You might have guessed (after all it’s in the title of the blog!) that I love all things Mac. You might also know, if you have been here before, that I am a photographer. Well, we photographers are mostly digital rather than film shooters, even though film (or analogue as some call it) is having something of a revival.

Be that as it may, digital means (not obligatory) that we need a way of enhancing our shots or at the very least convert them from RAW, unless we shoot only Jpegs. Now, over time there have been photo editors (software that is) that have come and gone. Even Apple killed off the much-loved Aperture (shame on you Apple). However, Adobe has been around almost from the very beginning of the digital revolution, with Adobe Photoshop it’s premier product, joined more recently by Lightroom. With Adobe moving it’s product line to the cloud in the shape of Adobe Creative Cloud and the subscription model, others have entered the market to provide alternatives that don’t require a monthly subscription. Transformations - Snow Day 2

(The 2nd in a series of eight art transformations created from one digital image file)

After selecting an image for transformation my workflow is to import the RAW digital negative  into Adobe Lightroom, where I apply a preset of  standard adjustments I've created before exporting  and converting the image file into a high resolution JPEG.  Can you tell the differences between this image and the  original?        As I apply the standard adjustments I'll make  additional corrections, as needed or desired, to  exposure, highlights, shadows, black point, clarity,  vibrancy, saturation and sharpening. This is done  to individual files and based on the intended usage of the  image and my personal preferences. This image is  the saved JPEG file after my Lightroom adjustments have  been made. Tomorrow I'll share this image after applying  custom adjustments in another software program I use  called Aurora HDR.

Skylum have just updated their Aurora HDR program, and I thought I would give it a spin.

Now, I decided to use some of my own images, and not the stock images.

Here goes. I gave it a spin using two sets of images – one for interior photography, and one for landscape.

Before I go on, let me get two things off the bat

What is HDR

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. When you are photographing the interior of a building, an architectural monument, a landscape etc., what you will notice, is that parts of the scene (the sky, for instance) is much brighter than other parts (the mountains, for instance). While our eyes adjust to the different levels of brightness, the same is not true for our cameras. Which is why certain parts of a scene may look over, or under-exposed.

The way to handle this, is to mount your camera on a tripod, and to take 3-5 photographs, each with a different exposure (normally, by keeping the aperture constant). These are then blended together in programs like Lightroom, Photoshop, Photomatix (which, has traditionally been the industry leader) or Aurora from Skylum.

I have used all, and in my view, Aurora stands out to be the best. The photographs are natural, if you wish, or grungy if you wish. They offer many presets, and in the current offer, many overlays as well.

The controls, with the sliders, are a dream to use. What is also beautiful, is that you can vary the opacity of a layer, and add another preset as a layer. the possibilities are boundless.

Aurora is now my default HDR engine.

So now, here are two examples that I have blended together. Bear in mind – I have not done any processing at all, in Photoshop. I wanted to show you how the photographs look right from Aurora. I would, in Photoshop, need to clean up the sofa, dust spots etc!

Interior

What you see above, is the set of 7 images that I combined into the program. The range of exposure between the outside scene and the inside.

I also wanted an image that was light, airy, and somewhat cheerful. So, I chose a preset that reflected this.

In the image above, what you see, is that the scene looks absolutely natural. It is quite stunning, in my view.

Landscape

And now, the final image

What is the beauty of this image?

It is actually, practically complete!

Second, the one thing that I would like to point out, that this photograph was taken at a rapidly flowing river. As you can not step into the same river twice, you cannot photograph the same river twice.

Yet the de-ghosting feature in Arora HDR is so good that you do not know that the different flow patterns of the river have been blended together. This is absolutely stunning.

The Screen Interface

In the two images below, you will see the screen interface. In the lower image, you see the screen with all panels collapsed (on the right).

As you will see, Aurora gives you an extremely powerful set of tools that allow you to edit the picture.

The film strip at the bottom represents the various presets, which have been categorised as Basic, Interior, Architecture, Landscape etc. Use the presets as a starting point with which you will then move on to the rest of your editing.

LG lancia il G7 ThinQ, con notch, doppia fotocamera con intelligenza artificiale e audio Boombox

Ne stava anticipando l'arrivo da diverso tempo ed aveva persino fatto una comparsa alla chetichella durante il Mobile World Congress 2018, senza alcun annuncio ufficiale. Che è arrivato oggi: il G7 ThinQ di LG si mostra senza veli, come nuova proposta di fascia alta dell'azienda coreana. Il dispositivo porta varie novità in dote, sia estetiche sia funzionali, e una di esse certamente spicca subito all'occhio.

Il notch ha infatti conquistato anche LG, che si aggiunge così alla numerosa schiera di produttori che l'hanno adottato. All'interno della barra sensori, come l'abbiamo ribattezzata in altre occasioni, troviamo la capsula auricolare, la fotocamera anteriore e, appunto, i principali sensori come prossimità e luce ambientale. Il notch può essere "nascosto" durante l'uso attraverso un'impostazione dedicata. Il resto della scocca frontale è pressoché interamente dedicata al generoso schermo da 6,1" con risoluzione QHD+ e supporto HDR10. Si tratta di un semplice LCD, ma LG ci ha lavorato parecchio, con la copertura al 100% dello spazio colore DCI-P3 e luminosità fino a 1.000 nit, valore raggiunto nelle condizioni più estreme. Sono disponibili inoltre diverse modalità d'uso al fine di adattarne la resa in svariati contesti. La costruzione prevede ampio uso del vetro, fatta eccezione per i bordi in metallo. Il G7 ThinQ ha la certificazione IP68, a cui si aggiungono i test di resistenza compiuti in accordo allo standard militare statunitense MIL-STD 810G.

Andando all'interno, troviamo un SoC octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, con GPU Adreno 630. La memoria RAM LPDDR4X presente ammonta a 4 GB, mentre 64 sono i GB destinati all'archiviazione UFS 2.1, senz'altro un buon quantitativo base che può essere espanso all'occorrenza tramite microSD. La connettività è completa grazie alla presenza di 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0 ed NFC. La sicurezza biometrica è affidata al sensore d'impronte digitali posto sul retro, con un posizionamento ottimale dal punto di vista ergonomico. È disponibile pure lo sblocco tramite riconoscimento del volto, ma risulta una modalità secondaria, complementare. Oltre ai consueti pulsanti fisici per accensione/sblocco/spegnimento e volume, è previsto un ulteriore tasto totalmente dedicato all'attivazione di Google Assistant.

Passando al comparto fotografico, troviamo due sensori da 16 Megapixel, entrambi con dimensione dei pixel di 1 µm. Le altre caratteristiche all'interno della coppia sono però differenti: il sensore principale dispone di apertura f/1,6, autofocus e stabilizzazione ottica, mentre quello secondario ha un'apertura f/1,9 e una lente super grandangolare da 107°. La registrazione video avviene in 4K HDR. Per quel che riguarda la fotocamera anteriore, si tratta di un'unità grandangolo da 8 Megapixel con focus fisso. Molte delle funzionalità a livello software sono analoghe a quelle introdotte di recente sulla serie V30 e non è un caso che pure qui sia stato ripreso il suffisso ThinQ, identificando tutto quanto è legato a stretto filo all'utilizzo dell'intelligenza artificiale. Rispetto all'altra serie, però, il G7 può contare su ben 19 preset a disposizione invece di 8 e vengono fornite modalità aggiuntive per la gestione del colore in fase di scatto, adattate al contesto. Super Bright Mode si occupa di migliorare la resa delle foto in condizioni di scarsa luce ambientale combinando virtualmente tra loro i pixel della fotocamera principale. Non mancano, infine, le opzioni che stanno già spopolando su vari top di gamma come le Live Photo, l'aggiunta di oggetti in realtà aumentata e l'effetto bokeh.

Un altro aspetto su cui LG punta molto per il suo G7 ThinQ è l'audio. Lo speaker stereo principale Boombox è in grado infatti di sfruttare l'interno dello smartphone come una sorta di woofer esaltando così, soprattutto quando collocato su superfici piane, le frequenze basse che sono un punto dolente di quasi tutti i telefoni. L'attenzione per il sonoro è dimostrata anche dal quad DAC 32-bit/192 kHz integrato, con supporto alla tecnologia surround DTS:X 7.1.
