Parasol Protectorate fantasy cast
The cast I would want if I could pick actors from any time period. So imagine them cast at the right age for the role. Brits only, naturally.
Alexia: Minnie Driver
Conall: Gerard Butler
Ivy: Kate Winslet
Akeldama: Tom Hiddleston
Lyall: Jude Law
Genevieve: Audrey Tatou
Biffy: Henry Cavill
Nadasdy: Helena Bonham Carter
Tunstell: Domhnall Gleeson
Ambrose: Alan Rickman
Floote: Paul Bettany
Channing: Charlie Hunnam
Felicity: Keira Knightly
Sidheag: Dawn Steele
Evy: Sienna Miller
Angelique: Emmanuelle Béart
Dr. Caedes: Jeremy Irons
Mabel Dair: Jessica Brown Findlay
Haverbink: Jason Statham
Boots: Robert Pattinson
Letitia Loontwill: Julie Walters
Squire Loontwill: Patrick Stewart
*I might have left someone important off the list
Some of these are obvious, hands down, no subs, disagree-and-I’ll-fight-you choices. But some are just me wanting to see that person in that role because entertainment.
This cast only applies to the original Alexia books, not any of the spin-off series.

Golden Scozzie performances at US Silver Nationals – Reportage from Coach Chris!
Long story short from our Scozzie Director
28 Scozzies qualified, 9 quarter finalists, 8 semi finalists, 4 finalists – a million smiles!
Congratulations to everyone who competed. The standard of junior squash has never been higher! It was no small achievement for players to make the draw and all our entrants should be proud of their seasons.
Easy to overlook would be Scozzies two Most Improved Player Awards, with Caroline and Nikhil carrying on what is now a Scozzie tradition. Our program has a deserved reputation for fast tracking talented youngsters at Gold, Silver and Bronze levels and the MIP’s should be exceptionally proud of their hard work.
Finally two heart felt thank you’s from me personally.
Firstly, thank you to all the Scozzies who had their training disrupted for three days without complaint and for their support of their training buddies in action. I believe hosting the event was the right thing to do to assist the US Squash Community and one weekend of disruption, although not ideal, was a good call.
Secondly I’d like to recognize the contribution of the coaches and staff at the club who worked tirelessly before, during and after the event to make things run as smoothly as possible and to make sure all our players had the positive and successful experience they deserved. Thank you to all the staff and congratulations to the coaches who once again proved that they are the finest crew of squash coaches ever assembled in the US. Bigger things ahead! – Paul
Now the details from Coach Chris:
The 2017 Silver Nationals was conducted at the home of Scozzie! Our 14 court facility was taken over by US Squash this past weekend as we saw 10 draws all full come from across the country for the chance to gain a National Title!
Scozzies charge on the Nationals saw a ground breaking 9 quarter finalists being converted into a record breaking 8 semi final spots and four finalists!
In the GU11, Miss Elsa Holleran started more Holleran history by following in her mothers footstep as she made her way through to her first national final. Nearly out of the tournament in the quarters Elsa played an amazing 5 setter match to get through to the semis to then be awarded a default match from the No 1 seed due to injury. Up in the final, Elsa had mother Demer Holleran who is Americas most prestigious and winningest squash player of all time in her corner. Elsa played a great match in the GU11 final, covering the court beautifully and working hard to find her corners. Her opponent who had come from the middle of the draw also played great squash and managed to get the 3-0 win and take the title. Elsa claimed 2nd place in her first ever national championships after only playing the sport for a few months. Plenty more to come from this budding young super star!
In the GU13, Naomi was another Scozzie to upset the draws and defy her seeding. Coming off the back of some solid training with coach Sam she charged through to the semis only dropping one game. In the semis of the GU13 she played the #2 seed. 2-0 down and with the pressure on, coach Lyall switched up their game plan and Naomi focused in on what she had to do. Coming from behind Naomi played flawless squash to win 3-2 and book herself into the finals. Naomi’s opponent for the title was the No1 seed who was in great form. Naomi played very mature squash for what looked more like a GU15 final than GU13’s but her opponent prevailed taking the match in 3. Naomi played an outstanding tournament and getting 2nd place was an unbelievable achievement!
Turning our attention to the BU15, Scozzie had some great performances from a contingent of players. Morgan Shatzman had a tough draw coming into the BU15. He played great squash throughout the rounds until he found himself in the plate final. Up against an opponent who moved around the court with ease, Morgan struggled to find a way to finish the points. This proved for entertaining squash as Morgan went for some outrageous winners. The high risk, high reward tactics saw Morgan lose out on the win with a 3-1 defeat.
Nikhil played elegant squash throughout the BU15 rounds to find himself in the semis. His semi final opponent was a strong competitor. Losing the first game, Nikhil regrouped with coach Navin and pulled out a great change of tactics to take the lead 2-1. After taking the lead, Nikhils opponent was not just going to roll over just yet. An increase in tempo and shot hitting saw Kyle Broadhurst come from 2-1 down to Beat Nikhil in 5 and move Nikhil into the 3/4 play offs. Up against the No1 seed who had been beaten by Sameer in the other semi final, Nikhil was determined and focused. He played a very attacking match, volleying consistently and forcing his opponent to make errors. Nikhil took the match 3-1 and grabbed the 3rd spot in the BU15.
Sameer Saxena hit some solid form coming into silver nationals. Ranked 3/4 Sameer knocked out the No1 seed in the semis to book himself a place In his first national final. Sameer was up against the No2 seed in the final but with a great mindset and full of confidence after his win over the No1 seed he played an impressive match to get the win and therefore the title in 4 nail biting games.
The GU17 had our most Scozzies fighting for the title. This included Dhivya, Lauren, Nina, Alexis Dhivya, Margo, Caroline and Zoe .
Dhivya was in good form after winning the Baltimore silver the previous week. This showed in her first match as she defied her seeding by knocking out a higher seed player in her first round match! Dhivya had a great tournament throughout the silvers allowing all her hard work over the past few months to shine through. Her run came to an end when she met fellow Scozzie player Nina in the semis of the consol draw.
Nina came across fellow Scozzie player and fellow school mate Dhivya in the semi finals of the consolation draw. Dhivya started strong by dominating the volley but once a consistent Nina difussed her volley she managed to win the match 3-1 and move into the final. Ninas positive length hitting and attacking volleying saw her put together a great game plan in her final. Solid lines to the back of the court and high tempo hitting from the Conestoga No1 gave Nina the 3-1 win and took the GU17 consolation title.
Alexis Shatzman came into silver nationals as the No1 seed and she really played like that. She fought from 2-1 down after a quick change of game plan against fellow Scozzie team mate Lauren Weil to win 11/9 in the 5th booking a place into the final. The final match and chance for a National title was against a solid opponent from Ohio. The No2 seed, Audrey Berling hadn’t dropped a single game on her way to the final and unfortunately for Alexis it would be the same in the final. Alexis played aggressive squash and tried throwing every playbook at her but lost 3-0 in the final of the GU17 claiming the 2nd spot. A great tournament from Miss Shatzman who still has another year to grab that title in the GU17.
In the 3/4th play off of the GU17, we had Lauren Weil who had just missed out on a place in the final through playing one of the best matches of the tournament. A match that was probably more fitting for a final. After a physically tough semi, Lauren stepped her game up once again and got her 3/4 play off opponent moving from corner to corner. Lauren took the match 3-0 and grabbed the 3rd position of the GU17 with elegance and ease.
Entering the BU17 draw, Scozzie had two strong players competing for the title.
Zach Bradlow came across the eventual winner of the BU17 in the quarters. After a solid performance he went down 3-1. Zach then put an exceptional display of squash together for the rest of the tournament to go straight through the classic plate, winning his final match 3-1 to claim the plate trophy. Teddy Ells came into the silver nationals with pressure on his shoulders. Holding the No1 spot and looking to capitalize on his recent good form he was looking sharp in the first few rounds, dispelling any challengers easily. Through to the semis, Teddy came across a strong and disciplined opponent. Teddy did a great job to hold off the attack but lost out in an epic 3-2 battle. Refreshed and refocused after Saturday’s result, Teddy was a new man for Sunday’s 3/4 playoff. This showed in his first few rallies where his solid movement made it hard for his opponent to find any weaknesses in his game. Teddy took the 3rd place position with a great performance!
On a final note, Scozzie had two players awarded the William T Ketcham Most Improved Player Trophies for their respective age groups. Caroline Glaser moved a remarkable 53 places up the GU17 rankings during the season, and Nikhil an even more emphatic 122 places in the BU15. Congratulations on some spectacular improvement to the players and their coaches – Gold Nationals beckon for next season!
Overall it was an unbelievable weekend of squash with all players, parents and coaches making Scozzie proud and really showing how hard work does pay off. Well done team!
