What is the best way to help dogs who are afraid of strangers?
Certain dogs have a severe dread of strangers. Any unfamiliar individual they encounter causes them to shrink, shake, and attempt to hide. Even though it's common for dogs to be wary of strangers, the best course of action is to greet them with open kindness rather than by hiding or taking off. It's an excellent move to learn the causes of your dog's extreme fear of strangers so you can assist it in overcoming its phobia. Read More...

Managing Leash Reactivity in European Dobermans: Effective Tips for Owners
Tumblr media
Introduction:
Leash reactivity can be a common challenge for European Doberman owners. Despite their loyal and affectionate nature, these majestic dogs may display reactive behavior when on leash, which can be stressful for both the dog and the owner. However, with patience, consistency, and proper training techniques, leash reactivity can be managed effectively. In this blog post, we'll explore practical tips for dealing with leash reactivity in European Dobermans.
Understanding Leash Reactivity:
Before diving into solutions, it's essential to understand what leash reactivity entails. Leash-reactive behavior typically manifests as barking, lunging, or pulling when the dog encounters certain triggers, such as other dogs, strangers, or unfamiliar environments, while on leash. This behavior often stems from fear, frustration, or a lack of socialization.
Tip 1: Identify Triggers and Avoidance Strategies
The first step in managing leash reactivity is identifying the triggers that set off your european doberman. Take note of specific situations or stimuli that cause reactive behavior, such as encountering other dogs or passing by busy streets. Once you've identified these triggers, try to avoid them whenever possible. For example, choose less crowded walking routes or schedule walks during quieter times of the day.
Tip 2: Use Positive Reinforcement Training
Positive reinforcement techniques can be highly effective in modifying leash-reactive behavior in European Dobermans. Whenever your dog remains calm and composed in the presence of triggers, reward them with praise, treats, or toys. This positive association helps to reinforce desirable behavior and encourages your dog to remain calm in similar situations in the future.
Tip 3: Practice Desensitization and Counterconditioning
Desensitization involves gradually exposing your european doberman to the triggers of their reactive behavior in a controlled and manageable way. Start at a distance where your dog remains calm and gradually decrease the distance over time as they become more comfortable. Combine desensitization with counterconditioning by pairing the presence of triggers with positive experiences, such as treats or playtime.
Tip 4: Maintain Control and Stay Calm
During walks, it's crucial to maintain control of the leash and remain calm and composed, even if your european doberman displays reactive behavior. Avoid yanking on the leash or shouting at your dog, as this can escalate their anxiety and reinforce the reactive response. Instead, practice firm but gentle leash handling techniques and use soothing verbal cues to reassure your dog.
Tip 5: Seek Professional Guidance
If leash reactivity persists despite your best efforts, consider seeking assistance from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist experienced in working with reactive dogs. They can provide personalized guidance, develop a customized training plan, and offer additional techniques to address your European Doberman's specific needs.
Conclusion:
Dealing with leash reactivity in European Dobermans requires patience, consistency, and a proactive approach to training. By identifying triggers, using positive reinforcement techniques, practicing desensitization and counterconditioning, maintaining control during walks, and seeking professional guidance when needed, you can help your european doberman overcome leash reactivity and enjoy stress-free walks together. With dedication and commitment, you can build a stronger bond with your beloved pet while ensuring their well-being and happiness.

Hello, I was wondering if you would consider doing a fluffy SAGAU with a soft yandere cult reacting to the reader who arrives in Teyvat being a traumatized and scared mess because of something they saw in our world. They are skeletal thin and leap at the slightest sound, they duck behind things to avoid being seen by others when they can and stammer and stutter over their words. Characters would be Jean, Ei, and Shenhe. If you are not comfortable writing this I understand, and am sorry.
this was so long ago im so sorry
Tumblr media
-you make me sick.
synopsis: fear is something that is almost unfeasible. today’s agenda? Jean, Ei, and Shenhe assist with it.
content warning: yandere themes, cult au, sagau, sensitive topics. [not proofread]
type of reader: gn!reader god!reader, darling!reader.
Tumblr media
“fear is something we all must overcome. but who will be there to help?”
Tumblr media
jean
“put all of your worries on me.”
our overworked knight is no stranger to fear. she would have never expected someone who would want to hurt you
there’s not much she can do now in all honesty, although jean will do her best to work for the smaller things. as many of us know, the small tasks can rack up quickly.
it breaks her heart to say you shudder in fear, hearing a mantra of “please” for all the wrong reasons. her patience is outmatched, so do not worry dear. you are safe.
it is the dead of night. a blanket of stars wraps monstadt. here by your side is jean. the world of teyvet is filled with numerous things, it’s quiet.
“everything alright your grace?” it’s soft, a calming voice, belonging to no other but jean. you never understood how all of this happened, although you’re glad it did.
“better than ever, thank you” a reply, something you weren’t allowed to do back in your world. this is wear you wanted to be, the world you loved and now lived in.
<3
Ei
“you have brought me up for an eternity, it’s the time for me to return the deed.”
i have no doubt that not even you will be able to resist the treats of inazuma. from the moment she saw you, she went completely guard dog.
a bad habit of hers is overwhelming questions. forgive her for the first impression, she worries, that is all.
no body will speak when you are speaking. your voice is loved, adored, by everyone. she refuses to let someone insignificant interrupt you.
she isn’t the best at comfort, yet, she tries ei tries her best. she’ll spoon feed you to get you more comfortable with food.
the plane of euthymia is calming, it has a sort of… white noise. who would have thought that someone like you would be adored by so many important people? it almost makes you laugh.
“and this is tricolored dango. you may have it back in your world, but i assure you ours is much better.” she’s sticking the dango right in front of your face. it started off odd but you’ve gotten used to it quickly.
you were about to speak but ei shushed you to just eat the dessert made for you.
“eat.” it’s not a command, but like a humorous motivation
<3
Shenhe
“i know not much of the incidents that had happened before, but i’m here to listen whenever necessary.”
no doubt, as a child shenhe had her fair share of fear and loneliness. she will never push you on why, but it will always be open for you to discuss.
with the information you know of her from before, it’s obvious what she says is true to heart. it’s a kind change.
shenhe is very strong with her words. she is one of the people who helps you on your journey of recovery, don’t judge her by rumors, after-all, all she really wants is to love you.
for once, the atmosphere is light. the mountains of liyue reach far. it’s a sight to behold one may say.
breathing, something people do so easily yet it’s easily one of the hardest things to do. for the first time in your life, sitting next to you is shenhe, her eyes are closed, but you know she’s aware. your able to breathe knowing your safe.
the monsters in teyvet do your every request, and althought it tales time to get used to, you finally feel like your getting somewhere.
it’s the things like these that let people heal.

RadioDust is the Healthiest Toxic Ship for Angel so far
@honesthazbinarchives Briefly. I’d like to go into this more in the future BUT these are the main points I said I’d do. Heh ‘stay tuned’ for why HuskerDust is toxic [haaaa funny fuckin reference n shit like Viv herself aint overdone it]. Yer dont even wanna know the lack of enthusiasm in tryna do a playful ‘cringetopia’ joke - wasnt as fun as anticipated. Anyfuckinways, the shit. Before we begin, disclaimers n whatnot, no hate intended, dni if you’re a bit of a knobhead [either stan or extreme anti], an all that nonsense. I dont own the characters no shit.  In this I’ll discuss how RadioDust aka SpiDEER (thats right, yer stuck w my shit humour now) is both the healthiest ship for Angel we’ve seen so far but still rather toxic. Idc if you hate me for it but dont fuckin waste yer time telling me. Great. I dont care. Yer fuckin hard n whatnot for harassin strangers online. Big dick energy to you. This will be slightly messy, my apologies, it’s a quick summary of many points.
Alright. Firstly, out of the entire male cast Angel interacts with over all platforms, Al is given a fair bit of mercy in terms of sexual advances. In fact, a swift ‘no’ and Angel doesn’t do it again - unlike most of the other cast [pent’s is covert, husks is overt]. One thing I like is that Angel himself admits to their chemistry (claiming that whilst he thinks Al’s a prick, he thinks Al dislikes him which saddens him as he’d at least like to be friends as he feels they have good chemistry - according to the VA via Hunicast’s 1yr anniversary), there’s no further efforts to jump on his dick but a clear curiosity/interest in what Al can do.  Lets go to the basics, both are of similar age [allegedly in their 30s, though Ive heard Al may be up to mid 40s] as well as created near the same-ISH time (as in, Viv’s oldest characters, at least for HH). Likewise, Viv admitted to knowing fuck all on either of their eras (and to make that public wasn’t really a wise choice BUUUT if you felt the need, it’s better worded with interest “Right now I’m working towards educating myself more on their time periods to improve their portrayals” <-- crucial if yer want that ‘realism’). Because of their real-world ages, Viv confesses they’re her favourites (even if you didnt know, she makes it pretty clear). It could be a nice ‘homage’ to their impact in her life but not too relevant otherwise. It could fulfil the need for self indulgence that she’s unhealthily leaking into the canon - which will ultimately make the series shit. No sugarcoating there.  As for their ages, a relationship can work whether the gap is large or small HOWEVER there are many ethics and conflicts to each. And being an adult into kids is always fucked up. With that being said, studies have shown that closer ages often work better due to the often similarities in mindset, maturity and life goals (older folks are more likely to want to settle, younger often have more ambitions), likewise there tends to be an unbalanced power-dynamic if the ages are too far, which can lead to various types of abuse. Dont get me wrong, being with someone much older (AS LONG AS NONE OF YALL ARE KIDS) very much CAN work - but rarely. There’s much more hardwork needed as well as being in the right mindset for both, otherwise it’s bad. More on that in HD. Long story short, both are closer in age meaning both are more ‘relatable’ to one another. There’s common grounds, even in the eras there’s some higher understanding of one another. Notice how Vaggie and Charlie are similar in age? (Even though Charlie is far older, her appearance and mentality for her race is on par with Vaggies, making it far more likely to work out positively) One of the most prominent out of all of this however is their actual interests. So listing; Both like action/chaos/having fun (often at the expense of others), both love cooking and can be food snobs in their own right, both have sadistic AND masochistic tendencies, Al likes performance and theatre whilst Angel loves *to* perform, on that last point Angel was very intrigued and enjoyed Al’s song number/performance naturally, both really enjoy pranks and both enjoy liquor (neither show an actual addiction, but rather an interest in social drinking - no dependencies on it). Again, close eras mean both have a higher probability of understanding the other and their lifestyles better. Both are high on appearance and love themselves, implying self confident mindset (healthy BUT the narcissism isnt) yet enough consideration for how they are viewed. On the parent system, one adores his mama whilst the other hates his pops.  Now Ive gone on about how they’re similar. But similarities ALONE is not enough. If it was, then fandom’s would be a lil more harmonious~ A HEALTHY relationship needs compatibility, POSITIVE conversation flow, common grounds, trust, openness and understanding. Even then, some people click and some just dont. It’s like how you can just hate someone for no reason. It just IS. Common grounds and similarity is scientifically proven to be attractive to someone - be it good or BAD. People are drawn to those like their parents in some way usually, likewise we look for people similar to ourselves (from our interests, to humour, beliefs, goals, etc). Science itself states that ‘opposites attract’ solemnly applies in the real world successfully. Though similiarity plays a large role, there has to be some differences too - that person is STILL an individual separate to yourself. Too similar and it’s boring. Too similar and you’ll do everything together without some ‘you’ time. Both Vaggie and Charlie have similar interests/hobbies in dance and music, yet still have enough differences to be identifiable when together. Vaggie is more grounded than Charlie. Charlie gives some optimism and fun to Vaggie. Remember, a partner does NOT complete you - that’s a toxic mindset when taken too seriously, You complete YOURSELF. Whether you have someone or not, you must feel complete in yourself as to not slip into toxic dependency on a lover - to become them, a shadow of them or feel like you’ve lost your identity without them. Sounds harsh but it’s true. Chaggie compliments each other without a dependency. You stand alone yet uplift one another. You don’t always agree but in the end you always have each other’s backs. Love is often butchered in a toxic light in the media.  So taking that into consideration, how does spideer work? Well, here’s some examples of good, bad and neutral: - Angel loves animals, Al fears/dislikes dogs. Perhaps Angel could assist him in overcoming this? - Al hates being touched, Angel dislikes being squeezed. Maybe this could help them reach an understanding... Or cause a rift? - Angel was the only one to break Al’s composure, either Angel is the *key* to delving further into Al’s more raw self... Or just another obVOXious pest? (yeah, I said it-) - Neither respect other’s boundaries, meaning both may fuel the other to be overly disrespectful in this area. Not good. - Angel is a sarky/sarcastic fuck, Al loves dry humour. Both seek amusement and chaos. In relationships one needs to see how conversation flows and in the hunicasts, both keep up some good as well as toxic banter. Both could roast the fuck out of an opponent however. - Al is acro/ace, Angel is hypersexual (appears like a sex addict - now I say this as his book has a crossed out ‘fun stuff’ with ‘work shit’ written on it. He’s always fixed on sex from his job to his humour), this could either aid Angel ease up on the sex stuff OR make him overly push it onto Al causing major rifts and discomfort (aces can have sex, ref to ace posts that real asexuals put to understand more but no one wants to be forced into sex is the point here). And we’ve already discussed their lack of respect for boundaries. The positive is that maybe this will make Angel understand how Val is rubbing off on his own behaviour towards men [again, more on that in the HD post]. - Both similar yet different in a way that does suit their compatibility chances but that doesnt mean they will click, it just improves the odds. - Both have similar enemies in Val and Vox, they’re on common terms. Likewise, Al is against the ‘sexual deviance’ of hell meaning he may be oddly supportive and protective of Angel in terms of Val. I dont even think his sadism will override this either. - Al dislikes modern tech, Angel seems to use it as his job requires it. A nice little menial difference. - Only ONE is an addict. Take it from an expert, you NEVER put two addicts together. They’re very vulnerable and prone to slipping deeper into their addictions as well as depending on each other too much that they essentially become very clingy, suffocating and toxic to each other. Seen it in action, it’s ugly.  - Both could have a lot of fun and calm moments with each other. - He isn’t immediately smitten with Al but immediately shows a natural interest in Al’s powers and performance, embracing it openly. Leads for a good friendship turned lovers plot. - In Viv’s patreon, she confirmed Angel loves confident guys [sounds exactly like Al] We need to think about where both are mentally. What benefits would a relationship give both? How would they be good and bad for each other? For Al, aside from his outdated views and being a fucking murderer and narcissist, he actually seems in a good mindspace for a relationship IF he opted to be in one. Angel however has a very immature mindset, likewise is in a phase of life where hes bed hopping. IF he were to be in a relationship, I’d say he needs a male equivalent of Cherri - someone with a similar mindset yet some differences, willing to have fun and in touch with their younger side, down to cuddle, open to share and receive love as well as not afraid to publicly be affectionate with him, someone who sees him as more than just for sex, someone fun, someone who’ll let him embrace his cutesy side publicly without shame - Cherri is younger so maybe someone who’s his age or slightly younger perhaps? I think Angel’s not retirement home ready to settle and needs someone on his level that can cuddle and chill as well as feels free and youthful enough to go wild with him. In one sense, he’s got a teen girl sorta mindset (dont put him with a teen though, it’s fuckin weird-). He needs someone positive and raw, someone to let him be himself as well as someone comfortable to be themselves around him. He has a habit of latching onto unobtainable men (in psychology, this is self sabotaging subconsciously): Travis the client, Val a pimp, Husk (emotionally unavailable and needs HEAVY self work - interestingly far more than Angel - plus he’s still onto his last relationship and an addict to gambling and alcohol), Pent who’s the enemy he was currently fighting (inappropriate timing), Alastor who’s not interested in another but his own needs [selfish, VERY bad for a relationship]. Subconsciously he’s self sabotaging on purpose. There’s many psychology books as well as sources online for this, if you’re interested. Either way, Angel is drawn to men either like his father [who dislike him, shun him, or are otherwise cold, abusive or just blatantly dislike or otherwise dont care about him] or anyone with money to fuel his drug addiction/’debt’ to Val. Going with any of these men isn’t a good idea.  Preferably, Angel needs someone who he doesnt immediately crush and obsess over. Someone who he doesnt sexually harass or assault. Someone he can build a connection with quickly that can bud into romance (think how Chaggie started as a friendship which clicked immediately). Maybe even someone he doesn’t expect to fall for but does so anyways. It would be more realistic as Viv wants as well as more healthy. That for once he isnt sex or money craved instantly, thus doesnt sexually harass/assault and is given a proper chance to develop and grow a friendship and love. Someone who isnt an addict.  Someone with an on-par mindset where they click. Someone open to love. For any chance of a good relationship, Angel needs to be with anyone BUT who we’ve already seen. There’s too much toxicity that’ll be swept under the rug and justified otherwise. Too much shit to fuel homophobes in terms of gay stereotypes. Even though Ive focused a fair bit on Angel, it’s NOT just about Angel. That’s something fans forget. Some he depends on or someone who depends on him in the long term wont last and will be very dangerous to both.  Just because you suffer, you dont then deserve to be rewarded with ‘something nice’. You dont get to have everything youve ever wanted. Giving him any of these blokes [minus Val] gives him a pass. Gives him what he wants. I get Viv loves him but life doesnt work that way. True lasting growth comes from learning that. Acceptance and growth. You dont get everything you want and sometimes thats a GOOD thing. He’s not a spoilt kid who gets everything he asks for, he’s YOUR creation. If you really wanted what your creations deserve then you need to research and be realistic with it. Because hes starting to feel like a shitty Gary-Stu at this rate. I live with an ‘Angel Dust’ like person. It used to feel like life gave her everything and most times it did. Everyone loved her and she could get away with murder if she wanted to. But now she’s had to struggle and grow, let go of some ‘wants’ because they werent good for her and she’s becoming better for it. She has a long way but she’s more humble for it now [still got self confidence but it’s less narcissism now, which is more healthy for her]. Also, they make the word anal lol

PALACES OF FORCE
Our journey to Paris and the Exposition Universelle de 1889 did not begin auspiciously. The trip required us to catch a train from Victoria Station, which is a terrible place. From Victoria Street the station appears to be nothing more than a shabby wooden shed, held together only by the many layers of paint that have been plastered on it over the years. The station’s exterior, however, offers barely a hint of the horrors within. The inadequate walls conceal the most chaotic, the most crowded and, assuredly, the dirtiest place I have ever seen.
And I am from Calcutta.
Everything was stained black by the smoke and clouded by billowing steam. I felt certain that, if I could but find a moment’s pause to contemplate it, I should be able to feel the station’s grime smearing itself across my face.
But there was no pause. The crowd heaved back and forth between the great hissing beasts of the engines. Men pushed and grunted, women screeched and shoved, and the children scuttled like rats and bellowed like savages. In terms of both volume and shrillness the noise of the crowd was almost a match for the whistling, rumbling, rattling, and hissing of the great steam engines that loomed over us all.
Though I have lived here now for somewhat more than sixty years, I still find it impossible to reconcile England’s conception of itself as the world’s most civilised nation with the wolfish mob its people become when gathered together. It is as though the English, by constant repetition of their claim to an excess of refinement, hope that it will become reality. It is plainly a deception, though perhaps not without a certain admirable intent.
My companion and I struggled through the noise and press of the station to our appointed platform and the night train to Paris. The distinctive yellow-ochre of the Brighton and South Coast Line trains took on a sickly pallor in the dim light and smoke-laden air. A discreet display of coin caught the attention of a somewhat reluctant porter, and we made our way along the platform.
My companion, Mohandas, was a quiet man, shy and softly spoken even in his native Gujarati and more so when required to converse in English, though he was quite fluent. You will have heard of him of course, as he is now more than famous. Then, however, he was simply a student hoping to be called to the bar. Like many of the Indians who came to England to study at that time he affected to become, in appearance and behaviour, a more precise instance of the idealised English gentleman than any I have ever encountered amongst the native population. However, unlike the majority – including, I freely confess, myself – Mohandas maintained the proprieties of diet and religious observance. This religious bent and his somewhat serious manner had led some of our fellows to abandon him as a prig and a bore. I fear he pricked their consciences. For myself, having no conscience, I found him honest and intelligent, and we became regular companions.
He dressed in the most proper fashion, taking the utmost care with his appearance. Those who know him only from the newsreels may imagine that Mohandas only ever dressed in the simplest of clothing, but when I think of our youthful days together in London, I see him in the clothes he wore that day: a chimney-pot hat and suit bought in Bond Street, with a gold watch chain across his chest.
Assisted by the porter, we installed ourselves in a compartment in the first class carriage and settled down. We had, thanks to my habitual punctuality, arrived a little early and our train was quite empty so we were able to pick our compartment and arrange ourselves before the majority of passengers arrived. As the time of our departure neared, the train became quite full, crowded even, and I waited with interest to see who would share our compartment. I watched as several of our fellow travellers peered through the glass of the door, then turned away with expressions of distaste.
I dismissed it with a shrug, and if Mohandas noticed he gave no sign. As has always been his way, he spent any spare moment reading voraciously. He had galloped through the Daily News, The Daily Telegraph and The Pall Mall Gazette, and was absorbing The Times when there was a roar from the guard on the platform and a blast from the engine’s whistle, and the train juddered forward. We were leaving at last. I stared out the window, watching the dark and crowded platforms slip away. And then we were out of the station and, for a moment, I was blinded by the early evening sun.
I blinked several times, and when I recovered the most handsome man I have ever seen was standing in the doorway to our compartment.
He was several inches taller than my own six feet, with beautiful deep-set blue eyes. Though he was obviously Caucasian, his skin was almost as deeply coloured as my own. His hair was black and, growing slightly longer than might everywhere be consider proper, it tangled into curls. His full beard was lightened by a faint, reddish touch. He was tall, but even through his fashionable pinstripe suit I determined a slender boyishness about his body.
I nodded and the stranger smiled. There was a shyness about his demeanour that only enhanced his physical beauty. He sat next to me, facing Mohandas.
“It seems you have offended some of your fellow travellers,” the man said.
Mohandas looked up sharply.
“But we spoke to no one,” I said.
“Some people need only the slightest of excuses to become offended,” he said. His accent was marked and I assumed he was Scottish, though I would later learn he had been born in Ireland.
“Such as?” It was Mohandas who had spoken. I was quite surprised for it was usual for him to require a lengthy courtship with a new acquaintance before overcoming his natural reserve to address them directly.
“Oh, the usual. The cut of your suit, the style of your shoes…” he paused, and looked around as though searching the cabin for examples of things that might offend a polite sensibility, then he smiled. “The colour of your skin?”
I grunted a laugh and even Mohandas grinned.
“Casement,” the young man thrust out an open hand and I shook it vigorously. “Roger Casement. Very pleased to make your acquaintance.”
“Sanjit Kamath,” I introduced myself. “And this is my friend and colleague, Mohandas Ghandi.”
“I believe I have heard of you, Mister Casement,” Mohandas said as they shook hands.
The young man cocked his head to one side.
“Really?”
“You have been in Africa? One of Stanley’s men, in The Congo Free State?”
“I was, but how could you know?”
“Your friend, Henry Ward, has spoken most highly of you, at our meetings.” Mohandas pulled out a pamphlet on vegetarianism and I barely suppressed a groan.
“You know Henry?”
“I have attended meetings of the Vegetarian Society with him.” He waved the pamphlet at young Casement; Henry Ward’s name was on the front. “Hearing your name, I could not fail to know you by his description.”
Casement leant back in his seat, stretching his long legs. He seemed, suddenly, entirely at ease. “Well, if you’re friends with Henry, then I am sure this trip will be most pleasurable.”
Our eyes met for a moment and a smile curled my lips.
“Most pleasurable,” I said.
*
I have forgotten much of the conversation that passed between the three of us on that journey to Paris, but I do remember that we talked about Livingstone and the Congo, and about the prospects for establishing a genuine commonwealth in Africa that might serve as a beacon for the whole continent and perhaps the world. Casement was passionate and sincere in a way that only young men who have found a true cause can be. I found him immensely likable and attractive, and we chatted endlessly.
Mohandas spoke rarely, but one of his interventions sticks clearly in my mind, for it was my first insight into the political ideas that were coming to the boil inside his head.
I had asked young Casement what he hoped to achieve in Africa.
“Why, to end slavery, to ameliorate the most awful conditions that the natives must endure, and to spread enlightenment of the ways of the modern world.” Casement said. He spoke so straightforwardly and earnestly that it was impossible to doubt his sincerity and difficult to resist his beautifully simple vision.
Mohandas laid the book he was reading onto his lap.
“And what if the people there do not want your enlightenment, Mister Casement?”
Casement looked surprised. He stared at Mohandas for a moment, opened-mouthed. The idea had clearly never occurred to him.
“But you have not seen the terrible conditions in which they live,” he said. “Each new tribe we discover suffers an existence a civilised man would not wish upon a dog!”
Mohandas smoothed out his suit trousers. It was, I thought, a very lawyerly motion.
“I believe I have seen such conditions in my own homeland,” he said. “Are you to tell me that the poor natives of India or Africa are better off for the coming of the white men?”
“No,” Casement didn’t hesitate. “Not yet. But that is because they are being exploited. We, that is those of us who support the Free State, wish to liberate the Africans from such exploitation and to establish them as a modern nation amongst the peoples of the world.”
“And what if they do not wish to be modern in your ways?” Mohandas turned to look out the window as Kent, low and lush, rumbled past. “Has it occurred to you that their traditions and their way of life may be as valuable as yours?”
It clearly hadn’t, for Casement fell silent.
After a moment I changed the subject and we talked of happier subjects, perhaps of cricket – my true love – or mutual acquaintances and our plans for our time in Paris.
Later, the young Mister Casement and I spent two hours together in his cabin on the steamer that carried us across The Channel. He was a strong and fierce lover. It is my clearest and most cherished memory of our time together.
*
I will not dwell on the details of the 1889 Exposition, except for those that impinge most pertinently on this tale. None who were not in Paris that summer can hope to comprehend the scale and opulent magnificence of the display that girdled the Seine. And, even these many years later, those who journeyed through its many wonders will not require my aid to recall the impression that the city and the Exposition made upon everyone who took in its sights.
Suffice it to say that those who consider these things, experts who have attended similar events all across the globe, judged the Paris Exhibition of 1889 to be the most extraordinary and comprehensive gathering of mankind’s many achievements in the fields of art and science. Subsequent years may have witnessed mankind’s increasing ingenuity and the blossoming fruits of many great minds, but there are still those who insist that the Paris Exposition has never been surpassed or even matched. All man’s greatest achievements to that point were on display on the Champ de Mars that summer and the path that would lead us into the next century was set out for all to follow.
The once-controversial symbol of the exhibition, Mister Eiffel’s great tower, remains in place – now synonymous with France herself – but the Exposition left a more subtle mark in the souls of the many millions of visitors lucky enough to have explored its wonders.
*
The planet span serenely at our feet. First, one noticed the vast white ice cap of the Arctic, then, as we circled slowly around and down past the equator, the great expanses of Asia were gradually dwarfed by the ungraspable hugeness of the Earth’s oceans, until at last the Southern ice cap was above our heads, and we had passed below the planet.
It was a most disconcerting experience.
The globe, as high as a three-storey house, dominated the huge room, and a single walkway spiralled around it as the planet itself rotated. By some fluke we had entered the room when it was otherwise empty, and in the church-like silence I found myself deeply moved by this vision of our planet.
The sense that the globe represented something fundamental was profound. The immensity of the world on which we live, and our own smallness within it, was made plain. Its scale – one millionth of the planet’s actual scope – staggered the mind. Only when faced with such a sight, the vast globe encompassed in a glance, can one comprehend how insignificant is humanity. But, more surprisingly, I was at the same moment struck by the fragility of the planet, a tiny haven of life in an unimaginably larger universe. We were insignificant specks on the face of a planet that, itself, seemed suddenly no more than a full stop in a lost volume on a forgotten shelf in some great library.
The great mountain ranges appeared as but wrinkles on an aged face. The greatest rivers seemed to be no more than trickles into oceans that were themselves made simple pools that a child might splash through. The portion of our planet that is habitable, squeezed between expanses of ocean and ice, driest desert and sterile mountains, seemed reduced to so small a sliver that the distances that divide race from race seemed meaningless.
I dare say that no man capable of reason could have gazed upon that globe and not been moved by the essential unity of humankind.
Casement was stroking his beard, looking up at the planet, his eyes followed southernmost tip of South America as it passed across his field of vision. Mohandas had paused further up the walkway. I can still see him, in my mind’s eye, standing just below equator, one hand slightly out-stretched as though he would scoop up the waters of the Pacific Ocean
In that moment the only sound was the gentle rumble of the machinery that drove the great globe.
Then the door above us opened and a group of giggling girls entered the chamber. The spell was broken.
“Shall we move on?” I said.
*
Our next steps took us into the future. From the chamber containing the globe we crossed to the Galerie des Machines.
This hall, dubbed the “Palace of Force” by one Parisian commentator, was itself a symbol of man’s power over nature. One knew, logically, that innumerable tonnes of iron anchored the great vaulted roof that arced high above us, but under acres of glass and in the summer afternoon’s sunlight that flooded everywhere, that mass of metal seemed to become attenuated. It was possible to imagine that the whole building could simply waft into the Parisian sky. We descended a wide staircase to a viewing platform dominated by a tall, skeletal clock tower. We paused there; we had entered through the western end of the Gallerie and stretching away below us was the first of two great wings that met beneath a glass dome that was larger, lighter, and more impressive than anything in Europe’s ancient cathedrals. My own reaction was reflected in the gasps and exclamations of my fellow visitors. The torrent of people divided on the platform and swept downwards to the Gallerie’s floor via two sweeping staircases.
There was a moment’s respite then, as one recovered from the shock of this extraordinary building. We regrouped, sharing glances that, at least on the part of Casement and myself, revealed that we were almost awe-struck. That this temple of light and iron had made an impression on Mohandas was obvious, though whether it was favourable was not at all certain.
No sooner had we become accustomed to the magnificence of the great exhibition space than we began to become aware of the wonders it contained.
Looming over the entrance stood the engine of an ocean liner – a cathedral of steel and brass, dwarfing all who entered and impressing on everyone the power now in the hands of man. Elsewhere hundreds of smaller engines wheezed, slapped, and banged, illustrating the many tasks man’s ingenuity had found for them.
For myself and Casement the Hall of Machines was a delight. We jigged from stand to stand, gasping at each toy or gadget, thrilled by the endless possibilities that opened up with each new discovery. Everywhere electric lamps flickered even in the sunshine, and the exhibition was filled with swarms of photographers who went about their task with a fervour, recording every miniscule detail. Moving pictures flickered in darkened booths. Recorded music blared from Berliner gramophones. Daimler motorcars trundled amongst the wide aisles between walls of machinery. Everything that we later took for granted – the whole future – was here.
In the centre of the hall, beneath the vast dome, two balloons were suspended. The smaller example was a model of the gaudy device that had first born the Mongolfier brothers aloft just a century before. Dwarfing that, however, as Jupiter does its many moons, was its modern equivalent – a great crimson orb below which was suspended a wicker basket.
We paused beneath it. Casement smiled to himself then signalled to the balloon’s attendant.
“What are you doing?” I asked, but he ignored me and took the attendant to one side and began a whispered discussion that commenced with a regretful but firm shaking of the attendant’s head and concluded with a handshake and a discreet exchange of francs.
“Come along.” Casement held aside a thick red rope and waved us towards the balloon’s basket.
Mohandas stopped and looked toward the attendant who bowed respectfully.
“What have you done?” I asked.
“I told him Mohandas was the Rajah of Peshawar,” a huge boyish grin split Casement’s face. “And that he was interested in buying a fleet of balloons to enable exploration of the Himalayas.”
A look of outrage spread across Mohandas’s face but we rushed to his side and Casement shuffled him into the basket before he could splutter a word. I distracted the attendant with a most elaborate namaste.
Once the wicker basket was raised above the floor of the hall of machines, Mohandas’s outrage dissipated and his natural curiosity asserted itself. Casement stood alongside Mohandas, and the two of them could hardly have presented a greater contrast. Casement was tall and hale so that even standing still he seemed to vibrate with barely restrained energy. Dwarfed beside him, and fragile, Mohandas held himself so perfectly still that the world seemed to pivot about him. Even then I worried whether his slight frame could carry the burdens he took upon himself – yet he never buckled.
Casement seemed quite transported by the sights and sounds of the great machines now at man’s bidding. “Impressive, isn’t it? These engines are power incarnate. They are the way to the future.”
“Certainly,” Mohandas did not look at him. “They are the way to a future.”
Casement caught the barb; clearly he had not forgotten their brief exchange on the train. He swept his hand across the scene below them. “Do you really mean you believe that the people of Africa or India would be better off if we denied them all that this could offer?”
“What does it offer, my friend?”
“They’d have the strength to build, the ability to control their lands, the power to protect themselves against the predation of the white nations or their fellows.” Casement was counting off the obvious benefits on his fingers. “They could ensure comfort from want and safety from exploitation. And with ease from such fears comes the ability to devote time to art and science and the true fruits of civilisation.”
“These machines could do that for the poor of India and Africa?” Mohandas was smiling.
“Of course! Look around this room. Think what they have done for Britain and France.”
“So you believe that these great machines could make the poor of the rest of the world as fortunate as the poor of Limehouse or Manchester or Birmingham?” Mohandas shook his head. “How happy they will be that such luxury has only cost them their lands and their traditions.”
Whatever response Casement was planning stuck fast. He stared out across the exhibition, gathering his thoughts.
“Of course, the present organisation of our society is far from perfect,” he said.
“I hadn’t taken you for a communist.”
“I am not,” Casement visibly bristled, pulling himself to his full height. “But I will concede that there are ways industrial society could better provide for its people.”
“And who will care for the people when these great machines rust, when the land has been abandoned and the crops fail?” Mohandas’s hand chopped the air. “When these machines become scrap, Mister Casement, how will your Empire feed our people then?”
“I have said that changes are necessary,” Casement met Mohandas gaze and held it, visibly trying to restrain his anger. “But I hardly think an Irishman needs a lecture from anyone on the consequences of famine.”
There was silence then, for what seemed like a very long time. Even the sound of the machines in the exhibition hall and the thousands of people moving just a few dozens of feet below us seemed to fade away. I found myself unable, or perhaps unwilling, to intercede, for I felt certain some crucial struggle was taking place. But there was to be no victor here and, after an eternity, it seemed, the two men reached some silent accord and smiled.
The mood immediately lightened and Mohandas, looking out over the Galerie des Machines, pointed to some stall that caught his eye.
I signalled to the attendant of the balloon, who set to winching us back to earth.
“You shouldn’t have lied,” Mohandas said, nodding towards the attendant. Casement’s face was a sudden mask of utter contrition.
“I did not mean to-”
Mohandas rested a hand on his arm, leaning close, smiling.
“I have never even been to Peshawar.”
Casement’s laughter rang out across the Palace of Force.
*
The next day we took a journey into the past. Our trip through time took us down a boulevard illustrating the history of human habitation presented in exquisitely detailed reconstructions or large models. We began in the familiarity of the present but quickly passed a delightful hostelry of the Renaissance, the rougher dwellings of the Dark Ages, the glory of Rome and the simpler elegance of Greece, back through the cruder dwellings of the stone ages and, ultimately, to the troglodyte beginnings of mankind in caves lit by guttering flame. Nor was only European history presented, for the display featured civilisations from across the globe, from the tepees of the Red Indian and the adobe homes of the Americas before the Europeans arrived, to the homes of ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, and Phoenicians. Perhaps unsurprisingly Mohandas and I were particularly fascinated by the reconstruction of the Brihadisvara temple in Thanjavur. We were most impressed by the attention to detail in the reproduction which included the great bull and the Periya Koil.
Finally we reached the end of the boulevard and, rather tired and hot in the afternoon sun, we were drawn to the shade of what appeared to be a small copse of exotic trees from which strange music floated.
Beneath the trees we found reconstructed a village of the native people of Malay. At first glance it was little more than a scattering of bamboo shacks thatched with palm-leaves, and yet there was something in the grace of the buildings that spoke of a simple life in a bountiful land. Rather than the construction of man, the village seemed to have formed organically from the very stuff of the forest and it seemed that to live life in a place like this would be to become an organism in service of the trees.
We followed the music to an open theatre, roofed with more palm leaves but open at the side, and watched a traditional dance performed by a group of native girls. They were such slight creatures that it seemed impossible that they should dance with such grace while encumbered with head-dresses and thick bracelets, brooches, buckles, and embroidered garments. But graceful they were, and they moved with such entrancing charm that the three of us stood quite transfixed as their arms and fingers etched intricate, exotic patterns on the Parisian air and their musicians beat out rapid yet oddly plaintive rhythms.
How long we stood there I cannot tell, but when the show finished the first hint of evening could be felt on the air and the feeling of being transported to some distant shore was complete. Silently we made our way back to the huts of the village and dipped inside the first one, finding low benches set around the wall. We spoke not a word as we arranged ourselves, perhaps fearing to break the spell that the dancers had woven around us. We were entranced.
“This is how life should be,” I said eventually, stretching out in contentment.
“Exactly!” Mohandas suddenly leaned forward. “This is the life for which we are intended. This is the level at which our moral and economic life should be organised. We cannot understand the world in a city where every neighbour is a stranger – we have no feeling of kinship. But in a place like this, where everything is shared, men could see the consequences of their actions and be held responsible for them. In a place like this, justice would be a reality.”
“You’re a romantic!” Casement was laughing but not mocking.
“You think so?”
“You think this thing,” Casement took in the village with a flick of his head, “is real. It isn’t. It’s a fiction.”
“Not this place, perhaps, but places like this are real.”
“No,” Casement’s voice rose slightly. “I hadn’t seen it before but your background has made you as distant from places like this as mine.”
“You know nothing of my background.”
“I think I do. You are a child of privilege – more so even than I, I think–”
“My family were not wealthy.”
“No? But you have been privileged. You have had an education, a chance to travel, and all the while protected by your family’s position. You said your father was a politician, so you have grown up amidst the exercise of power.”
“That hardly invalidates my opinions.”
“Of course not,” Casement stood up and walked to the door of the hut, bending to look out into the village beyond. “But you know nothing of what it is to really live in places like this.”
“And you do?”
“More than you, I think.” He dipped beneath the roof of the hut and stepped out. Mohandas followed him. Reluctantly, I trailed behind – regretting what I had started. “At least I have lived amongst these people – though, I confess, always apart, always with the knowledge that I could walk away. But I saw enough to see that their life was not one of harmony with their surroundings but a struggle just to gather enough to live. One poor harvest and a generation may be lost.”
“Then we should temper our society to live by what nature can provide.”
“Why, when we have the power to set these people free from nature’s tyranny?”
“You think your work sets the poor free, but you simply bring them another form of imperialism,” Mohandas’s lawyerly training had taken control; he spoke evenly and with confidence. “The ideas of progress you force upon them are as alien and destructive as any imperial army.”
“Perhaps,” Casement conceded and, for a moment, Mohandas broke his stride – surprised. “But the ideas I bring them are no more alien than yours, and no more dangerous.”
“Dangerous? How could it be dangerous to live within one’s means?”
“How could such communities protect themselves from the true imperialists – whether amongst their neighbours or the white men?”
“But what would an imperialist want with a poor village?”
“Wealth.”
“But a place like this would have no gold, no jewels,” Mohandas smiled. “I think there would be nothing here to bring the conqueror.”
“I think you misunderstand the nature of wealth and the desire for power.” Casement did not return the friendly smile. “Riches aren’t built on gold but on people. What use is gold if you have no labour to dig it from the ground? How can palaces be constructed if you have no slaves to build them for you? And what good is wealth if there are not masses of people possessing nothing to gaze upon your fortune with envious eyes? What is power if it is not exercised in the subjugation of others to your will?”
Mohandas opened his mouth to speak, but Casement did not pause. He was striding around the little village now, hands clenched behind his back, his body tense, his jaw firmly set. His voice was loud, his accent becoming quite nasal and pronounced, and his eyes were ablaze.
“But this all starts from a false premise. Those with power would never let your dreamy villages exist, for they would bring gold and trinkets and buy your villagers first, and if that did not work they would bring rifle and horse and force their compliance. The only way that a village like this can be free is if its people are given the tools of the modern age and made as powerful as anyone who would threaten them. It is the job of those who care to construct a decent world to give them those tools.”
“No!” Mohandas’s voice was gentler than Casement’s and he habitually spoke so softly that the fact that he raised it now visibly shocked the young Irishman. “Guns are nothing without men to wield them. Gold is nothing without people willing to be bought. You underestimate the power of resistance.”
“And you underestimate the determination of the powerful to stay that way.”
There was a rustle in the trees. I looked up to see the Malayan girls whose performance we had recently watched peeking from between the leaves of the plantation’s vegetation. How long they had been there, I could not guess. From the bewildered looks on their faces, it had clearly been long enough to understand that the two smartly-dressed gentlemen before them were arguing furiously.
One of the girls noticed me and I doffed my hat to her. She giggled and nudged one of her companions who, in turn, began to laugh. My companions, however, were so entirely engrossed in their debate that they squabbled on, unaware of their audience. One of the bolder girls began to imitate Casement’s mannerisms, which set another girl to imitate Mohandas’s air-cutting hand movements.
The giggling turned into outright laughter.
At last there was a pause.
The argumentative pair turned towards me, confused. I nodded towards the trees. The Malay girls howled and suddenly the two lions of debate became blushing boys. In a moment, I was roaring more loudly than any of the dancers.
*
“I must go on to Brussels tomorrow,” Casement said as we paused on the Pont de l’Alma. We were alone, Mohandas having gone in search of vegetarian food, and the streets of Paris suddenly emptied. “I must see if there is work for me back in Africa.”
He placed his hands on the low balustrade and I rested my hand on top of his. He looked around furtively and then leant his shoulder against mine. We shared a smile.
Paris had pulled down the stars and draped them around herself. The banks of the Seine glowed with all the majesty of the Milky Way. The river, blacker than the night sky, ripped silently against the bridge’s buttresses and reflected a uncountable points of light in every swirl and eddy. Further down the river the city’s other bridges were ribbons of light leaping across the darkness. Boats of every shape and size, brightly lit and filling the night with laughter and the clinking of glasses, seemed to dance at the feet of the great statues that guarded our bridge.
“At least tonight will be memorable,” I said.
Casement, his eyes on the rippling river, nodded and smiled softly, but I sensed part of him was already back in Africa.
*
Now, almost seventy years after our trip to Paris, Casement is long gone – executed in an English jail – and my friend Mohandas is dead these ten years – assassinated by a fool. Both lived their beliefs, turning ideas into actions, and both were killed because of them.
Though the history books show that their lives followed quite separate trajectories, I have recently come to think that they led to rather similar places. Both fought for independence for countries that would ultimately be divided by religious enmity that was stronger than they could conceive. And their dreams of justice and equality have been betrayed by those who used revolutions to replace one corrupt set of rulers with another. Neither man would be content with the continuing penury and exploitation of his nation’s poor and both would, I am sure, find themselves fighting the very governments they struggled to create. In revolution or resistance, progress or simplicity, Irishman and Indian were both victorious and defeated, and they have become symbols that embarrass those who have come after them.
Today I found myself wandering with my friends through the Paris of the Exposition and that great model of the globe was spinning, once again, at our feet. Somewhere above my head a Russian device is circling the globe. I have heard its frantic, crackling warble on the wireless. I wonder if allowing all humanity to stand above the Earth and watch it turn might not have the same profound effect on all the world that it on the three of us so long ago. However we die, we live together and now we can see the world now as it truly is, just a speck. Yet even this mote – significant only to us – is so massive that it overwhelms our petty differences.
I see the great engines of the Galerie des Machines and laugh at how impressed we were by toys that have been entirely surpassed in the years that followed. I think of our journey into the past, to that most distant village, and my companions’ disagreement. I am surprised that my strongest memory is not of the words of two great men putting forward their visions for a better world but of the laughing Malay girls who mocked them before going on their own way through their ersatz forest and away into the Parisian night, quite unaware of the weight of the discussion they had witnessed.
Finally, I am back on the Pont de l’Alma and the smell of roses rolls across the water from the gardens constructed on the Trocadéro. I turn back to gaze at the Champ de Mars; Eiffel’s slender tower knifes the night sky with twinkling diamonds and the great palaces shine brightly. The South Bank is ablaze with the light of man’s greatest achievements. I reach out and, just for a moment, I seem to have gripped all time and space and that I might manipulate an awesome power to remake the world.
I could set free the engines that Casement so admired. Unleashed at last, their energies might set men free.  Or I could crush them and cast us all back to innocence. Mohandas believed that those machines were as much the tools of slavery as chains and rifles.
The choice is mine. If I can make it.
I hesitate.
And then Casement is beside me, urging me onwards into the Parisian night. I follow him into the gardens on the Trocadéro and we lose ourselves again amongst tall hedges and the perfume of flowers.

Being Alone, Andrew Bogut, and Animals: 27233-2 years old, 48 lbs Surrendered due to NYCHA ban Beautiful, young, friendly, affectionate, smart, very obedient, well behaved when home alone, lived in total harmony with a small dog, kid friendly, housetrained (uses wee- wee pads too) td'lanhattan waitina for a famiu & (oye **** TO BE KILLED - 5/10/2018 **** LADY IS A GEM THAT WE CAN'T ALLOW TO BE OVERLOOKED :'( What do you think Lady was thinking when she walked through the doors of the NYC ACC and had to sit and take in the sights and smells of the raucous shelter as her parent talked back and forth with a stranger? Was she her usual shy self, her heart pounding as her parent stood up and headed for the door? Did she try to follow, anxious and scared, only to have the door slammed in her face? Did she think to herself, “You are not mine, but sometimes I pretend that you wish you were…and I often forget it’s just something I’ve made up….you do not want me, and you are not mine.” Did she lose hope? Lady did nothing wrong and everything right – she was a perfect proven family pet who was affectionate, friendly, and playful – a pup who followed you around for love and got along great with the small dog she lived with. She was relaxed, playful and respectful of children, and played gently with adults. She only needed a few minutes to overcome her inherent shyness and warm to new people, and then they were friends for life - no holds barred! There is no one more perfect, or perfectly sweet, and she has a sterling resume to boot – housetrained, knows many commands but her favorite is “give paw,” and she loves slow walks on leash. So please don’t let this stellar girl die. She was short-changed by the NYC Housing Ban that didn’t allow her parent to keep any pet over 25lbs! That’s certainly NOT something she should die over, it’s a cruel and terrible piece of legislation! If you are an experienced foster or adopter in an adult only home, who can be her knight in shining armor, you simply MUST get off your sofa right now and PRIVATE MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance. When approached by unfamiliar handlers outside of her kennel, Lady becomes tense and begins to hard bark at times. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13) Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Lady lunging, barking, and growling at people in the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Lady is reported to growl if her treats or bones are touched. We recommend that Beatty be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Lady's mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Lady is fearful at the care center and has barked and growled at new people. In her previous home, she was described as shy with new people. It is important to always go slow and give Lady the option to walk away from any social interaction. Lady should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Lady’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Lady would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Lady has been observed to react to human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Lady may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Kennel presence: Lady reacts to new people who approach her kennel, barking and growling. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Lady may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations. * TO FOSTER OR ADOPT * If you would like to adopt a dog on our “To Be Killed” list, and you CAN get to the shelter in person to complete the adoption process *within 48 hours of reserve*, you can reserve the dog online until noon on the day they are scheduled to die. The wolf at the door (domestication of technology, part 1)
One of the enduring objects used to represent the technological future is the robot. This legacy means that its promise has the ability to evolve in accordance with our societal and cultural dreams and aspirations. It can reflect the current state of technological development, our hopes for that technology as well as our fears. Fundamentally though, after almost a century of media depictions and corporate promises, robots are yet to enter our homes and lives in any meaningful way. Or at least not in the way we expected.
If we’re going to talk about robots we should begin with a definition. But this is by no means an easy task. Robot does not refer to one specific object; it is not based on a singular technology, context, or function; and while certain stereotypical (e.g. anthropomorphic) robot forms pervade, other diverse and surprising configurations of technology can also be considered a robot. The robot can exist simultaneously in multiple contexts and planes of reality, and for a multitude of reasons: as a functional engineered machine operating autonomously on a production line (such as an industrial robot); as a corporate vision of the future (humanoid robot); as a complex construct of fiction (android); or as a high-street product (robotic vacuum cleaner). While the promiscuity of the generic concept often leads to a blurring of these worlds and indeed the promise of migration between them, the actual artefact is very poor at making this transition - the spectacular robots of our technological dreams are yet to make it into our everyday lives.
Tumblr media
With such a broad range of possibilities the definition must be quite vague. But for the purposes of this discussion it could be as follows:
For a thing to be considered a ‘robot’ it should be able to sense and interpret in some fashion its environment, compute decisions based on that sensory information, and then act on those decisions in some way.
This statement is satisfying from a technical perspective, but its dryness fails to reflect the mythical or emotive factor commonly associated with robots. Therefore to the technical definition we will add:
The complexity or sublimity of either the sensing, computing or mechanics should elevate the status of the robot above that normally ascribed to machines or products.
The dream of robot servants, as with so many technological dreams, is centuries old. In the 1890s Oscar Wilde talked about the need for mechanical slaves in his manifesto for fully automated luxury socialism. At the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation gave the dream a physical form with Electro, a giant metal walking and talking robotic man. While not the first humanoid robot, Electro was important for pushing forward the idea that robots could enter the home as domestic help.
Tumblr media
The promise of this particular type of robot future persists to this day, exemplified by corporate robots such as Honda’s ASIMO and the vast number of similar objects emerging out of academic and corporate research. But while such robots have become commonplace in production lines, tech fairs and research laboratories, their presence is yet to be accommodated in the domestic sphere. Robots continued to hover at the threshold as unwelcome guests, our resistance to strangers seemingly too strong to overcome. Bringing a full-sized humanoid robot into the domestic sphere would be like bringing a wolf through the door. Instead, like the gradual domestication of the wolf, it is happening little by little, in gradual steps, by the process of future nudge. New types of robots are entering millions of homes with the introduction and growing ubiquity of AI-based virtual assistants. Not in our homes, obviously - we’re not called Crap Futures for nothing. But a lot of people actively welcomed these devices into their daily lives.
The key word to describe these new robots is adaptation. Embedding virtual assistants in phones and watches blurred the lines from the start. These familiar everyday objects - rather than creepy humanoid forms - acted as the Trojan horse, and succeeded in bringing robots into the domestic sphere. This had been done to some extent before: the Atari video game console mimicked domestic objects (wood-veneer inlays) and mated with the familiar and thoroughly domestic television set, smoothing its transition from the seedy arcade to the family livingroom. The anonymous black dots and cylinders that house most standalone virtual assistants are a step further along this progression. The domestic robot was decentralised and subtly dispersed around the home, across our numerous devices, as a ubiquitous service. Embodiment is no longer necessary in our post-industrial era: manual tasks are performed either by cheap human labour (a persistent feature of late-capitalist society) or bespoke machine automation, leaving domestic robots free to perform more useful mental labour (choosing dinner music or finding recipes), or to serve as conduits to the supply chain.
Tumblr media
There are many reasons why Amazon and the other big tech companies want to have a presence in your home. The work of Paul-Olivier Dehaye and others has demonstrated the value, extent, and secrecy of data collection. Data has become the world’s most valuable resource. The new gold rush is on, and we - it is not too self-aggrandizing to say - are the gold. Advertisements for Amazon’s new Echo and Echo Plus focus specifically on children, seeking - like Facebook’s cradle-to-grave timeline - to gather data on individuals across every stage of life. ‘Kids today’, said David Limp (senior VP in charge of Echo devices), ‘will grow up never knowing a day they couldn’t talk to their houses.’ Except they’re not talking to their houses, they’re talking directly to Amazon.
It is a clever marketing trick referring to Alexa or Siri as a) part of the family or b) synonymous with the home itself. Historically, of course, slaves and live-in domestic servants were often treated this way, being ‘given’ the surnames of their owners. But they obviously fell short of being true family: they were treated not as family but as family possessions, chattels bound together with other property. These moves - naming, possessing, adopting - signal domestication, in the same way that you might consider a dog part of the family, even giving it your family surname to suggest benign ownership, but would not name the deer that wanders through your garden. Alexa and other virtual assistants are different in one important sense, which is that they maintain a primary connection to their true master, the corporation. They are not family, or even family property, but rather family spies. (This is at the heart of their designation not actually as a device but as a service controlled by the provider.)
From the business standpoint the case for wanting robots in every home is clear enough: it is the domestication of capitalism, strengthening our emotional connection to consumption and allowing it to pervade every corner of our lives. But why did we finally invite the wolf inside? The answer must be convenience; and, at last, a degree of comfortable familiarity, an overcoming of the uncanny. The mobile phone now feels to many people like a natural extension of their body and even mind. The fixed or standalone presence of an AI-based helper in the home, the modern domestic robot, is only a short step beyond Siri, if at all.
To return to the fundamental questions:
Is it good? For whom? And in whose interest?
In Part 2 we’ll continue the discussion through the analogy of animal domestication.

Rules:
1. Post the rules 2. Answer the questions given to you by the tagger 3. Write 11 questions of your own 4. And tag 11 people
I was tagged by @onceabluemoonwrites
1. What is your second favourite fandom?
Umm.... I’m not certain? I don’t really rank the fandoms I’m in, so I don’t have a “second favorite”. I have several favorites, each of which hold a special place in my heart, but I wouldn’t be able to rank them.
2. Any lesser known shows/manga/anime/books everybody needs to know about?
GHOST HUNT AND NURARIHYON NO MAGO.
Ghost Hunt has to be my favorite supernatural horror anime ever, bar maybe Tokyo Ghoul. It follows the story of Taniyama Mai as she becomes the assistant to Shibuya “Naru the Narcissist” Kazuya, young psychic researcher and professional Ghost Hunter. They, along with a wacky cast consisting of a medium, a pritest, a preistess, a monk, and an omnyouji, solve a variety of different cases of the supernatural. It’s an awesome show, and the amount of research the author of the novels put into everything is crazy. Most of the show is accurate to real life psychic research, which is something that really impresses me. It’s not afraid to touch on issues that other shows wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole, either. All in all, I highly recommend it, and send you off to watch (or read!) it, with a warning to stay away from the dub. Mai’s voice in the dub is really annoying.
Nurarihyon no Mago is another really awesome one that I really wish people would watch. It follows the story of Nura Rikuo, the mostly human grandson of the yokai Nurarihyon, and heir to Nurarihyon’s clan, the largest yokai yakuza in all of Japan. The issue? Rikuo wants nothing to do with his yokai blood, preferring to stick to the human side of things. Through a series of events, Rikuo learns to accept who and what he is. It’s an awesome series with lots of references to japanese folklore and traditions, and I wholeheartedly recommend that you read it as soon as you can.
3. Ghibli or Disney?
Ghibli all the way.
4. Why Ghibli/Disney?
I’ve always loved the way that Ghibli animates things. Their movies are always so beautiful to see, it’s like watching a work of art in motion. But more than that, the type of story they animate appeals to me more than Disney. I would much rather watch a movie about a young hat maker cursed into being an old woman fall in love with a wizard than watch a movie about a princess. Disney movies are great, I’m not going to deny that, but they’ve always been aimed more at a younger audience, which makes them awkward to watch now that I’m older. Ghibli movies have never had that stigma for me, and since their stories are the ones I tend to like more... Well. There’s not much more to say, is there?
5. Favorite flower?
I don’t have one? I don’t really have favorites with that sort of thing, but if I really had to pick, the I’d say chrysanthemum.
6. What makes you ship something?
Ohhh that’s a difficult question to answer. I ship different things for different reasons, usually becuase someone made me see that their dynamic works in a relationship. I don’t ship that many things, actually, and there are only two ships I can think off of the top of my head that I ever had a moment where I went “Wow. Those two. I ship them.” Those ships were 1827 and TodoDeku.
I had a moment, when reading the manga for KHR, where I was reading that scene in the Shimon arc where Hibari was fighting Adel. Tsuna was asking Hibari why he was fighting so hard, for Tsuna, and Hibari’s response is what made me ship them. “It is because there is a sky that the clouds can float freely. And someday, I will bite even the sky itself.” It just... hit me. Tsuna gives Hibari a home. He gives Hibari a place to come back to and rest whenever Hibari gets tired or bored of wandering around. Tsuna doesn’t try to constrain HIbari, or try to tell him what to do. He respects Hibari and his boundaries, and that line-- I’m not sure how to explain it. It just clicked, and I’ve shipped them ever since.
TodoDeku was the second ship where I had a moment like that. Before the sports festival arc, I never really noticed Todoroki. He was just one of the background characters, and I wasn’t even able to remember his name half the time. I was too focused on other things to pay attention to him. Then the sports festival arc started, and he came to the forefront of things, and I learned more about his past, and that’s when I started liking him. I didn’t ship him with anyone, but I liked him. But then-- “It’s your power, isn’t it?” That line. That scene. With the flashbacks and the fire appearing and Endeavor in the background and Izuku’s expression and Todoroki’s reaction--All of it. It was glorious. And that is what made me ship TodoDeku. Even more so with the interactions they had after that--with Stain’s fight and everything else, I just--adkfgfksyfef.
I have other things I ship, too. I ship HashiMada because that’s the way they’re written, really. It’s an epic bromance that borders on romance, and it’s not hard to believe they could have been lovers. I ship KaneHide because they support each other and help each other and mean so much to each other. I doubt there are very many things they wouldn’t do for one another. I ship Rikuo and Kana. I ship Meliodas and Elizabeth. I ship Madoka and Homura. I ship Kaito and Shinichi The main theme in all this? I ship healthy ships. Ships where they build each other up and support one another and help each other overcome their fears. That doesn't mean I don’t have unhealthy ships too. I’ve shipped things for no other reason than the dynamic is fucked up, because those ships are real too, and sometimes I like indulging that dark part of me. But for the most part, the reason why I ship something is because it’s healthy.
7. Or WHO makes you ship things?
@blackkatmagic has made me ship things. They introduced me to the ship that is MadaTobi and I haven't been able to drag myself away from. @onceabluemoonwrites made me ship DinoXanxus. The author of “Stranger with a Gun” (I can’t for the life of me remember who that is) made me ship 8018.
8. Favorite book?
Difficult to say! I love the Harry Potter series, because that was pretty much my childhood. The Hobbit holds a special place in my heart because my dad used to read parts of it to me before I went to bed. I love the Dresden Files for it’s weird sense of humor. I love House of Many Ways, and the Anita Blake series has some really good books in it, too! I’m not sure which one I would call my favorite.
9. Most Annoying Sibling Award?
I have two siblings, a younger brother and a younger sister, and out of the both of them, I’d have to say my sister is the more annoying of the two. I get along fairly well with both of them, but my sister is the more outgoing of the two of them, and thus the more likely one to come annoy me. I still love them both, though.
10. Wooden floors vs. linoleum.
Wooden. More because it’s familiar than any other reason.
11. Who are you in the Cinnamon roll meme?
I’d be stuck somewhere between looks like a cinnamon roll but could actually kill you and looks like a cinnamon roll and is actually a cinnamon roll. I’m general a nice person but if you go after anyone I care about then no one will find the body.
I never know who to tag for these sorts of things.... Lets just say I tag anyone and everyone who sees this post. If you feel like doing it, just say I tagged you!
My questions:
1. Dogs, Cats, both, or neither?
2. What’s your favorite Pokemon?
3. You have two weeks until the end of the world. What do you do?
4. Who was the worst teacher you’ve ever had?
5. What was the most frustrating thing you’ve ever had to do?
6. If you had one wish, what would that wish be?
7. What’s your favorite movie?
8. What’s your least favorite game?
9. Flying or super strength?
10. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
11. What’s your plan for the Zombie Apocalypse?

7 tips for improving your cat photography skills at home
This tutorial is part of the “No Place Like Home” Campaign. We’ve partnered with some of our Licensing contributors to create these “conscious living” tutorials and Quests to encourage you to pick up your camera, maybe learn a new skill, and continue to do what you love despite these difficult times.
This tutorial was created by Taya Iv, a top Licensing Contributor based in Belarus. She is well known for creating beautiful self-portraits that elicit strong emotions from viewers.
We want to see your pet photography skills! So sharpen your skills and submit your pet photos to the Pets at Home: Cats Quest and you could win $100 US.
I take a lot of photos of pets. My favorite model is my cat Mimi, who’s equally photogenic and stubborn. It can be challenging to take photos of your cat, especially when the lighting isn’t ideal and you can’t go outside.
I know this is something that many cat owners struggle with—how do you take professional photos of your cat without ending up ignored or scratched? Is it possible to make your pet look flattering when you’re working with simple indoor lighting? The answer, of course, is yes!
I want to share a few simple but effective tips that can help you elevate your cat photography.
Catch the cat’s attention with their favorite toy, bed, or treats
You probably know your pet better than anyone else. Think of their quirks, likes, and dislikes. Where is their favorite place to sleep? When are they the least grumpy? The stranger the quirk, the more interesting your photos will turn out!
For example, my cat loves my guitar bag. She instantly runs up to me when I unzip it. No matter where I put it, she’ll jump in and get comfortable. This gives me room for a lot of beautiful photo opportunities.
Don’t force your cat to do anything. Create opportunities for them so they can forget that the camera is even there. If they’re in a natural and familiar environment, they will feel much more comfortable in the presence of a camera.
Use lasers or food to direct your cat’s gaze
Since pets can’t always be directed, it’s difficult to make them look straight at the camera. Again, this is where your expert pet knowledge comes in! Does your cat react positively to certain noises or movements? Use this to your advantage to naturally direct your cat’s gaze.
Try having someone point a cat-friendly laser pointer somewhere around your lens or even dangle a treat directly above the lens. (No matter what kind of laser you use, don’t point it at your cat’s eyes or body. Avoid reflective surfaces, too!)
Put their favorite bed next to a large window
My cat has several beds that she favors depending on the season. Yours probably has a favorite spot as well. If it’s a portable bed, move it closer to a window. This will give you lots of opportunities to take photos while your pet rests or sleeps.
Natural window light is perfect for soft pet portraits. If your pet faces the window, even better! You’ll be able to take advantage of natural highlights and shadows. Both of these look very flattering in both pet and portrait.
If your cat is jumpy, use a silent shutter
This is also a tip to keep in mind if your cat is resting or sleeping. If your camera isn’t intrusive, your pet is likely to have positive associations with it.
A silent shutter isn’t always an option. If yours is very loud, try shooting from a distance. You can use a zoom lens to give your cat some extra space.
Use a fast shutter speed and a high ISO for action photos
If your cat is active, you can take lots of eye-catching action photos of them on the move. You can play with them yourself or ask an assistant to do the work for you. Switch to a fast shutter speed so that every detail is sharp in your final results.
Let’s talk about ISO numbers for a second. The bigger they are, the more noise they add to your photos. Scary, right? Not really. Most of today’s cameras can process high ISO numbers without damaging the results. Avoid very high numbers, but don’t be afraid to move up sometimes.
A fast shutter speed and a high ISO will let you take sharp and well-lit photos indoors. Also, a large aperture (e.g. f/2.0) can also help you capture more light.
Use limited light to make your cat look extra adorable
Cats look unbelievably cute in the dark because of their dilated pupils. The less light there is, the more intense their eyes will look. If you surprise them with a treat during your photoshoot, they’ll basically look like Puss in Boots from Shrek.
Limited light isn’t as challenging as it sounds. As I mentioned previously, it’s okay to use an ISO number that’s higher than what you’re used to. Overcoming the fear of photo noise can help you take very, very adorable photos of your cat.
You can use simple artificial light to control the lighting in your photoshoot. A small lamp can make a big difference. Point it in different directions to see which angle makes your cat look the most flattering.
To catch your cat’s attention, give them a few treats or play with them.
Shoot for a few minutes at a time
Cat photography requires a lot of patience and understanding. If you notice your pet losing interest in your presence, put your camera away. I know this can be frustrating, especially if you’re about to get a great shot, but it’s a fantastic way to strengthen your patience.
Slowly introduce your camera to your pet. You can shoot every day, but make sure you limit your photoshoots to a maximum of 10-20 minutes. Even though my cat is still sassy and stubborn, she seems to enjoy being in front of the camera because I don’t intrude.
Last but not least, make sure you reward your pet at the end of your photoshoot!
Cat photography doesn’t have to be difficult and doesn’t have to end with painful scratches on your arms and face. If you approach it with curiosity and patience, you’re likely to get a lot of beautiful shots in the process.
Make sure you experiment with different lighting setups (no expensive equipment necessary), angles, and rewards. The more photos you take, the closer you’ll get to getting that incredible shot you’ve always dreamed of adding to your portfolio.

Then you may be out of your thoughts with fear what’s inflicting this habits change in your dog.
Fortunately, I’m right here that will help you perceive why your dog is appearing bizarre.

I’ve some strong guesses about why your pet may be appearing unusual and hiding.
But you need to perceive that change in habits and hiding have many possible causes.
So, what I’m giving you might be instructions that will help you slender down what the issue is.
#1 Illness
The very first thing that involves my thoughts each time somebody says that their dog is appearing unusual and hiding is an sickness.
That’s as a result of dogs instinctively hide whenever they’re in pain to guard themselves from predators.
In addition to this, some canine don’t need to be round folks once they really feel unwell.
Instead, these canine desire to put someplace darkish and secure, for instance, below your mattress or within the closet.
Don’t freak out simply but in case your dog is appearing unusual and hiding. Observe your pooch.
If Rover is ailing, you’ll discover different well being warning indicators similar to lethargy, lack of urge for food, change in coat’s look, and fever.
In addition to this, while you’re a pet mother or father, you develop one thing like a maternal intuition. For instance, I at all times can inform that my pooch is feeling worse for the damage by the best way he strikes or appears to be like at me. So belief your guts.
#2 Fear of Fireworks
Another motive why your dog is appearing unusual and hiding are fireworks. Dogs are delicate to loud noises and vibrant, flashing lights.
Fireworks are usually not one thing that happens often in your dog’s life. It’s an occasion which occurs a few instances a 12 months.
It’s scary as a result of it’s unpredictable, and your dog doesn’t perceive what’s happening on the market.
As such, fireworks are likely to scare canine mindless, particularly if it’s your dog’s first publicity to illuminations.
It’s commonplace for a dog to spend the entire New Year’s Eve hiding below the mattress or the closet as soon as the festivities start.
The dangerous factor is that your dog may proceed to be terrified of loud noises for weeks or months after the preliminary occasion. As a end result, Rover may sprint to his hiding place each time one thing noisy is occurring in the home.
To ease your dog’s fears and assist them cope with fireworks, it’s best to shut all of the home windows and draw the curtains to dam the lights and the sounds.
youtube
#3 Storm Phobias
Besides fireworks, canine typically have storm phobias. They don’t just like the sound of thunders or the brilliant flashes of lightning, so that they tempo, pant, whine, or cover throughout a thunderstorm.
Moreover, some canine may act unusual and cover impulsively as a result of they’re sensing an approaching storm. Such fearful habits may proceed for some time after the storm has handed.
During storms, it’s best to present your dog with a secure place to cover and be close to him to supply emotional assist.
Some specialists additionally counsel enjoying white noise or turning up the TV to drown the ranging storm.
#4 Traumatic Experience
Think in regards to the days earlier than your dog began appearing unusual and hiding. Did one thing occur that would have traumatized your dog?
For instance, a combat with one other dog throughout your every day stroll otherwise you unintentionally stepping on their tails.
Furthermore, typically canine unintentionally break one thing when they’re alone at dwelling. If they get harm within the course of, it may clarify your dog’s bizarre habits.
So something that would startle your dog badly could make your pooch fearful and prone to cover
In addition to this, canine typically cover each time they get reminded of a traumatic expertise or an abusive state of affairs from their previous.
Angry voices, tensions in the home, a specific scent, or a hand gesture may scare an abused dog simply.
Once you uncover what’s the set off, you may work on desensitizing your dog to the stimulus. Or be sure that your dog doesn’t get uncovered to them.
youtube
#5 Anxiety and Stress
Another motive why your dog may be appearing unusual and hiding is anxiousness and stress.
Dogs don’t prefer it when issues change as a result of they don’t perceive what is occurring. It looks as if the tip of the world is coming, and the one logical resolution to your pet is to cover.
Not solely massive modifications stress canine. Some canine may get anxious since you’ve thrown away their favourite sofa or moved a chunk of furnishings.
You working late or lack of sufficient every day train may also make your pooch anxious.
To keep away from stressing your dog, it’s best to at all times introduce modifications slowly each time doable. In a number of circumstances of hysteria and stress, your pooch goes to want medicines to assist him settle down.
#6 Strangers
Not all canine are folks pleasant. Some are cautious of individuals due to earlier traumatic experiences or lack of correct socialization. Others are suspicious and alert by nature.
If your pooch will get nervous round different folks, having strangers in your home may clarify why your dog is appearing bizarre and hiding.
In these conditions, it’s higher to depart your pooch alone in the intervening time.
Work on socializing your grownup dog when Rover is calm, and you may management the state of affairs. Then you may invite your folks once more and enable Rover to get used to them.

Finally, typically, canine act unusual and cover as a result of they need some peace and quiet.
Your furbaby may be uninterested in all the eye you’ve been giving him, or your kids may be getting an excessive amount of for Rover to deal with.
In these circumstances, your dog may search the consolation of a hiding place in order that he can have a nap with out somebody disturbing him.
A dog who’s appearing unusual and hiding will not be at all times a motive so that you can panic. Just like people, canine want area once they’re unhappy, apprehensive, or anxious.
However, hiding is also an indication of sickness, particularly if it continues for greater than a day or two.

Shelter Assessment Rating: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior History: Behavior during intake: Simba came in with a muzzle on. Previous owner explained that new people make Simba nervous and tense and she uses the muzzle as a precaution because he has snapped at her and other people in the past. He tail was low but it was wagging. His body was tense. He allowed me to scan him without growling. Date of Intake: 5/22/2019 Spay/Neuter Status: Not Applicable Basic Information:: Simba is a 3 yrs old male large breed mix. Previous owner has had him since he was a puppy but can no longer keep him due to not have the time to care for him properly. Previously lived with:: 3 adults, 1 child, dog, cat, guinea pigs How is this dog around strangers?: Simba is fearful of new people and will growl. How is this dog around children?: Simba lived with a 7 yr. old child and was relaxed and playful. He would play from a gentle to somewhat rough manner. When meeting new children, he is usually tolerant but he would need time to warm up before interacting. How is this dog around other dogs?: Simba lived with a male small breed dog. He was relaxed around him. When meeting new dogs, he needs time to get comfortable with them before interacting. How is this dog around cats?: Simba lived with a cat and was respectful but would also sometimes chase the cat and play somewhat rough. Resource guarding:: Previous owners stated that Simba doesn’t have any behavioral issues. Simba isn’t bothered when any food, treat, or toy is taken from him or when he is pushed or pulled off furniture. Simba enjoys having baths and isn’t bothered by having his coat brushed or nails trimmed. Simba is afraid when an unfamiliar person approaches the home, yard, previous owner, or a family member and he would bark and growl. Bite history:: Simba does not have a bite history. Housetrained:: Yes Energy level/descriptors:: Medium Other Notes:: Simba had lived with guinea pigs and was gentle and respectful. Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No For a New Family to Know: Simba is described as friendly, affectionate, fearful, anxious and playful. When in the home, Simba is the type to follow you around seeking attention or be in the same room. Simba likes all kinds of toys and he likes to play fetch, chase, & tug. Simba was kept mostly indoors and was fed dry & wet dog food. According to previous owner, Simba is house-trained and would rarely have any accidents. Simba usually goes to the bathroom on the grass, cement sidewalk, gravel/dirt, and wee-wee pads. When left alone in the home or yard, Simba would be well-behaved. Simba knows commands sit & come. For exercise, he enjoyed slow & brisk walks & running with the previous owner. On the leash, Simba can pull hard lightly and when he was never let off the leash. Behavior Assessment Date of intake:: 5/22/2019 Spay/Neuter status:: No Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Owner surrender Previously lived with:: 3 adults, 1 child (age 7), dog, cat, guinea pigs Behavior toward strangers:: Fearful, growls Behavior toward children:: Relaxed, playful, rough with resident child Behavior toward dogs:: Relaxed with resident dog Behavior toward cats:: Respectful of resident cat but would chase at times Resource guarding:: None reported Bite history:: None reported Housetrained:: Yes Energy level/descriptors:: Friendly, affectionate, fearful, anxious and playful with a medium energy level Date of assessment:: 5/27/2019 Summary:: Due to Simba's overall level of discomfort upon handling, we feel he is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time. Date of intake:: 5/22/2019 Summary:: Tense, allowed all handling Date of initial:: 5/22/2019 Summary:: Tense, allowed handling ENERGY LEVEL:: Simba is reported to have a medium energy level in his previous home environment. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 5/26 When approaching the kennel Simba was sitting on his bedding and barking at the handler. When opening the door he laid down and began hard barking but stopped once he was out of the kennel and brought to the yard. When in the yard he didn't accept treats on the floor or from the handlers hand. When petting him gently while the handlers were sitting he allowed petting some petting though escalated to hard barking at one point. One handler attempted to move away towards the other side of the yard and when the handler was halfway there Simba hard barked and charged at her. He tried to stop short of making contact but he kept moving forward and crashed the side of his face into their legs. He was immediately leashed and put in his kennel. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Simba's overall level of fear, we feel he would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Because Simba remains highly fearful when interacting with strangers and has been observed to escalate rapidly to higher level warnings and threats of aggression, we feel he might be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended as well as guidance from a professional/qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: Simba has escalated to hard barking upon approach as well as direct contact, his owner also reports him to growl at strangers.
