Jaiden wakes up to silence and the lack of warmth beside her. She sits up, her hand hovering over the lack of her partner on the other side of the bed.

She hears no laughter or shouts from her child or her partner's scolding. This is not the first, nor will it be her last, to wake up to this silence.

She looks to her side and notices a paper on top of the bedside table. She grabs it, her lips going upward when she reads of Roier telling her that he'll be doing the tasks for Bobby today since he noticed her apparent exhaustion and the constant fainting the past week. In the corner of the paper, she recognizes Bobby's drawing of herself and a messy scribble that tells her to take care of herself.

Her heart softens at the note, appreciative of Roier and Bobby being worried about her, but her heart is heavy for making them worry about her. She places the note back on the bedside table as she gets out of bed. She stretches her arms while looking outside, noticing it's already the afternoon.

Jaiden presses her lips into a thin line, wondering if she is that tired for her to go into almost a full day of sleep. She brushes her messy hair away from her face while dragging herself towards a nearby mirror. She looks at her messy hair sticking out more so than usual while her shirt is crumpled. The bags under her eyes are visible, but she can hide them away with makeup.

Jaiden does a quick shower to refresh herself and changes into more comfortable clothing since she doesn't think her boys would let her out for the day. However, she adds little makeup to make herself look more presentable. She ties her hair up into a ponytail while wondering where Roier and Bobby headed off for them to take this long to come back.

It's strange to be in this house alone. Whenever she's awake, either Bobby or Roier would be awake too and greet her the moment they see her. She's not used to being alone in this house. She feels like a stranger invading another person's home, even though she, too, now lives here.

Roier and Bobby would not approve of her talking to herself like this if they heard about it. She remembers the several times they remind her she belongs in this home with them. It always makes her heart soften, but the doubt never leaves. She told herself on the first week of having Bobby that she'd move and build her own house because she doesn't like invading Roier's space, but it's been a few weeks since her several reminders and she still hadn't made that house.

It never crosses her mind when she looks at her family because all she can think about is how to be a good mother to Bobby and how to make it up to Roier. Her boy tells her she's the best mom ever, even though she's the only woman on the island. She tells her boy of that and he exclaims to her that it proves his point even more for her to be the best mom.

Her co-parent does everything in the house that she cannot do, not because she can't do all of them, but because he insists he does them. Not only does he cook food for them, but he also does Bobby's quests without question when she is busy that day. He shares all of his items with her, this house, and makes the bed bigger for both of them to fit in instead of letting her sleep somewhere uncomfortable. He always looks out for the best of her and Bobby's needs and wants.

She has only lived with them for a month or two and their hospitality has been the best that ever is. They always make her feel safe and at home. The domesticity quickly grew into the family after a few days of spending time with each other, with a routine they were all familiar with.

She wants to do something for them when they come back from their adventure. She thought of giving them a piece of her feather on the wings, but she hadn't told them about it yet. Maybe she'll tell them someday once her wings have recovered from the explosion she experienced on her first day on the island.

Jaiden goes over the chests, hoping there's anything she can use for her to make the gifts for her boys but she can't think of any. Painting is the second thing that crosses her mind, but she is empty of ideas and might not finish it by the time they come back.

Her stomach rumbles, reminding her that she hasn't grabbed something for her to eat yet. This gives her an idea.

"Maybe I can cook something for them…?" she questions herself. But the only decently cooked meal she made was fried rice mixed along with scrambled egg. The rest of the times she wanted to cook something more complicated, Roier was there right by her side to guide her.

Jaiden hums while she heads over to the kitchen counter and grabs the cookbook, mindlessly flipping through the pages. She looks over the food and the ingredients needed, along with the instructions beside it. She stays standing as she flips through the pages, wondering if there's something she can cook for Bobby and Roier that they'll love. She lingers on the page about Shepherd's pie, carefully reading the instructions and the ingredients needed.

"Okay," she says, while setting the cookbook on the counter for her to read. She repeats the ingredients in her head while going underground to harvest the crops she needs, wanting them to be as fresh as possible. She drops them all at the kitchen counter and then heads over to their refrigerator to grab the ground lamb, milk, and eggs. She then heads over to the cabinets to grab olive oil.

Just in case it doesn't go well, she grabs some extra ingredients. Then she heads over to the sink to wash her hands. Jaiden makes sure she double-checks the ingredients in front of her while looking at the cookbook.

"I think this is all it…" she tells herself as the ingredients lay in front of her. She feels her hands sweating, already nervous at the idea of cooking alone without Roier's guidance.

"I can do this…!" Jaiden hyped herself up, pumping her fist while having a determined expression on her face.

"I can't do this!"

Jaiden would say that she followed the instructions provided in the cookbook. However, there were some… complications during it.

She managed to keep accidentally cutting her fingers whenever she was slicing the vegetables. She struggled to slice the onions because tears kept clouding her vision, making everything twice as hard as it was supposed to be. She forgot to set up a timer, so she accidentally overcooked it longer than it needed to be.

The failure to make the shepherd's pie despite following the recipe in the cookbook leaves Jaiden in a pitiful state of depression and insecurities piling up on her even more. The kitchen is a total mess and it would take her about an hour or two to clean everything up. Despite this, she cleans the kitchen as best as she can while thinking of something simpler she can make for them.

Something less complicated, but enough to fill Roier and Bobby after a long day of adventure…

… Perhaps she's overthinking too much.

She knows Roier and Bobby will eat any meal she gives them, most especially Bobby since he loved being her little judge after trying to cook something with Roier's guidance.

They wouldn't be upset at her if she gave them nothing after the long adventure and tasks. She knows Roier wouldn't be upset because he is still teaching her to cook.

Oh, if only he knew how frazzled she was… He would try not to laugh to save her sanity, but a chuckle would escape from his lips. Afterward, he would calm her mind and comfort her. Roier would then get Bobby to cheer her up if his attempts didn't work well enough.

She takes deep breaths, moving the wet rag in a pattern to help her further relax and not spiral into a panic. Sweat drips down her forehead and she uses her free hand to wipe it away.

She exhales sharply, letting out all the unwanted thoughts swarming in her head.

Once she finishes cleaning the kitchen as best as she can, albeit still messy, and washed the kitchenware neatly, Jaiden turns to the cookbook and flips through the pages. Instead of finding food to impress them that she can make it, she looks for comfort food after a long day of adventures. She goes over soups and stews until she finds Fish Stew. The image provided in the book gives her a better visual of what it would look like in the final product and it looks delicious. Although Jaiden wasn't sure whether Bobby would eat the vegetables in it.

To be more cautious, Jaiden carefully reads the recipe and instructions to make sure it is in her level of cooking—and it looks to be if she took extra time in following the recipe instead of rushing everything.

Luckily, she didn't use all the extra ingredients she brought out while trying to cook the shepherd's pie. Some of them can also be used for the Fish Stew recipe. So all Jaiden had to do was to grab the other ingredients she didn't have yet.

Jaiden went ahead and looked for the rest of the ingredients. Once she found them, she gathered all the ingredients together. She grabs the newly washed kitchenware and pan from the cabinets.

When Roier and Bobby return from their adventure, Jaiden is almost finished making the stew. She hears their loud bickering from outside, mostly Roier reprimanding Bobby over another reckless stunt he did.

She smiles as she focuses on stirring the pan with the spoon.

"Estamos en casa, Jaiden!" Roier announces as he opens the door, with Bobby running around on a dash. "Bobby y yo nos fuimos de aventura!" Bobby hits him with his sword and he curses.

Bobby's wings flap as he announces himself, his demeanor immediately lighting up when he sees Jaiden in the kitchen. He runs towards her as he wraps his arms around his back.

Jaiden is startled by this, too focused on the cooking, so she jumps. "Bobby!" she exclaims as she turns around to face her son, who is covered in bandages and bruises. She looks over at Roier and he is in the same condition, although worse for him. Both of her boys are grinning. "How is my little dragon? Did you have a fun adventure with Roier today?" she asks while resting her hand on his head and rubbing it slowly.

Bobby nods as he takes out his notepad and pencil to write down his response. "Si! Apá and I went to lots of dungeons!"

"Oh, really?" She smiled. "I wish I would've gone on the adventure with you both. It would've been another family day out."

Bobby shakes his head. "It's fine, Mamá. You needed to sleep a lot!" He frowns as he looks at her and sees the bandages wrapped around her arms. "... You're hurt…"

"Oh, Bobby…" She softens. She kneels to kiss him on the forehead. "Thank you for worrying about me, but I'm fine now."

Bobby still looks at her with worry, but he nods. He sniffs the air and turns his gaze towards the oven. He writes down his question. "Is Mamá cooking something?"

"Yes!" she says before remembering about the stew. She quickly stands up and turns to see Roier holding the spatula as he continues to mix the stew for her.

He turns off the stove once he believes it to be done. Roier scoops a little of the stew and brings it up to his lips. He hums in delight. "This is good, Jaiden!" he complimented her as he turned to her. "You made this on your own?"

"Uh, yeah…" She nods, suddenly shy about her cooking, even though he has already tasted both her good and bad cooking. "I was supposed to make shepherd's pie, but…" Her gaze moves towards the half-burnt and messy-looking shepherd's pie, "it didn't end out so well."

Roier follows her line of sight and looks at the messy result. He nods solemnly, understanding the struggles to make it when he was not at an advanced level of cooking back then. However, he is relieved not to see any long-lasting injuries on her. But he frowns when he sees the cuts and barely hidden burns under the bandages wrapped around her. It's sloppy—she didn't take care of it enough and he winces when he sees the first-degree burns and knows how much it hurts to move it.

"Ven aquí, Jaiden." He gestures for her to sit on the chairs in the dining room.

"I'm fine, Roier," she reassures him as she raises her hands, but he remains silent. She sighs as she lowers her hands. "Alright…"

Jaiden moves as she sits down on the chair and Bobby closely follows her, sitting on the chair next to her. He moves the chair closer so he can wrap his arms around her waist and nuzzle her stomach. She smiles as she rests her hand on his head.

Roier washes his hands before heading over to the cabinets to take out the medkit, then he walks towards them to grab the chair to sit down next to her on the opposite side and drops the medkit on the table. He is careful when he holds her arm as he unwraps the already-loose bandages. "¿Has enfriado la quemadura bajo agua fría?" he asks while his other hand opens the medkit to grab Polysporin to treat the burns and other minor injuries she has.

"Yeah." Jaiden nods as Roier sets her unbandaged arm on the table, wincing from the cool surface. He opens Polysporin to put some of them on his finger.

"Esto va a picar, Jaiden," he warned her before spreading the ointment around the burns. Jaiden flinches in pain and Roier mutters an apology as he continues spreading it towards her minor cuts when using the knife.

The ointment stings, but it doesn't make Jaiden flinch as much as when he first put it on her skin. He stays quiet as he treats her minor burns and cuts and wraps them in new bandages once he is finished. Jaiden lifts her hand away from Bobby's head to set it on the table. Roier unwraps the bandages, and he does the same thing to her other arm. He puts an ointment around her minor burns and cuts, slowly rubbing them for a few minutes until he finds it satisfied enough to wrap them in new bandages.

"There!" He nods in approval once he knows Jaiden's injuries have been tended, his shoulders finally relaxing. He slumps on the chair, suddenly exhausted.

"Thank you, Roier," she says while moving to put her hand on top of his.

Roier looks at Jaiden and he softly smiles. "It's nothing, Jaiden. No me gusta verte lastimada."

Bobby nods as he rises himself, unwrapping his arms around Jaiden to write on his notepad. "¡Sí! No me gusta ver a Mamá lastimada."

Jaiden laughs. "You boys are so sweet." Bobby's stomach rumbles and Jaiden smiles. "Lucky for you, Bobby, you don't have to wait too long," she says as she stands up. Roier and Bobby stand up as well, but she makes them sit down.

She heads over to the stove and looks at the fish stew, noticing it has already cooled down. Jaiden does the finishing touches by squeezing lime around the stew and sprinkling the spring onions. She wears a mitten glove to hold the pan as she heads over to set it on the table.

Roier and Bobby gasp when they see the results of her hard work. Bobby immediately tries to taste it by dipping his finger, but Roier grabs his arm before he can taste it. "¡Lávate las manos primero, pinche Bobby! Tus manos están muy sucias ahora mismo," he scolded.

Bobby sticks his tongue at Roier but gets off to wash his hands in the kitchen. Roier does the same, but he grabs three plates and utensils for them to use before setting them on the table. Jaiden scoops some rice from the rice cooker into the bowl and then sets it on the table before sitting down.

Bobby vibrates in his seat, his tail wagging behind him as he stares at the fish stew. His mouth is salivating the longer he stares. He waits once they're all seated before he scoops some of the stew and rice onto his plate. He brightens when he takes a spoonful of stew mixed with rice in his mouth. He immediately writes in his notepad. "It's good, Mamá!"

"¡Sí! ¡Sí!" Roier nods as he grabs another bite. "Está muy bien. Very nice."

"Thank you…" she croaked while feeling tears prickle the corner of her eyes.

Jaiden smiles as she watches Roier and Bobby eat the stew she made. All her efforts to make something for them paid off. Their smiles and laughter are her reward and it's all she needs from them.

She looks at the fish stew she made and takes a bite while listening as Roier and Bobby retell her the adventures they had.

Bobby fast scribbles on his notepad to draw out the scenario while Roier covers it when he doesn't like what Bobby drew. Roier exaggerates his achievements, only for Bobby to rebut it by telling what had really happened. Jaiden laughs as she watches Roier and Bobby bicker constantly, the stew and rice on their plate long forgotten now that the family is complete.

A/N: not entirely whump on the physical side, but more on the emotional side. i hope you enjoyed reading my entry for whumptober 2024 day 5! i'm so sorry it took me long to release this. i went out and finally got the spine x-ray results i took last year... and i have thoracic dextroscoliosis. at least i now know why my back has been hurting for years.

anything that q!jaiden did in relation to the cooking is all based on the instructions i found online. i specifically picked out food that were also on the food mods on qsmp. here are the recipes q!jaiden made for shepherd's pie and fish stew!
