I've arrived at CERN!
While it is exciting, I'm also finding it really difficult. This is all very unfamiliar. I'm not used to sitting in a shared office space all day with people who are essentially strangers. I'm getting socially exhausted often, and it's been difficult to recover and keep it. Today, it felt like nothing at all went right, so I felt awful when I got off work.
BUT I've done some self-care, and I'm better. I did accomplish a lot today, and this is a really difficult experience. So, I'm trying to be kind to myself, and remember all the positive things that happened today instead of the negatives.
Pictured is my ATLAS water bottle, and the view from my hostel!

thank you for tagging me @kiki-strike !! <33
10 characters 10 fandoms 10 (ish) tags!
1. Azula ATLA - she's a girlboss. she's a pathetic poor little meow meow. she's a manipulative mastermind. she's a socially awkward wreck. she's a child soldier whose mother left her & who's father treated her like a weapon. she's the most formidable villain the heroes have ever faced. i love her
2. Ashley Graves TCOAAL - a controversial pick MAYBE but I love to see a demon-worshipping cannibal queen winning (committing unspeakable acts but it's ok because her mom didn't love her & also she is baby have u considered that?) i think ashley should be allowed to commit all the atrocities she wants as a treat on the grounds that her parents were so awful they left her to starve to death & before that, pretended not to notice when she & her brother accidentally killed a girl in middle school
3. Natalie Scatorcio, Yellowjackets - 2 cannibal queens in a row I must have a type <3 I love a tragic hero who is also a violent, dangerous & unstable individual. forgiveness is a nice idea but my poor doomed antler queen will never live to see it... she was a gentle soul (ignore the atrocities) who never got to see a single moment of peace or gentleness in her life
4. Sam Carpenter, Scream - it was nearly impossible for me to pick between my best girls Sidney, Emma, & Sam for this list but I have to go Sam. she's the daughter of a serial killer. she enjoys stabbing people. she sees visions of her dead dad telling her to kill but she loves her friends & her sister more than anything. i adore my dangerous & violent but also oh so sweet babygirl
5. Faith Lehane Buffy the Vampire Slayer - listen, Buffy is the obvious choice for the best character in Buffy OFC. but have you considered. faith is broken & hurt & a little crazy with jealousy & obsession with buffy. she's the dark slayer. she has a dynamic with the wacky evil demonic town mayor that mirrors buffy's relationship with her wholesome (mostly. sometimes demon rebelly) librarian mentor as the dark side of the coin. she's never had anyone pick her first & it kills her but she pretends she doesn't care. i'd die for her
6. Baby Firefly - this time not a confirmed cannibal but my girl is into corpse desecration & necrophilia so I think this is a great list that proves I have excellent taste in fictional characters. "there is no wrong. if someone needs to be killed you kill 'em! that's the way :)"
7. Beth Salinger, Hostel 2 - fave final girl my bestie had a hot lesbian enemies to almost lovers to beheading you & playing soccer with the head dynamic with an evil secret society member who tried to lure her to her death. she also cut off the penis of the man who dared to fuck with her & fed it to a dog so like what more can you even want from a character <3
8. Dennis Reynolds IASIP - having dennis as my fave is soo embarrassing he's such a basic fave but genuinely he's SO fucking pathetic & sad beneath the layers of fake manipulative suave cool rich kid that he thinks he conveys (he doesn't). he's literally just a sad little girl who falls apart & curls up on he ground crying when things get overwhelming. everyone who doesn't understand him thinks he's a mastermind serial killer but they are FALLING FOR HIS ACT
9. Katherine Pierce TVD - THEY HATE TO SEE A GIRLBOSS WINNINGGGGGGG (I don't know Scarlet Witch but I think it's funny to steal the description for #9 for Katherine from the person who tagged me in this hehe) anyway it's funny for me to pick Katherine when I named my cat damon & I have a ginormous shirtless poster of ian somerhalder literally over my bed I'm looking at it right now BUT hear me out. Katherine is my real fave. unforgivable villain who always chooses herself first & also mirrors the protagonist & also she was just a girl once too, a pregnant, scared young girl. if the writers cared about me specifically at all we would've gotten a spin off of Katherine & her daughter instead of what we got
10. Annie Edison Community - much like with buffy the vampire slayer & buffy summers, there is a correct answer to which community character is objectively the best & it's obviously abed. BUT my subjective fave that I latch onto is annie. she's just so babygirl. she had a nervous breakdown in high school because she was always too perfect. she's just out of rehab for adderall when we meet her but it's mostly only referenced or flashed back to as a joke. we never meet her parents but the quotes she references from them are deeply disturbing if you turn off the laugh track & pay attention. she has a fucked up relationship with her good older male friend because #daddy issues. she is obsessed with true crime. there's a monkey named after her boobs. she's the ONLY member of the study group who could've EVER lived with troy & abed & incorporated herself into their dynamic the way she does in episodes like foosball & nocturnal vigilantism. my girl is so silly & a little crazy <3
anyway
thank u for the tag i love rambling about my fave characters!!
I tag: @missjessefantastico, @theowritesfiction @dont-leafmealone, @peony-pearl, @stalker-among-the-stars @bearsandbeansart @chasingfictions @hello-nichya-here, @lunaintheskyforever, @gathering0gloom, @jctko, @jet-apologistmybadhomies, @745voiceofthepeople, @prodogg, @matchamarshmallow
ok if you wanted to be tagged please just say I tagged you also no pressure to the people I tagged it's just for fun if u want :)

Dystopian heroines lesser known than Katniss Everdeen and Tris Prior
Wanted a small exercise in drawing very different kind of people, using the heroines of amazing dystopias I can recommend, and got a bit carried away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tally Youngblood – Uglies Series (Scott Westerfeld)
Mischievous, lonely, but also a bit naïve and sheltered Tally wants nothing more than to be made Pretty, to fit in, to be how she should be. As she meets the unconventional Shay, these ideas get challenged, and for a while, the two carve out every little bit of freedom their world allows them. Then Shay vanishes, and the suddenly not that friendly and utopian anymore government forces Tally to find her.
Uglies has this nice dreamy, almost utopian feeling to it, but you always sense that there is something horrible in the background. But the heart of the series, also in the two following books, is Tally and Shays quite real feeling, somewhat homoerotic (sadly only implied though, not canon) and very dysfunctional relationship. This was one of the first YA dystopias to get big, and even predates The Hunger Games, but is not as famous anymore, even if this year a movie finally will come out. Sadly, despite Tally in the books being chubby to fat, at least in the first book, and her ethnicity never stated, they cast a thin white actress for her though. 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonmi-451 – Cloud Atlas (David Mitchell)
Sonmi was created as a servant in a fast food chain, but despite being as quiet as she was meant to be, she also is curious and smart and seeks justice, and as she wants more of her life than that, she ends up in a conspiracy that could end the rule of the companies governing Neo Seol.
Sonmis tale, told as an interview before her execution, is one of six stories in Cloud Atlas. I love stories of clones and androids coming into their own and realizing that they are people, and this one was one of my favorites as a teen.2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ria – Die Verratenen (Ursula Poznanski)
Ria, a genius at rhetoric and at reading people, and always rational, is one of the leading students in sphere Hoffnung. But then she finds out about a planned assassination of her and five others, and is forced to flee into the ice-cold wilderness outside and has to bargain with the clans living there. The clans again and again attacking supply trains between the spheres. It turns out there is more to the hostility of the two groups than the spheres let her think. But they are still in danger…
A german book, I remember reading this down in one big train journey. There is always just another cliffhanger, you can’t lay this book down. The criticism of elitism and first world-third world divide is interesting too.3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aster Grey – An Unkindness of Ghosts (Rivers Solomon)
Smart and adaptive enough to be a healer, but stern and socially awkward enough to be somewhat of an outsider even among her peers on the lower decks of a racially segregated generation ship, Asters life is already hard enough, trying to protect her mentally ill former lover and now best friend Giselle, healing people along with Theo, the bastard child of a higher decks general, avoiding the brutalizing raids. Then she finds new leads about the mysterious death of her mother, and is thrown into the power struggle among the white leaders.
This is not a light read. The discrimination and abuse Aster (and Giselle, and to an only slightly lesser extent Theo) faces, for being black, for being female, for being autistic, for being bi and nonbinary is incredibly intense and the book painfully shows every bit of it. Still, the world felt vivid and real, and Aster is a quite unique heroine. I also felt quite seen in her as a bi autistic woman.4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mia Wiedemann – Sternenschimmer (Kim Winter)
Optimistic and kind, Mia wants to help in a refugee hostel for the refugees of an civil war on the planet Loduun. She falls in love with Iason, a cold and stern refugee still traumatized from the war, but soon tension between humans and aliens rise, and also the conflicts of the civil war follow the refugees to earth.
More a love story than a dystopian, Sternenschimmer still captured my heart as a teen because it managed to describe how vulnerable and strange and painful first love feels quite well. The worldbuilding is also quite vivid, and I like the humor.5
Also sorry that I don't have more queer heroines, except for Aster, none of them are canonically queer, even if Tally and Shay do seem to be bi, but aren't actually canonically confirmed. Bought another book with a queer heroine, but it turned out to not actually be dystopian.
(trigger warnings below the line)
1 trigger warnings: eating disorders, beauty culture, body dysmorphia, ableism, major trigger warning for the characters in the second and third book massively glorifying self harm and eating disorders and this not being handled particularly well
2 trigger warnings: rape, dehumanization, euthanisia, cannibalism, in the movie: yellowface and blackface. The setting of her story in South Korea could also play into the “cyberpunk orientalism” trope
3 trigger warnings: viruses and germs, child harm, could also possibly play into the noble s*vage trope
4 quite a lot, this book is very heavy and brutal: Most of all racism, police brutality, rape, slavery, ableism, medical gore, depictions of severe mental illness, suicide
5 I am white and not a refugee, so I am not sure about the details, but this surely glosses over a lot of the refugee experience, and also possibly paints some refugees as more dangerous than they are in reality. Also Iason can be somewhat controlling, and its not handled very well. Trigger warnings: mind control, violence (not particulary graphic), in the following books: suicide, mental illness.

Hi Christina!
I’m traveling to Málaga, Spain in a couple of weeks and I have a lot of anxiety because this is my first time traveling to a foreign country. I vaguely remember that you visited Spain, but I was wondering if you can share any advice such as your favorite / must haves travel essentials, how to enjoy your time yet be budget friendly? Not too interested in doing touristy stuff but I heard the beaches are nice? Do you recommend staying at an Airbnb, hotel, hostel, or a capsule hotel? Would love to hear your recommendations! Also, any followers of Christina’s can chime in as well, much appreciated. Thank you in advanced.
That's so exciting! I bet you're going to have the best time. I've never been to Málaga before, but I have been to Spain and I solo travel a fair amount, so I'll tell you what I know.
Starting with where to stay, a hostel will be your most budget-friendly option. The average price of a hotel in Malaga is around $101 USD per night, while hostels can go as low as $20 USD per night. Hostels are also better in terms of meeting people, since they tend to be full of young travelers looking to make friends. Just make sure that the hostel has good reviews and is located in a safe area. TOC hostel seems like a popular choice. As far as Airbnbs go, they tend to be around the price of a hotel and come with their own rules and regulations. They're a great option if you're working while staying somewhere long-term and want to get a sense of what it's like to live there, but other than that I would skip them.
As far as how to enjoy your time, it really depends on what you like. I'll typically see if Conde Nast Traveller has articles on the places I'm going (here and here), then I'll do a search on Reddit to see what people like, and I also check out Atlas Obscura to see if there are any weird or interesting attractions around. I love museums, so I usually check out which ones are in the city. You can also Google something like "best free things to do in Malaga" and you'll get a whole list. I would maybe check out the Picasso Museum or the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which are free on Sundays, the Contemporary Art Centre of Malaga, which is always free, the Museum of Malaga, the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro Castle, stroll along the Puerto de Malaga and Paseo Maritimo, and go to the Malaga Botanical Garden. If you like food and you want to save some money on eating out, going to one of the markets could also be a really nice activity. Grocery stores are also your friend if you're looking to save some money- I like getting some picnic supplies and then going to sit in a park or on the beach. I would maybe also look to see if there are any tours you would be interested in or a class you might want to take in something that's unique to Malaga. For example, when I was in Iceland, I did a ride through a lava field on an Icelandic pony, which was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and super fun. Finding things like that that are really unique can help to make your trip more memorable. Tours can also help you connect with other travelers, which is great if you're on your own and maybe feel a little lost. Just wandering around the city can also be a great activity in itself and help you figure out what you want to see or do.
For travel essentials, I think people will try to sell you on all sorts of gadgets, but I don't really travel with that many things that are out of the ordinary. I'm in Greece now, and the travel items I brought with me are a universal power adapter and packing cubes. If you're going to stay at a hostel, I would recommend getting a good pair of earplugs (I like the Loop ones, but honestly any of them are fine), an eye mask, and maybe a portable lock box for your valuables (this is also useful if you want to go to the beach without worrying that your stuff will get stolen). If you're staying on your own, I usually travel with a doorstop alarm, but that's really for my own peace of mind- I've never actually needed it. Other than that, I try to carry a few different types of medications with me in case I need them, and I try to have long enough charging cables so that they'll reach regardless of where I am, but that's pretty much it. If you don't speak the language of the place you're going, the Google Translate app is a good thing to download because it can scan written text and translate it in real time. I would also check to see what the public transportation looks like and if you need to download any additional apps for that.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but please feel free to send in follow up questions! Mostly, just go into it with an open mind and try to have fun. The unexpected parts of a trip are often the best parts.

5, 6, 9, 21, 23 and 37 (I'm p sure those were it, I'm on mobile shshdh)
Thank you! Music asks
5. Top 3 played songs?
1. Disposable Fix by The Plot In You
2. I Love You, I’m Trying by grandson
3. Atlas by Friday Pilots Club
(From on repeat)
1. Endless Riots by Reece young, cane hill
2. Sugar honey ice & tea by BMTH
3. Blood Sport ftrb by Sleep Token
(From short term)
1. Kingdom of Cards by Bad Omens
2. Nazareth by Sleep Token
3. IDWT$ by Bad Omens
(From medium term)
1. ego death by Polyphia ft Steve Vai
2. Granite by sleep token
3. My love mine all mine by mitski
(From long term)
In my own opinion:
1. blood sport (both versions) from sleep token
2. Disposable fix from the plot in you
3. Fade by holywatr
6. Three favorite genres of music?
So. The quintessential question is: what is a genre? I mean? I guess I tend to go towards rock and some subgenres(?) of metal/metalcore at the moment?
Looking at wrappeds: modern rock, modern alternative rock, pop; pop, modern alternative rock, alt z; pop, modern rock, metal core; dance pop, modern alternative rock, video game music
So. I guess I’ll choose Modern (alternative?) rock, pop, and metalcore?
9. Favorite concert you’ve attended?
Favourite with another person was Noah Kahan that I went to with my cousin (in place of the sister bc she had a cheer thing come up) and it was the perfect venue with seats and dancing and good drinks (only venue I’ve been able to just buy a glass of pineapple juice at! And I love going back to this one :)) and was such an amazing little trip we had together! (Literally we were in the hostel trying to learn one song ahead of the show bc it was the sister who wanted to go and so I was going to take her) I think this was the Busyhead tour :)
On my own: …this has to be split into smaller or larger venue.
For a larger venue: either Sleep Token or Halestorm/Volbeat. Truly astounding~ both sound even better (somehow) live (ok can’t really speak for volbeat I don’t listen to them as much and only started after seeing them)
For a smaller venue: probably grandson (even though physically I was Suffering and was unsure if I’d even make it there) or maybe Finger Eleven bc it was my very first and hooked me to continue going to concerts :)
21. A song that needs to play loud?
Hmmm. So. I. Hmm.
So I have. Possible slight hearing loss from mostly being in food service my entire working life BEEPS AND ALARMS GALORE (coming up on a decade pretty soon) and probably the damn fog horn from sailing. But at the same time im very sensitive?? Like when I use headphones or earbuds it’s almost always on the quietest volume I can have it on and even then it’s sometimes too loud/intense. I’ve fiddled with both lowering all the EQ in Spotify and in my phone’s Audio Settings to get it a bit quieter. (Like the health app says it’s ~48 decibels instead of 60-62 for when I have headphones connected.) something something I wish it was acceptable to wear earplugs freaking everywhere. But in fresh food we aren’t allowed bc it could “fall out into the food” (and also customer service) (I have so many pairs. Some of which would NOT fall out. The others I haven’t opened yet :P) (I don’t blame concert going for this on account of wearing earplugs. But. Anyway)
All that to say: I don’t usually change the volume (at least consciously) for specific songs?
Actually.
Hmmm let me think if I turn the volume up in the car if I’m driving and a song comes on.
Any song that has a breakdown or a section I love to sing along with 💖
But even so I tend to mostly turn music up when I’m on the highway and there’s more background noise and down at slower speeds. This goes for if there’s a lot of background noise when I’m listening to music at home or on the bus/walking too.
Or: perhaps: Sleep Token’s Rain bc I hadn’t heard the scream there until I turned it way up on the highway home one drive bc I was previously like “so nice of them to give IV an additional screamy part 🥰 “ and then it was. Wait. Maybe it’s in the original song too. And uh. Turns out it was. (I doubled the volume to notice it the first time 😬)
Though I will fully admit that if im in a mood and need the music to surround my very essence I will turn it up regardless of ambient noise levels. The MULTIPLE drives home where im screaming along to Blood Sport on loop are fucking unreal 😬
23. A song by an artist with a voice that you love?
Admission: if I don’t love your voice, or at least find it pleasant, *most* of the time im not going to listen to what you’re singing.
Dynasty by Rina Sawayama is the first that came to mind.
Make Me Wanna Die by The Pretty Reckless
Jaws Sleep Token
Welcome to the Show Adam Lambert
Millie Warm the Kettle Rabbitology
27. A song that has many meanings to you?
…so many…
There’s Blame Candy’s Pathetic (which I haven’t been able to listen to for years bc it wasn’t healthy for me at that point)
(Literally most of Sleep Token and Bad Omens and The Plot In You’s discography tbh)
Mayhaps Northlane’s Clockwork.

marvel's runaways season 3 episode 10. god. what did they do to my boy indeed. LONG RAMBLE UNDER CUT @loganschwarzy
so some context, the second to last episode, there's a big fight one of them dies (gert). and so the very next episode (last of the show), is a time jump. 3 years after gert's death (2021 or 2022). for simplicity, these the 3 year runaways
nico left immediately after gert died, she blamed herself and her powers and lived in isolation to improve and keep the others safe.
karolina is heartbroken for some time, and waits 2 years until moving on. she's goes to ucla and i think is studying psych (with a minor in arts in my heart), she has a gf, julie. who is played by billie eilish's sister in law (yk). she's thriving. her hair is short now.
molly is a senior at atlas and she's cheer captain!! younger kids look up to her and she lives with old lace and chase at the hostel still.
alex (my favourite ever, have i told you that) works with his dad at his tech/engineering company? he's thriving, he's in his element. he's smiling. he works with chase to help him with his time travel. he and the others have karaoke nights.
chase. has doubled in within himself after gert died. he rarely comes out of his room. he rarely leaves the hostel. molly wishes he would spend more time with her, she already lost her big sister, she doesn't wanna lose her brother either. he is shut himself in and thrown himself into inventing time travel.
with alex's help and also the abstract, it takes another 7 years but he does. he invents time travel. for love. he says a really good line abt it. ask again some other time, i'll have it.
now in these seven years, outside. someone in the group tries to blow up alex's office at his work. he survives. but he grows to start hating the others and becomes hell bent on getting revenge. although, there is no proof as to who did it, it apparently was someone in the group. these alex and chase are 10 years runaways.
so just as chase is abt to go back in time to save gert, alex steals one his two time watches and goes back to the day nico reunites with the group. (that same day we meet the 3 year future runaways.) evil alex tries to kill alex but, she is so much better at her powers and stops him. pretty damn easily. and he runs off. 10y chase is close behind and he and 3y nico group up with the others.
chase finds out that 10y alex is gonna use julie to get to karo. and they all group up at karo's apartment. and then 10y alex runs off to go try to mess up the runaways at the beginning of the show so they never get together. and the others follow after him. they find him on a bus. that the younger alex is getting on. and he's like what. i get contacts in the future?? he's so <3
they catch him and sit him down. and then they all agree to go back and save gert. they send 3y alex to the star wars hotel to keep him away bc 2 alexs is complicated. and they go to save gert but alex gets knocked out or smth. he doesn't get brought up again. and then they all disappear.
it's he incredibly confusing bc like. the only possible explanation for him being evil is the magistrate's son is still possessing him. but if that was the case, 3y alex would've also shown signs of evilness. which he does not. and also. 10y alex. isn't entire evil. in fact. the way he quietly listens and reacts to the others at times heavily looks like he still cares abt them so so much. he's just really hurt. but the way he looks at deanoru while they're having their angsty relationship talks is so so soft and loving. for someone who is evil and wants to kill them.
so yeah!! 3 alexs. my boy.

5 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga: A Captivating Adventure
Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ouarzazate My 5 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga began after breakfast, as we set off towards Ouarzazate via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The journey through the High Atlas mountains was breathtaking, offering remarkable views of Berber villages. The highlight of the day was visiting the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After a delightful lunch by the Kasbah, we continued to Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Africa." Here, I had the chance to explore film studios where movies like "Gladiator" and "The Sahara" were filmed. We spent the night in a charming riad, complete with dinner and breakfast.
Day 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Boutghrar – Dades Valley After breakfast in the riad, we ventured into the Dades and Rose Valleys. Our first stop was Skoura, where I wandered through the Birds Valley and visited the Ameridil Kasbah. We then traveled to Kalaa M’gouna, famous for its rose fields and rose products. The journey continued through the road of a thousand Kasbahs, providing ample opportunities for beautiful photographs. We visited Boutghrar, meeting Berber families living in caves. After a traditional Berber lunch, we arrived at the Dades Gorge, marveling at the "Monkey Toes" rock formation and the Ait Yul Kasbah. We spent the night in a traditional Berber guesthouse, enjoying dinner and breakfast.
Day 3: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga Today, after breakfast, we drove towards Tinrghir and the Todra Valley, admiring the panoramic views of old Berber villages. At the Todra Gorge, I walked under the towering 300-meter cliffs, popular with rock climbers. After lunch, we reached Merzouga, where my camel awaited. Welcomed with mint tea and a desert scarf, I embarked on a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. That night, I slept under the stars in a traditional Berber nomad tent, an unforgettable experience on this tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.
Day 4: Merzouga – Draa Valley We woke before dawn to witness the stunning sunrise. After returning to the hostel for breakfast and a shower, we visited the market in Rissani, a bustling hub for desert nomads. Next, we explored the fossilized marble factory in Erfoud before heading towards the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad. Arriving at the Todra Gorges, I was amazed by the vertical walls formed by the Todra River. After lunch and a tranquil walk through the gorges, we continued to the Dades Valley, spending the night in a guesthouse nestled in the Dades Gorges, with dinner and breakfast included.
Day 5: Draa Valley – Marrakech Our final day started with breakfast and a visit to the cinema studios in Ouarzazate, often referred to as the Hollywood of Africa. We then explored the Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site and filming location for numerous movies like "Indiana Jones" and "Lawrence of Arabia." After a leisurely stroll through this historic site, we continued through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The end of the road?
Every road comes to an end, doesn’ t it?.
Towards the end of my time in Asia I wanted to keep going.
The more people I met who told me what routes they were taking I wanted to keep on the road.
But I had a ticket home.
So I finished up in Kuala Lumpur and flew to London where I stayed in a hostel above a pub for a couple of days.
The hostel was mostly full of backpackers, Japanese, Americans, and an assortment of other nationalities.
So, I went home for Christmas.
England was cold the minute I stepped off the plane, I knew Ireland would the same.
Compared to Malaysia they were arctic!
So, what would I do, would I go travelling again?, or retire from life on the road?
I sat down with my atlas and set out a few options, India, overland from Ireland ; Africa, top to bottom ; and many other routes besides.
In the end I settled on Europe, my own back yard.
Of course I know Europe but there are many parts of it that I don ’t know so I ’ve set off on my travels allovertheworld to Sweden.

CHAPTER 10: A series of small defeats
Enjoy! This is a long chapter so be ready for that if you hit read more. Check out my pinned post for an index + link to A03.
Tumblr media
Although the town was split on Killian’s legitimacy, there was one thing that everyone in town agreed upon: if Atlas stepped foot near his hut, something was wrong.
Atlas was nothing if not stubborn and his hard-headed nature was well known amongst the townsfolk. Call it bias, call it well-earned treatment, nobody liked him much. He wasn’t especially kind, though he was often helpful, and wasn’t known to be the warmest of personalities. There was an edge, an abrasiveness that was always at the ready. He navigated the world with an underlying paranoia guiding every word and hope. Nobody, not even his siblings felt truly at ease in his presence. The Atlas that had a vote in how resources were allocated, the Atlas who maintained the perimeter, the Atlas who kept track of trade...the town accepted his shortcomings without fuss. He got the job done. He did his job well. That’s what mattered. Never mind that Atlas was often right. If he proposed an idea, it usually worked. If he took issue with a concept, he broke it apart piece by piece, until everyone understood where it fell short. And often, if the town decided to do something he disliked, after a while he got to utter a phrase that hammered in his foresight: I said that would happen. Nobody was particularly fond of him, but everyone relied on him.
Except for Killian. Killian was uniquely fond of Atlas. Nobody understood why.
When Atlas went to Killian, people paid attention. Killian’s legitimacy as a priest was often in flux, but he was there when you needed him...and people needed him when things went wrong. When mistakes were made. When they needed a shot at justifying themselves or gaining clarity on something they did. The folks who visited Killian consistently, they were brushed off. Deemed nervous and silly.
Atlas however? He constituted neither.
If he was at Killian’s door, something was under his skin.
Thus, the moment Killian ushered him in, gossip erupted. Atlas didn’t hear it, but he had spotted people eyeing him as he made his way over to the ugly little corner of town Killian called home. He disliked the emptiness. Disliked how the hut had only a cot, a table, two chairs. Disliked the way there was a constant humming from the nearby hives.
“What brings you, Atlas?” Killian asked.
“Naivara,” he said. He didn’t sit; he didn’t feel like it, and in truth, hoped he’d be able to acquire a berry and take his leave altogether. “You know the drill.”
“Female hysteria,” Killian said. “Yes, yes I do.”
“It’s escalated,” Atlas said. “She sabotaged me. Left the basement unlocked and we got robbed.” He thought to himself that tomorrow he would have a rug delivered to Killian. One of the big, bright ones that were bound up, collecting dust at Sutero hostel. “I did something.”
“Go on.”
“I wanted to frighten her into behaving,” Atlas said. “Set her straight. Make her register that her decisions had consequences. I sent her into the forest with Mallory.”
“Alone?” Killian asked in disbelief.
“No, no,” Atlas said. “In a group. It was meant to last a day, I didn’t tell her that of course, it would have botched the message, but they aren’t back.”
Killian was at a loss. At the back of his mind, his ancestor roared in approval. The rest of his mind was utterly numb. In all his years, he hadn’t dealt with something so utterly, unfathomably abhorrent. If Naivara returned, her pain would appease his ancestor like nothing else ever had before. A dreamless sleep was within reach. An end to the constant gnawing at his mind. So long as she came back.
“I don’t know what to do,” Atlas said. “I can’t undo this. Something went wrong. I know it.”
“Of course,” Killian said. “That choice of discipline carried many risks.”
“I don’t know what to do,” Atlas said. “I’m afraid, Killian.”
“Who wouldn’t be?” Killian said. “It’s only natural to be concerned about a loved one in the forest.”
“I need something to take the edge off,” Atlas said. He waited for Killian to offer up a berry. He craved the savory, sweet crunch of it between his teeth. Killian stroked his chin, silent.
“Bring me a mirror,” Killian said. “And I will find her.”
“The only mirror I’ve got is at the Grove,” Atlas said. “Meet me there.”
The man left, and Killian dawdled. People would run their mouths otherwise. When he left, he spoke to old Mr. Brickson, who was sour as could be. They discussed his chickens, and how the eggs haven’t been the same since Atlas stole Naivara. Stole. It irked Killian to hear that word. Like the man hadn’t kicked her out. As Mr. Brickson spoke, Killian’s headache faded.
At the Grove, Atlas let him upstairs. Killian always felt a gentle buzz upstairs. Kallisto was a morose girl and her sorrow chilled the air. Naivara was the same, though her hurt was different. Like a cold shadow. Atlas wasn’t the type to wallow, but he hurt all the same. All the time. Killian could count on his Ancestor feeling content around Atlas. No aches. No sore eyes or throbbing teeth.
Atlas led Killian to his room. A large mirror sat propped against the wall.
“There,” Atlas said. “That’s it.”
“Do you have an item of hers?” Killian asked. “It may help with the scry.”
Atlas spent a short while hunting for items that belonged to Naivara. The closet was mostly his things. Shirts, pants, gear. What belonged to Naivara consisted of hand-me-downs that Kallisto had given her. He sifted through the jewelry but most of it was the type that gave her blisters. There were earrings she didn’t wear and bracelets she never touched, and there came a point where Atlas stared down at everything he had given her and registered just how useless it all was.
“A hair will do,” Killian said. “If nothing else.”
Atlas reached for the brush on her bedside. Killian watched him tear hairs out and toss them in a bin.
“Naivara isn’t blonde.”
“I’m aware,” Atlas said. “Mind your own.”
“Atlas,” Killian said. “Don’t tell me you’ve been cheating on the girl.”
“Then I won’t,” Atlas said. “Here.” He offered up several strands of dark, curly hair. Killian took the hair, frowning. A part of him knew better than to pry, but shame was a tantalizing thing.
“How long?” Killian asked. Atlas rubbed at his neck.
“Not long. Not much.”
“You’re marrying her,” Killian said.
“I’m aware.”
“Couldn’t she have satisfied you?”
“Her?” Atlas scoffed. “Look at her. She’s sexless.” Shame. Whistling like a tea kettle. Ancestor frothed at the mouth and Killian felt a very slight euphoria. He could use this. He could use this.
“This is why she’s hysterical,” Killian said.
“What?” Atlas asked.
“Listen closely,” Killian said. “Women are designed for sex. Their bodies are meant for birthing. The womb craves sex, the womb needs sex. Much like how a heart pumps blood or lungs breath air, a womb needs sex.”
Instant revulsion. Instant disappointment. His ancestor cackled in delight. Killian knew it was reckless, but he sifted through Atlas’ mind for a moment, dipping his fingers in the current.
Thoughts were peculiar. Some were abstract. Some were clear and sharp. Atlas’ thoughts were a slurry of disdain, churning, roiling, transforming, trapped. Shame percolated beneath the surface. Shame. Disgust. What a rarity. Killian touched it and Atlas’ tail cracked, swinging sharply from side to side. Killian rolled the truth around in his mouth, savoring the way it melted against his tongue.
Atlas worried he’d be soft. That he’d out himself as truly, completely, totally disinterested. Or worse. Inept.
“Could we hurry up and scry on her?”
Killian obliged. He stood before the mirror and set a single finger against the left-most corner. As he dragged his finger to the right, a shimmer dripped down in rivulets, distorting the reflection. Killian sat down cross-legged, opened up the palm that cradled Naivara’s hair and blew. The hair tumbled forward and collided with the mirror. It glowed a pale white, akin to lightning, then began to writhe. The mirror shimmered, pearlescent, then trembled.
“Killian?” Atlas said. “Killian it won’t explode on us, will it?”
The euphoria came to a grinding halt. There was no pain. A breeze tickled Killian’s skin, delicate and kind. Then he felt drenched in cold.
A pale figure glowered back at him. Two butterflies framed her eyes. She was a rainbow of a person, caught between sunlight and storm. She shook her head and disappeared. The mirror turned pitch black.
“That wasn’t Naivara,” Atlas said. “She was looking atus. Killian. Killian who was that?”
“A fae,” he said.
“A fae?” Atlas asked. “A fae? Why didn’t we see Naivara?”
“It’s taken her in,” Killian said.
“Is that it?” Atlas asked. “Is that all? Where is she? Where are the others?”
“I don’t know,” Killian said, his head aching. “I don’t know, Atlas. I can’t say.”
“Do it again.” “I can’t,” Killian said, tears spilling from his eyes. “I can’t. I can’t.”
“What am I supposed to do?” Atlas asked. “If you’ve done it once you can do it again-” “If you’re so desperate for magic,” Killian said, pushing to his feet. “Go to Mason. He might be of use. Do you have any pacci?”
“A bit,” Atlas said.
“I need it,” Killian said, his arms throbbing. “I need it.”
Atlas dug through the closet and unearthed a vial. Killian swiped it out of his hand and drank it greedily, hunting for a semblance of relief from Ancestors fit of rage.
“You need to get out of here,” Atlas said. Killian agreed, and stumbled all the way home. There he entered a home he didn’t like, breathed in air that smelled like crap, listened to insects that made his skin crawl, laid in a cot that always hurt his back, and found a semblance of peace.

At night, Sistine’s looked downright romantic. The windows glowed faintly, like the remnants of a fire. The porch was always a pretty sight, but when the Bloom came around, the pots of flowers bloomed to their fullest and butterflies laid claim to the bannisters. They twitched and tumbled, weighing down plants as they huddled together against flowers. Some settled for the vines that crawled up the side of the building, others rested against the roof.
Atlas could appreciate it, but he never liked the smell of the place. The fragrance was overwhelming and made his nostrils tingle unpleasantly. The smell was the least of his concerns tonight. No matter how he approached this, it would be uncomfortable.
Ethan gave him shit the moment he arrived. He was propped up beside the door, glowering at him with a vengeance.
“You aren’t welcome here,” Ethan said. “And we’re wrapping up.”
“I need to speak to Clarice,” Atlas said.
“The answer is no,” Ethan said. “Excuse yourself.”
Atlas glanced in, hunting for blonde locks. Ethan sidestepped into view, blocking him.
“I need to speak with Clarice,” Atlas said.
“Well I’m not moving.” “Then I’ll wait right here,” Atlas said. Inside, he could already discern unease.
After a short while, Clarice appeared. Ethan motioned for her to go but she didn’t listen, shoving her way onto the porch.
“What do you want?” She asked.
“I need to talk to you,” Atlas said. “Alone.”
“That’s a no,” Ethan said. “A big no. Clarice, Treasure will-”
“Ethan can you do me a solid and just go?” She asked. “For two minutes?” He grit his teeth, then retreated inside. Then Clarice looked at him, enraged.
“Where is he?” She asked. “He showed up out of the blue and said he was going to be gone. He said it would be a day.”
“I have the exact same concern,” Atlas said.
“Get to the point.”
“I need an object of Mallory’s,” Atlas said. “Hair. A bracelet. Anything. I need to check in on him.”
“So you did do this,” Clarice said. “You sent him on some fools errand into the forest-”
“Testing me will come back to bite you,” Atlas warned.
Clarice clenched her fists.
“I’m not giving you anything,” Clarice shot. “Not unless you can bring him home.”
“I’ll do that,” Atlas said. “I will. I just need to know where he is first.”
“How?” Clarice asked. “How will you bring him home?”
“I’ll summon Mahog,” Atlas said. “The moment I know where he is, I’ll flag her down and he’ll be back before you can so much as ask when. I promise.”
Treasure made herself known. She shoved the doors open and positioned herself neatly between Atlas and Clarice, motioning for her to go inside. Treasure was one of a handful of individuals in town who could look down on him. He despised it.
“Go upstairs,” Treasure said. “Now.”
“Treasure-”
“Go.”
Atlas watched Clarice retreat indoors.
“Bit much,” he said. “Don’t you think?”
“Not for you,” Treasure said. “Isn’t it exhausting, Atlas? Juggling all the moving parts? You have a fiancé.”
“This isn’t about Naivara.”
“How is she?” Treasure asked. “Is she doing any better?”
“No,” Atlas said flatly. “She’s sick as a dog.”
“I should visit.”
“After slapping my sister?” Atlas asked. “I should ban you from the Grove altogether. Actually, I’ve decided to do it. Let’s me get Sloan involved if you test me.”
Treasure glowered at him. From above, an item tumbled into the road.
“Goodbye,” Atlas said.
Treasure watched him snatch the item up with his tail as he walked off.
She sensed that he had won and she hated it.

Things were looking bleak. Mason whispered an occasional hello to the flower. If Naivara heard him, she was most certainly punishing him. He couldn’t entertain the thought that she’d lost the flower. It was a possibility that rattled around in his mind most unpleasantly, and laid the foundation for worse concepts. Things like her tearing it up in a fit of rage, or someone else tearing it up, or it being stolen. He chose to believe she was just giving him the silent treatment, because venturing into the realm of more serious possibilities was something he simply did Not Want To Do.
He twirled the flower between his fingers.
“I found a green charm in the basement,” he whispered. “It belongs to a girl from Sistine’s. I’m wondering if maybe she did something down there.”
Silence. Per the usual.
“I wish you would just talk to me,” he said. “It would be nice to hear your voice.”
Knock Knock Knock.
“Mason,” Atlas called. “Open up.”
Mason tucked the flower in his pocket and dragged a hand down his face.
“Minute,” he called.
He opened the door and there stood Atlas. The man was warm as ever, and said little more than he needed Mason’s assistance upstairs. Mason agreed (mostly on the off-chance he’d get to see Mr. Goldenholi, who had been taken upstairs after an incident) and away they went. Atlas ushered Mason into a room, then gestured to a large vanity. Mason suspected the room belonged to Kallisto. It had random vestiges and bras scattered about the space. He felt like an intruder.
“I need you to scry on someone for me,” Atlas said. He extended a palm and held out a bracelet constructed of small wooden charms. Mason took it, somewhat confused.
“Alright,” he said. He took the bracelet and held it out, circling his arm. The mirror grew foggy and pearlescent. Mason wiped the fog away with his palm, and Atlas shoved him aside.
A group of three. A drow, a human, and an orc. They were silent and somber, wandering the woods intently.
“Thank you,” Atlas said. “That’s all I needed to know. You can go.” He glanced offhandedly at Mason, then paused. He looked Mason up and down, clearly perplexed.
“What?” Mason asked, offering Atlas the bracelet. He took it and dropped it in his pocket, frowning.
“You look mopey.” Atlas asked. “I’d expect someone making good money to look a bit less demoralized. You should use that money to have a good time.”
“I don’t know where I’d spend it.” Mason stuffed his hands in his pockets and prayed for the conversation to end. Kinda hard to have a good time when he was constantly wondering about where Naivara was. How Mr. Goldenholi was doing...that damn charm that burned a hole in his pocket.
“Well there’s always Sistine’s,” Atlas said. “Easy fun there. You should keep an eye on Eastgate. They have a Sutero caravan due and they love the Bloom. When they celebrate, nobody sleeps.”
“Thanks,” Mason said. “Cool. Can I go to the washroom?”
Atlas waved him off and Mason wandered out into the hall. Quiet as could be, he opened a door and peered inside. The room was small and bare, save for a bed and wardrobe. He shut the door silently and approached a different one. This room was larger. The bed was plush. There was a broken window. Mason smirked and shut the door.
One door left. He opened it and peered in.
There he was! Mason hurried in, shutting the door silently as he could.
“Hey,” Mason said. “Mr. Goldenholi, I got news-”
“That my daughter isn’t really sick?” Savan asked. “That she’s with fae?”
“How-”
“Treasure.”
“Ah. Well here.” Mason opened up his palms and two flowers burst into existence, small, with white petals. “Take this, if you speak to it you speak to me. I have to go, I’m already pushing my luck.”
Savan nodded miserably. Mason shut the door and jolted at the sight of Atlas.
“I don’t appreciate snoops,” Atlas said.
“I just wanted to check in-”
“Right. I’m going to make something very clear,” Atlas said. “You don’t think about the Goldenholi’s. You don’t worry about the Goldenholi’s. Understood?”
“I consider Mr. Goldenholi a friend.”
“That is grand,” Atlas said. “What do you consider Naivara?”
“A friend.”
“Right,” Atlas said. “I don’t. Friendships aren’t forged overnight. Let me remind you that we have a clear cut business relationship. Don’t mingle with my bride to be, Mason.”
Mason wanted to be clever. He wanted to say something bold or witty.
Instead, he said, “Okay,” and Atlas let him leave in one piece.

Far, far away, Naivara struggled to eat pancakes.
It wasn’t that they tasted bad. The issue was Lillimae. She had every right to snap on her and wasn’t doing it. Was this a kindness? Was it tolerance? There were others in this house. Maybe Lillimae was putting on a show. Maybe she just respected her house-mates too much too compromise the peace.
Her stomach rumbled. The pancakes looked delectable. Flaky, golden discs that seemed to glimmer in the morning light. She cut each piece of pancake, despising every painfully slow motion. Naivara resisted the urge to eat them with her hands. As a kid, she ate them like tortillas. Rolled them up and dipped them in butter and honey. Atlas never liked that habit. He said it was childish and unsanitary. Then she lifted every bite to her mouth and tried not to think about how much better it would be to eat the way she did as a child: freely.
Lillimae ate with her hands. Tore pancakes into chunks, then dragged them through syrup. Raised it to her mouth, let her fingers become shiny and sweet.
“You wake up early,” Lillimae said. “Eudora and Irene sleep in. They like to be lazy. I’m not saying that in a mean way though, they just like to rest. They start their day when they feel like it.” She licked clean her fingers. “I think you’ll like it here.”
“I’m not staying,”
Lillimae paused. A chunk of pancakes hovered inches from her lips. Syrup dribbled off it, glimmering as it caught the morning light.
“Okay,” Lillimae said. “Well. You’ll enjoy your stay.”
“How long am I going to be here for?” Naivara asked.
“That’s going to depend on Celastrina,” Lillimae said, dropping the chunk of pancake back on her plate.
“Is she one of the women from last night?”
“You haven’t seen her.”
“When will she be back?”
“I don’t know. She’s fae. She does what she likes.” Lillimae grabbed her plate and chucked it over her shoulder. It tumbled through the air and fell into a bin. Naivara anticipated the sound of ceramic shattering, instead the plate burst into existence on a countertop, squeaky clean. Naivara stared in disbelief.
“Fae?”
“Fae. The good kind.”
“There are no good fae,” Naivara said.
“Now that is what we call a generalization,” Lillimae said. “I’ve been dying to use that word. Celastrina said it once and it’s been rattling around in my mind since.” “Can we go back to the food thing?”
“What about it?”
“Am I stuck here?”
Once, her father had told her a story about a siren who tempted a prince out into the ocean. When he grew hungry, she offered him sea-grass. The prince ate it without a second thought, but in doing so, he couldn’t go home. The furthest he could go was the beach. Naivara wasn’t quite sure about what an ocean looked like, nor a beach, so she imagined a vast and deep swamp. The concept frightened her all around.
“No,” Lillimae said. “Celastrina doesn’t do that. She’ll be back by the end of the week and you’ll be whisked back to town before the Bloom ends.”
“Good,” Naivara said. “Good. Is it possible to speed that up at all?”
“Celastrina is hard to get a hold of,” Lillimae said. “She isn’t like you or me, Naivara. She’s fae. She does what she likes when she feels like it. She knows your here and will visit soon, just...not now.”
“I need to get home.”
“You will get home,” Lillimae said dryly. “Just be patient.”
Naivara couldn’t imagine spending a week like this. Lillimae, doing little more than tolerating her. Maybe Naivara would lock herself upstairs and make do. Avoid this awkward, ugly little thing.
“So,” Lillimae said. “How’s stuff in town?”
“Fine,” Naivara said.
“How’s your dad?”
“It’s complicated.”
“I have time,” Lillimae said.
Naivara said nothing. She picked at her plate and didn’t look up.
Lillimae waited expectantly. Gradually, her smile fell. Her eyebrows sharpened. Her eyes narrowed.
“You don’t want to talk to me,” she said. “Do you?”
“It’s complicated.”
“Right,” Lillimae said. “It always is with you. Can’t talk about why you’re out here, can’t talk about your dad, can’t talk about anything. I was stupid to expect anything else from you. Do me a favor and mind your own during your visit.”
Her chair scraped against the floor. She stormed upstairs. Shortly after, a door slammed shut.
Naivara lost her appetite.
