Reading the first Nevernight book, in a single chapter I went from cheering that my lesbian/bi otp kissed for the second time (and insulting the protagonist badly for still thinking about the guy she basically dumped) to being in a constant state of "what the fuck is going on".

I got my otp, but at what cost.

A little something different!

I used to be a TOTAL bookworm as a kid, then sort of lost it for a decade or so, then in about 2016/17 I decided to start reading more (& also moved closer to a library & got in the habit of using it).

Fast forward 7ish years and I'm back in the habit of reading & am devouring stacks of books per year, with 2023 being my most ridiculous one yet. I somehow ended up reading 120 books? Mostly because I'm terrible at managing my library holds list & kept getting stacks of books I really wanted to read (I'm also lucky to be a really fast reader, which helps).

DARKDAWN SPOILERS AHEAD

You know what is freaking sad?

That, in order to stay with Ashlinn, Mia will never reconnect to the people she loves.

Tric is down there near the Fire, alone. Well, Carlotta, Naev, and all the Gladiatii already dead are there to keep him company.

And this is the point. In the end, even Sid, Bladesinger, Jonnen, (maybe not Mercurio if he becomes an immortal librarian), Cloud... they all will be around the Fire. Together. Happy, I like to imagine.

Darius and Alinne are there, too.

But not Mia. To stay with "her lover", she'll never know the warmness of the Fire and all the people that she has Loved around it, in the end.

Milestones

Gabe walked into the office briefcase in hand as he approached his office he bumped into his fiancé Jazmine almost spilling her coffee cup on them. He steadies her chuckling “Whoa where’s the fire?”

“Oh sorry Gabe”

“It’s alright” He kisses her cheek “Where are you off to in such a hurry?”

“Just got a doctor’s appointment didn’t want to be late”

He raises an eyebrow “Wait didn’t you just have one?”

“It’s just a follow up”

He looks at her with concern “Are you ok? You’re not sick are you and” He grabs her coffee cup inhaling the scent “Is this some kind of herbal tea? You said you hated those”

“I’m fine Gabe they’re just running some tests that’s all and the doctor recommended me this”

“I’m coming with you”

“There’s no need for you”

“Please let me go with you Jaz I’m gonna be worrying all day and I won’t focus”

She smiles cupping his cheek “Ok how about I promise to call you as soon as it’s over?”

“Now you want me to watch my phone all day?”

She giggles “I promise you Gabe nothing is wrong I’m totally fine just trust me” She kisses him softly

He sighs then smiles “Ok just let me know if the doctor says anything is wrong”

“I will love you”

“I love you too” He kisses her forehead then watches as she heads off to the elevator

Gabe heads to his office and tries to settle down to work but his mind constantly drifts down to Jazmine he checks his phone and sees no text messages or phone calls from her he lets out a sigh as he puts his phone down

“Knock knock” He looks up and sees Gigi and Beau

Beau grins “Hey there what’s got you so down?”

“Just worried about Jaz she’s at the doctor’s now I just hope nothing goes wrong”

Gigi shrugs “I’m sure it’s nothing”

“I don’t know with the way she’s been throwing up”

Gabe’s eyes shoot up as Beau covers his mouth and Gigi shoots him a glare “What?”

Beau tries to backpedal “Uh I didn’t mean throwing up I meant she’s been totally not sick these days very healthy”

Gabe’s eyes narrow “You better tell me right now”

Gigi sighs as she facepalms “I knew you’ll spill it eventually” She sighs “Look she didn’t want you to worry but she’s been not well these days”

Beau nods “Yeah we wanted to go get drinks the other day to celebrate a big win and she refused!”

“Not to mention the vomiting I mean the mere sight of food makes her sick”

Gabe immediately stands gathering his things “I need to go”

Gigi holds out her hands to stop him “Wait a minute you don’t even know where��

“I’ll find out I just need to be with her”

Gigi looks at him eyes softening “Look just wait for her to get back and she’ll tell you everything”

Gabe sighs as he slumps back “Fine I’ll wait” As they leave Gabe rests his head in his hands I’m worried about her

After 2 hours Gabe heads to the break room and pours himself another cup of coffee Ashlinn comes in and looks at him “Um how many of those have you had?”

“A couple”

“Why are you drinking so much?”

“It’s keeping me from going down to the bar”

“What’s wrong?”

He sighs “Just waiting for Jazmine to come back from the doctors did you know she was sick?”

“Well I did see her heading to the bathroom a lot I asked her about it she said it was nothing”

Gabe grunts “So everyone knew except me”

“She’ll be ok Gabe”

Gabe hears the elevator ding and he rushes out the door and sees Jazmine arriving with a basket in her hand she sets the basket down then smiles “Hi Gabe I need to” He cuts her off as he sweeps her into his arms

“God I’m glad to see you I was so worried”

Jazmine looks over his shoulder and sees Gigi Beau and Ashlinn “You told him?”

“Hey I kept my mouth shut it was this one” Gigi nudges Beau

Beau scratches his head nervously “Sorry about that”

Jazmine sighs as she pulls away “Sorry Gabe I just didn’t want you to worry and honestly I thought it was nothing and I wanted the doctor to confirm that”

“Sweetheart you know you can tell me anything what do our marriage vows say?”

Jazmine giggles “We haven’t said those yet”

Gabe chuckles “I know I mean what do the traditional ones say for better or for worse in sickness and in health I’ll always be here for you no matter what”

Jazmine blushes “You’re right I’m sorry Gabe”

“So what did the doctor say?”

Jazmine smirks “Why don’t you look in the basket?”

Gabe walks over to the basket and sees baby blanket and glass baby bottles fill with candy and a onesie that reads See you soon daddy!

Gabe’s eyes go wide “You’re pregnant?”

“Yes I took 4 tests that all said positive just wanted to get confirmed by a doctor” Gabe spins her around she laughs “Gabe put me down!”

He sets her down gently then kisses her deeply “We’re gonna have a baby”

Beau claps Gabe on the shoulder “Congrats I can wait to introduce them to fun”

Gigi grins “Let me know if you need a babysitter and I have a cousin who sells baby clothes”

Ashlinn giggles “I can’t wait to give them lots of toys”

Gabe kisses her cheek “Thank you all”

Jazmine grins “Gabe we’re gonna have to speed up the wedding”

“Why?”

“Well I at least want to fit into my dress”

Gabe chuckles “Of course” He kisses her softly “I love you”

“I love you too”

It's cause the murderer is a woman, so that distracted from the actual triangle that was happening and prevented a (much needed) Gale situation.

We're still hating on Gale after 10 years but I've seen no one have a problem with what Ashlinn did.

"Oh they were all murderers". No. There was a thick line drawn at killing FRIENDS.

Jessamine got WRECKED cause she was suspected of killing Carlotta. But WHO killed Carlotta? How mad was Mia at Jessamine for *Carlotta* (not even her lover)???

Before being Mia's lover, Tric was Mia and supposedly Ash's FRIEND.

Mia is NOT like Ash.

Else she would have gotten the Gladiatiis killed. During the Venatus, she risked EVERYTHING she had worked on in her life to NOT KILL HER FRIENDS.

THEY'RE NOT THE SAME.

Nevernight gave us both “enemies to lovers” and “lovers to enemies” and that really was a power move.

Sure, it also gave us “friends to lovers to I’d-die-for-you-but-it’s-not-mutual-also-you’re-in-love-with-my-murderer??????” but we’re not going to talk about that aren’t we?
