L'Intelligence Artificielle et le Saint-valentin

L'intelligence artificielle commence à perturber des secteurs entiers de la finance à la médecine. Pourtant, l'application la plus révolutionnaire doit encore arriver - et c'est une application existentielle.

Connu comme le problème difficile de la conscience, cela reste l'un des plus grands mystères des neurosciences alors que les scientifiques tentent d'expliquer comment nous avons des expériences subjectives phénoménales - également connues sous le nom de «qualia». Michael Gazzaniga, neuroscientifique de Princeton, a déclaré: «Je ne sais pas si vous êtes conscient. Tu ne sais pas si je suis conscient. Mais nous avons une sorte de certitude à ce sujet. La capacité de ressentir des formes d'amour passionnées et puissantes pourrait faire partie des nombreux avantages évolutifs qui ont permis aux humains de progresser en tant qu'espèce. Il stimule le désir de procréer, de rester en vie et de garder ses proches en vie. Programmer l'IA pour avoir la capacité de ressentir l'amour peut nous permettre de créer une IA plus compatissante et peut être la clé même pour éviter l'apocalypse de l'IA que beaucoup craignent. Nous concevons des machines pour répondre à bon nombre de nos besoins, notamment pour communiquer et résoudre des problèmes. When Herschel Became Harry: How to Find your Ancestors’ Original Names

Although the notion that our immigrant ancestors’ names were changed by clerks at Ellis Island has been debunked time and again by noted scholars in Jewish genealogy (see References below), this myth remains pervasive in the stories that American Jews tell about their family history. The truth, that most of our immigrant ancestors chose to Americanize their names after they settled in the U.S., facing the same pressures to assimilate and avoid discrimination as other immigrant groups, may not be as compelling or as palatable to our modern sensibilities.  

However, grappling with this reality can help us tackle one of the most common and daunting obstacles in Jewish genealogical research: finding our immigrant ancestors’ original names. Without knowledge of their original names, it is difficult to locate relevant passenger arrival manifests and nearly impossible to trace our family history further back in the “old country.” Through this post, I hope to impart a few strategies that I have utilized effectively for breaking through this “brick wall” using primary sources and name change patterns.

Names on Ship Passenger Manifests

Jews living in Eastern Europe typically went by multiple given names, including a shem ha-kodesh, or Hebrew religious name (for men only), a kinnui , or secular Yiddish name, and any number of nicknames in Yiddish and/or the local vernacular language.  Additionally, some went by a double name, essentially a first and middle name; the two parts could be related in sound, meaning, or Biblical symbolism, like Aryeh Leib (meaning “lion” first in Hebrew, then in Yiddish), or be completely unrelated, like Sura Rivka. The given name used on your ancestor’s passenger manifest will be either their secular Yiddish name or a diminutive version of that name. For individuals with double names, the manifest may list only the first name, only the second name, or both in either order. Although your immigrant ancestors’ given names and surnames would have been originally written in the Cyrillic or Hebrew alphabets, on the manifests, they were written down the way that they sounded in the Latin alphabet, according to the phonetic rules of the language of the agent from whom their steamship ticket was purchased (typically, English, German, Dutch, or French). Thus, certain consonants and consonant clusters were frequently used interchangeably (e.g. V and W, or CH and KH) and vowels were particularly interchangeable in various transliteration systems.

Finding Original Names in Primary Sources

While most Eastern European Jewish immigrants did not apply for a legal change of name, there are two key places in which they (or their next-of-kin) may have recorded their pre-Americanized name. The most reliable source of an immigrant’s given name is his/her tombstone, upon which you will often find the deceased’s Hebrew name inscribed, in accordance with Jewish tradition.  For men, you will need to use the Hebrew name on the tombstone to infer their likely Yiddish name, again typically related to one another in sound, meaning, or Biblical symbolism. For women, the Hebrew and Yiddish names are the same. For more information on how to locate a tombstone, see our cemetery research guide.

Another potential source of an immigrant’s pre-Americanized name (in this case, the secular Yiddish given name and European surname) is his/her naturalization petition, the second and final form required in the citizenship application process. It is important to keep in mind that many immigrants never became U.S. citizens and that, prior to 1922, a woman’s citizenship status was derived from either her husband or father and, therefore, she would not have filed a naturalization petition herself. Inferring Original Names from Common Name Change Patterns

If the above sources are unavailable or unhelpful, you may try to infer an ancestor’s Yiddish name based on the English name they adopted in the U.S.; however, it is important to remember that there are no fixed English equivalents for Yiddish names.  Most immigrants changed their given name to one that shared only the same initial letter or sound. Most Biblical names have versions in every European language, including English. If the English equivalent name was trendy at that time, then that name was the one most often adopted by an immigrant. For example, in Warren Blatt’s study of over 6,000 tombstones in several early 20th-century landsmanshaft cemeteries in New York and Boston, 94% of those buried with the English name Abe or Abraham were born with the Hebrew equivalent Avraham.   In contrast, only 4% of those named Moshe took on the unfashionable English equivalent, Moses. For most post-Biblical Jewish names, such as Fruma, there is no English equivalent; likewise, for immigrants who adopted English names with non-Jewish roots, there is no Hebrew or Yiddish equivalent. In the aforementioned tombstone study, those who were buried with the name Bertha (of German origin) were almost equally likely to have been born as Breina (26%), Beila (26%), or Bracha (17%). In a small number of cases, the immigrant chose a new given name that had nothing to do with their Hebrew or Yiddish names (Blatt, “Jewish Given Names”).

With surnames, many immigrants made minor spelling changes to conform to American pronunciation (e.g.  Lewinowicz became Levinowitz) or simply shortened the name to make it easier for Americans to pronounce (e.g. Lewinowicz became Lewin). However, as with given names, there were some who adopted a new surname that had no resemblance to their original surname (e.g. Lewinowicz became Miller).  Jewish given name and surname dictionaries and databases may assist you in creating a list of common Yiddish versions of your ancestors’ English names.  For a comprehensive list of these resources, see our Jewish names research guide.

 Hayatımda kesinlikle bir Makishima öncesi ve sonrası diye bir bölüm var artık. Psycho Pass ve ona dair her şey beni çok etkiledi. Anime bittikten sonra Makishima öldükten sonra bile onun sözlerini not almaya devam ettim. Tabi bunlar onun yaratıcısının sözleri oluyor. Kendisinin adı Gen Urobuchi. Urobuchi anime uyarlamasının senaryo yazarı, mangasının yazarı ise Hikaru Miyoshi. Mangasını okumadığım için Makishima’nın sözleri kime ait tam olarak bilmiyorum. Sadece animesini izlediğim için de Urobuchi hakkında birkaç parça şey okudum. Aynı kişi Fate/Zero animesinin de senaryo yazarıymış ki o animeyi de çok severim. Vahşet entrikalarla dolu bu öyküden, yedi büyücü ailesinin ölümcül turnuvasını anlatan animeden eminim bahsetmişimdir ama onun hakkında yazdım mı bilmiyorum. Neyse bu yedi büyücü ailesinden her biri geçmişte yaşamış savaşçıların ruhlarını onlara ait birer parçayla çağırıp ölümüne dövüştürüyorlar tabi büyücüler de başkasını çağırmasınlar diye onlarla birlikte öldürülüyor. Herkesi öldüren kazanıyor. Animeye dair en sevdiğim şey çağrılan Kral Arthur’un ruhunun aslında kadın olması. Komiklik olsun diye yapılmış bir şey değil, o hikayeye göre aslında Kral Arthur bir kadın. Olay örgüsü, karakterlerin zaman içerisinde gelişmesi vesaire her şey harika. Sevdiğim bir diğer şey ise Makishima’yı seslendiren kişinin Fate/Zero’da deneyimsiz ama büyük bir kalbe sahip olan bir büyücüyü de seslendirmiş olması. Üstelik kendisi Büyük İskender’in ruhunu çağırıp onunla birlikte dövüşüyor (denebilir). Tabi korkak olduğu durumlar da bulunmakta yine de onun son sahnesini Gılgamış’ın karşısına korkarak ama yine de büyük bir cesaretle dövüşün sonucu olarak onu öldürmesi için çıktığı zaman eminim tersini düşüneceksiniz. (Evet aşağıdaki Kral Arthur). 

 Sonuç olarak Psycho Pass’in ikinci sezonunu da çoktan yalayıp yutmuş bulunmaktayım. İkinci sezondaki “kötü adam” ise Kamui. Kendisi Makishima’dan biraz daha farklı bir yöntem izliyor. Amacı Sibyl Sistemi’nin hangi renk olduğunu öğrenmek. Bu sebeple yargı��’ın yargılama yöntemlerini öğrenmeye çalışıyor. Kamui’nin geçmişi de çok tuhaf. Makishima ile ise ortak bir yönleri var, sistem tarafından “görülemiyorlar”. Makishima’nın rengi belli olmasına rağmen Kamui sistem tarafından resmen tanımlanamıyor, adı, sanı, ona dair bilgi hiçbir şekilde yok. Bu sistemde bir açık olması sebebiyle kabul edilemez bir şey. Sonradan anlaşılıyor ki Kamui geçmişte bir uçak kazasından kurtuluyor ve ölen diğer insanların bedenlerinden parçalar taşıyor. Sadece beyni sekiz ayrı insanın beyninin parçalarından tekrar bir araya getirilmiş ve bu da çok gizli bir deneyin bir parçası. Bu deneyin sahibi mi diyeyim yöneticisi mi Sibyl sistemine katılmış biri olduğunu söyleyeyim ve bırakayım, gerisi daha büyük bir şok çünkü. Küçük not Sibyl Sistemi’ne katılanlar rengi hep berrak kalmasıyla ünlü suçlular. Bir sürü insan parçasından oluşması sebebiyle sistem tarafından bir nevi silinmiş olan Kamui mucizevi bir ilaç yaratıyor ve bu ilaç insanların renginin suç işleseler bile berrak kalmasını sağlıyor. Kısaca sistem tarafından görünmez kılınıyorlar. Bu da tamamen suçluların kamufle olması yani kaos anlamına geliyor. Öldürdüğü birkaç kişi sayesinde yargıç’ın kurallarını iyice öğrenen Kamui dedektifleri öldürerek ellerindeki yargıç’ları almaya başlıyor. Yine bir sürü “terapi” görmesi gereken insanların oluştuğunu söylememe gerek yok.  

 Fakat ne yazık ki Kamui kankim Makishima kadar karizmatik değil. Sanki karakterinde işlenmemiş bir ton şey var. İkinci sezonun yazarının farklı olmasının etkileri olsa gerek bu durum. Nedense final de beni yerimden hoplatmadı. Halbuki Makishima’nın ölümü bile görkemliydi. O karaktere bağlanmış olmama rağmen sonuna kadar gitmesi gerektiğini yine de artık ölmesinin de zamanının geldiğini düşünmüştüm. Yani “ölmeseydi yaaa” gibi bir düşüncem olmadı her şey bütünüyle olması gerektiği gibi yerine oturmuştu finalde. Dünyanın altı günde yaratılması gibi Makishima’nın da yirmi ikinci bölümde ölmesi gerekiyordu. Onun bahsettiği kitabı da hemen sipariş ettim. Umarım o sayfalarda Makishima’nın izlerini bulurum. Onu bir daha göremeyecek ve yeni sözlerini duyamayacak olmam beni çok üzüyor fakat onun içindeki trajik anlam arayışını ve insanın iradesinin kudretini bahsettiği kitapların içinde aramaya devam edeceğim. Okuduğum Romeo ve Jüliet de bunun ürünüydü. Kendisi hiç Romeo ve Jüliet’den alıntı yapmadı ama trajedi ve şiirsellik, aynı zamanda anlam arayışı, sorgulama onun anahtar kelimeleri diyebiliriz. Ben de bunları takip etmeye çalıştım o kadar. Yanılmıyorsam Macbeth alıntısı da animenin bölümlerinden birinde var. Onu da aldım tabi. Evet kabul daha önce okumamış olmam büyük bir ayıp. 

 Romeo ve Jüliet’i okuduğumu söylemiştim. Haftanın kitabı oydu. Shakespeare’i yorumlamak fikrinden hoşlanmadım çünkü o kabiliyet ve yetenekte biri değilim. Goodreads’te ona beş üzerinden dört yıldız verdim. Çünkü Shakespeare’de aradığım o şiirsellik çeviri sebebiyle erimiş gibiydi. Shakespeare sadece ve sadece İngilizce haliyle okunmalı ve yorumlanmalı. Çeviri edebiyatı gerçeği çok çürütüyor ve dönüştürüyor. Çeviri yapmak kitabı baştan yazmakla eş değer demişlerse kesinlikle doğru. Tabi ki çeviriyi yapanı suçlamıyorum, başlı başına zor bir iş fakat yeltenmesek daha mı iyi olurdu diye düşünmedim değil. Bugün Soneler’i aldım ve onu alma sebebim yanında İngilizce aslına da yer verilmiş olmasıydı. Shakespeare’in İngilizce olarak bütün çalışmalarını internetten indirmiştim Romeo ve Jüliet’de çektiğim acının etkisiyle. O yüzden Soneler’e dokunmuş olmam bile büyük bir cesaret. Bunu da tesadüfen iki tane Soneler kitabını rafta dururken neden diğerinin çok daha kalın olduğunu sormamla keşfettim. Meğer bahsettiğim gibi diğeri orijinal metne de yer vermiş ve tabi ki aradığım şey tam da buydu! 

 Raflara göz gezdirirken özellikle bilim bölümüne ayrıca bir yer vermeye başladım. Bir diğer kitap ilgimi çekti: İnsanlık 2.0. Yazarı Ray Kurzweil ve elimdeki kitapları bitirir bitirmez bunu yutmayı düşünüyorum. Kendisi hakkında çok fazla iyi yorumlar yapılmış ve geleceği açıkça görebilen nadir insanlardan gibi tanımlar yapılmış. Kitabın içini biraz kurcaladım ve fazlasıyla ilgimi çekti. Kitap hakkında ufak tefek birkaç bilgi için onun buradan Goodreads hesabındaki tanıtımını okuyabilirsiniz. Ufak bir not kitap 2005′te yazılmış yani benim gibi Homo Sapiens’in çok satmasının bir ürünü mü bu gibi düşünmeniz yersiz olur. Geleceğin gelmiş olması beni korkutsa da ayak uydurup öğrenmekten başka çaremiz yok gibi. Sanırım özellikle tekillikle ilgili birkaç şey daha okurum ki ufak bir hazırlık bir ön okuma sayesinde kitabı daha iyi anlayayım. 

 Bu hafta yaptığım güzel şeylerden biri de sinemaya gitmekti. Aynı hafta içinde hem kitap hem de film sığdırmam pek düzenli yaptığım bir şey değil dolayısıyla tadını çıkarıyorum bu başarımın. Gittiğim film Logan’dı. Yıl 2029 ve yaşlı bir Wolverine karşımızda. Asker yaratmak için mutantların genlerinin onların çocuklarının yaratılması için kullanıldığı saçma sapan bir deney. Bilindik özgür irade ile çocukların hemşireler yardımıyla kaçması, vicdan, ruh ve görev çatışması falan söz konusu. Tam bir Wolverine, X-men ve Marvel hayranı olmadığım için yorumlarım tamamıyla eksik ve dışarıdan bakan bir gözün eleştirisi fakat Wolverine ve hikayedeki kızın arasındaki bağ biraz yüzeysel kalmış. Efektler, olay örgüsü ve ufak göndermeler güzel ve yerinde ama sanırım spoiler yememenin getirdiği şaşkınlık eksikleri telafi etmeye yetmiyor. Sözü uzmanlara bırakmak daha iyi olur tabi. Ben kısaca beğendim. 

 Bir hikayenin de sonuna gelmiş olduk.
