To my mind, Misha tends to be a very literal poet. Like the best writers, he cleaves closely to the realm of the senses, of everyday moments, referencing familiar objects, sights, sounds. In reading a Misha Collins poem, I stay grounded in the imagery and try to avoid reading *into* the work–I read *out of* the work. I try to get out of the way and let the poem speak to me.

The narrator here is Misha, not a fictional character or a persona. What’s interesting is that this “date” he’s remembering takes place when he is an adult, so it’s not a rite of passage or a coming-of-age story. Since he is an adult, it’s striking that he reacts to the man’s interest in him in the exact same way that a teenager might: “He likes me, but does he *really* like me, you know, in *that* way?”

His male companion is clearly physically robust and fit, because Misha is secretly pleased that he can not only keep up on the hike, but he is every bit as strong and able as his friend. Furthermore, his friend complains of aches and pains and the heat, and Misha is actually doing better–in fact, he teases his friend for complaining. It’s a 12-mile hike, and Misha is feeling fine, and he’s pleased by his own ability to match his friend’s pace and even to surpass it. It’s a bit of male competitiveness that asserts itself here, just because they’re guys. And that’s what guys do.

The attraction is mutual. In this mating dance, the naked swim in the woods is a time-honored courtship move. The enjoyment of each other, of the water, of the freedom, privacy, and primal pleasure, is a satisfying moment for both of them.

The ride home afterwards is a chance for his friend to “show off” his new car–another classic male bonding experience which, in this case, is centered on the car’s superior sound system. Their shared love of music–Misha tells us they had played with the idea of being in a band together–indicates that this relationship has real potential. The two men are equals; they’re competitive, they like each other–in *that* way–and their bodies are comfortable inhabiting each other’s spaces.

And it’s no accident that Misha concludes the poem by saying his friend is going to burn him a mix CD. Because sharing a mixtape–I mean, a mix CD–is another time-honored courtship ritual: The personal choices of music made by the giver, the custom-made artifact that conveys secret messages to the recipient. 

A token of affection that you get to take home and listen to in private. 

They burned for you.

I mean, they burned *it* for you. And it’s yours forever.

Because it’s a gift. 

You get to keep those.

The idea behind a "Gold Star Gay" or "Gold Star Lesbian" is that the person in question has never had sex with someone of the opposite gender.

A "Gold Star" lesbian, for example, would be a woman who has never had sex with a man.

A lot of people don't like the term because it sorta takes a page from virginity-purity culture and assigns social value to sex- if never boning down with a dude means a woman is a better, purer lesbian, then how is someone who has supposed to feel about themselves? That they're a lesser gay? That they're fake? Or 'Tainted'?

It's one of those things that inches a little towards TERF rhetoric- that people of different genders are Intrinsically, fundamentally different from the ground up, and that there are intangible traits that can rub off and infect you like cooties

(which has no basis in reality, but encourages their belief that trans women are predatory and trans men are victims- cause 'nature designed us like this' or whatever)

And then that kinda slips into the rabbit hole of "divine female energy" and "toxic male auras" that all just kinda oroboros-es right on back around into "women soft gentle mommy, man strong stoic hunter" type crap

So like. Your first friend probably meant it in a kind of innocuous way, or like a statement about themselves, and your other friend may have. Seen where the roots go, as it were
