I'm a huge fan of art and these are only skimming the top of the wonders of the artist community and those that inspire me.

@iliothermia a trans Jewish artist who creates undeniably trans and Jewish art!!! Hyde's linework and composition is masterful, and his attention to detail is immaculate. He has a shop where he sells beautiful high quality prints, stickers, pins, bookmarks, and a few other odds and ends! Oh, did I mention he draws everything with a MOUSE!

@eleheba another trans Jewish artist I adore. Skilled in black and white work and color. Composition is crazy. It's the kind of work I'd think to find in old medieval books. They're definitely a modern day master artist. They also have a shop!

@stayatsam this artist has inspired me endlessly and got me into portraiture. Another transgender W. Sammi creates beautiful portraits with a unique coloring style. Edgy, gothic, and beautiful.

@littlestpersimmon I'm struggling to find the words to describe how incredible this artist's work is. Dreamy, ethereal, romantic, and detailed. He create enchanting mlm pieces inspired by southeast Asian art and culture.

@godivaghoul an erotica artist who creates dashing gothic scenes. Beautiful women with spectacular line art...need I say more?

@wiltkingart dark and moody paintings with incredible use of color. A focus on trans mlm. Another artist that deeply inspires me.

@skulkingfoxes on instragram and Twitter (edit: and now tumblr!) Rowan has incredible lineart and character design. They have several comics as well as a shop! Their composition and use of black and white is skillful and immaculate. I wish I could steal their hands

Notes on the fashion:

I pulled from a lot of references of North African/West Asian traditional clothing for inspiration

For this outfit specifically though, I used a lot of references from the 1903 winter Russian costume ball and the headpieces a lot of the photographs from that event

I like the idea of them using so many pearls considering the eldar's general connection to the sea

For the robes, I again used refs from the 1903 ball and Chinese cloud collars

I'd say I probably pulled some of my own familiarity with native styles of beadwork unconsciously as well, but I wasn't referencing that specifically

know you better m. 14.3k. 6/6. atsumu and sakusa are ordered to get to know each other better after their disagreements interfere with their performance on the court. loved the gradual progression of enemies to friends to lovers and the balance of family and mental health issues shared between them.

YOUR BEST AMERICAN BOY t. 23.3k. an asian-american au featuring sakuatsu. as an asian-canadian, i was able to relate to this at a spiritual level. this was inspired by afflications for below-average asian-americans that's in atsumu's pov, which i also read a while back. it's a really niche but nuanced au, and i'm so happy that they exist.

the convergence of the aces g. bokuto and iwa friendship with side bokuaka and iwaoi. 4.1k. bokuto notices that iwa looks a lil lonely and befriends him. i love their friendship and how they were able to be with each other through their major milestones. a beautiful portrayal of male friendship <3

Blood In My Veins m. 77.9k. 21/21. kuroken. obligatory heart-wrenching kuroken fic of the month, this time with kuroo escaping his abusive ex to live in the city and befriend kenma, who has severe social anxiety. painful yet soft with a happy ending.

there is no official art of the biologist from the southern reach trilogy, so i quick whipped up my own for the character inspiration meme i did! above is her physical description from the second book.

to me, she is one of the best written characters in any media i've consumed. one of my all-time favorites, undoubtedly. the southern reach trilogy is one of the best things i've ever read too, i encourage it for anyone that hasn't. it's probably my biggest inspiration, as well!

Niobe Chase (TPA) | She puts James Bond to shame. I gave her a different stealth outfit because I'm tired of PB drowning female MCs in crop tops. There are other shirt types, thank you very much. Also scars and ✨muscles✨ because MCs deserve to be shredded too.

Gwyneira (GUIN) | If PB gives me a historical book, I will look up historical outfits and throw out every outfit PB gave me. It is a fact of life. Gwyneira's gown is a combination of Eleanor of Aquitaine's tomb effigy and some inspiration from 12th c. English queens. I went with 12th century fashion because that's when Guinevere is first mentioned in literature.

Fumie Ueno (KOD) | I cannot tell you the annoyance I felt after having lightly researched the Yakuza because I wanted to use the new Asian face in the book, given my MC a well though out Japanese name, only for me to open the book and see that her father's name is Beckham and her brother's name is Clyde. Her default name is Diamond. Make it make sense. I changed the gold to silver in her outfit because if goes better with her skin tone. I also gave her F!Trystan's snake earrings.

Maxine "Max" Thompson (GG) | Listen, I did the math. I'm declaring that Max's parents named her after Maxine Shaw (Attorney at Law) from Living Single. Max takes Type A personality to a whole new level and I love her for it.

Amika Fuller (RWB) | I was contractually obligated to put a red solo cup somewhere in Amika's portrait. I clearly decided to I wanted to practice rendering patterns for this set of MCs because I just noticed that 5/6 have a pattern somewhere on their clothes.

Cheyney Latimore (FCL) | Miss Steal-Your-Girl herself. Listen, she's messy, but she's my mess. The pins on her hiking bag are as follows: the flag for the state of Georgia (because I headcanon that the characters when to Clark Atlanta University instead of just Clark University), a pressed penny, the symbol of Uranus (it's a Sailor Moon reference), the lesbian pride flag, and the pin for Arches National Park.

My entry into the NES resprite challenge, a redone sprite of Princess Peach. This Version is the same size as the original, but has only 1 additional colour - the blue for her jewels and eyes. I have a version where those are black instead on my disk drive which I cannot access right now. /frustration

Twilight Town: The Bad Luck Banshee

The bad luck magnet herself is Misery, no really, it’s her name. She’s probably the most popular character in the show aside from Ruby (and probably Frank and Len). She definetly represented the goth girl of the show rather than Ruby who was different between the show and her original character.

Misery was drawn a lot before I got to working more of Twilight Town. Hell, she had a portrait and profile done before everyone else. So I am excited to talk about her and my plans for her in the AU (and the sound of me laughing getting cut off)

The Fairy Woman

In my long long looooooooooooong research of monsters, Banshees might have been my favorite. Banshees are said to be “fairy women” in Irish and are female spirits whose screams were meant to signal that death was close. It’s never confirmed in the show but the fanon pretty much consider Misery to be a banshee (same goes for the rest of her family). I decided to add those original folklore elements to her in Twilight Town like her pale eyes that looks like they’re staring off to the distance or someone’s soul. I definitely want to go into more of her abilities or even other powers such as her ability to sense misfortune before it happens and even her insane pain resistance.

As for her family, I might expand on it more as her family being female folklore figures would be a lot of fun to look at. Looking back on it now, I’m really disappointed that most of misery’s family members are reused models of her or of other ancestors (And I don’t like thinking about Mildew’s portrayal as an extremely racist mashup of East Asian culture) As a kid I used to fixate on Yo Kai (Kuchisake Onna, Futakuchi Onna, and Yuki Onna being my favorites), La Llorna, Bloody Mary, Sirens, and Baba Yaga (I guess I was super into monster stuff even before Ruby Gloom). Though I want to do my proper research before I portray folklore figures from cultures I’m not apart of.

Design

To be honest, I never figured out why I made Misery Black Irish. Maybe it’s because when I first drew her, I gave her black features unintentionally so I kept that in. Or that in the show there were pretty much no BIPOC characters (and the shows portrayal of Romani and Chinese was…bad). When I posted her new look, people actually liked this version of her so yeah, I kept it!

As for shipping her with Iris. I wanted to do something besides shipping them with the twins (I was guilty of this as a kid). I found their dynamic cute and it was something different. Misery’s bad luck would have made it impossible to be with people but when there’s Iris, who wouldn’t even give a thought before putting themselves in danger, it’s sorta sweet.

I imagine Misery to be the one who warns the group before something that can end in disaster even if it ends up being a small inconvenience. I was heavily inspired by trad goth for her hence why her clothes are a bit more modern than her dress as a kid.

Origin and Background

Misery is a magic monster under the umbrella term Faerie, a type of monster most humans treat like cute mischief makers, except for a certain type of Fae, a Banshee. Misery’s whole family are shrouded in bad luck, being known as harbingers of disasters. Although in the past banshees could be seen as warnings or giving their grief to families in need, time passed to where banshees were feared and rumored to kill with their screams. They couldn’t hide away due to the forces of bad luck they bring.

Misery moved to Twilight Town when she was 8 as her family got ran out of another place by an angry mob. Misery soon moved to Ruby’s mansion when her family decided to move again and allowed her to choose if she wanted to leave or not. Despite her bad luck being, well, that, Ruby seemed to not mind. Almost like her cheerfulness and optimism made the bad luck seem almost sufferable.

Look at how silly she is.

My name is Res or Reston (they/them). I'm a queer, nonbinary 30+ year old writer, artist, and crafter. While professionally, I write educational and reference materials, I also write short stories, and I am attempting my first novel in 2024!

I also do art, mostly OC portraits. I am currently in multiple drawing courses, hoping to improve my work, especially as it pertains to character design.

My degrees are in graphic design, art history, English literature, and education. I was a teacher for many years, until I was injured by a student. I went to Lipscomb and Vanderbilt Universities. I'm an avid reader and believer in continuing education and my goal this year is to take multiple free and cheap continuing education course.

I am autistic, ADHD, and have had a traumatic brain injury. I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, with nerve damage and osteoarthritis in my hands.

I'm currently working on a science fiction novel inspired heavily by my love of Star Trek and Star Gate, with fantasy elements more inspired by contemporary low fantasy such as ASOIAF. It has a South Asian sapphic lead, a lesbian deuterogonist, a gray asexual deuterogonist, and an overwhelmingly queer and otherwise diverse cast of alien and human characters.

I am also working on a Lovecraftian horror story involving the FBI and an investigative journalist diving into a series of disappearances in a small town secretly controlled by a cult to dark god from the Mythos. Also very diverse, very queer, very adult in content, including murder, gore, religious abuse and trauma, etc. Thinking about making this an audio drama, but unsure.

I was going to make a more broad post about how techwear clothing, especially that which was designed or inspired by Errolson Hugh (right), takes heavy inspiration from a variety of traditional asian garments but then I found this pic and I think it would be more astounding it there wasn't a direct correlation with this specific drawing. what I've never been able to reconcile about techwear stuff tho, besides that outfit costing upwards of $4000, is the omnipresent use of synthetic fabrics, though that is the entire point and purpose of the trend. I wish there was some more accessible amalgamation of the two with natural fabrics
