You literally can't see all the major landmarks in Australia in one week because they're all so far away from each other, that said, there are a lot fewer of them than there are historically significant sites in Italy or France. But while in Italy or France you can probably see more than one thing a day in order to see Uluru and the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the same trip you have to factor in (if you are FLYING between them) about a day's travel time (including faffing around at airports etc).

If you want to DRIVE to places in Australia it's way way worse (although there are pretty things to see along the way, no question). It's about a nine hour drive from Sydney to either Brisbane or Melbourne (the two next biggest cities) and it's two days drive to Perth. And while there are some towns on the way to Brisbane or Melbourne Australia is SPARSELY populated - you're going to be spending a lot of that drive in country that is under farmland with a small population centre a few kilometres off the highway.

If you're driving to Perth you're going to be spending MOST of your time on roads that don't even go through farmland. It's literally a flat plain of nothing. Europeans called it the Nullarbor Plain (latin for treeless) the Mirning clans and Yinyila people called it Oondiri - the waterless.

My family drove it when I was a kid (my grandparents lived in Perth and we didn't have enough money to fly). It's two days. Completely flat. Not featureless (there are bushes and things) but pretty dull after a while.

Any way been thinking a lot about how tourism just isn't viable in Australia unless you pick ONE city or ONE place to visit and just do that. I'm 47 and I've never been to Adelaide or Uluru or Darwin - it's on our list but we just haven't gotten to it yet.

I love it here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but we're so far away from everyone it gets lonely sometimes.
