We’re in the home stretch with #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth and we’re switching it up from the action stars and focusing on a trio of #aapi characters who provided a ton a laughs, Mateo, Sandra, and Cheyenne from @nbcsuperstore! Superstore was something that came out of left field for me. In a time when I just wasn’t really watching network shows, Superstore came out of nowhere with a remarkably relatable energy and sense of humor that was undeniably appealing. Boasting a hugely diverse cast, the show was unlike anything else. It was a farce, but one that was entirely grounded in reality, showing the absurdities of working in retail in a hilarious and human way. But the show also addressed a lot of of serious topics including the Mateo’s (@nicosantos) drama as an undocumented Filipino immigrant (there was even an ICE raid at the store), and the challenges of dealing with the pandemic in retail in the final season. But through it all, in heavy moments and light, these three provided a ton of laughs. Mateo and Cheyenne (@nicholesakura) had an amazing relationship full of snark and whimsy and colorful fashion, and Sandra (@kalikokauahi) was constantly stealing scenes with her unassuming and subtle humor (Sandra very quickly became my favorite character). And they all had their chances to shine on screen, they weren’t simply one-note side characters. Yesterday we were talking Bruce Lee, today for #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth we’re talking Bruce Lee’s legacy, specifically the Cinemax/HBO Max show Warrior. In his time fighting to be seen in Hollywood, Lee pitched a show about a Chinese martial artist traveling the American west. Studios didn’t pick up the show due to their hesitancy to cast a non-white lead, and further muddied the waters when they produced the tv show Kung Fu, starring David Carradine and having the same basic premise to Lee’s pitch. Sadly Bruce Lee never got to see his dream on tv, but thanks to his daughter @therealshannonlee and action director @justinlin, Lee’s original treatment was fleshed out into the amazing series Warrior on @hbomax! The show follows Ah Sahm, a Chinese immigrant, as he navigates the intricacies of the criminal underworld and the social and political situations in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the 1870’s. Tensions are on the rise between rival gangs and between the Asian and white populations in this pre-Chinese Exclusion Act setting. Ah Sahm, played brilliantly by @kojiandrew, tries to figure out this new world with both words and fists and finds plenty of drama and plenty of action along the way. The predominantly Asian cast is more than fists and feet of fury. They are a well rounded and talented group that portray a depth of character and vulnerability that bring the show to life. There are no immasculated Asian men or dragon ladies or other one-note stereotypes. It’s a true celebration of nuanced Asian performances that also happens to have some of the best martial arts action ever on tv! So here’s Andrew Koji’s Ah Sahm in his nunchuck wielding glory! Next up for #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth is this delightful duo from Disney’s latest animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon! Set in a world inspired by the myths and cultures of Southeast Asia, Raya sports and almost entirely Asian cast led by the amazing @kellymarietran as Raya and @awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon herself! The movie breaks the mold in so many ways. In terms of Asian representation, it is set in a world that is fantastically Asian. Yes Mulan took place entirely in China and Moana entirely on Polynesian islands (minus the realm of monsters), but Raya is a fantasy land that is entirely southeast Asian (from aesthetic to music to cuisine). It breaks the Disney Princess mold. Most of the princesses, even the BIPOC ones, deal with the idea that they are princesses BUT ALSO other. “I’m a princess, but I’m also a warrior, or explorer, or entrepreneur, etc.” This is the first that really inextricably intertwines the identity of the princess and the other. From the beginning Raya’s identity as a princess INCLUDES her martial arts training, and being a warrior and protector is part of her responsibilities as a princess. And one of the things I really love is that it doesn’t fall on the trope of the westernization of the Asian sense of “honor,” or the princess trope of the “power of love.” It’s a story about hope and pluralism that is both relevant and timeless. There’s great action, awesome character and creature design, and a solid amount of humor. We’re racing to the finish line of #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth and up next is a fan favorite breakout character from a surprise box office franchise, Han from the Fast and Furious saga! Han (full name Han Seoul-Oh in an amazing Star Wars homage) first showed up as the mentor character in Tokyo Drift, the third in the series and the first to be directed by @justinlin (who went on direct many sequels including arguably the best of the series, Fast Five). Han, played by the amazing @sungkangsta, tragically dies on-screen in the Tokyo Drift, but we loved him so much that he came back for several more installments which were set before the events of TD. After Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw (who was responsible for Han’s death) became a regular in the series, even getting his own spin-off movie, Hobbes & Shaw with The Rock, the fan campaign #justiceforHan took off. Next up for #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth is Sunny and his son Henry from Into The Badlands—one of the best martial arts tv shows ever produced. The fight scenes were absolutely brutal, had fun wire work, and were raw, natural, and exciting. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic world that has reverted to a feudal system of government where technology is scarce and swords and daggers have replaced guns. The show follows Sunny (@thatdanielwu), a warrior with a mysterious past, as he fights for his family’s freedom while uncovering a mystery that may be responsible for the fall of the old world.
