Telling a story takes guts.
Forensic photographer Sören Heinrich can’t ignore the nausea bubbling in his throat when documenting someone's darkest day. He loses sleep over the fates he captures but is drawn to the purpose vested in his grisly role. When blood-slicked prints become Sören's next subject, he finds a message that blurs the line between his personal and professional life.
"This is where I’ve been. Don’t follow."
Unable to fathom his long-lost brother’s crimson handwriting, Sören descends into the criminal underworld for answers. The young boar's inner demons guide him toward a morbid self-reckoning.
Direktion 2 has their work cut out for them.
Crime is on the rise in post-reunification Berlin. Among the cases, the Polizeidirektorate in the city's westernmost boroughs is baffled by freak murders at the hands of denizens without motive.
In the shadow of the Berlin Wall, the crime wave takes a supernatural twist behind the lock of a post-Soviet puzzle.
Camera flashes at the crime scenes reveal gruesome secrets stirring in the shadows.
Unravel the conspiracy in #LONG STORY SHORT.
#The Filing Cabinet -- scan the profiles of those in the know. #Bloodstained Polaroids -- view the images of lives gone astray. #Evidence Board -- learn the details of secrets best kept. #Mystery Signals -- behold the lore of the mind melt. Face the music in the official Long Story Short playlist!
Everyone gathers toward the Abschnitt.
There are several Polizei Berlin stations like the Abschnitt, but everyone tied to this supernatural symphony ends up near this Spandau station particularly.
Sören Heinrich -- ( boar | tag | bio ) The black sheep of the Abschnitt. Sören’s abrasive nature keeps his co-workers at bay, a division widened by their western ideals clashing with his East German upbringing. He distances himself from the station through tight focus on his job, always the first to arrive at a crime scene. Don Jae Hale -- ( elk | tag | bio ) The silver-tongued Kriminalhauptkommissar of the Abschnitt. Hale is quick to dismiss the killings up until his leadership comes under siege by the paranoid public. Umeya Romanova -- ( fox | tag | bio ) The Bundeskriminalamt detective sent to assist with the Abschnitt’s mounting cases. Rumor says Umeya is there for more than the mystery, but her motives veiled by a callous attitude. Marieke Reiss -- ( rabbit | tag | bio ) The star psychology student barely escaped a killing. Now a key witness, Marieke can’t rest easy knowing she could be the next victim, driving her to take matters into her own hands. Reinhardt Müller -- ( donkey | tag | bio ) The Abschnitt’s disgraced ace detective, worn down and living in the grimy corners of Berlin. When crime spikes, Reinhardt tries to relive his “glory days" of detective work. Ukko Heinrich -- ( boar | tag | bio ) The crime lord defends his territory with brutal but firm methods. He's sworn to his found family, the country's political rift making him protective to a fault. Vorwitz Albrecht -- ( bat | tag | bio ) A gardener with good banners but bad morals. Vorwitz's unsavory career choices put him in the Abschnitt, but he finds a way out with Sören.
Entropy knows no bounds.
Stop, look and listen: stories are everywhere. Behold my settings.
Face more madness in #TALES GONE STALE.
LAID TO WASTE -- an abomination stirs in the bayou, its secrets poisoning a township. THE WASTED LIVES -- a group of galactic fugitives embark on a never-ending getaway on a runaway cruiser. (Links need an update. Stay tuned.)
The mind behind the melancholy.
ACHTUNG! This blog is 18+ for gore and suggestive content!
You can call me Dissy (she/her). I'm a writer with stories and ideas always bouncing inside my head, especially this one. Feel free to ask me about myself, my writing, my characters, or anything else. I promise you I can bark up a tree for hours.
I also do Polaroid photography: check out @hogrot for my shots!
I also encourage comments, critique, etc. about this setting. I want to pace myself while writing this, therefore I have all the time I need to refine this where I can. I don't expect this story to come out for a while anyway, especially as I run it through critiques. Hell, this pet project wouldn't have come into fruition thanks to the feedback of some incredible friends.
Shoutout to PYRY for doing character design and art for this setting, as well as giving his ideas and characters for the Heinrich plotline. Go check out his killer art. This story wouldn't exist without him.
Another shoutout to @tsanapi, an incredible artist who drew the art pictured above. Her sense of style is so keen.
And a final thanks to you, the reader, for tuning into the mind melt. This signals wouldn't have picked up without you.

URGENT Call For Mutual Aid - HOUSE zaagaasige NOW
A friend of mine is in urgent need of housing. She is the coolest person I know. such a huge inspiration, guide, and well of knowledge for me, and life for her has been difficult and more than anything I want to see that remedied. I deeply admire them and would love to see them be able to acquire safe housing once and for all. Please please please consider donating. If you can't donate please reblog and share the link.
https://gofund.me/01f5aaef
GoFundMe description:
Artist, activist, land-defender and water-protector needs stable housing immediately! Salvation Army shelters have proved to be unsafe for Trans and Indigenous folks, and tenting in Thunder Bay is not a survivable option.
Among her notable actions, zaagaasige had stood strong for the water and land on Wet'suwet'en territory. They faced police brutality while fighting against the expansion of the TMX project.
They're an acclaimed artist in what can be described as an anarcho-woodland style. They're a de-colonizing philosopher, educator and pundit. They are a parent needing to reconnect with family. They're a hilarious, outspoken sh!t disturber in the best ways. They are heartbroken, wounded, and they need care.
Earlier last spring, promises of housing and work lured her out west. Those promises never materialized, and she began living rough in the downtown east side of Vancouver. Her experiences on the DTES left zaagaasige traumatized, and forced her to return to Thunder Bay. She needs assistance regaining her ID, finding safe, permanent housing, peace of mind, medicines, paint and canvas, clothing, and a hundred other material and clerical things you and I take for granted every day.
zaagaasige can make a decent living creating, but they first must receive help building a solid foundation after losing almost everything. This is an easily attainable goal, and she deserves so much more for her work.

The 9th January 2000 saw the death of the historical novelist Nigel Tranter.
Tranter was the most prolific Scottish writer of all time, writing mainly factual and fictional books related to Scottish history, if you haven't read any of his work I recommend you do, the attention to detail takes nothing away from enjoyable stories. In my opinion the only other Scottish writer to come close to the volume and quality of work in this field is Sir Walter Scott.
His grandfathers were church ministers, but a great-grandfather invented the Tranter pistol. He was descended also from James Watt, inventor of the steam engine. He himself wanted to become a restoring architect, but the early death of his father forced him to stop studying. Instead he trained as an accountant and worked in the Scottish National Insurance Company. He served in the Royal Artillery during World War II.
Tranter went to George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, which may have inspired his love of castles. His earliest writing on these was at the age of 13. As a boy he spent hours cycling to castles and mansions, and drawing them in meticulous detail, before going on to write about them in his first published book, The Fortalices and Early Mansions of Southern Scotland, 1400-1650, at the age of 22. This was followed by the five volumes of The Fortified House in Scotland. In later life he loved to take visitors out to castles and assisted many castle restoration projects in Scotland such as Fa’side.
He married May Jean Campbell Grieve in Athelstaneford Church in July 1933 and they had two children. He and May worked together on The Queen’s Scotland series, giving a short history of parishes in four Scottish regions until her death in 1979, when the project stopped.
Their son Philip was a climber, who sadly died in a car crash in 1966 on his way home from an expedition in the Dolomites. Tranter wrote No Tigers in the Hindu Kush from Philip’s notes.
Tranter saw himself primarily as a storyteller rather than a historian, and his first novel, Trespass, was published in 1937. Although criticised by some academic historians for writing fiction, he developed a huge new audience, who loved his tales of Scottish historical events and people. He wrote his fiction with increasing knowledge of Scottish history, introducing the subject to millions of people worldwide. From 1947 he decided he could earn a living by writing, and produced several novels for children, as well as adults. The Bruce Trilogy sold over 1 million copies and he had fan clubs in many countries. He also wrote Westerns, using the pen name Nye Tredgold.
Nigel Tranter received many honours and awards during his life, and was also actively involved in several organisations, including the St Andrews Society of East Lothian, Scottish PEN, Athelstaneford Flag Fund and the Saltire Society. He believed Scots should ‘be responsible for our own decisions’, and as chairman of the East Lothian Liberal Association for 15 years, he was part of the Scottish Convention, a cross-party pressure group set up to push for devolution. ‘We Scots are different, not better, but long live the difference’.
He continued to write into his 90s, starting each day with a walk across the wooden bridge at Aberlady Bay which he called ‘The Footbridge to Enchantment’. He was a familiar sight walking on the coast, stopping to jot down neat notes for his books on cards or even shells picked up from the beach. Some of these can be seen in the Tranter Museum, which is currently in Athelstaneford Parish Church. His last novel was Envoy Extraordinary. On his death thousands mourned and many friends and residents in the county remember him with great fondness.
Tranter and his family are buried in Aberlady Churchyard. There is a memorial cairn to him at the carpark near the footbridge which leads over to the nature reserve at Aberlady. The Scottish Castles Association have an annual Nigel Tranter Memorial Award in his memory.
There is a lot more on Nigel Tranter at the following link [http://cunninghamh.tripod.com/2001/index.htm](http://cunninghamh.tripod.com/2001/index.htm)

KINSHIP 1
Time: D-Day + 68 hours
Location: KINSHIP Forward Operating Base
Forces On Station: CFRI, Silver Wing
Forces En Route: Barghest Company (ETA 4h)
Objective: Set up initial defenses and prepare for enemy attack.
After-Action Report:
SWMC Alpha Lance, with SWMC Bravo Lance as support, conducted a sabotage action against the bridge southeast of Kinship FOB, in an attempt to slow the enemy advance. The action was a success, and the bridge was collapsed on the far end. However in the ensuing firefight, SWA3 was damaged beyond repair and the pilot was forced to eject. Following a short engagement by the rest of the lance, the pilot was recovered. Both lances then retreated to join up with main forces.
All Unassigned Forces on site at Kinship FOB finalized a defensive trench system surrounding the FOB. The system consists of a continuous shallow infantry trench on the South and West sides of the base. The outer edge is reinforced with sandbags, and there are deeper sections dug in anticipation of entrenching CAMG armor returning to base. Additionally, a fallback trenchline built in the same pattern as the primary protects and supports the most defensible location at the facility- the central courtyard, sheltered on three sides by the structure itself and with service entry points to enable the movement of personnel and supplies through the building.
CFRI Logistics elements set up a number of field Repair Bay stations inside the southeast vehicle entry points to the primary structure. On completion, the Portable Command Module was installed behind the fallback trenchline in front of the main complex, as notated on-map. Delivery of ammunition and medical supplies via DropShip concluded, with available materiel stored in shipping containers east of the main encampment. Those available support personnel who volunteered were issued infantry small arms and equipment procured from allied elements and moved to occupy the fallback trenchline. Officers on the ground noted that this location could be supported by the -MOD series IndustrialMechs assisting in the Repair Bays as a last-ditch effort. Currently, logistics personnel are occupied coordinating the storage of a shipment of Clan-spec Class-10 Rotary Autocannon ammunition requisitioned for advance delivery by Barghest Company.
Silver Wing Comms Log:
SWMC FR: Can someone go ask the captain if these orders are serious?
SWMC Holk: What's the problem, Gemi? Not cut out for some manual labor?
SWMC FR: You can actually fuck off, Rey, lazing about in orbit while we risk our lives.
SWMC Holk: Ok, just got word from the Captain that yes, you have to do the thing he told you to do.
SWMC FR: I'm saving one of these sandbags to dump onto your bunk.
SWMC Holk: Hey, hey, come on now. Let's not be rash!

[cisfemale, she/her] Welcome to Aurora Bay, [IRIS ALDERIDGE]! I couldn’t help but notice you look an awful lot like [ADELAIDE KANE]. You must be the [THIRTY-THREE] year old [OWNER OF FLORA AND FAUNA]. Word is you’re [HEADSTRONG] but can also be a bit [RESENTFUL] and your favorite song is [MY BOY ONLY BREAKS HIS FAVORITE TOYS - TAYLOR SWIFT]. I also heard you’ll be staying in [CRYSTAL COVE CONDOS]. I’m sure you’ll love it!
tw: teen pregnancy, tw: abortion mention (doesn't happen)
@aurorabayaesthetic
Iris' life, in her opinion, is always summed up in two segments: before and after. After was pretty good. After everything, she went to fashion school, got her degree, she moved to New York and worked her way up from assisting in fashion shows and dressing shoddy off off off Broadway shows, to being highlighted during Fashion Week. In the After, she had a swanky apartment on the Upper East Side that overlooked Central Park. In the After, Iris Aldridge was considered one of the best up and coming designers with her own little shop after spending years just doing little pop ups, noted for her designs that mixed contemporary with the classics, blending what was great with what will be. All in all, her life was one to be envied.
The Iris of Before however, was a different girl indeed.
Born to Ava Wells and Ian Alderidge, she grew up in a modest mansion on Aurora Bay Drive with the ocean as her backyard. Her mother owned a quaint little flower shop in town while her father was a banker. From childhood, Iris' life was highlighted by the best. She had the best toys, the best tutors, and, of course, the best clothes. She had friends whom she loved, grew up by the beach, and as she was just 16 in high school, she met who she thought was going to be the absolute love of her life. Arkin O'Connell was nothing like she'd ever experienced and he entered into her life like a wrecking ball. He didn't have money, he had a reputation, and Iris fell so head over heels for him that she could hardly think straight.
This was, of course, just not acceptable by her parents. And Iris being a teenager and in live, just didn't care.
She and Arkin made whispered promises to always love each other, to run away together. They'd make their own life away from Aurora Bay and their families and they'd be happy together forever.
So when things started to unravel, Iris tried not to let it rattle her. The whispers of him cheating on her, that he was using her for money, it all rang in her ears but she tried desperately to ignore it as she and Arkin agreed to just leave. So one day when she got a letter from him, unceremoniously breaking up with her because she was too much for him and he was tired of feeling like he was second class to her, it absolutely destroyed her. She loved him, was ready to spend her entire life with him. She wanted to marry him.... And yet..
He was gone, left without her, before she even really knew what happened. And in the weeks after as she tried to pick up her shattered pieces, more unraveled: she was pregnant.
Her mother urged her to think of her options, offering to drive her to a clinic even and just be done with it, and while Iris did actually consider it, she knew she couldn't go through with it. And so she finished her senior year and then it was agreed that Iris would go live with an aunt up north in Sonoma to ride out her pregnancy, away from the public eye. About eight months later her daughter, whom she named Olivia, was born. She was beautiful and perfect and Iris loved her, but...she was still just a kid herself, and without Arkin around (or even knowing), Iris didn't want to do it alone. So she found a nice couple to adopt her baby and forced herself to say goodbye.
And then came the After. After she met Arkin O'Connell and had him rip her heart to shreds. After getting pregnant and having her baby. After putting her daughter up for adoption, never to see or hear from her again. Iris couldn't stand the shadows and the whispers that lurked in Aurora Bay, and she just needed to get away from California altogether, so when it came time for school, Iris applied all over the East Coast and got into FIT. She moved before her nineteenth birthday and hasn't been back since.
Until now anyways.
Now, Iris is 33 (her daughter, somewhere out there, is 16) and she owns her own boutique shop in Manhattan. Or did. Because over the summer her mother passed away from a sudden heart attack, and in her will, Ava left Iris the deed to her beloved flower shop in back home in California. Iris seriously considered selling it, not wanting to come back, but...it was practically her mother's dying wish. So, reluctantly, Iris shuttered her brick and mortar shop, sold her highrise apartment, and is back in Aurora Bay after more than a decade, unaware that the ghosts of her past, one in particular, are waiting in the wings.

Great Kantō earthquake (1923) and the Massacres
The Great Kantō earthquake struck the Kantō Plain on the main Japanese island of Honshū at 11:58:44 JST (02:58:44 UTC) on Saturday, September 1, 1923. Varied accounts indicate the duration of the earthquake was between four and ten minutes. Extensive firestorms and even a fire whirl added to the death toll. The Kantō Massacre began on the day of the earthquake.  The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale with its focus deep beneath Izu Ōshima Island in Sagami Bay. Estimated casualties totalled about 142,800 deaths, including about 40,000 who went missing and were presumed dead.
Because the earthquake struck when people were cooking meals, many were killed as a result of large fires that broke out. Fires started immediately after the earthquake. Some fires developed into firestorms that swept across cities. Many people died when their feet became stuck on melting tarmac. The single greatest loss of life was caused by a fire whirl that engulfed the Rikugun Honjo Hifukusho in downtown Tokyo, where about 38,000 people were incinerated after taking shelter there after the earthquake. The earthquake broke water mains all over the city, and putting out the fires took nearly two full days until late in the morning of September 3.
A strong typhoon centered off the coast of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture brought high winds to Tokyo Bay at about the same time as the earthquake. These winds caused fires to spread rapidly.
Many homes were buried or swept away by landslides in the mountainous and hilly coastal areas in western Kanagawa Prefecture; about 800 people died. A collapsing mountainside in the village of Nebukawa, west of Odawara, pushed the entire village and a passenger train carrying over 100 passengers, along with the railway station, into the sea.
The RMS Empress of Australia was about to leave Yokohama harbor when the earthquake struck. It narrowly survived and assisted in rescuing 2000 survivors. A P&O liner, Dongola, was also in the harbor at the moment of disaster and rescued 505 people, taking them to Kobe.
A tsunami with waves up to 10 m (33 ft) high struck the coast of Sagami Bay, Bōsō Peninsula, Izu Islands, and the east coast of Izu Peninsula within minutes. The tsunami caused many deaths, including about 100 people along Yui-ga-hama Beach in Kamakura and an estimated 50 people on the Enoshima causeway. Over 570,000 homes were destroyed, leaving an estimated 1.9 million homeless. Evacuees were transported by ship from Kantō to as far as Kobe in Kansai. The damage is estimated to have exceeded US$1 billion (or about $16 billion today). There were 57 aftershocks.
Ethnic Koreans were massacred after the earthquake. The Home Ministry declared martial law and ordered all sectional police chiefs to make maintenance of order and security a top priority. A false rumor was spread that Koreans were taking advantage of the disaster, committing arson and robbery, and were in possession of bombs. Anti-Korean sentiment was heightened by fear of the Korean independence movement.
In the confusion after the quake, mass murder of Koreans by mobs occurred in urban Tokyo and Yokohama, fuelled by rumors of rebellion and sabotage. The government reported that 231 Koreans were killed by mobs in Tokyo and Yokohama in the first week of September. Independent reports said the number of dead was far higher, ranging from 6,000 to 10,000. Some newspapers reported the rumors as fact, including the allegation that Koreans were poisoning wells. The numerous fires and cloudy well water, a little-known effect of a large quake, all seemed to confirm the rumors of the panic-stricken survivors who were living amidst the rubble. Vigilante groups set up roadblocks in cities, and tested civilians with a shibboleth for supposedly Korean-accented Japanese: deporting, beating, or killing those who failed. Army and police personnel colluded in the vigilante killings in some areas. Of the 3,000 Koreans taken into custody at the Army Cavalry Regiment base in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture, 10% were killed at the base, or after being released into nearby villages. Moreover, anyone mistakenly identified as Korean, such as Chinese, Ryukyuans, and Japanese speakers of some regional dialects, suffered the same fate. About 700 Chinese, mostly from Wenzhou, were killed. A monument commemorating this was built in 1993 in Wenzhou.
In response, the government called upon the Japanese Army and the police to protect Koreans; 23,715 Koreans were placed in protective custody across Japan, 12,000 in Tokyo alone. The chief of police of Tsurumi (or Kawasaki by some accounts) is reported to have publicly drunk the well water to disprove the rumor that Koreans had been poisoning wells. In some towns, even police stations into which Korean people had escaped were attacked by mobs, whereas in other neighborhoods, civilians took steps to protect them. The Army distributed flyers denying the rumor and warning residents against attacking Koreans, but in many cases, vigilante activity only ceased as a result of Army operations against it. In several documented cases, soldiers and policemen participated in the killings, and in other cases, authorities handed groups of Koreans over to local vigilantes, who proceeded to kill them.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta are making a new legal push to crack down on crime in Oakland and Alameda County.
It follows the plan announced earlier this week to add 120 California Highway Patrol officers to boost security efforts in the East Bay.
The latest new partnership will help boost prosecution efforts.
The plan involves the use of attorneys from the California National Guard and state Department of Justice, adding more manpower to prosecute cases in Oakland and Alameda County tied to violent crimes, drug-related crimes and property crimes.
Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price in a statement Thursday says she welcomes the support.
"I welcome the support from the Governor in this fight against organized retail crime and the scourge of Fentanyl in our community," Price said. "I am assigning Alameda County career prosecutor Assistant DA Michael Nieto to represent my office in this collaborative effort."
Newsom added: "An arrest isn’t enough. Justice demands that suspects are appropriately prosecuted. Whether it's ‘bipping’ or carjacking, attempted murder or fentanyl trafficking, individuals must be held accountable for their crimes using the full and appropriate weight of the law."
Bonta said the East Bay is his home and he's committed to making sure the people of Oakland can live and work in a safe environment.

Map IX from Lives of Game Animals by Ernest Thompson Seton in the coyote chapter of Volume 1 part 2
Range of the Coyote by E T Seton, with assistance of the Biological Survey, 1923
In the long tongue south of Chicago, the Coyote is believed to be extirpated. Elsewhere it holds its original territory, though in reduced numbers, and is spreading as indicated by the black spots of which details are given in the text.
Map of North and South America with a shaded area showing the range of coyotes. The range extends from a stretch in Canada nearish to Alaska, down spreading to Wisconsin in the east, where it then tapers slightly to go down to the tip of texas. A sliver of empty shading within the line showing the old border exists below Chicago as the text implies. On the western side, it ranges the rockies just north of the US-Canada border, tapering wider to the San Francisco Bay in California. From those outer borders it goes down into Central America, stopping in a semicircle around the southern border of Mexico. There are dots indiciting sightings north along the west reaching towards Alaska, and east in the Michigan and New York area.

12th July 1834 saw the death in Hawaii of Botanist, David Douglas.
David Douglas, a Scottish was born June 25th, 1799 at Scone Douglas to a lower class family., he managed to acquire a modest amount of schooling - he learned Latin, for example - but his real love was the outdoors: animals, birds, and especially, plants and gardens. He managed to get a job as an assistant gardener at Scone Palace, and then he was fortunate to spend several years at the Glasgow Botanic Garden, where he arrived the same year as their new professor of botany, William Hooker, who would later become the first director of Kew Gardens in London. Hooker was only 35 years old when he met young Douglas, and the two hit it off extremely well, which means Douglas learned a great deal about plant identification and taxonomy.
About this time (1823), the Horticultural Society of London, founded in 1804, was looking to sponsor a collector who would go to some far-flung place, collect seeds, cuttings, and sprouts, and bring them back to be grown in the Society's gardens at Chiswick. It just so happened that the man hired to construct the gardens at Chiswick House in west London had previously rebuilt the gardens at Scone Palace, and he offered his opinion: pry that Douglas fellow away from Glasgow and send him out to collect plants. Hooker chimed in from Glasgow and agreed whole-heartedly. And so it came to pass. Douglas was first sent to the east coast of the United States, and although that trip was short - less than a year - it was extremely productive, yielding new varieties of apples and pears and plums (the Washington plum was a bit hit among London fructivores), and gardeners raved about the accomplishments of young Douglas.
In 1824, Douglas was sent out once more, this time to the Pacific Northwest, and this extended venture was a hundred times more productive, resulting in a great change in the landscape of Great Britain. Travelling with factors from the Hudson Bay Company, Douglas ascended the Columbia River, crossed the Continental Divide, climbed a few fourteeners along the way, and identified and collected over 200 new plants. He was the first Englishman to see and bring back cones of the Sugar Pine, the Lodgepole Piine, the Ponderosa Pine, and, of course, the Douglas-fir, all of which would soon be growing in English gardens and on Scottish estates within a year of his return in 1827. A number of Douglas-firs were planted on the grounds of Scone Palace, which makes them nearly 190 years old today (second image), and while they aren't quite as stately as some of the Douglas-firs in the Pacific Northwest, which can top 300 feet, several Douglas-firs in England exceed 200 feet in height, including the Stronardon Douglas-Fir, which is the tallest tree in the British Isles (third image).
Douglas made one more trip to the Northwest, with a most unhappy outcome. He visited Hawaii and became the second European to climb Mauna Loa. However, on his way to climb Mauna Kea, he fell into a wild cattle pit trap that was unfortunately already occupied, and he was trampled to death by an angry bull. Suspicions of foul play arose but were never confirmed. He was only 35 years old at the time of his death. But he lives on in his tree, which incidentally is not a true fir, which is why it is spelled with a hyphen.
Three monuments to Douglas that I discovered, ne is the David Douglas Pavilion at Scone Palace, which is constructed of wood from Douglas-firs grown on the estate. The second is a bust of Douglas at the VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, British Columbia. The third monument is a cairn in Hawaii at the site of Douglas’s death.

Millions brace for impact as Category 5 Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida, with evacuation time running out.
Milton regained Category 5 strength Tuesday evening, just a day after becoming one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. It is still expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches Florida's coast.
Millions across Florida are bracing for the potentially catastrophic impact of Hurricane Milton, which threatens to deliver a historically deep and dangerous storm surge along much of Florida's west coast, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 100 mph in the next 36 hours.

Milton regained Category 5 strength Tuesday evening, a day after becoming one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. It is still expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches Florida's coast.
“This is a very serious situation,” the National Hurricane Center warned on Tuesday. “Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”
State officials have been working urgently since Monday to evacuate millions from vulnerable coastal areas in what is being called Florida's largest mass evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017. Forecasts predict storm surges of 10–15 feet along the central western coast, with devastating waves driven by hurricane-force winds. These levels — far surpassing the damage caused by Hurricane Helene last month — would be the highest seen in over a century in the Tampa Bay region.
“You may think you’ve ‘been through hurricanes before,’” said FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross. “But you didn’t experience the 1921 storm that flooded much of Pinellas County, or the 1848 hurricane that pushed 15 feet of Gulf water where downtown Tampa now stands.”
The Florida National Guard has mobilized 5,000 troops to assist with the storm response, with an additional 3,000 expected to be deployed before landfall. To expedite evacuations, the Florida Department of Transportation has opened the shoulders on Interstate 4 and Interstate 75 for northbound traffic, and tolls have been suspended.
"Before Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida, some people were confused, made poor decisions, and tragically lost their lives," warned Bryan Norcross. "Don’t let that happen to you."
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a State of Emergency over the weekend for 51 of the state’s 67 counties, and President Joe Biden approved the state’s pre-landfall emergency declaration on Monday.
Shelters have begun opening, and the state has partnered with Uber to offer free rides to and from shelters for residents seeking refuge from Hurricane Milton. Meanwhile, Atlanta Motor Speedway announced it would open its campgrounds free of charge for evacuees from Florida.
On Tuesday, the first evacuations were ordered on Florida's east coast in St. John's County, including St. Augustine Beach, which is expected to face storm surges from the backside of Milton as it crosses the state.
Devastating winds set to rip through the heart of Florida In addition to the life-threatening storm surge, Hurricane Milton is expected to bring wind speeds exceeding 100 mph near the eyewall as it makes landfall. The Tampa area, in particular, could experience wind gusts of over 95 mph or more at landfall.
Weather Forecast For 35007 - Alabaster AL:
Even after landfall, damaging winds are expected to sweep across the central Florida Peninsula. Hurricane Milton is forecast to retain hurricane strength as it moves along the Atlantic coast, with Hurricane Warnings in place for 11 million people, including the Orlando area and the east coast from the St. Lucie/Martin County line north to Ponte Vedra Beach.
Storm surges are also anticipated along Florida's Atlantic coast, from the Space Coast to the First Coast, affecting cities like Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, and Jacksonville Beach.
Rainfall totals along Milton's path are expected to reach 8-12 inches, with isolated amounts up to 18 inches. The storm also poses a risk of scattered tornadoes, even before landfall.
Schools, airports, and theme parks shut down As Floridians prepare for the storm, widespread closures of schools, businesses, and travel hubs are in effect.
Tampa International Airport (TPA) suspended operations Tuesday morning, while Orlando International Airport (MCO), Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, and Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) will halt commercial flights starting Wednesday.
Schools and universities across much of the state have canceled classes through at least Thursday. Disney Parks, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld are also closing in anticipation of Hurricane Milton.
The Kennedy Space Center’s visitor complex will remain closed through Thursday.
Race against the clock.
Scars from Hurricane Helene still mark central Florida’s western beaches, just two weeks after the Category 3 storm battered the region with feet of storm surge and hurricane-force winds en route to the Big Bend area.

Sidewalks are lined with piles of debris, remnants of Helene's destruction, now at risk of becoming airborne missiles in Milton’s triple-digit winds or dangerous floating debris amid an even higher storm surge. On Tuesday, an army of dump trucks and bulldozers moved into neighborhoods to clear as much debris as possible, but the task is overwhelming.
“Hundreds of blocks have been decimated,” reported FOX Weather Storm Specialist Mike Seidel from Madeira Beach in Pinellas County, Florida. “They’ve cleared about a block in 45 minutes to an hour, but there are countless more, and time is running out before conditions worsen later Wednesday, certainly by Wednesday night.”
Seidel estimated that it would take another two weeks to clear all the debris. “But we don’t have that luxury,” he warned. “It’s back-to-back storms here in Pinellas County, from Helene to Milton.”
The same situation is unfolding at Bradenton Beach in Manatee County, where streets are strewn with debris and damage from Hurricane Helene, and the area is nearly deserted as the threat from Milton looms.
"This is not our first catastrophe. We have responded to many disasters in the past," Mike Eddins of the Florida State Emergency Response Team told FOX Weather’s Robert Ray. "While we’re accustomed to this, it always takes an emotional toll, especially in a community like this."

Eddins noted that his team has been on the ground for a week, assisting residents in their recovery from Helene.
"Now, to see these people finally get back on their feet, only to be faced with another setback in the coming days, takes an emotional toll not just on the community, but on my team as well," Eddins said.
