Did you ever get around to playing Undertale/Deltarune or is your computer still, like, a block of cheese stapled to half an ipod or something
oh geez not this again
I wasn't kidding when i said that it would take me a few years. Did i ever say that? Am i misremembering things? Am i confusing what i have said with what i unconsciously want to have said, unbeknownst to my conscious self? Am i thinking too much about this? Whatever.
Anyway, i'm still using the same Chromebook i've been using for years. Frankly, i'd probably be better off with a block of cheese stapled to half an iPod, since then i could at least use the cheese to bribe white people to further my goal of getting a computer that isn't hella obsolete. That being said, i have been able to clear up space on the drive—sometimes i've gotten it up to 3GiB free, but right now it's hovering around 1.1GiB free.
However, the fact that my computer is obsolete isn't really particularly relevant to the fact that i can't play the games in the series (besides, i know that Undertale at least is made with an engine, and engines have a tendency to support obsolete things like OpenGL). Money's not an issue either, since i plan to obtain the games in ways that won't support the hostile businessman who sells them. So the only thing that's standing in the way of me playing the games is that, for my particular situation, doing so would force me to publicly reveal information that would completely and entirely eviscerate my reputation; therefore, i need to build up my reputation to the point where i can afford to take such a serious hit to it.
(I should remind you that me playing through the games in the series is not going to make me stop battling against spoilers (bar the possible situation that me playing through the series changes what is and isn't a spoiler). It's probably only going to make me more likely to battle, since i'll probably understand all the more subtle references that people make that i don't realize are references now.)
Anyway, what happened recently to motivated you to ask about this again? (And why'd you say "Undertale/Deltarune" instead of saying "the Undertale series" and saving yourself a syllable?)
#Ask#Computers#My computer suddenly stopped connecting to WiFi when writing this post and wouldn't reconnect. I spent an hour trying to fix the bloody pr#oblem before i eventually rebooted my computer. That fixed it; i suspect there was some kind of hardware issue going on. Whatever it was#t was _definitely_ a problem with my computer instead of with the WiFi network. I guess that's further evidence in favor of replacing this#chunk of scrap. (Though when i do i plan to turn this chromebook into a web server to get off of GitHub Pages where my website is currentl#hosted.)

surprise
summary ― you come over to australia to surprise sam
pairing ― sam kerr x reader
warning/s ― fluff, pregnancy
based off this request
The drive from the airport to the hotel was short enough, the passing buildings keeping your mind at ease, your hand resting on your small bump. You had been fortunate enough with the travel from Heathrow over to Melbourne. The flight was surprisingly easy, considering you were just hitting your fifth month of pregnancy.
You had arrived back in Australia just after nine pm, lucky enough to call your wife before she was set to go to bed, wishing her good luck for her game tomorrow. You had been as sneaky as you could be, paying the ridiculous added fee to have wifi on board the plane so you could still text Sam - not wanting to make her suspicious. It also helped that you could text everyone who had helped you get over here to make sure everything was okay on their end.
She currently believed you were at your shared home back in London, her Chelsea teammates, Millie and Guro babysitting you whilst she was away. Although the original plan had always been for you to come, once you had found out you were pregnant Sam suddenly got very protective. She researched everything on both the baby’s safety and yours and had learnt that flying could cause problems for both of you. If Sam was anything, stubborn was her biggest trait - and she had decided that it was too dangerous for you to be fighting back and forth with the baby.
You let her have this, deciding that she would eventually back down and be okay with you flying.
She didn’t back down, and you both had to say your goodbyes as she made her way over to Denmark in October. Although she was only gone for a couple of days, you hated it. You hated waking up to an empty bed, you missed the way she would rest her hand over your stomach, as she ran her fingers along it. You missed the way she’d give you a kiss on the lips, before bending down to kiss your stomach too. You just missed her, and although Sam would tease you about it constantly - you knew she missed you too.
The second she came home, you had decided that you couldn’t do this distance again and set up a doctor's appointment during one of her training sessions.
The appointment was simple enough, you asked every question under the sun about flying whilst pregnant, and the dangers that may arise if you were, Your doctor answered every single one - not a hint of judgement in her voice as she helped lessen your stress.
After hearing her give you the all-clear for international flying, you shot right home calling up Alanna to get her to help you book everything for the game. You were a little disheartened when you realised the flight Sam was on was completely booked, as well as every other flight that day and the next couple of days after.
You almost gave up, until Alanna found a flight that would arrive the night before their game against Sweden. You booked that same night, and Alanna sent an email to whoever was dealing with accommodation to let them know that you would be joining.
During the rush of looking for flights, you had decided that you would surprise Sam - you wanted to see her face as she realised you were there, cheering her on. Alanna agreed, and let them know that you would require a room to yourself for the first night you landed in Australia but after that - well, it was obvious you’d be rooming with Sam after that.
So, like planned Sam and you had said your goodbyes - Sam kissing you and your belly over and over again. You both gave sad smiles, as she waved goodbye and made her way onto the plane. You knew logically you would be seeing her in just a few days, but any distance was enough to make you upset.
The hotel came into sight soon enough, the Matilda’s team had sorted a private transfer for you - which you were forever grateful for, your body aching and in need of a warm shower and a comfy bed.
The lift takes you straight up to your level, your suitcase trailing behind you as you scan your key card and open the door. The lights blind you for a few seconds, blinking a few times for you to adjust to the new lighting. The door shuts behind you with a small click, the bed looking perfectly comfy as you flop backwards onto it. A sigh leaves your lips as you close your eyes once again.
Although your body clock was technically still on ‘London’ time, your pregnancy body clock was constantly tired, a small stretch of your limbs before you pulled yourself up once again. Although you were one quick blink away from falling asleep, you forced yourself into the shower - washing away the last twenty-four hours. You make your way back to bed, your head hitting the pillow and sleep comes instantly.
…
A knock interrupts you, your phone dropping from your hand and onto the bed, as you make your way to the door. Alanna and Caitlin standing on the other side, smiles on both their faces as you pull them into a group hug.
They follow you back into the room, the door closing as you sit down on the bed, Caitlin joining you as Alanna stays standing. They ask how you’ve been, and how the flight was as you ask them about training and this afternoon's game. Caitlin’s hand had joined yours on your stomach, the baby giving you both a small kick - Caitlin’s mouth dropping open.
“I felt that!” she practically screams, you laugh along as the baby kicks once again.
The three of you continue to talk for a few minutes, discussing your plans for this afternoon. Alanna and you agreed that it would be easier if took another private transfer to the stadium, figuring it’d save the hassle of waiting for an Uber but also keep you away from Sam (not wanting to ruin the surprise).
The mention of the striker gets both girls gloating on how mopey your wife had been the past of days. Always mentioning how much she missed you and the baby; you laugh along with them but feel a sense of pride fill your heart.
God, you loved that woman.
Soon enough the two Matidas say their goodbyes, you wishing them both luck and telling them to look after Sam for you. The door shuts behind them, and the room falls to a silence. Nerves of the game now erupting in your stomach. You had been so caught up in trying to keep the surprise from Sam that you hadn’t thought about how’d she react.
Would she be mad that you went against her word? You knew that the doctor had given you the all-clear, but Sam was still worried - and to be fair she had only asked you this one thing. You know how much Sam would stress about things, and her knowing you were home safe was probably one of the only factors in her life right now that she could count on. Except you were now here, thousands of kilometres away from where she had left you.
Your thoughts get interrupted by another knock on the door, this time the driver from last night ready to take you over to the game. You both chat about the game as you make your way downstairs towards the car. Katrina’s mum, Linda and Harper were downstairs waiting for you and you couldn’t help but smile as Harper let out a squeal once she saw you. Throwing her arms up for you to grab her.
You of course do, planting kisses all over her face, her gigglings filling the reception. The three of you then make your way into the car, The whole way to the stadium music that katrina had made just for Harper was playing, you and Linda getting involved with and singing with her. Her giggles brought smiles to everyone in the car.
The stadium was getting busy as you arrived, gold and green filling the areas as fans took to the stands. You thanked the driver, as the three of you hopped out - Harper wanting to go back in your arms but her grandmother telling her to just hold your hand to give you a break. As much as you love Harper, you sent her a thankful smile. Carrying your baby was straining enough.
The seats were great, the excitement of the crowd only growing your excitement too. The thought of seeing Sam again kept a smile on your face. You have taken the job of keeping Harper occupied before the game, her colouring book laying on the chair as the two of you colour it in. Linda braiding her hair whilst she was distracted.
“You excited for the baby?” she asked, you lift your head as you nod.
“Yeah, Sam and I have talked about having kids for years” you look back down at Harper, somehow your smile growing even bigger. “I mean I love kids, always wanted some of my own but didn’t know if that was possible you know?”
She nods her head, knowing exactly what you meant. Her own daughter had the exact same thoughts, decided to go through IVF without a partner and out came Harper.
“You’re going to be a great mother”
You blame the pregnancy hormones when the tears start welling up in your ears, she notices straight away, a small laugh leaving her lips as she pulls you into a hug and rubbing your back.
“Oh, honey. There’s nothing to cry about” You let her hold you a little longer, shaking your head as you laugh in agreement. You start to wipe the tears away as you both pull back.
“I know. I know. I just - Thank you. I means a lot, especially coming from such a great mother and grandmother”. The two of you continue to bond over baby related topics, and before you know it the cheering of the stadium starts intensifying.
You feel your emotions starting up again as you spot Sam coming onto the field, Harper jumping in her seat - both yours and her grandma’s hands holding onto her so she doesn’t fall - as she spots her mum.
The starts before you know it, everyone watching every move made. You’re thankful that you have a good view as you watch Sam on the field. After being with Sam for so many years you could almost sense what she was thinking on the field, watching how she watches where the ball goes.
Thirty five minutes in and still no goal, you could see both teams were getting frustrated.
You watch the ball get kicked to Sam, she passes it to Katrina who’s kicks it - an opposing team member getting it before Cailtin manages to steal it off them. She holds it for a few seconds before passing it to Hayley - the crowd starting to pick up with our team being so close to the net, you can’t help but join them.
You spot the second Hayley clocks it towards Sam, the way the ball falls into the goal, the crowd screaming their heads off, you included. Harper jumps up and down, squealing as you spin her up and plant kisses on the side of her head.
“Did you see that baby!” you happily squeal, her nodding her head as she throws her arms in the air. The surrounding fans that heard the interaction joining in with us in celebration.
Half time comes, the only goal being from Sam. You offer to grab the three of you drinks, but Linda tells you to stay with Harper and she’ll go get them You don’t argue because you were more than happy to hang out with Harper, but also you could feel yourself getting tired again.
Harper seems content enough with sitting in your lap, playing with your hair before moving her hands down to you belly.
“Baby?” her eyes don’t leave your stomach, as you run your hands over her little braids.
“Yeah, there’s a little baby in there Har” The baby gives a little kick, Harper looking up at you - her eyes completely wide open.
“What that?”
You laugh a little at her reaction, bringing one of your hands onto of her’s.
“It was the baby kicking, they were just saying hello”
She takes the answer with a serious nod, bringing her lips to your stomach and planting a kiss on them. “‘Ello baby” the baby kicks once again, almost in response. You let Harper continue to rub your belly, talking to it as you watch over the field.
Linda returns just as they blow the whistle for the start of the second half, although when you go to move Harper you both realise she’d fallen asleep.
The game moves on, and when that final whistle goes off Australia had won, four to nothing. The crowd screams with pride - the girls taking it all in. You don’t know how but Harper manages to stay sleep during the whole celebration, you rub her back as you stay seated - not wanting to awake her just yet.
The crowds start to move out, Linda saying she would meet the girls downstairs in the change room. You nod your head and tell her you’d stay here until Harper wakes up. You look down at the sleeping child in your lap, her head resting on your chest as you feel her breath on your shoulder.
You gave her a few more minutes, and just as you went to shake her awake she let out a small yawn as her eyes blinked open.
“Hey babygirl” you whisper, not wanting to startle her, she blinks her eyes a couple more times, nuzzling her head into your chest.
“Y/n?” her little voice makes you ‘coo’ as you tighten your grip just slightly.
“Yeah baby, it’s me”
“Mumma?”
“Yeah baby, we’re gonna see mumma. But I need you to let me get up okay” She nods her head, as she helps you move her over to the spare seat next to you. You bring yourself up as your stretch, running your hands down you stomach. You watch as Harper rubs her eyes, before grabbing her under the armpits and pulling her back into your arms. She rests her head back on your shoulder as you make your way up the stairs and towards the change rooms.
Once you had made it down under the stadium and towards the change rooms, the sounds of the team celebrating got louder and louder. You had almost expected Harper to get more energetic as you got closer, but she seem content with just laying on your shoulder - you didn’t mind either.
You spotted Linda soon enough, the girls in a circle as they celebrated. She catches your eye, and shakes her head as she looks at Harper in your arms - a smile on her face. You can see her hint at asking if you wanted her to take Harper of you but you shook your head, as you give a little bounce in your step.
Look around the circle, a smile on your face. You were so proud of the whole team, as everyone else watching them was. They continued to celebrate, you bopping along to the song they sang - making sure to still support Harper.
You lift your eyes off Harper and immediately catch Sam’s. Her mouth wide open, you watch her blink her eyes twice before breaking away from the circle and running towards you. The crowd seems to catch on as they let out calls and cheers.
“You’re here?” you let out a small laugh, as you nod your head. Katrina had made her way towards you guys too, taking Harper out of your hands.
“I’m here baby” You lip goes inbetween your teeth, the nerves from before coming back. Before you could go to apologise, Sam’s lips are on yours. Her hands grabbing onto your waist to pull you in closer. The cheering for the team manages to get louder, as you continue to kiss your wife.
She pulls away, her eyes slightly watery as she looks you up and down. She bends down, her hands now resting on the sides of your stomach as her lips press against the bump.
“Hi baby” she mumbles onto your stomach, planting a kiss before continuing “I’m so happy that you and your mumma gotta watch me win - even if she’s meant to be resting back home in London” you roll your eyes at the comment, giving a slight tug of her hair that your hand managed to find it’s way into during the whole ideal. She smirks a little at the reaction, coming back up so you were face to face.
“How are you here? We called last night and you were at home”
“I had just gotten off the plane, do you know how hard it is to find a quiet spot in the airport?”
She shakes her head, the smile never leaving her lips.
“You’re absolutely crazy - you know that?
You bring your lips back to hers, “Only for you baby. Only for you”

March 2020:
“Carmy, can you hear me now?” you ask, listening carefully for his response.
“Yeah hold on. Wifi’s shit in this room,” he mumbles. You hear a rustle of sounds and the picture on your phone goes blurry for a second. This is just something you’ve come to accept is a part of your life now as you wait.
Suddenly, the picture is clear again and it looks like Carmy’s in his living room now. He wears a white t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants as he tries to get comfy on the shitty sofa in his Flatiron apartment.
“Ok there we go. I gotta-, yeah, I can hear you now,” he says, finally settling in.
“How are you?” you ask as you grow more sure that you’re going to be able to talk now. “It’s good to see your face.”
“Yeah, no uh. It’s good to see you too,” he replies. “Shit’s so weird right now, huh?”
“Totally,” you agree. “So… what’ve you been up to? I mean… how are you spending your time?”
He sighs, shaking his head, as if to say that he barely knows how to answer that question. He thinks it over before answering with:
“I don’t know. Workin’ on some recipes. Tryin’ not to lose my fuckin’ head. You?”
“Same,” you commiserate. “Though… I don’t know. I’ve kind of been enjoying some of the down time, you know?”
He couldn’t agree less.
Carmy tells you about the recipes he’s working on. You share with him the plot of the show you’re binge watching right now. He tells you he hasn’t really been in touch with family much and you let him know that you’ve been running errands for your parents where you can. It’s a fairly normal conversation for a very uncertain and strange time, but it brings you comfort – talking to Carmy.
You talk about the state of the restaurant industry. The state of the world. The two of you wonder when the restaurant might open back up – if they’ll consider doing to-go’s. He’s not sure and neither are you.
It’s almost two hours later when you realize your phone is dying, and that somehow, time has flown as the two of you have been talking.
“Shit, uh. My phone’s dying. I may have to go,” you say remorsefully.
“Oh yeah! No problem,” Carmy replies, almost apologetically. “And I uh, if I get in touch with the people at World Central Kitchen, I’ll let you know. I’m sure they can always use more chefs and volunteers.”
“No, that’d be great. Uh… before I go,” you start, knowing that you want to tell him this. “I just wanted to say… I’m glad we did this.”
“Yeah me too,” he agrees, and you can tell he means it.
“Maybe… we do it again? Keep each other company… you know. Virtually?” you propose, hopefully.
“Yeah,” Carmy half smiles. “Yeah, I’d like that.”
And as the pandemic drags on, you find yourself FaceTiming with Carmy more and more. Once a week turns into once a week and a consistent exchange of texts. He shares with you the recipes he’s working on. You bounce ideas around with him on dishes he feels stuck on. You send him silly memes and TikToks, even though he refuses to get an account himself. Once a week turns into twice a week, and then phone calls, and soon enough, you don’t go a day without talking to Carmy in some capacity.
You’re not sure how you’ve done it but you think that maybe you and Carmy just might be friends.
May 2020:
“Thanks so much for all the help guys. It means a lot. Especially having two chefs of your caliber,” the volunteer coordinator says, addressing both you and Carmy.
“Listen, we’re just happy to be a part of something right now. With so much going on… it’s hard to know where to begin helping,” you reply with gratitude. You’re genuinely thankful that you’ve been able to be a part of World Central Kitchen’s COVID relief efforts, and you know Carmy feels the same.
“We’ll see you guys next Friday?” the volunteer coordinator asks.
“Heard,” Carmy answers, thanking the coordinator one more time before the two of you leave the building.
Around the corner, there’s a bench that the two of you find. It’s an easy choice to sit down – neither of you are quite ready to go home yet. You sit on opposite sides before removing your masks as Carmy pulls out a pack of marlboros.
“You want one?” he asks you, holding out the pack.
“Yeah,” you agree, taking one from him at a distance. You watch him light up, before handing you the lighter he keeps in his jean jacket pocket.
It’s nice to take a moment to pause. Between the chaos of being in a kitchen again to the chaos of the world around you, it feels good to smoke a fucking cigarette on a street corner with the man that’s so unexpectedly become your friend. The two of you sit in a comfortable silence, just enjoying the sounds of the city, each others’ company, and your fuckin’ cancer sticks.
You break the silence between the two of you, letting out the smallest chuckle.
“What?” Carmy asks you, your laugh garnering his attention.
“It’s just… it’s almost funny,” you say, continuing your giggle.
“What?” he asks you again, a look of amusement on his face. He can’t imagine what must be so funny.
“Just… seeing you here… Mr. Fine Dining…makin’ sandwiches,” you tease playfully. “Thought you were too fancy-pants for that.”
“Fuck off,” he rolls his eyes playfully, sucking on his cigarette as he inhales. You laugh again as he shakes his head, shooting you another look.
He takes his time, exhaling the smoke out in the opposite direction, before addressing your playful remarks.
“Nah. It uh-, actually reminds me of my family’s place a little. Back home,” he shares with you.
It catches you off guard. Carmy rarely ever talks about home, let alone his family.
“Yeah?” you ask curiously, hoping he’ll elaborate.
“Yeah,” he answers with a nod, before placing the cigarette back in between his lips.
To your disappointment, you realize that’s all he’s planning to share. You resign yourself, taking another drag of your cigarette as the two of you smoke to the sounds of the city. After a long shift at the volunteer kitchen, your exhaustion begins to catch up with you. It’s been a few months since you’ve had to stand for that long, and as exhilarating as it’s been, you can feel the fatigue in your back and your feet already.
“So… I was thinkin’ about something,” Carmy says, breaking the silence between the two of you.
You angle your body towards him before asking, “What’s that?”
He shrugs, “I don’t know. Maybe it’s dumb.”
He’s suddenly shy, and your eyes flicker over his cheeks that have turned a darker shade of red than they were before.
“Carmy, what is it?” you ask, leaning towards him, now intrigued.
He avoids your gaze before he replies, “Nah. Nevermind. It’s stupid.”
“No, it’s not! What is it?” you continue to press him.
You’re not going to let this go.
“I shouldn't've said anything.”
He sighs, taking one more drag of his cigarette before leaning forward and tossing it on the ground. His left foot hovers over the cigarette butt as he stamps it out, his forearms resting on his legs as he finally turns to you again.
“I don’t know how you feel about it, and you can totally say no because like… shit’s still fucked, you know but-,” he starts, shyly. Was Carmy about to ask you out?
He pauses, his eyes scanning the pavement beneath his feet before saying, “It’s just-, I’m not like, seeing anyone else in person. Except you.”
“Yeah, no me either,” you agree.
Where was this going?
“Would you maybe wanna-?” he asks, before trailing off, his piercing blue eyes so intense it feels like he’s looking right through you. He nods towards the kitchen before continuing with, “... see each other in person. Like outside of here. As long as we’re being safe you know?”
You nod, quick to put the poor man at ease, and only a little intrigued as to why it was so difficult for him to ask you that.
“Yeah no. I’m not seeing anyone else in person either. And at this point if we had COVID, we’d probably already have exposed each other, right?” you reply.
“Yeah,” he answers.
“Yeah, I’d be down. To… you know. Maybe move some of our FaceTimes… in person, if that’s what you mean,” you agree, a smile on your face.
You’re not sure what you expected, but you weren’t expecting for Carmy to ask you to become his quarantine buddy – even if you’d already kind of been doing it anyways.
“Cool,” he says, taking a breath.
You can tell that it was a big deal for him – to ask you that – even if he doesn’t want to show it.
“Can I walk you home?” he asks.
You smile in return, “Yeah. And if you’re feeling wild… we can… pick something up on the way there. You can come up and hang.”
“No, yeah. That uh-, that sounds great,” he replies, something softer in his eyes this time. “If you don’t mind. I mean-, if you want the company-.”
“Oh shut up, Berzatto,” you roll your eyes at him. You shoot him a look, even though you’re kind of loving this softer side of him.
“I wouldn’t have offered, if I didn’t.”
July 2020:
Carmen Berzatto becomes an unexpected yet pleasantly surprising part of your support system, and your COVID-pod. It’s hard to believe that less than a year ago, you thought the man absolutely hated you. He’s still the hot and cold, emotionally turbulent man you met last October, and he’s also become your friend. You’ve learned that he can be soft, that he’s terribly uncomfortable in any and all social situations, and that he’s the most single-minded, driven, obsessed motherfucker you’ve ever met.
By now, the restaurant has pivoted and reopened for to-gos only. It’s nothing like the fine dining establishment it was before. You’re only open Thursday to Sunday and it’s a much more family style, to-go kit sort of operation these days: to-go cocktail kits, to-go curated menus, to-go assemble your own dishes at home.
It’s strange. And it’s a strange time for all of you.
You’re finished with your shift today, ready to head home and spend the next three days off. You’re not sure when you’ll ever get three days off in a row once all of this is over, so you’ve decided that you’re just going to embrace the slower lifestyle right now. You’ve been more creative in this chapter of your life than you can remember.
“So you layin’ it down for Carmy or what?” a voice asks, jolting you from your thoughts.
“Excuse me?” you snap, turning your head to a very smug looking Nate Walker, stripping off his face mask.
“What the fuck, man?” Tim exclaims, as he’s changing back into his street shoes. “Not okay to say.”
“What?” Nate defends himself. “I’m just wondering who I have to thank. This is the most relaxed I’ve ever seen the boss man.”
You scoff, rolling your eyes, “Really nice, Nate.”
You shake your head, before slinging your backpack over your right arm, exchanging a look with Tim.
“Not that it’s any of your business, but Carmy and I are just friends,” you correct. “Ever think that some time off has been good for all of us and that’s why Carmy’s been chill?”
“‘S not like we’re working at the same capacity we used to be. I think it’s been good for him,” Tim chimes in, trying to offer you a little backup.
“Sure,” Nate replies, unconvinced.
“What’s it to you anyways, Walker?” Tim asks, putting the spotlight on his coworker.
“Nothin’,” Nate replies, defensively. “Just noticed you guys spendin’ a lot of time together lately. Besides, the guy could use a good lay.”
“You’re a child,” you snap with an eye roll. You slide your left arm into the other strap of your backpack, ready to leave. “Now if we’re done with the girl talk, I’m going home.”
As you begin to walk away, you can hear Nate defending himself as Tim points out how inappropriate it was for him to say that to you. You’re grateful for people like Tim, because you’re not sure that Nate would listen to anyone else lower in the French brigade system – let alone a woman.
“We still on for tomorrow?” Carmy asks you, as you're on your way out. He’s still in his chef whites because, as the both of you know, he’s going to be the last person to leave. A smile spreads across your face as soon as you see him.
That’s right. You’re spending your day off tomorrow with him.
“Yeah,” you smile with a nod.
“Mine or yours?” he asks.
You shoot him a look – a ‘I know you haven’t cleaned up your place’ kind of look.
“Mine,” you reply.
“Sweet. There’s a cool market nearby I wanted to check out. I’ll pick somethin’ up on the way,” he says back.
“Heard.”
You wait a beat before adding, “Try not to work too hard, chef.”
He likes that you’re looking out for him.
He smiles, “Heard.”
*
As much as you’ve tried not to let Nate Walker get to you, you can’t stop thinking about what he said the day before. Did people think you and Carmy were sleeping together? Did the whole staff think you were trying to sleep your way to the top? Your mind races, and you notice the anxious feelings you have have settled deep in your chest. Carmy moves around your kitchen, intentionally, and while you’d like to enjoy how happy he looks when he cooks for fun, you can’t seem to shut off your brain.
“You sure I can’t help? I went to culinary school too, yknow?” you ask, trying to put on your best lighthearted tone.
“Nah,” he dismisses, pulling together a sauce in one of the glass bowls you keep in your kitchen for prep.
As Carmy steals a glance your way, he’s surprised to find that whatever weight it seems you were carrying when he first walked in, hasn’t gone away. He returns his focus to the stovetop, shaking the stainless clad frying pan that holds his precisely-cut lardons.
“What’s up?” he asks you, keeping his back to you.
“Uh… nothing,” you reply, trying your best to shake it off.
He knows you’re lying, and he turns to look at you again, more intently this time. Your lips are pressed together in a thin line and there’s a new tension knitted between your brows that’s not normally there. As much as you’re trying not to let it get to you, your face betrays you and he knows that something’s been bothering you all day. He shoots you an unconvinced look and you sigh in defeat.
Since when had Carmy learned what that look meant.
“Just-, you’re gonna think it’s dumb,” you start, almost embarrassed that you have to bring this up to him.
“What’s up?” he asks, patiently.
You shrug, “Just something that Nate said yesterday’s been… bothering me, I guess.”
He rolls his eyes, letting out a dry laugh as he asks you, “Well Nate’s a dick. What’d he say?”
“I-, I don’t know if I should tell you,” you admit hesitantly.
“Why?” he asks, a pang of nerves hitting him right in the gut.
You wait a beat, trying to figure out how best to convey what Nate said without freaking Carmy out.
“He uh… he kind of… suggested that everyone thinks we’re sleeping together?” you say cautiously, your voice going up at the end of the sentence, almost as if it were a question.
“Oh,” is all Carmy manages to get out.
“Yeah,” you exhale.
“Well, we’re not,” Carmy replies, simply.
Right.
“Right,” you agree.
You’re surprised by the feeling of disappointment that wells in your chest in response to Carmy’s reply. This had been eating away at you and for him to shut it down so quickly – like it was that simple – doesn’t quite make sense to you.
Maybe it’s because men never bear the burden of an inappropriate workplace relationship, not that you’re having one with Carmy, but you know it’d be a bigger cost to you than it’d ever be for him.
“I just…” you start, beginning to understand why it’s bothering you so much. “Do you think… like is it a problem that we’re hanging out? I mean, you are kind of my boss and… I don’t know. I guess we never really talked about the ethical implications of… you know. Us. Being friends. And also working together.”
Friends.
Right.
Maybe because it’s because he’s never really had friends, let alone a girlfriend, that catches Carmy off guard.
You’re just friends, motherfucker, Carmy thinks to himself.
It’s like he’d almost forgotten.
Perhaps it’s the isolation – the way of the world right now – but he’s never thought about what you were to him. Ever since the two of you had decided to start spending time together, it had been you and him against a very scary and uncertain world. Carmy’s surprised to find that, hearing it said aloud, friends, leaves him with a feeling of dissatisfaction – like the word friend didn’t quite describe the way he felt about you.
But he’s terrified to think about what that could mean. That anything else would probably scare you away – push you out of his life – and there’s no way in hell he’s going to let that happen right now.
Because he likes this too much.
Because he likes who he is when he’s with you.
Because you’re all he has.
He pushes the thoughts out of his mind for another time, because right now, you’re sitting right in front of him, and he’s got a problem to solve for you.
“As long as we’re professional in the kitchen… I don’t see why it should be a problem,” he says.
You’re not sure how it seems so simple for him, because it doesn’t feel this simple for you.
“Yeah, no. I-, I agree,” you lie.
Carmy returns to what he’s doing, and you accept that that’s probably the full conversation that you’re going to have with him. At least right now. You watch as he continues to cook, pulling together the sauce as he tosses the pasta and cheese in your frying pan. You open up your phone, scrolling through a few social media posts to try your best to get your mind off of your worries as Carmy finishes up in your kitchen.
It’s not long before he’s returned to your small dining table. You set your phone down, watching as he approaches you.
“I remember you mentioning that it’s hard to find a good carbonara so uh… thought I’d make you one,” he says confidently. Carmy hands you bowl containing a perfectly twirled nest of spaghetti, along with a fork he’d gotten from your kitchen.
“How do I know it’s gonna be up to my standards?” you challenge him playfully.
He shoots you a ‘don’t play with me’ kind of look and you giggle in response. You exchange glances with Carmy before messing up the perfectly plated nest by digging your fork into it.
“Make sure you get a little bit of everything,” he reminds you. He watches as you twirl the spaghetti around your fork, making sure to scoop up a bit of crispy guanciale. You lift the fork to your mouth before taking a bite, your eyes closing as the salty, cheesy, bite hits your tongue.
It’s perfect.
“Holy fuck,” you practically moan in response to your first bite. You open your eyes and he smiles back at you, proud of the response he’s earned from you. Your face twists into a look that falls somewhere between ‘this is so good I’m angry and hello, I’ve reached nirvana.’
“This-, please don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m pretty sure your talents are being wasted on fine dining, my friend. This is… this is fucking unreal, dude,” you say, as you continuing processing the most perfect carbonara you’ve ever had in your life.
“No offense taken,” he says.
You shake your head at him, “Best carbonara ever.”
September 2020:
“So we go upstate, and we’re searching for outdoor activities we can do, you know, safely, at a distance, with masks on. And we end up at this goat farm,” Maya says, describing her and her fiance’s last few months spent in upstate New York.
“...Was the goat named Milo?” Carmy asks, a humorous tone to his question.
“Carmy!” you exclaim with a laugh, shooting him a look.
“What?” he asks back.
Both Liz, Maya, and her fiance Patrick send you questioning looks.
“I-, it’s an inside joke,” you explain, shaking your head once again in response to Carmy’s very silly interjection.
“Anyways, it’s so nice to be back in the city. Seriously, Liz, thanks for organizing this,” Maya continues.
“Oh, I’m kind of getting really into this whole cute picnic thing actually,” she replies, in reference to the picnic she’s organized for the five of you. “Plus, the to-go picnic kit has been killing at the restaurant. Thanks for letting me run with that, chef.”
“No, yeah. You’re killin’ it. It was a great idea,” Carmy compliments.
The five of you spend time in the park, catching up and enjoying time spent in person for the first time in a long time. You, Liz, and Carmy have been back at work, pushing through, what will hopefully be, the last month or so in the to-go only business at the restaurant. As the sun begins to come down, you all agree that it’s time to pack it up and go home. You’ve begun to collect all of the trash in a brown paper bag as Carmy offers to take it.
“You sure?” you ask him.
“Yeah,” he answers.
As he takes a walk, in search of the nearest trash can, your friends are immediately on you about whatever the hell it is that you and Carmy are doing.
“So what I’m hearing is… you talk every day, you have inside jokes together, and you’re basically quarantining together. How are you trying to tell us that this man is not your boyfriend?!” Maya exclaims. Her partner shrugs in agreement.
“I know that what Nate said was hella inappropriate, but he’s not wrong… that this is the most I’ve seen him relaxed in… maybe since we met him,” Liz adds in as your friends make their case.
“He seems into you,” Patrick offers.
“I-,” you start, knowing you don’t have much time before Carmy returns. “I don’t know. All I know is… I like what we have. And right now, we’re friends so.”
“God, you’re so good at it,” Maya sighs.
“What?” you ask, looking from her to Liz as they exchange glances.
The both turn to you, before saying in unison, “Compartmentalizing!”
Patrick holds his hands up as he says, “I’m gonna stay out of this one.”
“You ready to go?” Carmy asks, rejoining you and your friends.
You can practically feel Liz and Maya staring at you.
“Yeah,” you reply to Carmy.
You say your goodbyes before going your separate ways, and Maya swears when Carmy isn’t listening that you’re not done talking about this. It’s just been you and Carmy for so long that you hadn’t thought about what it might look like to other people. Now that things were slowly reopening… you were beginning to get more questions, and maybe, you were beginning to have more questions too.
But the last time you’d tried to bring up any conversation about your relationship with Carmy, he’d shut it down and distracted you with the best carbonara you’ve ever had in your life. Not that you were complaining, definitely not, but you were hesitant to bring it up any time soon. As Carmy looks at you, there’s something about the way you look against the backdrop of the city, the setting sun, and the sparkling lights, that catches him off guard. He’s not ready to part ways with you yet.
“Can I walk you home?” Carmy offers, hopefully.
“Sure,” you nod.

fem*Reader x Changbin
YOU have been stressed from work and just life in general....not to mention you've had the hardest time trying to get off for the past few days. But, fatefully, your wifi goes out in your apartment, so you go to your friend just to use his wifi. So, why can't you focus?
*WARNING*
contains: fingering, over-clothes stimulation, teasing, names (bunny), and consent was mentioned, let me know if I missed anything.
WC: 1.5k
****
Your muscles tense with agony. The last few days have consisted of you trying your absolute hardest to get off. Porn is a no-go, smut isn’t helping, and your imagination has run blank, it's beyond frustrating. Having to deal with this problem AND having to work is making your body physically shrivel up.
At the moment you're sitting on the couch with a mindless TV show in the background, you stopped paying attention a while ago, your computer taking up the entirety of your view. The bright glow of the computer consumes you until you hear a loud bang coming from the TV. It was loud enough to lift your head up from your computer to look at the tv, it's another action scene, but it sucks up enough of your attention.
“What are you doing?” Your head whips around fast to see Changbin in a fitted T-shirt and baggy gym shorts enter the room. Compared to you, both your outfits seemed comfortable. You were wearing a black tank top and shorts and your hair was pinned up in a messy bun, while your glasses rested on the bridge of your nose. It was hot and both of you had no intention of leaving the house.
“Nothing, just working” you resume to the document you were working on.
You were just using your friend’s Wifi, for the time being, yours had unexpectedly just stopped working. Your friend offered for you to use his, at least for today, so you could get some work done.
“You look tense” You are tense, tense from all the denied orgasms, tense from your workload, tense that you can’t get yourself off! His simple words make you verbally groan and close your computer in annoyance. It makes Changbin jump, did he do something wrong?
You look back at him, noticing his worried eyes, “Sorry, I’m just stressed.”
His body relaxes slightly, realizing that he didn’t do anything wrong, but his brain still ponders on how he could help you.
Maybe he can help you. Hurriedly he comes around to the couch sitting right beside you and slamming his hands on his thighs. You look at him confused. He sighs and grabs you by your feet to guide your legs across his thighs. It makes you yelp and he only giggles at the sound. Your body is completely turned to face him while your back rests comfortably on the couch. Changbin starts to rub gentle circles over your exposed legs.
A mix of emotions runs through you; confusion and enjoyment battle each other out in your mind. As Changbin's hands gently dig into your skin, all your confusion is thrown out the window and is replaced by pure relaxation.
The tense muscles in your legs begin to melt away as he continues his tender assault. Your body starts to sink into the couch, the cushions enveloping your body.
“Feel good?” he asks, and even though your eyes are closed you can hear the cheekiness in his tone.
You sigh as a confirmation. His hands roam from your thighs to your legs and ride back up to your mid-thigh. Making sure not to reach any place that would make you uncomfortable, but also keeping in mind all your tense spots.
But it's not enough, his hands feel too good and your muscles are only starting to relax. If you really want to relieve this stress you need to feel it more. “Higher” Your nose scrunches when you feel his movements halt.
“Are you sure?”
“Please Bin, I’m really stressed right now and this is actually helping” You can tell he’s still not sure by the way his brows furrow and how he watches his hand on your skin. “If you're not okay with this then tell me now, but please Binnie. This is actually really helping”
He can see the plea in your eyes, how can he say no when you call him that name? “Okay, turn on your stomach.”
At first, you're confused, but you comply, taking your bun out and glasses off in the process. Now, you're lying on your stomach, completely facing down, while Changbin cages his thighs on top of you. He presses the palms of his hands down onto the middle of your back and slowly messages.
The pressure makes you groan, it's a relief you didn’t really comprehend you needed. You can feel his body slowly relax onto your legs as he works pressure into your tense body. Sighs leave your lips and your eyes close shut.
Changbin can see the way your body reacts to his touch and it’s physical torture for him. He can feel you relax and melt into his touch. He wants to keep touching you, but he wants more. He loves the signs that leave your lips, but he wants to hear more than just moans.
Another small sigh leaves your parted lips when his hand reaches your lower back. “Is it alright if I go lower?” you hum in acknowledgment.
Changbin wiggles his way down your body, this way his hands have perfect access to the lower half of your body. His hands work their way down your body, rubbing, squeezing, and caressing each muscle. He works his way from your thighs to the curve of your ass, to your hips.
The pleasure of his hands on your skin overwhelms your senses and the relaxing feeling of the pressure has subsided, now the only feeling you can focus on is the immense need to feel his skin on yours. The thought makes a moan slip.
Both of you are too stunned to speak. You're too embarrassed to make any excuse, so you just close your eyes and pray that he didn’t hear it.
But he definitely did. That sound almost made him groan, but he refrained knowing he wanted to make this moment last as long as possible.
So instead of saying anything, he continued meddling with your clothed body. He moved his hands slightly further up to rub where your folds met your thighs.
The sudden feeling of the pads of his fingers touching your most sensitive area made you gasp. Feeling the tip of his finger slide up and down made you feel just how soaked you were. You didn’t realize how desperate you were until you started moaning and shivering in his touch. He hasn’t even truly touched you yet.
You can feel the tips of his fingers reach for the rim of your shorts, you lift your hips as a silent confirmation for him to keep going. Within seconds he is ripping your shorts and underwear away from your body and kneading your exposed skin.
Suddenly you feel the sharp sting of his palm slapping your ass, the pain quickly is replaced by pleasure as he rubs the same spot. You didn’t expect the sound to leave your lips, the sudden gasp turned into a moan, it both surprised you, but it only encouraged Chanbin to keep going.
His fingers dig into your skin, surly he’ll leave marks in the morning. His fingers briskly find their way back to your soaked folds, rubbing them expertly. “Tell me you want me to keep going”
The thought he still has your consent in his mind add warmth to the pleasure he’s giving you, “please”
His fingers press a little hard against your folds making them slip down to your clit. “Jesus you're dripping. I can feel it through your shorts.” he’s right, you are soaked, more soaked than you have been in the past few days.
“More. please. More” words are muffled into single responses, the pleasure making your brain foggy.
“More? You want more?” you nod your head as a simple response. “Then lift this pretty ass” you oblige without a single obligation, lifting your hips so he can glide your shorts off your body, leaving you naked from the waist down in front of him.
His fingers skillfully find the little thrumming bead, but he doesn’t stay there for long. A single digit tests your flooded entrance, dipping just a tiny only a single finger in. relief washes over you, you didn’t realize how much you needed this.
Delicately he plays with the insides of your walls, sliding his digit in and out of you, and curling the tip of his finger. His little game is making you squirm in his touch. Without warning he adds another finger and starts pumping the two digits into you. Finding a delicious pace.
Sigh and moans mix as one in an unforgettable song.
His thumb comes into play as it finds the desperate bead begging for attention. His fingers and thumb continue their mix while pleasure surges through you. You’ve held out for so long, the tension building up within you for too long, and his fingers play such a torturous game. It's not long before you're barrelling over the edge with a scream of his name.
His movements slow, but he keeps his fingers securely inside you. Your walls clench around his fingers still feeling the afteraffects of your orgasam. “Oh bunny, did you think I was finished with you?”
You tilt your head to the side, trying to get a better look at him. “You have no idea how long I’ve waited to touch you. I’m not letting you go until both of us are undoubtedly satisfied”
a/n: I know I haven't posted in a while, I've been working on like 8 stories at once. I have no idea when these other ones are gonna get done \_* *_/...but they are in the works! Back to You Again
Tangerine x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Injury, mention of blood, mention of death/fear of death, arguing/bickering, swearing. Serious idiots in love who have a little trouble expressing their feelings and choose the wrong time to do it.
You've been gone a little while. A few months to be specific. Why? Tangerine can only guess, but he's not happy about it.
Requested by @nocturnest. I'm so sorry this took so long. I started it thinking it was going to be short and then 7K words flew out. 😬Anyway, thanks for your request. It's been a long time since I wrote anything seriously and this was really good for me. Hope you enjoy!
“Laser cutter. Three auto-rifles. Two handguns. Three boxes of ammo each.”
Check.
The binoculars are heavy duty, and the metal texture grates your fingers as you pull them up to peer through the lenses into the next building over. A high-rise that had at least 30 floors. All windowed at least, which made this a little easier on you.
“In through the fifth-floor service area. Through the employee hallway to the service elevator.”
A map of the building laid next to you on the gravel roof. It hadn’t been easy to get your hands on it, but it was worth it for a building as secure as this. No security measure had been overlooked by this man and as paranoid as he seemed it went a long way to his credibility.
“In and out through the service elevator. 20 mins tops. Oh, the jammer.”
A handheld device that you’d paid top dollar for. Yes, it has duct tape holding pieces of it together, and the screen was a repurposed old Gameboy front, but it is the best your back-channel dealer could provide.
How did anyone do anything without a handler these days?
The jammer would save you the trouble (if things turned sideways) of dealing with reinforcements. It flickers to life by flipping a switch smoldered to its side. The thing really does look like a piece of garbage.
Several frequencies and networks flashed across the screen, all of them belonging to the building you were surveying. Scrolling through, only a few needed to be shut down, too many and it would raise alarms.
Wifi was the last to be turned off and then you would really need to book it inside.
Everything planned out to a T. Entrance and exits mapped. Back-up plans (and back-up plans to those back-up plans) in place. Extra weapons and ammo in case you had to go out guns blazing. This should be no problem.
“Office-penthouse on the top floor. Computer terminal on the desk, west side.”
Get to the computer, get the files, destroy everything. If you happened to kill the son of a bitch, well, that was a bonus.
You sigh and rub your face, trying to work out the stress lines that seemed to make a permanent home between your brows. “Now I just need to stop talking to myself.”
It was an unfortunate habit you’d picked up in the last few months of working alone. Usually, you had… no. This was no time to think of them, or of him. You have to focus. After this is done, you can go back and apologize, even grovel if you have to.
But now is the time for focus.
In the middle of repeating this mantra, one you’ve been repeating for the last month, you happen to look up at the street. Not for any real reason, nothing had drawn your attention. Nothing was amiss in your perfect plan.
Except two very familiar faces walking down the sidewalk.
Lemon and Tangerine.
Clad in their typical attire. Snazzy suits, dress shoes, and ties.
Your stomach does several things. First it flips at the sight of Tangerine as he saunters with his hands in his pockets, then it sinks and twists into painful knots.
“No, no, no!”
They can’t be here! Anywhere but here!
The two walked casually down the sidewalk, as if they were taking a nice midday stroll. No rifles, no car, nothing. Either they were ballsy as hell…or wildly misinformed about this building and the man inside.
Something in you hoped, prayed, they would pass the building. That they were going somewhere else.
They took a sharp turn to cross the street—toward the building entrance—and your breath turned ragged, your blood chilled. At the same time, your mind was churning with practicality, cold and calculated ideas. Some nasty part of you that had gotten you this far in such a dangerous career, that had nestled in you a long time ago and only now resurfaced in the months of being alone.
You could just walk away; they have their job, and they’re professionals. They can handle themselves.
You could go in after and clean up without ever being seen. Easy. The plan you made could still work, Tangerine and Lemon would be a perfect distraction.
But you were already moving. Lega working on their own and putting you into motion. Fingers tapping off the Wi-Fi signal on the jammer while you slung your duffle bag over your shoulder.
This was not the plan, you argued with yourself as you flew down the back stairs. You’ll get yourself killed being this reckless and impulsive. What happened to in and out in 20 mins?
With every point you made the other side of your mind made a counterpoint.
They’re underprepared. They’re misinformed. They don’t have the firepower to walk in the front door, hell, they don’t have enough bullets to make it to the second floor.
“God damn it!” You yelled, taking the stairs down two at a time. Your voice echoed off the walls in the cramped stairwell. The rifles in your duffle bag clattered and banged together.
They’d be killed. Tangerine and Lemon would be killed. You couldn’t let that happen.
. . .
“I say we take a hostage and negotiate our way up.”
“Yeah, sure, Lemon.”
“This guy’s what, a tech billionaire, or something?”
“Probably.”
“Ok, so he’s a nerd. Easy job.”
“Uh-huh.”
Lemon shoots his brother a less than happy look. Tangerine is staring off into space with a slight frown, hands shoved deep in his pockets as he hunches over a little. Which wasn’t new, he’d been doing that a lot lately. A reflection of his dour mood.
Lemon rolls his eyes. “Oh, mate. Come on. We’re on a job.”
Tangerine shrugs, frowning harder. “I’m fuckin’ aware of that, Lemon.”
“Then stop with your sulking! What have I told you?”
“No—” Tangerine waves a hand, “—you don’t need to say it again—”
“Just send her a letter or something. She’d love it.”
Tangerine groans, he’s starting to get a headache now as they near the target building. “As I’ve said before, I attached letters on the flowers I sent.”
Lemon opens his mouth, but Tangerine cuts him off. “And I sent more than one bouquet. For fuck’s sake, her house probably looks like a tropical rainforest by now.”
“What about—”
“I’ve sent her presents. Jewelry. Perfume. A new phone in case hers was broken. Fuckin’ hell I even had her porch repainted.”
“And she didn’t say anything?”
“Nothing.”
Lemon hesitates. “Did you say you’re sorry?”
Now Tangerine was about to lose it. His eye twitched, not that his brother could see it. “Sorry for what? She’s the one that up and disappeared without a word.”
“I still think you should say it. Just to cover your bases.”
“I’m not apologizing. We were all perfect and you know that. She was happy as a clam and if something was wrong, she would have told me.”
“Then why’d she—”
“You’re really getting on my fucking nerves, Lemon.”
They were across the street from the main entrance now. Two glass doors with golden handles reflected the brothers. In sync they both took a sharp turn toward them. Through the glass they didn’t see anyone else in the lobby and there was a long, chest high counter with a clerk along the far back wall.
Neither of them blinked at how empty the lobby was. Their client had said this target was some kind of informant, but that was about it. They’d paid half up front and sent them on their merry way.
Tangerine yanked open the glass door, holding it for Lemon. He was beyond pissed and just wanted this to be over with. Despite his complaints he was still mulling over what his brother said. Should he apologize, even though he had done nothing wrong? He didn’t think he’d done anything wrong, and he had thought back on all the times you’d been with them, working a job or not.
He’d been happy, he thought you were happy too.
The white floor tiles of the lobby were so shiny they could check their reflections in them. The whole place was upstanding and flaunted wealth. On both sides of the spacious lobby were two silver elevators. The clerk, a lady in her mid-thirties, looked up at them as they walked in. She picked up a phone and turned away as she spoke.
It took them 10 seconds to reach the desk, and, in that time, Lemon had pulled out his gun.
He pointed it at her now. “Hang up the phone.”
She pursed her lips and narrowed her eyes. Not the usual response someone has when a gun is pointed at them, but she slowly hangs up.
“Come out from behind the desk, slowly.”
There’s a moment when she does nothing. Then, “No.”
Tangerine blinks, then pulls out his own gun. “Did you really just say no? Listen lady—”
She leans forward over the desk, leering. “Turn around and get the fuck out.”
Lemon shoots into the wall slightly to her left. She doesn’t even flinch at the sound. “I will fucking shoot you. Get out. From behind. The desk.”
She leans back. “Cute gun.”
Tangerine starts to get a sinking feeling. He turns to Lemon, about to say they should take a walk (maybe find a back entrance to this place instead) when the woman pulls out .22 Uzi from somewhere in the desk. They only catch a glimpse of the muzzle before they start shooting wildly and ducking.
Lemon takes a shot to the chest with a grunt. Tangerine hears the bullets whizzing past him and shattering glass.
The desk clerk turns disappearing behind an employee door seamlessly built into the wall.
They crouch down next to the desk. Tangerine’s head pounds, as it usually does when a job gets out of control.
“You alright?” He reloads his gun, watching his brother carefully.
Lemon checks himself over, patting his chest and stomach. “Yeah, all good, the vest caught it. This is fucked what do we do—”
He doesn’t get a chance to finish as both elevators open and squads of heavily armored men pour out. They all have automatic rifles and black Kevlar vests.
“Behind the desk!” Tangerine shouts, pulling Lemon up.
They jump over just as the bullets start flying. Glass shatters, wood splinters, tiles crack. It’s utter chaos and Tangerine and Lemon can only sit behind cover.
“I think we might be fucked!” Lemon shouts, checking his gun.
Tangerine grits his teeth, mind racing. “The client didn’t mention this level of security! I’m going to wring their fucking neck!”
“We’re outmatched!”
“No question, Lemon! Thanks for pointing that out!” Tangerine can feel his brother’s rising anxiety as he shifts his weight from foot to foot.
“What do we do?!”
“We hope to God this is all of them and try our best to make it out of here!”
“You’re saying—”
Tangerine fires blindly from behind the desk. “Yes, we bail on this job and break our client’s fucking legs!”
The onslaught never seems to end. These assholes are top security and they’re trained well. Their shots chip away at the desk piece by piece, Tangerine and Lemon can feel the bullets violently embed themselves in the wood against their backs.
Tangerine glances at the employee door, there’s no handle and no way to pry it open. He figures there’s a remote control that opens it somewhere from behind. He tries to remain calm, think of a way out that isn’t behind at least 10 guys with rifles.
What would you do in this situation? His heart feels like it’s been pierced with a lance as he thinks of you. Obviously, you would never be caught in a situation like this. You were careful, practical, methodical in the way you planned out jobs.
He wished you were here with him.
Instinctually, his hand reaches into his pocket, grabbing his phone. Lemon watches him with something close to sympathy on his face.
Your number is on speed dial. Tangerine presses a button and holds it up to his ear.
It goes straight to voicemail.
The automated answering machine has become very familiar to him these last few months. Were you checking his voicemails? He’d left you enough to fill up your mailbox, he was sure of it.
“Please leave a message after the tone.”
He hopes you can hear him over the sound of gunshots.
“Yeah, look. Lemon and I, we’re in a bit of a pickle. I was really hoping you would answer this time ‘cause we need help. Since you didn’t, I just wanted to say that you’re a real prick for leaving us the way you did. And you haven’t said a single thank you or anything for all the gifts I’ve sent. Poor Lemon has been wondering where you went off to.” He pauses. This wasn’t the way he wanted to start this message, but every other attempt at getting your attention has failed.
“You know how I feel, I’ve made that pretty clear. But right now, I’m just pissed. Nothing has worked, so I’m going to break into your house and wait for you to come home.”
Lemon gives him a startled look, shakes his head from side to side.
Tangerine frowns. “Don’t take that the wrong—Alright, I won’t break into your house, but I will wait on your doorstep. Every day, I’ll be there until I see you.”
Lemon is still frowning, but Tangerine ignores him.
“This is all because…Well, I…” He struggles, throat turning dry and closing around the words he wants to say. Instead of continuing, he hangs up.
Sitting back against the desk he exhales. The gunfire has stopped to an occasional patter here and there.
Lemon runs a hand through his hair. “Bruv, what the fuck was that?”
“A last-ditch effort at getting some backup.”
They fell into silence; the lobby was eerily quiet. They knew the security team was just waiting for them to come out from behind the desk. The air crackled with energy.
Lemon checked his pockets. “I’ve got two clips left, you?”
“One and a half.”
The look they share conveys their doubts, their dread. An unspoken conversation passes between them.
Tangerine puts it in the back of his mind. “I’ll run out first, then you go a few seconds later.”
“No way, we go at the same time.”
He shakes his head but arguing only puts off the inevitable.
“Go to the opposite side of the desk.”
They split, crouching behind opposite corners. There was no way either of them would be able to make it two steps without taking 10 rounds to the chest. The image of you stays in Tangerine’s mind. He just wished he could see you again. Whatever comes next, afterlife or not, he hoped you—or some form of you—would be in it.
Tangerine gives Lemon one last look, finds that his brother is watching him, and gives him a somber nod. He holds his gun up, takes a deep breath, gets ready to run…
He’s out from behind the desk, gritting his teeth and firing in a flash.
He hits one, another to his left falls from Lemon’s bullets. His legs are shaky, he can feel them trembling.
Rifles take aim.
Tangerine opens his mouth to urge Lemon on.
And a grenade goes off.
The loud bang startles him, his ears ring and a second later he’s shrouded in white, smokey fog. Tangerine stops, confused, looking around to try and find Lemon. But a strong hand yanks him and drags him back. He stumbles, scattering empty bullet shells along the ground, and falls onto the tile.
He’s back behind the desk. Lemon falls next to him.
A pair of legs stands between the brothers. Next to them lies a green duffle bag. Empty rifle shells fall to the ground. Tangerine didn’t even realize guns were firing. He followed the legs up in one long sweep of his eyes.
. . .
A million and one things were going through your mind as you fired an automatic rifle at the security team in the lobby. The biggest thing was holding back every fiber of your damn being from screaming at Tangerine and Lemon for being so foolish.
If you had been a breath later, a second too late, these idiots would be laying in a pile of their own blood on the floor. That thought definitely won’t haunt you for a few months.
The other thing you were concentrating on was ignoring the way Tangerine was staring at you right now. He’s not hurt—you kept repeating, over and over again. He’s ok.
The security team was scattering for cover, but finding little, making your job easy as the last of the smoke cleared. They hadn’t been expecting someone to come in from behind and you’d shot a few in the back before throwing the smoke grenade. Only a few were left now.
They seemed to get over their surprise and began firing back, opening the elevators, and using the inside cabins for cover. Keeping the doors open would stop them from being sent back up for more goons to come through. That was good.
You duck down behind the desk. They were still staring at you.
“Yes! Hello!” You stubbornly gritted out while staring into the wood.
Tangerine’s mouth opened and closed many times, but no words came out. That didn’t mean Lemon wasn’t able to say anything.
“Did you get his message?” He was grinning like some kind of fool.
“Message? Which one?”
Was he talking about the hundreds of messages—texts, voicemails, and letters—Tangerine had been sending on a weekly basis? Yes, you’d gotten them. Read every single one. It had been hard enough sleeping normally, after all that you hadn’t been able to sleep at all. The guilt was overwhelming.
Lemon’s eyes dart to his brother. You did the same and regretted it immediately.
Tangerine’s eyes were practically bulging from his head. His mustache twitched.
Oh, he’s pissed.
You quickly look away and clear your throat. “Are you on a job?”
“Yeah, a shit one. We were just trying to bail.”
“Can’t blame you. What happened, bad intel?”
Tangerine’s voice resembled a growl, it grated against your ear, but it wasn’t entirely unwelcome. “Understatement of the century, love.”
Love. Love. Love.
Lemon wipes his forehead. “What’re you doing here?”
“I have my own problems with your target.” You turn to Lemon but feel Tangerine’s eyes burning a hole in your back. “I was about to sneak in when I saw you two walking down the street.” You check your gun, then rummage through the duffle bag for another clip.
“A massive coincidence then?” Lemon was holding back a smile, eyes darting to Tangerine occasionally. It was as if they weren’t just about to die only five minutes ago.
“If you two still want to bail, that’s fine with me. I’ll give you a window after taking the rest out. I’m going to push on.”
Tangerine spins you around by the shoulder to face him. “Are you fucking mental?”
You’re very close together. The determination it takes not to just lean in and…
Speaking slow, you’re focusing your words and hoping it gets through to him. “Your target has info on me that could get people hurt and ruin my reputation. I need to wipe his computer.”
For all his credit, Tangerine takes you seriously in that moment, even as he looks like he might commit murder. He looks to Lemon—they do that ‘sibling conversation’ without words that they’re so good at.
“We’ll stick around to help.”
“You sure?”
Something in him ignites. There’s a fire behind his eyes. “Fuck yes, we’re sure.”
He’s giving mixed signals now. Is he angry? Probably. But apparently not angry enough to leave you on a job alone.
“Alright…” You say, slowly backing away.
You search through the duffle bag, cold objects graze your fingers, you can identify them each by touch. The laser cutter has a rubber handle. “Lemon—" You toss it to him. “—Cut a hole in the employee door. Tangerine—” You grab another rifle, placing it into his hands. “—Help me take out the last of the guys.”
He takes the rifle and for a moment your hands touch. You expect him to flinch away, or recoil, but he lingers there for a moment. His golden rings gleam—of course he wore them, he never leaves them behind—and catch your eyes until he takes the gun from you.
Fucking confusing.
It had been months, but the three of you worked together like no time had passed at all. Tangerine falling in sync with you, watching your back. Working in tandem, the few remaining riflemen dropped like flies.
“Doors open!” Lemon shouted tapping you and Tangerine’s shoulder.
The three of you waste no time dashing into the small service hallway. Tangerine grabbed the duffle bag and slung it over his shoulder. You were just about to pick it up, but he gave you a look.
There wasn’t as much polish to this part of the building, the lighting was dimmer, and it lacked the white tiles, replaced by a steely gray metal flooring instead. The hallway was long and narrow, its walls matched the floor in color.
“This should lead to an employee elevator. That will take us to the top office.” You panted, oddly exhilarated.
Lemon was looking down the hallway as he crouched. “Watch out for the desk clerk, she went this way.”
“Still can’t believe you both just walked in the front door…”
“We don’t all have your sense of planning, darling.” Tangerine huffed, hiking the bag higher on his shoulder.
“Did you have any sense of planning?”
“Lemon had a plan.”
You turn halfway back to face him. “You—Tangerine!”
He fixes you with an odd look. “What?”
“Lemon doesn’t even read the briefs! And you let him make the plan?” You shoot an apologetic look to Lemon. “No offense, you’re really great in every other area.”
He gives you a half smile. “I appreciate that.”
Tangerine grinds his teeth. “In my defense, the intel in the brief was already bad.” He steps closer, into your personal space. “And you always come up with the plans.”
You don’t shy away from him, in fact, you inch closer. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to make them, but you should know better—”
Lemon sighs, long and loud. “Can you two please focus? We’re in the middle of a dangerous situation here.”
It took a moment for you and Tangerine to resume, the closeness was intimate. Electricity crackles in the air between you.
You both say ‘Fine’ at the same time, like stubborn teenagers. The tension hadn’t settled one bit.
If Tangerine needed to be ignored for the remainder of this mission, then ok. That’s fine. No problem. That doesn’t bother you one bit. Nope.
The three of you empty the duffle bag of its contents, splitting the ammo and giving Lemon the pump action shotgun. That shotgun was your Hail Mary in case shit hit the fan—which, by your definition, it had.
You three were your own personal attack squad now, armed to the teeth.
The employee lift was at the end of the twisting hallway, metallic doors shining like a beacon. The panel to call it only had the arrow pointing up, a one-way lift. You’d poured over the maps late into the night leading up to your personal mission, often with a glass of wine, and it had struck you as odd that it only offered a one way up.
You jab at the button, and the little golden light is stark against the greys around it. Tangerine stands just behind you; you can hear his breath over your shoulder.
“Why’s it only one way?” he asks, hushed and tense.
“I asked the same question.” You responded turning a little to look at him. “I thought it might be security measures.”
“Doesn’t really make sense though, does it? It lets people like us up.” Tangerine zeroes in on your frown. “What is it?”
“There might be internal controls from the top office. This guy doesn’t fuck around with security.”
“Who is this guy anyway?” Lemon sniffs, casting a look back down the hallway.
“An asshole that likes snooping into people’s personal business.”
The brothers trade looks.
“He also works in satellite tech, undercover ops, information gathering.”
There’s a gentle bump into your shoulder. “He’s been snooping into your business, has he?”
How long is this elevator going to take?
“He has.”
“Did he try to blackmail you?”
“Yes.”
“What did he find?”
The elevator dings and the sleek metal doors slide open. The inside is full of ominous red and gold hues. The luxuriousness of it gives you the impression that the boss of the building takes it regularly.
Instead of answering, you step inside and forcefully hit the button for the top floor. Tangerine watches you carefully, studying you. Somehow, he looks like a kicked puppy, yet holding the rifle he takes on a much more sinister tone. He still looks dashing as hell in his suit though. You can see the little gold chain of his necklace around his broad neck.
Focus, focus, focus!
His mustache twitches a bit as he catches you staring. And to top that off, he stands in front of you, very closely in front. Either trying to shield you or irritate you. Possibly both.
He’s wearing the cologne you got him as a present almost a year ago.
“If there’s in house security for this lift, we should be prepared.” You shift a little to see Lemon over Tangerine’s shoulder.
“What do you suggest?”
“They know we’re coming, so we have to be fast. Their access to elevators has been blocked. All remaining security teams will need to take the stairs. This elevator opens to another employee hallway that we’ll have to exit in order to reach the office. That’s assuming—”
The elevator stutters, something above you screeches in the elevator shaft, and the panel lights flicker. All three of you stumble as it comes to an abrupt stop and the dim emergency lights switch on. They coat the interior in a faint red light, turning it into a nightmare scenario.
You groan. “That’s assuming they don’t just turn the elevator off. Fuck.”
Lemon places the shotgun on the floor and motions to Tangerine. Together they pry the paneling off to reveal the switchboard underneath. Lemon fusses with the wiring, using a knife to cut through some and connect it to others.
Sparks fly, flashing in the dim light. Your anxiety ramps. Trapped in an elevator was not on your list of things you wanted to deal with today.
While Lemon fussed with wires, Tangerine turned back to you. “Relax.”
“Excuse me?”
“Try to stay calm, we’ll be out in a second or two.”
Your blood boiled hot. “Don’t tell me to be calm.”
Tangerine smiles at you. “I know you hate elevators.”
“They’re fine, I just particularly hate being trapped in them.”
“Just relax, I’ve got you.”
“That doesn’t help at all!”
More sparks and flickering lights and the elevator doors open an inch. Tangerine has the audacity to smirk in that moment and he touches your chin briefly. His eyes gleam in the dim light.
If you all lived, you were going to kill him.
The twins work wordlessly to pry the elevator doors open. It takes a tremendous effort and both of them are sweaty and breathing hard at the end, but there’s enough space for a person to climb through. Except, you’re going to have to jump down into the office below. Half the elevator is blocked.
“Well, good news is…” Lemon says, scratching his head, “we can get out. And if the elevator can only fall downward.”
“The elevator only goes up, Lemon.” You choke out.
“Oh. Right…well, best get a move on then.”
“I’ll go first.” Tangerine volunteers.
On instinct you reach for him. He sees the slight movement before you hold yourself back.
As if it was easy, he’s crouching down, squeezing through the doors, and jumping into the office below. All with his gun in his hand. Meanwhile, your heart is doing summersaults in your throat.
He holds his hands up, beckoning you. “Come on. You’ve done harder things than this.”
You force yourself to move, crouching down and inching toward the opening. You toss him your rifle. “Like when?”
“Like when you jumped between rooftops in Venezuela.”
“I wasn’t thinking when I did that! And in hindsight, it was fucking stupid of me.”
He laughs. “I’ve got you. Come on.”
You squeeze through the doors, imagining the elevator crashing down, the doors snapping shut, something—anything drastic, and then throw yourself at Tangerine. He catches you with practiced ease and holds you close to him.
He says something you don’t catch over the sound of your trembling breaths. There’s a pat on your shoulder, Lemon is out.
Regaining yourself, you move away from Tangerine and straighten your clothes. His brow furrows, mustache tilts down. Maybe it was your imagination, but did his fingers grip your clothes? A silent plea for you to stay?
You do your best to ignore it. “Let’s go. Did anyone catch what floor we stopped on?”
“37th.” Lemon says, handing over your gun.
Two floors short.”
“You think they’re waiting for us?”
“I’d bet money on it. Be careful, both of you. I don’t want to see any heroics.”
Tangerine’s eyes follow you as you move to the front and lead them through the hallway at a jogging pace. The single door at the end is much like the one you entered on the first-floor lobby. There’s a control panel for it to the side. As you run up to it, you press your ear to the other side.
No noise.
Your hand hovers over the button. With one last look behind you at the twins you give them a nod, then press it. The door clicks open a fraction, and everything goes to shit.
They were waiting for you on the other side of the door and the gunfire started up immediately. Your vision was blocked immediately, and you were pushed and tugged out by a strong hand—the world was a blur of loud shots, ringing ears, and scrambling. Grey cubicles shoulder-height tall were set up along the floor, which made spotting the enemy incredibly hard. All the fighting was done in the tight walkways between the office spaces.
Your shirt had blood on it, but you had no bullet wounds. Tangerine sat beside you, holding an arm. He’d been shot in his right arm.
“I said no heroics!” You practically shrieked.
Lemon was firing between cubicles, and from the sound of it, he was holding his own.
“What was I supposed to do, love?” Tangerine pants through the pain.
“You’re supposed to let me handle it!” You’re shouting as you pull out some gauze. The bullet went straight through his upper arm. He’d need stitches but, overall, he would be ok. You poke and prod gently as he hisses with each touch.
His teeth are gritted as he grunts out, “You wanted to get shot?”
“I’d take a bullet for you, happily. You know that.”
“I feel the same way, which is what I was doing.”
“I still don’t want you to!”
“I don’t want you to, either!”
Something bounces off your back. It’s a stapler. Both you and Tangerine stare at it for a moment, confused.
“Oi! You two! Get over yourselves and actually talk about your feelings for once!”
You whip around to stare daggers at Lemon. “Did you just throw a stapler at me?!”
He’s taking cover behind a grey cubicle not too far away. “Yeah, I did! I’m sick of you two avoiding an actual conversation. Talk—it—out!”
Tangerine sits up, pushing against your hands on his chest in your weak attempt to keep him down. “You’ve lost your mind, mate!”
“Thomas would say to express your feelings, that bottling them up is bad for you! So, express them!”
“Is it really necessary—” You pick up your rifle and fire blindly down the walkway, “—to do this now? We’re a little busy!”
“It’s now or never, I know you two! Once all this stops, you’ll avoid it!”
Tangerine looks perplexed, like he’s really considering it, and you try not to look at him again. “Fuck this job!” You shout, before rolling into the walkway and opening fire.
The two or three men that hadn’t been behind cover are caught by surprise and the bullets chew through the walls of the cubicles. A deadly silence permeates the office floor, only the ringing in your ears remains.
Another shot rings out and you feel like your shoulder’s been ripped from the socket.
You’re thrown back onto the ground. It must have been a heavy round, your left arm is completely numb, do you even have an arm left?
There’s shouting and more gunshots, the grey office walls and floor merge into one as the room spins. You’re getting pulled off the ground, someone is prodding your arm. Absentmindedly, you swat at whoever is doing it.
“Listen, hey, open your eyes!”
Tangerine…
You obey. He’s inches in front of your face, brows furrowed, a vein in his forehead sticks out.
“I’m fine.” You cough out. “Just fell down, is all.”
“You’ve been shot!”
“Oh.”
He struggles, he looks like he has more to say, but stays silent. You swat at Lemon who’s wrapping your arm—or shoulder, more accurately. “I’m fine, let’s keep going.”
“You’re not fine.” Lemon grunts, pushing your hand away. “It was a .308 round. You’ll be lucky if you have any bones left in your shoulder.”
“Why’d you do that?!” Tangerine is shouting, running his hand through his hair. You both match now, he’s bandaged up on his left arm too.
“Do what?” You ask through gritted teeth as Lemon tightens the bandage.
“Run out like an absolute lunatic?”
“I told you I’d take a bullet for you.”
His eyes bug out. “You threw yourself into the line of fire!”
“All in a day’s work. Now, can we get back to it?” You don’t wait for a response, instead pushing yourself to your feet. Your left arm hangs to the side, limp and numb. A dull throb pulses through your side.
Tangerine watches you. “We need to have a serious discussion when this is over, love.”
You huff out a breath, swaying slightly. “Noted.”
The three of you push on in tense silence. Tangerine makes sure you’re behind him while the rest of the floors leading to the main penthouse office are cleared. He’s acting so stubborn, blocking you at every turn, holding you back with a gentle, yet unyielding hand. The vein in his forehead never goes away.
Finally, the double doors leading to the office are before you. Platinum gold, of course, with carved handles. This guy’s style was beginning to get obnoxious.
Lemon kicks open the doors with as much anger and prejudice as you feel (yet can’t muster at the moment). Instead of what you were expecting, the target stands alone behind his desk. He smirks, giving off a Wall Street investor impression with his pressed suit and perfectly cut hair.
He spreads his arms wide. “I really should have known you three would be together for this.”
“Shut up, wanker.” Tangerine shouts, pointing his gun.
The target opens his mouth to say more, but Tangerine doesn’t let him. He empties the clip into the man’s chest.
The target dies with a startled look on his face, falling back over his desk.
You move past Tangerine, fighting his hands that grip at your clothing. “Thank God for that.”
The computer is easily hacked, the files you’re after are on the desktop. Maybe the dead man was looking to bargain—or gloat. You glance at his dead, glazed over eyes.
Bastard.
Tangerine paces, looking at you often. His job is done, the confirmation is sent to the client through Lemon’s phone.
Your files are downloaded onto an encrypted flash drive, and you rip the wiring out of the computer’s back, smashing the server tower. Mission accomplished.
“I guess now that you have what you need, you’ll disappear again.” Tangerine is glaring at you, chewing his lip. His bandage is bloody.
The flood gates open.
“I needed these files!” You shout, worsening the headache you already have.
Tangerine shouts back, taking a step closer. “I would have understood if you had just told me!”
“I couldn’t have told you!”
“Why not?”
“Because—well—I didn’t—It doesn’t matter now!”
“So, you disappear for months, without a word, for something you won’t even tell me about?!”
“I didn’t want to involve you! I wanted to get this done myself!”
“I’m involved now!”
“It was a shitty coincidence you showed up here today, and I’m sorry you got hurt because of this job!”
“I’m not concerned about me!”
“Well, you should be! I care about your safety!”
“And I care about yours!”
In the corner, Lemon shakes his head.
You hold your arm, trying to work some feeling back into it. It throbs and you wish you hadn’t. “I would have come back after this was done.”
“Oh, really?” Tangerine laughs dryly. “How was I to know?”
You groan, throat turning dry. “You’re so impatient! I just needed a little time!”
“You know how often I tried to reach you—?”
“Yes! I heard every message, got every bouquet of flowers—and thank you for my porch, that was really nice.”
Tangerine flounders a little, he still wants to argue, but some of the steam has been let out. “A thank you would have been nice.”
“I’m thanking you now!”
“A whole good that did when I thought you were done with me—” He shoots a look at his brother, “—and Lemon!”
“I’ll say I’m sorry a thousand more times, Tangerine! Is that what you want?”
He turns his back to you, grumbling something.
“I don’t understand why it was such a big deal to you, we’re contractors! We kill people for a living, and you’re freaking out—”
He spins back around. “It’s a big deal because I thought you were hurt.” He stalks closer, you notice his hair has come undone from the neat gel, curls flair out around his neck. “I thought something happened to you!” He’s within arm’s distance now. “It’s a big deal because I love you!”
And then he stops. His eyes go wide, as if he’s just spilled a secret.
Fuck, he did just spill a secret. Maybe you had known, but he’s never said anything. It was always just little guesses here and there, a thought—a feeling—and inclination. Late nights, especially recently, that you spent thinking about it, wondering.
Your mouth falls open in the silence. “I—I…love…” but damned if your mouth just wasn’t getting it out.
Arguing and bickering was so much easier.
But he knows, he can see it in the way your eyes soften, in the way you swallow with a dry throat. In the way your hand reaches to him, and your body leans forward.
“You know…” Lemon says, looking up from his phone, “Most people would kiss at this point. Just a suggestion.”
A quip, a very fitting one, comes to mind and you’re about to tell Lemon just how you’re not normal people, when Tangerine pulls you to him. Your chest presses to his and his lips are on yours in an instant.
Hungry, needy. It’s desperate, an urgent need be close, to be touching. Burning with desire and hot with passion. You give into it.
His mustache scratches at your lips and you pull him into you, threading your fingers through his curly hair, mussing it up even more. His hands grip at your back, pull at your clothes.
Closer. You need to be closer.
Fuck air, the feeling of his lips moving against yours is the only thing you’ll ever need again.
Your arm throbs and the dull pulse shoots up to your chest. You sigh, half in pain and half in pleasure. Unfortunately, Tangerine pulls back. There’s blood on his lips and he looks concerned.
“Wait…” You mumble, trying to pull him back to you. He’s your lifeline now.
“You need a doctor, love.”
“Just a little longer.”
Tangerine chuckles, wrapping an arm around your back. “After you’re patched up. I promise.”
…Bonus…
“You’re going to ‘break into my house and wait for me to come home’?”
Tangerine groans, throwing his head back as you walk into the small office. Private clinics with ‘respectable’ doctors. Gotta love ‘em.
“Love, I didn’t mean it, I was in a life-or-death situation—I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking—”
You give a good-natured laugh, sitting next to him. You’d been patched up first, Tangerine was just waiting for some blood work to come back.
Tangling your fingers in his you give his hand a gentle squeeze. “I’m just teasing, Tan. I know.”
“Ok.” He sighs, giving your hand a squeeze back. “Good.”
You ruffle through your pockets to pull out your phone, your arm stings, but the pain medication the doc gave you does wonders. “I thought about it, I think you deserve to know why I was after your target.”
He looks at you with new interest now.
You tilt your screen to show him.
It had pictures of you and Tangerine. Pictures of you sitting together at lunch, laughing. Pictures of you walking down the street together, arm in arm. Pictures of you looking like a couple.
“Oh,” he breathes out, “I see.”
“I was worried you’d be put in danger if these…well, if they got into the wrong hands.”
“Didn’t want our clients to think we were softies either, huh?”
“That too.”
He presses his face into your hair. He hasn’t expressed his feelings for you again, but you’re starting to realize he always had—just through actions instead. A gentle hand on the small of your back. Wrapping an arm around your waist. Leaning down to speak softly into your ear.
These were just as much of an expression as words.
“Will we have to do this every time?” he asks, voice muffled slightly.
“Every time what?”
“It’s only a matter of time before more pictures of us make it into someone’s hands.”
“Oh. That’s a good point.”
He pulls you a little closer. “I’ll be dammed if I have to stop taking you out over that.”
“Then I guess we’ll just have to kill whoever tries something like that again.”
“We’ll do it together next time, yeah?”
“Absolutely.”

Giving in to you

Summary- you can’t tell stiles how you feel. He’s your best friends brother, surely he wouldn’t even look at you twice. But on the anual camping trip you realised that he’s struggling to not give in to you just as much as you are him.
———————————————————————
The anual camping trip. It was that time once again where me, my family and a few family friends all packed up the cars to the brim just to camp out in a cold, boring woods. Needless to add the fact there was no wifi or electricity, even working toilets didn’t accompany us on the trip. I knew it was going to be a weekend of my mum trying and failing to catch fish, stiles and Scott ditching me, made up camp fire stories and uncomfortable sleeping.
Still, i couldn’t get out of it. So here I stood with my hands on my hips biting my lip trying to figure out if my orange, wonky tent was supposed to be wonky or if it would fall down and suffocate me in my sleep. I guess that would be a way out of the trip.
“Y/n- that doesn’t look right” my brother observed as he walked over holding his backpack with one strap on his shoulder. “Yeah.. I was just thinking that” “you didn’t pull the strings tight enough” stiles chuckled joining us, he began pulling the strings out the ground. “Pass me the hammer” he pointed to my hand with a smile. He was so cute.
Shut up y/n, that’s your brothers best friend don’t be selfish he wou- “hellloo? Earth to y/n” stiles called out pulling me from my day dream. “Shit- here” I passed him the hammer and using his strong muscular arms pushed it into the ground making my tent look somewhat normal. “Thanks” I smiled when he stood back up. “Well i don’t want it falling on us when we’re asleep” he laughed giving me the hammer back. When his hand touched mine I felt electric sparks fly off.
“Us?” “Yeah, my tent was wrecked so Scott said i could just crash with you guys” stiles explained looking down at it. “Not a- problem Right?” “N- no no not at all” I practically shouted feeling nervous, stiles looked at me with one eye closed. It felt like it was just us here, even though everyone was clanging around us. “A-are we okay? I dunno it’s just felt like you’ve been a bit off with me recently” stiles asked turning to look at me once more.
Yeah because I realised I liked you more than I’m supposed to, more than I’m allowed to. “Yeah we’re fine of course we’re fine” “good- good, your the last person I wanna fall out with you y/n” stiles told me lowering his voice as if we were talking about some secret drug deal that was about to go on. You’d think Scott would be the last person he wanted to fall out with, right?
I couldn’t tell if he was flirting EVER. He was quite hard to read. It was stuff like this that he said to me that made me fall for him. I wonder what he was thinking. “No we’re- fine, Im just- I don’t really like these trips so I’m a bit off I guess” “why don’t you like them?” He wondered with a little laugh. “Because- I’m in the middle of the wood with no phone and I stick to my mums side like we’re magnets because there’s nothing else to do”
“What? There’s loads to do why don’t you ever come with me and Scott to explore and mess about?” Stiles jerked his head back in shock, my lips pressed together looking at stiles. “I didn’t get an invite” “yes you did, I always tell Scott to ask if you want to join us- always”. I took a second to swallow that information. Fucking Scott. I didn’t want to bate out my brother but that had really pissed me off. “Maybe I wanted an invite from you” I shrugged softly smirking still holding eye contact with the boy.
“Did you now?”. I hummed in response keeping my thoughts a mystery, stiles let out a breathy laugh breaking our eye contact for a second. His cheeks turned slightly pink almost as if he was nervous. “Well you’ve got an invite, trust me i wouldn’t turn down spending any time with you”. I watched his eyes carefully, so when I saw them flick to my lips I knew for a fact he was thinking what I was thinking. We gave each other a look both knowing exactly what we were both imagining right now.
“Stiles! Come help me with the air bed” Scott shouted over from the famous jeep breaking the tension between us. Stiles looked across at Scott and then back to me “you coming?” “No I’ll leave that to you men” my hands shot up in defence and a laugh tumbled out of my pink lips. “The quicker it’s done the quicker we can get away from camp” he wiggled his eye brows at me before his arms stretched out and pressed down on my shoulders.
Stiles turned me around and walked me over to Scott as I giggled and tried to escape his grasp. Us three on our own carried the bed into the tent and managed to blow it up to an adequate level of comfortableness. After that was done we filled the tent with everything it needed, that being the flasks, the cool box, blankets and pillows and our bags with some change of clothes and activities to keep us occupied. It was much more fun doing it with stiles and Scott instead of just my brother this time.
“It looks perfect, shall we set off?” Stiles looked to Scott who had gotten comfy in one of the chairs. He had a flask of tea and a pink flowery blanket sprawled across his lap. But that didn’t matter, he was the alpha he could do as he wished with no questions asked. “Yeah sure, let’s go that way” he pointed behind our tent “mum, we’re going off to have a look about” Scott called out grabbing his mum’s attention, she stopped her conversation with Noah to wave at scott.
“Alright hun, will you bring some sticks back with you for another fire” she pointed to the pan sitting on the chard sticks. “Yeah will do, here y/n you can finish my tea” Scott said clearing making the assumption that I wasn’t coming with them. “She’s coming, just leave your tea there it will still be hot” stiles explained pointing at the ground. Scott’s eyes flicked towards me. “Come on” I told him with a sarcastic smile knowing he didn’t want me there. “Fine” he muttered putting his drink down in the grass and bouncing up, heading into the woods.
Stiles turned his head to give me a soft smile and nodded me along. He waited until I got to his side and then we followed scott into the woods. “I shouldn’t have worn shorts and a crop to these mozzys are killing me” i snarled slapping my leg trying to kill the blood sucker. “Gonna have to disagree, I like your outfit” stiles shrugged lightly looking down at me “this is just stuff I usually wear nothing special” I giggled shaking my head.
“I know, I remember when you wore that top to school because the boys wouldn’t shut the fuck up about it all day long” stiles rolled his eyes. What was going on. “I-m sure they were just- messing around” “i don’t care either way they shouldn’t have been saying it they shouldn’t have even been looking” stiles told me in a much more serious tone making my heart pound against my chest. “Stiles it’s really not that deep” I shook my head making my hair fall into my face. “It is to me” I heard him mutter under his breath.
“Why” “Because i couldn’t stop them- no one, I couldn’t stop their thoughts about you i couldn’t stop them looking at you” he told me stopping in his tracks making me stop too and look directly into his baby brown eyes. Was he jealous? No he couldn’t be it, couldn’t it? “Because your not mine and that felt shit”. I blinked at the boy towering over me as the air pulled it’s self out of my throat and my heart nervously pumped out of my chest.
“Guys! Come check this out!” Scott yelled from up ahead. “We should- go” stiles began walking putting a defensive wall up between us. I watched him walk off for a few moments before I made my own move. I was so confused. We trudged through the sky scraping trees before we got to a clearing and there stood a huge lake with a sort of waterfall coming down from some rocks. “Looks like fishing is on the table” Scott told us as we took in the view. “It’s beautiful” “yeah, beautiful” stiles agreed, but when I looked across at him he wasn’t looking at the view. He was looking at me.
“Let’s go see if there’s any rocks at the bottom of the water, if there isn’t we should be able to jump in” Scott wriggled his eyebrows up and down. He bagan to wade his way in after removing his top. Stiles copied throwing his top onto the the floor and removing his shoes. I had to grit my teeth together so my mouth didn’t hang open or I started drooling. Scott turned around splashing at stiles beginning a water bending fight. “There’s no rocks over here” stiles called out ten seconds before he disappeared under the water.
“And it’s pretty deep too” he yelled when he came up for air. His hands ran through his hair and the moment felt as if it was played In slow mo. “Come on y/n, climb up” stiles shouted as he began pulling himself out the water onto the rock formation. “I don’t really- like hights!” I yelled back across the water. “Don’t be a baby!” Scott cackled as he climbed up behind stiles. I let out an annoyed sigh before taking off my shoes. I went round so I didn’t have to get into the water.
When I reached the top the boys were lying on the grass laughing and panting. “I won! I beat the alpha!” Stiles howled out and he fist pumped the air. “You got out first” Scott laughed shaking his head while standing. He looked down at the water before backing up. “Your just jealous j-e-a…” Stiles chuckled sitting up with his legs dangling down. Scott whizzed past us cutting stiles off, taking a large leap into the air and then plummeting into the water. I gasped covering my mouth but relaxed after I heard a splash and then a very excited scream come from my brother mouth.
“Come On” stiles looked my way laughing a little. “I’m not sure sti” I chewed on my lip looking down. “Do it with me then” he told me pushing up off the floor. “You can close your eyes if you have to” he leant his head to the side playfully “come on I’m not gonna let anything happen to you, you just have to hold on” “fine” I rolled my eyes trying to hide my smile. “Get on” stiles tapped his back, slowly walking over I held onto his shoulders and then jumped onto his back. He caught me tightly holding me against him.
“You okay?” He asked gently turning around to me, my chin was resting on his shoulder so our faces were now inches away from each others. “Y-yeah” I gave him a breathy answer. “Good” he answered looking at the side of the cliff that we were edging towards. “Stiles i don’t….” And with that he leaped far off the cliff. I felt the air rushing past my whole body. I couldn’t breath. And then we hit the cold water. Letting go of stiles I splashed about panicking, but I felt a hand on my wrist pulling me up to the surface.
“You okay?” Stiles laughed attaching a hand to my hip bringing me towards him so I was sturdy until my memory of treading water was triggered. “That was fucking awesome! Let’s go again” I rushed swiping my wet hair out of my face. Stiles left out a laugh throwing his head back, I looked at Scott who was looking at us suspiciously. “You coming?” I quizzed pulling instantly away from stiles and swimming to rock wall. “Yeah” Scott nodded. And that’s what we did for what felt like hours. Messing around in the water.
On the way back we collected some stick for the fire but it was pretty hard as the moon was coming up and our source of light was no more above us. When we got back to camp our food was ready, apparently Noah got tired of waiting for us and went off to get sticks himself, so we now had a surplus of sticks. We told them about the body of water we found and surprise surprise my mum said we can go fishing tomorrow. And as if somebody was reading what I was saying, the camp stories began after dinner.
“Dad you didn’t see a ufo on one of your calls” stiles rolled his eyes laughing. “Were you There stiles? No, so how would you know what I saw?” Noah raised an eyebrow at his son who still didn’t believe him. “We dunno what’s out there” Scott shrugged looking up at the stars. “We’ve seen things that no one else would believe” “yeah but… aliens?” My mother chewed her lip nervously, clearly frightened of that idea. “I think I’m going to go and get comfy, if I don’t come back out Goodnight everyone” I smiled pushing up from the fold up chair.
“Night sweetheart” my mum beamed at me. I unzipped my tent, it was quite big it had two compartments one for sleeping and one for living in. I spent what felt like hours sitting in the corner with a blanket reading my book before I decided to get changed into my pjs for extra comfort. I climbed into some gym shorts and I was just about to put my top on before stiles stepped into the tent. “Shit- shit I’m- sorry” he swallowed nervously turning around quicker than I’d ever seen him move.
“It’s just a bra stiles” I laughed shrugging it off while trying to find the top I wanted. “No I- should have knocked” “we’re in a tent” I told him feeding my head through the hole and my arms after. “Where is everyone?” “Everyone’s in the car listening to some music, most of the adults are drunk” “as per, You can turn around now and stop complaining” i sniggered while zipping up my bag. “Oh that wasn’t me complaining, that was me respecting you- and boundaries” he said when he looked back at me. “Well next time Don’t be so respectful”.
Stiles watched my smirk from the floor as he tried to figure out what I meant by that. “Don’t start something because I will finish it” stiles told me as flick of excitement flashed in his eyes. “I don’t know what you mean by that- I don’t know what you mean half the time” I scoffed looking at him with my y/e/c eyes. “Stop it because I’m trying so hard here…” he sighed looking upwards. “Trying hard to do what” “keep control- but that’s not something I have when I’m around you” he admitted. I was bored of messing around.
I needed to know what he was thinking, what he felt. “Then give in, why are you trying?”. Stiles looked back down at me hungrily, I saw the exact moment he gave up the control. He darted towards me lowering to my level. I knew exactly what was about to happen. Stiles latched his lips onto mine holding my face close as if he didn’t want to let me go. I pulled myself up so my body could be closer to his and an arm went around his neck, my hand pleasantly found his hair. “I’m so fucked” stiles whispered against my lips.
I kissed him harder “Why?” “Because I’ve fully lost control now and I have no intention of trying to get it back” he told me pulling away for a second to look at me. “I don’t want you to get it back, this is what I want stiles” I whispered before pressing our lips together again. The boy pulled the top off that shouldn’t have been put on in the first place and then he lowered me to the ground kissing me again moving his tongue into my mouth.
“Stiles is y/n asleep i w…” scott pulled open the tent door. His eyes locked with mine before stiles’s seeing him over the top of me wearing no top. My face instantly turned red, stiles didn’t exactly get off me either because of my bra being on show.
Scott’s eyes flashed red.

The one
Modern Tommy Shelby x reader
A/N congratulations @toms-cherry-trees on 1.5K followers! 👏🏻✨🎉🥳🙌🏻 you deserve that and many many more!! So I wrote this little piece for you, I hope you enjoy it, the idea came to my mind as the perfect match for your autumn theme when I saw this moodboard @acewritesfics created (I know you did it for Cillian + cottage Ace, but since I have that idea very similar in my The Photoshoot series, I took it as inspiration for a modern Tommy ☺️)
Patting around the bed to find the solid body she loved the most, but all Y/N could find was emptiness.
She couldn’t love this place more, the birds were chirping outside, the fresh air was too good to be true, no cellphone signal… if only she could find Tommy.
“Good morning beautiful.” He praised from the bedroom door, stepping in with a tray full of coffee, fruit and toast.
“I woke up and you weren’t here.” She pouted covering her upper body with the sheets.
“But I am now.” He replied placing the tray over her legs, taking one long look at her disheveled hair, tangled from all the times he ran his fingers through it the previous night. Her naked form covered only by the ivory sheets.
This was the closest to a vacation she could afford right now, not because money was a problem, but because Tommy had been extremely busy with his business and she knew asking for a five day or a week holiday would drive him mad, so a weekend at a small cottage was a luxury she couldn’t miss.
Everything had been perfect since they arrived; the lovely weather, the scent of nature, the calmness vs the caos in the city. She loved specially the dead leaves crunching beneath her feet as they took a long walk the previous day.
“It was a good idea to bring that small coffee machine.” Tommy chuckled realizing how little things they had there, no tv, no wifi, there was a small old fashioned fireplace that luckily still worked and he lit it as it started to get chilly last night.
“Told you it was a good investment.”
“I thought we’d have one… guess I was wrong.”
“Yeah same reason why you brought your iPad too.”
Tommy stole a strawberry from the bowl. “Uhu, I really can’t believe there’s no access to technology around.”
“Don’t complain, we’ve hot water and power light.”
Tommy’s eyes sparkled suddenly. “And the best part is… I‘ve you all to myself.”
Y/N’s body tingled just by his voice and the way he was looking at her.
Closing her legs instinctively, she observed her boyfriend place the tray on the dresser.
“You think that’s going to stop me?” He arched an eyebrow cockily at the same time he took one of her legs to drop a kiss on her ankle, starting a trail of feather-like kisses all over her skin, making Y/N discover the soft spot behind her knee that she didn’t know it existed and how much it was turning her on.
She sighed content letting Tommy throw the covers aside.
****
It was a lovely Autumn day, her favorite season, the colors, the trees losing their leaves, the smell, she could swear the atmosphere was different.
Perhaps what really made a difference was watching Tommy so calm with a high energy and an endless smile on his face. Turning around, she found the last rays of sunshine kissing his skin, every freckle and the reflection in the lake in front of them making his blue eyes sparkle even more.
He wasn’t wearing his signature immaculate three piece suit, but a white t-shirt covered by a denim jacket and black jeans, he looked like a totally different person, looking at him made her heart skip a beat, just like the first time.
“Whot?” He frowned.
“You look different.” Y/N pointed out. “Happier.”
“Well I’ve everything I want right now, that surely is a motive.” Tommy admitted kissing her hair.
His surprise grew even more when he saw Y/N pulling out a blanket from the basket she demanded to bring to their stroll.
“Don’t stand there watching, help me!” She shot him a look, placing her side on the grass.
“So bossy.” Tommy chuckled, relaxing his body finally over the blanket, pulling her towards him moments later.
He tried to suppress a chuckle when he saw her placing a bottle of wine and two glasses between them, she was always extra when packing.
“Oh, do I hear someone complaining?” She laughed.
In silence, his mind wandered to think how grateful he really was for Ada insisting over and over for him to try out one of those ridiculous dating apps, after being extremely picky about the prospects showing up in his cellphone, he stopped when he found Y/N’s profile.
Matching her right away, the conversation was flowing naturally, they simply clicked and agreed to meet the following week.
She wasn’t just eye catching physically, her interests caught his attention, she was a lawyer and worked at her own firm, had a good taste in music and books, she loved to fight for human rights. And when they first met in person, he knew she wasn’t just good looking, she had a brain, an interesting conversation and she could keep up with his wicked sense of humor surprisingly well. He was surprised how the conversation never seemed to die with Y/N.
The romance took off immediately, date after date, they discovered new things about the other one, Tommy particularly loved the moment she arrived at her apartment, kicking her high heels while he poured some wine as she stretched her legs on the couch. By now he had lost count of how many skirts and dresses she owned, but he knew she wore a different outfit to every trial.
Now they were both wearing casual outfits, comfortable shoes and she added a light scarf around her neck, both completely out of their elements.
Tommy leaned on his back enjoying not having everyone bothering every three minutes, the silence, peace, not feeling anxious about his next meeting or the papers piling up to sign on his desk, the atmosphere calm, he even took several minutes admiring the sighting… not every day he got to have all of that.
“Did you fall asleep?” Y/N whispered nudging her nose against his cheek.
“No, I’m just relaxing as you said I should.” He confessed opening one eye to look at her.
The autumn breeze made a chill run up and down her back, instinctively Tommy’s hand started caressing over the jumper as if he had been able to feel it. He was lying down on his back. This was the prettiest sunset she had ever seen, the lake catching the reflection of the sky, copying the oranges tones, as well as the incredible trees before her eyes, it looked like it was taken out of professional photograph.
Closing the novel she had been reading, Y/N turned around and rested an arm and head on his torso, adapting to the calm rhythm of his breathing. Taking in the scar on his chin, she wondered how he got it.
“I can feel you staring.” He stated with his eyes closed, hidden under his Ray Bans.
“Just admiring the view,” she admitted, “and the calmness.”
A smile started forming on his lips, but he didn’t move from his position, loving the way her body felt against his.
“I can’t remember the last time I took a day off.”
Y/N chuckled switching her position to lay down next to him. “That’s exactly why I suggested it. You needed to relax.”
“I was relaxed.” He defended quickly.
“Ugh you can be so stubborn sometimes, you were under so much stress, it wasn’t fun to be around.”
In mere seconds, Tommy pinned Y/N under his body.
She squealed and tried to kick her legs while he was holding his weight on his arms to not crush her down.
“Oh let me show ya how much fun I can be.” He adviced with a smirk, grinding against her sweet body, changing completely the atmosphere.
“This is dangerous… and wild.”
Apart from the cottage and the very few villages at the other side of the lake, they were practically on their own.
“No one is around.” He answered playfully looking from left to right, attacking Y/N’s neck afterwards.
A wave of electricity ran through every nerve in her body. Deep down she knew this was a side of him that not all the people got to see, and it wasn’t really so frequent.
“But… you’ll have to be on top darling, I’m not getting any younger.” Tommy joked resuming his previous position.
“I don’t ever want to go back to the city.” Y/N murmured as they snuggled, loving their surroundings close to the cottage. “Look at you. Who would’ve thought you would end up enjoying this?”
“I’m a man full of surprises, love.”
His hand sneaked around her waist, bringing her body above his.
Y/N giggled, but let him pull her closer, Tommy loved that look on her as the sun about to go down shone through her.
“Oh Mr. Surprises I think we should rent this Airbnb more often.” She absolutely fell in love with the cottage and everything around it. It was small, cozy and had everything they needed.
Tommy cleared his throat. “Speaking of Airbnb…” he took in her beauty for an instant, “when we go back to the city, I’m planing to make an offer for the place.”
Y/N looked at him with shock written all over her face.
“What? Why?”
“Because I love how happy you look.”
Her smile grew and the space in her face wasn’t enough to hold it. “Tommy!”
He felt her smile against his lips as they kissed, but soon she moved away from his body to wrap a cardigan around her shoulders.
“And I also think it’s time you meet my son, Charlie… and the rest of my family.”
Before Y/N could answer something, Tommy continued. “I know we said we’d take it slow, but we’ve been dating for a while and you already know I’m deadly serious about this, why waste time?” He shuddered. “My sister specially has been very adamant to meet you.”
“Woah, you really want to make this official?”
Tommy nodded.
“I couldn’t feel more sure about us, since the moment I saw you walking into the restaurant that first time I thought shit, this is it, this is the one for me.”
“I’m so glad you sent that first message, I had decided earlier I’d give up looking and close the app.” Y/N ran her hands up and down his chest.
His knuckles caressing her cheek.
“Tell me about Charlie.” She asked. Eyelids half closed from his delicate touch.
And now it was his turn to smile because he absolutely knew she was the one.

look i just need to write a big venty post about petty problems it's fine
i COULD write this in a private journal but in the interest of saving my wrists im just gonna yell at my public blog aggretsuko style!!!!! like i'm. a little worried that i'm extra angry and irritated at everything since i started on T, but i also feel like i'm just currently wading through a curse of a thousand cuts and i'm just reaching maximum capacity okay. like these are all small petty things, nothing is going to ruin my life, people experience far worse things all the time everywhere i'm just so SICK of trying to do so much and ending up wasting my time and money and energy all the time constantly!!!!!!!!!!!
i already complained about how much stress having legally moved to sweden has caused me and how i can't get my travels to the evil gender clinic reimbursed and a bunch of other annoying problems, and how i had to do so many stupid annoying phone calls - phone calls are FINE but they're only available within very specific working hours and it's so fucking annoying if you're at school or work and like!!!!!!!! i need to take time off to make a private phone call!!!!!!!!! and then all the times i had to follow up on goddamn fucking gender clinic just to get ANY help with the thing they PROMISED ME, and just today i sent them ANOTHER message just to make sure that thing is GOING ANYWHERE AT ALL............. and then calling my phone provider AGAIN and being told to send them ANOTHER EMAIL!!!!!!! DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED LAST I SENT THEM AN EMAIL (because that's what they told me to do when i called them the first time). I GOT TOLD TO CALL THEM!!!! FUCKING HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WON'T YOU LET ME OUT OF THE TORMENT NEXUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm almost out of mobile data and i can't top up on it because ONLY THE OWNER OF THE SUBSCRIPTION CAN DO THAT. DO YOU KNOW WHO THE OWNER IS???? MY DEADNAME!!!!!!!! IT'S ME EXCEPT I CAN'T DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!! FUCK OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
and do you know why i'm almost out of data!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because the room i'm staying in has such garbage wifi connectivity i need to turn off the wifi to do anything on my phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's like the shitty tall bed is a no-wifi zone!!!!!!!!! i can't believe this is happening. i haven't run out of mobile data in YEARS like what the FUCK is going on. what kind of data drain goblin is drinking all the internets in my phone!!!! and YES i checked the data spending stats and it makes no sense WHY IS THIS HAPPENING. im hoping that if my email to the phone provider is sad wet and pathetic enough they'll gift me some free data for being sent back and forth like a goddamn ping pong ball.
do you know who i want to give a call though. the norwegian post. if their phone queue wasn't like 23583249843298 people i would like to ask them very kindly WHY THE FUCK DID THEY BILL ME 80 FUCKING KRONER FOR SENDING A POST CARD. IT WAS 3 PITIFUL GRAMS OVER THE STAMP LIMIT. LIKE I KNOW I'M TECHNICALLY IN THE WRONG BUT IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE I FORGOT THAT NORWAY HAS A LOWER LIMIT THAN SWEDEN AND I JUST. AUGUHGHHG I WANTED TO SEND MY FRIENDS A **POST CARD** AND A CUTE STICKER!!!!!!!! but i decided on not calling them because i don't want to spend 1.5 hours waiting to speak to someone just to complain about a fine that was earned even if unfair. but then. AND THEN. the holy grail of spiteful petty frustrations.
i decided to purchase an Item. but in the attempt of not getting a thing tied to Bad Monopoly Corporation i purchased a different thing from Another Bad Monopoly Corporation. WHICH WAS MY FIRST MISTAKE. NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN!!! then the Item is sent to the post office super far away and it's such a hassle getting there and it kinda sucked but okay. normal day for me i guess! but then it turns out the Item doesn't even WORK because it's FUCKING REGION LOCKED. AND IT WASN'T GONNA DO THE THING I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DO ANYWAY. BECAUSE BAD MONOPOLY CORPORATION HAS A MONOPOLY ON THE FUNCTION I DESIRED!! HAHA!! OKAY COOL fine i get to return the item and get my money back right??? right. right!!!! so when i finally have access to a printer i print out all the custom slips and return slips and just all the things!!!! okay!!!!!! and i send it off!!!!!! okay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT THEN IT GETS RETURNED TO ME!!!! BUT TO SWEDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BECAUSE I WAS STUPID AND WROTE MY SWEDISH ADDRESS AS THE RETURN ADDRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY RETURNED IT BECAUSE THE CUSTOMS SLIP WAS WRONG?????? was it because i put it on the back of the envelope??? the post office people said it was fine :(((((( post office people stop getting me in trouble 2k24!!!!!!!!!!! i intended to call the post customer service about it because im so tired of everything being a money drain and i want to know why they did this and im just so frustrated with everything going fucking wrong but. what do i even say. i don't think i have it in me to wait in an hour long queue when i can only call during the hours i'm at my watchmaker placement :(((((( the strength has left my body and i'd like to cry instead thanks
anyway i contact customer service for Bad Monopoly Corporation like hey i sent it off but it got returned and im out of town can you pretty pretty please extend the return deadline. but because Bad Monopoly Corporation probably only gives their customer service workers negative two seconds to read emails they didn't even respond to my email they were like "follow these steps to return your item :)" three times before they actually replied to me and told me they can't extend the deadline. fucking fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i get my landlord to do it!!!!!!!!!!! VERY COOL NOT HUMILIATING AT ALL. HOPEFULLY IT GOES THROUGH THIS TIME OR IM GOING TO EXPLODE INTO A MILLION BILLION PIECES FOREVER
also i purchased a can of sparkling water at a bar the other day and it cost 60 kroner :((((((((((((( that's like 6 americadollars. i think that's evil actually
#these are not even all the Things theyre just the most. i wanna yell. i wanna cry !!#i feel like ive been hogging a lot of space in my friend servers vent channels lately just to complain about small things and i#feel bad about itttttttttt#everything happens so much!!!!!!!!!!!!#ok i have written it out and i had a smoothie and ive listened to some tunes im doing okayer now#i think i can handle tiny stuff like 'patreon app changed a tiny part of their layout and i hate it' much better when it's not another drop#in the full glass ya feel.

Supernormal WiFi happenings here, I guess. My phone's Spotify sound just suddenly started coming out of this tablet up on a shelf in Mr. C's office at surprisingly high volume, instead of my headphones. A tablet I didn't even really remember existed and had never paired anything to. 🤔
And at like 2:30 a.m., no less.
Yep, that's our culprit! I can see the album art on a lockscreen widget and everything. I didn''t think he even used Spotify, or we'd probably have a family account for that too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nope, can't do much about it on this end.
Yep, his Google account pic is still from one of our wedding photos 20 years ago. Thus the funny collar, and red beard instead of silver.
I also incidentally just knocked a shower of random objects down, pulling the tablet down off the shelf. Ah well, at least it's not potentially bothering any neighbors now.
Thankfully, disconnecting my headphones and reconnecting them on the phone's Bluetooth did fix the problem. (?) So, that's something.
In other news, one of the objects I managed to knock down in there was this pack of crispbread.
I have no idea where that even came from, but sure I'll take it with me. Random video game drop? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They may be broken all to hell after the fall from wherever, but hey it's free crackers and I was getting low on crispbread.

September is birthday month, if anyone's wondering why my acquisition of books appears to have slipped again (picture #2). At least I'd read nearly all of them before they joined my library shelves, and Winter's Gifts, well, it's really easy to read an Aaronovitch novella within a day or two of acquiring it. Especially since…
September was also week-vacation month, which is part of how I made it to 13 books read but very little explanation for my read-from-TBR-shelves stack (picture #1), only two of which I read on holiday. The two short ones I read in the gap between "finished the latest Book Of Substance" and "started the official Vacation Stack", and Digger was one of my 2023 goals so I decided to check that off. Baking Yesteryear was a surprise/accident. I was telling a coworker how much I enjoyed reading the library's copy and they said, "hey, while you were off, we got a copy too damaged to sell…". And one has to treat oneself in birthday month.
(Vacation was good, in case you were wondering. Camping, so no wifi, so lots of outdoors and reading time and charming rodent shenanigans.)
My biggest regret of the month, by which we mean less regret and more mild bookish panic, is the number of reading copies I appear to have taken home. I have one for Menewood which I'm planning to get to once I finish with My Roommate is a Vampire, and the rest of them were, well, um. Look. When your store buyer and random publishers send you books you'd enjoy and your coworkers finish reading ARCs you've been interested in, things happen, okay? At least at this point a lot of the books are coming out next year, which probably doesn't bode well for my 2024 TBR but that is a future problem.
Also, not doing great at my goal of reading a Canadian author every month. This is the second (?) month in a row I've failed on that front which, yes, is why I'm reading a Canadian author right now. (Also it's one of those ARCs a coworker finished with.)
Beyond the bookish stuff, there's not much to report. I've written a good bit and am surprising myself by how much I can write on my phone during a commute. Had a good birthday. Ate good food. Got fun things. Dealt with slightly more chaos at work than usual. Finished the last season of Great British Bake-Off aired in Canada and am looking forward to starting the Canadian version tonight.
How was your September?
And now without further ado, in order of enjoyment…

THUMBS DOWN THURSDAY
We got a call from the hospital at 4:00 this morning. Kitten's mom was agitated so they gave her something to calm her down. Apparently they didn't read her charts or history.
The part that says she has alzheimer's. Or the part that says do not give benzodiazepines. Or maybe they just didn't know that you do not mix benzodiazepines and alzheimer's.
Benzodiazepines can have the opposite effect on dementia patients. Instead of calming them it induces hallucinations, paranoia, and other problems. The staff is learning this fact the hard way.
Now for at least 24 hours they are going to have to deal with an angry 90-year-old hellion who keeps trying to remove her oxygen, IVs, and whatever else is connected to her.
SMDH.
Yesterday they talked to Kitten about her mom possibly spending a week or two in a rehab center until she is strong enough to come home. I don't know what effect this event will have on that plan.
Meanwhile, AT&T is having a big outage this morning. We have AT&T but we know that we had service at 4AM. Actually, we have wifi calling enabled on both phones so it wouldn't matter. I recommend it.
According to AT&T's website our service is down afterall. As long as we're connected to wifi the point is moot.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to do a Yelp review on today and give it a thumbs down.
I love you, baby. You are always a thumbs up with me. MWAH!
Y'all have a great day.
