AUS vs SL : Australia’s ODI Form in Shambles After Humiliating Loss to Sri Lanka

SL vs AUS : Sri Lanka Thrashes Australia by 174 Runs to Seal Historic ODI Series Win
Kusal Mendis' Century and Wellalage’s Four-Wicket Haul Lead Sri Lanka to Record Victory
Sri Lanka secured a dominant 2-0 whitewash over Australia, registering their biggest ODI win against the visitors with a 174-run victory in the second and final ODI at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday, February 14.
Mendis’ Heroics Power Sri Lanka to 281/4
After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka put up an impressive 281/4 in their 50 overs, led by a magnificent century from Kusal Mendis (101 off 11 fours). Captain Charith Asalanka (78)* and Nishan Madushka (51) added crucial runs to set up a challenging total.
Australia Collapses for 107 in 24.2 Overs
Defending 281, Sri Lanka’s bowlers ran riot as they bowled Australia out for just 107 runs. Dunith Wellalage starred with four wickets (4/35 in 7.2 overs), while Asitha Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga chipped in with two wickets each.
Australia’s Struggles Continue Before Champions Trophy
Skipper Steve Smith was the top scorer, with Josh Inglis (22) and Travis Head making minor contributions. Shockingly, no other Australian batter managed to reach double digits. The visitors were missing key players, including Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis, who are set to miss the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 starting February 19.
Sri Lanka’s Fourth Consecutive ODI Series Win
This victory marks Sri Lanka’s fourth consecutive ODI series win, following a 2-0 triumph against India last year. Speaking after the match, captain Asalanka credited the team’s consistency:
"There is no secret mantra to success, but scoring big and supporting the bowlers is key. Australia bowled well, but today was our day."
Sri Lanka had also won the series opener by 49 runs in Galle, making this historic whitewash even more special.

Head, glenn maxwell come in among five Australia changes after Sri Lanka bat

In their last game before the Champions Trophy begins next week, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, and Glenn Maxwell will provide Australia with a significant boost in batting power. Cooper Connolly, Alex Carey, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Ellis, and Spencer Johnson were left out for the second ODI in Colombo, which also featured legspinner Tanveer Sangha and quick Ben Dwarshuis.
All-rounder Aaron Hardie went up to No. 6 and Maxwell was ranked at number seven, while Jake Fraser-McGurk moved down to No. 3 with Head to open with Matthew Short.
In the series decider, Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss once more and chose to bat on a dry pitch. At the same location, Asalanka orchestrated a spectacular comeback with an incredible century, and Sri Lanka won the first match by 49 runs.
Despite winning eight of their last 12 ODI matches, Sri Lanka has maintained their impressive streak and will not be competing in the Champions Trophy.
Asalanka replaced Avishka Fernando at the top of the order with Nishan Madushka with the hopes of improving their batting performance in this game.
Australia was significantly undermanned for both this series and the Champions Trophy that followed. For a variety of reasons, they are without Marcus Stoinis, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins.
Throughout the day, it was predicted to be sunny and humid.
Sri Lanka: Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando, Pathum Nissanka, Nishan Madushka, Kusal Mendis (worker), Kamindu Mendis, and Charith Asalanka (capt).
Australia: Josh Inglis (week), Aaron Hardie, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Adam Zampa, Tanveer Sangha, Travis Head, Matt Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Steve Smith (captain).

Usman Khawaja slams ton as Sri Lanka continue to toil
Usman Khawaja's (119*) 16th Test century helped Australia maintain their dominance on the first Test's opening day in Galle. Steve Smith, who finished the second session undefeated at 64, was a good companion to the left-hander in a 126-run partnership at the fourth wicket. Australia scored 116 runs in a perfect session for the visitors, taking no wickets.
Smith cleared the ropes and handed over command to Prabath Jayasuriya as soon as the lunch break was over. With great defensive confidence, the two batters moved forward or returned to the crease with ease, putting the ball in the gaps. Additionally, they attacked any high-pitched deliveries made by the spinners from Sri Lanka. After a difficult beginning session, it made the tourists even more irate. Similar to that time frame, Sri Lanka lost another chance to review, this time seeing Khawaja's back on 74 as the umpire failed to call a little nick to the 'keeper.
As soon as lunch was finished, Smith untangled the ropes and turned the reins over to Prabath Jayasuriya. The two hitters put the ball in the gaps with ease as they pushed forward or returned to the crease with a great deal of defensive assurance. Furthermore, they attacked any high-pitched deliveries made by Sri Lankan spinners. It further infuriated the tourists after a contentious opening session. Similar to that period, Khawaja's back on 74 gave Sri Lanka another opportunity to review, but the umpire did not call a small nick to the 'keeper.
Smith changed tactics eight overs into the match, taking full advantage of Jeffrey Vandersay's misplaced lines on each side of the stumps with three boundaries. With a flip for four over an empty mid-wicket area against Jayasuriya, he kept making it appear simple. As Khawaja entered his nineties, he proceeded to perform the reverse sweep and then caressed one through extra-cover for four. As Sri Lanka failed to seize opportunities, Khawaja escaped an edge that sailed over the wicketkeeper's head. Before Khawaja got his century with a flick to fine-leg for four, Smith reached his 50th with a single towards mid-wicket. Nothing went the hosts' way, so it was a chaotic session, but it all started with Travis Head in the morning session. After hitting Asitha Fernando for three fours in the first over, he gave Australia a brisk start. In Asitha's third over, Khawaja and Head hit three more boundaries, but Head escaped an LBW call on 23 when the hosts chose not to employ DRS since ball-tracking revealed three reds. Head hit a single down to long-on to get his fifty off just thirty-five balls. Head hit Peiris over his head as Australia started to get daring with a reverse sweep from Khawaja. After giving the tourists a great start, the latter eventually holed out to long-on off Jayasuriya. Khawaja was dropped at slip and survived a few overs after nursing his way to fifty. But after Dhananjaya de Silva managed to hold off Labuschagne on the stroke of lunch, Vandersay scored from the other end in one of Sri Lanka's rare happy moments.
Australia versus. Sri Lanka, brief scores: 261/2 (Usman Khawaja 119*, Steve Smith 64*, Travis Head 57; Jeffrey Vandersay 1-67, Prabath Jaysuriya 1-88).

New Zealand demolish SL despite Maheesh Theekshana's hattrick
In a rain-shortened second ODI in Hamilton, New Zealand won by a resounding 113 runs, capping up the three-match series against Sri Lanka, despite Maheesh Theekshana's hat-trick. Following a long rain delay, the hosts reached 255 for 9 thanks to half-centuries from Mark Chapman (62) and Rachin Ravindra (79), with Theekshana tying up the lower-order. But as the visitors collapsed for a mere 142 in response, neither of the Sri Lankan batsmen, with the exception of Kamindu Mendis, came forward.
Pre-toss showers caused the start of the match to be delayed, thus Sri Lanka decided to take advantage of the conditions by bowling first. However, before the two half-centurions combined for a century stand, they were only able to take Will Young out early in the PowerPlay.
Ravindra and Chapman, who shared 112 runs for the second wicket, both appeared perfect at the crease. Despite their equal aggression, the opener reached his fifty-first run in forty-three deliveries, hitting a six from Wanindu Hasaranga right down the ground. Before Theekshana hit the final ball, New Zealand swept to a comfortable 143 for 1 in the 20th over, with Chapman following shortly after and hitting a maximum off Eshan Malinga.
Ravindra only lasted a short while longer, marking the beginning of the visitors' spin-inspired late comeback. He quickly put the hosts over 150 with three boundaries, but Hasaranga removed him at the end of the 23rd. Before Sri Lanka returned to clip their wings, captain Mitchell Santner's brief appearance of 20 in 15 deliveries, in which he sent Asitha Fernando to the cleaners, nicely matched Daryl Mitchell's run-a-ball of 38. Theekshana completed a hat-trick by dismissing Santner in the very next over, Nathan Smith, and Matt Henry at the beginning of his next and final over. Alongside Hasaranga, he played a crucial role in limiting the hosts, who at one time were certain to hit 280+, to an overall total of 4 for 44 in eight overs.
However, Sri Lanka's problems with the top order persisted for a second game in a row. Jacob Duffy's two early wickets and their captain's run-out put them down to 23 for 4 in the first ODI and 22 for 4 today. From so on, Kamindu fought alone. He led two productive partnerships, scoring 47 runs with Chamindu Wickramasinghe (17 off 27) and 57 runs with Janith Liyanage (22 off 31). But the latter's run-out also occurred at a critical moment to crush any optimism.
In the twenty-fourth over, Kamindu hit consecutive fours against Daryl Mitchell to reach his half-century. But shortly after, on 64, William O'Rourke sent him packing. He was the eighth batsman out of the game, bringing Sri Lanka down to 131 for 8. The towering pacer cleaned up the tail by himself, dismissing the visitors in 31 overs and securing a decisive victory.
Brief scores: Rain forced the match to be truncated to 37 overs per side. New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka 142 all out in 30.2 overs (Kamindu Mendis 64; William O'Rourke 3-32, Jacob Duffy 2-30) by 113 runs with 255/9 in 37 overs (Rachin Ravindra 79, Mark Chapman 62; Maheesh Theekshana 4-44).
