thinking of setting myself a writing challenge to help break up working on my longer fic
would anyone be interested in reading 500 word (or less!) drabbles written from a random word generator??
or! people could send me a word and i write something from that
obvs the focus would be sapphic witches, because i have one brain cell and it will always be ✨ women ✨

Who's Danny's best friend?
Thank you for the ask! ☺️
Danny has a circle of besties that he would trust with his life. Currently out of the canon HL characters, Garreth, Poppy, Amit, Samantha, Ominis and Imelda I have more solid stablished headcanons for. I don't have much for Danny's interactions with Anne and Sebastian yet, other than they would get along well though the troublemaking nature of Sebs concerns him sometimes. For sure I know that Garreth, Poppy, Amit, Samantha and Ominis would be among Danny's best friends. Eventually, he and Poppy start a romance around their fourth or fifth year.
His friendship with Imelda also deserves an honorable mention. She and Danny are also friendly rivals at Quidditch and respect each other immensely. They start to get closer after the incident where Everett and Astoria trick Imelda into stealing first year Zenobia's gobstones in their third year. Danny helps Imelda confront her flaws and better handle peer pressure and upholding her reputation.
That's the current state at which my HL canon friendships for Danny are at, it'll change in the future as I expand his interactions.

Chapter four Raspberry and Scones
As I was pacing through the deserted corridors and up the marble staircases on my way to the Ravenclaw common room, I couldn’t get my mind off her eyes. Why did I find them so icy? Why can’t I erase the picture from my mind? Why did no one else notice it? Surely, there must be something wrong with me…
I absent-mindendly reached the end of the circular room, to find Samanta circling up and down in front of the windows, bending left and right, getting into all sorts of strange positions. ‘What on earth are you doing, Sam? Stretching?’ I asked her with a grin. ‘No,’ she looked up from her plant, eyes glistening with enthusiasm. ‘I want him to be in the perfect place. Somewhere he’ll be happy!’ ‘By dancing around it?’ ‘No, Lia!’ she frowned. ‘Great golden gobstones, I can’t seem to find it.’ ‘Well, I am not sure the others would take great care of him here, anyway… How about we put him in our dormitory? There is a handsome place next to the window…’ ‘I suppose you’re right,’ she sighed. ‘I just reckoned people would appreciate having more greenery around… But anyway, I’ll get my basket from our room, there is still some scones my mother gave. Shall we go down to the others? Amit said everyone would be down for the afternoon.’ ‘All right, we shall.’
We left the common room with the basket of scones, a blanket, and bottles of raspberry syrup, that Astoria Cricket presented us. ‘I hate it with burning passion, but my uncle forgets it every year, and sends me multiple bottles…Please, take them, I can’t bear the smell’ she said with a thud and dumped a whole box at us. ‘We can now make a proper picnic with all this!’ gushed Samantha, skipping down the stairs.
When we stepped out of the castle, we realised why the corridors were so deserted, as the whole school seemed to have the same idea to spend the last of the warm afternoons outside. There were scattered groups of students laying in the grass all around the grounds, playing games like wizards chess, gobstones or cards, others were flying around in the sky, chasing each other. We passed a group of second-years tearing about, and sat down next to Natty, under the shade of a great tree. She seemed to be highly amused, as she watched Imelda and Garreth. ‘Garreth hasn’t stopped annoying Imelda with something since we left class. He wouldn’t admit it, but I think he does it to make her forget about the whole Quiddich issue.’ ‘I would say he succeeds at that. She seems nothing but infuriated,’ I said, narrowing my eyes in the bright sunlight. At that moment Imelda and Garreth were transferring their chase into the sky, hopping on merlin-knows-whose broomstick. His laughter filled the entire sky, while swishing around with a neck breaking speed. ‘They are getting along quite well, don’t you think?’ ‘I wouldn’t say getting along is the right term, though… ‘looked Samantha up from the blanket she set the picnic up. ‘BOOOYS, WOULD YOU LIKE SOME SCONES?’ she shouted at the top of her lungs, waving in the direction of Amit, Everett and Leander Prewett, who were sitting near the fountain. ‘Oooh, scones? Are they filled? Not? No problem, I always have some pumpkin jam with me in case I get hungry. Hold on…’ said Leander appearing next to us so quickly, you would think he dissaparated. ‘Pumpkin jam, you say? But we don’t have anything to scoop it with…’ said Sam wryly. ‘Ha, I’m no mere amateur, Samantha. I always bring spoons of course. How else would I eat it? Out of the can? That would be weird. ‘Yes, that would definitely be weird.’ said Amit with a grin. ‘You can ridicule me all you want, Amit, but you’ll think of me and my delicious pumpkin jam, when you sit hungry on a Transfiguration class. And then… then you shall understand. Excellent scones, by the way, Samantha. Is it made with nutmeg? I can taste it. You see, I’ ‘OMINIIIIS. OVER HERE.’ bellowed Amit as he sighted the boy stepping out the wooden front door. ‘We’re having a picnic, care to join?’ ‘Well, all right,’ said Ominis timidly, looking a bit lost without Sebastian on his side.
As we all settled down on the blanket, opened the bottles of raspberry juice and even glazed some of the scones with Leander’s pumpkin jam, I turned to Ominis. ‘How is Anne faring? Have you heard of her?’ ‘When I visited them in the summer, she seemed well, given the circumstances. Occupies herself with reading and wandering around the cottages mostly. Keeps her mind busy.’ ‘Good to hear. We all hope she can return momentarily.’ ‘Sebastian is doing all he can, even if it gets him into trouble, unfortunately. But he is stubborn, nothing will change his determination,’ said Ominis with a tone of deepest fondness, biting a bit of unjammed scone. ‘Speaking of which. Is he visiting her? I can’t see him around…’ I asked, trying to sound completely casual. But why was my face heating? ‘No, he is off to Hogsmeade with the new girl.’ ‘Oh, really? That is nice, the weather is great for a walk, I suppose,’ I forced a smile. But why is it bothering me? It doesn’t make sense at all. ‘Indeed,’ said Ominis with a smile on the corner of his lips. ‘But I suppose, the reason is more likely the command of Professor Weasley.’ I was glad he couldn’t see the sudden relieved expression of my face, or the crimson colour of my cheeks, that had nothing to do with the heat of the settling sun.

Night owl or Morning person?
Are they a night owl or a morning person? Tags: Somehow put fluff and some cutesy stuff in here. Also not proofread sorry. This HC set contains the following characters: Sebastian, Ominis, Garreth, Leander, Amit, Andrew, Everett, Natty, Poppy, and Imelda. Rating: General Audiences. ..
Summary: My headcanons for if the Hogwarts Legacy students are Night owls or morning people!
Tumblr media
Sebastian:
He is 100% a night owl.
He spends hours reading late into the night.
He also just really loves nighttime so he’d rather be awake during the night.
This boy hates early mornings.
If he’s not up by breakfast, he’s rolling out of bed and getting to class right before it starts.
Obviously, not every morning because he has Ominis to wake him up and get him going but most mornings he’s still out of it and would rather go back to sleep but of course his education is still very important. ..
Ominis:
Morning person
He’s probably up late into the night but he’s actually a pretty big fan of getting up early in the morning.
Waking up early gives him some time to get ready and spruce himself up before classes and gives him some time alone before having to deal with Sebastian’s antics.
And since bright lights aren’t an issue for him, he can usually fall asleep anywhere at any time and make up for the sleep he may have lost by waking up early.
He also finds early mornings to be the most peaceful part of his day. Although he can’t physically see the sunrise, he likes to sit outside and feel the warm sunshine on his face. ..
Garreth:
He’s not a night owl but he’s definitely not a morning person either.
He’s going to bed early and waking up late, sorry I don’t make the rules.
He just really likes his sleep.
But of course, he never misses breakfast, even if that means he’s rolling out of bed with messy hair and robes to get there in time.
Just a sleepy boy, okay. But he doesn’t let his Aunt know how much he sleeps in right before important things. ..
Leander:
A mix of both, perhaps? More on the morning side, though.
Sometimes he’s up late simply because he got distracted and then got focused on whatever caught his eye.
And then other nights he’s out like a light.
Although, usually he’s up early enough in the mornings to make sure he’s up and ready for the morning.
Don’t judge him for how long it takes to do his hair in the mornings.
But his favorite mornings are when he wakes up and automatically feels like he can just take on the day with full confidence. :)
Amit:
NIGHT OWL 100%
And not even because he’s rebellious or is stubborn the boy just wants to see his stars.
He will spend hours upon hours looking at and charting the stars. They really are his best friend when he thinks about it.
But even then he’s a very dedicated student so he’s still up early in the morning to get ready for school and be perfectly on time for breakfast and for his morning classes. ..
Andrew:
He just strikes me as a morning person.
But not the kind to wake up really early, he just enjoys his mornings.
He takes them very slowly and has a pretty set routine that he likes to do in his mornings to help him feel like his days are going smoothly.
Morning walks after the sun is up are some of his favorites. He also likes to read outside when the weather is just right. ..
Everett:
Night owl and the opposite of Amit because he’s a night owl strictly for rebellious purposes.
Well, most of the time anyway.
We know he’s a prankster so he’ll stay up late waiting for everyone to be asleep just so he can snatch Zenobia’s gobstones again or stay up late to secretly plan another prank with Astoria Crickett.
He gets caught a lot because he’s clumsy but you bet he’s gonna stay up late to try again.
And he just hates the mornings. The worst part of the day for him. ..
Natty:
Morning person.
She’ll stay up late if she needs to but she just prefers mornings.
She loves the sunrise and the feeling of the warm sun so basically mornings are her best friend most days.
She loves early morning walks and loves it even more if her close friends and companions can join her on them.
And when her friends are up before her just to get ready for the walk? Oh, you best believe you guys are gonna be best friends forever at that point. ..
Poppy:
Dare I say she’s a night owl?
For whatever reason she’s up late, probably playing with whatever nocturnal beasts she’s befriended, she loves to do it.
She doesn’t mind getting up early if she has a good reason to, such as feeding the beasts early, but usually, she likes to sleep in quite a bit.
There’s just something so peaceful about the night that she loves and she’d much rather be up late to experience it than be up early. ..
Imelda:
Morning person.
Not only is she a morning person but she’s a super morning person.
This girl wakes up at the crack of dawn just to get to the Quidditch pitch and train before anyone else can get there.
She has a strict routine for practicing every morning and she holds herself to it.
She thrives off of the energy she gets from waking up so early and going out there to practice and so mornings are just her thing. ..

Hogtober Day 28: Portraits
AO3/Wattpad
Tumblr media
I should never have spoken with that bloody portrait.
Elsie grumbled to herself as she mounted her broom and flew past Marunweem to find the other frame of the prattling portrait of Ferdinand Octavius Pratt. If she hadn't impulsively agreed to it before learning more information from Astoria Crickett, she would have stayed back at the castle where it was safe and warm.
Instead, she found herself fighting off Ashwinders in a remote location to rescue the obnoxious tattle-tale from a dire fate that he most likely deserved for his nonsense.
"Well, don't just stand there!" Ferdinand screeched from the other side of the gate. "Find a way to open the door!"
Elsie rolled her eyes as she cast a careless alohamora at the lock and watched it fall to the ground before bursting into the room. "Calm down! I'm here now."
"Calm down?" Ferdinand clutched his chest, affronted. "Those buffoons outside have been talking about burning me!"
"Can't say I blame them." Elsie ran her fingers along her wand. "I have half a mind to do that myself."
Ferdinand scoffed as he attempted to brush off the swarming moths from his portrait. "Oh, please. The Three Broomsticks is where I belong! Now, chop-chop! I need to be back there before cocktail hour."
Elsie tsked and tilted her head. "No."
"No?!"
She lifted her wand. "I spent all year being bossed around by petulant, egotistical portraits. I'm certainly not going to allow that to happen again."
She took a step back as Ferdinand gasped. "What are you doing?"
Elsie gave him an impish smile. "Ta-ta, Ferdinand."
"W-wait, you can't!"
"Confringo."
She strutted out of the cave to the sound of Ferdinand Octavius Pratt's caterwauling behind her.
~
"Ready for our study session?" Sebastian asked, carrying a stack of books as he approached Elsie in the halls a few days later.
She smiled up at him and tossed her braid behind her head. "As I'll ever be."
"Great." He beamed at her, casting an evansesco at their combined study materials and offering his arm. "Our usual spot in the back of the library, then?"
"Actually," she chewed her lower lip, "perhaps the Undercroft would be a better option. You know, change of...scenery?"
Sebastian frowned. "The Undercroft? That's -" He narrowed his eyes at her sheepish expression. "What did you do?"
Elsie sighed, disappointed in her face for being unable to hide anything from him. She would still rather offer him an explanation than spend their study session with Ferdinand's melodramatic speeches in the background and knowing she was the cause of it. She took Sebastian's arm and started to lead him in the direction of the DADA Tower.
"I'll tell you about it on the way there."

Crossed Wands Headcanon
I like to think Crossed wands isn’t that exclusive Lucan is just really strict and kicks people out a lot. I also had so much fun writing Crossed wands stuff in my Ominis x MC fic wanted to explore what other students fighting style would be.
~
Ominis, Sebastian, Leander, Garreth, Natty, Imelda, Poppy, Anne, Lucan
~
Ominis
He tried out because Sebastian begged him.
The most graceful duellist you would ever lay your eyes on.
Never misses. Never loses. IF you are lucky and get even a single hit on him, he goes FERAL. He is a naturally talented wizard due to his Slytherin blood so he will OBLITERATE anyone who tries it.
Is the only known ‘member’ other than MC to have beaten Sebastian.
Didn’t join officially because he didn’t want people to assume Gaunts are savages
Only returned to Crossed wands once. And that was to spar against Duncan when he was invited to join.
Duncan forfeit…obviously…didn’t even make an attempt
Sebastian
Can get away with a LOT because he’s charming.
If be blasts you into a wall, it takes one conversation and you’re apologising for being in the way
One talk with Lucan and he’s laughing, all is forgiven
Lucan let’s him get away with some BS because they’re friends (and because Sebastian is the best and puts up a good show)
Did panic when you beat him DADA that his position in Crossed Wands would be compromised
HUGE relief when you decide to partner with him instead of rivalling him
Leander
Has a weakness to crowd control spells
Doesn’t know why just can’t seem to repel them
Is surprisingly good at getting out of them though, probably from practise
Froze him? He’s out of it in seconds before you can cast your next spell. Floating? Doesn’t even care. He’s either casting whilst floating or he’s on the floor before it matters
Is usually how he gets a hit in from people underestimating him
Isn’t as bad as people make out. He’s just a bit of an idiot. Think Neville vibes
Garreth
Is a Pureblood wizard so very talented after being exposed to magic his whole life
Fighting isn’t his thing, gets really bored in match’s and just starts levitating people and doing nothing about it. Just let’s them float and laughs.
LOVES FLIPPENDO
Got REALLY bored and started tossing potions around. Giggled like a mad man when the fireworks display of potion carnage enveloped the stage. Received a warning for it
Was permanently banned after he downed a Maxima and Focus potion before a duel with Sebastian. Almost beat him. They only noticed he’d took the potions cause he was violently shaking afterwards. Sebastian found it hilarious.
Natty
Almost as graceful as Ominis…almost
No one bothers using Expelliamus as everyone knows she can cast without a wand
Terrifying to go up against
She smiles sweetly the entire time, laughing sometimes
Will call you pet names
Everyone thinks she’s being snide but she’s genuinely just happy
Happy to lose, Happy to win, Happy to draw
Utterly terrifying
Imelda
Literally could not care less about Crossed Wands.
Tries out in fifth because quidditch got cancelled and she had a gap in her routine
Tries to use her broom in combat, finding it easier to cast from it and gain the upper hand
Receives a warning for doing so
Teaches Lucan some new cuss words after shouting at him for giving him a warning
Lucan is now in love with her
Poppy
Oh it’s just Perculiar Poppy, she’ll do no harm right?
Wrong! She was raised by poachers being cruel has been bred into her
Got banned after she hung Astoria Crickett by her hair for fifteen minutes
Screamed the entire time about how it’s not nice when it’s happening to you and calling her a Kneazle
It took Sebastian, MC and Natty to drag her away
Anne
Would assume she’d be similar to Sebastian
If it’s even possible, she has less patience
Her and Sebastian are total opposites when it comes to duelling
She’s more similar to Garreth (this is why I ship them)
Is a bit more fond of potions than wand work. Never really took to it.
Gave up and agreed to watch Sebastian from the sidelines with Ominis
Lucan
“Me duel? No no no, I’m a showman. I appreciate the craft. I could duel…but I won’t”
Everyone mothers him.
If he does ever spar, the person on the receiving end always feels bad for whatever they do to him. Giving him a big hug afterwards.
MC once blasted him into a barrel
He thought it was fantastic
MC hugs him and refuses to let go until it’s their next duel
Masterlist

EVERYONE HAS BROWN EYES!
Except Garreth, Ominis, Cressida and Adelaide!
Tumblr media
Long post full of slightly unflattering pictures of eyes and eyebrows incoming:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or so I found. If you can name any other NPC who doesn't have brown eyes, please do so! Garreth can't be the only one with green eyes! (Among the students at least, haven't checked the adults yet...)
Now, let the brown-eyed-parade commence! (I really am not complaining!)
Starting with: Sebastian, Poppy, unnamed Slytherin boy and Andrew Larson
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing with: Grace Pinch-Smedley, Astoria Crickett, Zenobia Noke and Leander
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On with: Samantha Dale, Natsai Onai, Amit Thakkar, Lucan Brattleby and Nellie Oggspire
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last and certainly least (sorry): Duncan Hobhouse and Everett Clopton
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Concluding: 15 out of these 19 students have brown eyes. The lighting was never 100% perfect for these, but despite my bad eyesight I can at least confirm that Cressida and Adelaide do have blue-ish eyes (or green-ish?! The longer I stare at those, the less sure I am XD), while the rest of the students (except Garreth and Ominis obv) range from all kinds of brown eyes (hazel and darker and whatnot, I'm no expert). Which is, I guess, quite common in Britain/Scotland? (Again, neither expert nor a native - though I just did a very quick google search and apparently brown is rather rare?! At least today, let's just say in 1890 more ppl had brown eyes...)
Also: Adelaide has the longest eyelashes and Ominis and Grace have the best groomed eyebrows! Only Everett's glasses have nose pads and all three of them are round. (Things I noticed while staring at these for hours...)
Oh and I forgot so many! Let's look at them without picture evidence (lemme check the HL wiki real quick ahem):
Nerida Roberts (brown) Imelda Reyes (brown) Violet McDowell (brown)
Lenora Everleigh (brown) Sacharissa Tugwood (green???) Arthur Plummly (brown and glasses) Charlotte Morrison (brown) Evangeline Bardsley (brown)
(so it's now 22 out of 27 for brown eyes!)
Case in point, I'd say, even more ppl with brown eyes! (Have to take pictures of Sacharissa next!)
So, yeah, thanks for coming to my TED talk!
(Brown eyes rules! Though as a green-eyed-person myself I wish there were more of us XD)

Personality
Bethany starts off as a studious, shy and socially reserved girl due to her strict upbringing. She is well-mannered and polite being raised in an aristocratic wizarding family. Being the firstborn daughter of House Pentaghast meant that her elders had great expectations for her to become the next Matriarch of her house.
Her mother and grandmother's strictness while growing up had led her to retreat to her books to daydream about tales of heroes of old as a means of escapism from her responsibilities. To her, books are her one escape from reality.
Her deep-rooted desire to escape the clutches of her demanding family and find the courage to forge her own path in life had caused the Sorting Hat to place her in Gryffindor as it overrides her desire to fulfill her elders' expectations of having her be sorted in Ravenclaw.
As she grows older, she becomes more confident and unafraid to speak her mind, influenced by Miriam Fig who inspired courage within her. She is a very kind individual whose sense of altruism would lead her to place others above herself. Even when wronged by someone, she refuses to let go of her strong moral code and treat her opponents with respect. She still prefers to treat races deemed inferior by wizardkind (Goblins, Faeries, etc) with respect despite her noble origins.
However, she does have a judgmental streak where she would display a dismissive attitude toward subjects or topics she considers illogical or regards as pseudo-science such as Astrology and Divination. This would lead her to several disagreements with her housemate Emilia Lindley, who loves both subjects dearly.
She can be dishonest with certain people, often displaying a "tsundere-like" behavior toward them. Often toward people with whom she feels conflicting emotions. Her inability to be forthcoming with them is largely influenced by how her mother would punish her harshly for expressing negative emotions.
◤━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━◥
Likes:
Tales of Chivalry and Heroism (Mainly Le Morte d'Arthur)
Rose Scented Tea
Studying in the Common Room
Solving Mysteries
Dislikes:
Ghosts/Undead Creatures
Blood Supremacist Beliefs
Pureblood Culture
Dishonest Men

History of Magic: S, Passion for reading and learning lets her excel in the subject

About her family ::
Father - Michael Wolf Pine (Diseased)
Mother - Mary-Anne Peony Pine (Diseased)
Family Background - Living most of her life surrounded by muggles was primarily her mothers choice, and throughout her early years, she was not introduced to magic or the wizarding world. Her mother aimed to keep her out of wizarding world affairs for as long as she possibly could, due to her beliefs that her own kind was too dangerous for her pure-blooded child. Because of this, they stayed in London and surrounded themselves with muggles to keep themselves hidden.
Mary-Anne’s entire life she felt more drawn to beasts, and spent most of her life only surrounded by plants rather than with people. That was, however, until she met Valerie’s father.
It was fact, that wizarding families were more prone to losing younger family members. Their inability to control their own magic made them noticeable, and in turn vulnerable to Muggle witch-hunters.
Valerie’s fathers work studying muggles was often frowned upon by his magical peers. In the 17th century, a time where Valarie’s parents were mainly raised & surrounded by fear due to the persecution of wizarding children and adults, muggles would often attempt to force witches and wizards to perform magic for their needs. And because of this wizards and witches decided to retaliate, some— even decided to harm muggles . Due to these events, there was (and still is) a heavy distrust between wizarding kind and muggles, and vice versa. Some wizards even considered starting a war with the muggles because of all the witch trials and executions. Stigma still lies around muggles and their past hatred for wizardkind, but Valerie’s parents trust muggles more than wizarding kind because of their lack of power.
Of course, with time comes curiosity, and by the age of 11 Valerie was no longer naive enough to believe that her father was really just working an office job. Of course, she pursued learning magic in secret from her mother regardless. Valerie found ways to read her mothers old herbology journals, to access her fathers filing cabinets in his home office, where she read about the ministry of magic and found a copy of the daily prophet. Nonetheless, soon it became too hard to hide the fact that she was a witch in front of muggles.
So for the safety of her family, Valerie's mother reluctantly they decided to move to Godric's Hollow, a quaint village in the West Country of England. It was a small community, which centered on a village square with only a church, a post office, a pub, and a few retail shops (Including one she would eventually own). It was the exact kind of quiet they needed, even if Valerie’s mother did not completely agree.
Her mother eventually had opened a retail herbology store in Godric's Hollow, that primarily served as a shop to sell ingredients for potions, etc. But she also housed quite a few magical beasts in the barn behind the shop.
Tumblr media
Death Date: 1890, September 2nd. Poachers, who happened to be passing through their small town, walked into her shop and insisted on taking the beasts off her hands for a ‘discounted price’. Her mother insisted against it, stood her ground, and made it clear she would not be giving away any of her beasts today, and especially not to them. As a result, on their way out of town the poachers proceeded to set the barn on fire. While the barn and the connecting store burnt down in a fiery blaze, her mother ran inside the barn to rescue as many beasts as she could. When she did not return after they saw most of the beasts escape, Valerie's father ran inside to save her mother as well. Neither survived the tragic incident.
Because of her parents death, she decided to take whatever money she could make selling their old property, and use it towards transferring to Hogwarts to start her 5th year and begin learning magic. Revenge drives her, and she will do anything to learn magic so she can wipe out as many poachers as she can.

Fun little bits of lore I’m overhearing.
So I’ve decided to follow NPC’s around and explore Hogwarts more. I’m catching new pieces of dialogue.
Did you know there’s a Ravenclaw with a massive crush on Everett Clopton? Her two besties, a Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are teasing her about it and she’s denying it.
A Slytherin boy tried sending a love letter to Imelda. Key word is try. It didn’t go over too well. He said something about her personality that was supposed to come off as a compliment but it didn’t.
Zenobia Nokes does not only ball at Gobstones she also does Quidditch. Her family seems really into it so one could assume she might kick butt on the field.
Also Astoria Crickett is a little shit and I’m happy some student named Hilda turned her into a worm.

Hidden Reasons Part V: Green Rose
Winter was over. The motion of spring struck her imagination as something foreign, a fiction. Green, she said to herself, A beautiful word in another language, devoid of meaning.
Preview: But Sebastian, stubborn as he is, held out hope. Perhaps it was a ruse. Or worse yet, maybe Garreth had slipped a love potion in your goblet while you weren’t looking. But the sliver of hope he held on to like a lifeline vanished as soon as he entered the great hall for dinner, eyes rested upon your figures as you sat in the farthest corner of the Gryffindor table. The two of you looked mighty cozy together indeed, Sebastian thought viciously to himself. As you and Garreth got up to leave, Garreth shot a knowing smile towards Sebastian’s way, the victorious glint in his eye unmistakable.
Series also available on AO3 here
The students of Hogwarts found themselves hunkering down within the safety of the castle walls as angry, black clouds rained down a tremendous torrent, thunder shaking the windowpanes with loud crashes that could reach the depths of the dungeons.
The mayhem outside almost matched the turmoil brewing in Sebastian’s mind and heart as he sulked by the large windows of the Slytherin dormitory, looking out into the depths of the black lake. The water was usually a vivid, sea-green color but the storm had turned it into a murky visage of dark green, black, and brown. It was hard to make out the shapes of lurking creatures and seaweed in the water as they eerily floated in and out of sight.
But Sebastian couldn’t care any less about the lake’s inhabitants now, even if he tried. He had been stewing in a foul mood since news broke of your supposed relationship with Garreth. It had happened the same day you had bumped into Sebastian and brushed him off in search of his rival. He had been on his way to join the next Crossed Wands match, eager to take out his frustrations when he found Lawrence Davies standing in the middle of a small gaggle of duelists. He was swearing up and down he just saw you leave the boy’s lavatory with Garreth Weasley in tow. A controversial piece of gossip to be sure, but Sebastian didn’t think much of that. Perhaps you were just having a conversation with Weasley outside the lavatory and Davies simply misinterpreted the situation.
However, Astoria Crickett corroborated the tale via a rumor she heard through the grapevine. “Doesn’t matter how I know, Blume herself got confirmation that the two have been sneaking around at night. And you know how dead gone she is about Weasley, she wouldn’t lie about this.”
Sebastian refused to accept it at first. Tales around Hogwarts were often spun with exaggeration, but he was already irritable, to begin with. The more he thought it over as he dodged and deflected back spells, the more he began to believe it. And the more he believed it, the more the venom of jealousy spiked in his veins, evident in the power and speed coursing through the spells he cast at his opponents. Lucan Brattleby was nearly beside himself with excitement. Not only was it one of the fastest matches Crossed Wands had ever seen, but it was also one of the most thrilling. Sebastian was matched against four fighters contending for the name of champion and yet, all four together were fiercely outmatched by his skill, his spells flying faster than they could parry. The whole club knew Sebastian was a force to be reckoned with but on that day, he solidified his place as a legend. He would have celebrated this achievement, gloated about it even, but what good was it when the one person he wanted to share this with was concerned with... other matters?
But Sebastian, stubborn as he is, held out hope.
And so, here sat Sebastian in an armchair on this dreary day, one leg crossed over the other, the furrow of his brows deepening more and more by the minute. He’d have stayed like that the rest of the day too if Imelda hadn’t disturbed his reverie.
“Oy, you,” she smacked Sebastian’s shoulder lightly. “Have you seen Gaunt? He owes me five galleons.”
Ominis was currently in the Undercroft, riding out the storm of Sebastian’s gloom. His best friend had tried to placate him with no luck. Annoyed by Sebastian’s silence, he removed himself from their dorm room until Sebastian was in a more conversational mood. Of course, Sebastian couldn’t tell her that. “I’ve no idea,” was all he managed to mutter.
“Well then, you cough up the money, seeing as he lost the bet because of you,” she demanded. Sebastian looked up at her in confusion.
“What are you going off about?”
Imelda rolled her eyes. “Gaunt and I made a bet on who’d get to ask our new fifth year out first. He bet on you while I placed my bet on anyone else, really. Thought I’d have a higher chance of winning if I broadened my choices.
Good ol’ Imelda. Sebastian couldn’t help but chuckle at her nerve. “Nothing could deter the likes of her,” he thought. Sebastian reached into his cloak and tossed her the money. He’d make Ominis pay it back later.
“While we’re on the subject,” said Imelda, holding the coins up to the light of the fireplace to inspect them, “you can be real pigheaded sometimes.”
Sebastian sat up and frowned at her. “And what do you mean by that?”
She shrugged her shoulder. “Just something for you to ponder,” she said casually as she walked away. Imelda was more perceptive than she let on, aware of the attraction you and Sebastian had from the get-go but refused to meddle in affairs she believed she had no business being in. From the bottom of her heart, she supported you and wanted nothing but the best for you, though her sharp tongue made it seem otherwise. And while your new romance with Garreth confused her greatly, her confusion paled in comparison to the annoyance she felt towards Sebastian, whose sullen discouragement was unusual of him. Normally, failure fueled his desire to try even harder. Then again, his jealousy was evidence of the impact you had on him, and Imelda was only beginning to realize how deeply his affection for you ran. Even so, she’d hope her words would nudge him enough to wise up.
And while it was certainly a leap to hope Sebastian would confront his emotions head-on, it was safe to say that it was at least enough to stir him awake from his rumination. He’d had enough moping about. It was time he got the word straight from the source. With renewed determination, Sebastian uncrossed his leg, got up, strode across the common room, and left the dormitory, unknowingly watched by Imelda.
“Took you long enough,” she mumbled.
_______________________________________________________________________
“Weasley, might I have a word?” Sebastian leisurely strolled up to Garreth, who had been conversing with Duncan Hobhouse in the courtyard outside the entrance hall. Duncan bade Garreth farewell as the latter leaned his elbows forward on the stone railing. The storm had slowed to a drizzle and Garreth, seeking respite from the crowded Gryffindor tower, was enjoying the view of dark clouds over the purple horizon as the wind blew the tresses of hair gently across his face.
“Will this be a common occurrence, Sallow?” said Garreth, “I didn’t realize you were that interested in me.”
Sebastian ignored his remark. “How’d you do it? Love potion from J.Pippins? Or did you brew one yourself?”
“Would it be so hard to accept that she simply fell for me?”
“Doubt that,” Sebastian deadpanned. He leaned against the railing beside Garreth. “I refuse to believe she’d be the type to be won over so easily.”
That much, Garreth could sadly agree with. “I know what you’re capable of Sallow, you’re cunning and one of the brightest in our year. You could achieve anything you set your mind to. And I knew the only way to beat a Slytherin was to start thinking like one.”
“Elaborate.”
“Now now, a wizard can’t show all his tricks now, can he?” said Garreth good-naturedly. Annoyance flashed across Sebastian’s face.
“Be coy all you want, I’m not giving up easily,” said Sebastian.
“I was expecting you’d say that,” Garreth said quietly. “And neither will I.”
Sebastian watched Garreth from the corner of his eyes, recalling the early days of their acquaintance. Garreth had come in as a bright-eyed first year whose eagerness and enthusiasm had always been directed at sweets and potions. He had been a bit pudgier back in the day but had an established appeal about him from the start, already charming himself out of tricky situations with professors, prefects, and peers alike. Now here he stood, a much different person four years later. His face still held a bit of stoutness to it, but a sharp prominence had begun to form around his cheeks and jaw. He’d been growing his hair out, much to the delight of his admirers, and as most Weasleys were apt to do, Garreth had sprung up in height and build. Sebastian couldn’t help but wonder: when did Weasley change all of a sudden?
Along with that came the realization that he had severely underestimated Garreth, expecting him to be the same boy easily prone to distraction. Any girl that managed to catch his eye was quickly disregarded in lieu of adventures to Hogsmeade and covert troublemaking. His sudden drive to win you over, the perseverance of his feelings, all this was new not just to Sebastian, but to Garreth’s friends and the onlookers intrigued by the progression of this whole affair. Therefore, it was a bitter pill to swallow, acknowledging that Garreth had been a few steps ahead of him.
“If it makes you feel any better,” Garreth began reluctantly, “she and I aren’t officially together.” He looked down at his hands, fiddling with a thread coming undone from his sleeve. Garreth believed Sebastian was owed a bit of the truth, at the very least. It wouldn’t be honorable, otherwise. “It’s… more out of convenience than romance.”
“And why would she do that?” Sebastian asked, perplexed, although he couldn’t deny the uplift in his chest.
“That’s not for me to say,” Garreth continued. “You’re more than welcome to ask her, of course.”
“And you’re alright with this? Does she know how you feel?”
“She will, eventually.” Garreth sighed, resting his chin on his hand. “With half the work already done, I’m just happy to spend time by her side.”
The warm look on Garreth’s face ascertained as much and despite the new revelation, the bud of envy had already bloomed in Sebastian’s heart. It bothered him that you chose to share your secrets with Garreth than with him. Was he not trustworthy in your eyes? He took the fall for you when Peeves caught the both of you in the restricted section, guided you on your first trip to Hogsmeade, fought a rampant troll by your side without question; he even placed his friendship with Ominis at risk by showing you the Undercroft. And yet you chose to bequeath your time to Garreth.
Sebastian shook his head. He shouldn’t be thinking this way. While he liked having others in his debt, it was wrong to see your relationship with him as transactional. He wanted you to like him for who he was, not for what he could do for you.
“Say, Sallow,” said Garreth, having drifted off into thoughts of his own, “Don’t let her know I told you.”
Sebastian nodded, grateful that Garreth was willing to impart the truth to him. Had they been in each other’s shoes, Sebastian wasn’t quite so certain he would’ve done the same.

“Truth or dare?”
“Truth”
You were in the great hall, taking advantage of the solitary quiet to study and catch up on your assignments with Natty, the storm’s downpour preventing any study by the lakeside as you’d hoped. In between meals, the great hall served as a study hall proctored either by a professor, a prefect, or a head boy or girl. However, the current proctor was a certain head boy from Hufflepuff who had whisked Natty away to the Hufflepuff table. Judging by their close proximity to one another and the shy glances they exchanged, this was the seventh year she was hinting about. A tall, dark lad with a brilliant smile and a deep huskiness to his voice, you could see why she was so enamored with him. You couldn’t blame her for wanting to hide him away from the world.
But his distraction with your study partner had caused an uptick in noise as more students began trickling in to study, confined to stay indoors, including several of your girl friends who had spotted you and decided to join you at your table. First, it was Samantha, followed by the Hufflepuff trio consisting of Poppy, Adelaide, and Lenora. Constance Dagworth, upon seeing Samantha, decided to pile in on the party and was accompanied by fellow Crossed Wands member Nerida Roberts. And finally, the last to insert themselves were Imelda and Grace Pinch-Smedley. By the time Natty rejoined you, she found you in the middle of a rowdy group of girls playing truth or dare. You were dutifully trying to finish an essay on Jupiter and the orbital trajectory you observed in your star charts, but the chatter that flitted across the table was too exciting not to partake in.
“Alright Poppy, did you or did you not meet up with Prewett behind the greenhouses?” Lenora asked excitedly.
“I did,” Poppy answered nonchalantly.
“Did you two kiss?”
“Hold on, how many questions am I supposed to answer?”
“Answer the damn question, Sweeting,” Imelda commanded impatiently.
Poppy rolled her eyes. “Ugh, fine. We did.”
Adelaide leaned forward. “What was it like?” she whispered innocently. Poppy twisted her face in disgust.
“Much sloppier than I was expecting,” she said, causing the others to wrinkle their noses. “I tried to stick through it but he had a tongue like a puffskein-“
“Alright, that’s enough,” Natty interjected. “I would much rather not have to live with him under the same tower with that image in my head.”
“Would you go out with him again?” asked Samantha. “I know he likes you a great deal.”
Poppy shook her head. “I don’t think romance is in the books for me right now, ladies. Too many magical beasts to care for, not enough time. Besides, if snogging is anything like what Leander has shown me, I think I’ll pass.”
“Add Prewett to the pile of broken hearts,” Imelda muttered under her breath, unheard by the others as they moved the conversation on. You, on the other hand, caught her snark and looked up to find her looking right at you. You raised her brow at her, puzzled, but she only huffed and turned away. What was her problem?
But now that Lenora opened that can of worms, the game was now treading on more risqué territory. You held your silence, committing yourself to your scrolls as they played on, the questions getting increasingly indecent. So far, no one had the guts to pick dare.
“Dagworth, truth or dare?” asked Grace.
“Truth.”
“Do you like Hector Jenkins?”
Nerida flashed Constance a knowing smile. “Oh, I know who she likes,” she said mischievously, much to the dismay of her companion.
“Ooh, do tell,” Lenora urged. Everyone but yourself leaned forward in anticipation. Unaccustomed to being the center of attention, Constance looked down, the flush creeping up her cheeks.
“You can tell them,” Nerida goaded, nudging her friend with her shoulder. “After all, he’s the reason why you joined Crossed Wands in the first place.”
“Oh, there’s only one name I can think of…” mused Natty. “Is it…?”
“Sebastian Sallow,” Constance managed to squeak out before covering her face in embarrassment. Hushed gasps rang across the circle as a cold dread crept down to your fingers. You cursed inwardly at the blot you just made, your fingers on the quill trembling slightly. You set it down gently as you pulled your sleeves over your hands to hide them. It went without question that someone as appealing and talented as Sebastian would have admirers but facing the fact was another thing entirely.
“Sallow?” asked Imelda contemptuously. “Really?”
“Alright then Imelda, it’s your turn.” Nerida snapped viciously. “Truth or dare?”
Imelda scoffed. “Dare. Truth’s for sissies.”
Nerida looked around before laying eyes on the group of fifth-year boys that had entered the hall unnoticed by your companions. Of course, they’d be in the same room while your friends played this blasted game. You hoped Sebastian wouldn’t be there as your eyes scanned their table. No, it was just Everett with Arthur Plummly, Eric Northcott, Leander, and Garreth. You sighed with relief. You had been afraid the girls would have involved Constance and Sebastian somehow, but there was no danger of that if he weren’t here.
“Imelda Reyes,” said Nerida slowly, as a sly grin crept up her face. You were beginning to think the two Slytherins didn’t like each other very much and wondered if they shared a past disagreement. “I dare you to kiss Everett Clopton on the lips.”
Your eyes frantically darted to Imelda’s face. Despite the teasing, she remained stoic and stone-faced. “You don’t have to do this,” said Grace warily.
“Child’s play” she shrugged, rising and marching her way over to where the boys sat. She sat next to Everett, waiting for him to look up from the toy broom he was casting Levioso on. But Imelda, quick-tempered as she was, grew impatient and grabbed him by the scruff of his robes and pulled him into a deep kiss, causing the boys to jeer and whoop loudly. When she pulled away, it was easy to make out the dark stain of her rouge on Everett’s lips, even from a distance. In a daze, Everett clutched his chest dramatically and pretended to faint.
“Am I dreaming?” he said loudly. “Or is this heaven?”
“Shut up,” muttered Imelda sternly, pushing him away before returning to your table with a faint pink tint on her ears. Nerida clapped patronizingly.
“Well, color me surprised,” she said, voice dripping with scorn. “I suppose Reyes CAN do anything after all.”
“I can swim too,” Imelda quickly shot back without restraint. You braced yourself for a fight as did the others until Samantha, hoping to defuse the situation, turned to you.
“I believe our new fifth year’s been awfully quiet,” she said with a sweet tone. “We didn’t mean to leave you out.”
“Oh, don’t worry about me,” you replied hastily. “You can leave me out of this one.”
“You don’t have to be shy,” said Adelaide softly. “I’d love to get to know more about you.”
“Indeed,” Grace chimed in. “After retrieving my family’s heirloom for me, I’d like to consider you a friend.”
“I return the sentiment, truly I do, but I’m not that interesting,” you rambled, trying to return to your parchment. You didn’t think divulging in sordid affairs was the best way to get to know someone.
Nerida’s eyes narrowed as she finally turned away from her stare down with Imelda. “Quite the contrary, there’s plenty interesting about you.” Her gaze bore into you uncomfortably. “You’ve beaten Constance and me at Crossed Wands before. Pretty good for a newcomer.”
“Beginner’s luck, I suppose,” you mumbled.
“It is no beginner’s luck,” Natty beamed with pride. “You still have some ways to go, but one can’t deny your talent.”
“Almost as good as Sallow, is what people are saying,” Nerida eyed you quizzically. “So now I wonder… truth or dare?”
A nervous sweat crawled down your back. You couldn’t say why, but for some reason, you suspected Nerida to ask a question about Sebastian if you picked truth. So, without hesitation, you picked-
“Dare.”
Nerida frowned. Not the choice she was hoping for, but she’d make do with it. “Let’s see, I dare you,” she turned to look once more, an impish smile on her face. “To give Garreth Weasley a love bite.”
Poppy and Samantha covered their mouths with scandalous gasps while Lenora tried and failed to suppress a titter. Constance’s eyes flicked between Nerida’s face and yours with bated breath.
“What’s a love bite?” Adelaide whispered to Grace, who shushed her.
Imelda clicked her tongue disapprovingly. “Roberts, you picked the dare last round. Don’t be stingy, let someone else have a turn.”
“Well, does anyone else have a better idea?” said Nerida. She was met with silence as each one was too stunned with suspense to speak. “It seems everyone is in favor.”
Natty gripped your arm. “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”
“She could always pick truth,” suggested Nerida. “But as Reyes said, truth’s for sissies.”
Imelda silently cursed her own tongue. She glanced at you worriedly, but your face was calm. The only giveaway that it was a façade was the foot you were nervously shaking against hers.
“What’s wrong?” asked Nerida. “Afraid to kiss your beau?”
Right, you had a secret to uphold. You stood up silently and made your way over to Garreth, praying he’d forgive you for this. He agreed to help you keep up appearances, but this was more than you asked of him. You’d make it up to him somehow, you consoled yourself as you approached him.
“Hello there,” he sensed your presence behind him immediately, looking up at you with an easygoing smile. You leaned in close to whisper what you’d been asked to do. Garreth stilled, his heart skipping a beat. The breath that brushed his ear was not helping in the slightest.
“Is it alright?” you asked timidly. “If it’s too much to ask, then-“
“Go on,” Garreth managed to respond with well-concealed difficulty. “I don’t mind in the slightest.”
You nodded, more so to steel yourself than anything. You’ve never given a love bite before, much less a kiss. You weren’t quite sure how to go about it or where to even place it. Garreth, sensing your trepidation, pulled back his collar to reveal the expanse of his neck and collarbones. With a deep breath, you placed your hand on the other side of his neck to hold him still as you sank your teeth unto his skin, finding it much softer than you imagined. Your lips enclosed the bite as you sucked deliciously; Garreth had to clench his fists to fight back the moan that threatened to escape him. Leander let out a low whistle while Arthur and Eric ogled silently.
“See, why couldn’t you lot dare Imelda to do the same!” Everett exclaimed jealously as you finally pulled away, running a finger over the red and purple mark beginning to bloom. The kiss heightened Garreth’s sensitivity to your touch, the feel of just one finger like a trail of fire on his skin. You thanked him quietly, making your way back to your seat, your face equally as red as Garreth’s which had flushed into a bright crimson. The girls all gaped at you in hushed amazement. Nerida was stunned.
“I didn’t believe you’d actually do it,” she said in disbelief. She had hoped you’d turn tail and choose truth instead, but you were bolder than she made you out to be.
“Yes well, whose turn is it now?” you said breathlessly, trying to change the subject. Surprisingly, you enjoyed the kiss despite your hesitance, and you were doing all you can to maintain your composure.
“Seeing as we’re doing dares now,” Grace spoke up, “Sallow’s here if Constance would like a try.”
You whipped your head to follow her glance. Sebastian was making his way down the hall with Ominis at his side, an unreadable expression on his face. Did he by chance see what you did to Garreth?
“It doesn’t matter,” you thought wistfully to yourself, turning back to the group.
“Go on Constance,” Poppy and Adelaide were now urging Constance to speak to Sebastian, Poppy being the more forceful one. “If these two can take a dare, so can you!”
Your momentary elation was smeared by a sudden streak of envy. What does Sebastian think of Constance? Would he return her feelings? The thought of Sebastian dating anyone was unpleasant, to say the least, but you had no claim on him. Nerida had joined the others now, urging Constance to walk up to Sebastian and finally confess her feelings to him. Just as she got up to brush off her robes, Imelda slyly gave her wand a slight wave under the table, causing a bottle of ink to spill all over Constance’s blue uniform.
“Oh no!” she cried helplessly, grabbing stray pieces of parchment to blot the ink.
“We can try a cleaning spell,” Samantha suggested, but Constance shook her head sadly.
“It’s anti-vanishing ink,” she bemoaned with tears in her eyes. “Oh, I can’t walk up to Sebastian like this!”
Samantha tried her best to calm Constance down as Nerida gathered their things. “This was fun, but we’ll take our leave now,” Nerida said, bidding everyone farewell. You watched the trio leave hurriedly for the nearest bathroom, presumably to wash off the stubborn ink.
The rest of the group decided to part ways but as you left, you took one last look to search for Garreth and Sebastian. The former had gone and disappeared while the latter was engrossed in his book. “Perhaps he didn’t notice after all,” you said to yourself hopefully. Unbeknownst to you, Sebastian couldn’t even make out the words of the pages, blinded by seething rage as he willed himself to calm down, the image of your lips on Garreth staining his mind even with his eyes closed shut. Ominis could only sit by helplessly. And Garreth had fled to the Gryffindor tower, the day’s excitement all too much for him to bear. The simple memory of your teeth biting down on his skin, your fingers cradling his neck gently, had caused his blood to flow in the most inappropriate places. He needed to take care of it privately or he’d lose his mind. You may have thought he had done you a favor today, but truly, you couldn't have made his day any better.
_______________________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, somewhere in the Ravenclaw Tower, three girls labored over a stained set of uniforms.
“I was really hoping to ask the new girl if she fancied Sallow,” Nerida told Constance and Samantha later on as she helped Constance scrub her skirt clean. “But it seems she prefers Weasley.”
“I’m so relieved,” Constance sighed. “I almost suspected something was going on between them.”
“Maybe now you can finally confess to Sebastian with a clear conscience,” Samantha suggested.
Constance nodded in eager agreement. "I wonder if he'd like me back."

Okay so after some good feedback from a few moots, here’s my new headcanon for Solomon’s case in Hogwarts Legacy-
After getting sacked from the Auror Office at the Ministry of Magic, Solomon Sallow relied on his family’s remaining savings to cover everyday expenses. Not exactly the best parental figure and role model to his niece and nephew Anne and Sebastian, it can’t be said he was active in looking for work either. The fact that his reputation was damaged from the fallout from losing his job did nothing to help. When the money ran out, Solomon had to turn to a less than reputable lender for financial support. His bad record with the Ministry also barred him from borrowing money through trustworthy institutions like Gringotts.
The ex-auror’s debts racked up at a rapid pace with no reliable source of income. He received many warning letters from the loan shark that went unaddressed as the situation got worse. The loan shark, which had ties with the same shady group Ravenclaw student Astoria Crickett was connected to, was fed up with Solomon. They hired Victor Rookwood to collect. He confronted the ex-auror at his home in Feldcroft during an assault on the village. Infuriated that Solomon didn’t have the money, Rookwood cursed Anne as leverage to make her uncle cough up the galleons. Before he apparated away, the dark wizard threatened that next time he showed up and Solomon didn’t have the money, he, Sebastian and Anne would be killed.
Around the time In the Shadow of the Relic would take place normally, Rookwood and his goons return to Feldcroft, they after Solomon for the money. Ominis, Anne, Sebastian and Danny (my MC) witness Solomon get killed by the debt collectors for not paying his dues. They seize and warp away with the relic Sebs was going to heal his sister with plus Slytherin’s spellbook, intent on pawning the loot away to make up for the money Solomon owed.
