I love your writing style and I'm curious on how your longer fanfic writing process works. I know you've said that you write out a rough copy before cleaning them up chapter by chapter then publish. For a long fic how long does the rough copy usually take to write out?

I'm just trying to set up realistic times goals for myself.

it honestly depends.

the longest single work i’ve ever written to date is ecstasy (125k words), and it took 7 weeks to finish the first draft. this is NOT sustainable and i do not recommend setting this as a writing goal. I wrote for hours every single day for about a month and a half, then spent another 5 weeks editing before setting it aside to write the prequel (which i put on hiatus to write ETL). i wrote the first 44k words in a week where i was writing for 16 hours a day and sleeping 3-5 hours a day. DON’T DO THIS lmao. the only reason this was possible was because i was on winter break and just started having a manic episode. i wasn’t eating or sleeping or focusing on real life responsibilities, just writing fanfic.

ETL took so much longer, from a relative standpoint. it’s only around 28k and took a month to write. i was still writing daily when i worked on it, but this time i had a little more work/life balance. WTSAU is a weird one because i wrote the majority of it (probably around 40k) between june and august of last year, but i’ve put it aside several times to work on other projects and come back to it again and again. for me the writing portion and the revision portion can happen simultaneously because i like to jump around and work on different parts all the time, or switch off and work on another fanfic for a while.

in september i wrote the entirety of my long mpreg fic (around 30k). it was totally complete by all standards, but i decided to go back and add another 20k words and change the story--and i’m still actively working on it! i’ve started several other fics since then but i still come back to it, so the ammount of time it’s taken to write from start to finish is totally unclear. you could say it’s taken 9 months (lol) since i started it that long ago, but most days i don’t even touch it. 

so there’s really no formula for how long a fanfic takes. it mostly depends on how busy i am and how much time i can sink into it. right now i’m swamped with work, and have been for months. i’ve hardly gotten to write anything at all! so i could have set some time goals saying i’ll have x number of words by this date, but life gets in the way. i personally don’t set writing goals for myself because i know it will only put stress on me in the long run. if anything, i try to write a little each day, even if i don’t feel like it, but i forgive myself when life comes first.

Come What May

Okay... so this is Part One of my A/B/O fic. This will be a multi-chapter fic and probably a slow burn one as well. I’ve been spending way too much time on world building for this fic that will probably never see the light of day. This fic will also have strong ties to Sentinel and Guides... a trope that I don’t read much of in the marvel fandom.

PART ONE

He dreams of wings.

Enormous wings made of the softest feathers in the world.

Feathers of burnt shades of red and gold that gleam in the dying light of day.

He can hear the rustle of the feathers as the wind flows through, playfully tempting the wings to spread in flight.

Instead the wings curl around his body, creating a soft and dark cocoon of safety... of protection... of love... matched by the strength in two arms that encircle his chest.

He can smell a masculine musk, tinged with a slightly metallic scent and a hint of engine oil. A combination of smells that run straight through to his gut, leaving it tense in sudden arousal.

As he allows his dream body to relax in the hold of his mysterious winged companion, he hears a dark, rich voice speaking to him.

“Awaken, precious one.”

He knows this voice belongs to his unknown companion. It’s asking... no... commanding his obedience. Leaving no question of this expectation and yet the tone also hints at rewards if it’s obeyed.

“I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”

He can hear the loneliness and the longing in the voice. It dampens the arousal and replaces it with an ache in his heart. A sudden need to curl up in the speaker’s arms and provide comfort pours through his veins, while at the same time protecting and preventing future hurts from occurring.

“Come to me, my Sentinel.”

He wakes up.

Peter abruptly sits up in his bed, curls clinging to the sweat on his forehead. His right hand automatically reaches up to clutch at his t-shirt, right over his pounding heart. He takes a few breaths, trying to calm his heart, before he scrambles from his confining sheets and hop-steps over to his window.

Peter lifts the window dash, letting the muggy August air into his room. As he stares into the waning night, he thinks back on the dream. He wonders if it was actually a dream... or if it was a Calling? Even now, some of the details were fading, but he remembers the words the unknown voice said.

The voice called him Sentinel.

That was impossible though. Although the time frame was valid, as the majority of Sentinels start to come online with their senses around the age of 18. Peter’s 18th birthday was in a matter of days, so if he was a Sentinel, it would make sense that a Guide would be trying to connect to him through a Calling. A Sentinel needs a Guide to help them through the sensory overloads and to prevent the potential zone outs.

However, Peter can’t be a Sentinel.

Peter is an Omega.

His secondary gender, identified at birth when he was scented by his Alpha sire, makes the possibility of him emerging online as a Sentinel unrealistic. It was well established through medical studies and journals that Alphas came online as Sentinels and Omegas came online as Guides. No deviations, no anomalies, no exceptions. Surely if there were any, the Centers would mention them during the classes they held for Alphas and Omegas.

Peter felt a little uneasy as he thought about the Centers. Information and training hubs found in every major city in the world, Centers were commanded by a Prime Alpha Sentinel and Omega Guide pairing. The Centers kept tight lids on all established Alphas and Omegas, ensuring that the territories’ census was kept up to date. Centers retained trainers to inform Alphas and Omegas of their future roles and what to expect when they came online as Sentinels and Guides. They provided training for newly bonded pairs, as well as kept lineage records.

Only Alphas and Omegas could produce more Alphas and Omegas. In the world, with the majority of the population classified as Betas, each territory was fiercely protective of their Alphas and Omegas. Centers were responsible for holding quarterly socials, where Alphas and Omegas could meet and hopefully form attachments before emerging online.

Peter hates his local Center. Although Sentinels usually came online at age 18, Guides emerged at age 16. Ever since Peter had failed to come online as a Guide at 16, the local Prime Omega had him come to the Center once a month for testing. Yes, Peter wants to know what’s wrong with him biologically speaking, but he doesn’t appreciate being treated like a freak. He also doesn’t like the look in Prime Omega Rumlow’s eyes every month he sees him.

He can only imagine what Rumlow would have to say if he asked if he could possibly be an Omega Sentinel.

No such thing, right?

Peter would ask his Aunt May, but she would be lawfully obligated to let the Center know, considering she worked for one as a nurse. Anything having to do with Alphas and Omegas had to be reported immediately.

Peter shakes his head and steps away from his window. Glancing at his clock, he notes that it is about time to get up anyway. He has to be at the New York City Center early this morning.

Maybe he can talk to MJ or Ned today about his dream. His two best friends would keep their talks secret.

His mood brightening at the thought, Peter makes his way to his bathroom for a morning shower.

He dreams of webs.

Not of disgustingly sticky monster webs one would find in abandoned houses or Halloween haunted houses.

No, these webs are made of gossamer threads weaved into intricate designs that sparkle with dew in early morning light.

These webs do not inspire fear in the dreamer, but rather awe and wonder.

Standing alone in his dream, he smells the scents of peaches and honeysuckle. The webs seem to be vibrating, almost dancing to an unknown rhythm. If he had to guess, the rhythm almost resembles a rapid heartbeat.

“Guide,” called out a disembodied voice. The tone was odd, as if the owner was too old to be a child, but too young to be an adult.

The dreamer tried to identify the owner of the voice, but he was alone, save for the webs.

“Find me. Help me.”

The dreamer woke up.

Tony looked up at his bedroom’s ceiling as the few details of his dream were reviewed by his mind. His eyes closed in relief even as tears slowly fell down his cheeks onto the pillow beneath his head.

‘At last,’ he thought. ‘At last.’
