Man who imported 14kg of meth connected to Comancheros jailed for seven years

A drug dealer who imported 14kg of methamphetamine for the Comancheros in New Zealand has been jailed.

Samuel Vaisevuraki was arrested in February 2019, in the first phase of Operation Nova, before Comanchero president Pasilika Naufahu and associates were arrested in April 2019.

On Thursday, Vaisevuraki was sentenced to seven years by Judge Nevin Dawson for his “significant” part in the “sophisticated" operation.

The 42-year-old previously admitted four charges of importing methamphetamine, supplying the Class A drug and also two charges of conspiring to deal the drug. In total 14 kg of methamphetamine was involved.

Vaisevuraki, had not been named publicly before, but his name was mentioned countless times during Naufahu’s trial in September 2020. The court heard in 2018 Vaisevuraki was living in Sydney when he was approached after his family were threatened over a family member's debts.

Methamphetamine was then imported into New Zealand in kitchen appliances from the United States.

Defence lawyer Dale Dufty said Vaisevuraki now accepted he was involved in the offending, which began out of motivation to pay off debt, make money and also fuel his own drug addiction.

Dufty said his client had a “terrible” upbringing and since been in prison had attempted to distance himself from gangs.

However, Dufty submitted, it was Vaisevuraki’s family member who was the central architect in the offending.

Crown prosecutor James Herring said Vaisevuraki played a “significant” role in the importation and was a primary distributor, receiving money from stakeholders both in New Zealand and overseas.

Judge Dawson said this was sophisticated offending in a commercial enterprise for the criminal organisation.

The judge accepted the man had been “greatly misled” by his family member and found a causative link between Vaisevuraki's background and the offending.

Judge Dawson said Vaisevuraki, having left gangs and motivated to address the drug addiction, had displayed insight into his offending and hoped once released he could have a good life.

Operation Nova

In early 2018 police from the National Organised Crime Group began an investigation and identified a joint criminal enterprise importing methamphetamine into New Zealand involving members of the Comancheros and associates.

Drugs were imported into the country through catering appliances, sent from United States-based restaurant equipment supplies to various addresses in New Zealand.

These appliances were packed with methamphetamine.

Tallat Rahman and his son Joshua sourced the drug and arranged for its delivery to New Zealand.

Vaisevuraki was one of the men on the ground to receive, distribute and receive cash for distribution to various stakeholders both internationally and domestically, court documents said.

Discussions were had with other defendants about how Vaisevuraki could sell 5kg of meth weekly.

During the Naufahu trial, hours of intercepted communications were played to the jury, much of which involved Vaisevuraki.

On September 20, 2018, an audio device was fitted in Vaisevuraki’s vehicle after he had arrived into Auckland from Sydney days earlier.

In the recording, Vaisevuraki can be heard getting frustrated with He Sha – a hairdresser from Sydney – talking about a “deal” that he can make nearly half a million dollars from.

“This is the biggest gang in New Zealand, if they put word on the street about you, no-one comes near you.”

Vaisevuraki goes on to tell Sha about the “richest man in the country” who has a billion dollars.

This deal never eventuated.

The day before, Vaisevuraki was observed leaving a Karaka address in a ute.

Officers then observed the ute park up in Howick next to a white Range Rover. Shortly after Vaisevuraki and Naufahu were seen by police sitting in the Howick Village Cafe.

Comanchero gang raids: President's brother pleads guilty

A senior Comanchero gang member has admitted charges of money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group, just weeks before his trial was due to start.

Vetekina Naufahu pleaded guilty to three charges at a High Court hearing this morning, held by audio-visual link because of the Covid-19 lockdown in Auckland.

The money laundering charge relates to his late-model Range Rover, worth around $150,000, while the organised crime charge carries the most significant penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Naufahu - whose brother Pasilika is the president of the New Zealand chapter of the Australian motorcycle gang - also pleaded guilty to possession of MDMA, or Ecstasy, which is a Class-B controlled drug.

Justice Sally Fitzgerald convicted Naufahu of the three offences and scheduled a sentencing date of October 23, 2020, alongside his fellow Comanchero Jarome Fonua.

Last week, the gang's treasurer Fonua also pleaded guilty to money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group.

The late admissions come shortly before the pair were due to stand trial at the High Court in September, along with other members of the gang and their associates on charges laid in April 2019 following Operation Nova.

Vetekina and Fonua now join Tyson Daniels, the gang's vice-president, and Auckland lawyer Andrew Simpson in being convicted of laundering criminal profits.

Nearly $1.3 million in cash was deposited into the lawyer's trust account, which was then used to purchase expensive cars and property.

For Daniels alone, there were four Range Rovers - with price tags of $175,000, $255,000, $218,000 and $280,000 - a $200,000 Mercedes-Benz, a Lamborghini for $285,000, and two Rolls-Royces, which cost $364,000 and $595,000.

A charge of participating in an organised criminal group between May 2017 and April 2019 was also admitted by Daniels, who was living in the affluent Auckland suburb of Mellons Bay until his arrest in April last year.

In sentencing Daniels - who was wearing a Versace top in Comanchero colours of black and gold - to four years and eight months in prison, Justice Gerard van Bohemen said the senior gang member played a crucial role overseeing the gang's operations for significant personal gain.

The offending was sophisticated, said Justice van Bohemen, with encrypted devices used to avoid detection by police.

Money was deposited at banks in amounts less than $10,000, in a bid to avoid triggering the banks' reporting threshold, then funnelled through trust and company accounts to disguise their criminal origins.

"You clearly knew the money was derived from significant importation of drugs."

More than $1.2m in cash was deposited into Simpson's trust account at his law practice, which was also used to purchase some of the cars belonging to Daniels and allegedly others in the gang, as well as real estate such as a $1.3m home in Auckland.

Justice van Bohemen said Simpson was the facilitator of the money-laundering scheme, who used his specialist skills and knowledge as a lawyer.

"You made it work. You set up the trusts and lent respectability, as a lawyer, to a criminal organisation."

Simpson was reckless and brought the legal profession into disrepute, however, the judge was satisfied he was genuine in his remorse.

Despite this, Simpson was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.

"I deeply regret a father being separated from his family. However, that is a consequence of your decisions."

Neither man was charged with drug offences.

But the police allege the Comanchero, an Australian gang which set up shop in New Zealand after a number of senior members were deported here, are behind significant drug smuggling linked to a Mexican cartel.

In July, a 60-year-old man who travelled to Mexico was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to four charges of importing a Class A drug after being identified in Operation Nova.

Tallat Rahman, from Suva, was arrested in February 2019 in the first phase of the inquiry, which discovered how parcels of methamphetamine weighing up to 5kg were hidden inside kitchen appliances shipped from the United States.

Once in New Zealand, the police allege the drugs were distributed by "frontmen" for the Comanchero, whose hierarchy allegedly reaped the rewards of the illicit trade.

Rahman was unknown to the team of detectives running Operation Nova until he was overheard talking to one of the "frontmen", who cannot be named for legal reasons, whose phone conversations were bugged by police.

He said: "You're going to start off with a nice number with two zeroes. I'm going to land it between you and me ... [I'll give you] all the f***en work you can handle. We're going to land it there [in New Zealand]."

The cheap wholesale price of $120,000 per kilogram was agreed to by both parties, in a deal the police believed would weigh at least 100kg ("a nice number with two zeros").

The call was made in Mexico and the caller was identified as Rahman; a Fijian-Indian who lived in Suva, who had dual Canadian citizenship and travelled regularly to Mexico and the United States.

Everything went quiet until Rahman flew into Auckland International Airport on December 18, 2018, and checked into a hotel on Queen St, the Four Points by Sheraton.

Three days later, Rahman's son checked into the same hotel and was seen meeting with another man, a 19-year-old Mexican national, who also cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Two days before Christmas, December 23, 2018, Rahman left New Zealand but not before receiving a backpack full of cash.

Around the same time, a consignment of a kitchen stovetops shipped from the United States had been seized by Customs and examined. There was nearly 5kg of methamphetamine inside.

Then in February 2019, two separate consignments from the United States - a "waffle maker" and "coffee brewer"- were stopped at the border by Customs, each containing 2.9kg of methamphetamine.

Rahman returned to New Zealand and was arrested by the National Organised Crime Group, along with the 19-year-old from Mexico and a 33-year-old Chinese man called Hui Wang. He was called the "Wire Guy" because he laundered hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash in wire transfers overseas.

Search warrants were also executed at the home linked to Rahman in Suva where Fijian Police discovered 39kg of cocaine, presumably destined for the Australian and New Zealand markets. The haul was worth about $20m.

When brought in for questioning by police, Rahman claimed to be in New Zealand on holiday.

When detectives told him that an audio device had been covertly installed in his hotel room on Queen St, Rahman said: "Oh shit".

Man who imported 14kg of meth connected to Comancheros jailed for seven years

A drug dealer who imported 14kg of methamphetamine for the Comancheros in New Zealand has been jailed.

Samuel Vaisevuraki was arrested in February 2019, in the first phase of Operation Nova, before Comanchero president Pasilika Naufahu and associates were arrested in April 2019.

On Thursday, Vaisevuraki was sentenced to seven years by Judge Nevin Dawson for his “significant” part in the “sophisticated" operation.

The 42-year-old previously admitted four charges of importing methamphetamine, supplying the Class A drug and also two charges of conspiring to deal the drug. In total 14 kg of methamphetamine was involved.

Vaisevuraki, had not been named publicly before, but his name was mentioned countless times during Naufahu’s trial in September 2020.

The court heard in 2018 Vaisevuraki was living in Sydney when he was approached after his family were threatened over a family member's debts.

Methamphetamine was then imported into New Zealand in kitchen appliances from the United States.

Defence lawyer Dale Dufty said Vaisevuraki now accepted he was involved in the offending, which began out of motivation to pay off debt, make money and also fuel his own drug addiction.

Dufty said his client had a “terrible” upbringing and since been in prison had attempted to distance himself from gangs.

However, Dufty submitted, it was Vaisevuraki’s family member who was the central architect in the offending.

Crown prosecutor James Herring said Vaisevuraki played a “significant” role in the importation and was a primary distributor, receiving money from stakeholders both in New Zealand and overseas.

Judge Dawson said this was sophisticated offending in a commercial enterprise for the criminal organisation.

The judge accepted the man had been “greatly misled” by his family member and found a causative link between Vaisevuraki's background and the offending.

Judge Dawson said Vaisevuraki, having left gangs and motivated to address the drug addiction, had displayed insight into his offending and hoped once released he could have a good life.

Operation Nova In early 2018 police from the National Organised Crime Group began an investigation and identified a joint criminal enterprise importing methamphetamine into New Zealand involving members of the Comancheros and associates.

Drugs were imported into the country through catering appliances, sent from United States-based restaurant equipment supplies to various addresses in New Zealand.

These appliances were packed with methamphetamine.

Tallat Rahman and his son Joshua sourced the drug and arranged for its delivery to New Zealand.

Vaisevuraki was one of the men on the ground to receive, distribute and receive cash for distribution to various stakeholders both internationally and domestically, court documents said.

Discussions were had with other defendants about how Vaisevuraki could sell 5kg of meth weekly.

During the Naufahu trial, hours of intercepted communications were played to the jury, much of which involved Vaisevuraki.

On September 20, 2018, an audio device was fitted in Vaisevuraki’s vehicle after he had arrived into Auckland from Sydney days earlier.

In the recording, Vaisevuraki can be heard getting frustrated with He Sha – a hairdresser from Sydney – talking about a “deal” that he can make nearly half a million dollars from.

“This is the biggest gang in New Zealand, if they put word on the street about you, no-one comes near you.”

Vaisevuraki goes on to tell Sha about the “richest man in the country” who has a billion dollars.

This deal never eventuated.

The day before, Vaisevuraki was observed leaving a Karaka address in a ute.

Officers then observed the ute park up in Howick next to a white Range Rover. Shortly after Vaisevuraki and Naufahu were seen by police sitting in the Howick Village Cafe.

I was always encouraged by my mum to be creative (she always wishes that there were as many options for design and art as there are now back when she was at school). Some of my best childhood memories have been drawing and spending time doing crafts with her. Even though my mum was a lawyer, she was an amazing drawer and I always aspired to be able to draw as well as her which is why I put so much time into developing my illustration skills. She has always been my biggest influence and support in studying design.

I was also born with amniotic band syndrome which means that my left arm stops just after my elbow. Being one handed is a massive part of my identity, even when I have not always wanted it to be, and has shaped and influenced everything I have and will ever do. It made me switch from skiing to snowboarding and stopped me from ever getting the perfect cartwheel. I think part of the reason I am a designer and creative is because of my arm. Creativity gives me a way to express myself that isn't defined by my physical appearance or lack of hand.

My capstone project which detailed mine and my parents experience of having a kid with one hand.

Through University I have become more and more comfortable with my identity as a disabled designer (something I would have never wanted to be associated as during high school) and it has given me the chance to grow. Jury finds two men guilty of kidnapping bodybuilder

A jury has found two men guilty of kidnapping and perverting the course of justice at Auckland's High Court.

Khalid Naser Slaimankhel and Junior Iolima Paea were each convicted on a charge of kidnapping bodybuilder Marven Yacoub.

They were each found guilty on a charge of perverting the course of justice.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case of Jen Jay Law, who faced a sole charge of kidnapping.

Slaimankhel showed no reaction when the verdict of guilty was handed down for the kidnapping charge but shook his head when the same verdict was announced on the perverting the course of justice charge. Paea showed no reaction to the verdicts.

After hearing nine days of evidence, an 11-person jury took just over a day to reach its verdicts. It was the third jury to hear the case. A first trial in May 2014 ended with a hung jury on all counts, while a second trial was aborted after four days when the jury heard information deemed likely to be prejudicial to Slaimankhel's fair trial rights.

The trial centered on whether victim Marven Yacoub's account of being accosted at a Burger King by Paea and two unknown associates and taken to law office in Ponsonby against his will to swear a false statement to be used in Slaimankel's bail hearing the following day could be believed.

The jury heard that Law lured Mr Yacoub to Burger King Mangere on the understanding that he would sell him steroids. Law admitted to police he purchased a new phone sim card to help avoid detection. On the day of the kidnapping he sent Mr Yacoub a text pretending to be inside the Burger King toilets but he was in fact at home in Hamilton.

Slaimankhel arranged for Paea and his associates to kidnap Mr Yacoub from the Burger King and take him to the office of his lawyer Isaac Koya to swear a statement taking responsibility for 1048 green steroid fat burner pills found in the boot of his BMW during a police stop 10 days earlier.

Slaimankhel was under police surveillance when he met Mr Yacoub in the Sylvia Park car park to take possession of the pills.

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the kidnapping, including the two unknown men taking up positions either side of Mr Yacoub and apparently parting their shirts to reveal gang insignia.

Mr Yacoub testified that Paea threatened to harm his family unless he did what he was told.

The defense contended the meeting was nothing more than an amicable meeting between friends and that Paea had driven Mr Yacoub to Ponsonby because he owed him $300, which he would be able to get from Slaimankhel, who still owed Mr Yacoub money for the steroid pills.

The defense painted Mr Yacoub as a liar and steroid dealer who had concocted his story to aid his chances of avoiding a criminal conviction after a raid on his house uncovered a cache of steroids in a shoe box.

Mr Yacoub's version of what happened at the law office was strongly rebutted by Mr Koya and another lawyer, Gary Gotlieb. Mr Yacoub testified that Slaimankhel had told him what to say in the statement while Paea continued to threaten him as Mr Koya typed on his computer. Slaimankhel and Paea had then hovered menacingly in the doorway while he signed the document in Mr Gotlieb's office.

Mr Koya testified that although it was against his normal practice he had allowed Slaimankhel and Paea to remain in the office. He had three times warned Slaimankhel to be quiet but Paea hadn't said a word and Mr Yacoub had made his statement willingly.

Mr Gotlieb said Mr Yacoub's claim that Mr Koya had been in his office while he swore the statement and that Slaimankhel and Paea had hovered in the doorway was wrong. The door had been shut and only he and Mr Yacoub had been in his office. Mr Yacoub had appeared relaxed, Mr Gotlieb testified.

The jury heard text message evidence that showed how the kidnapping had been planned and executed. Text messages found on Paea's phone were particularly damning. Two days before the kidnapping he sent a text to an unknown associate that read: "I Got a job for us Monday… And if it works out well will get paid on the spot my uso.."

Another text sent from Paea's phone to an unknown associate while Mr Yacoub was at the law office said: "Soon we at the lawyers better pray to the almighty to keep us safe my uso.. Cause I'm starting to feel very funny about this now."

Later that evening, the court heard Paea sent a text to Slaimankhel as the pair apparently discussed whether Mr Yacoub would appear as instructed at Slaimankhel's bail hearing. "Everything all goods," Paea texted.

"I think M will be there tomorrow because he knows that we now know his ins and outs and where he sleeps and the ones he loves will."
