Hi!
This weekend I decided to attempt to redeem myself after the Uvita experience and try for another beach weekend. This weekend I went to Playa Jacó in Puntarenas on the western coast of Costa Rica. We also went on an ATV tour, so if you don’t care about the other stuff and just wanna read about that, feel free to scroll down about 8 paragraphs.
We left after class Friday and made it to the bus station, on the bus, and to Jacó all within three hours and without a hitch. Our bus tickets for the 2.5 hour ride cost ~$5USD each, and our stay at Hostel de Haan cost ~$17. Anyone that says they don’t travel because it’s “too expensive” should stay tuned because I have a whole lot to say about that in a later post.
Playa Jacó is not quite as spectacular as Bahia de Bellenas, but we didn’t have to pay for access to the beach, which was nice. It’s still a beautiful beach full of young people, surfers, and dogs and bookended by mountains... so you really can’t go wrong. The town of Jacó is pretty small and very tourist-y, making it easy to get sucked into buying a $40 sundress and then putting it on to purchase a $15 cocktail, so, like in any tourist town, it’s important to look for where the locals eat and shop. We didn’t do this, because of how weakened our willpower against American food was after two months of different variations of rice and beans, but if a bar is full of white people watching American football, chances are you could grab a lunch for about half or a quarter of the price that you’re about to pay for that burger and bud light. I’m looking at you, dads.
We got to our hostel, Hostel de Haan, around 5:00 and checked in with an incredibly helpful guy named Wilson, who showed us around and gave us some ideas of things to do around town. Also— it’s very worth mentioning that the hostel management realized that we’d be the only two girls in a 10-bed dorm of guys, and upgraded us to a private two-bed room for free, because those are the kind of good dudes that run the hostel.
We put our backpacks down and went downstairs to make drinks and hang out by the pool, and ended up meeting some super hospitable guys playing cards down there. The guys had all met in the hostel and were from Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Canada. We hung out with them for the rest of the night, drinking, swimming in the hostel pool, and checking out some bars around town. They all promised to look out for us and make sure nothing shady happened, which was very cool, because ladies’ nights are VERY popular with Costa Rican bars.
“Ladies’ night” in the states usually means that women get in without a cover. In Costa Rica, ladies’ night means women don’t pay a cover... or pay for drinks. As it turns out, it’s a lot easier to lose track of how many drinks you’ve ordered when it doesn’t affect your bank account. Like, way easier. We’ve decided we should stop going to our local ladies’ night spot on Friday nights in San José for safety, but Lady Luck loves to smile on me in really weird ways, and somehow it’s happened to be ladies night at every bar I’ve been to. I have been here for two months and have yet to pay for a drink. It probably goes without saying, but this is a double-edged sword.
Anyway, the guys stayed true to their word and made sure my friend and I were never by ourselves or talking to anybody we didn’t want to be. Somehow the people you meet while traveling are from another planet than the strangers in your real life, and have been continually astounding me throughout the past couple months.
Anyway, after a night of drinking, we had a reservation for early the next morning to go on an ATV tour in the jungle. Does that sound like a bad combination? It is. Luckily we had force-fed ourselves some good old fashioned American hangover food from the diner across the street before we went, which is potentially the only thing that saved me from ugly crying on a loud, bouncy, hot ATV ride.
Someone from Ocean Ranch Park came and picked us up from our hotel at 9:30, took us to pick up the two other girls on our tour, and then drove us out to the ranch. We signed waivers, our guide showed us how to use the ATVs, we drove around a field for a little while to get the feel for it, and then we went. We literally went from leisurely cruising around a field to gunning it, full speed, down narrow trails with steep inclines, rivers, creeks, and pits of mud. As someone who has met (and had to keep alive) quite a variety of “adventurous” tourists, I did not envy the job of our guide. But, we were all young, capable, ballsy, twenty-something girls on vacation, so hopefully we didn’t give our sweet guide too hard a time.
I have never been so dirty, or so happy, in my life. We stopped at a couple places to get in the water, de-mud, and cool off, but for the most part we were rocketing through the jungle in very stupid-looking helmets for three hours. When it was done, the guide cut us up some fresh pineapple, and then headed off to take another tour. The guides take zipline tours, horseback riding tours, and waterfall rappelling tours in addition to the ATV tours... in case you were still deciding what you wanted to be when you grow up. The whole tour, start to finish— hotel pickup, intro, tour, fruit— was $65. As we were hanging out after the tour, we met the owner of the property, as well as a biologist/engineer who invented a slow-going zipline for biologists, nature enthusiasts, older folks, and differently-abled people who wanted to experience nature at a bit slower and in a less participative manner. This guy, along with his partner, a Jurassic Park John Hammond lookalike who made me feel even more as though we were inside the movie than I already had, offered us a ride back to Jacó, so we went with them instead of calling an Uber-- another nice deed from some more very kind humans. We spent the rest of the day on the beach, watching people surf and enjoying being away from San José for a bit.
The bus ride back was equally as quick and painless, and now I’m back in San José until my next adventure.
Here are some photos--
Night 1 at the hostel
Quick stop to cool off
Another stop to cool off in a waterfall
Other than that, there’s no bananas.

5 Best ATV Tours in Costa Rica
From extreme off-road adventures to tranquil tours through stunning landscapes, ATV riding is one of the best ways to immerse in a nature excursion on your trip to Costa Rica.
1) All Across the Central Pacific
A multitude of marvels that bring visitors from around the world to Costa Rica can be experienced in a single spectacular ATV tour. One ride can take you across unspoiled beaches, to jaw-dropping waterfalls, past vast stretches of unspoiled countryside and deep into lush rainforests. Along the way, you can stop off at remote villages and secluded cantinas that lie far off the usual tourist tracks. Setting off from the buzzing beach town of Jacó, Central Pacific tours often begin with a near immediate plunge into mountain terrain carpeted by primary rainforest, wind past rushing rivers and pause at glorious outlooks over the Pacific Ocean.
2) 7 Pueblos for Costa Rican Culture
To experience authentic Costa Rican culture away from the more-visited areas, a quad ride through seven remote villages is hard to beat. This second of the Central Pacific adventures also cruises through rich rainforest and allows for time to refresh in a secluded swimming spot before a towering waterfall. But riders are often equally impressed with the small towns they encounter such as Bijagual. Another top draw includes a respite at a tilapia farm where you can fish at a scenic pond and enjoy the freshest-of-fresh meal before mounting up to further explore the verdant countryside.
3) Mountain Views and Amazing Coffee from Uvita
Costa Rica’s Southern Zone offers splendid opportunities to tear off on ATV rides that weave through a rich bio-diverse environment. Tours that depart from the seaside village of Uvita de Osa cross scenic beaches on the way to ascents up coastal mountain ranges to reach fresh crisp air at an altitude of 4,000 feet. Enjoy sweeping views over hills, valleys and sea. Continue to cross bamboo forests, banana farms and untouched countryside on your way to a coffee plantation. Savor a fresh cup of Costa Rica’s famed java before continuing on your scenic adventure.
4) Ride Beside the Arenal Volcano
One of Costa Rica’s most-iconic volcanoes, the majestic mount has surrounding terrain that's perfect for ATV rides. Roll across ground that’s pocked by craters resulting from the Arenal Volcano’s last eruption in the late 1960s. Splash through rivers rich with volcanic mud, used in high-end spas as an exfoliant. Climb hills to pause at a lookout point with an inspiring view of Lake Arenal. Cruise past cattle farms and stop off in the quaint hamlets surrounding the charming town of La Fortuna.
5) Take off in Tamarindo
Famed for its pristine beaches, the Guanacaste region along Costa Rica’s Northern Pacific coast has equally amazing nature set back from the beach. A roar through the mountainous region above the coast takes you to an elevation of 1,200 feet and into a stretch of jungle that’s rife with wildlife. Watch out for a variety of monkeys and colorful birds amid a landscape of tropical greenery. Cruise past cantaloupe farms and stop off at a 19th-century farmhouse to get a glimpse at traditional life that has remained largely unchanged for over a century.
Quad riding along 4X4 trails is one of the best ways to experience the myriad of amazing Costa Rica destinations and add some high-octane fun to your low-stress escape to paradise.

Costa Rica Solo Travel Destinations & Ideas
Solo travel isn’t just for bloggers, backpackers, and whimsical spirits trying to “find” themselves. Feel free to Eat, Pray, Love your way through Costa Rica, but you don’t have to embody the solo travel stereotype to have a great time.
There is something for everyone in Costa Rica. It’s a friendly place for solo travelers with a good selection of hotels and lodges in every major destination. Read through for some unique Costa Rica solo travel destinations and ideas from the Costa Rica Experts.
Join a Pacuare River Whitewater Rafting Overnight Trip (1 or 2 nights)
Solo travelers are often assumed to be adventurous types, which is why we must recommend the level III-IV whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River and its famous rainforest scenery. This tour can be taken as a 1-day trip from San Jose, but the best way to experience the magic of the Pacuare River is on the overnight whitewater rafting trip. This experience takes you deep into the heart of the rainforest via raft. You’ll stay in the rainforest for one or two nights before rafting back out again.
Rios Tropicales rafting
The best option for solo travelers is typically Rios Tropicales Lodge. Rios Tropicales operates rafting tours across Costa Rica and is the gold standard for safety and service on the Pacuare. The lodge is rustic but the natural rainforest playground that surrounds it is the real highlight. While this tour doesn’t operate for just one person, a solo traveler can join an existing trip with passengers already scheduled to the raft.
Pacuare Lodge
Pacuare Lodge is a great option for solo travelers who want a luxury eco-lodge experience in Costa Rica. Guests of the lodge stay for 2 nights and have complimentary experiences included in their stay. On the Pacuare Lodge property, schedule a morning of zip-lining, hike to a waterfall, or just hang out at the riverside spa.
After rafting, you can transfer back to the central San Jose area OR continue by ground to Arenal or Puerto Viejo.
Skip San Jose and Explore the Central Valley
The Central Valley can be a great alternative to San Jose for solo travelers. It’s quieter. It’s greener. The views are usually better. It’s a great entry point to Costa Rica and has some fantastically unique hotels.
youtube
Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn is a gem in Heredia, just twenty minutes from the airport. Guests arrive at a quaint inn adorned with tropical trees and flowers. Beyond the check-in area, the real magnitude of Finca Rosa Blanca is realized along meandering pathways that lead to fairytale Junior Suites. Each suite is completely different from the next. The common room features hand-painted murals by local artists and the restaurant Is one of the best in the entire San Jose/Central Valley area. The legacy of Finca Rosa Blanca is its coffee plantation, which proudly operates at the highest levels of sustainability and respect for the Costa Rican coffee tradition.
Xandari Resort & Spa
Xandari Resort & Spa is a short drive from the airport but a world away. The lively colors and bold shapes in the architecture and design are a feast for the eyes, matched only by the sweeping views of the entire Central Valley. The spacious villas feature wide balconies, where guests can take in sunrises that creep up from behind the mountains and heavy sunsets that set the sky ablaze on a clear day. The main pool at Xandari uses the scenic valley vistas as a backdrop. The second pool is surrounded by tall, tropical trees and vegetation. Xandari is a great introduction to Costa Rica’s ecology. A morning hike along the property trails will get you acquainted with the rainforest and even a few small waterfalls. The self-serve buffet breakfast doesn’t skimp on Turrialba cheese and endless coffee; fill up here before a day of Costa Rica solo travel activities.
Get Deep in the Rainforest
Solo travel gets real when you’re in the middle of the rainforest. Instead of partying at a hostel or hitchhiking through the country, solo travel can be a much-needed escape from the busy world.
After a night or two in the Central Valley or San Jose, take a short flight to the Osa Peninsula and see what Costa Rica is really all about. The Osa Peninsula is one of the best places for solo travel in Costa Rica because the lodges are small and set within the rainforest. You’ll only be with a handful of other guests at any given moment, and you definitely won’t hear the beat of the club thumping into the wee hours of the morning.
Immerse yourself in the tranquility of remote rainforest life by staying at one of the many excellent eco-lodges in Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez. Typically, guests stay 3-4 nights at a lodge, with all meals and transportation included. This is a great option for solo travelers, as it puts you in contact with fellow travelers but doesn’t restrict you from traveling as a group.
From the lodges in Drake Bay, you can take a guided hike of Corcovado National Park. You’ll travel by boat to the ranger station before heading out in search of rainforest wildlife. Also from Drake Bay is Cano Island, one of the best snorkel and SCUBA locations in Costa Rica.
Seaside yoga from Playa Nicuesa Lodge
Puerto Jimenez sees the most traffic of the Osa Peninsula destinations, with some of the best eco-lodge within a 45-minute drive. Solo travelers can fill their time with self-guided hikes, yoga, massage, and off-site tours booked through the concierge. Across the Golfo Dulce is Piedras Blancas National Park, with lodges Playa Cativo and Playa Nicuesa giving guests access to its untamed rainforest trails.
Eat Your Way Around
A good meal can mean everything to a solo traveler and San Jose is one of the best places to get a little taste of everything.
Grando de Oro Restaurant
On the refined end, the restaurant at Grano de Oro has been pleasing local diners and international foodies alike for decades. The rooftop tapas bar at Hotel Presidente is a perfect way to begin or end your night in downtown San Jose.
Costa Rica Foodie Tours are a handful of specially curated experiences that give you an honest taste of local food. This fun and casual San Jose food tour will fill you up, give you some social time, and take you on a tour of the Amon neighborhood.
El Castille restaurant solo travelers
Ojochal is twenty minutes south of Uvita on the South Pacific coast and an off-the-tourist-radar spot where you can enjoy some of the country’s best undiscovered restaurants and hotels. Start at Castillo Kitchen for an amazing dinner in a 6-room villa called El Castillo (literally ‘The Castle’ in Spanish). The quaint property peers dramatically over the coastline and while you’d never guess just by looking, it has one of the best restaurants for miles.
youtube
New to the Ojochal scene is Hotel 360, also serving up some of the best views in all of Central America. Dine with views of Cano Island to the south and Uvita to the north. The gourmet menu is constantly reinvented and adjusted to make use of the best local, seasonal ingredients. There is a legend among Costa Rica Experts about the hotel’s creamy seafood risotto.
You don’t have to dine at only hotels in Ojochal; Citrus is a well-known local favorite that always gets it right.
Retreat & Relax
The Retreat
Some people choose to travel solo because they seek respite from the demands of our busy world. Solo travel in Costa Rica is a great chance to reset and feel good about yourself inside and out. The Retreat is a short drive from the San Jose airport, so within an hour or two of landing, you can be relaxing poolside with a healthy tropical smoothie in hand. The Retreat’s yoga platform is a perfect place to start your day.
Bodhi Tree Resort yoga
Continue the wellness at Bhodi Tree Resort, of the best yoga hotels in Costa Rica. The Playa Guiones/Nosara area is one on the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s five Blue Zones. You’ll definitely leave here feeling lucid and centered.
Understand Local Life in Manuel Antonio
Solo travelers who favor off-the-beaten-path locations tend to skip Manuel Antonio. It is one of the most popular places in Costa Rica, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a rich and meaningful experience.
If you’ve already hiked Manuel Antonio National Park and seen the Damas Island mangroves, try exploring the area’s impressive cultural scene.
Santa Juana Lodge
Santa Juana is a rural mountain tour 45 minutes from San Jose and a popular day trip for people who want to explore waterfalls, try tilapia fishing, learn about sugar cane production and processing, and learn about general life in the Santa Juana mountain pueblo. For the full experience, stay at Santa Juana Mountain Lodge for 1 or 2 nights.
The Villa Vanilla Spice tour brings guests in touch with local spices and plants. Dissect the flavors of Costa Rica through an easy-paced morning on a local spice farm.
Base Yourself on the Beach
Tamarindo
Sometimes what you need more than anything else is a couple of days on a gorgeous beach. Tamarindo is one of the most notorious backpacker and solo travel beach towns in Costa Rica and Playa Tamarindo is one of the best beaches. In Tamarindo, you’ll share the beach with a mix of families, couples, groups, and other solo travelers. You’ll have a selection of restaurants, bars, surf shops, and beach vendors to patronize between surfing and sunning. Stay at Tamarindo Diria for something right in the center of the action or Capitan Suizo for something a bit quieter.
Playa Guiones in the Nosara area is a quieter alternative to Tamarindo, known locally as one of the chillest beaches around. This area is famous for yoga, surfing, and general good vibes. Diane Lane and The Red Hot Chili Peppers love it here so why wouldn’t you?
Santa Teresa is perfect for the traveler who is part yogi, part surfer, part explorer. Hit the famous waves with local lifetime surfers, visit Montezuma Waterfall, rent an ATV, or simply walk along the miles of rugged Nicoya coast for the perfect solo adventure.
Go on a Luxury Safari
Nayara Tented Camp
Imagine having a luxury safari tent all to yourself without going all the way to Africa! You don’t have to travel too far for luxury solo travel experience because Costa Rica has you covered. The brand new Nayara Tented Camp is restoring the mystery of the rainforest back to Arenal, while Origins Luxury Lodge has transformed the high-end hotel scene in Upala. The addition of Kasiiya to Papagayo’s coasts rounds out the luxury safari tent experience in Costa Rica.
The beaten path can be tempting, but solo travel is one of the best opportunities to dig deeper into your destination and do things you might normally not in a tour group. Best Places to Travel When You`re On a Budget [Video]
Any destination could become a budget plan destination with the best travel suggestions. It is much easier to select your traveling with budgeting in mind.
Here are my five favorite nations that are great for vacationers on a spending plan ...
Costa Rica
Costa Rica's adage is Pura Vida suggesting easy or pure life. More compared to just a stating, it is a way of life in Costa Rica. It is difficult to not like Costa Rica because it really has something for everyone. Adventure vacationers could attempt a countless listing of activities like zip cellular lining, ATVing, as well as horseback riding. If you are outdoorsy, both hiking and also waterfall chasing are preferred activities. Into pets? Wildlife watching is easy with the wealth of birds, whales, bugs, monkeys, and sloths that wander the country.
Where to go:
Uvita: Less congested compared to nearby Dominical, Uvita has plenty of lovely beaches and waterfalls.
Arenal: Called for the huge Volcano that overlook the city, do not miss hiking the lava rocks.
Monteverde: Called the cloud forest, the altitude in Monteverde creates an unique setting which plays host to a variety of plants and animals.
Thailand
So a lot of your pals are posting concerning Thailand merely due to the fact that it is impressive. Inexpensive, gorgeous, and packed with culture you actually can't fail in any area. Cheap flights are easy to locate to Bangkok International Airport terminal (officially called Suvarnabhumi Airport) from virtually anywhere. When in Thailand flights to different areas are affordable - as is whatever else.
Where to go:
Chiang Mai: Found in north Thailand, known for jungles and also elephants. PS ... please don't ride elephants. Rather, see a sanctuary.
Bangkok: Chaotic roads, outrageous nightlife, as well as very low-cost. Think about it as New york city City on steroids.
The Islands: Anywhere is lovely so don't overthink it. Ko Phi Phi is the most popular (and also most congested and most costly). Phuket is an event island while Krabi is a bit calmer.
Morocco
A diverse landscape with hills, desserts, as well as souks to explore, expect chaos almost everywhere yet accept the special society. I promise Morocco is nothing like you have ever before seen prior to. You do not have to prepare in advance, private vehicle drivers and also trips are exceptionally low-cost once you show up. Book them through your resort or hostel (again, not online prior to!!!) so you see to it you obtain the most effective price.
Where to go:
Marrakech: One of the most popular as well as largest city, Marrakech is a should see. The popular square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, sees countless individuals a day, eating from food stands, obtaining henna tattoos, watching live music, magicians, as well as witch doctors.
Fez: The resources of Morocco till 1912, Fez is a city packed with history. Its roads are over 1200 years old as well as filled with an eclectic mix of sights, seems or even smells.
The Sahara: Not technically a city yet you need to absolutely go to while in Morocco. 3-day journeys from Marrakech or Fez start at around $80, all comprehensive, consisting of camel riding.
India
A huge country with a significant population, India is sensory overload in the best way feasible. I had not been expecting India to be so downright gorgeous, it really shocked me when I took a trip there. You could stay at luxurious 5-star resorts for next to nothing or backpack on a shoestring budget.
Where to go:
Start with India's golden triangular: Delhi, Jaipur, as well as Agra. It is a superb introduction to the big country and includes top sights like the red fort in Jaipur and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Portugal
Any nation in Europe can be done on a budget yet Portugal makes it the simplest. I don't comprehend why it is so frequently neglected for Spain. Portugal is wonderful in its own. You could anticipate coastlines, cliffsides, a growing wine country, economical as well as dynamic night life, and also the most colorful buildings and castles you will certainly ever before see.
Where to go:
Porto: Understood for its port wine production, Porto is a stunning city on the water. Beaches are close by and complete field trip to surrounding areas are cheap.
Lisbon: The capital and also biggest city in Portugal, Lisbon is in fact among the oldest cities on the planet. It predates Paris, Rome, as well as London by centuries.
Coming up
In my following article, I am going to share a few of my finest ideas for budgeting when you get on an irregular income. It's a bit off the travel subject, but something I had to grasp and I'm excited to share my budgeting system!
