First AU Pro Hoops game was fun! Lexie Brown was tearing it up, and I also loved watching Taj Cole - super bouncy and energetic. #TeamRussell for the win!
Also, mad props to Kiki for playing at 3 months post-partum. It took me close to a year after giving birth to feel like running again, so that shit is mad impressive.
Next game is too late for a work night 😛, but looking forward to more!

sy was born poorer than poor and spent his formative years watching his grandmother do her very best to keep the dust from coating everything in their ramshackle little trailer in oklahoma .
his mother wasn’t around much . after running away to chase after one band or another and coming home with her waistline significantly thickened , she didn’t much take to motherhood , not when running off to the nearest dive bar or casino to spend whatever meager paycheck she could scrounge up was just so tempting .
in fact , sy’s memories of her are often fleeting . she was a whirlwind of a woman , beautiful despite the hard life she led , but in and out the door too fast for him to ever really get to know her . and after some of his grandmother’s jewelry ended up in the pawn shop twenty miles up the road she didn’t come around the house anymore when she found the locks changed .
sy’s grandmother , affectionately known as nan , did her best to raise her grandson better than she had raised her daughter . though truth be told , the practice wasn’t much different , his mother had just been a bit of a bad seed .
religion and discipline were a staple and so every sunday found the pair walking to the church in their parish to give thanks and receive the blessing , a tradition that sy hasn’t kept up with since her death but i’m getting ahead of myself .
his nan made a modest living for where they lived , she wasn’t spoiling the boy but it was enough to put food on the table and get them to and from where they needed to go .
he had a few close friends in the neighborhood and they usually got together in the evenings to play whatever games they could , sometimes soccer with a ball that looked like you could put your foot through it , or basketball on the single hoop with no net that was somehow still standing in the local “ park ” . summers were spent walking down to the pond that passed for a swimming hole to get some sort of relief from the heat .
he picked up a job at one of the local motor shops to help with the bills , though his nan insisted he spend his time working on his schoolwork first . he’d still slip a portion of what he came home with into her purse when she wasn’t looking .
he played sports in school , their community doing what they could to scrounge up funds for a ramshackle team for each sport . he primarily ran track and cross country ( in a uniform that looked like it was straight out of an 80′s movie and felt like it too ) . he was a decent hurdler and the fact that he usually walked everywhere he needed to get gave his stamina a certain edge on the kids who were better off . but his true passion was baseball . sy could write poetry about the diamond , and most of the assignments he managed to turn in involved the sport somehow . ( he almost got caught cheating once when he turned in a paper that wasn’t about it but he’s always been lucky af )
their school team wasn’t anything special . they played with heart and had fun doing it but they were never going to make it to state with nothing short of a miracle even though it was clear sy ( and a couple of his buddies ) had the potential to be more than just has - beens who got stuck living in their hometown for the rest of their lives . during sy’s eighth grade year , his junior high team made a pretty valiant push and made it to the regional championship but they were simply out - spent by some of the other teams and came home disappointed .
someone must have recognized sy though , because a few weeks later a letter arrived from one of the elite baseball camps in the country stating that he had been sponsored to attend for the summer . his friends were excited for him and it was probably the best summer of his life , but tensions rapidly grew sour when he returned home , after all , none of them had been granted such an opportunity and they wondered what made him so special where they weren’t .
it certainly didn’t help that he got home and noticed their trailer was a little refurbished , they had a new ( ish ) television and a cable antenna on the roof without the pieces of foil sy had stuck to it at an attempt for better service . and then little gifts started to arrive here and there , new cleats , a better glove , all things with the sheen of wealth attached to them and all in the name of this new sponsor he seemed to have attracted . it didn’t go over well with his friends and he could see the jealous glint in their eyes which led sy to hide away the new treasures , or take them out back and absolutely destroy that gleam that came with new gear .
high school was not a time he wanted to spend ostracized , especially when everyone in town always looked back on it like it was the golden time of their youth before they settled down into the daily grind of adulthood . he was nothing short of angry and miserable , his loneliness that festered into rage finding a nice outlet in smashing his fists into the noses of whoever crossed his path or looked at him wrong .
it was around that time that a girl showed up on his doorstep , all knees and elbows and with a big smile insisting she was his sister . judging from the own sparkly state of her attire , sy managed to put two and two together as to just who his new sponsor was and promptly shut the door in her face . ( the fact that his mother had suddenly come out of the woodwork and ran into him around town on occasion to ask for money was another clue . she could sniff out money anywhere )
finnley buchanan was a revelation to him . persistent to the extent of climbing in through his window to press her point home until sy was forced to accept that this nonsense story she was spinning about his father and her mother had a certain ring of truth to it . he didn’t want a new family , he was content in his small town with his nan and his friends and everything would go back to normal just as soon as he tossed all his shiny new stuff in the trash .
his nan wasn’t having it , plain and simple . she wasn’t going to force him to reconcile with a father he had never known , but she certainly wasn’t going to allow him to pass up an opportunity to get out of their tiny little town . and so sy kept going to those baseball camps every year , and after keeping in touch with his new sister to a point where he was forced to accept the unlimited texting plan she forced upon him just so his nan would stop good naturedly grumbling about the amount of time he spent tying up their landline .
he’d spend a few weeks a year with her family , a holiday here and there , his eyes almost falling out of his eyes the first time he walked into a house with an honest to god foyer . he didn’t exactly see eye to eye with his new - found father and step mother and they didn’t seem to want to get to know him much beyond tossing money at a problem to solve it ( not that he allowed them to really know him )
he didn’t even accept their money for college , stubbornly insisting on getting in on his own merit . and thus shipped himself of to north carolina upon accepting a scholarship . the guitar skills he’d picked up in his lazy weeks spent with the buchanans and his classic good looks made him immensely popular which didn’t bode well for the state of his ego as we know it . between classes he managed to further perfect the art of binge drinking and beer pong and with his scholarship only covering tuition and board , he found himself employing his fists at night to earn some cash for incidentals . something that very nearly got him kicked out of school when he showed up to practice with a split lip and bruised knuckles a few times too many .
but luck was on his side and he was drafted after his sophomore year before they could start a more thorough investigation into his extra - extra - curriculars .
sy spent about a year working his way around the farm system of the minors while they tried to refine his issues before getting called up to play for the baltimore orioles . he played for them for about a year but after a run - in with one of the batting coaches that was rather hush hush he was unceremoniously traded to the los angeles dodgers .
˚ . ⊹ ┈ › 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 .
being a cusp baby, he kind of bounces back and forth between his moods . most of the time he’s all jokes and sarcasm . but catch him at the right time and he can be broody AF .
he is a lot smarter than he looks , but that’s an incredibly well kept secret because on the outside he is a Professional Idiot.
makes the worst decisions i have ever seen anyone make ever . highly impulsive and should never be allowed to give someone any sort of advice .
unless you’re asking what to put in your solo cup or if you’re craving a midnight snack . then he is 10 / 10 your guy .
he is incredibly loyal , so long as it serves his purpose . because at the end of the day he’s still an impulsive idiot and that devil on his shoulder made the angel tap out years ago .
bought his nan a new house with his signing bonus and sent her money to take care of her with what he had but since her death he’s doing his best to spend it on the dumbest shit possible and acting out in one way or another because he’s still a child .
tldr : he’s a piece of shit
˚ . ⊹ ┈ › 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 .
just going to add a little disclaimer that i am the biggest hoe for anything angsty and painful . i also love love love when people slide into my dms with a hc or two .
𝐞𝐱 - 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 ; for whatever reason there was a huge falling out and now things are just super awkward . half the time at parties they’re just on opposite sides of the room mean mugging each other until booze and tempers flare .
𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 ; these two were never supposed to be a thing . in fact , before this past summer they hardly ever spoke and when they did the discourse wasn’t exactly pleasant . but there’s a fine line between love and hate and all it took was a couple of drinks before the dynamic took a turn .
𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐬 ; i’d sell my soul for something that’s just angsty and messy . maybe they were at the point of saying the l word .
𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 ; all that sneaking around , taking the back doors in and out of places . meeting up in darkened corners 👌 👌 👌 that’s that shit i do like
𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 ; i’m such a sucker for a good bromance or two where the gc is just filled with memes and dragging each other up and down the wall . but at the end of the day they’re you’re boys and no one else can talk shit about them but you
𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬 ; a fwb here and there , the odd one night stand , someone who you just look at and want to punch them in the face for some inexplicable reason , an unrequited crush ( on either side )

Life, Death, & the heart and Seoul of gaming.
Throughout history we have adorned gamers. For millennia people have congregated together in the masses to watch people play. It brings us together, offers us a sense of belonging and shapes our identities. It is because we inherently are players ourselves. We grew up with an instinct to play and explore and this instinct helps us to understand the rules of life and society. Yet, as life and society begin to transform from being traditional analogue to a more digital structure, so do the games we play. The affordances of technology and social media are allowing us to watch, play and interact with gaming like never before. Humanity has come a long way since watching people rip each other apart at the Colosseum. Now we can rip each other apart in virtual reality, shoot hoops or score goals as our favourite heroes, even create our own life in hyper-real domains such as Second Life. The reality is that we all see gaming differently and while analogue games such as football or chess are positively stimulating for the body and mind, their is a definitive double-edged sword when it comes to digital gaming.
The world of digital gaming is a beast. It spans over every nation in the globe and is in almost everyone’s pocket. Gaming comes to life most in the South Korean city of Seoul. It is historically considered the epicentre of the digital gaming world. For years it has been home to events such as the world cyber games and is a true hub for new and upcoming gamers to showcase their skills. Seoul’s infrastructure provides its citizens with the world’s fastest internet connection and an extensively large wifi network which has helped to fortify itself as one of the worlds first “smart cities”. This means that everyone is connected to each other at all times, from your doorstep to your workplace. In many ways this is extremely beneficial as it provides citizens free and unlimited access to information, working towards the actualisation of an ideal public sphere. It also affords citizens the opportunity to utilise high-speed internet to play and compete in almost flag-free gaming conditions with extremely low ping. Such perfect conditions for connecting and playing with one another have produced an environment and culture synonymous with gaming.
Sometimes we push our sociality to it’s limits. The always-on nature of the internet has created a new type of gamer to the point where there has been a symbiosis between man and machine. Internet cafes have become the new parks and playgrounds. Gamers can now access a large network of competitive players where they can play for hours, days or weeks; basically as long as they want before something happens to stop play. Usually this is a disgruntled parent switching off the console, however there was one particular case in Seoul where a gamer died in his seat! What a way to go out! The fact is that digital gaming is highly addictive and can have some serious health benefits. So much so, that addiction clinics in Seoul that have traditionally been for drug and alcohol addiction have been re-designed to cater for the increasingly large influx of addicted gamers. One of the most addicting games that has blamed for negative behavioural change is Epic’s Fortnite. The structural format of the game allows players to engage in swiftly forming multiplayer game modes where there is basically no queue for the next game. There is essentially no pause button. This issue was exacerbated further when Fortnite crossed platforms from PS4, PC and Xbox over to Mobile. Addicts could not escape. There were even cases amongst some schools whereby the wi-fi was being strained due to the popularity of the game!
By looking at the past and present of gaming, there is no doubt that the future of gaming will be exciting. The aesthetic dimension combined with the notion of virtual reality gaming will take us to places where we can potentially live out very real fantasies. It is scary to think that these games could become so real that we cannot distinguish between what is and isn’t real. Would we eventually choose to the game over the real world? In some instances we already are with some players spending upwards of 12 hours a day practicing on League of Legends. Real or not, gaming greatly contributes to the way we act as people and will have huge implications on our culture in years to come. We may even see it in the Olympics with the birth of a new type of athlete.

91-6
When I was 13, I was a member of a fair to poor 8th grade girls’ basketball team. In Haven, KS, sports are something that gives kids an identity. Not academics, not music or band or debate team – smack in the middle of the Heartland, one’s ability to throw a ball into a hoop or tackle someone so hard that their brain bounces around inside their skull is the singular measuring stick with which popularity is gauged. Especially basketball. It’s the land of James Naismith for God’s sake.
The 8th grade girls’ roster was filled with all of my best friends, and we were all exactly alike back then: barely athletic, annoyed at everything in life, much more enthusiastic about food and boys and sneaking sips of Green Apple Pucker and Natural Light in our parents’ garages. We played basketball just because when you live in the middle of nowhere, it was something to do after school besides smoke cigarettes behind the gas station. We did that too, after practice. Our school’s 7th grade team was our nemesis. Yes, we wore the same name on the front of our jerseys, and we practiced against one another every single day, so of course we should’ve been supportive of them, but we hated those skinny, athletic brats. Naturally, they were undefeated and generally just the prize of the middle school. They were prettier, smarter, and dated all of the boys in our class, leaving us to gather at the lunch table and discuss how much we hated them while stuffing our faces with disgusting, Midwestern public school lunches of chicken fried steak with a side of lard gravy and unlimited buttered white rolls. The final game of the season was against Moundridge, a team notoriously good and, unbeknownst to us at the time, with one of the future best high school players in Kansas girls’ basketball history, and eventual WNBA star. You can see where this is going. An hour bus ride later, we arrived at the gym, changed into our uniforms and began the warm up routine of layups, three-man-weave and free throw drills. Down at the other end of the gym, the Moundridge team was running through similar exercises and honestly, looking very similar in ability to us. Okay, we got this! Two by two, our parents filed into the gym, setting up their very large VHS video cameras and finding the perfect spot for their tripods in between the cement bleachers. The 7th grade girls took their seats in the row behind our bench and they began cheering their cute, annoying little cheers as the starting five took the court. I jumped center (because at 5’7” I was the tallest girl, not because I had any sort of vertical whatsoever). The ball bounced to a girl on the other team named Laurie Koehn – a name forever burned in my brain – who immediately ran it down the court for a layup. Moundridge 2, Haven 0. Three seconds ticked off the clock. The rest of the first half was a complete blur to me, and I mean that in the literal sense in that I think I blacked out and truly I don’t remember anything that happened before halftime. The one memory I do have is trying to run an offense of THE STAR DRILL which anyone who knows anything about basketball or geometry knows it’s in fact a warm up drill and not an offense strategy in the least bit because all five players end up in a jumbled mess in the lane at the same time and get called for 3 second violations. So anyways it was a 24-minute muddled mess of layup after three-pointer after turnover after layup. They were full court pressing us the entire first half! Inbound, steal, two points. Inbound, dribble, steal, layup. As we walked towards the locker room, I glanced up and couldn’t help but notice the score was 45-0. (ZERO POINTS.) Our coach had nothing to say so instead she just started sobbing uncontrollably which of course is a great motivator/pep talk and a fine show of leadership from a middle-aged adult woman. Half of the team was crying too. My best friend Gina stood up and began putting on her clothes, saying that hey guys I’m going out to sit on the bus, see you when the game’s over. “LIKE HELL YOU’RE GOING TO THE BUS!” I said, pulling her down next to me as I tried to catch my breath between heaves of breathless hiccup sobs. Somehow we managed to gather enough courage to emerge from the locker room puffy-eyed just in time for the second half to start. Our coach silently sulked at the end of the bench, the 7th grade girls sat in awe of what was happening before their eyes (they, of course, had won their earlier game, probably by 40), and our parents kept those video cameras recording (???!!!) while yelling out really helpful tips like “bounce pass!!”. Gina’s older brother snatched up the tape after the game and planned to distribute copies the next day at the high school. The Moundridge Massacre. A game so memorable that it got its own name like all the other historic bloody battles. The final score was 91-6. Ninety one points to six points. I had two points (a lucky layup). I think Laurie Koehn had 85. Laurie Koehn’s Wikipedia page mentions “she once hit 132 out of 135 three pointers in a 5 minute period.” I googled this it immediately and yep, the proof’s on YouTube. That’s exactly what The Massacre looked like. Now she plays in the WNBA and I play HORSE twice a year with my husband on the playground and then I’m sore for two days. Nearly twenty years later, I cannot pick up a basketball without remembering that awful winter day. The Massacre: the day a small, nondescript 13-year-old girl single-handedly, with one ridiculous jump shot, annihilated an entire town’s psyche. But after years of reflection, I must thank Laurie Koehn for giving me the gift me hope. If I could overcome a brutal moment like that, I can deal with anything else that life will use to pound me down into a pulp. The Massacre is still a conversation topic when I return home to Kansas. It’s folklore, an urban legend; no one believes a team could actually get beat by 85 points, (“Isn’t there a mercy rule or something?”) – until they see the pain on my face at the mere mention of Laurie Koehn’s name. Somewhere, someone has every sad, sad second recorded on VHS. Thank God no one owns a VCR anymore.

We’ve spent the past few days helping you get better acquainted with our VIPs — now we’d like to introduce you to Health Hero VIP Wendell Holland and the causes that matter most to him.
Read on for more information about Holland — then head right here to vote once a day, every day, through November 15!
Meet Health Hero VIP Wendell Holland
What I do: I do what I absolutely love. I create art, meet new people, and work with some of my closest friends on a daily basis. More specifically, I am a furniture designer and builder at Beve Unlimited. Beve Unlimited is a Philadelphia-based custom furniture company specializing in reclaimed wood.
My chosen charity: I support The PALM (Center for Positive Aging in Lower Merion) in Ardmore, which is the senior center in Ardmore, because I grew up in Ardmore and have always felt a need to give back to my community. My father, Wen Sr. instilled the important value of always going back, reaching back, and giving back to your community in me long ago. The PALM is a staple in Ardmore, and my grandmother, Nana, spent some wonderful years there as she was getting older. She’d go there for a day full of activities, and then she’d come home with stories of what her and her friends did that day. My family is so thankful that a place like that existed right in Ardmore, and, for that reason, I’ve chosen to support the PALM again and again. Two years ago, my furniture company Beve Unlimited donated three giant reclaimed wood planters to the PALM because they needed something to house their organic garden. Today I wish to do more, so I choose The PALM as the charity to which I will donate any winnings.
What motivates you to try to make Philadelphia a healthier place? I’ve always tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Growing up, my father, Wendell Holland Sr., always stressed the importance of “faith and fitness,” and he always put me in competitive sports. At Harriton High School I captained our football, basketball, and track teams. As I’ve grown older, I’ve tried to consciously make healthier decisions, and that’s why I still work out regularly and I’m a pescatarian. I just want to live a healthy lifestyle, and live as long as I can. As such, the healthier my city is, the easier it is for me to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The more healthy restaurants, gyms of all sorts, and outdoor spaces conducive to working out (Fairmount Park, the Art Museum stairs, Kelly Drive, etc.), the easier it is for Philadelphians to maintain healthy lifestyles. Being healthy is sexy, being healthy is cool, and a healthy lifestyle allows you to live longer. I wish all those things on my beloved city.
Describe a health-related turning point in your life. When I turned 30, I tore my ACL. I had just moved back to Philly from a very healthy year of living in LA. In LA, I was hiking Runyon Canyon, hooping at Venice Beach, and swimming, all on a daily basis. I came home in the best shape of my adult life, and, that same year I turned 30. Within months of my birthday, I tore my ACL in a basketball rec league, and my game was forever changed. I didn’t know if I’d ever play basketball or do anything athletic again. But I was very determined. At that point in life, I was a law clerk for Judge Gregory Smith in City Hall. There I was just three blocks away from the Bellevue, where Bob Molluro was running the best rehab facility in the best gym in the city. I went there two to three times a week, and he had me vigorously rehabbing my knee, and quickly had me on the Bellevue basketball court doing slow, deliberate basketball drills as rehab. Within seven months I was playing again, but I was playing a different game. I no longer thought I was invincible. I didn’t slash to the hoop as much, and I began shooting a lot more three’s. It was when I tore my ACL at the age of 30 that I truly realized that I should listen to my body, and take care of my temple. From then on I continued to work out regularly, and I also became a pescatarian just to live a healthier lifestyle.
What “policy” would you institute to make Greater Philadelphia a healthier region? If I were in control, I’d further incentivize local farmers here inside Philadelphia to harvest healthy produce to sell at farmers markets and local restaurants. This will give more options to our citizens to eat healthy, as we’ll have more farm-to-table outlets.
What’s the most important part of your health or wellness regimen? I find it important to bring friends into my workout regimen. Whether I’m bringing my buddies to come play basketball with me, or if I’m going to a fit camp, I enjoy working out with friends. Bringing others into the fold also encourages accountability both ways. I hold friends accountable, and in turn, they keep me on my job because I feel an obligation to them to get out there with them.
What is your number one piece of health-related advice? Imagine that finish line, but set and accomplish intermediate goals. Sometimes after a few weeks of working out it becomes daunting not seeing results. But if you stay the course you’ll certainly see results. So instead of dreaming about losing 50 pounds, and being discouraged when it doesn’t happen overnight, give yourself a weekly goal of losing five pounds, and maybe walking an extra mile a day. This goal seems much more attainable than the 50-pound weight loss, and you’re adding a not-so-difficult walk into your workout.

(*Author's note: Oh come on; can you please do better next time? Especially with what had happened recently at the Australian Grand Prix. Like safety is way more critically important than entertainment plus these drivers are human beings NOT Ken dolls or the My Scene guy dolls which people can play with them and make up their own story. Like come on now, F1; do better at the Japanese Grand Prix at Japan. Foolish mistakes they made worse than how Britney is trapped in a conservatorship by her own father and his team of people who are truly responsible for the conservatorship with Britney and also the way D**** had a**** Cassie and everybody else who used to work with him. Also, R.I.P to those people who lost their precious lives to his (D****'s) pair of slimy and bloody hands based on how he took their precious lives--plus prayers to everyone out there who had been affected greatly by those ppl as well as free Palestine on another serious yet an irrelevant note BTW.
Also; Free Britney, Free Palestine and sending unconditional prayers for Britney, Cassie: Logan; George and everyone else in general on a serious yet an irrelevant note as well. 🙏 )
In my own opinion; this does feels like an obvious and a clear sighting of a rainbow appears in the islands of Hawaii after a long plus a sad additionally a dark and even a miserable heavy rain to pretty much wash away the pain where it does truly rains in Oahu as perhaps it had heard the news of Logan getting snubbed by James by having to put the weight of blame and shame on Logan when he didn't do anything wrong thus . . . by the time when Allisha won the Athletes Unlimited Hoops Championship in their 3rd Season then this is where I knew she wanted to dedicated it to her Floridan-Hawaii transplant merman on her win.
Interviewer: Did you heard Allisha Gray won this year's Athletes Unlimited Hoops Championship in Dallas, Logan?
Logan: (*Shows 'I have' sign*) I couldn't watch the championship unfortunately as I do have to travel and it is a deep pain under the deep waves of Haleiwa (Or more accurately 'A deep pain in the ****/ ***') for the international viewers including the people of Hawaii and also for all of the people who are watching this out there as I know there couldn't truly afford to either get the WNBA League Pass; VPN or either both which is worse . . . so . . . when I heard the news from Twitter/ X; I just . . . felt happy. It's like seeing a bright and joyful rainbow after a long, heavy; tough and miserable rain we do have to truly experienced it every day in the islands of Oahu, Hawaii.

Sports Betting Injuries News
<<Purdue to badger Wisconsin at Ross-Ade Sooners' Peterson discusses injuryNorman, OK (wwwgalaxyworldcasino.com) - Less than a week after suffering a broken collarbone, University of Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson met with the media on Wednesday to discuss the injury.
The junior running back racked up 228 all-purpose yards and scored twice but was injured on his 53-yard touchdown run with 6:38 left in the game against Iowa State.
Peterson hopes the recovery time will be four to six weeks and looks forward to having the injury heal properly so he can possibly play in a bowl game.
"I am praying each night for a speedy recovery," Peterson said. "I would enjoy playing with the guys and being back out on the field. I am looking forward to playing."
OU head athletics trainer Scott Anderson also talked about Peterson's injury and recovery time.
"(The recovery) course is expected to take six weeks," Anderson said. "We will, of course, have assessments during this period of time as we go through and manage and track his recovery. Adrian has always had a great capacity for recovery from the injuries that he has had."
Peterson has 935 yards rushing this season with 10 touchdowns and has also caught eight passes for 127 yards and a score.

You can vote for Health Hero VIP Wendell Holland through November 15.
We’re still in full-swing of our 2018 Health Hero Challenge presented by Independence Blue Cross, folks. While the voting on our semi-finalists is now closed (but we’ll be announcing our top three finalists very soon!), we’re still seeking votes for our Health Hero VIPs.
Our Health Hero VIPs (which stands for Very Influential Philadelphians) are all probably names you’ve heard before — Christian Crosby, Tracy Davidson, and Wendell Holland — and they’re currently facing off for a $2,500 donation to the charities of their choices.

The Super Bowl is over. This is everything you need to know about college basketball
College basketball is ready for the spotlight. This is what you need to know heading into March Madness.
Football season has come and gone, and with that, the national spotlight finally shifts toward college basketball. The greatest postseason in American sports is right around the corner. Selection Sunday is only five weeks away.
We understand if you’ve been distracted by fantasy teams, Super Bowl squares, and other totally legal, government-approved forms of gambling on football. That’s why we’re here to get you up to speed on college hoops before the bracket is announced.
There is perhaps no greatest tradition in college basketball than pretending like you know what you’re talking about when you’ve barely watched the sport at all before March. Let us help.
Who’s the best team in the country?
It’s definitely Villanova. Or maybe Purdue. Possibly Virginia. If Duke figures out its defense ... if Arizona gets better point guard play ... if Michigan State starts peaking at the right time like it always does ... if Kansas gets hot from three ....
The thing you need to know heading into March is that this year is wide open. All of the top teams have flaws, there is a strong pack of middle-tier, power-conference teams, and anyway, anything can happen in a single-elimination format.
Here is a wild guess: there will be no overwhelming favorite in your pool this year. It feels like a season where a No. 7 seed could make the Final Four (hey, South Carolina did it last year,) or a No. 3 seed everyone discounts goes all the way.
Don’t feel obligated to copy off the experts this year. Your guess is as good as anyone else’s.
Can you run down the national title favorites for us?
Sure thing.
Villanova: Great veteran point guard (Jalen Brunson), elite 3-and-D wing (Mikal Bridges), tons of supplemental scoring options (Donte DiVincenzo, Phil Booth), and a productive big man (Omari Spellman) it was missing last year. Jay Wright’s team has the No. 1 offense in the country, but the defense is only No. 42 right now, according to KenPom.
Virginia: No. 1 in defense, dead last in tempo. This is a classic Virginia team, with the caveat that it might have more athletic, attacking guards on the perimeter. The big question is whether its offense is good enough to make a Final Four run.
Purdue: Shooters everywhere with a 7’2 center in Isaac Haas in the middle. The Boilermakers lost arguably the best player in program history (Caleb Swanigan) and somehow got better. Sophomore guard Carsen Edwards is the engine.
Duke: The Blue Devils have the highest ceiling of any team in the country because of their raw talent level. Marvin Bagley III is unstoppable, Wendell Carter Jr. is playing his best ball of the season, and there is shooting on the wings. The defense is terrible right now, and Coach K has fully committed to a zone defense.
Michigan State: The Spartans haven’t looked great yet but are still 22-3. Miles Bridges has been good, not great. Jaren Jackson Jr. has become this team’s best NBA prospect as a center who can stretch the floor and block shots. Cassius Winston is the breakout star here, a sophomore point guard who can fill it up from three and facilitate like a pro.
Xavier: It feels like the Musketeers make the second weekend every year. The offense, led by Trevon Bluiett, is top 10 in the country, but the defense is shaky.
Kansas: The two-post system is gone, and there are no surefire first-round picks on the roster. Instead, the Jayhawks spread the floor with shooters and launch threes. The lack of interior depth and poor free-throw shooting is worrisome.
Cincinnati: It’s the same story with the Bearcats every year: They can really defend, but can they score enough to win deep in March? Do-it-all forward Gary Clark is one of the country’s most underrated glue guys.
Arizona: Deandre Ayton is basically Patrick Ewing 2.0. Allonzo Trier is a monster scorer in the backcourt. The big questions are point guard play and defense. There is so much pressure on head coach Sean Miller to finally make the Final Four with this team.
Texas Tech: Yes, really: Texas Tech!! The Red Raiders have an athletic roster that plays lockdown defense. Senior guard Keenan Evans is a star in the making. Head coach Chris Beard seems cool.
Trae Young is king
If you’ve heard anything about college basketball this season, you’ve probably heard about Trae Young. He’s not the next Stephen Curry, but it’s clear Curry’s brilliance is a touchstone for his own game.
Young has unlimited range and takes shots no one else would even consider. He turns the ball over a lot and struggles to defend. He also leads the country in both points and assists per game.
The whole country will be waiting on Young to drop 40-point games in March — he has already done it four times this season. It feels like that’s the only way Oklahoma can go on a deep tournament run.
It looks like a down year for Kentucky
The Wildcats are big and athletic, but the pieces don’t really seem to fit this year. There is a notable lack of shooting, which was apparent again in their weekend loss to Missouri when they shot just 2-of-20 from three-point range.
The other big difference with Kentucky this year is the lack of star power. It’s possible Kevin Knox gets drafted in the top 10, but there are no top-five picks this year like De’Aaron Fox or Karl-Anthony Towns.
Of course, 2014 also looked like a down year for Kentucky. That’s when the Wildcats were a No. 8 seed in March and went all the way to the title game. It’s impossible to write off a team with this many five-star recruits, but this just doesn’t feel like one of John Calipari’s best rosters.
The SEC is actually good
Speaking of Kentucky: It is no longer the preordained winner of the SEC. The conference could get anywhere from 7-10 teams in the NCAA tournament field this season. SEC basketball is finally good.
Auburn has been one of the season’s biggest surprises coming off the FBI scandal. Tennessee is better than anyone expected. Florida has firepower on the perimeter, and Alabama looks like a potential sleeper with freshman star Collin Sexton at the controls.
What’s up with Grayson Allen?
Allen spent his first three years at Duke becoming college basketball’s most infamous player. This year he’s been suspiciously quiet, both in terms of production and lack of controversy.
Allen started the season on fire by torching Michigan State in the Champions Classic in November, but he hasn’t made many headlines since. It just feels like he’s going to do something to get everyone talking about him when March rolls around.
Give us some good sleepers
This is hard, but we’ll try:
Middle Tennessee: It has won an NCAA tournament each of the last two years, and this might be its best team yet. Memphis and Alabama transfer Nick King is a stud on the wing, and Giddy Potts (Giddy Potts!) is still around to hit threes. This year has a top-20 defense, but the offense (No. 82) is slightly behind where it’s been the last two years.
Seton Hall: The Pirates have four senior starters, a double-double machine up front in Angel Delgado, and some shooting on the wings. This team isn’t elite on either side of the ball, but it’s solid on both ends.
Alabama: Sexton is a lottery pick for a reason. No one can stop him going to the hoop. Donta Hall anchors the No. 12 defense in the country, while freshman Herb Jones provides a rare blend of length and athleticism on the perimeter. Dazon Ingram, John Petty, and Braxton Key add supplemental scoring power.
Gonzaga: The Bulldogs lost their best guard and two best bigs from last year’s title run, but this is still a very good team. Johnathan Williams is a dependable senior inside, and guard Josh Perkins has taken his game to new heights as a junior. With the No. 7 offense and No. 34 defense, Gonzaga is efficient on both ends.
Who’s your national title pick?
I picked Villanova in the preseason, so I will stick with Villanova now.
But like we said earlier: It’s wide open. This is going to be another great NCAA tournament.

Huffington Post: These Are The Top 25 Freshmen Of Men's College Basketball
The 2017 freshmen class is once again brimming with potential, perhaps even more than last year. Duke, for example, has a wealth of talent: Power forward Harry Giles, while small forward Jayson Tatum and combo guard Frank Jackson have also flashed tremendous ability, albeit not in consistent doses.
John Calipari’s quartet of ESPN Top 100 recruits in Lexington isn’t too shabby either. Malik Monk stole all the headlines when he dropped a school-record 47 points ― including the eventual game-winning triple ― against highly touted North Carolina in Las Vegas. But his backcourt mate, De’Aaron Fox, is a lightning quick point guard with splendid creative abilities and exceptional on-ball defensive characteristics.
Maybe the best freshman of all, however, is Washington’s Markelle Fultz, an enticing playmaker with few flaws. The 6-foot-4 guard hailing from the basketball-rich Washington, D.C., area averages over 23 points per game, which ranks sixth in the country. And he could very well be the No. 1 pick in June, should he turn pro.
With that in mind, here are my top 25 freshmen ― not ranked in order ― for this college hoops season.
All stats are through Feb. 8.

Fultz is the biggest recruit in Washington history, and that includes decorated names like Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson and Spencer Hawes. Lorenzo Romar’s club isn’t particularly good elsewhere, which gives the 6-foot-4 Fultz a real opportunity to display his array of skills. A highly fluid scorer without any real weaknesses — he hails from the basketball hotbed of Upper Marlboro, MD — Fultz is terrific in pick-and-roll and with the tricky in-between game. He can really shoot it as well, a huge plus for a young guard who already has the ball skills to be immediately effective as a pro. Fultz’s 23.2 points per game slot him sixth in the country.

Jackson was widely regarded as the top prospect in his class and you can’t help but draw comparisons with him and former Jayhawk Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, was probably a better shooter at this point, but Jackson displays similar athletic traits, along with the ability to drive the basketball and lock down three positions. He is the type of player every NBA team covets — a lockdown defender who can get to the rim whenever he wants. And Jackson can pass, too: He averaged over six assists as a high school senior and has flashed his passing prowess in Lawrence as well. Plus, he has excelled playing the four spot for Bill Self.

Ball dazzles with the rare ability to control a game without scoring. He is likened to former UCLA star point guard Russell Westbrook. Lofty expectations come with being the Gatorade High School Player of the Year. At 6-foot-5, Ball is a slashing playmaker who excels in transition. As he continually develops in pick-and-roll and further masters the tempo at this level, he will have a chance to exceed to the expectations bestowed upon him by bringing a national championship back to Westwood for the first time in over two decades. His 7.8 assists per game rank second in the country.

Leaf may not have been as heralded as Ball, but he’s arguably been even more important. The former Arizona commit was the 13th rated player in ESPN’s Top 100, and he’s burst onto the scene for Steve Alford. His all-around game at 6-foot-9 is complemented by a fluidness we rarely see with young bigs. He is fantastic as both a face-up scorer and passer. And he had one NBA head coach gushing to me over his offensive prowess. Leaf leads the Bruins in both scoring and rebounding (17 and 9), as well as 3-point percentage (47 percent).

Standing nearly 6-foot-11 and somewhere between 222 and 235 pounds, Giles reminds us of Chris Webber. Add in a 7-foot-3 wingspan and a maximum standing reach an inch taller than Anthony Davis, Giles has the body to play either position on the front line. He tore his MCL and meniscus in his left knee, and he’s torn the ACL in both knees — all before turning 18. So don’t let his limited sample size fool you. The returns on Giles will come.

Tatum has emerged as a top-notch offensive weapon for Duke. At 6-foot-8, he can post up, as well as face up out to the 3-point line. His ability to handle the ball is a huge bonus as well. While Tatum isn’t a special athlete nor a great finisher at the rim yet, his immense skill stands out. He is a typical new age NBA wing.

Jackson is a combo guard and one of the main reasons Duke will contend for a sixth title under Mike K. Similar to teammate Grayson Allen — the Wooden Award favorite — Jackson can fill it up from deep, while attacking the paint and using his elite leaping ability to finish among the trees. Remember, “Frank from Utah” was named the McDonald’s All-American game MVP and the dunk contest champion as well.

Smith’s smooth handle and creativity is sensational. He was a great get for NC State head coach Mark Gottfried. Not only did he replace an NBA caliber point guard in Cat Barber, but he entered Raleigh amid ACC Player of the Year expectations. A downhill player with elite quickness, Smith impresses with his finishing and passing ability, as well as an eagerness to compete defensively. Averaging nearly 19 points and 7 assists, he is likely to eclipse 200 free-throws as well. With respect to Kansas’ Frank Mason III, here isn’t a more all-around guard — regardless of class — in America.

Alkins hails from basketball-rich Brooklyn and is a pure power guard (think Lance Stephenson). At 6-foot-5, he attacks with ease, flashing tremendous scoring ability. Alkins would be well served to become a more consistent perimeter shooter to complement his driving, but there is no question that his blend of size, dynamic ability and defensive prowess will take him to the next level.
Darryl Oumi via Getty Images
Simmons is a dynamic scorer and not much more at this point, but that’s OK. The Atlanta native possesses the prototypical size at 6-foot-4 for a lead guard. He must add weight to a lean frame for the next level, but Simmons has assumed most of the playmaking responsibilities of formerly suspended guard Allonzo Trier. He’s not a great pick-and-roll operator yet, but Trier’s ability to get into the paint is undoubtedly impressive.
Christian Petersen via Getty Images
Markkanen is a wonderfully skilled, classic new-age NBA big who can spread the floor as a shooter. Don’t let his shooting overshadow his interior game, though. The 7-foot Finnish product is constantly mixing it up in the paint, while showing the capacity to score with either hand as well. He is deft out of the pick-and-roll as well.
Lexington Herald-Leader via Getty Images
Monk, an Arkansas product, is one of the most ready NBA guards to play for John Calipari. The comparison I would make is former Temple product and NBA All-Star Eddie Jones. Monk is 6-foot-3, so he’s not as big. But he’s a rangy athlete with unlimited shooting range. Monk is decent enough in the pick-and-roll, as well as in isolation opportunities and clearly relishes primetime: He lit up North Carolina for a school-record 47 points, including the game-winning triple. If he can become a more versatile playmaker for others, that would be the icing on the cake to this exciting young talent.

Gabriel is Calipari’s junkyard dog. He can defend and finish in the paint, but isn’t asked to do much more. At 6-foot-9, though, Gabriel’s length and athleticism make him a highly intriguing NBA prospect, especially if he stays in school another year or two to further his offensive game.
USA Today Sports / Reuters
The fastest guard in America — and it’s not even close. Fox, who is 6-foot-3, runs the show for John Calipari and Kentucky. Calipari has called this maybe his quickest backcourt ever — or at least since the John Wall/Eric Bledsoe combination. The dynamic Fox is most lethal in the open floor and is an effective isolation player. He is a total non-shooter at this point in his career (has only attempted 31 3s) and that’s OK. The lefty more than makes up for it with his passing (5 assists) and ability to finish (16 points per game).

The 6-foot-10 Adebayo is a physical specimen who also happens to play with a relentless motor. Like Bismack Biyombo, but maybe with more offensive upside. Adebayo is a potentially dominant rebounder and defender with a decent enough touch around the rim to get double digit points as well.
Michael Reaves via Getty Images
Bridges is the most explosive dunker Tom Izzo has had since Jason Richardson, and he might be the most exciting prospect as well. The Flint native — Izzo’s favorite — can score in a variety of ways, using his powerful frame and athleticism to get back to his left hand. He has enjoyed an exceptional freshman campaign — averaging 16 points and 8 rebounds — despite an uncharacteristically subpar Spartans team.
Lance King via Getty Images
The McDonald’s All-American has flashed for the Heels, but hasn’t dominated. An excellent rebounder (about 15 per 40 minutes), the 6-foot-10 Bradley is a fluid young four man with a decent set of skills. His mobility and length (7-foot-4 wingspan) are very hard to ignore.
Michael Reaves via Getty Images
Allen, who hails from Austin, has a deft shooting touch in the paint and displays good dexterity for a 6-foot-11 freshman. While he must improve his toughness, he isn’t soft — just really young. The upside isn’t as high as his peers on the list, but he will play in the NBA for a long time.
Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
Isaac, a Florida native, is an impressive talent who impacts the game in a variety of ways. He can score when needed, but his rebounding (8 per game) is more noticeable, as is a tireless motor to lock down his man. At 6-foot-11, he is a natural small forward, with the potential to guard three or even four positions.
Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
Moore was an ESPN Top 100 guy and has quietly become one of the most underrated guards in the Pac-12. He can really shoot it (40 percent 3s) and is an explosive scorer who can get his in bunches. The challenge for the 5-foot-11 Chicago product is simply to become a more harassing defender and more consistent offensive weapon.
William Mancebo via Getty Images
Collins, the 6-foot-10 freshman from Las Vegas, has quickly become a terrific weapon for Mark Few. He converts an incredible 66 percent of his field goals — though most are in the paint — and displays a capable shooting touch out to 15 feet. Collins is a big reason why the Zags have achieved the best start in school history, along with a No. 1 ranking.
USA Today Sports / Reuters
Creighton continues to pile up wins, in large part to Patton, the local product out of Omaha. At 6-foot-11, Patton is a really big kid and surprisingly nimble athlete. His 18-point (9-12 shooting), 8-rebound, 2-block effort against previously undefeated and No. 1 Villanova proved he doesn’t mind the big stage either. He knows what to do with the ball on the block and, like North Carolina’s Tony Bradley, runs the floor extremely well.
Robert Laberge via Getty Images
Williams is oozing with potential. At 6-foot-9 with an insane 7-foot-4 wingspan, he plays really big. From a defensive standpoint, he is a natural shot-blocker with impeccable timing. Offensively, he understands spacing well and likes to post up on both blocks. He can shoot it as well.
Frederick Breedon via Getty Images
Heron — ESPN’s 25th rated player in his class — was a big fish to land for third-year head coach Bruce Pearl. And he’s yet to disappoint. After averaging 30 points per game in high school, the powerfully built 6-foot-4 Heron has averaged over 16 points per game on 40 percent 3-point shooting for the Tigers. Plus, he is an outstanding guard rebounder (5.7 per game).
Steven Ryan via Getty Images
LoVett is a better version of fellow freshman standout guard Shamorie Ponds. Firstly, he possesses a prodigious ability to score the ball (17 per game). He’s constantly probing the lane, using his terrific handle and first step to attack gaps and straight-line drive. What is most impressive about the Indiana native is his efficiency: LoVett converts 48 percent from the floor and 41 percent from 3, both sensational numbers.
