Goodreads Choice Awards but the nominees are just the books I've personally shelved
I have a lot of thoughts about the options as they exist (mostly not that bad, except when it comes to the total elimination of children's literature, about which I am furious), but per usual I can't really articulate them in a coherent way SO I sorted my shelves by publication date, ignored the GCA requirement of a minimum 3.5 average rating, and am doing this instead.
[update: oops this did not turn out coherent either. but it got typed!]
Important Reminder: These are not all books I consider equal contenders for "best." I simply wanted to highlight every possible option I actually knew about and have read or am interested in reading.
YA
After the Sirens - Sharon Farrell
Begin Again - Emma Lord (forgot to add this one before)
The Brothers Hawthorne - Jennifer Lynn Barnes (actual nominee and I'm gonna vote for it even though it seems like it may be more of a filler book. The Davenports is the only other official nom to intrigue me, and its lower average rating + hideous cartoon cover isn't enough to flip me unread so sorry, we're going Basic Popularity Contest Pick)
Cleaning Up - Leanne Lieberman
Five Survive - Holly Jackson (definitely not a winner)
Gather - Kenneth M. Cadow (edit: National Book Award finalist?? like with the adult fiction??)
Good as Gold -- Candace Buford (definite contender for fave so far)
Holly Horror - Michelle Jabès Corpora
The Island - Natasha Preston (lol. lmao even. but ridiculous fun)
The Lake House - Sarah Beth Durst
A Long Stretch of Bad Days - Mindy McGinnis
The Renaissance of Gwen Hathaway - Ashley Schumacher (here on author loyalty only)
Three Rivers - Sarah Stusek (THAT'S RIGHT. HER.)
Summer Rental - Rektok Ross (why am I this aware of brand-new ya horror??) (because I love horror and it's usually better paced and spookier and less shock-gory than the adult brand? fair)
YA FANTASY / SCI FI
Dream to Me - Megan Paasch (I think it would go here, anyway. but maybe it's just regular YA)
The Eternal Ones - Namina Forna (I gotta remember this series exists)
FANTASY
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries -- winner winner pick!! (no like officially)
Starling House - Alix E. Harrow (though this is a close second, and honestly, if they weren't both actual nominees I'd think The Unmaking of June Farrow has some potential intrigue)
ROMANCE
Hazel Fine Sings Along - Katie Wicks (no comment on its Wattpad origin. I didn't notice until just now. have not read it.)
Famous For A Living - Melissa Ferguson (popular enough for Once Upon a Book Club! but not for for an official nom, despite my hopes, in this fiercely competitive category. boooo)
Out On a Limb - Hannah Bonam-Young (damn I actually saw this one making rounds on BookTube, thought it might be here)
Something Wild & Wonderful - Anita Kelly (can't believe there's actually a queer romance I want to see show up and it doesn't)
(Bonus: legit nominees I am considering for validity include Happy Place; Yours Truly - I really need to figure out if Emily Henry and Abby Jimenez are in my wheelhouse or not - and Hello Stranger, though as much as I like Katherine Center this one does not call to me)
FICTION
This Bird Has Flown - Susanna Hoffs (might also have been under romance if picked for the actual GCA? feels more mainstream than that but idk. anyway HATERS 2 THE LEFT.)
^ also my pick for debut
The Lost Manuscript - Mollie Rushmeyer (dunno which category this would officially go in either. probably romance? maybe mystery? but it's got a lot more plot than the average romance)
HISTORICAL FICTION
The Echo of Old Books - Barbara Davis (holy crap this one's actually in the nominations?! Instant vote. Almost disappointing because there are some other candidates I would have felt fine voting for to block the worse ones, but this is the only one on my acute TBR. If I don't give at least 4 stars I will be shocked)
MYSTERY/THRILLER
Forgotten Trail - Claire Kells
The Hike - Lucy Clarke
The Only One Left - Riley Sager
Homecoming - Kate Morton (crisis alert! the latter two are both official nominees and I am equally interested in both/both have equally good track records with me) (probs. gonna vote Kate on the principle of female solidarity. even though this is really stretching the definition of "mystery")
HORROR
A Haunting on the Hill - Elizabeth Hand
(How To Sell a Haunted House is a hard maybe but also the only one I think I'd even consider trying from the official noms)
MEMOIR
Paris: The Memoir - Paris Hilton
The Woman in Me - Britney Spears
Grimoire Girl - Hilarie Burton Morgan
Tell Me Everything - Minka Kelly
If You Would Have Told Me - John Stamos
Goodbye to Clocks Ticking - Joseph Monninger (forgot I just stumbled upon this one recently! it's on my library list but not my GR account)
and one more except GCA put it in a different category hang on
Three of these - not Burton's, alas - are actually nominees. Britney is gonna win but not without a fight from me. Do I go with Paris, whose memoir impressed me even though I still don't care much for her as a person, or Minka, whose memoir I haven't read but whose reviews sound excellent and whom I like more?
HUMOR
Being Henry - Henry Winkler (there is absolutely no reason for this not to be nominated in memoir btw. I hope it wins Humor because nothing else appeals in that category and I have multiple vendettas (SAMANTHA IRBY), but it would be as misplaced a win as the Office Ladies book was last year. fully deserving of an award! actually the best of the given nominees! but also like an adult beating a bunch of children in a footrace.)
MIDDLE GRADE
(no longer a GCA category but it fudgin' should be)
Just Gus - McCall Hoyle
Falling Out of Time - Margaret Peterson Haddix (actually glad I don't have to choose between these two because like. dogs - but also boy MC - or author loyalty ft. sequel to my childhood fave??)
Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen - Geri Halliwell The Spice Girl (no. 😔) (and yet it is still on my shelf)
I have no strong opinions for any categories I skipped.

FAYE PRIDE Book Review: With Love, Mommie Dearest - The Making Of An Unintentional Camp Classic ★★★★
Tumblr media
In July, to paraphrase a famous number from the musical theatre songbook, “The name on everybody’s lips is gonna be Faye!” Her highly anticipated documentary, Faye, debuts on Max July 13, but any fans can get through that agonizing waiting period by picking up a copy of With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making Of An Unintentional Camp Classic by A. Ashley Hoff. The author of Match Game 101: A Backstage History Of Match Game has followed up that granular look at the classic game show with an extensively researched, page turning history of the much-maligned, career-ruining adaptation of Christina Crawford’s memoir, Mommie Dearest, the 1981 film detailing the abuse film legend Joan Crawford inflicted on her children.
Hoff combines previously reported tellings with interviews he conducted with key people associated with the film. He covers everything from the sale of the book to Paramount Pictures all the way through to the aftermath of the film’s release. Interviews with co-stars and film historians provide a comprehensive oral history for anyone interested in the details surrounding a serious subject turned into an over-the-top yet intensely watchable camp fest. Sure, it would have been nice if the director, the late Frank Perry, had asked the legendary, Oscar winning Faye Dunaway to dial it back in some scenes, but then we’d likely not be talking about the movie 43 years later. Besides, take away some of those cringey scenes and it’s easy to appreciate her magnificent, highly committed performance. So many films and television shows now have “Tone Meetings” in pre-production just to make sure they don’t repeat the mistakes Perry made.
I saw the film in its opening weekend, and sure enough, the audience at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood erupted in gales of laughter. In response, the studio changed its advertising campaign from a serious photograph of Faye as Joan to that of its infamous quote, “No wire hangers…EVER!” and the tagline, “The biggest mother of them all”. The eventually reverted back to their original ad when the producers expressed their horror with it, but the damage had been done. Since then, Mommie Dearest has joined the pantheon of other camp classics such as Valley Of The Dolls and Showgirls, among others.
Although Dunaway didn’t contribute to Hoff’s book, he provides a balanced portrayal of her through such actors as Rutanya Alda, who played Crawford’s long-suffering housekeeper Carol Ann, to Mara Hobel as young Christina. While Alda didn’t have the nicest things to say about Faye, Hobel’s experiences tell of a generous scene partner who looked after her beautifully, especially during some of the intensely physical scenes. Hoff, however, doesn’t shy from depicting Dunaway as an obsessive perfectionist who didn’t win over many others on the production.
I personally worked on a film Dunaway co-starred in quite some time ago, and from my point of view she was gracious and professional, but others thought the complete opposite. There’s a lesson in Hoff’s acute telling that reminds us that a person can be viewed in a myriad of ways, all of the observations having some validity. I found myself truly moved by Hobel’s accounting and those who understood what it took for an actor to take care of themself when making a film likely to run off the rails.
Hoff keeps things moving throughout at a brisk clip, many chapters only being a few pages long. I honestly couldn’t put it down. Your mileage may vary depending on your relationship to the film, but I sopped up the juice like a Bounty towel. The LGBTQ+ community have long ago adopted Mommie Dearest as a cultural touchstone, turning its excesses into classic drag performance art and noisily treating revival screenings as if the film was The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yes, it’s a fun way to release tension and collectively have a ball, but what Hoff, with the astute words of Christina Crawford does is remind us that this was still the story of child abuse. We can all shout along to “No wire hangers!” scene, the Pepsi Cola boardroom moment, or the delicious “Tina! Bring me the axe!” bit, but we should all recognize the lessons learned from the moments of cruelty as well. It allows for Christina Crawford to reclaim the credibility of her writing while also providing insight into a challenging, flawed adaptation.
Faye Dunaway, like the person she portrayed, has demons for sure, but she also has passion and talent to spare. Yes, some portions of the book may be common knowledge already, while certain stories feel repetitive, but I love that this fun, gossipy, sweeping record of a key moment in film history, especially for its LGBTQ+ fans, also has a true beating heart.
With Love, Mommie Dearest is available now wherever books are sold.

The meanest mother of them all! This week, Peaches and Michael are fetching the axe in celebration of 1981’s MOMMIE DEAREST! In addition to discussing this audacious portrait of Hollywood’s juggling of camp and severity, our hosts delve into the double standard women are held to when delivering larger than life performances. Joining the conversation is The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures' Director of Film Programs K.J. Relth-Miller, whose love of filmmaker Frank Perry helps provide insight on this cult classic’s reverential glamour. Then, A. Ashley Hoff, author of With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic, stops by to dig into how his deep love for this controversial motion picture led to him quite literally writing the book on the subject. From wire hangers to ice bowl facials, this episode has it all! Go!

PSA: A Lola Hayden does not exist. It’s a scammer named Ashley Hoff.
I know all of you probably know me for being in a relationship with Lola aka heroinkilledtherockstar aka taintedinsin aka dreamvein. That was true for a while but I found out a lot of things that made me question my relationship with her, and thus it is important for me to let all of you know that there’s someone that’s trying to abuse you by becoming close to you. All the photos this girl “Lola” posted, were nothing but some stolen photos by some other girl whom I don’t know. This person even had videos of this “Lola” and posted them or sent them online. That person in the photos is NOT the same person that posted everything on here under the URLs listed above.
The girl behind those posts and the facade of “Lola Hayden”(known as heroinkilledtherockstar) is Ashley Hoff. Someone we also knew through blogs like rockandrollvalentine and her “secret” personal one normalyouwere. She was supposed to be Lola’s financially poor cousin.
I will break the story down for those who don’t know, so most people can have an idea of what this girl is about.
The Lola Hayden Character (HOW LOLA WAS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE)
Ashley seems to have created this persona or character prior to 2008. Lola was described as being someone with money, someone with a lot of knowledge regarding plenty subjects (music, social media, politics, etc.). You could say she was presented as a know-it-all. She rose to fame on Tumblr by talking about certain bands and sharing “small known facts” (most possibly lies) about certain celebrities. On the internet, she presented a personality that showed she was caring, friendly and overall nice to strangers; a huge part of her whole persona was that she struggled with eating disorders, substance abuse, bullying while at school and most recently homophobia because she came out as a lesbian while “dating” me.
To “close friends” she often seemed as though she was someone you could trust, and certainly, she tried to manipulate you into believing she truly cared about what you had to say, only to later on use this to manipulate you and abuse you emotionally and psychologically. She often shared details of her family, going on to say she had several brothers: Derryck, Jake, Corban and Ayden --her so called twin brother that killed himself when he was 16. She claimed her father was Chris Hayden and that his worked involved doing PR for celebrities and had graduated Yale. Jake was allegedly a surgeon, Derryck was supposed to test video games and Corban just lived off the family’s wealth.
She also claimed to have lived in Tampa, FL, then moved to Toronto, Canada only to live for a bit at The Catskills, NY and move on to NYC itself. The truth? She had lived in Jersey City, New Jersey all this time.
Now that there’s an idea as to who she is, let’s move on to the actual person: Ashley Hoff.
ASHLEY HOFF. (THIS IS HOW SHE LOOKS LIKE) - HER MOTHER BARBARA HOFF IS ALSO A SCAMMER. HERE’S HOW SHE LOOKS
There’s a lot of things we don’t know about her. From what we understand, she is a white-looking black woman (her mother is supposed to be black) and lives in Jersey City, New Jersey. She has been pretending to be this Lola Hayden character for several years now. This person went on to create several fake Facebook accounts to try and make people believe that she had several friends there (especially ones that were related to the wrestling industry; again, this girl is OBSESSED with celebrities). She even went on to create a FaceTime screenshot of her and known wrestler Sami Zayn. She then claimed to have been in a relationship with another famous wrestler Kenny Omega.
I know all of this sounds like it should be easy to figure it out, and even though most of us had suspicions one way or another, the reality is that she is very clever and well spoken when talking about these “stories” that are just actually well-elaborated lies. Several websites regarding catfishing (because that’s what she did, basically) talk about how the abusers use sad or traumatic stories to generate a sense of empathy around this person, and that’s what both Ashley and “Lola” claimed to have. Both suffered either biphobia or homophobia as Lola was presented to be a lesbian, that she had lost her twin brother due to suicide, had committed several suicide attempts, eating disorders, you name it. Ashley claimed she was half black, had lost her father due to alcoholism, was poor, had eating disorders and depression.
Several people and I have gathered information as the scamming included even family members that she stole money from by pretending to be in need of it. To close friends that she had created online, she presented herself as caring and loving while emotionally manipulating us and abusing us psychologically. This is a person that craves control over other people and needs to be able to create lies that are bigger than her because she has low self esteem.
I urge all of you that had ever had any type of encounter with Lola Hayden and/or Ashley hoff TO PLEASE report her on the FBI Internet Crimes section listed here.
You can enter the complaint by talking about the victims (me or someone you know, or even yourself) and mention how this person abused you. The fact that she pretended to be someone else while trying to seem caring to you is crime enough and punishable by the law. We need as much complaints as we can get so this is taken seriously. We have also approached local law enforcement offices to pursue this case and we’ll update as we see continue to gather more information.
INFORMATION
At the risk of posting information and having this blog/post be deleted, I am going to post the information needed for the complaint, or just so you are aware of who she is, I will make two post for the photos and the information. This person has spent almost ten years of her life with her mother (she’s her partner in crime) creating false personalities, only sticking with Lola Hayden as she rose to fame in 2010-2011. If we get this post to be viral or at the very least popular within our circle, she won’t be able to come back or deflect this.
For the photos of Ashley. For photos of Barbara Hoff (Ashley’s mother). For “Lola Hayden”. For their INFORMATION.
Also, please refrain from contacting these people. They are extremely intelligent and will be able to try and manipulate you, and wrap you around their lies. This is not a good thing to do. Let’s just popularize this post so more people are aware of, especially those who knew her through the heroinkilledtherockstar moniker.
I REPEAT: PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO CONTACT THEM. Ashley Hoff particularly has ripped off HER OWN FAMILY MEMBERS for up to $7000. She has multiple secret accounts on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and even Flickr, from where she steals other people’s photos. The main give away that she is trying to catfish someone is the fact that 1) she will refuse to videochat with you and come up with really weird excuses about it. It may seem factual but they aren’t. 2) she may have a group of “friends” that will also remain anonymous or share very little information or have no personal photos. 3) she will try to empathize with you by opening up about certain “traumatic” instances on her life. Please do not believe anything she says.
OTHER TUMBLR ACCOUNTS ASSOCIATED WITH ASHLEY HOFF AKA LOLA HAYDEN AKA HEROINKILLEDTHEROCKSTAR:
@heroinkilledtherockstar (pretended to know a bunch of celebs and even being emotionally/sexually involved with them. Completely false)
@makeamericalesbianagain (pretended to be a lesbian)
@dancinginadaze (yeah, she pretended to be a black man lmao)
@rockandrollvalentine (Ashley’s own personal blog)
@normalyouwere (her “secret” personal blog she pretended to be in a relationship with Kenny Omega and posted “secret” photos of him + his friends)
Ashley Hoff is 22-23 years old. Lola Hayden was supposed to be 27 years old. ASHLEY’S REAL AGE IS 22-23 years old! She constantly lies about her age. Do not trust her.

Send “shit you’re hot” for my muse reacting to hearing yours saying it out loud
Ashley Wheeler was the middle sibling. Younger than Nancy by a few years, older than Mike. Well, there was the baby, but still. She’d had a crush on her sister’s boyfriend as long as she can remember. They were sitting watching tv waiting for her sister to come home- Steve was watching tv, at least. Ashley was watching him, hoping he wouldn’t notice.
“Shit, you’re hot,” she said softly. She didn’t realize she’d said it out loud until Steve turned to her.

Steve chuckled and turned to her, "I'm guessing you didn't mean to-- um--" he looked to the TV, "But yeah, David Hasselhoff, I can see it, solid observation."
He was pretty sure she had meant him, not the Hoff, but he didn't know what to do with it. She was Nancy's sister. But--

Sept 20 (Reuters) - A federal law prohibiting people under felony indictment from buying firearms is unconstitutional, a federal judge in Texas has concluded, citing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that significantly expanded gun rights.
U.S. District Judge David Counts, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, reached that conclusion on Monday in dismissing a federal indictment against Jose Gomez Quiroz, who had been charged under the decades-old ban.
Counts cited the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in June declaring for the first time that the right to "keep and bear arms" under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment protects a person's right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense.
Counts said that while the U.S. Supreme Court decision did not erase societal and public safety concerns about guns, it had "changed the legal landscape."
"The Second Amendment is not a 'second class right,'" Counts wrote. "No longer can courts balance away a constitutional right."
Quiroz's attorney and representatives for U.S. Attorney Ashley Hoff, whose office prosecuted the case, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
Quiroz had been indicted in a Texas state court for burglary and later for bail jumping when he attempted in late 2021 to buy a 22-caliber semiautomatic handgun, leading to his federal indictment.
A federal jury on June 23 found him guilty of one count of illegal receipt of a firearm by a person under indictment and one count of making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm.
That same day, the U.S. Supreme Court's 6-3 conservative majority handed down its ruling, which struck down New York's concealed carry law. Quiroz then moved to have the case dismissed, citing that decision.
Counts granted the request, saying a historical survey found "little evidence" that the federal ban "aligns with this Nation’s historical tradition." (Reporting by Nate Raymond in Boston, Editing by Alexia Garamfalvi and Howard Goller)
