Can there be an ethical way to exploit a woman for a womb and treat a baby like a commodity?
The global surrogacy industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom, raising ethical concerns across borders. As more couples turn to surrogacy as a path to parenthood, this assisted reproductive technology has evolved into a multi-billion dollar market.
According to recent research, the global surrogacy industry is projected to grow from $21.85 billion in 2024, to $196 billion by 2034. This explosive growth is primarily concentrated in Europe and North America, where surrogacy is legal and regulated.
However, the legal landscape of surrogacy remains a complex patchwork across nations, with some countries embracing it while others maintain strict prohibitions. This inconsistency in regulations has created gray areas.
Scientific research highlights the possibility of abuse arising from gaps in legal frameworks and disputes, whether surrogacy is legal or not. It points to unethical practices such as trafficking of women, coercion of both surrogates and prospective parents by agencies, lack of respect for bodily autonomy or informed consent, ‘sham’ procedures and multiple embryo exchanges.
Cross-Border Exploitation: A Dark Web of Surrogacy
Surrogacy-related abuse often happens in a region formed by three countries: Turkey, Georgia and Northern Cyprus.
While surrogacy remains illegal in Turkey, it’s perfectly legal in its northeastern neighbor Georgia and southern neighbor Northern Cyprus, creating a dangerous legal vacuum that enables exploitation.
The Hope for the Future Association, based in Tbilisi, Georgia, is one of the organizations reporting cases of abuse and illegal surrogacy in the country.
“Our organization has evidence of both Georgian and Turkish citizens being used as surrogate mothers, along with cases of children being transported across borders with falsified documents,” said Tamar Khachapuridze, the association’s director. “We’ve reported these to the prosecutor’s office. Despite a decade-long investigation by Georgian prosecutors, these cases remain collecting dust. It appears someone is working to keep these dark dealings under wraps.”

Khachapuridze cited a particularly alarming case involving a Turkish surrogate mother. After undergoing embryo transfer in Georgia, she was reportedly transported to Thailand three months before giving birth, where she delivered a baby intended for a single Chinese man.
This case directly violates Georgian law, which explicitly prohibits embryo transfer or any surrogacy procedures for women from foreign countries.
When we obtained the case number from Khachapuridze’s files and approached the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office with written questions about the existence and content of the investigation, our written inquiries and follow-up calls went unanswered.
Rusudan Nanava, a Tbilisi-based lawyer handling surrogacy cases, explained the wall of silence: “I doubt you’ll get any information from the prosecutor’s office. Criminal cases, especially those involving surrogacy, are treated with the highest level of confidentiality.”
Georgia’s Legislative Tug of War: Balancing Ethics and Economics
In a significant policy shift, the Georgian government is grappling with proposed legislation that could fundamentally reshape the country’s surrogacy landscape. The move comes amid growing concerns over human trafficking and exploitation in the industry.
“We’re seeing cases of law abuse, including human trafficking,” said independent member of parliament Tamar Kordzaia. “While the government pushes for change through surrogacy laws, I believe we could address these issues through other regulatory measures.”
The controversial bill, introduced in June 2023, would effectively end commercial surrogacy in Georgia, permitting only altruistic arrangements. This shift would bar foreign couples—who currently make up 95 percent of intended parents—from accessing Georgian surrogacy services, restricting the practice to Georgian citizens only.
However, Kordzaia remains skeptical about the bill’s future, which has yet to take effect.
“This is moving at a glacial pace, despite the government’s ability to fast-track legislation when it wants to,” she said. “The economic implications are severe—both for medical facilities and the women who rely on surrogacy income. I suspect the bill will ultimately be withdrawn.”
In a country where 11.5 percent of women aged 18-65 live below the absolute poverty line, surrogacy has become a lifeline for many Georgian women struggling to make ends meet. Their stories paint a stark picture of economic desperation intersecting with the global fertility market.
Take Teona, a 42-year-old teacher and domestic violence survivor, who turned to surrogacy twice a decade ago. “As a woman, I wanted to help another woman who couldn’t have children,” she said, her voice tinged with both pride and pragmatism. “Of course, there was financial motivation. My main goal was to buy my own apartment, and I did it—for my child’s future.”
Dr. Keti Gotsiridze, director of the Reproductive Health Center of the Chachava clinic, one of Georgia’s well-established health institutions, said according to the data research of her clinic, surrogacy practice contributes $300 million a year to health tourism. Gotsiridze said 90 percent of their clients are foreigners. Surrogate mothers are paid 25-30 thousand Euros; Chachava works with an average of 300-400 surrogate mothers a year.
For the time being, it seems that the new legislation to change the practice of surrogacy in Georgia has been shelved due to economic concerns. However, the question of how to prevent human trafficking, which has also emerged with the abuse of the existing law, remains unanswered.
Cross-Border Surrogacy Investigation Closes With No Charges Filed
A prosecutorial investigation has revealed an alleged surrogacy trafficking network spanning Turkey, Georgia and Northern Cyprus, highlighting the devastating human cost of unregulated fertility treatments.
The case began on Sept. 3, 2021, when Turkey’s Health Ministry received an anonymous tip about “F. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) Center,” a fertility clinic in Istanbul’s affluent Beşiktaş district. According to the whistleblower, the clinic was targeting vulnerable young women, including minors, from the working-class neighborhood of Ümraniye with promises of financial gain through surrogacy.
The scheme was elaborate: Women were provided with fertility drugs to use at home for durations ranging from two to 12 days. They were then allegedly trafficked to Georgia and Northern Cyprus using forged documents, with all expenses covered by the network. The fertility medications were reportedly sourced from pharmaceutical warehouses and distributed through a café in Üsküdar, serving as a front for the operation.
Despite the gravity of these allegations, the investigation faced significant hurdles. After a year-long probe, authorities could only identify one suspect, known as A.A., who allegedly recruited the women. The café implicated in the scheme closed its doors just one month before police surveillance began.
When we reached out to M.K., the lawyer who owned the café, he confirmed his ownership but denied any knowledge of the fertility drug distribution, claiming he was also a victim in the scheme.
Another crucial lead emerged regarding Dr. S.T., who allegedly treated the women at “F. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) Center” and later deleted their medical records. However, police terminated the investigation, citing lack of evidence and the doctor’s clean criminal record.
When reached for comment, Dr. S.T. denied all allegations, dismissing the claims made in the investigation as baseless.
The case took another turn when the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the case in January 2023. The Provincial Health Directorate appealed, arguing that “the investigation was inadequate” and “the material and moral elements of the crime have not been fully established.” Nevertheless, on May 31, 2023, the Istanbul 7th Criminal Court of Peace rejected the appeal without explanation.
The case remains closed, leaving crucial questions unanswered about the fate of these young Turkish women, the conditions they endured, and the clinics involved in Georgia and Northern Cyprus. The Ministry of Health has remained silent on queries about similar reported cases, raising concerns about the scale of this cross-border surrogacy trade.
A Cross-Border Underground Surrogacy Network
A police raid in Istanbul in 2019 exposed a sophisticated trafficking network spanning Turkey, Georgia and Northern Cyprus. The operation revealed a complex web involving a Northern Cypriot ringleader and two Moldovan accomplices who coordinated the trafficking of Turkish women for surrogacy purposes.
During the raid, police discovered large quantities of fertility drugs. According to detained suspects’ testimonies, these hormones were supplied by the Northern Cypriot kingpin and administered to potential surrogate mothers recruited from Turkey. The women were then trafficked to clinics in both Northern Cyprus and Georgia, with one prominent facility identified as “IVF Tours Georgia” in Tbilisi.
To verify whether this clinic continues to engage with Turkish women five years after the raid, we conducted an undercover investigation. Posing as potential surrogates from Turkey, we contacted “IVF Tours Georgia” via email. The response was swift and telling: Not only did they accept our inquiry, but they immediately began discussing financial arrangements and medical screenings. This exchange revealed a striking fact: Despite Georgian law restricting surrogacy to Georgian citizens, the clinic openly offered services to Turkish nationals, highlighting the persistent nature of this illegal cross-border trade.
Lack of Oversight Fuels Surrogacy Concerns in Northern Cyprus
In Northern Cyprus, a growing surrogacy industry operates within a complex web of legal ambiguity and insufficient oversight, despite having well-crafted regulations. Former health minister (2018-2019) and Republican Turkish Party MP Filiz Besim warns that human trafficking cases persist due to inadequate supervision.
“While we have meticulously drafted laws permitting surrogacy, the lack of oversight remains a critical issue,” Besim said. “Our unique position outside international law, due to our unrecognized status, has created vulnerabilities that are being extensively exploited. This has led to the emergence of illicit international networks involved in human, women, and child trafficking.”
Deputy Besim emphasizes that women—particularly from Caucasian countries—are being brought from abroad as surrogate mothers in violation of laws. He notes that due to insufficient oversight, questions remain about the agreements, facilitators, and conditions under which these women are transported.
Our anonymous field interviews and observations reveal serious concerns about surrogacy practices stemming from the country’s lack of oversight. A troubling gray area has emerged where low-income women face potential exploitation. Women may be pressured into surrogacy due to financial hardship, raising ethical concerns about the commodification of women’s bodies and children’s rights.
International organizations like U.N. Women have voiced similar concerns about surrogacy practices in regions like Northern Cyprus, citing these risks and inadequate oversight. They stress the importance of protecting surrogate mothers through proper safeguards: ensuring they are fully informed, free from coercion, and fairly compensated for the risks they undertake
Surrogacy became legal in Northern Cyprus in August 2016 under the Law Regulating Human Cell, Tissue, and Organ Transplantation Rules. A new, more robust bill was drafted in April 2023, though Parliament has yet to convene to discuss these changes.
Northern Cyprus has emerged as Europe’s leading destination for reproductive treatments. The industry’s prominence is evident in everyday encounters in the capital, Lefkoşa, where stories of successful surrogacy arrangements—including a recent case involving a European couple—are commonplace.
While official statistics remain undisclosed, artificial intelligence analysis estimates approximately 500 surrogacy arrangements occur annually in Northern Cyprus. According to LaingBuisson, a London-based healthcare market research firm, the country handles about 11 percent of all egg donation treatments in Europe.
Social Media’s Underground Surrogacy Market
Despite legal bans and restrictions, a thriving underground surrogacy market in Turkey continues to operate in plain sight. There are numerous advertisements openly seeking surrogate mothers on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
In one of these advertisements, we wrote to a woman who said she could be a surrogate mother, with a request to have a child. Ten years ago in Turkey, the woman said she had been a surrogate mother once and explained how the process would work and offered us two methods to help her conceive:
“The child could be from my egg and your husband’s sperm. Would you be okay with that after birth? We’d never need to know each other. We wouldn’t even need a transfer. We could handle it ourselves – inject your husband’s sperm directly into my uterus. Or, we could select healthy eggs and have your and your husband’s eggs transferred to me.”
Most alarmingly, she assured us that certain private clinics would perform these procedures clandestinely, promising there would be “no issues” with birth certificates—a clear indication of document fraud.
The desperation of infertile couples seeking parenthood through these illegal channels may be understandable, but the risks are severe. These back-alley procedures not only endanger the health of all parties involved but also expose them to serious legal consequences. The combination of medical risks and criminal liability creates a potential storm of challenges for vulnerable individuals.
The Delicate Balance: Finding a Legal Middle Ground
Is there a way to craft ideal legislation that prevents exploitation while acknowledging the deep human desire for parenthood? Attorney and professor Dr. Özlem Yenerer Çakmut believes the answer lies in nuanced regulation rather than absolute prohibition.
“We can’t simply ignore the profound yearning of those who dream of experiencing not just parenthood, but the entire journey—from pregnancy to birth,” Yenerer explained. “These are couples who want more than adoption; they want to be part of every moment, every milestone.”
“The challenge lies in striking a delicate balance between regulation and prohibition,” she continued. “A blanket ban isn’t the answer, especially in societies where having children carries immense social and cultural weight. While we can’t legitimize illegal practices, we can work toward meaningful legislation that protects all parties involved while acknowledging these deeply human desires.”
There is also a section of the world strongly opposed to surrogacy. At its forefront stands the Casablanca Declaration, a document signed by 100 experts from 75 countries in March 2023, calling for a universal ban on surrogacy practices.
Leading this charge is Olivia Maurel, herself born through surrogacy in 1991, who has emerged as one of the movement’s most compelling voices.
“Standing against surrogacy means advocating for its universal abolition,” Maurel declared with conviction born of personal experience. “This isn’t just about abstract principles—it’s about defending the fundamental rights of women and children, about protecting human dignity in its most basic form. Surrogacy, by its very nature, undermines these essential values.”
For some, surrogacy represents a last resort in their journey to parenthood. A 46-year-old woman living in Georgia, who chose to remain anonymous, shared the challenging aspects of this process. After having her uterus and ovaries removed due to health issues, she and her husband decided to pursue surrogacy six years ago.
The woman described maintaining close contact with the surrogate mother both before the transfer and throughout the pregnancy. “I monitored her doctor visits, tests and medications regularly. I ensured she maintained a healthy diet, and I was present during the birth. I was with my baby from the moment of delivery.”
Despite being a challenging and costly process, she pursued surrogacy to fulfill her dream of motherhood. “If surrogacy is the only path to becoming a mother, you must give it your all, learn to manage your emotions, and stay focused on your goal. The difficulties and pain are temporary; the love for a child is permanent,” she said.
E.U. Redefines Surrogacy Regulations
Recent legal scholarship challenges the traditional binary approach of outright bans versus complete legalization. Instead, experts advocate for a nuanced international framework that transcends cultural and moral absolutes while protecting fundamental human rights. This perspective emphasizes the critical need for comprehensive national legislation in countries where surrogacy exists, whether legal or not, to safeguard the rights of both women and children.
Amid this contentious landscape, the European Parliament Council took decisive action on Jan. 23, 2024, reaching a provisional agreement to classify exploitative surrogacy practices as human trafficking. The measure was formally adopted on May 27, 2024.
The new framework imposes strict penalties on those who exploit women through forced surrogacy or deceptive practices, while establishing comprehensive support systems for victims. E.U. member states must implement these protections into their national legislation within two years.

Imagine that it is May 2025. U.S. President Donald Trump has just finished bulldozing the entire U.S. interstate system, because Elon Musk decreed that highways are wasteful and the country should run on hyperloops. No hyperloops currently exist, and the entire nation requires the interstate system to function, but that is deemed irrelevant. For months prior, Deep Interstate tried desperately to draw attention to the range of public needs that roads fill, how critical highways are to national security, and how rash it would be to squander the decades of bipartisan work—and the billions of taxpayer dollars—that went into constructing them. But Deep Interstate has been labeled untrustworthy, existing only to protect its own interests and undermine the administration.
By July, hyperloop construction is facing years of delays. Construction supplies are stuck in warehouses while workers are consistently late or absent: The local roads have become too congested to allow the efficient passage of even critical materials or employees. To transport supplies long distances, beleaguered investors discover that they will need to build a giant system of high-speed roadways connecting localities.
Bulldozing the highways, it turns out, has catastrophically complicated hyperloop expansion—even though those highways had never been designed to support hyperloop construction, let alone optimize it. But hyperloop experts maintained that efficiency and innovation demanded their destruction.
If that hypothetical sounds far-fetched, consider this: One month ago, the Trump administration was gifted a U.S diplomatic infrastructure spanning 271 embassies, consulates, and missions, as well as a foreign assistance infrastructure reaching more than 170 countries through approximately $68 billion in foreign assistance funding in 2024 alone. The United States’ vast reach was no accident: Building it required half a century of bipartisan collaboration and hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars. Only one country enjoyed a larger footprint: China.
Despite that, through a breathtaking failure of imagination and an even greater failure of checks and balances, this administration has terminated U.S.-backed agreements across thousands of markets and dozens of sectors, showing no concern for immediate and catastrophic impacts, legality, constitutional authorities, the long-term destabilization of emerging markets, or even the safety of its own employees.
As of Feb. 25, anywhere from 5,800 to 14,000 U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) staff have been placed on leave or laid off. A claimed “waiver” program for USAID and State Department foreign assistance programs is non-operational in practice. Embassies, where most employees are local staff, have been ordered to make cuts. The country’s hard-won reputation as a reliable, trustworthy, and rule-abiding partner is teetering on the brink. It’s bulldozers all around.
Such destruction is a seismic, unforced error. We are at the advent of a new technological age of artificial intelligence, in which the United States must seize every opportunity to protect and expand its competitive advantage. Scale is the U.S. government’s untapped superpower.
By treating the country’s vast diplomatic presence and foreign assistance infrastructure as expendable “soft power,” the Trump administration misses two hard truths about protecting geopolitical power in the age of AI: first, that speed depends on scale; and second, that models require markets.
The United States’ untapped superpower in the AI race is not the so-called innovation economy, or an unregulated market. Those have been leveraged. Rather, it is the sheer scale of the U.S. government’s global presence, and how that could be used to turbocharge America’s global leadership in the AI race.
Moreover, the ability to build markets—not just individual AI models—will determine which nation’s technology dominates globally. Supporting the early and successful deployment of basic, useful AI systems across global markets will be key to protecting market entry opportunities for American AI technologies for decades to come.
The United States’ sturdy global presence provides a ready-made distribution network for AI innovation and adoption, particularly in critical sectors such as global health, food security, and climate resilience—areas where AI can drive immediate and transformative change.
Outside of better-known humanitarian and public health work, U.S. foreign assistance programs also help support anti-corruption initiatives, investigative reporting, STEM training, local entrepreneurship, free and fair elections, and rule of law—all of which underpin the political stability and due process that enhance opportunities for long-term market growth and diminish market entry risks for U.S. companies.
Finally, protecting robust U.S. diplomatic engagement at local levels optimizes for the country’s unusually large embassies: More staff on the ground means broader coverage and deeper insights than most foreign ministries can gather.
Broad reach also ensures that the United States’ scale is being used to benefit broader U.S. private sector interests. AI incumbents and Big Tech can hire local offices, lawyers, and lobbyists to support their expansion into new markets (and the new sources of data they offer for model training). Key benefits of the U.S. government’s scale accrue to “Little Tech.” The country’s start-ups and innovators are better equipped to balance the scales when taxpayer investments do the heavy lifting of building awareness of U.S. business, developing trust with local governments, and supporting broad private-public partnerships that facilitate rapid scaling.
While U.S. foreign assistance was not designed to support the expansion of these emerging technologies, it will be far faster to optimize for such expansion over this existing infrastructure. Financing structures, legal registrations, banking agreements, compliance protocols, training programs, public-private partnerships, growth strategies, and expert staff: These mechanics are core to foreign assistance implementation, and they could be adapted with relative speed to support AI deployment across markets. Notably, 11 of the United States’ top 15 export markets have been the recipients of U.S. foreign assistance funding to support their development.
A truly efficient scaling strategy for American AI would capitalize on intense recent efforts to modernize both USAID and the State Department; years of work laid important groundwork that should not be wasted. All of the country’s embassies now employ officials charged with cyber and digital policy in alignment with a new global foreign-affairs strategy expressly designed to reassert U.S. leadership in the digital age. USAID launched a new digital strategy in 2024 to achieve a similar transformation.
In addition, AI dominance will depend not just on market presence but also on compute power, semiconductor access, and cloud infrastructure. While technological expertise in those areas is mission critical to American AI expansion, so too is the technical expertise required to develop partnerships with governments and communities around the world. U.S. development agencies are ideally situated to house the private-public partnerships that could launch the country’s innovators—and not just its largest tech companies—into markets around the globe. Chinese President Xi Jinping understands that assignment. For more than a decade, the Chinese government has demonstrated how deeply it appreciates the competitive advantage that global presence confers in the digital age. Between 2013 and 2022, China invested $679 billion in infrastructure projects through its Belt and Road Initiative across nearly 150 countries. These investments have not only bolstered China’s global influence but also created dependencies with long-term strategic implications.
In particular, China’s Digital Silk Road initiative has invested billions in 5G, fiber-optic cables, and data centers across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Those investments, notably, have also created unsustainable debt in many recipient nations, giving China greater influence over local decisions.
As a result, many governments around the world are less than eager to lean on Chinese development support. But in a vacuum of U.S. offerings—and with limited domestic capacity to grow absent foreign support—they may see no alternative. Whether through announcing a multimillion dollar de-mining initiative in Cambodia or joining a global declaration at the recent AI Action Summit which the United States sat out, China is already demonstrating that it can pounce to fill the sinkholes that the Trump administration’s policies have created, even if it won’t fully bridge the global gap.
By 2030, AI infrastructure markets in Africa and Southeast Asia will be worth approximately $50 billion. Undermining America’s diplomacy and foreign assistance infrastructure kneecaps the deployment of U.S. AI innovation at the exact moment when the government’s scale could have been leveraged to turbocharge it. American investors and technology leaders should consider how much harder it will be to build markets where U.S. embassies increasingly lack influence, access, or insights.
Critically, as China fills the development hole that this administration has dug, the Chinese Communist Party will not only deepen its first mover advantage in AI deployment, but also be positioned to condition continued development assistance on nations’ refusing to engage with U.S. industry, possibly denying American businesses access to local manufacturing capabilities or even banning importation of American-made products or services.
Foreign officials can already see what technology leaders may be missing: The U.S. government is bulldozing its global infrastructure so quickly that it is leaving American industry with rubble rather than glide paths, much less a hyperloop.
This may be one reason that Vice President J.D. Vance’s speech at the mid-February AI Action Summit in Paris rang both hostile and hollow when he insisted that the Trump administration “will ensure that American AI technology continues to be the gold standard worldwide, and we are the partner of choice for other foreign countries and certainly businesses as they expand their own use of AI.” Actions speak louder than words, and while Trump could have leaned into the unique competitive advantage the U.S. government’s existing scale provided, his administration is instead now well down the path of converting that advantage into equally scaled risk.
Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio can still course-correct to rebuild some trust in U.S. promises and rule of law. Rubio needs to conduct a coherent, good faith, State Department-led review of foreign assistance investments in order to determine how best to align existing work with this administration’s foreign-policy goals, including the ones that Vance has enumerated. Taking a more deliberative approach in the short term will protect the infrastructure needed to support future innovation at speed and scale. Equally importantly, it will reassure the world that U.S. agreements—be they public or private—can still be trusted.
Absent such proof, partnering with Xi to build out global AI systems will make abundant sense to many governments, including those that house lucrative markets. China’s diplomatic reach and development footprint are not accidental; they are reflective of a government that understands the value of investing in infrastructure and then capturing the market efficiencies that can be gained by building on top of it.
Thanks to the past month, Beijing is better positioned than ever to match that scale with speed. Perhaps it will even invest in new models akin to hyperloops and make progress there as well. The geopolitical AI race will be won by those who had the wisdom to protect their highways and turn them all into express lanes.

the wild robot; hard drives and heartstrings
since its early 1900s inception, animation in film has been touted as a medium designed and marketed for children. while the sentiment may seem true to the average moviegoer after the inescapable success of movies like ‘minions: the rise of gru’ & ‘the super smash bros. Movie’– it couldn’t be further from the truth. yes, dreamworks’ catalogue and history with filmmaking play a significant role in this perception from general audiences (see: boss baby, madagascar). however, this is not to say that they cannot make warm and genuine stories that resonate with viewers of all ages and demographics (see: kung fu panda, how to train your dragon).
2024’s ‘the wild robot’ is undeniably an instant classic and genuine feat in animated storytelling– arguably, dreamworks’ strongest effort since the original ‘how to train your dragon’ in 2010, which was also directed & written by chris sanders.
the plot, inspired by its literary source material and namesake, ‘the wild robot,’ immediately feels welcoming in its simplicity. it follows roz, a robot that finds herself shipwrecked on an uninhabited island with no connection to the human world she was made to assist. despite initially facing hostility from the island's animal inhabitants, roz integrates into the ecosystem, raising an orphaned gosling with the unlikely help of a sly fox named fink.
what stuck with me while watching this movie and what gives it the breathing room to separate itself from the other animated films released in recent memory is the maturity in its approach to jokes and dialogue. slapstick humour has long been a signature trait of a dreamworks’ film and unlike the studio’s past releases, ‘the wild robot’ has a more nuanced take with its joke telling. this style of comedy is almost reminiscent of the early seasons of ‘the simpsons’. the set-ups are driven by the way characters interact with one another and their environment before leading into a clever punchline that isn’t completely in your face. what makes these jokes even better is that they could have very easily been translated into a slapstick moment but were chosen not to, which indicates a clear conscience and desire to produce a mature body of work. a great example of this is roz’s skunk impersonation, which is initially introduced as a standard feature of her ‘instant mimicry’ programming but is then later reintroduced as a fun defence/attack mechanism for the final act. if we were to compare this to another chris sanders movie, ‘the croods’, this gimmick would have played out as a one-off gag where the grandma tries to spite the dad with no relevance to the plot or characters involved.
the maturity of this film is not only focused on its humour. it is also characterised as such in the way it explores themes of otherness, life & death, and depicts the dichotomy between technological advancement and nature.
otherness is represented in the 3 main characters: roz, fink, and brightbill. for roz, it manifests in the way she is perceived as a monster by the animals of the island and their unwillingness to accept her as one of their own. her desire to prove herself worthy of the animals’ acceptance is a shared trait with brightbill, the orphaned gosling roz cares for and nurtures. being a runt he naturally has a slower course of growth and a smaller rate of survival, his development is only further stunted by the fact that he grew up without an actual goose to teach him the ways of his species. and to the other geese on the island, he is perceived as a weirdo and of another species entirely, undeserving of migration. fink, on the other hand, is implied to be the only fox on the island and therefore has no community to fall back on but himself. his cunning nature puts him at odds with most creatures on the island and unlike the aforementioned two, he does not believe he has anybody to prove anything to. this acts as a driving force for his character arc in the latter half of the story and is excellently portrayed by his actions.
life & death in animated media is an underrepresented trope due to the stereotyped demographics attached to these projects. what this film does so brilliantly is how it opts not to sugarcoat these themes, and instead tastefully addresses them. as an audience this is first introduced in the death of a mother goose and the loss of all but one of the eggs in her nest. we may not have been directly informed that the bird did die, but roz’s actions in this scene deliver the seriousness of the situation gracefully. later in the movie, the inhabitants of the island go into hibernation, as does roz to conserve the little power she has left. fink, in his loneliness, is unable to fall asleep and when a terrible blizzard sweeps through he wakes roz up to save the animals from their deep sleep. the circle of life is once again acknowledged in this scene in a way that is understood simply– not all animals could be saved like when fink selflessly attempts to dig into a burrow only to discover it was too late for whichever creature was sleeping. handling death is an integral aspect of all people's lives, and seeing this film handle the topic without trivialising it for older audiences or making it seem traumatising for the children in the theatres is charming to witness.
‘the wild robot’ joins films like ‘avatar’ and ‘wall-e’ as cautionary tales for the possible side effects of how quickly humanity is advancing with technology– an increasingly relevant discussion today with the uptick in artificial intelligence and automation of our daily lives. we are only shown snippets of human life in this movie and the way humans are depicted is quite terrifying. living in bubbles that are entirely managed and run by robots designed to complete human tasks is a troublesome reality that attempting to give humans more autonomy only strips them of that. by the point in time this film is set in, humans have become so dependent on the safety their robots and bubbles promise them that a flock of migrating geese inside their dome sets off lockdowns and warrior bots designed to kill at the mere thought of bacteria. there are no positive side effects to segregating humanity from the planet's wonders.
visually, the film is stunning. every frame meticulously crafted to look like a moving painting. the settings burst with life with lush foliage and intricately designed flowers that all have unique designs and abnormalities. the hue vibrancy in the foreground effortlessly distinguishes characters from their surroundings, creating depth and visual harmony. all of these factors in tandem work to develop a sense of wonder for both roz, and the viewers as we join her in discovering this brand new world. at times, i found myself pausing the film just to marvel at its beauty. the decision pursue this route rather than traditional 3d animation was deliberate and thought-through enhancing the audience's experience. like its literary source, the visuals are deceptively modest despite holding more complex emotional value– a reflection of the filmmakers’ intention to preserve the essence of both mediums.
the final piece to the puzzle that brings this movie to life is the stellar voice acting provided by the cast. each voice matches the character, their motives, and their design so perfectly that it would be an insult to not give them their dues. lupita nyong’o’s care for roz delivers humanity and emotion to a character that was not designed to feel those things– an immediate stand out. the most surprising member of the cast was by far kit connor and his perfectly animated rendition of brightbill. connor’s tone for the gosling evokes the perfect amount of anxiety, confidence, and blissfulness that his character presents at all times, he has a promising career in voice acting ahead of him should he pursue it. pedro pascal approaches his role as fink with the same charisma he does with all his roles and is delightful to see. the fox’s transition from selfish to selfless throughout the movie is greatly assisted and felt in the way his tone moves from soft and mischievous to one that is warm. the star-studded cast is without fault from beginning to end and makes every joke funnier, and every exchange more impactful.
‘the wild robot’ is a testament to the endless creativity of animation. the adoption of watercolour aestheticism to deliver themes of otherness, found family, and the cautionary tales of humanity’s advancement with technology brings life to topics that are otherwise not enjoyed in a lighthearted context. within this 102-minute package is a story that audiences of all ages are able to resonate with and look back on fondly.

MDA20009 DIGITAL COMMUNITIES Tumblr Blog 3, Week 9: Crowdsourcing
Here is some music to hear while reading today's blog since it sets the mood and also relates to the topic I be doing.
youtube
"The Making of OMORI: A Crowdfunding Tale"
Imagine this: An idea that's been residing rent-free in someone's imagination finally has the chance to come true. Introduction:
Crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter have changed the creative industries by providing individuals and small teams with the resources they need to realize their ambitious ideas. These platforms enable indie game developers to transform their fantasies into playable reality. OMORI is one such fantasy that has come true. OMORI began as a Kickstarter project in 2014, with a goal, a little universe of imagination, and a fan base willing to contribute monetarily. It is now an international sensation, demonstrating the potential of fan-supported game creation.
The Power of Crowdfunding:
Kickstarter powers its backers and creators. Backers here provide funding for the innovative project ideas that creators submit (Moreau 2024). Using text, video, and images, creators create a page to showcase the specifics of their projects and prototypes. Project managers establish a budget and a due date (Moreau 2024). The authors also designate different prize tiers for backers who commit particular sums. The award increases with the number of pledges made by backers (Moreau 2024). The creator can develop and produce their vision if the project has received sufficient funding from backers. Backers may have to wait months to see the final product, depending on how complicated the project is.
Video game developers can profit greatly from crowdfunding in several ways. Accessing crowdfunding platforms is comparatively simple for independent and small business owners because they are web-based (Cha 2017). Crowdfunding thus broadens the diversity of ownership and content. Additionally, crowdsourcing enables publishers and creators of video games to compile player comments on a project, allowing them to provide a better product. Even before a video game is made available to the public, crowdfunding can help develop devoted fan bases and brand exposure. Crowdfunding could therefore assist video game makers in cutting back on marketing expenses and it is essential for small and independent video game makers because of these advantages. On Kickstarter, no product category raises more money than games (Cha 2017). Remarkably, compared to design, film and video, and technology crowdfunding efforts, video game ideas have much lower success rates.

OMORI is an indie RPG that took nearly six years to release, and fans say it was worth every minute. OMOCAT's creepy, nostalgic game, funded by a phenomenally successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014, follows Sunny, a boy who has withdrawn himself for years following a horrific encounter. Sunny, however, has a one-of-a-kind escape: he turns into OMORI in a vibrant dream world to cope and escape from his harsh reality. The dream world is colorful and gorgeous, with wacky opponents, talking mailboxes, and fun objects hidden inside watermelons. However, beneath the adorable imagery and classic pixel visuals comes a horror narrative that emerges through jump scares and an increasing sense of dread. Another standout feature of OMORI is its battle system, which influences bouts with emotions such as Happy, Sad, and Angry. Mastering these emotions, each with strengths and limitations, is essential, as is teamwork: OMORI and his pals may perform powerful moves by helping one another in battle which is important so that you don’t die and have the game over flashing on your face.
The game explores contemporary themes such as loneliness, mental health, and isolation. Sunny is so afraid of the outside world that he has not left his residence in years. He is mute and distant, living in a dream world where he feels safe and powerful. This notion is expressed in White Space, which is the first space the player encounters. Both the narrative and the gameplay are monotonous and simplistic. In the game, a character describes the environment as "an emptiness, a home without warmth." A place to survive, but not to live" (OMORI). In terms of landscape, White Space lacks colour and consists of only one sparsely decorated room (Younis & Fedtke 2023). White Space delivers a vacuous, risk-free kind of escapism through its persistent minimalism in the auditory and visual landscapes. Its basic and hollow character allows Omori to remain in an atmosphere free of triggers and memories from his trauma, giving a type of escapism based mainly on monotony.

Stretch Goals and Community Support:
OMORI's Kickstarter campaign was a huge success, with multiple stretch goals that increased the game's content and accessibility. These aims contributed significant value to the game's story, gameplay, and worldwide reach. Highlights include:
$30,000: Expanded intro and additional cutscenes with new animated sequences similar to those in the game trailer, enhancing the storytelling and visual experience. (Goal reached)
$50,000: A Mac version of OMORI was added, so backers pledging $15 or more receive both the PC and Mac versions, essentially getting two copies. (Goal reached)
$65,000: Mini-games added to arcade machines within the game world, starting with a machine at GINO’s Diner. Additional hidden arcade machines will be placed throughout the game, each featuring unique retro mini-games. (Goal reached)
$80,000: More side-quests and NPC interactions were added to create a deeply immersive experience. This includes new daily quests, several mini-bosses, and extended questlines with optional alternate endings, giving players more to explore and connect with. (Goal reached)
$100,000: Japanese localization to make OMORI accessible for Japanese-speaking fans, a gesture of gratitude for the strong support from Japan. (Goal reached)
$125,000: An official OMORI art book and walkthrough revealing the game’s secrets, concept art, and development insights are available for an additional $35. All backers pledging $55 or more also get a PDF version of the walkthrough, along with the game, wallpaper, OST, and pin set. (Goal reached)
Conclusion:
OMORI's journey from a Kickstarter project to an acclaimed indie RPG exemplifies the potential of crowdfunding in video game production. Crowdfunding levels the playing field and diversifies the types of games available in the market by offering a venue for independent developers to raise funds, communicate with fans, and receive feedback. Kickstarter enabled OMORI to create a story of emotional resilience and connection that has struck a deep chord with gamers worldwide. The OMORI campaign demonstrates how, with the help of a devoted community, a creator's idea can thrive in an industry controlled by larger studios. Crowdfunding brings ideas to life and develops communities around these ideas, creating powerful, transforming venues in which both creators and players actively participate.
Well that's all for me hope you all have a good read and here is a link for those who want to see the full story of Omori but be warn since it has some trigger warnings with heavy topics like self harm, depression and suicide

China offered its Y-20 transport plane to Nigeria
The air transport plane was placed on the international market in November, when it was shown to the head of Nigeria's defense.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/13/2024 - 19:00 in Military
China is trying to sell its Y-20 Kunpeng transport plane to foreign buyers, with its manufacturer expanding production capacity in preparation, according to media reports.
The strategic military transport aircraft was placed on the international market in November, when the Y-20BE model was shown to Nigeria's Defense Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar in Beijing, the military magazine Ordnance Industry Science Technology reported last week.
The heavy transport plane, nicknamed the 'chubby girl' (chubby girl) for its large fuselage, is comparable to the Soviet Ilyushin Il-76 and the American Boeing C-17.
According to the report, it will be an opportunity for China to “establish deeper strategic relations and cooperation with countries as soon as they have the Y-20”.
Although Nigeria currently depends on the C-130 Hercules as its main tactical air transport aircraft, military experts say the Y-20E would provide the country with genuine strategic air transport capabilities.

The aircraft manufacturer, XAIC, operates assembly lines for mass production, according to the Chinese state broadcaster.
Its manufacturer, the state-owned Xian Aircraft Industrial Corporation (XAIC), has been operating assembly lines for mass production to increase efficiency and expand capacity, the state broadcaster CCTV reported in November.
Instead of mounting the aircraft on a fixed workstation, its parts are moved along a "pulse line" as the work steps are completed - similar to the way cars are produced. These assembly lines are used to build some of the most advanced aircraft in the world, including the Lockheed Martin F-35 and the Boeing 787.
More than 90 percent of the parts of the Y-20 are manufactured by a digitized system, according to the CCTV report, which showed images from the XAIC factory of robotic arms, remotely controlled maneuvers and laser-assisted high-precision assembly work.
The broadcaster's report said that the production capacity of the plant could meet the demand of both the Chinese air force and international customers.
"The production speed of the Y-20 is the fastest in the world in this type," he said.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has received almost 100 planes so far, half of them in the last two years.
The plane, which is 47 meters long and 50 meters wide, has become the flagship of the People's Liberation Army since it entered service in 2016. It can transport up to 66 tons.
XAIC has delivered almost 100 planes to the PLA Air Force so far - about half of them in the last two years. It also changed from Russian-made Soloviev D-30KP-2 engines to the most powerful Chinese-made Shenyang WS-20 turbofan engines.
Variants were also developed, the Y-20U tank plane and the Y-20AEW airborne alert and early control aircraft.
