I literally drafted this post a week ago and with the news of the potential Sophie casting call I feel like it was a sign to share my thoughts 😊

This is all for fun and as Sophie’s arrival seems to be getting closer and more inevitable, so here are some of my Sophie fancasts! As a SEA woman I would love to see representation in the Bton universe and have always pictured Sophie as Asian. [EDIT] With the assumed confirmation that Sophie will be East Asian I’ve included actresses that I love and have been fancast of mine for some time; these actresses are all East Asian (chosen before the casting call) but I also want to call to attention the lack of non-East Asian representation we see at this time. Fancast are at the end!

This is a good time to bring up what Asian representation even looks like since the continent is so big! I will be referencing this Variety article.

So we’ve seen that Asian representation has had a “significant increase of Asian characters from 3% to 16% over the course of 2007 to 2022” and while that seems like a step in the right direction it’s clear that the entirety of Asia is still not represented in media.

The release of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians saw the increase of Asian stories and characters; but only “90% of the most visible of Asian characters on streaming platforms were a light or medium complexion”. Right now Asian representation is mainly centered around East Asians, and while any representation is good it’s important to be knowledgeable that not all Asian people are descended from that area.

There is a large disparity on how we view the term “Asian”. There are so many ethnicities that are beautiful and deserve representation. A larger representation needs to be seen within the Asian diaspora and also mindfulness to avoid common tropes and stereotypes is extremely important.

Any ways, here are some of my favorite fancasts I have right now! Conveniently all of these actresses are mixed race and with the obvious fact that Lady Cowper’s name is Araminta, it’s assumed Sophie is somehow related to them (which is a choice I do not agree with if now that Sophie is casted as a POC).

Known for: Bottoms

Ethnicity: Born in the USA, Chinese/White

Netflix connection: The Chair

The whole time I was watching BOTTOMS I was just so mesmerized by her beauty! She has this ethereal gracefulness that really makes me think of Sophie!

Adeline Rudolph (29)

Known for: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Resident Evil

Ethnicity: Born in Hong Kong, Korean/German

Netflix connection: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Resident Evil

Adeline always caught my attention in CAOS and I wanted to see more of her! She also has quite a bit of projects lined up rn but I’ve lived using her in some edits!

on my hands and knees begging keepblr to put more thought into tam's clothing than just. things you would see a kpop idol wear. like every moodboard i see of him has the shirts with the first button undone and the multiple silver rings on each hand and i just. c'mon.

i would get it if i saw it applied more to other characters who canonically wear a lot of rings (sophie/fitz with the cognate rings + panic switches), probably accessorize a lot based on their character (biana), or might like something to fidget with (dex). but to see it with just tam, who is one of the few characters who hasn't been mentioned to wear rings in canon, makes it feel like those ideas came from...somewhere else.

I feel so awful for Sophie... To be a dark skin south asian girl with white parents and your father would rather make big moves at the racist fascist factory and let thrive an environment where you feel unsafe than just be in your life and be a parent. All this in the name of the paper bills that are going to absorb your tears.

i want sophie to dress up as a man to go to the bridgerton family's masquerade ball, and for benedict to fall in love with her like that, something like shang and mulan. there's the passage of time, he can't stop thinking about the silver lord, then he meets a girl. and he falls madly in love with her. it would make sense for her, as an employee, to have access to her bosses' clothes and even more sense for benedict not to recognize sophie as a woman.

hot topic: i so wanted the actress to be an asian girl... like, greta lee... jessie mei li... it would be even more interesting if it was an actress of asian and latin descent for the name to match (ana hikari...

I need everyone to see my vision of Benedict Bridgerton with an East Asian Sophie, specifically Chinese, a direct nod to the historical origins of the tale of Cinderella, in where the EARLIEST historical/ancient written tale of Cinderella was found in the mid-ninth century

Plus, its another aspect of Asian representation that we haven’t seen this far with a main character yet

I want them to have Chinese or Japanese names, the latter running off the fact that both Kaito is a Japanese name so the Imperial family--although situated in China--has some Japanese heritage. I don't have any names set in stone, but I like Kaminari, Yutaro and Emiko.

If the first two kids are going to have Peony and Rikan as a part of their names (whether first or middle names), I'd love Emiko for their third because then Iko also gets the special family name treatment.

Anyway these are just placeholder names for me, I'm open to others! As long as it's not Marie Rose Elizabeth, as I've seen some fics name kaider kids. To those names, I say:🤨

ok so sophie has gotta be older than iverson right? and if one of them was adopted, it had to have been after kendall married rava bc why else would they have an adopted kid. like it's not impossible that rava had one biological child and then adopted another on her own and then met kendall but it's unlikely, and it would be weird if that were the case given ken's canonical infertility. like if that was just unrelated to the fact of his kids not being biologically his. doing the math here that makes sophie "half-rava, half filing cabinet guy" and iverson the buy-in

Katie Leung - Cho Chang from Harry Potter. It would be such a fun comeback role for her!
