Void Trip by Ryan O’Sullivan and illustrated by Plaid Klaus Series: Void Trip #1-5 Genre: Science Fiction | Graphic Novel Length: 144 pages Published on 5th June 2018 by Image Comics Purchase: Amazon | TBD Ryan O’Sullivan: Twitter | Goodreads Plaid Klaus: Twitter | Goodreads Digital Review Copy received from Edelweiss for review
Synopsis: From writer RYAN O’SULLIVAN (Turncoat, The Evil Within, Warhammer 40,000) and illustrator PLAID KLAUS (Turncoat) comes the story of Ana and Gabe, the last two humans left alive in the galaxy. They’re low on fuel, they’re low on food, and they’re low on psychedelic space froot, but they’re still determined to make it to the promised land: hippy-paradise super-planet Euphoria. This is the story of their journey, the friends and enemies they made along the way, and how the universe responded to those who dared to live freely within it.Collects issues 1 through 5.
Apparently I have no self control and decided to browse Edelweiss because I’ve never picked up anything from there and thought I would be safe.
I wasn’t.
I stumbled across the Image Comics section and found 2 that I was super interested in. This is the first.
I didn’t read the synopsis, as always I selected based on the art but I had to trust the cover.
Void Trip follows Ana (man I love her character design, attitude, and general aesthetic) and Gabe as they travel across the universe getting high whilst trying to reach the hippy paradise of Euphoria. Unfortunately they’re also being hunted.
As this story follows people getting high it really lends itself to a great exploration of art and colours. I really enjoyed how the use of drugs effects the scenes, colours, or characters face. It also makes for the narrative to be a little unreliable.
There is a section about Blue vs Red robot war that happens and I think this has some great lines. I enjoyed the short tale about how that war came to be, its
This is definitely a wild ride but it has comedic and deep times too. I gasped at the end because I was suprised at the way the story unfolded and how the method of the story being told really adds to why some elements of the story aren’t fully explained or expanded on.
It may only be 144 pages but I cared deeply for the characters and I’m sad there isn’t another volume. However, at least I’ve been introduced to a new author and illustrator.

Fearscape #2 by Ryan O’Sullivan, illustrated by Andrea Mutti, Vladimir Popov, and Deron Bennet Series: Fearscape #2 Genre: Horror | Graphic Novel Length: 27 pages Published on 7th November 2018 by Vault Comics Purchase: Purchase from your local comic store Ryan O’Sullivan: Website | Twitter | Goodreads Andrea Mutti: Website | Twitter Vladimir Popov: Twitter Deron Bennet: Website | Twitter eCopy received from author in exchange for an honest review
Synopsis: Heroic plagiarist Henry Henry faces his first trial in the Fearscape! Within The Weeping Castle, home to The Children of Prometheus, Henry Henry encounters wondrous and fanciful creatures—including The First Fear. With courage and calm, he endures the heart of darkness, refusing the easy temptation of light. No Legs can outrun—no Mind can outwit—no Heart can outlove our hero.
Whilst I was away last month Ryan O’Sullivan sent an early copy of the second volume of Fearscape my way to read and reivew for its release. Now I’m finally back on track with sleep and blogging I picked it up.
I’m really enjoyed the progression of this story but I can definitely see why I don’t read comics and do read graphic novels; they’re just too short. I need more. Now.
The Muse and Henry Henry travel further into the Fearscape and he meets and experiences some of the horrors within. The Fearscape is a beautiful place and its difficult to imagine how it could be filled with nightmares, but we get to experience some of Henry’s and I don’t think I’d want to be in his shoes with his truths and lies so clear to some of them.
I was really glad that we got to see some Sirens here because they’re some of my favourite creatures though I do wish they were explored a little more.
This volume is mostly about Henry facing some fears and figuring out how to get back to his world so that he can focus on what he wants – to become an author. But how far is he willing to go to achieve his dream?
The only way he can leave the Fearscape is to do something foolish, which it doesn’t appear he thinks much on. Or has any care for. So its definitely going to be interesting when he has to face the repurcussions of his actions, both from the Fearscape but also in real life as he’s not a great person.
I gave this 3.5 stars as whilst I did really enjoy it I wasn’t as took in as with volume 1 and I have no doubt the following volumes are going to live up to what I’m anticipating. (Additionally Henry’s vocabularly is very long winded which makes it hard to digest at times)
This volume is already out for sale so go pick it up from your local comic book store and join me on this nightmare-ish adventure and we can be glued to our seats as we wait to see what Henry Henry set loose into the mortal world.
Oh! It also has two covers, I think the white one would be the one I’d pick up.
