MSA + Assassination Classroom There was another ghost.
And boy howdy was Arthur tempted to ignore it and do nothing. The first ghost they'd run into had turned their well dissevered vacation into turning a mountain into a haunt and possibly adopting Vivi's distant cousin. Given his druthers he'd avoid this one if not for one thing.
It was following a kid around. Constantly.
That kind of attention from a ghost was devotion. If it was to protect the person, that was great. If it was vengeful though...Arthur couldn't take the chance.
Surrepticiously walking past the student in question, Arthur grabbed the blond ghost and kept going, dragging him away.
"Hey wait, you can see me? You can touch me?" The ghost seemed more flabberghasted than enraged, which boded well.
"Yes." Arthur answered once they were away from other people. "now want to tell me why you're following that kid around?" "I just...I want to help him. It's my fault. But I can't do anything and no one else can even see me." Ah, guilt. That was a motivator Arthur knew far too well. "What's your fault. Maybe I can help you fix it?" "I ruined his life." the ghost bemoaned. "All because I couldn't take it anymore. If I'd just stuck it out instead of jumping..."
"Were you close to him?" Arthur asked softly.
Surprisingly the ghost shook his head. "We'd never met, but his father was my teacher in middle school. When he found out I'd jumped because of bullying he took it...he took it bad. Real bad."
"Bad enough to abused his own son?" Arthur's voice turned harsh.
"Physically I don't think so. Mentally and emotionally though-" the ghost shuddered. "Asano-sensei believed it was his fault I jumped, because he taught me to be a good student instead of being strong enough to survive. Strength -physical, academic, psychological - was all that mattered. No loosing allowed. All of this, E-Class. the discrimination, the fact that Gakushu-kun only knows how to react to people via manipulation, it's all my fault." The ghost sobbed.
"No!" Arthur said firmly. "Jumping...Killing yourself wasn't the answer, but you are not responsible for a grown man's inability to cope with grief. If you didn't set him off, something else would have. " Fuck it, in for a penny, in for a pound. "Me and my friends, we're going to stop this. We'll save the students and the teacher's kid. Promise."
"You can't." The ghost sobbed. "Nobody can win against Asano-sensei. Nobody!"
"Well, call me Odysseus, Kid, because he is going to lose big time. I know things he doesn't and faced terrors beyond human reckoning. If those haven't broken me, nothing will."
"You can see me." The ghost said again, but this time it was as though he was realizing something. That if this person before him could touch ghosts, what else could he do.
"My name is Ikeda Rikuto," the ghost bowed. "I put myself in your care."
"Kingsmen Arthur," Arthur bowed back. "And you might want to think about what you'd say to your old teacher if given the chance, because that chance may very soon be coming up."

I would like to mention as a scene of discussion the time when Koro-sensei brought Karma and Nagisa to the new movie release in Hawaii (from Japan, so a direct, over-ocean flight there and back). And how Karma, midair, said something like, “but what if we tried to stab you on the way back?”
That scenario reminds me of a tumblr fable in which a scorpion goes to the river and tries to cross. There are multiple variations, but usually a toad swims over and offers the scorpion a ride across the river. Often times the scorpion climbs onto the toad’s back, and they set off. Partway through, the waves are too tough for the frog to swim smoothly and it becomes difficult for the scorpion to stay afloat. So the scorpion stings the toad out of fear of being drowned by the frog. Then they both drown. Below the cut, I will describe how these two scenarios make sense of each other to me. Spoiler warnings for the entire series of Ass Class (because I just finished the anime and cried about it).
In the situation described above, the frog seems to be Koro-sensei, leaving Nagisa and Karma to be the scorpion. He offers them a passage across the Pacific “river” with seemingly no benefit to himself. He also exposes his vulneratilities to them during that passage. Those two were held directly next to his heart, his ultimate weakness (although they didn’t know it yet), and he had just denied Karma the satisfaction of clocking his ultimate weakness (his protectiveness over his--over Aguri’s--students). However, the little scorpions were too insecure to use a method that would result in their own deaths as well (due to that method being banned). They hadn’t yet learned to wield their stings creatively with courage and determination. Karma, although cruel and standoffish, is very ADHD and a lot of his problems stem from being bored in class. With Koro-sensei to teach and guide him to develop his own talents, he learned to direct his stinger at other people for a greater good. Instead of egging houses he probably would have put tabasco sauce in the entire school cafeteria or ended up training the local dogs to shit all over the principal’s shiny car. Things that, while not illegal, are definitely disruptive towards the entire school. Nagisa on the other hand, definitely has more caution about the assassination after having failed multiple times. He seems to prefer to strike knowing all or most of the opponent’s weak points, in contrast to Karma’s seemingly impulsive preemptive attacks.
I seem to be getting off track. Anyways. With these roles established, let’s watch some hypothetical scenarios play out. The scorpions (mainly Karma) sting the frog while the frog is leaving the shore. They can return to land safely, however the frog is much faster than them in water and evades the attack. They end up swimming back to shore, disgruntled at having wasted the trip. Clearly they wanted to experience something interesting with Koro-sensei, but their inability to read the room and situation has left them stranded on their side of the “river.” Unbeknownst to them, the frog wouldn’t let them get wet and would instead gently place them down on the ground before dodging at speeds faster than the light barrier. For this frog values those particular scorpions moreso than even his own life.
Second scenario: the scorpions sting the frog halfway across the river, but they can’t survive the current and drown. This one is even more interesting because again, Koro-sensei wouldn’t let them fall to their deaths even though they were right next to his critical weakness. I fully believe he would have done his utmost to give them a life raft and save them from fall damage even while they killed him. Then the anime would become a game of chance and waiting for some coast guard to come along and rescue them (which, assuming most of the earth’s military tracking satellites were watching the trip, would not be longer than two days).
Third scenario: The scorpions make the journey across the river, without stinging the frog, until the return trip. This is even more interesting because the scorpions would have been stranded in a foreign land, where they did not speak any of the languages, with an improvised life raft and the corpse of the frog. The very same frog that many older and wiser and more potent scorpions all aimed to poison in their stead. However, with the frog so dedicated to their personal, academic, and emotional needs, no other scorpions can even get close enough to stab.
Some may argue that Koro-sensei is instead the scorpion, which I agree with. For most of his life until his octo-apotheosis (apoctotheosis?), he was the scorpion. He killed for fun, he killed out of instinct, he killed to meet his basic needs. During the lab, all his needs were met, he was (mostly) unharmed, the company was good, and he knew killing would be swiftly punished by his captors. Hence, he bade his time and restrained his scorpion instincts until he was ready to undergo apoctotheosis. Then he avenged all the petty slights he’d been saving up. Aguri was a frog. She was just there to have a good time. She was kind of heart and unable to protect herself or her family’s interests. She was killed in the grudge war between scorpions.
Frogs and scorpions aren’t separate roles, by the way. Every assassin has two blades, some people tap into their frog or scorpion side more. I am getting way off topic. After apoctotheosis, out of respect and debt to Aguri for keeping him company and making his life worthwhile, he took on the role of teacher for her students. He claimed that frog role and tried to take it in stride, however his start was pretty rocky. A few scorpions cried because they couldn’t sting him and he learned how to teach while they learned how to learn. There’s so much duality in this show and I love it. The teacher and student. The assassin and target. The living and death. The earth and moon. The A Class and the E Class. The teacher and principal. Nagisa’s blade and Nagisa’s second blade (LOL). They all mirror each other in so many ways. But part of the reason I enjoy this show is that the first student returns to haunt Koro-sensei and his class.
The name “2.0″ seems a bit rude even though he did steal the title of Shinigami from Koro-sensei, so I will call him faded blue. I love the design team for giving him faded blue hair because not only does he fade out of the public consciousness, but the victories Koro-sensei felt while teaching him paled in comparison to the victories of teaching Class E. As a scorpion, Koro-sensei wasn’t well-equipped to teach his first student. When he embraced his apoctotheosis (I will never get over that word), he embraced Aguri’s frog nature as well. He leaned into the idea of finally doing some good and set the kiddos an impossible task. He also brought with him a loooot of contracts (because scorpions usually abide by contracts), and concern for his students’ well-being. However, that concern must be disguised because the second any of them picks up on it, he’ll have to keep saving them and he doesn’t want to deal with all that constantly. So he learns to redirect the kids and guide them towards exploring their passions and interests. He gives them slightly less impossible goals and keeps going. All this time, his tie with the crescent moon is by his side. The crescent moon was formed the day Aguri died and to me, I believe it represents her presence. The tides of knowledge keep turning and her legacy is helping Koro-sensei and the kiddos navigate them together. The hole in the moon is the hole in Aguri’s chest, ever-present and haunting. Yet strangely beautiful.
It is fitting, then, for Aguri’s symbol, the crescent moon, to be placed closest to Koro-sensei’s heart at all times.
