is messy, humans are flawed and shit happens, then we deal with it.
I regret that I let the negativity derail me. I shut the story down and didn't pick it up again for well over a year and even then, the updates have been sporadic. I had to get to a place where I once again trusted the process, where I let the characters speak to me without the voices of my detractors in my head.
I think I've done that. I'm quite happy with this ending and I think I've stayed true to my characters, complete with their misperceptions, insecurities, and stubborn refusal to see the other side.
That said, stay tuned for an open ended spin-off series set in this universe. I have further ideas.....
Everything else: Master List.
The doctor from Auvernall delivered a healthy baby girl via c-section.
Riley spent the next three days in the hospital wing recovering. She was so wrapped up in her new baby that she didn’t question the lack of outside news sources in her room. There was no TV, and her cell phone was getting no signal.
Not that it mattered. All she wanted it for was to take candid photos of her new bundle of joy.
She was over the moon happy.
Crown Princess Eleanor Elizabeth Hana Olivia Rys was perfect. Ten little fingers, ten little toes, and no ill effects from the eclampsia outside of being born three weeks early.
Riley’s blood pressure stabilized by day three and as preparations were made for her to move back to the suite she shared with Drake in the royal wing, the men in her life realized they had to tell her about the treaty with Auvernall before she read about it online.
Liam had insisted on being the one to deliver the news. “I’m the one that made the call, after all.”
The conversation did not go well.
“I had no choice! My hand was forced!”
“Without consulting me? Without even talking to me first?”
He looked at her incredulously, “You were unconscious! You were about to die! I did what I had to do to save your life and hers!”
Tears of outrage and betrayal slid down her cheeks. “You promised me, Liam! You fucking promised!”
“I know, Riley. But things changed—"
“She’s a baby, Liam! She shouldn’t already have her life mapped out for her! What about love? She should be allowed to marry for love!”
Liam rubbed his eyes as defeat and frustration swirled through him. “You keep trying to apply rules for commoners to the monarchy.”
“Why should the rules for the monarchy be any different Liam?”
“Because they are Riley! You may not like it, it may not be pretty, but that's the way it is!”
She glared at him. “Then I’m glad you and I didn’t work out and I’m sorry you’re Eleanor’s father and not Drake! He would have never allowed this!”
Liam reacted as though he had been physically struck. His body jerked back and his mouth fell open as he regarded her with stunned disbelief.
He wanted to believe she was only reacting out of anger. He wanted to believe that she was just being illogical and unreasonable because she was hormonal and had just gone through a trauma. But he was afraid this was deeper. He was afraid that this was a fundamental difference in world views. One that might not be reconcilable.
He stood and began to pace the floor. Did he regret that he’d had to affiance his unborn child to the Auvernesse heir? Yes. Did he regret that making that decision saved the life of both the woman he loved and his child? Not even a little.
It had been a Hobson’s Choice and he’d done what had to be done. As he had been trained to do. As he would always do. Just like he’d done on coronation night, another impossible choice that had protected her, yet one she would never forgive him for.
The realization that this was the way it would always be engulfed him like a tidal wave. He suddenly saw the future he had wanted with her the way it would have actually played out, with her always second guessing him on subjects she didn’t fully understand.
He stopped pacing and turned to her with the most painful decision he’d made yet. “I rescind my offer.”
“What offer?”
“I told you that if you ever changed your mind about adding a Cordonian arrangement to your marriage contract, I would always be here. I won't. If nothing else this has helped me see that I was right in the first place that I would never marry for love. As loath as I am to admit it, my father was right. I love you Riley and I always will. But affairs of the heart have no place when it comes to making decisions for the good of Cordonia.”
He needed someone by his side who understood how the monarchy worked, how diplomacy worked. Riley had been right when she told him they would have never made it as a couple. She was always going to end up resenting him for something. It was better to let her go and be happy with Drake than to hold on and make her hate him in the long run.
“The good of Cordonia? What about the good of our daughter, Liam?”
“I made the hard decisions that had to be made. It's very easy to Monday morning quarterback the situation, you don't know what we all went through watching you almost die. If you had died, Eleanor wouldn’t even be here. She would have died with you. Have you considered that?”
“You don’t know that for sure.”
Liam shook his head sadly. “I’m sorry you’re disappointed in me. There will be a full investigation into everything that happened that night. If there’s a way out of the agreement, I’ll find it.”
Dr. Russo had been found locked in a music room by an unknown person. Godfrey had ties to Auvernall. Though no one could have predicted the medical emergency ahead of time, there were ample questions that needed answers. If the Auvernese king and queen had taken advantage of the situation and sidelined their doctor, he would find out. Meanwhile, a contract signed under duress could be challenged in an international court.
He said none of that to Riley. He simply promised her to do what he could and then got out of her way so that her anger at him wouldn’t cause another spike in blood pressure.
He relayed the main points of the conversation to Drake.
“Why didn't you tell her?”
“Tell her what?”
“That at the end I agreed to it as well.”
“Why would I do that Drake? She needs you more than ever right now. She needs someone she can rely on, someone she can depend on, someone who understands her and the rules of the world she grew up in. That's you.”
“Sure. And I’ll always be there for her, you know that. But—"
“You fought me up till the very end. You only capitulated at the last second out of sheer terror for her life. And to be clear, I was going to do it anyway. With or without your approval.”
“But I still did capitulate.”
“And what good would telling her that do? Make her hate you too? Then she would have nobody to lean on. Let me be the bad guy so that she can have her husband to rely on. It's the only thing I can do for her now.”
Drake gave him a long, measuring look before slowly nodding his head, relief cascading through him. There was only a sliver of guilt as he agreed to be absolved of any responsibility in the decision. He understood Liam’s reasoning that, at least for the foreseeable future, it was more important for Riley to have someone to lean on, someone in her corner. And that was all he could do for her now, so that’s what he would do.

Hii 🥰
Okay so I’m super curious (as always) and I’d love to see some of your wip magic 💚
Confession time
Random gifs
Mixed signals
First impression
The Queen‘s Choice
Pieces of us
None but you
(Is there another Sophie and Ethan story sprinkled in there? 🤩)
Also your wip folder is fine. You should see mine 😂 I put it in a neat way but yeah…it’s chaos city 😅
😂 I'm glad I'm not the only one with a crazy folder 🤣 And sadly, no Ethan and Sophie WIP's. I need some more prompts for them 😉 just in case you have any handy.
Confession Time will hopefully be posted tonight or tomorrow. It's my last Thirty Kisses in Thirty Days prompt and it was a request for Thomas Hunt x OC with the prompt: kissing the friend you've been longing for.
A few Random Gifs that I save when they spark an idea for a drabble or series:
Mixed Signals is my first official, Open Heart series. I did a crack ship series a year or so ago of Ethan and TRR's Olivia. This time, no other Choices characters will intrude 😂 It begins shortly after the attack with my MC, Chris. In this AU, she isn't with Tobias and doesn't really know him that well. She'll end up trying to figure out who's the best for her: Ethan who won't fully commit, Bryce who won't really tell her how he feels about her, or Tobias who on the surface seems to be content with being friends with her.
First Impression: I was given this request for Thomas Hunt and my OC a while back 😬 They will be together and reminiscing about what their first impressions were of each other.
The Queen's Choice: I wrote a drabble a while back where Liam abdicated to be with the MC. Since Olivia is next in line to the throne, she is now Queen. But like Liam, she must get married. I was asked by @twinkleallnight to write this, and I realized it would need more than just a drabble or two to give justice to Olivia's story.
Pieces of Us might be my biggest crossover idea yet, LOL. I have it set in the early 1930's. War has happened between Cordonia and Auvernal. It will have characters from TRR, Perfect Match, Red Carpet Diaries, Crimes of Passion, and Open Heart. I want it to have so many story elements: drama, romance, humor, angst, mystery, ect 🤣 I'm not sure if it will ever fully come about, but I have so many scenarios in my mind for it along with numerous notes and such.
None But You is my RCD Regency AU series. This will be the second half of the completed series. There were a few more storylines I meant to explore in it, but my health had taken a rough turn during it and I finished it earlier than intended. The next few parts I have planned focus on the characters helping Chris Winters and Matt Rodriguez find their true loves. Now that Thomas Hunt and Ryan Summers have their ladies, it is only fitting that they see their friends also shackled in holy matrimony 😂
