Atem x Miho? 🤔 Never thought of that before, but it sounds interesting! Can I hear some of your thoughts on them? (Also, welcome aboard the Carryship, 😁😁!)

AAAAA Atem x Miho ;w; Yes, absolutely! On the surface the two of them seem pretty mismatched: Miho is a flirty sweet girl with a bit of a manipulative streak and Atem is...uh. He's himself. And yet they're both fiercely determined people who will rip the shirts off their backs for their friends and family when push comes to shove. Miho was ready to throw hands for Anzu when she thought she was being manipulated by sleazy men (Episode 2 of S0) and Atem is always ready to throw hands for those he loves. Once she realizes that Atem is a separate person from Yuugi she'd probably want to get to know him better; not even as a "hot guy" because she has zero interest in him like that (at least at first :3c) but as a new friend. In thanks, he'd teach her how to play Duel Monsters, which she would...not be too fond of at first. Atem though is nothing if not good at letting people see their strengths, and Miho would probably thrive when allowed to do mind games (though she'd insist on cute monsters instead of 'ugly' ones). Also their relationship would be one of mutual respect, since Atem doesn't see her as just a cute girl to impress and she wouldn't just see him as a superhero or knight in shining armor. Dates would be hilarious examples of Atem having negative levels of rizz and Miho just thinking he's really funny and awkward. Miho would have a bit of a jealous streak, though, once they started dating. She likes male attention, but never really commits to anyone (She liked Ryou, but everyone with eyes thinks he's attractive)...this is the first guy she's ever seriously liked, and she's familiar enough with how girls like her manipulate guys that she's not going to stand for it. Atem doesn't have a jealous streak, but he will defend her from creeps without hesitation, which makes her feel safe. Their devotion to each other would be fierce and unyielding, and she would teasingly call him "My King" in private. He'd be a bit more serious about it and actually give her a title (once he got his memories back), which would melt her heart every single time. It's hard to be coquettish when he's so earnest about everything! HHHH I can go on about these two for hours and hours I love them so much okay

Aside from rivalshipping and spiritshipping are there any other Yugioh ships you enjoy?

I am the worst multishipper in the galaxy. Like truly.

I grew up loving Joey and Mai but now that I’m older and I know the actual age gap it’s hard to still be for it. If it does happen it happens way later in life. Right now they are just really good friends

The DM crew is so friendship based it’s hard for me. I’ll dabble in wishshipping or puzzleshipping (I get where they are coming from and when done right it’s done right) but I set this au as rivalshipping and rivalshipping it will stay.

I could see Tristian and Miho.

Atem is different because I think he’s just interested in games here. Or pinning over Mana or Mahad which ever way you want it to go.

And while I’m a hard Spiritshipper Yusei x Jaden when done right is done right. And I can understand where Jaden x Alexis are coming from even if it’s not my favorite.

Honestly they are a group of teenagers on an island who are just figuring themselves out. Thank goodness the writers didn’t do romance because the amount of break up and different relationships you could have is wild.

I’m focusing on Rivalshipping and Spiritshipping here because I prefer them.

Anyone else will probably be in passing. The story is Jaden focused and I don’t think Jaden paid much attention to dating at duel academy. I can absolutely see his friends being in a relationship flying right over his head until they break up and he’s like “woh why is X sad all the sudden?”

He’s emotionally smart but also very focused on friendship and dueling.

I haven’t made and decisions on side pairing because I like to leave options open. If you think these two people should be together that’s great and if you want to see that in this story even better. I probably will keep most of the relationship age for that reason.

I have my to main ships and if I feel like adding another pairing I will but right now the DM crew are young adults raising a child (18 year olds raising a 4 year old) they have pleanty of time to figure out their lives.

And when Jaden goes to school his friends are all teens. There are messy crushes and relationship but it’s rare for any of them to stick. (Example Chazz and Alexis might go on one date and decide to be friends afterwards. Zane and Atticus might have had a thing their first year before Atticus went missing and it takes them a while to find their groove again or they date other people) it’s all fluid right now.

yugioh characters sexuality (long edition):

yugi: bisexual and possibly aromantic. In the case of the last one it took him forever to admit it to himself because he associated it with the usual "I shall be unlovable and monstrous forever" schtick. Also he's nonbinary

atem: asexual and biromantic (is tag-teaming with yugi. Covering each others bases) doesn't know what a gender is and is slightly perplexed by his partners complex relationship with it

joey: I like how we have all agreed he’s bi. Has a slight preference for men (55-45 ratio about) and simultaneously a preference for more feminine looking people. outside of gender terms he's a leg man don't @ me

Anzu: also bisexual with a preference for men (60-40). Tgirl Anzu that is hustling to pay for estrogen and bottom surgery and does dance partially because it gives her gender euphoria my beloved

Honda: gay sorry miho. Took longer to admit it than Joey but is dealing with it better than he is tbh. Give him a good boyfriend for his patience please

Ryou: we’re not sure actually. He’s not even sure. Likes guys… probably. May not like women… maybe? Likes ghosts. Whether or not he's a tboy is a 50/50 toss in the air

Evil(tm) Bakura: he came from a time before pride pins existed but mostly likes guys yeah. Not actually as horny as people make him out to be. Tkb has no rizz I will stand by this he was a feral child that was mostly focused on vengeance and food all the time.

Pegasus: straight in a gay way I won't be elaborating. Might be a lesbian.

Kaiba: Blue Eyes White Dragon with left homophobia regardless of any actual attraction he experiences.

Duke: Bisexual but he does not know how to be normal about it. There is a difference in his mind between exploiting sexuality/flirting and actually engaging in it on a personal level. The first he is good at the latter less good at. He will have a gender crisis once and return with his new gender, Cis+ and/or genderfluid.

Marik: Sometimes a man is misogynistic enough that he becomes gay (real talk he is gay and the idea of needing to Procreate for the sake of the tombkeepers lineage has haunted him from day 1). Also he might be transfem but probably will never know that due to internalized self loathing and various other issues (is tempted to just stay a cis guy because everyone assumes hes a girl because of how he dresses and that was just like. Normal Guy Clothes for him growing up)

Yami Marik: technically the same thing as normal marik but also he couldn't gaf about something as stupid as 'gender' (his or others) in the long run because he has better things to do, like murder people and lick random surfaces

Ishizu: Lesbian and was not looking forward to continuing the bloodline of the Tombkeepers Heritage (tm). Is going to have a gender crisis at age 23 and her siblings are going to be very supportive of her while she cuts off all her hair and starts wearing exclusively wearing business suits (may or may not stick)

Rishid: The only relationship i care about is rishid x therapy. Someone a while ago said nb lesbian rishid and i support the vision

hmm i thought id never be able to either read or write character death, but then wrote a danganronpa fic for a friend and realized that writing it can be very cathartic. (still cant read it tho)

and for yugioh im not sure. i used to not like flare all that much, but the more i thought about it the more i was into the ship. then finally writing them made me go Welp, add this to my list of otps. (also, writing from kaibas pov is surprisingly fun, more than i thought itd be)

i also used to think i wasnt into unrequited love, but man, that can be very good very tasty

id rather atem doesnt go. he didnt want to, not more than he wanted to be with his partner and friends, and my ideal ending is one where he follows that feeling and stays. something something Choose Your Own Destiny trope that yugioh canon is otherwise full of

(but i also like the scenarios where he goes to the afterlife and then returns, if only because of how creative you can get with them. theres so much to play with, like - when does he return? right away or years later, after yuugi processed most of his grief? does he come back as a man or a god, how much power does he have? how did he return, was it by choice or did something happen outside of his control? etc)

on one hand i see bakura as very gay gay homosexual, and weve seen how he is with fangirls. (i never watched all of s0 though, apologies)

on the other, yuugi and anzu are in my eyes pretty much doomed as a ship. he had that kinda puppy-love crush on her, a beautiful girl who was his only friend at the time, and she was crushing on a part of him that wasnt even him. im sure that she loved both yuugi and atem, but that atem is the only one that she was in love with. and even that was a very immature kind of love, with way too much idealizing

my answer to this one is weird but, for me yuugi and anzu becoming a thing is more believable (sometime in the future, maybe, after atem is gone and they both grew and changed as people), but i would way rather read fics for miho x bakura. probably because i dont find it believable lol. some kinda no brainer romcom that i dont consider plausible at all but have fun reading anyway

23: Has your favorite ship changed over time? -- Oh gods, has it. When I first entered this fandom...years ago, I was a very dedicated Revolutionshipper (Atem x Anzu) and Peachshipper (Yuugi x Anzu), but over time I grew cold on those ships. I'm still a fan of Atem x Miho (which doesn't have a ship name?), and I wrote an AU about them more than a decade ago. I may have to revisit it and fix it up because I absolutely love that ship and you will pry it from my cold dead hands. After a while I became an ardent Wishshipper (Joey x Yuugi) and I still love that ship to death. But upon rewatching the series and revisiting it in earnest, I started growing much more fond of YB, Marik, and TKB. Currently, my favorite ship is Boundshipping (TKB x Yuugi) and... A crossover ship that I'm tentatively calling Emeraldshipping (TKB x Inko Midoriya). Yes, we are talking about Izuku's mom from MHA. This is under the prerequisite that TKB and Inko are both consenting adults (I have always headcanoned TKB as around 25, Millennium Book be damned). Emeraldshipping has a similar vibe to Boundshipping, especially with the redemption romance dynamics. Inko is such a gentle person, and TKB needs someone who will worry for and care for him while teaching him what love actually is. Meanwhile I think TKB would practically worship the ground she walks on once the two of them actually fall in love and get comfortable with one another. Also, her insecurities concerning their age gap is an interesting thing to explore, especially since if we're going with post-series TKB who has been around 3,000 years, it's just her body that's older (not her soul). If we're going with YB x Inko, I think there would be much more emphasis on the fact that YB is not used to kindness, but here's this woman mothering him and even being firm with him like he's being an unruly child rather than an ancient spirit. Unless YB is a separate entity and not currently possessing Ryou, I feel like this would be one-sided on YB's end. Unless / until he gets an adult body in which case Inko will have a strange white-haired man that looks suspiciously like the sour kid she'd been helping and feeding declaring that she is 'his woman' and....hhhhhhhhhhhh. I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THESE TWO.

So...I might as well post all my Yu-Gi-Oh! OTPs. Not to mention it's to hopefully clear up like who I ship with who. I have had people think that just because Atem and Bast are together, that must mean Yugi and Catzi will be too. And let me just say, no. That's not the case. While Yugi and Catzi are the renicarnation of Atem and Bast, it doesn't mean they will end up together again. Yugi and Catzi are just good friends.

DestinyLoveshipping (Pharaoh Atem/Queen Bast) – This kinda speaks for itself. I always felt Atem deserved to have a good strong Queen by his side. (Not to mention I never shipped him with Tea…or Yugi for that matter. Seriously…why do people love Puzzle shipping so much? -_-; ) So, when making Bast, I tried to picture of what would be the girl he would fall for. And thus, Bast was born. She’s mature, quiet, strong-willed, and kind. She is also not afraid when facing off anyone she duels. Like her husband, she shows no mercy. I do feel like Atem would love her strong good heart. Her being beautiful is just a plus. Their relationship seriously makes me smile because omg the angst and feels. Ah! I love these two so much. CX

 

Loneshipping (Marik Ishtar/Catzi Kaioh) – I’m going to say this, over the years of me coming back to YGO every now and then, I feel like Catzi has gone through a few guys. First time I made her; she was with Yugi. Second time, with Ryou. And now coming back a third time, I loved Marik so much that I loved the idea of him and Catzi being together. I mean, I already did kinda ship them back then too. The thought of Marik falling for Catzi due to her feisty ways as well as the fact she is willing to forgive him despite what he did. This relationship just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. CX

 

Guardianshipping (Yugi Muto/Carrie Francess) – I have said it before but, this ship was kinda a crack ship. And this was before I decided to make Carrie a flexible character. Yup, she was still a DP character when I thought of this ship. But now, she is no longer tied to DP and now I am free to have her be any character I see fit. This relationship between the two has developed and thanks to my friend, she got me to love them very much. Just picturing Yugi being such a sweet boyfriend to Carrie just makes me heart melt.

 

Drawnshipping (Joey Wheeler/Yuki Fumiya) – As I have mentioned before, I am not the biggest fan of other people’s OCs. If they are well written and great characters, I am willing to make an exception. Luckily, someone I became friends with who helped me love ships like Guardianshipping created her own characters and she made some really good ones. Yuki is a nice character and I do like her relationship with Joey. Plus, it’s hilarious that she has a crush on him and he’s downright freaking clueless about it. XD Ah, Joey, I love you but man you are dense. I also like this pair way more than Polarshipping. I have never cared for Joey/Mai especially with their age gap.

 

Blissfulshipping (Ryou Bakura/Chrissy Major) – I don’t do a lot of self inserts. XD I have only done it once before and that was with SWAT Kats. But the fact I had loved Marik/Catzi, I felt so bad for Ryou. The poor boy is forgotten so much, I feel he deserves some love and attention. And by goodness, Chrissy would be sure to give him that love and attention. But she is respectful of his boundaries too due to his fangirls never leaving him alone.

 

Warmshipping (Chase Fumiya/Tea Gardner) Again, like with Yuki, Chase is an interesting character. Plus, the fact Tea being the only one to stand up to him besides his sister Yuki would make him start to crush on her. I like to think Tea would come to care for Chase and wishing to change him for the better. Not to mention, I never really shipped Tea with anyone (except with Kaiba honestly) like I certainly never liked her being with Yugi or Atem for that matter. With Chase, I can see this working out. ^-^ Not to mention she would keep him from getting in trouble.

 

Raidershipping (Thief King Bakura/Carmen Sandiego) – When I saw the Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego, I really loved the concept of it as well as Carmen herself. She is downright gorgeous, and I couldn’t help but like the idea of her being with Bakura. Her calm sassiness would go great with his sarcastic ego. Plus, she would probably be the only one to put up with him. XD I can picture the two going on missions and using their thieving skills to keep artifacts safe. Also, this would be after he has been redeemed.

 

Sideshipping (Tristan Taylor/Miho Nosaka) – Let me just say this…I don’t really care for Miho. So why is she in this? Because this Miho is different to what we saw in the season 0 anime. I never liked the fact she is just some gold-digging dense girl. She never seemed like the type to even hang out with Yugi and the others. I know they wanted to have it so that Tea is not the only girl, but seriously. There were barely any good things about her. So, for this, Miho is more like her manga self. She’s shy but caring and quiet. I feel like, if she wasn’t embarrassed by that mean teacher, I think Tristan would have had a shot with her. Plus, I don’t ship Tristan with Serenity. Why? The duel he, Serenity, and Duke had in the Noah’s Ark. Duke didn’t baby Serenity while Tristan did. He acted like she couldn’t do a thing for herself. True it was her first duel, but she could learn and I’m sure Duke could trust her to do that. Tristan didn’t and I feel like their relationship just wouldn’t last even if Joey were to let it happen. Plus, Serenity seems to like Tristan as another brother anyway. Like I said, I know Tristan can have a girl, and I rather be it Miho.

Cheershipping (Duke Devlin/Serenity Wheeler) – As I said above, I ship Duke/Serenity way more than Tristan/Serenity. I just like how he is willing to believe in Serenity and the fact he says in the manga of how she helps him be stronger. I just…awe!

 

Empathyshipping (Seto Kaiba/Ayano Shibata) – Another friend of mine came up with this character after seeing DSOD. Like Kaiba needs some serious help, so she came up with a therapist for him and even ended up shipping her with him. It’s freaking hilarious XD and Ayano is great.

Malik, Ryou, Yūgi, and Ryūji run a DnD/tabletop gaming/occult madness group together, meeting on Thursday nights to go absolutely wild. Ryūji always brings alcohol despite Malik's abstinence and the others' medical contraindications—inevitably, Ryou swigs a glass in the end and feels wretched the next morning. All four use their DnD characters to act out the feelings they otherwise can’t access or process: If they're not DM, Ryou plays sadists and thugs to deal with ever-suppressed frustration; Yūgi mains cynical prophets and luckless prostitutes to convey buried despair and isolation; Malik slides into healer archetypes to express his unfulfilled cravings for a nurturing figure; Ryūji inverts his fears of future dispossession and ennui with vengeance-obsessed ghosts and revenants. Rishid sometimes joins as a fifth party member, and tends to get more caught up in the roleplaying aspects than the others. Though he doesn’t confront his problems vicariously, he does provide heartfelt feedback on whatever plot eventuates, thus consolidating any issues tackled along the way.

The DnD playlist is generally outsourced to Anzu, who shares Yūgi and Malik’s penchant for visual kei. Usually, it’s a mixture of X Japan and Broadway hits. (Most agreed that while Jason Robert Brown's 'If I Didn't Believe in You' wasn't what they'd expected after 'Kurenai', it fitted very, very well.) Sometimes, when she’s relatively time-poor, she delegates to Miho, Honda, or Jōnouchi. Miho will pick from a library of CDs bought at comiket, ranging from Touhou tracks to IOSYS and Shibayan arrangements. Some Yellow Magic Orchestra also slips in from time to time. Honda assembles Hans Zimmer, Fumio Hayasaka, and Ennio Morricone tracks, simultaneously picking out the most stereotypically DnD numbers he can find and satisfying his own tastes. Jō selects blues-tinted British supergroup hits— 'White Room', 'Pinball Wizard', 'Smoke on the Water', 'The Long and Winding Road', 'Iron Man' (of Paranoid notoriety), and the entirety of Exile on Main St. Generally, he needles Seto about whether he'd like to contribute to the soundtrack. Only once has Seto agreed to such, creating an entire playlist rather than picking out a single song. Indeed, the gang spent the night bemused by the fact that their most violent fight scene yet was staged over Ella Fitzgerald's rendition of the Jerome Kern songbook.

The occult shenanigans are as wild as the DnD games—many a night has been spent bent over the Ouija board, attempting to channel any wandering spirits. Ryūji, being the sole one of the four never to have been possessed in past, is the designated vessel; and the three times that summoning has gone to plan, he's lost whatever motor control the alcohol spared. Once, Ryou proposed that they summon Atem—however, Malik shut down the conversation then and there before it could progress.

The group first assembled following DSoD, approximately a month before beginning university. They're all notorious for putting more effort into settings and character sheets than into assignments. Not because they don't work hard academically, but because each has a predisposition towards procrastination, which DnD enables wonderfully.

Some thoughts on Hocus Pocus, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Magic Zine

A while back I backed Hocus Pocus: The Yu-Gi-Oh! Magic Zine (@ygomagiczine) at the “Breaker The Magical Warrior” level, and not long ago I received my rewards, as pictured above:

Top left corner (and what I was honestly the most excited about): a Yu-Gi-Oh! themed Tarot deck—a complete one, not just the Major Arcana cards

A postcard with the “Eye of Wdjat” on it (sort of; Yu-Gi-Oh! calls it the Eye of Anubis because of that extra “tail” it has going to the left)

An adorable bookmark with chibi versions of the characters in their Monster World outfits (including the oft-forgotten Miho!), complete with little dice on the end (note: keep away from cats who like dangles)

A magnet you shouldn’t stare at too long, lest you get MIND CRUSHED!

A book explaining the meanings of the Tarot Cards

A sticker crossing over Yu-Gi-Oh! with Sailor Moon, with Seto as Tuxedo Mask and Atem as Sailor Moon, holding the Millennium Rod. I have some... thoughts... about it, but it’s generally well-done, a quality sticker, and funny at a bare minimum

The actual Hocus Pocus zine, filled with all kinds of fan art, fanfiction, and other fan creations.

A “spell book” with absolutely GORGEOUS freaking art on the cover

A pin of... somebody (the white haired character with a pink face and red eyes. Is it Bakura? Is it Pegasus? I have no idea)

A pink “Anzu” chain featuring a tiny bottle of pink glitter, a feather charm, and a witch hat charm (which I assume is a nod to Anzu’s RPG character, an Elven Mage) - unfortunately the leather strap popped out of the jump spring when I tried to put it on, but it’s an easy enough fix since I have jewelry tools.

All the little jewelry bits came inside those gorgeous drawstring bags you see next to the Tarot Deck-- that same gauzy material most jewelry bags are made of, but with a beautiful metallic screen printing on it that looks like coral or branches of a tree or something. There’s also another, smaller one that has gold roses with silver leaves; reminds me of one of the Twelve Dancing Princesses books.

Okay, so let’s start with the zine itself. I’ll get to the Tarot Deck and Spell Book in another post.

The zine got delayed a bit due to some contributors unfortunately dropping out, but as soon as I heard (and they did have pretty immediate response times on social media and through email), they already had the empty slots filled, so that was reassuring.

Of what ended up in the zine, the art is phenomenal. There’s honestly nothing I can say I dislike at all in terms of the art. My absolute favorite is Magi Magi  ⭐️ Magician Girls by @jujuoh​; I’m still trying to figure out who each of the “Sailor Senshi” are! (I recognize all of the “Magician Girls” and Mahad, plus Lily, but I’m not sure about the other three in the back. If you know, please tell me!)

What isn’t art is fanfiction though, and here’s where things get a bit tricky for me personally, as I am a devourer of the written word, a librarian by trade, and an editor by profession (part-time). 

At the start of the zine, there are the following tags:

I can understand using the dub names, if the belief is that more of the contributors and readers will use/prefer them. Of course, that makes me the reader think that if a fic is tagged with, say, Duke x Rebecca, then I won’t see the names Ryuuji and Rebecca in the story instead. This is I think why the fandom ‘ship names, like Puzzleshipping and Prideshipping make more sense here, but I get why some people won’t know what ‘ships are what based off those names.

Second thing is that there are NO het ships of any kind on this list outside of Duke x Rebecca, and the fic isn’t really “shippy” at all. That kind of bugs me.

Also, despite Yu-Gi-Oh being about Yuugi, Jounouchi/Joey, Anzu/Téa, Honda/Tristan, Ryou, and Kaiba, with appearances by such famed and important characters as Mai, Pegasus, Isis, Rishid, and Malik, there are scant mentions/depictions of many of them. Anzu, I think, got depicted twice in fanart (I’m counting a comic as fanart) besides the back cover; Isis twice; Mai once. Mana/Black Magician Girl appeared the most out of any female character.

Despite the above list of tags, not all of them actually appear in the zine. So if you found your OTP in this list and flipped through trying to find the tag, you might be sorely disappointed. Now, that is assuming that they don’t appear in the stories based on the tag; if they did appear but they weren’t properly tagged, I don’t know about it.

There is a note indicating that the zine didn’t want to impose any styles, ideologies, voices, and formats, which explains why there might be shift in what the tags are vs. what the story uses. However, for a reader, that could potentially be confusing. I mean, it’s a fanzine, so theoretically anyone receiving/reading it should know that Ryuuji = Duke and so forth, but not everyone will. Your friendly neighborhood Tumblr Librarian would like to remind you that zines are often ordered by/donated or gifted to/end up in libraries, and that means people who are unfamiliar with a fandom might pick it up the way they would any other book or magazine.

Finally, while I’m 100% fine with a zine not imposing rules about names, ‘ships, etc., I do think basic grammar is a must. Sentences should end in periods, the font should be legible and printed clearly in a dark ink on a light background, and if you have a piece of dialogue “like this,” it should end in an attribute tag, like so:

“First, I’ll need to get some gold,” Yuugi explained. “Then I’ll need to buy a potion and two elixirs.”

GRAMMAR IS NOT A STYLISTIC CHOICE. It exists to make things readable. (Can you tell I really dislike those pretentious authors who think that capital letters represent The Man or something, or that one space after a period is simply too New School?)

If this is somehow difficult to enforce/gently suggest, an editor is warranted. That editor should have English as their first language and be intimately familiar with both the fandom and the written word. With fanfic online, if I see something that refuses to use periods or doesn’t properly space out its paragraphs (or whatever), I can just click back and be done with it. No harm, no foul to anybody. But with a zine I’ve paid for? I expect to be able to read a good percentage of the stories regardless of whether or not they’re my favorite genre/’ship/tropes. In fact, I feel like being able to read 100% of the zine is warranted, all other things being equal.

These tags are at the BOTTOM of the first page of a story, when they should be at the TOP.  

The zine is written in English, by/for English-speaking audiences. We read left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Important information like tags should be presented at the top. Imagine if an archive like AO3 or FFnet hid that information inside a story rather than on a fandom listing page, or a search result page? You’d spend a lot more time sifting through things you really don’t want to read.

As far as the tags go, many fics have multiple tags, which makes sense; plenty of stories can easily fall into two genres, maybe more if you’re pushing it. But these are one-shots (short stories), and I really don’t expect a given story to have more than three tags. 

The majority of the stories (8) were tagged Alternate Universe, with only one Hurt/Comfort fic and NO fics using the Afterlife tag that appeared in the beginning. Not to mention, there are plenty of other (hugely popular) genres that aren’t represented at all, like Drama, Romance, or even Comedy. 

I’m not sure if the “theme” is meant to be magic (Hocus Pocus being the title and all), or simply a nice nod to the magical nature of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, but you’d think there’d be more of a balance between in-universe stories and AUs than such a preponderance of AUs over anything else.

Bear in mind that many of the stories were cross-tagged, so an AU might also feature Action/Adventure, or a Slice of Life just happens to be an AU as well.

I don’t have anything against AUs. But if I buy a fandom zine, I want to read stuff featuring the characters, situations, and themes presented in the original fandom, not necessarily people wearing “masks” of those characters but otherwise not acting like them at all.

That being said, I personally differentiate alternate universe stories from alternate timeline stories, where you ask a crucial “What If,” like “What if Atem never forgot his name?” or “What if Atem won the Ceremonial Duel?” or something like that, and canon DIVERGES from a specific point, even one that happened “off-screen,” like the real events leading up to Zork’s original sealing, etc.

I do like how there was more Gen than I initially realized, but it’s harder for me (personally) to enjoy Gen when it’s AU.

There should be additional tags. Some fics had crass/foul language, but there was no “Rating” system in place to indicate that (the MPAA/Fiction Ratings systems have simplified letters to tell you whether there will be mentions of things like sex/nudity, crass/foul language, drug use, and/or violence; tags help clarify WHICH ones will be present for fanfic). Basically, a fic in a zine should utilize the same tags it would on an archive like FFnet or AO3.

Ship tags indicate there will be some level of romance/sex: Name x Name (romantic/sexual), Name & Name (platonic/friendly), or Name/Name (romantic/sexual/usually same sex). If the tags are used to indicate which CHARACTERS are in a story instead (versus pairings), that’s just confusing.

Quiet Friend and Return, Regain, Refresh don’t have any ‘ship or genre tags at all; the latter story only has trigger warnings, which is also confusing.

My favorite stories of the bunch (bearing in mind I did not read any ‘ship stories, for the most part):

A Stranger to Your Soul by Inkyrius - The fandom needs more Mokuba fic. ‘Nuff said.

Two Roads Converge by @mainstream-deviant​ - freaking adorable, with a touch of “omg pls don’t sweet bebby no” because it’s NOT an AU

You Look Familiar by @ink-flavored​ - I’m 100% biased because I’m a cat fan, but this is a well-done AU with a fantasy twist. Joey as a werewolf is downright hilarious. Vivid and adventurous in very few pages.

In summary, a high-quality set of fanmade items, though with some weaknesses that I think could be improved upon for either a second printing or a second edition/volume.

I applaud every single contributor, moderator, and artist for the hard work they have put into such a beautiful package of goods for the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom.

As a Tarot reader, I do have some specific, detailed thoughts on the Tarot deck and its accompanying book, plus the only other book, the “Spell Book” that came with the set. But I’ll save those for another time.

10. I ship the AU versions of them that exist in my head, but not their canon counterparts

Oh! This is actually Honda x Ryou! (Not the yami!Bakura, but our usual Ryou)

In this AU I think of, Ryou is more like a hilariously adorable, air-head type? Like the type who will just laugh off, daydreaming and such. Maybe, like, Rena from Higurashi (but not as deep as her)?? Like, he has his own world or something. And Honda, I always like him, like, the Dad of the group?? Like, Honda has this sense of responsibility to make sure the others’ not getting into trouble HHH and he kinda pays extra attention to Ryou because Ryou’s always strays around and it’s worrying him so much HHHH

So it’s maybe, like airhead/always taking it easy x responsible/always worrying kind of dynamic?? It’s fun to think about!

Honourable mention goes to Vaseshipping, I guess? I actually built up this AU for my OOMF because OOMF loves Vaseshipping, but I started to like it this way too. So, in my head, Mana was the 1st person closest to Atem’s age that he could call a friend. Mana was taken by Mahad from the streets, she was an orphan and didn’t really understand how to behave around royalties so she was kind of being Extra friendly to Atem from the start, and that’s kinda overwhelming for Atem but he soon gets used to it. Atem was always So Serious about everything and sets the standard too high for himself regarding his studies and everything, so Mana was the one who helps him to relax and have fun for a bit. I like this kind of dynamic. It’s the cliche Royalty x Subordinate kinda dynamic.

...If you still want to read more, there’s AnzuMiho... HHHH in my head, Anzu radiates this Girl Crush vibes... She’s popular among the girls and Miho’s like the shy, quiet one that’s totally Crushing on Anzu HARD but Anzu’s oblivious to it. It’s the classic Popular x Shy dynamic for me.

October 2020 Yu-Gi-Oh Random Pairing Challenge

Hello! Welcome to the first monthly Yu-Gi-Oh Random Pairing Challenge, where the pairs are rare and canon relevance doesn't matter!

Here I have a list of 20 random pairings. By random, I mean the character names were literally drawn from a hat to make them.

You can pick any pairing you'd like, or, if you are indecisive like me, you can ask me and I will randomly assign you a number from 1 to 20. And if you don't like that one, that's okay! Any participation whatsoever would be absolutely lovely. Some characters are selected from the first iteration commonly referred to as "Season 0." Some of the characters are "filler characters" from non-canon segments of the anime. If you don't like these characters, feel free to disregard the pairings that include them.

Below that is a list of 5 themes that my dorky IRL friends helped me brainstorm. These are simply an aid for you if you need some direction. Feel free to disregard them if they don't meet your fancy. Again, if you want to use one but don't know what one you want, just contact me and I will randomly assign you one.
